In this work, we study a local adaptive smoothing algorithm for a-posteriori-steered p-robust multigrid methods. The solver tackles a linear system which is generated by the discretization of a second-order elliptic diffusion problem using conforming finite elements of polynomial order p ≥ 1 {p\geq 1} . After one V-cycle (“full-smoothing” substep) of the solver of [A. Miraçi, J. Papež, and M. Vohralík, A-posteriori-steered p-robust multigrid with optimal step-sizes and adaptive number of smoothing steps, SIAM J. Sci. Comput. 2021, 10.1137/20M1349503], we dispose of a reliable, efficient, and localized estimation of the algebraic error. We use this existing result to develop our new adaptive algorithm: thanks to the information of the estimator and based on a bulk-chasing criterion, cf. [W. Dörfler, A convergent adaptive algorithm for Poisson’s equation, SIAM J. Numer. Anal. 33 1996, 3, 1106–1124], we mark patches of elements with increased estimated error on all levels. Then, we proceed by a modified and cheaper V-cycle (“adaptive-smoothing” substep), which only applies smoothing in the marked regions. The proposed adaptive multigrid solver picks autonomously and adaptively the optimal step-size per level as in our previous work but also the type of smoothing per level (weighted restricted additive or additive Schwarz) and concentrates smoothing to marked regions with high error. We prove that, under a numerical condition that we verify in the algorithm, each substep (full and adaptive) contracts the error p-robustly, which is confirmed by numerical experiments. Moreover, the proposed algorithm behaves numerically robustly with respect to the number of levels as well as to the diffusion coefficient jump for a uniformly-refined hierarchy of meshes.

In this thesis, we consider systems of linear algebraic equations arising from discretizations of second-order elliptic partial differential equations using finite elements of arbitrary polynomial degree.In Chapter 1, we propose an a posteriori estimator for the algebraic error whose construction is inherently interconnected with the design of a multigrid solver with zero pre- and only one post-smoothing step by overlapping Schwarz (block-Jacobi) methods. The main contribution of this approach consists in the two following results and their equivalence: the solver contracts the algebraic error independently of the polynomial degree ($p$-robustness); the estimator represents a two-sided $p$-robust bound on the algebraic error. The proofs of these results hold in one, two, and three space dimensions, under the minimal $H^1$-regularity of the weak solution, for quasi-uniform meshes as well as for possibly highly graded ones, and are independent of the basis of the chosen finite element space. We introduce here an optimal step-size (by line search) in the error correction stage of the multigrid.In Chapter 2, we introduce level-wise optimal step-sizes, thus maximizing the decrease of the algebraic error on each level. Under the $H^2$-regularity assumption, we prove here that the $p$-robust contraction/efficiency also hold independently of the number of mesh levels. Apart from improving the performance of the solver, the use of the level-wise step-sizes also leads to an explicit Pythagorean formula of the decrease of the algebraic error from one iteration to the next. The formula then serves as foundation of a simple and effective adaptive strategy which allows the solver to choose the necessary number of post-smoothing steps on each level.In Chapter 3, we introduce an adaptive local smoothing strategy thanks to our efficient a posteriori estimator, which has the important property of being localized level-wise and patch-wise. Thus, the estimator can detect and mark which patches of elements among all mesh levels contribute more than a user prescribed percentage to the global algebraic error (via a bulk-chasing criterion). Each iteration of the adaptive solver is here composed of two sub-steps: after a first non-adaptive V-cycle, a second adaptive and inexpensive V-cycle employs local smoothing only in the marked patches. We prove that each of these sub-steps contracts the algebraic error $p$-robustly.Finally, in Chapter 4, we provide an extension of the above results to the case of the mixed finite element method discretization in two space dimensions.A variety of numerical tests is presented to confirm the theoretical findings of this thesis, as well as to show the benefits of our $p$-robust and/or adaptive solver approaches.; Dans cette thèse, nous considérons des systèmes d’équations algébriques linéaires provenant de discrétisation d’équations aux dérivées partielles elliptiques de second ordre par des éléments finis de degré polynomial arbitraire.Dans le Chapitre 1 nous proposons un estimateur a posteriori pour l’erreur algébrique, la construction duquel est intrinsèquement liée à celle d’un solveur multigrille avec zéro pas de pré-lissage et seulement un pas de post-lissage par des méthodes de Schwarz (bloc-Jacobi) avec recouvrement. En plus de l’amélioration des performances du solveur, l’utilisation des pas optimaux par niveau conduit également à une formule de Pythagore explicite de la réduction de l’erreur algébrique d’une itération à l’autre. La formule sert alors de fondement pour une stratégie adaptative simple et efficace qui permet au solveur de choisir le nombre nécessaire de pas de post-lissage à chaque niveau.Dans le Chapitre 3 nous introduisons une stratégie de lissage local adaptatif grâce à notre estimateur efficace a posteriori, qui a la propriété importante d’être localisé par niveaux et par patchs d’éléments. Ainsi, l’estimateur peut détecter et marquer quels patchs d’éléments parmi tous les niveaux contribuent plus qu’un pourcentage prescrit par l’utilisateur de l’erreur algébrique globale (via un critère de type bulk-chasing). Chaque itération du solveur adaptatif est ici composée de deux sous-étapes: après un premier V-cycle non adaptatif, un deuxième V-cycle adaptatif et peu coûteux n’utilise le lissage local que dans les patchs marqués. Nous prouvons que chacune de ces sous-étapes contracte l’erreur algébrique de manière $p$-robuste.Pour terminer, dans le Chapitre 4 nous donnons des extensions des résultats ci-dessus au cadre d’éléments finis mixtes en deux dimensions d’espace.Une variété de tests numériques est présentée pour confirmer les résultats théoriques de cette thèse, ainsi que pour montrer les avantages de nos approches $p$-robustes et/ou d’adaptivité de solveurs algébriques.

