The Cleveland Public Library (CPL) in Ohio will begin circulating e-books in March, 2003 with a twist: patrons will be able to access the material at home as well as via a variety of handheld devices. The project represents the first collaboration with a public library launched by the Cleveland-based digital media firm OverDrive. Some 1000 titles initially will be available for use on almost all full-size PCs, laptops, and handhelds. Patricia Lowrey, head of CPL's technical services, says that 'CliffsNotes,' test guides, and computer books may be some of the most popular titles. Along with reference materials, the circulating e-collection also will include best-selling titles from authors such as Michael Crichton, Tony Hillerman, and Joyce Carol Oates. Titles will be listed in the regular library catalog as well as in a special e-book section of the library web site. While OverDrive has previously worked with bookstores, it has to set up a new model for libraries. For example, rather than an individual purchaser acquiring content in perpetuity, e-books will expire three weeks after checkout. Also, one copy of a title will be available to one person at a time, as with a paper book. The project, including the initial collection and all of the software, will cost about $50,000, which will come from CPL's automation budget.
