Abstract

International audience; Statistical reasoning can be enhanced at an early stage by facilitating informal statistical reasoning and developing conventional measures based on individual conceptions. This paper aims at identifying young students´ conceptions of the median and their relations to its definition. For this, we present a design research study with grade 3 students (age 9) focusing on the comparison of two groups. The qualitative analysis of complementary interviews shows that young students already develop an initial understanding of the median but struggle to find the conventional reference for the middle. Consequences will be drawn for further design cycles.

Abstract

International audience; To succeed with the development of modern software, organizations must have the agility to adapt faster to constantly evolving environments to deliver more reliable and optimized solutions that can be adapted to the needs and environments of their stakeholders including users, customers, business, development, and IT. However, stakeholders do not have sufficient automated support for global decision making, considering the increasing variability of the solution space, the frequent lack of explicit representation of its associated variability and decision points, and the uncertainty of the impact of decisions on stakeholders and the solution space. This leads to an ad-hoc decision making process that is slow, error-prone, and often favors local knowledge over global, organization-wide objectives. The Multi-Plane Models and Data (MP-MODA) framework explicitly represents and manages variability, impacts, and decision points. It enables automation and tool support in aid of a multi-criteria decision making process involving different stakeholders within a feedback-driven software development process where feedback cycles aim to reduce uncertainty. We present the conceptual structure of the framework, discuss its potential benefits, and enumerate key challenges related to tool supported automation and analysis within MP-MODA.

Abstract

In this work we study the convergence of generic stochastic search algorithms toward the Pareto set of continuous multi-objective optimization problems. The focus is on obtaining a finite approximation that should capture the entire solution set in a suitable sense, which will be defined using the concept of $\epsilon$-dominance. Under mild assumptions about the process to generate new candidate solutions, the limit approximation set will be determined entirely by the archiving strategy. We investigate two different archiving strategies which lead to a different limit behavior of the algorithms, yielding bounds on the obtained approximation quality as well as on the cardinality of the resulting Pareto set approximation. Finally, we demonstrate the potential for a possible hybridization of a given stochastic search algorithm with a particular local search strategy -- multi-objective continuation methods -- by showing that the concept of $\epsilon$-dominance can be integrated into this approach in a suitable way.

Abstract

International audience; The architecture of Zn-Al layered double hydroxides (LDHs), organo-modified with bola-amphiphiles molecules, is matching its interlayer space to the size of narrow-band red-emitting InP/ZnS core–shell quantum dots (QDs) to form original high-performance functional organic–inorganic QD-bola-LDH hybrids. The success of size-matching interlayer space (SMIS) approach is confirmed by X-ray diffraction, small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), TEM, STEM-HAADF, and photoluminescence investigations. The QD-Bola-LDH hybrid exhibits a photoluminescence quantum yield three times higher than that of pristine InP/ZnS QDs and provides an easy dispersion into silicone-based resins, what makes the SMIS approach a change of paradigm compared to intercalation chemistry using common host structures. Moreover, this novel hybrid presents low QD–QD energy transfer comparable to that obtained for QDs in suspension. Composite silicone films incorporating InP/ZnS (0.27 wt%) QD-bola-LDH hybrids further show remarkable improved photostability relative to pristine QDs. An LED overlay consisting of a blue LED chip and silicone films loaded with QD-bola-LDH hybrids and YAG:Ce phosphors exhibits a color rendering index close to 94.

