The Gram-stain-negative, orange-pigmented, non-spore-forming, non-motile, strictly aerobic, rod-shaped bacterial strain, designated TP-CH-4 T , was isolated from a seamount near the Yap Trench in the tropical western Pacific. The optimal growth conditions were determined to be at pH 7-8, 25-30 °C and in the presence of 2 % (w/v) NaCl. The major respiratory quinone was MK-6. The polar lipid profile contained phosphatidylethanolamine, two unidentified aminolipids, two unidentified phospholipids and three unidentified polar lipids. The predominant cellular fatty acids were iso-C 15 : 0 and summed feature 1 (composed of C 13 : 0 3-OH and/or iso-C 15 : 1 H). Phylogenetic analysis of 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that strain TP-CH-4 T was a member of the family Flavobacteriaceae and formed a distinct lineage. Strain TP-CH-4 T displayed highest sequence similarities to Pseudozobellia thermophila KMM 3531 T (95.1 %) and Flagellimonas flava A11 T (93.9 %). Genome sequencing revealed the strain TP-CH-4 T has a genome size of 4.5 Mbp and a G+C content of 44.5 mol%. Collectively, based on phenotypic, chemotaxonomic, phylogenetic and genomic evidence, strain TP-CH-4 T represents a novel species of a novel genus of the family Flavobacteriaceae , for which the name Pelagihabitans pacificus gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of Pelagihabitans pacificus is TP-CH-4 T (=CGMCC 1.17120 T =KCTC 72434 T ).

The Gram-stain-negative, rod-shaped, facultative anaerobic, motile bacterial strain, designated TP390 T , was isolated from a seamount near the Yap Trench in the tropical western Pacific. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequence showed that strain TP390 T was related to the genus Flavobacterium and had highest 16S rRNA gene sequence identity with the type strain of Flavobacterium jejuense EC11 T (97.8 %). Sequence similarities to all other type strains of current species of the genus Flavobacterium were below 97 %. The predominant cellular fatty acids were iso-C 15 : 0 and iso-C 15 : 1 G. The quinone system for strain TP390 T comprised predominantly menaquinone MK-6 and the polar lipid profile contained phosphatidylethanolamine, four unknown aminolipids, one glycolipid and six unknown polar lipids. The genomic DNA G+C content of strain TP390 T was 31.2 mol%. In addition, the maximum values of in silico DNA-DNA hybridization ( is DDH) and average nucleotide identity (ANI) between strain TP390 T with F. jejuense KCTC 42149 T were 22.60 and 80.01% respectively. Combined data from phenotypic, phylogenetic, is DDH and ANI data demonstrated that the strain TP390 T is representative of a novel species of the genus Flavobacterium , for which we propose the name Flavobacterium profundi sp. nov. (type strain TP390 T =KACC 18559 T =CGMCC 1.15398 T ).

The Gram-strain-negative, rod-shaped, facultatively anaerobic, non-motile bacterial strain, designated S1-10 T , was isolated from marine sediment. Strain S1-10 T grew at 4-42 °C (optimally at 30-35 °C), at pH 7.0-10 (optimally at pH 9) and in the presence of 0.5-8 % (w/v) NaCl. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain S1-10 T was related to the genus Aequorivita and had highest 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity to Aequorivita viscosa 8-1b T (97.7%). The predominant cellular fatty acids were iso-C 15 : 0 and anteiso-C 15 : 0 . The main respiratory quinone was menaquinone 6 (MK-6). The genomic DNA G+C content of strain S1-10 T was 34.6 mol%. The polar lipid profile of strain S1-10 T contained phosphatidylethanolamine, two aminolipids, two glycolipids, one phosphoglycolipid and three unidentified polar lipids. In addition, the maximum values of in silico DNA-DNA hybridization ( is DDH) and average nucleotide identity (ANI) between strain S1-10 T and A. viscosa CGMCC 1.11023 T were 15.4 and 75.7 %, respectively. Combined data from phenotypic, phylogenetic, is DDH and ANI analyses demonstrated that strain S1-10 T is the representative of a novel species of the genus Aequorivita , for which we propose the name Aequorivita sinensis sp. nov. (type strain S1-10 T =CGMCC 1.12579 T =JCM 19789 T ). We also propose that Vitellibacter todarodis and Vitellibacter aquimaris should be transferred into genus Aequorivita and be named Aequorivita todarodis comb. nov. and Aequorivita aquimaris comb. nov., respectively. The type strain of Aequorivita todarodis comb. nov. is MYP2-2 T (= KCTC 62141 T = NBRC 113025 T ) and the type strain of Aequorivita aquimaris comb. nov. is D-24 T (=KCTC 42708 T =DSM 101732 T ).

The Gram-stain-negative, rod-shaped, yellow-pigmented and facultative anaerobic bacterial strain, designated H164 T , was isolated from seawater collected from the Caroline Seamounts in the Pacific Ocean. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain H164 T was related to the genus Algibacter and had highest 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity to Algibacter wandonensis WS-MY22 T (97.4 %). The major cellular fatty acids were iso-C 15 : 0 , anteiso-C 15 : 0 , iso-C 15 : 1 G, iso-C 15 : 0 3-OH and iso-C 17 : 0 3-OH. The predominant menaquinone was MK-6. The polar lipid profile contained phosphatidylethanolamine, one unidentified aminolipid and two unidentified lipids. The genomic DNA G+C content of strain H164 T was 33.2 mol%. The values of in silico DNA-DNA hybridization ( is DDH) and average nucleotide identity (ANI) between strain H164 T and A. wandonensis KCTC 32381 T were 26.10 and 81.88 %. The is DDH and ANI values between strain H164 T and Algibacter lectus DSM 15365 T were 25.40 and 81.79 %. Combined data from phenotypic, phylogenetic, is DDH and ANI analyses demonstrated that strain H164 T represents a novel species of the genus Algibacter , for which we propose the name Algibacter pacificus sp. nov. (type strain H164 T =KCTC 72432 T =CGMCC 1.17117 T ).

A Gram-stain-negative, rod-shaped, motile, catalase and cytochrome c oxidase-positive bacterial strain, designated S20-91 T , was isolated from alpine forest soil. Growth occurred within a temperature range of 0-25 °C. Yeast extract was required for growth. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequencing showed that strain S20-91 T was related to the genus Herminiimonas and had the highest 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity to Herminiimonas arsenicoxydans ULPAs1 T (96.5 %). The strain contained ubiquinone 8 as the predominant respiratory quinone and phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol and diphosphatidylglycerol as the major polar lipids. The major cellular fatty acids (>10 %) were C16 : 1ω7c (55.3 %) and C16 : 0 (25.6 %). The genomic DNA G+C content was 47.6 mol%. Combined data of genomic, phylogenetic, phenotypic and chemotaxonomic analyses demonstrated that strain S20-91 T represents a novel genus and species, for which the name Solimicrobium silvestre gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is S20-91 T (=DSM 104733 T =LMG 30010).