International audience; When simulating complex physical phenomena such as aircraft icing or de-icing, several dedicated solvers often need to be strongly coupled. In this work, a non-overlapping Schwarz method is constructed with the unsteady simulation of de-icing as the targetted application. To do so, optimized coupling coefficients are first derived for the one dimensional unsteady heat equation with linear boundary conditions and for the steady heat equation with non-linear boundary conditions. The choice of these coefficients is shown to guarantee the convergence of the method. Using a linearization of the boundary conditions, the method is then extended to the case of a general unsteady heat conduction problem. The method is tested on simple cases and the convergence properties are assessed theoretically and numerically. Finally the method is applied to the simulation of an aircraft electrothermal de-icing problem in two dimensions.

International audience; In isogeometric analysis (IGA) the domain of interest is usually represented by B-spline or NURBS patches, as they are present in standard CAD models. Complex domains can often be represented as a union of simple overlapping subdomains, parameterized by (tensor-product) spline patches. Numerical simulation on such overlapping multi-patch domains is a serious challenge in IGA. To obtain non-overlapping subdomains one would usually reparameterize the domain or trim some of the patches. Alternatively, one may use methods that can handle overlapping subdomains. In this paper, we propose a non-iterative, robust and efficient method defined directly on overlapping multi-patch domains. Consequently, the problem is divided into several sub-problems, which are coupled in an appropriate way. The resulting system can be solved directly in a single step. We compare the proposed method with iterative Schwarz domain decomposition approaches and observe that our method reduces the computational cost significantly, especially when handling subdomains with small overlaps. Summing up, our method significantly simplifies the domain parameterization problem, since we can represent any domain of interest as a union of overlapping patches without the need to introduce trimming curves/surfaces. The performance of the proposed method is demonstrated by several numerical experiments for the Poisson problem and linear elasticity in two and three dimensions.

International audience; We propose a Schwarz-based domain decomposition method for solving a dispersion equation consisting on the linearized KdV equation without the advective term, using simple interface operators based on the exact transparent boundary conditions for this equation. An optimization process is performed for obtaining the approximation that provides the method with the fastest convergence to the solution of the monodomain problem.

International audience; In this paper, we analyze the convergence of the Schwarz method for contact problems with Tresca friction formulated in stress variables. In this dual variable, the problem is written as a variational inequality in the space $H_\text{div}(\Omega)$, $\Omega$ being the domain of the problem. The method is introduced as a subspace correction algorithm. In this case, the global convergence and the error estimation of the method are already proved in the literature under some assumptions. However, the checking of these hypotheses in the space $H_\text{div}(\Omega)$ cannot be proved easily, as for the space $H^1(\Omega)$. The main result of this paper is to prove that these hypotheses are verified for this particular variational inequality. As in the case of the classical problems formulated in primal variables, the error estimate we obtain depends on the overlapping parameter of the domain decomposition.