Abstract

The paper focuses on a generic optimal control problem (OCP) deriving from the competition between two microbial populations in continuous cultures. The competition for nutrients is reduced to a two-dimensional dynamical nonlinear-system that can be derived from classical quota models. We investigate an OCP that achieves species separation over a fixed time-window, suitable for a large class of empirical growth functions commonly used in quota models. Using Pontryagin’s Maximum Principle (PMP), the optimal control strategy steering the model trajectories is fully characterized. Then, we provide sufficient conditions for the existence of a turnpike property associated with the optimal control and state-trajectories, as well as their respective co-state trajectories. Indeed, we prove that for a sufficiently large time, the optimal strategy achieving strain separation remains most of the time exponentially close to an optimal steady-state defined from an associated simpler static-OCP. This turnpike feature is based on the hyperbolicity of the linearized Hamiltonian-system around the solution of the static-OCP. The obtained theoretical results are then illustrated on microalgae, described by the Droop model in dimension 5. The optimal strategy is numerically computed in Bocop (open source toolbox for optimal control) with direct optimization methods.

Abstract

International audience; The high-valent molybdenum(VI) N-heterocyclic carbene complexes, (NHC)MoO2 (1) and (NHC)MoO(N+Bu) (2) (NHC = 1,3-bis(3,5-di-tert-butyl-2-phenolato)-benzimidazol-2-ylidene), are investigated toward their catalytic potential in the deoxygenation of nitroarenes. Using pinacol as the sacrificial and green reductant, both complexes are shown to be very active (pre)catalysts for this transformation allowing a reduction of the catalyst loading down to 0.25 mol %. Mechanistic investigations show mu-oxo bridged molybdenum(V) complexes [(NHC)MoO](2)O (4) and [(NHC)Mo((NBu)-Bu-t)](2)O (5) as well as zwitterionic pinacolate benzimidazolium complex 6, with a doubly protonated NHC ligand, to be potentially active species in the catalytic cycle. Both 4 and 5 can be prepared independently by the deoxygenation of 1 and 2 using triethyl phosphine (PEt3) or triphenyl phosphine (PPh3) and were shown to exhibit an unusual multireferenced ground state with a very small singlet-triplet gap at room temperature. Computational studies show that the spin state plays an unneglectable role in the catalytic process, efficiently lowering the reaction barrier of the deoxygenation step. Mechanistic details, putting special emphasis on the fate of the catalyst will be presented and potential routes how nitroarene reduction is facilitated are evaluated.

Abstract

TC 3: Education; International audience; IFIP’s Technical Committee 3 (TC3) is dedicated to concerns about uses of computing and digital technologies in education. TC3 covers the interests of those who are concerned with policy, practice and research in the fields of digital technologies and computing used for educational purposes, whether for management, teaching or learning, and whether by teachers, learners, parents, policy makers, developers, or the wider adult population involved in lifelong learning. This chapter considers the shifting focus of IFIP TC3’s concerns for computing and education over the past 60 years, the reasons for those shifts, and the challenges that educators have faced in developing appropriate uses of computers in their practices. The chapter explores the roles and influences of TC3 conferences, its academic journal, its working groups, and its current task force. Separate sections provide an overview of important TC3 visions and declarations that have highlighted contemporary and future issues, and the status of an evolving declaration focusing on future sustainability and computing. The chapter concludes with an overview of the impact of TC3, and signposts next steps in its ongoing journey.

Abstract

Part 4: Poster and Demos; International audience; Mobile shopping apps have been using Augmented Reality (AR) in the last years to place their products in the environment of the customer. While this is possible with atomic 3D objects, there is still a lack in the runtime configuration of 3D object compositions based on user needs and environmental constraints. For this, we previously developed an approach for model-based AR-assisted product configuration based on the concept of Dynamic Software Product Lines. In this demonstration paper, we present the corresponding tool support ProConAR in the form of a Product Modeler and a Product Configurator. While the Product Modeler is an Angular web app that splits products (e.g. table) up into atomic parts (e.g. tabletop, table legs, funnier) and saves it within a configuration model, the Product Configurator is an Android client that uses the configuration model to place different product configurations within the environment of the customer. We show technical details of our ready to use tool-chain ProConAR by describing its implementation and usage as well as pointing out future research directions.