A Gram-stain-negative, rod-shaped, motile, catalase-positive and cytochrome c oxidase-positive bacterial strain, designated AM20-91 T , was isolated from alpine forest soil. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequencing showed that strain AM20-91 T was related to the genus Lysobacter and had highest 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities to the type strains of Lysobacter novalis THG-PC7 T (97.8 %), Luteimonas tolerans UM1 T (97.7 %) and Lysobacter ximonensis XM415 T (97.0 %). The strain contained ubiquinone 8 as the predominant respiratory quinone; its polar lipid profile contained phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol, diphosphatidylglycerol and two unidentified aminophospholipids. The major cellular fatty acids (>10 %) were iso-C15 : 0, iso-C11 : 0 3-OH and iso-C11 : 0. The DNA G+C content was 63.35 % (draft genome sequence). The combined results of phylogenetic, phenotypic, DNA-DNA relatedness and chemotaxonomic analyses demonstrated that strain AM20-91 T represents a novel species of the genus Lysobacter, for which the name Lysobacter silvestris sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is AM20-91 T (=DSM 104734 T =LMG 30011). In this study, it is also proposed that Luteimonas tolerans be reclassified as member of the genus Lysobacter.

A Gram-stain-positive, flagellated, catalase- and cytochrome c oxidase-positive bacterial strain, designated S20-100 T , was isolated from alpine forest soil. Growth occurred at a temperature range of 0-30 °C, at pH 6-9 and in the presence of 0-1 % (w/v) NaCl. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequence showed that strain S20-100 T was related to the genus Marmoricola and had the highest 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity to Marmoricola ginsengisoli Gsoil 097 T (98.4 %) and Marmoricola solisilvae KIS18-7 T (98.3 %). The cell-wall peptidoglycan of strain S20-100 T contained ll-diaminopimelic acid (ll-Dpm) as the diagnostic diamino acid and was of the type A3γ ll-Dpm - Gly. The strain contained MK-8(H4) as the predominant isoprenoid quinone and diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, four unidentified phospholipids and three unidentified lipids in lower amounts. The major cellular fatty acids (>10 %) were iso-C16 : 0, C17 : 1ω6c and C18 : 1ω9c. The genomic DNA G+C content was 66.2 mol%. Combined data of phylogenetic, phenotypic and chemotaxonomic analyses demonstrated that strain S20-100 T represents a novel species of the genus Marmoricola, for which the name Marmoricola silvestris sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is S20-100 T (=DSM 104694 T =LMG 30008 T ).

A bacterial strain designated TP462 T , isolated from a seamount near the Yap Trench in the tropical western Pacific, was characterized using a polyphasic taxonomic approach. Strain TP462 T was found to be Gram-stain-negative, aerobic, rod-shaped and motile by means of a single polar flagellum. Growth occurred at 4-37 °C (optimum, 25-30 °C) and with 0-4.0 % NaCl (optimum, 2-3 %). Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequence showed that strain TP462 T was related to the genus Rheinheimera and had the highest 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity with the type strain Rheinheimera tangshanensis JA3-B52 T (96.8 %). The predominant cellular fatty acids were C17 : 1ω8c, summed feature 3 (composed of iso-C15 : 0 2-OH and/or C16 : 1ω7c) and C16 : 0. The polar lipid profile contained phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine and two unidentified lipids. The genomic DNA G+C content of strain TP462 T was 48.7 mol%. On the basis of the evidence presented in this study, strain TP462 T represents a novel species of the genus Rheinheimera, for which we propose the name Rheinheimera marina sp. nov. (type strain TP462 T =KACC 18560 T =CGMCC 1.15399 T ).

The Gram-stain-negative, rod-shaped, strictly aerobic, motile bacterial strain, designated YM155 T , was isolated from a seamount near the Yap Trench in the tropical western Pacific. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequence showed that strain YM155 T was related to the genus Thalassotalea and had highest 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities with the type strains of Thalassotalea piscium T202 T (97.2 %) and Thalassotalea agariperforans M-M1 T (97.2 %). The predominant cellular fatty acids were C17 : 1ω8c, summed feature 3 (composed of iso-C15 : 0 2-OH and/or C16 : 1ω7c) and iso-C16 : 0. Ubiquinone 8 (Q-8) was the respiratory quinone. The polar lipid profile contained phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, two unidentified phospholipids and one unidentified lipid. The genomic DNA G+C content of strain YM155 T was 36.1 mol%. On the basis of the evidence presented in this study, strain YM155 T represents a novel species of the genus Thalassotalea, for which we propose the name Thalassotalea profundi sp. nov. (type strain YM155 T =KACC 18563 T =CGMCC 1.15922 T ).

A Gram-stain-negative, rod-shaped, strictly aerobic, motile bacterial strain, designated YM319T, was isolated from a seamount near the Yap Trench in the tropical western Pacific. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequence showed that strain YM319T was related to the genus Oceanisphaera and had highest 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities with the type strains Oceanisphaera profunda SM1222T (97.4 %), Oceanisphaera sediminis TW92T (97.3 %) and Oceanisphaera ostreae T-w6T (97.1 %). The predominant cellular fatty acids were summed feature 3 (composed of iso-C15 : 0 2-OH and/or C16 : 1 ω7c), C16 : 0 and C18 : 1ω7c. Strain YM319T had Q-8 as the predominant ubiquinone. The polar lipid profile contained diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, one unidentified phospholipid and four unidentified lipids. The genomic DNA G+C content of strain YM319T was 54.8 mol%. On the basis of the evidence presented in this study, strain YM319T represents a novel species of the genus Oceanisphaera, for which we propose the name Oceanisphaera marina sp. nov. (type strain YM319T=KACC 18564T=CGMCC 1.15923T).

Two Gram-stain-variable, non-motile, catalase-positive and cytochrome c oxidase-negative bacteria, designated AK20-18 T and AM20-54, were isolated from forest soil samples collected in the Italian Alps. Growth occurred at a temperature range of 5-30 °C, at pH 6-9 and in the presence of 0-5 % (w/v) NaCl. The 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity between strains AK20-18 T and AM20-54 was 100 %. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequence showed that strain AK20-18 T had highest 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity with the type strain of Arthrobacter psychrochitiniphilus (96.9 %). The cell-wall peptidoglycan structure of strain AK20-18 T was of the type A3alpha l-Lys-l-Thr-l-Ala2 (A11.27). The whole-cell sugars were galactose, ribose and lesser amounts of mannose. The major respiratory quinone of the two strains was menaquinone 9(H2) [MK-9(H2)], whereas MK-10(H2) was a minor component. The polar lipids were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylinositol and unknown glycolipids. The major cellular fatty acids were anteiso-C15 : 0, iso-C15 : 0, iso-C16 : 0 and anteiso-C17 : 0. The genomic DNA G+C content was 59.9 mol%. Combined data of phylogenetic, phenotypic and chemotaxonomic analyses demonstrated that strains AK20-18 T and AM20-54 represent a novel genus and species, for which the name Psychromicrobium silvestre gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of Psychromicrobium silvestregen. nov., sp. nov. is AK20-18 T (=DSM 102047 T =LMG 29369 T ).

A Gram-stain-positive, non-motile, catalase-positive and cytochrome c oxidase-negative bacterium, designated strain S20-107T, was isolated from alpine forest soil. Growth occurred at 0-30 °C, at pH 6-9 and in the presence of 0-3 % (w/v) NaCl. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain S20-107T was related to the genus Nakamurella and had the highest 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity with Nakamurella flavida DS-52T (96.1 %). Strain S20-107T showed <96.1% 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities to all other recognized members of the genus Nakamurella. The cell-wall peptidoglycan contained meso-diaminopimelic acid. The major whole-cell sugars were glucose, galactose, mannose, arabinose, ribose and rhamnose. The strain contained MK-8(H4) as the predominant menaquinone and diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine and an unidentified aminophospholipid as the major polar lipids. The major cellular fatty acids were anteiso-C15 : 0, C16 : 0, summed feature 3 (C16 : 1ω6c and/or C16 : 1ω7c and/or iso-C15 : 0 2-OH) and iso-C16 : 0. The genomic DNA G+C content was 70.5 mol%. Combined data of phylogenetic, phenotypic and chemotaxonomic analyses demonstrated that strain S20-107T represents a novel species of the genus Nakamurella, for which the name Nakamurella silvestris sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is S20-107T (=DSM 102309T=LMG 29427T).