Progress has been performed for decades, in terms of physical knowledge, numerical techniques and computer power, that allows to address more and more complex simulations. Modelling of river and marine flows is no exception to this rule. For many applications, engineers have now to implement complex "modelling systems", coupling several models and software, representing various parts of the physical system. Such modelling systems allow addressing numerous studies, like quantifying the impacts of industrial constructions or highway structures, or evaluating the consequences of an extreme event.In the framwork of the present thesis, we address model coupling techniques using Schwarz's methodology, which is based on domain decomposition methods. The basic principle is to reduce the resolution of a complex problem into several simpler sub-problems, thanks to an iterative algorithm. These methods are particularly well suited for industrial codes, since they are very few intrusive.This thesis was realized within the framework of a CIFRE contract and thanks to the funding of the European CRISMA project and was thus greatly influenced by this industrial context. It was performed within the Artelia company, in collaboration with the AIRSEA team of the Jean Kuntzmann Laboratory, with the main objective of transferring to Artelia some knowledge and expertise regarding coupling methodologies.In this thesis, we develop a methodology for multi-model coupling with heterogeneous dimensions, based on Schwarz's methods, in order to allow modelling of complex problems in operational cases. From the industrial viewpoint, the developed coupled models must use software meeting Artelia's needs (Telemac-3D, Mascaret, InterFOAM, Open-PALM).We firstly study a testcase coupling 1-D and 3-D free surface flows, using the same software system Telemac-Mascaret. The advantage of such coupling is a reduction of the computation cost, thanks to the use of a 1-D model. However the change in the model dimension makes it difficult to define properly the notion of coupling, leading to a coupled solution which is not defined in a unique way but depends on the choice of the interface operators.Then we study a coupling case between a monophasic model and a diphasic model (1-D/3-D and 3-D/3-D), using Telemac-Mascaret and InterFOAM software systems. Once again, the main difficulty lies in the definition of interfaces operators, due to the change in the physics (monophasic / diphasic). Such a coupling makes it possible to solve complex flows that the Telemac-Mascaret system alone cannot address (breaking waves, water blade, closed-conduit flow, etc.), by locally using InterFOAM where necessary (InterFOAM is very expensive in terms of computations). Finally, we implement such a monophasic/diphasic coupling on an operational engineering study.In addition, we also present the work done during the CRISMA project. The overall objective of the CRISMA project was to develop a simulation-based decision support system for the operational crisis management in different domains of natural or industrial risks (floods, forest fires, accidental pollution, etc.). In this context, Artelia coordinated the development of an application allowing to simulate various aspects of crisis linked to flood risks in Charente-Maritime.; Les progrès réalisés depuis plusieurs décennies, à la fois en termes de connaissances physiques, numériques et de puissance informatique disponible, permettent de traiter des simulations de plus en plus complexes. Les modélisations d'écoulements fluviaux et maritimes n'échappent pas à cette tendance. Ainsi, pour de très nombreuses applications de ce type, les modélisateurs doivent mettre en œuvre de véritables "systèmes de modélisation", couplant entre eux plusieurs modèles et logiciels, représentant différentes parties du système physique. La mise en place de tels systèmes permet de traiter de nombreuses études, comme par exemple les impacts de construction d'ouvrages d'art ou industriels, ou encore l'évaluation des aléas suite à un événement exceptionnel, etc.Dans le cadre de cette thèse, nous abordons cette problématique en utilisant une méthodologie de type Schwarz, empruntée à la théorie de décomposition de domaine, dont le principe est de ramener la résolution d'un problème complexe à celle de plusieurs sous-problèmes plus simples, grâce à un algorithme itératif. Ces méthodologies sont particulièrement bien adaptées au couplage de codes industriels puisqu'elles sont très peu intrusives.Cette thèse, réalisée dans le cadre d'un contrat CIFRE et grâce au financement du projet européen CRISMA, a été fortement ancrée dans un contexte industriel. Elle a été réalisée au sein d'Artelia en collaboration avec l'équipe AIRSEA du Laboratoire Jean Kuntzmann, avec pour objectif principal de transférer vers Artelia des connaissances et du savoir-faire concernant les méthodologies de couplage de modèles.Nous développons, dans le cadre de cette thèse, une méthodologie de couplage multi-modèles et de dimensions hétérogènes basée sur les méthodes de Schwarz, afin de permettre la modélisation de problématiques complexes dans des cas opérationnels (en complexifiant les problématiques étudiées au fur et à mesure de la thèse). Du point de vue industriel, les couplages mis en place sont fortement contraints par les logiciels utilisés répondant aux besoins d'Artelia (Telemac-3D, Mascaret, InterFOAM, Open-PALM).Nous étudions tout d'abord un couplage 1-D/3-D résolvant des écoulements à surface libre sous un même système de logiciel Telemac-Mascaret. L'avantage d'un tel couplage est une réduction de coût grâce à l'utilisation du modèle 1-D. Toutefois l’une des difficultés liées au changement de dimension réside dans la définition même de la notion de couplage entre des modèles de dimensions différentes. Ceci conduit à une solution couplée qui n’est pas définie d’une façon unique et qui dépend du choix des opérateurs d’interfaces.Puis nous nous intéressons au couplage monophasique/diphasique (1-D/3-D et 3-D/3-D) entre le système de logiciel Telemac-Mascaret et InterFOAM (modèle diphasique VOF), où la difficulté du choix des opérateurs d'interface lors du changement de physique (monophasique/diphasique) est aussi présente. Ce couplage a pour avantage de rendre possible la résolution d’écoulements complexes, que le système Telemac-Mascaret ne peut pas simuler (déferlement, lame d'eau, écoulement en charge, etc.) en utilisant localement InterFOAM avec son coût de calcul très important. Enfin, nous étudions l’application du couplage monophasique/diphasique sur un cas opérationnel d’étude d’ingénierie.Par ailleurs, les travaux effectués lors du projet CRISMA, pour le développement d'une application permettant de simuler les différents aspects d'une crise liée aux risques de submersions marines en Charente Maritime, coordonnés par Artelia, sont également présentés. Le projet CRISMA a pour objectif d'améliorer l'aide à la décision en se basant sur la simulation pour la gestion opérationnelle des situations de crise dans différents domaines du risque naturel et industriel (inondations, feux de forêt, pollutions accidentelles, etc.).