Abstract

Part 2: Model-Based and Model-Driven Approaches; International audience; Augmented Reality (AR) has recently found high attention in mobile shopping apps such as in domains like furniture or decoration. Here, the developers of the apps focus on the positioning of atomic 3D objects in the physical environment. With this focus, they neglect the configuration of multi-faceted 3D object composition according to the user needs and environmental constraints. To tackle these challenges, we present a model-based approach to support AR-assisted product configuration based on the concept of Dynamic Software Product Lines. Our approach splits products (e.g. table) into parts (e.g. tabletop, table legs, funnier) with their 3D objects and additional information (e.g. name, price). The possible products, which can be configured out of these parts, are stored in a feature model. At runtime, this feature model can be used to configure 3D object compositions out of the product parts and adapt to user needs and environmental constraints. The benefits of this approach are demonstrated by a case study of configuring modular kitchens with the help of a prototypical mobile-based implementation.

Abstract

This paper describes Asteroid, the PyTorch-based audio source separation toolkit for researchers. Inspired by the most successful neural source separation systems, it provides all neural building blocks required to build such a system. To improve reproducibility, Kaldi-style recipes on common audio source separation datasets are also provided. This paper describes the software architecture of Asteroid and its most important features. By showing experimental results obtained with Asteroid's recipes, we show that our implementations are at least on par with most results reported in reference papers. Abstract

International audience; The ever-growing complexity of systems, the growing number of stakeholders, and the corresponding continuous emergence of new domain-specific modeling abstractions has led to significantly higher cognitive load on modelers. There is an urgent need to provide modelers with better, more Intelligent Modeling Assistants (IMAs). An important factor to consider is the ability to assess and compare, to learn from existing and inform future IMAs, while potentially combining them. Recently, a conceptual Reference Framework for Intelligent Modeling Assistance (RF-IMA) was proposed. RF-IMA defines the main required components and high-level properties of IMAs. In this paper, we present a detailed, level-wise definition for the properties of RF-IMA to enable a better understanding, comparison, and selection of existing and future IMAs. The proposed levels are a first step towards a comprehensive assessment grid for intelligent modeling assistance. We identify different types of continuous, non-differentiable functions and show which types seem to be more accessible for the students than others. We use a study with sixteen students in an Analysis-II-course at a German university.

Abstract

International audience; Multi-Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) aims at modelling expert preferences and assisting decision makers in identifying options best accommodating expert criteria. An instance of MCDM model, the Choquet integral is widely used in real-world applications, due to its ability to capture interactions between criteria while retaining interpretability. Aimed at a better scalability and modularity, hierarchical Choquet integrals involve intermediate aggregations of the interacting criteria, at the cost of a more complex elicitation. The paper presents a machine learning-based approach for the automatic identification of hierarchical MCDM models, composed of 2-additive Choquet integral aggregators and of marginal utility functions on the raw features from data reflecting expert preferences. The proposed NEUR-HCI framework relies on a specific neural architecture, enforcing by design the Choquet model constraints and supporting its end-to-end training. The empirical validation of NEUR-HCI on real-world and artificial benchmarks demonstrates the merits of the approach compared to state-of-art baselines.

Abstract

Non-volatile memory (NVM), aka persistent memory, is a new paradigm for memory that preserves its contents even after power loss. The expected ubiquity of NVM has stimulated interest in the design of novel concepts ensuring correctness of concurrent programming abstractions in the face of persistency. So far, this has lead to the design of a number of persistent concurrent data structures, built to satisfy an associated notion of correctness: durable linearizability. In this paper, we transfer the principle of durable concurrent correctness to the area of software transactional memory (STM). Software transactional memory algorithms allow for concurrent access to shared state. Like linearizability for concurrent data structures, opacity is the established notion of correctness for STMs. First, we provide a novel definition of durable opacity extending opacity to handle crashes and recovery in the context of NVM. Second, we develop a durably opaque version of an existing STM algorithm, namely the Transactional Mutex Lock (TML). Third, we design a proof technique for durable opacity based on refinement between TML and an operational characterisation of durable opacity by adapting the TMS2 specification. Finally, we apply this proof technique to show that the durable version of TML is indeed durably opaque. Abstract