A Gram-stain-negative, rod-shaped, strictly aerobic, motile bacterial strain, designated TP162T, was isolated from a seamount near the Yap Trench in the tropical western Pacific. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequence showed that strain TP162T was related to the genus Pseudoalteromonas and had highest 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities with the type strains Pseudoalteromonas shioyasakiensis SE3T (98.2 %), Pseudoalteromonas lipolytica LMEB 39T (97.7 %), Pseudoalteromonas arabiensis k53T (97.4 %) and Pseudoalteromonas aliena KMM 3562T (97.2 %). The predominant cellular fatty acids were summed feature 3 (composed of iso-C15 : 0 2-OH and/or C16 : 1ω7c), C17 : 1ω8c and C16 : 0. The quinone system for strain TP162T comprised predominantly ubiquinone-8, and the polar lipid profile contained phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol, one unidentified phospholipid and four unidentified lipids. The genomic DNA G+C content of strain TP162T was 46.7 mol%. Strain TP162T shared 28 % DNA-DNA relatedness with P.shioyasakiensis JCM 18891T, 21 % with P. lipolytica JCM 15903T, 35 % with P.arabiensis JCM 17292T and 18 % with P.aliena LMG 22059T. Combined data from phenotypic, chemotaxonomic, phylogenetic and DNA-DNA relatedness studies demonstrated that strain TP162T is a representative of a novel species of the genus Pseudoalteromonas, for which we propose the name Pseudoalteromonas profundi sp. nov. (type strain TP162T=KACC 18554T=CGMCC 1.15394T).

A Gram-stain-negative, rod-shaped bacterial strain, designated S9-10T, was isolated from a sediment sample from the Yellow Sea near China. Phylogenetic analysis of 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that strain S9-10T was a member of the family Flavobacteriaceaeand formed a distinct lineage. The genomic DNA G+C content of strain S9-10T was 34.2 mol%. The major respiratory quinone was MK-6. The predominant cellular fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0 (21.1 %), iso-C15 : 1G (16.3 %) and iso-C17 : 0 3-OH (12.0 %). The polar lipid profile contained phosphatidylethanolamine, aminophospholipid, aminoglycolipid, two unidentified aminolipids and five unidentified polar lipids. On the basis of phenotypic, genotypic, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic analyses, strain S9-10T represents a novel species of a novel genus of the family Flavobacteriaceae, for which the name Oceanihabitans sediminis gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of Oceanihabitans sediminis is S9-10T (=DSM 28133T =LMG 28074T).

A Gram-stain-negative, rod-shaped, yellow-pigmented, gliding bacterial strain, designated S5-23-3T, was isolated from a sediment sample of the Yellow Sea in China. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain S5-23-3T was related to the genus Winogradskyella and had highest 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities with Winogradskyella arenosi JCM 15527T (97.6 %), Winogradskyella rapida CECT 7392T (97.4 %) and Winogradskyella undariae KCTC 32261T (97.2 %). The predominant cellular fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0, iso-C15 : 1 G, iso-C15 : 0 3-OH and iso-C17 : 0 3-OH. Strain S5-23-3T contained MK-6 as the predominant menaquinone. The polar lipid profile contained phosphatidylethanolamine, two aminolipids, one aminoglycolipid, one aminophospholipid, one unidentified phospholipid and seven unidentified polar lipids. The genomic DNA G+C content of strain S5-23-3T was 36.1 mol%. Combined data from phenotypic, chemotaxonomic, phylogenetic and DNA-DNA relatedness studies demonstrated that strain S5-23-3T is a representative of a novel species of the genus Winogradskyella, for which the name Winogradskyellasediminis sp. nov. (type strain S5-23-3T=LMG 28075T=DSM 28134T) is proposed.

A Gram-stain-variable, rod-shaped, motile bacterial strain, designated S1-20 T , was isolated from marine sediment of the Yellow Sea in China. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain S1-20 T was related to the genus Virgibacillus and had highest 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities with the type strains of Virgibacillus necropolis (98.1 %), Virgibacillus arcticus (97.7 %) and Virgibacillus carmonensis (97.3 %). The predominant cellular fatty acids of strain S1-20 T were anteiso-C 15 : 0 and anteiso-C 17 : 0 . The main menaquinone was MK-7. The genomic DNA G+C content of strain S1-20 T was 38.3 mol%. The polar lipids profile contained diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, five unidentified phospholipids, one unknown aminophospholipid and an aminolipid. Combined data from phenotypic, phylogenetic and DNA-DNA relatedness studies demonstrated that strain S1-20 T is a representative of a novel species of the genus Virgibacillus , for which the name Virgibacillus flavescens sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is S1-20 T ( = LMG 28381 T  = DSM 29015 T ).

The bacterial strain N1-38 T was isolated from ancient Siberian permafrost sediment. The strain was Gram-reaction-negative, motile by gliding, rod-shaped and psychrophilic, and showed good growth over a temperature range of - 5 to 25 °C. Phylogenetic analysis of 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that strain N1-38 T was most closely related to members of the genus Glaciimonas and shared the highest 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities with the type strains of Glaciimonas alpina (99.3 %), Glaciimonas immobilis (98.9 %) and Glaciimonas singularis (96.5 %). The predominant cellular fatty acids of strain N1-38 T were summed feature 3 (C 16 : 1 ω7 c and/or iso-C 15 : 0 2-OH), C 16 : 0 and C 18 : 1 ω7 c . The major respiratory quinone was ubiquinone 8 and the major polar lipids were phosphatidylethanolamine and diphosphatidylglycerol. The genomic DNA G+C content was 53.0 mol%. Combined data of phenotypic, phylogenetic and DNA-DNA relatedness studies demonstrated that strain N1-38 T represents a novel species of the genus Glaciimonas , for which the name Glaciimonas frigoris sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is N1-38 T ( = LMG 28868 T  = CCOS 838 T ). An emended description of the genus Glaciimonas is also provided.

The Gram-stain-negative, yellow-pigmented, rod-shaped bacterial strain, designated S11-41(T), was isolated from a sediment sample of the Yellow Sea in China. The strain was able to grow well over a wide temperature range (1-35 °C). Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain S11-41(T) was related to the members of the genus Gelidibacter, sharing highest sequence similarities with the type strains of Geldibacter salicanalis (98.2%), Geldibacter algens (97.4%) and Geldibacter mesophilus (96.9%). The genomic DNA G+C content of strain S11-41(T) was 39.2 mol%. The predominant cellular fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0 (13.2%), iso-C17 : 0 3-OH (12.8%) and iso-C15 : 1 G (12.2%). Phosphatidylethanolamine was identified as the major polar lipid. Combined data from phenotypic, phylogenetic and DNA-DNA relatedness studies demonstrated that strain S11-41(T) is a representative of a novel species of the genus Gelidibacter, for which we propose the name Gelidibacter sediminis sp. nov. (type strain S11-41(T)= DSM 28135(T) = LMG 28076(T)).