[EN] Modeling is requiring increasingly larger efforts while becoming indispensable given the complexity of the problems we are solving. Modelers face high cognitive load to understand a multitude of complex abstractions and their relationships. There is an urgent need to better support tool builders to ultimately provide modelers with intelligent modeling assistance that learns from previous modeling experiences, automatically derives modeling knowledge, and provides context-aware assistance. However, current intelligent modeling assistants (IMAs) lack adaptability and flexibility for tool builders, and do not facilitate understanding the differences and commonalities of IMAs for modelers. Such a patchwork of limited IMAs is a lost opportunity to provide modelers with better support for the creative and rigorous aspects of software engineering. In this expert voice, we present a conceptual reference framework (RF-IMA) and its properties to identify the foundations for intelligent modeling assistance. For tool builders, RF-IMA aims to help build IMAs more systematically. For modelers, RF-IMA aims to facilitate comprehension, comparison, and integration of IMAs, and ultimately to provide more intelligent support. We envision a momentum in the modeling community that leads to the implementation of RF-IMA and consequently future IMAs. We identify open challenges that need to be addressed to realize the opportunities provided by intelligent modeling assistance.

Abstract

The characterisation of loss in optical waveguides is essential in understanding the performance of these devices and their limitations. Whilst interferometric-based methods generally provide the best results for low-loss waveguides, they are almost exclusively used to provide characterization in cases where the waveguide is spatially single-mode. Here, we introduce a Fabry-P\'erot-based scheme to estimate the losses of a nonlinear (birefringent or quasi-phase matched) waveguide at a wavelength where it is multi-mode. The method involves measuring the generated second harmonic power as the pump wavelength is scanned over the phasematching region. Furthermore, it is shown that this method allows one to infer the losses of different second harmonic spatial modes by scanning the pump field over the separated phase matching spectra. By fitting the measured phasematching spectra from a titanium indiffused lithium niobate waveguide sample to the model presented in this paper, it is shown that one can estimate the second harmonic losses of a single spatial-mode, at wavelengths where the waveguides are spatially multi-mode., Comment: 14 pages, 6 figures

Abstract

Liquid crystalline materials possess great potential as emitters in organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) due to their self-assembling property, which may lead to anisotropic films and improved charge transport. Here, we investigate key photophysical properties of the columnar liquid crystalline emitter perylene-3,4,9,10-tetracarboxylic tetraethyl ester (PTCTE) and implement the material into OLEDs. We find that vacuum-deposited PTCTE films exhibit preferential horizontal orientation of the transition dipole moment. Embedding the emitter into different host materials leads to increased photoluminescence quantum yield but reduces molecular orientation compared to the neat film. OLEDs containing PTCTE doped into an exciplex-forming co-host achieve very high luminance exceeding 10,000 cd m-2 at 5.7 V, which is amongst the best performance of OLEDs based on columnar liquid crystalline emitters reported so far. Abstract

The problem of learning from imprecise data has recently attracted increasing attention, and various methods to tackle this problem have been proposed. In this paper, we discuss and compare two quite opposite approaches, an “optimistic” one that interprets imprecise data in a way that is most favourable for a candidate model, and a “pessimistic” one in which model choice is guided by the most unfavourable interpretation. To avoid an overly extreme behaviour, a modified version of the latter has recently been proposed, which we complement by an adjusted version of the optimistic approach. By presenting the various methods within a common (loss minimization) framework and discussing illustrative examples, we hope to provide some insight into important properties and differences, thereby paving the way for a more formal analysis.

Abstract

Various strategies for active learning have been proposed in the machine learning literature. In uncertainty sampling, which is among the most popular approaches, the active learner sequentially queries the label of those instances for which its current prediction is maximally uncertain. The predictions as well as the measures used to quantify the degree of uncertainty, such as entropy, are almost exclusively of a probabilistic nature. In this paper, we advocate a distinction between two different types of uncertainty, referred to as epistemic and aleatoric, in the context of active learning. Roughly speaking, these notions capture the reducible and the irreducible part of the total uncertainty in a prediction, respectively. We conjecture that, in uncertainty sampling, the usefulness of an instance is better reflected by its epistemic than by its aleatoric uncertainty. This leads us to suggest the principle of "epistemic uncertainty sampling", which we instantiate by means of a concrete approach for measuring epistemic and aleatoric uncertainty. Abstract

Soil organisms, including earthworms, are a key component of terrestrial ecosystems. However, little is known about their diversity, their distribution, and the threats affecting them. We compiled a global dataset of sampled earthworm communities from 6928 sites in 57 countries as a basis for predicting patterns in earthworm diversity, abundance, and biomass. We found that local species richness and abundance typically peaked at higher latitudes, displaying patterns opposite to those observed in aboveground organisms. However, high species dissimilarity across tropical locations may cause diversity across the entirety of the tropics to be higher than elsewhere. Climate variables were found to be more important in shaping earthworm communities than soil properties or habitat cover. For the invariant Dunkl-Poisson kernel $P^W(x,y)$, the estimates are $$ P^W(x,y)\asymp \frac{P^{{\bf R}^d}(x,y)}{\prod_{\alpha > 0 \ }|x-\sigma_\alpha y|^{2k(\alpha)}},$$ where the $\alpha$'s are the positive roots of a root system acting in ${\bf R}^d$, the $\sigma_\alpha$'s are the corresponding symmetries and $P^{{\bf R}^d}$ is the classical Poisson kernel in ${{\bf R}^d}$. Analogous bounds are proven for the Newton kernel when $d\ge 3$. The same estimates are derived in the rank one direct product case $\mathbb Z_2^N$ and conjectured for general $W$-invariant Dunkl processes. Part 8: Demonstrations and Installations; International audience; Adaptive User Interfaces (AUIs) have been promoted as a solution for context variability due to their ability to automatically adapt to the context-of-use at runtime. For the acceptance of AUIs, usability plays a crucial role. Classical usability evaluation methods like usability tests, interviews or cognitive walkthroughs are not sufficient for evaluating end-user satisfaction of AUIs at runtime. The main reason is that the UI and context-of-use are dynamically changing and acceptance of UI adaptation features has to be evaluated in the moment and context-of-use when the adaptations occur. To address this challenge, we present an on-the-fly usability evaluation solution that combines continuous context monitoring together with collection of instant user feedback to assess end-user satisfaction of UI adaptation features. We demonstrate the usefulness and benefit of our solution based on a mobile Android mail app, which served as basis for conducting a usability study.

Part 3: Workshop on Handling Security, Usability, User Experience and Reliability in User-Centered Development Processes; International audience; Augmented Reality (AR) is a technique that enables users to interact with their physical environment through the overlay of digital information. With the spread of AR applications in various domains (e.g. product design, manufacturing or maintenance) and the introduction of concepts such as Pervasive Augmented Reality (PAR), the aspect context-awareness started to play an important role. By sensing the user’s current context and adapting the AR application accordingly, an adequate user experience can be achieved. Due to the complex structure and composition of AR applications, their development is a challenging task. Although, context-awareness for AR systems was addressed to some extent, a systematic method for development of context-aware AR applications is not fully covered yet. Therefore, in this paper, we identify the main challenges for development of context-aware AR applications and sketch our solution idea for a model-based development framework. The benefit and applicability of our solution idea is shown on the basis of two example mobile AR applications supporting context-awareness.