Psychrophilic bacterial strains were isolated from alpine glaciers in Switzerland and characterized taxonomically. On the basis of phylogenetic analysis of partial 16S rRNA and rpoB genes, three of those strains, strain 79 ( = CCOS 247), strain 4/58 ( = CCOS 250) and strain 4/56 ( = CCOS 258) clustered together with strain Cr9-12T and separately from the type strains Glaciimonas immobilis Cr9-30T and Glaciimonas singularis LMG 27070T. Strain Cr9-12T has been previously described as a strain of G. immobilis. The three newly isolated strains were compared phenotypically with strain Cr9-12T and with the type strains of the species G. immobilis and G. singularis. Cr9-12T and the three novel strains from an alpine glacier in Switzerland were Gram-stain-negative, non-motile, rod-shaped and psychrophilic and showed good growth throughout a temperature range of 1-20 °C and characteristically oxidized d-mannitol, l-fucose and bromosuccinic acid. The predominant cellular fatty acids of strain Cr9-12T and the three novel strains were summed feature 3 (C16 : 1ω7c and/or iso-C15 : 0 2-OH), C16 : 0 and C18 : 1ω7c. The respiratory quinone of these strains was ubiquinone 8 (UQ-8). The genomic DNA G+C content of Cr9-12T was 49.2 mol%. The combined data from phenotypic, phylogenetic and DNA-DNA relatedness studies strongly support the reclassification of strain Cr9-12T as representing a novel species. This strain and the isolates 79 ( = CCOS 247), 4/58 ( = CCOS 250) and 4/56 ( = CCOS 258) are representatives of a novel species of the genus Glaciimonas, for which the name Glaciimonas alpina sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of Glaciimonas alpina is Cr9-12T ( = CCOS 761T = DSM 22814T).

A Gram-reaction-negative, rod-shaped, yellow-pigmented, motile by gliding bacterial strain, designated RU-4-M-4(T), was isolated from intertidal sediment of Sakhalin Island in Russia. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain RU-4-M-4(T) was related to the genus Algibacter and had highest 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity with Algibacter pectinivorans KACC 14153(T) (97.2%). The major cellular fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0 3-OH, C15: 0 and iso-C15 : 1 G. The predominant menaquinone was MK-6. The polar lipid profile contained phosphatidylethanolamine, three unidentified aminolipids and two unidentified lipids. The genomic DNA G+C content of strain RU-4-M-4(T) was 36.4 mol%. Combined data from phenotypic, phylogenetic and DNA-DNA relatedness studies demonstrated that strain RU-4-M-4(T) is a representative of a novel species of the genus Algibacter , for which we propose the name Algibacter amylolyticus sp. nov. A Gram-stain-negative, Na(+)-requiring bacterial strain, designated B20-1(T), was isolated from soil of the root system of mangrove forest. Cells were curved rods and motile by means of a polar flagellum. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain B20-1(T) belonged to the genus Marinomonas , sharing highest sequence similarities with Marinomonas rhizomae IVIA-Po-145(T) (97.6%), Marinomonas dokdonensis DSW10-10(T) (97.0%) and Marinomonas foliarum IVIA-Po-155(T) (96.9%). The predominant cellular fatty acids of strain B20-1(T) were C10 : 0 3-OH, C18 : 1ω7c, summed feature 3 (C16 : 1ω7c and/or iso-C15 : 0 2-OH) and C16 : 0. Phosphatidylethanolamine and phosphatidylglycerol were identified as the predominant phospholipids. The predominant ubiquinone was Q-8. The genomic DNA G+C content of strain B20-1(T) was 46.6 mol%. The Gram-stain-negative, rod-shaped bacterial strain designated RU-1-R-18(T) was isolated from intertidal sediment on Sakhalin Island in Russia. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain RU-1-R-18(T) was related to the genus Puniceibacterium and shared highest sequence similarities with the type strain Puniceibacterium antarcticum KACC 16875(T) (97.9%). The predominant cellular fatty acid was C(18:1)ω7c. The polar lipid profile contained diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylcholine, one unidentified aminophospholipid and seven unidentified polar lipids. The genomic DNA G+C content of strain RU-1-R-18(T) was 59.1 mol%. Two Gram-stain-negative, non-motile, rod-shaped bacterial strains, designated BM5-7(T) and BM9-1(T) were isolated from soil of the root system of a mangrove forest. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that the two isolates belong to the genus Martelella. The chemotaxonomic characteristics of these isolates included the presence of C19 : 0 cyclo ω8c and C18 : 1ω7c as the major cellular fatty acids and Q-10 as the dominant ubiquinone. The genomic DNA G+C contents of strains BM5-7(T) and BM9-1(T) were 61.0 and 59.7 mol% (HPLC method), respectively. The 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity between the two strains was 98.1 %, but DNA-DNA hybridization indicated 44 % relatedness. Strains BM5-7(T) and BM9-1(T) exhibited 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities of 98.0-99.2 % and 97.7-98.1 %, respectively, with type strains of Martelella endophytica and Martelella mediterranea. Combined data from phenotypic, phylogenetic and DNA-DNA relatedness studies demonstrated that strains BM5-7(T) and BM9-1(T) are representatives of two novel species of the genus Martelella, for which the names Martelella radicis sp. nov. (type strain BM5-7(T) = DSM 28101(T) = LMG 27958(T)) and Martelella mangrovi sp. nov. (type strain BM9-1(T) = DSM 28102(T) = LMG 27959(T)) are proposed., (© 2014 IUMS.)

A Gram-staining-negative, pale-pink-pigmented, non-motile, obligately aerobic and rod-shaped bacterium, designated strain W37(T), was isolated from soil and subjected to a taxonomic investigation using a polyphasic approach. The strain grew at 1-30 °C, oxidized thiosulfate and accumulated polyhydroxyalkanoates. Photosynthetic pigments were represented by bacteriochlorophyll a and carotenoids. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that strain W37(T) was most closely related to members of the genera Roseococcus and Rubritepida (with sequence similarities of <92.8 %) but formed a distinct lineage in the family Acetobacteraceae. The polar lipid profile comprised diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylcholine, three unidentified aminolipids and one other unidentified lipid. The predominant cellular fatty acids were C18 : 1ω7c and summed feature 3 (C16 : 1ω7c and/or iso-C15 : 0 2-OH). The DNA G+C content of strain W37(T) was 68.2 mol%. On the basis of phenotypic characteristics and phylogenetic analysis, strain W37(T) represents a novel species of a new genus in the family Acetobacteraceae, for which the name Humitalea rosea gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of the type species is W37(T) ( = CIP 110261(T) = LMG 26243(T)).

A Gram-staining-negative, red-pigmented, psychrophilic, non-motile and rod-shaped bacterial strain, designated W1(T), was isolated from soil and subjected to a polyphasic taxonomic investigation. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain W1(T) grouped with members of the genus Pedobacter and formed a distinct cluster with the type strain of Pedobacter composti (97.8 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity). Levels of 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity between strain W1(T) and the type strains of all other recognized species of the genus Pedobacter available at the time of writing were <97.0 %. The predominant cellular fatty acids (≥ 10 %) of strain W1(T) were summed feature 3 (iso-C(15 : 0) 2-OH and/or C(16 : 1)ω7c) and anteiso-C(15 : 0). The only menaquinone was MK-7. The genomic DNA G+C content was 39.0 mol% (HPLC). Combined data from phenotypic, phylogenetic and DNA-DNA relatedness studies demonstrated that strain W1(T) is a representative of a novel species of the genus Pedobacter, for which we propose the name Pedobacter ruber sp. nov. The type strain is W1(T) ( = DSM 24536(T) = LMG 26240(T)).