International audience; Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) research has been focusing on properties such as usability, accessibility, inclusive design, user experience. As new security risks are emerging with the continuous increase of Internet interconnections and the development of the Internet of Things, more recently security, trust and resilience have also become important for the development of interactive systems. Since users have been identified as one of the major security weaknesses in today’s technologies, HCI becomes a fundamental pillar for designing more secure (but still usable) systems. However, interactive system properties might overlap and sometimes create conflicts in user-centered development processes. For example, security could reduce system usability by placing a burden on users when they have to deal with passwords. The HCI research has provided several tools and techniques that can support designers in making decisions, but there are no “cookbooks”. This workshop promotes sharing of experiences in managing and resolving conflicts of multiple interactive system properties within the context of a user-centered design process. We are concerned by theories, methods and approaches for dealing with interactive system properties, managing potential conflicts and trade-offs. This workshop is organized by the IFIP WG 13.2 on Methodology for User-Centered System Design and the IFIP WG 13.5 on Human Error, Resilience, Reliability and Safety in System Development.

International audience; The research presented in this paper is about the question, if and how the phrasing of a proving task influences students’ proof productions. In our study, 381 first-year preservice teachers were asked to work on a proof questionnaire involving two proving tasks, where the phrasings “prove that”, “show that”, “reason”, and “explain” were used alternatively. Students’ proof productions were analyzed concerning the kind of reasoning, the use of algebraic variables and the number of words used. While we found statistically significant differences in the proof productions for the easier first task, there were no remarkable differences in the case of the harder second task.

International audience; Recent approaches to statistics education situate the teaching and learning of statistics within cycles of statistical inquiry. This research focuses on the first step – the preparation of prospective teachers to pose statistical questions. We report on an investigation of prospective elementary teachers in Ireland (n=118) and Germany (n=40) as they design statistical questions. Support was provided through tutorials, think-pair activities, peer-feedback and expert-feedback. We describe the features of statistical questions posed, identify obstacles and difficulties experienced when posing questions and evaluate the effectiveness of both peer and expert feedback.

International audience; Many university freshmen have difficulties in first year mathematics courses due to inappropriate study skills and learning strategies. In large mathematics service courses the effect of poor study skills is even worse because individual support is hardly possible. Past research shows that it is not sufficient to introduce new study skills because students often do not use these; they need first to be supported when working with them. In this paper we describe one possible support with a coaching program for a tool that aims to assist students in learning mathematical concepts. We describe the aims, the design, and the implementation of the coaching program supporting the students’ work with the tool provided, as well as some evaluation results concerning reported students’ benefit from the program, their attitudes towards the tool, and the frequency of use of the tool at the end of the coaching.

International audience; Recent changes in German national standards and curricula have made statistics including digital tools an inherent part of the final examination at upper secondary schools. In previous years, many teachers focused only on mandatory content like algebra or analysis and almost completely avoided optional stochastic content. Thus they are now facing the challenge to create and implement lessons for a topic in which they are inexperienced and feel insecure. The professional development course presented in this study has the aim to increase teachers’ knowledge and competence in statistics, including the use of digital tools like graphic calculators and GeoGebra. A newly developed questionnaire was used to assess teachers’ development during the course and led to preliminary findings concerning the knowledge and competence for advanced topics of inference statistics and the expertise of using digital tools in this field.

International audience; VEMINT (Virtual Entrance Tutorial for the STEM subjects), a joint project by researchers from the universities of Darmstadt, Kassel, Paderborn and Hannover, has worked on material and course-designs for bridging courses for more than 15 years. In recent years, VEMINT has focused on the development of a psychometrically validated test to provide students with appropriate hints for the use of material and to evaluate the impact of teaching and learning activities. In this paper, we present elements of the test, which are based on ideas from Feldt-Caesar (2017), who combined cognitive activity and action control theoretical approaches in the development of a three-dimensional competence structure model, and on Anthropological Theory of Didactics, to explain content-related differences between dimensions of the model. Validating Rasch-analyses show that, in accordance with the design ideas, a three-dimensional Rasch-model fits with empirical data.