The taxonomic positions of two Gram-staining-negative, psychrophilic bacteria, which were isolated from alpine glacier cryoconite and designated strains Cr4-12(T) and Cr4-35(T), were investigated using a polyphasic approach. Both novel strains contained ubiquinone Q-8 as the sole quinone, summed feature 3 (C(16:1)ω7c and/or C(16:1)ω6c) and C(16:0) as the dominant cellular fatty acids, putrescine and 2-hydroxyputrescine as the major polyamines, and diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol and phosphatidylethanolamine as the major polar lipids. The genomic DNA G+C contents of strains Cr4-12(T) and Cr4-35(T) were 61.3 mol% and 60.7 mol%, respectively. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that the two strains belonged to the genus Polaromonas. Although the 16S rRNA gene sequences of strains Cr4-12(T) and Cr4-35(T) were very similar (98.7% sequence similarity), hybridizations indicated a DNA-DNA relatedness value of only 26.9% between the two novel strains. In pairwise comparisons with the type strains of recognized Polaromonas species, strains Cr4-12(T) and Cr4-35(T) showed 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities of 96.4-98.5% and 96.5-98.4%, respectively. Based on the phenotypic and phylogenetic evidence and DNA-DNA relatedness data, strains Cr4-12(T) and Cr4-35(T) represent two novel species within the genus Polaromonas, for which the names Polaromonas glacialis sp. nov. and Polaromonas cryoconiti sp. nov., respectively, are proposed. The type strain of Polaromonas glacialis sp. nov. is Cr4-12(T) (=DSM 24062(T) =LMG 26049(T) =KACC 15089(T)) and that of Polaromonas cryoconiti sp. nov. is Cr4-35(T) (=DSM 24248(T) =LMG 26050(T) =KACC 15090(T)).

A Gram-type positive, Gram-reaction variable, non-motile, psychrophilic actinobacterium, designated Cr8-25(T), was isolated from alpine glacier cryoconite and was able to grow well over a temperature range of 1-15 °C. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that strain Cr8-25(T) belonged to the family Microbacteriaceae and showed highest 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity with Klugiella xanthotipulae 44C3(T) (97.0%). However, strain Cr8-25(T) could be differentiated from the type strain of K. xanthotipulae on the level of genomospecies by a DNA-DNA relatedness value of only 37.2%. Strain Cr8-25(T) contained a cell-wall peptidoglycan that was cross-linked according to the B-type, which is based on 2,4-diaminobutyric acid. The cell wall contained the sugars galactose, fucose and rhamnose. The predominant cellular fatty acids of strain Cr8-25(T) were C(15:0) anteiso (64.6%) and iso-C(16:0) (22.5%) and the major menaquinones were MK-11 and MK-10. The major polar lipids were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol and unknown glycolipids. The G+C content of the genomic DNA was 58.8 mol%. On the basis of the phenotypic characteristics, phylogenetic and chemotaxonomic analyses and DNA-DNA relatedness data, strain Cr8-25(T) represents a novel species of a new genus in the family Microbacteriaceae, for which the name Alpinimonas psychrophila gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is Cr8-25(T) (=DSM 23737(T)=LMG 26215(T)).

A Gram-negative, facultatively anaerobic, psychrophilic, motile rod, designated BZ59(T), was isolated from hydrocarbon-contaminated soil. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain BZ59(T) belonged to the genus Candidimonas and had highest 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity with Candidimonas nitroreducens SC-089(T) (97.7 %) and Candidimonas humi SC-092(T) (97.6 %). The ubiquinone was Q-8 and the major fatty acids were C(16 : 0), C(17 : 0) cyclo and summed feature 3 (C(16 : 1)ω7c and/or iso-C(15 : 0) 2-OH). The polar lipid profile contained the major compounds phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylmonomethylethanolamine and diphosphatidylglycerol. The major polyamines were putrescine and spermidine; a minor amount of 2-hydroxyputrescine was present. The DNA G+C content of strain BZ59(T) was 61.6 mol%. Combined data from phenotypic, phylogenetic and DNA-DNA relatedness studies demonstrated that strain BZ59(T) represents a novel species of the genus Candidimonas, for which the name Candidimonas bauzanensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is BZ59(T) (= DSM 22805(T) = LMG 26046(T) = CGMCC 1.10190(T)). The description of the genus Candidimonas is emended.

An aerobic, Gram-negative-staining, motile, psychrophilic bacterium, designated strain S8-3(T), was isolated from alpine soil. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain S8-3(T) was related to the genus Sphingomonas and had highest 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity with Sphingomonas oligophenolica S213(T) (98.0%). 16S RNA gene sequence similarity between strain S8-3(T) and Sphingomonas paucimobilis ATCC 29837(T) (the type species of the genus Sphingomonas) was 93.0%. Strain S8-3(T) contained Q-10 as the ubiquinone and C(18:1)ω7c (65.0%) and C(14:0) 2-OH (13.4%) as the dominant fatty acids (>10%). The major polyamines were the triamine sym-homospermidine and spermidine. The polar lipid profile contained sphingoglycolipid, phosphatidylglycerol, diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine and phosphatidylmonomethylethanolamine. The DNA G+C content was 64.1 mol%. Combined data from phenotypic, phylogenetic and DNA-DNA relatedness studies demonstrated that strain S8-3(T) is a representative of a novel species of the genus Sphingomonas, for which the name Sphingomonas alpina sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is S8-3(T) (=DSM 22537(T)=LMG 26055(T)).

Two psychrophilic strains, Cr7-05(T) and Cr4-44(T), isolated from alpine glacier cryoconite, were characterized by using a polyphasic approach. Both strains were psychrophilic, showing good growth over a temperature range of 1-20 °C. The chemotaxonomic characteristics of these isolates included the presence of C(18:1)ω7c and summed feature 3 (C(16:1)ω7c and/or C(16:1)ω6c) as the major cellular fatty acids, Q-10 as the predominant ubiquinone and diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol and unknown glycolipids as major polar lipids. The DNA G+C contents of strains Cr7-05(T) and Cr4-44(T) were 61.4 and 63.6 mol%, respectively. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that the two isolates belong to the genus Devosia. The 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity between the two strains was 98.6%, but DNA-DNA hybridization indicated 54% relatedness. Strains Cr7-05(T) and Cr4-44(T) exhibited 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity of 94.7-97.2 and 94.9-96.9%, respectively, to the type strains of recognized Devosia species. On the basis of phenotypic characteristics, phylogenetic analysis and DNA-DNA relatedness data, strains Cr7-05(T) and Cr4-44(T) represent two novel species within the genus Devosia, for which the names Devosia psychrophila sp. nov. (type strain Cr7-05(T) =DSM 22950(T) =CGMCC 1.10210(T) =CIP 110130(T)) and Devosia glacialis sp. nov. (type strain Cr4-44(T) =CGMCC 1.10691(T) =LMG 26051(T)) are proposed. An emended description of the genus Devosia is also provided.

A Gram-stain-positive, aerobic, non-motile, psychrophilic bacterium, designated strain Cr6-08(T), was isolated from alpine glacier cryoconite. Growth of strain Cr6-08(T) occurred at 1-25 °C. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that strain Cr6-08(T) is most closely related to members of the genus Arthrobacter. Strain Cr6-08(T) possessed chemotaxonomic properties consistent with those of the genus Arthrobacter, such as peptidoglycan type A3α (l-Lys-L-Ala(4)), MK-9(H(2)) as major menaquinone and anteiso- and iso-branched compounds (anteiso-C(15 : 0) and iso-C(15 : 0)) as major cellular fatty acids. The polar lipid profile contained diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylinositol, one unknown glycolipid and three unknown polar lipids. The genomic DNA G+C content of strain Cr6-08(T) was 57.3 mol%. On the basis of phenotypic and chemotaxonomic characteristics, phylogenetic analysis and DNA-DNA relatedness data, strain Cr6-08(T) is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Arthrobacter, for which the name Arthrobacter cryoconiti sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is Cr6-08(T) ( = DSM 23324(T)  = LMG 26052(T)  = CGMCC 1.10698(T)).

A gram-positive, non-motile, rod-shaped, psychrophilic actinomycete, designated strain Cr7-14(T), was isolated from alpine glacier cryoconite. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain Cr7-14(T) was related to members of the genus Nocardioides and shared highest 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities with the type strains of Nocardioides furvisabuli (98.6 %), Nocardioides ganghwensis (98.2 %), Nocardioides oleivorans (98.1 %) and Nocardioides exalbidus (97.6 %). The predominant cellular fatty acids of strain Cr7-14(T) were C(17 : 1)ω8c (39.5 %) and iso-C(16 : 0) (32.4 %). The major menaquinone was MK-8(H(4)). The diagnostic diamino acid in the cell-wall peptidoglycan was ll-2,6-diaminopimelic acid. The predominant cell-wall sugars were galactose and rhamnose. The polar lipid pattern contained diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylinositol, four unknown glycolipids and two unknown polar lipids. The genomic DNA G+C content was 71.9 mol%. On the basis of phenotypic characteristics, phylogenetic analysis and DNA-DNA relatedness data, a novel species, Nocardioides alpinus sp. nov., is proposed, with Cr7-14(T) ( = DSM 23325(T) = LMG 26053(T) = CGMCC 1.10697(T)) as the type strain.

A Gram-negative, aerobic, motile rod, designated BZ93(T), was isolated from soil from an industrial site. The strain grew at 5-30 °C. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain BZ93(T) was related to members of the genus Pseudomonas and was related most closely to Pseudomonas xiamenensis C10-2(T) (97.8 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity) and Pseudomonas pertucinogena IFO 14163(T) (97.4 %). The predominant cellular fatty acids of strain BZ93(T) were C(18 : 1)ω7c (54.8 %), summed feature 3 (C(16 : 1)ω7c and/or iso-C(15 : 0) 2-OH; 10.3 %), C(16 : 0) (9.9 %) and C(17 : 0) cyclo (7.4 %). The major quinone was ubiquinone 9. The major phospholipids were phosphatidylethanolamine, diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol and an unknown phospholipid. The genomic DNA G+C content was 61.8 mol%. On the basis of phenotypic characteristics, phylogenetic analysis and DNA-DNA relatedness, a novel species, Pseudomonas bauzanensis sp. nov., is proposed. The type strain is BZ93(T) ( = DSM 22558(T)  = CGMCC 1.9095(T) = LMG 26048(T)).

Strains Cr9-30(T) and Cr9-12 were isolated from alpine glacier cryoconite. Both strains were Gram-negative-staining, non-motile, rod-shaped and psychrophilic, showing good growth over the temperature range 1-20 °C. Phylogenetic analysis of 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that the two strains formed a distinct branch within the family Oxalobacteraceae and were most closely related to members of the genus Collimonas. The 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity between strains Cr9-30(T) and Cr9-12 was 99.0 %. The two strains showed highest 16S rRNA gene sequence pairwise similarity with Collimonas pratensis LMG 23965(T) (96.6 and 96.1 % for strains Cr9-30(T) and Cr9-12, respectively), Collimonas arenae LMG 23964(T) (96.5 and 96.3 %, respectively) and Collimonas fungivorans LMG 21973(T) (96.4 and 96.2 %, respectively). The predominant cellular fatty acids were summed feature 3 (C₁₆:₁ω7c and/or iso-C₁₅:₀ 2-OH), C₁₆:₀ and C₁₈:₁ω7c. The DNA G+C content of strain Cr9-30(T) was 51.0 mol%. On the basis of phenotypic characteristics and phylogenetic analysis, strains Cr9-30(T) and Cr9-12 represent a novel species in a new genus of the family Oxalobacteraceae, for which the name Glaciimonas immobilis gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of Glaciimonas immobilis is Cr9-30(T) ( = DSM 23240(T) = LMG 25547(T)).

A Gram-reaction-negative, strictly aerobic, motile, rod-shaped bacterium, designated strain BZ78(T), was isolated from soil from an industrial site. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain BZ78(T) belonged to the family Rhodospirillaceae and formed a coherent cluster with the type strain of Tistrella mobilis (98.3 % pairwise similarity). The predominant cellular fatty acids of strain BZ78(T) were C₁₈:₁ω7c (58.3 %), C₁₉:₀ω8c cyclo (11.5 %), C₁₈:₁ 2-OH (10.9 %) and C₁₄:₀ 3-OH (6.4 %). The predominant ubiquinone was Q-10. The genomic DNA G+C content of strain BZ78(T) was 65.8 mol%. On the basis of phenotypic characteristics, phylogenetic analysis and DNA-DNA relatedness data, strain BZ78(T) is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Tistrella, for which the name Tistrella bauzanensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is BZ78(T) ( = DSM 22817(T)  = CGMCC 1.10188(T)  = LMG 26047(T)).

A non-motile, rod-shaped, red-pigmented bacterium, designated strain BZ33r(T), was isolated from soil of an industrial site. Cells stained Gram-negative and were aerobic and psychrophilic, showing good growth at 1-20 °C. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain BZ33r(T) was related to members of the genus Hymenobacter and had highest sequence similarity with Hymenobacter aerophilus DSM 13606(T) (97.5 %). The predominant cellular fatty acids were anteiso-C(15 : 0) (20.3 %), summed feature 3 (C(16 : 1)ω7c and/or iso-C(15 : 0) 2-OH; 20.2 %), iso-C(15 : 0) (20.0 %), summed feature 4 (iso-C(17 : 1) I and/or anteiso-C(17 : 1) B; 8.2 %) and C(16 : 1)ω5c (7.9 %). Strain BZ33r(T) had MK-7 as the major menaquinone. The polyamine pattern contained sym-homospermidine as the major compound with moderate amounts of spermidine. Phosphatidylethanolamine, three unknown aminophospholipids, two unknown aminolipids, two unknown glycolipids and five unknown polar lipids were present in the polar lipid profile. The G+C content of the DNA was 61.6 mol%. On the basis of phenotypic characteristics, phylogenetic analysis and DNA-DNA relatedness data, strain BZ33r(T) is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Hymenobacter, for which the name Hymenobacter psychrophilus sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is BZ33r(T) ( = DSM 22290(T)  = CGMCC 1.8975(T)  = LMG 25548(T)).