International audience; Drawing statistical inference with the help of simulations has gained prominence in statistics education as well as introducing statistical inference with randomization tests. This paper describes some selected results of a case study of preservice primary teachers who attended a short learning trajectory on statistical inference with randomization tests. It will be shown how the participants address the context, statistics and software level when conducting a randomization test with software and how the conscious linking of the three levels can support the learning process and help to understand certain elements of a randomization test.

International audience; We propose a method for reliable prediction in multi-class classification, where reliability refers to the possibility of partial abstention in cases of uncertainty. More specifically, we allow for predictions in the form of preorder relations on the set of classes, thereby generalizing the idea of set-valued predictions. Our approach relies on combining learning by pairwise comparison with a recent proposal for modeling uncertainty in classification, in which a distinction is made between reducible (a.k.a. epistemic) uncertainty caused by a lack of information and irreducible (a.k.a. aleatoric) uncertainty due to intrinsic randomness. The problem of combining uncertain pairwise predictions into a most plausible preorder is then formalized as an integer programming problem. Experimentally, we show that our method is able to appropriately balance reliability and precision of predictions.

International audience; The transition from high school to university mathematics has proven to be difficult for many students but especially for pre-service secondary teachers. To support these students at mastering this transition, various universities have introduced support measures of various kinds. The WiGeMath project developed a taxonomy that makes it possible to describe and compare these measures concerning their goals as well as their frame characteristics. We will exemplify the use of the taxonomy in the description of one specific innovative measure that was part of the WiGeMath evaluations. Moreover, we will present first results concerning the goal-fulfilment of this measure concerning affective characteristics of the student cohort and their predominant beliefs.

International audience; The goal of the study presented in this paper is the investigation of students' problems with exercises concerning central topics of linear algebra courses at university level. We present the results of our analysis of students' work on an exercise about subspaces of . We evaluated the written solutions of the task as well as transcripts based on videos taken of student groups working on the problem. We identified and classified descriptions of vector spaces and subspaces that varied widely and demonstrated highly different skills in working with geometric or formal algebraic objects. We analyzed how far students could progress in a complex reasoning process, and identified those steps in the reasoning process on which students needed support to continue.

International audience; This chapter summarizes and discusses the state of the art of research on mathematics textbooks and other resources and their use as depicted in this volume. The discussion focuses on three questions: First, what are the theoretical and methodological tools used in order to conceptualize and investigate textbook and resource use? Second, what can we learn about the use of textbooks and resources by teachers from the chapters in this volume? Third, what do we learn from comparing teachers-resources interactions across different countries? Based on the discussion, conclusions are drawn regarding perspectives of future research on mathematics textbooks and resources and their use.

International audience; This book focuses on issues related to mathematics teaching and learning resources, including mathematics textbooks, teacher guides, student learning and assessment materials, and online resources. The book highlights various theoretical and methodological approaches used to study teaching and learning resources, and addresses the areas of resources, teachers, and students at an international level. As for the resources, the book examines the role textbooks and other curricular or learning resources play in mathematics teaching, learning, and assessment. It asks questions such as: Could we consider different types of textbooks and roles they play in teaching and learning? How does the digitalization of information and communication affect these roles? What are defining features of e-textbooks, and how could we characterize the differences between the traditional textbooks and e-textbooks? As for the teachers, the book discusses the relationships between teachers’ individual and collective resources, and the way in which we could model such relationships. Specific questions addressed are: What is the role of teachers in developing textbooks and other teaching and learning materials? What are the relationships between resource designers and users? What are the consequences of these changing roles and relationships for the teaching of mathematics, and for teacher knowledge and professional development? As for the students, the book explores how students, as well as their teachers, interact through resources. It raises and addresses questions such as: What are the effects of modern ICT (particularly internet) on students’ use and the design of resources? How do changing patterns of use and design affect student behaviour, learning, and relationships to the subject of mathematics?