A non-motile, rod-shaped, yellow bacterium, designated C16y(T), was isolated from alpine glacier cryoconite. Cells behaved Gram-positively, were aerobic and psychrophilic (good growth at 1-25 °C). Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain C16y(T) was related to the genus Sphingomonas and had highest 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity with Sphingomonas oligophenolica JCM 12082(T) (97.6  %) and Sphingomonas echinoides DSM 1805(T) (97.2  %). DNA-DNA hybridization demonstrated that strain C16y(T) could not be considered as a member of either Sphingomonas oligophenolica or Sphingomonas echinoides. Strain C16y(T) contained Q-10 as the predominant ubiquinone and C₁₈:₁ and C₁₆:₀ were the dominant fatty acids. The polar lipid profile contained phosphatidylglycerol, diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, sphingoglycolipid, five unidentified glycolipids, two unidentified aminophospholipids and two unidentified lipids. The major polyamines were the triamines sym-homospermidine and spermidine. The G+C content was 67.9 mol%. Combined data from phenotypic, phylogenetic and DNA-DNA relatedness studies demonstrated that strain C16y(T) is a representative of a novel species of the genus Sphingomonas, for which we propose the name Sphingomonas glacialis sp. nov. The type strain is C16y(T) (=DSM 22294(T) =CGMCC 1.8957(T) =CIP 110131(T) [corrected]).

Strain BZ30(T) was isolated from hydrocarbon-contaminated soil. The Gram-negative, aerobic bacterium was psychrophilic and able to grow at temperatures ranging from 1 to 30&emsp14;°C. The predominant cellular fatty acids of strain BZ30(T) were summed feature 3 (C(16 : 1)ω7c and/or iso-C(15 : 0) 2-OH) (37.4 %), C(18 : 1)ω7c (19.6 %), C(16 : 0) (8.2 %), C(14 : 0) 2-OH (8.0 %) and C(16 : 0) 2-OH (5.0 %). The predominant ubiquinone was Q-10. Major polar lipids were sphingoglycolipids, diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine and phosphatidylcholine. Spermidine was the major polyamine. The genomic DNA G+C content was 64.4 mol%. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity showed that strain BZ30(T) belonged to the family Sphingomonadaceae of the α-4 group of the phylum Proteobacteria, and was related to the members of the genus Sphingopyxis, sharing the highest sequence similarities with the type strains of Sphingopyxis chilensis (98.3 %), S. witflariensis (98.2 %), S. taejonensis (97.4 %) and S. ginsengisoli (97.2 %). On the basis of the phenotypic characteristics, phylogenetic analysis and DNA-DNA relatedness data, strain BZ30(T) represents a novel species of the genus Sphingopyxis, for which the name Sphingopyxis bauzanensis is proposed. The type strain is BZ30(T) (=DSM 22271(T) =CGMCC 1.8959(T) =CIP 110136(T)).

A Gram-negative, aerobic, rod-shaped, non-motile bacterium, designated BZ42(T), was isolated from the soil of an industrial site. Strain BZ42(T) was able to grow at 5-25 °C. The major fatty acids were iso-C(15 : 0) (46.2 %), C(16 : 1)ω7c and/or iso-C(15 : 0) 2-OH (23.2 %) and iso-C(17 : 0) 3-OH (9.1 %). The predominant menaquinone was MK-7. The genomic DNA G+C content was 36.5 mol% (HPLC). 16S rRNA gene sequence phylogenetic analysis revealed that strain BZ42(T) was a member of the genus Pedobacter, family Sphingobacteriaceae, and 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities between strain BZ42(T) and the type strains of species of the genus Pedobacter with validly published names were 90.4-93.2 %. On the basis of phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic distinctiveness, strain BZ42(T) was considered to represent a novel species of the genus Pedobacter, for which the name Pedobacter bauzanensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is BZ42(T) (=DSM 22554(T) =CGMCC 1.10187(T) =CIP 110134(T)).

A Gram-stain-positive, aerobic bacterium, designated strain BZ41(T), was isolated from hydrocarbon-contaminated soil. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain BZ41(T) was related to members of the genus Agromyces and showed highest similarity with the type strain of Agromyces ramosus (96.8 %). The morphological, biochemical and chemotaxonomic characteristics of the new isolate were consistent with the description of the genus Agromyces. The cell-wall peptidoglycan of strain BZ41(T) was of type B2γ and contained the amino acids 2,4-diaminobutyric acid, alanine, glycine and glutamic acid in an approximate molar ratio of 1.8 : 0.7 : 1.1 : 1.0. The predominant cell-wall sugars were galactose, glucose, mannose and rhamnose. Strain BZ41(T) had MK-12 and MK-11 as major menaquinones and contained anteiso-C₁₅:₀ and anteiso-C₁₇:₀ as major fatty acids. The genomic DNA G+C content of strain BZ41(T) was 69.7 mol%. On the basis of phenotypic characteristics and genotypic analysis, strain BZ41(T) is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Agromyces, for which the name Agromyces bauzanensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is BZ41(T) (=DSM 22275(T) =CGMCC 1.8984(T)).

An aerobic, Gram-reaction-positive, non-motile, psychrophilic bacterium, designated strain S6-3(T), was isolated from alpine soil. Cells exhibited a rod-coccus growth cycle and produced a yellow pigment. Growth occurred at 1-25 degrees C. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain S6-3(T) was related to members of the genus Arthrobacter, sharing highest sequence similarities with the type strains of Arthrobacter psychrolactophilus (97.9 %) and Arthrobacter stackebrandtii (97.6 %). Strain S6-3(T) had MK-9(H(2)) as the major menaquinone and anteiso-C(15 : 0) as the major fatty acid. The cell-wall peptidoglycan was of type A3alpha l-Lys-l-Thr-Ala(3). The predominant cell-wall sugars were galactose and rhamnose. The genomic DNA G+C content of strain S6-3(T) was 61.9 mol%. On the basis of phenotypic characteristics, phylogenetic analysis and DNA-DNA relatedness data, strain S6-3(T) is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Arthrobacter, for which the name Arthrobacter alpinus sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is S6-3(T) (=DSM 22274(T) =CGMCC 1.8950(T)).

A Gram-negative, aerobic bacterium, designated strain BZ26(T), was isolated from hydrocarbon-contaminated soil. The strain was psychrophilic, showing good growth over a temperature range of 1-20 degrees C. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain BZ26(T) was related to members of the genus Dyadobacter and had highest 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity to Dyadobacter alkalitolerans 12116(T) (98.1 %), Dyadobacter koreensis KCTC 12537(T) (97.5 %) and Dyadobacter ginsengisoli Gsoil 043(T) (97.2 %). Strain BZ26(T) had MK-7 as the major menaquinone and summed feature 3 (C(16 : 1)omega7c/iso-C(15 : 0) 2-OH), C(16 : 1)omega5c and iso-C(15 : 0) as major fatty acids. The genomic DNA G+C content of strain BZ26(T) was 48.9 mol%. On the basis of phenotypic characteristics and genotypic analysis, strain BZ26(T) is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Dyadobacter, for which the name Dyadobacter psychrophilus sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is BZ26(T) (=DSM 22270(T) =CGMCC 1.8951(T)).

Strain BZ92r(T) was isolated from hydrocarbon-contaminated soil. Cells were Gram-negative, aerobic, rod-shaped and cold-adapted (growth at 1-25 degrees C). The major fatty acids were iso-C(15 : 0) (25.6 %), iso-C(17 : 1)omega9c (24.9 %), iso-C(11 : 0) (18.4 %) and iso-C(11 : 0) 3-OH (16.2 %). The predominant ubiquinone was ubiquinone-8. The genomic DNA G+C content was 72.0 mol%. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that strain BZ92r(T) was a member of the genus Luteimonas (94.5-95.2 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity). On the basis of phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic distinctiveness, strain BZ92r(T) was considered to represent a novel species of the genus Luteimonas. The name Luteimonas terricola sp. nov. is proposed, with BZ92r(T) (=DSM 22344(T) =CGMCC 1.8985(T)) as the type strain.

A taxonomic study was performed on strain QM42(T), which was isolated from coastal seawater from an aquaculture site near Qingdao, China. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain QM42(T) was a member of the class Gammaproteobacteria. Cells of strain QM42(T) were Gram-negative, yellow, aerobic and rod-shaped. The strain formed a distinct phyletic line with less than 91 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity to its closest relatives with validly published names within the class Gammaproteobacteria. The genomic DNA G+C content was 51.9 mol%. The major fatty acids were C(16 : 1)omega7c/iso-C(15 : 0) 2-OH, C(18 : 1)omega7c and C(16 : 0). Based on data from a polyphasic chemotaxonomic, physiological and biochemical study, strain QM42(T) is considered to represent a novel genus and species, for which the name Gilvimarinus chinensis gen. nov., sp. nov., is proposed. The type strain is QM42(T) (=CGMCC 1.7008(T)=DSM 19667(T)).

A novel cold-living, Gram-stain-negative, yellow-pigmented and obligately aerobic bacterium designated strain 0563(T) was isolated from the China No. 1 glacier. Phylogenetic analysis showed that strain 0563(T) was a member of the genus Flavobacterium, sharing the highest 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities with Flavobacterium limicola JCM 11473(T) (98.5 %) and Flavobacterium psychrolimnae NBRC 102679(T) (98.2 %). The genomic DNA G+C content was 34.8 mol%. Strain 0563(T) displayed the common phenotypic and chemotaxonomic features of the genus Flavobacterium, containing menaquinone-6 (MK-6) as the major quinone and iso-C(15 : 0), iso-C(15 : 0) 3-OH, summed feature 3 (comprising C(16 : 1)omega7c and/or C(16 : 1)omega6c), C(15 : 1)omega6c, iso-C(15 : 1) G and iso-C(16 : 0) 3-OH as the major fatty acids. On the basis of phenotypic characteristics, phylogenetic analysis and DNA-DNA relatedness data, the novel species Flavobacterium tiangeerense sp. nov. is proposed; the type strain is 0563(T) (=CGMCC 1.6847(T) =JCM 15087(T)).

A novel aerobic, psychrotolerant, yellow-to-orange bacterium (strain 0423(T)) was isolated from the China No. 1 glacier. Strain 0423(T) displayed phenotypic and chemotaxonomic features of the genus Planomicrobium, containing anteiso-C(15 : 0) and iso-C(14 : 0) as the major fatty acids. The temperature range for growth was 4-28 degrees C, with optimum growth at 20-21 degrees C. The genomic DNA G+C content was 49 mol%. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity showed that strain 0423(T) was related to members of the genus Planomicrobium, sharing the highest sequence similarities with the type strains of Planomicrobium chinense, P. mcmeekinii, P. okeanokoites and P. koreense. On the basis of phenotypic characteristics, phylogenetic analysis and DNA-DNA relatedness data, a novel species, Planomicrobium glaciei sp. nov., is proposed. The type strain is 0423(T) (=CGMCC 1.6846(T) =JCM 15088(T)).

Strain 78-123T was isolated from a sample of a bird's nest situated on the bank of Qiongtailan River in the region of Tuomuer Peak of Tianshan Mountain in the Xin-jiang Uygur Autonomous Region in north-western China. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity showed that strain 78-123T was related to members of the genus Pseudomonas. 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity between strain 78-123T and Pseudomonas mendocina ATCC 25411T, Pseudomonas pseudoalcaligenes JCM 5968T and Pseudomonas alcaliphila AL15-21T was 97.1, 97.4 and 97.5 %, respectively. The major cellular fatty acids were C(16 : 0), C(16 : 1)omega7c and/or iso-C(15 : 0) 2-OH, C(18 : 1)omega7c and C(12 : 0). The G+C content was 60.4 mol%. On the basis of the phenotypic characteristics, phylogenetic analysis and DNA-DNA relatedness data, the novel species Pseudomonas tuomuerensis sp. nov. is proposed, with the type strain 78-123T (=CGMCC 1.1365T =JCM 14085T).

A novel psychrophilic, Gram-positive, yellow-pigmented and aerobic bacterium, strain 0543(T), was isolated from the China No. 1 glacier. Strain 0543(T) was able to grow at 4-23 degrees C, with optimum growth at 18-19 degrees C. The major fatty acids were anteiso-C(15 : 0) (58.36 %), iso-C(16 : 0) (21.13 %), iso-C(14 : 0) (10.25 %) and anteiso-C(17 : 0) (7.16 %). The genomic DNA G+C content was 63.5 mol% and the major menaquinone was MK-10. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that strain 0543(T) represented a lineage within the family Microbacteriaceae, with the highest similarity of 97.4 % with Salinibacterium amurskyense KMM 3673(T). On the basis of polyphasic, chemotaxonomic, physiological and biochemical evidence from this study, the novel species Salinibacterium xinjiangense sp. nov. is proposed; the type strain is 0543(T)(=CGMCC 1.5381(T) =JCM 13926(T)).

A Gram-positive, psychrophilic, rod-shaped bacterium, designated strain N-05(T), was isolated from soil samples collected off King George Island, west Antarctica (6 degrees 13' 31'' S 5 degrees 57' 08'' W). Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain N-05(T) was related to members of the genus Sporosarcina and had highest 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity with the type strain of Sporosarcina macmurdoensis (98.0%). The temperature range for growth of strain N-05(T) was 0-23 degrees C, with optimum growth occurring at 17-18 degrees C and approximately pH 6.0-8.0. Strain N-05(T) had MK-7 as the major menaquinone and anteiso-C(15:0) and C(16:1)omega7c alcohol as major fatty acids. The genomic DNA G+C content was 39.2 mol%. On the basis of phenotypic characteristics, phylogenetic analysis and DNA-DNA relatedness data, strain N-05(T) is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Sporosarcina, for which the name Sporosarcina antarctica is proposed. The type strain is N-05(T) (=CGMCC 1.6503(T)=JCM 14646(T)).

A novel psychrotolerant, Gram-negative, aerobic bacterium, designated strain 537T, was isolated from sea-ice samples from the Arctic. Strain 537T was able to grow at 4-26 degrees C, with optimum growth occurring at 20-21 degrees C. Strain 537T had Q-8 as the major respiratory quinone and contained iso-C15:0 2-OH and/or C16:1 omega7c (22.95 %), C15:1 (17.64 %) and C17:1 omega8c (13.74 %) as the predominant cellular fatty acids. The genomic DNA G+C content was 38.9 mol%. A phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that strain 537T formed a coherent cluster within the genus Colwellia. The highest level of 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity (97.5 %) exhibited by strain 537T was obtained with respect to the type strain of Colwellia aestuarii. On the basis of phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic properties and DNA-DNA relatedness data, strain 537T represents a novel species of the genus Colwellia, for which the name Colwellia polaris sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is 537T (=CGMCC 1.6132T =JCM 13952T).