Abstract

International audience; The effect of the support material and chemical state of Rh in Rh/A(2)O(3) and Rh/SiO2 model catalysts during CO2 hydrogenation were studied by a combined array of in situ characterisation techniques including diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray absorption spectroscopy and high-energy X-ray diffraction at 250-350 degrees C and atmospheric pressure. CO2 methanation proceeds via intermediate formation of adsorbed CO species on metallic Rh, likely followed by their hydrogenation to methane. The linearly-bonded CO species is suggested to be a more active precursor in the hydrogenation compared to the bridge-bonded species, which seems to be related to particle size effects: for larger particles mainly the formation of inactive bridge-bonded CO species takes place. Further, analysis of the chemical state of Rh under the reaction conditions reveal a minor formation of RhOx from dissociation of CO2, which is a consequence of the increased activity observed over the Rh/Al2O3 catalyst.

Abstract

We study actions of Lie supergroups, in particular, the hitherto elusive notion of orbits through odd (or more general) points. Following categorical principles, we derive a conceptual framework for their treatment and therein prove general existence theorems for the isotropy (or stabiliser) supergroups and orbits through general points. In this setting, we show that the coadjoint orbits always admit a (relative) supersymplectic structure of Kirillov-Kostant-Souriau type. Applying a family version of Kirillov's orbit method, we decompose the regular representation of an odd Abelian supergroup into an odd direct integral of characters and construct universal families of representations, parametrised by a supermanifold, for two different super variants of the Heisenberg group., Comment: 47 pages; v3: final version, accepted for publication in J. Abstract

International audience; The structural dynamics of charge-transfer states of nitrogen-ligated copper complexes has been extensively investigated in recent years following the development of pump-probe X-ray techniques. In this study we extend this approach towards copper complexes with sulfur coordination and investigate the influence of charge transfer states on the structure of a dicopper(I) complex with coordination by bridging disulfide ligands and additionally tetramethylguanidine units [CuI2(NSSN)(2)](2+). In order to directly observe and refine the photoinduced structural changes in the solvated complex we applied picosecond pump-probe X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and wide-angle X-ray scattering (WAXS). Additionally, the ultrafast evolution of the electronic excited states was monitored by femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy in the UV-Vis probe range. DFT calculations were used to predict molecular geometries and electronic structures of the ground and metal-to-ligand charge transfer states with singlet and triplet spin multiplicities, i.e. S-0, (MLCT)-M-1 and (MLCT)-M-3, respectively. Combining these techniques we elucidate the electronic and structural dynamics of the solvated complex upon photoexcitation to the MLCT states. In particular, femtosecond optical transient spectroscopy reveals three distinct timescales of 650 fs, 10 ps and 4100 ps, which were assigned as internal conversion to the ground state (Sn -> S-0), intersystem crossing (MLCT)-M-1 -> (MLCT)-M-3, and subsequent relaxation of the triplet to the ground state, respectively. Experimental data collected using both X-ray techniques are in agreement with the DFT-predicted structure for the triplet state, where coordination bond lengths change and one of the S-S bridges is cleaved, causing the movement of two halves of the molecule relative to each other. Extended X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy resolves changes in Cu-ligand bond lengths with precision on the order of 0.01 angstrom, whereas WAXS is sensitive to changes in the global shape related to relative movement of parts of the molecule. The results presented herein widen the knowledge on the electronic and structural dynamics of photoexcited copper-sulfur complexes and demonstrate the potential of combining the pump-probe X-ray absorption and scattering for studies on photoinduced structural dynamics in copper-based coordination complexes.

Abstract

Quantum ESPRESSO is an integrated suite of open-source computer codes for quantum simulations of materials using state-of-the art electronic-structure techniques, based on density-functional theory, density-functional perturbation theory, and many-body perturbation theory, within the plane-wave pseudo-potential and projector-augmented-wave approaches. Quantum ESPRESSO owes its popularity to the wide variety of properties and processes it allows to simulate, to its performance on an increasingly broad array of hardware architectures, and to a community of researchers that rely on its capabilities as a core open-source development platform to implement theirs ideas.