Ainsi, pour de très nombreuses applications de ce type, les modélisateurs doivent mettre en œuvre de véritables "systèmes de modélisation", couplant entre eux plusieurs modèles et logiciels, représentant différentes parties du système physique. La mise en place de tels systèmes permet de traiter de nombreuses études, comme par exemple les impacts de construction d'ouvrages d'art ou industriels, ou encore l'évaluation des aléas suite à un événement exceptionnel, etc.Dans le cadre de cette thèse, nous abordons cette problématique en utilisant une méthodologie de type Schwarz, empruntée à la théorie de décomposition de domaine, dont le principe est de ramener la résolution d'un problème complexe à celle de plusieurs sous-problèmes plus simples, grâce à un algorithme itératif. Ces méthodologies sont particulièrement bien adaptées au couplage de codes industriels puisqu'elles sont très peu intrusives.Cette thèse, réalisée dans le cadre d'un contrat CIFRE et grâce au financement du projet européen CRISMA, a été fortement ancrée dans un contexte industriel. Elle a été réalisée au sein d'Artelia en collaboration avec l'équipe AIRSEA du Laboratoire Jean Kuntzmann, avec pour objectif principal de transférer vers Artelia des connaissances et du savoir-faire concernant les méthodologies de couplage de modèles.Nous développons, dans le cadre de cette thèse, une méthodologie de couplage multi-modèles et de dimensions hétérogènes basée sur les méthodes de Schwarz, afin de permettre la modélisation de problématiques complexes dans des cas opérationnels (en complexifiant les problématiques étudiées au fur et à mesure de la thèse). Du point de vue industriel, les couplages mis en place sont fortement contraints par les logiciels utilisés répondant aux besoins d'Artelia (Telemac-3D, Mascaret, InterFOAM, Open-PALM).Nous étudions tout d'abord un couplage 1-D/3-D résolvant des écoulements à surface libre sous un même système de logiciel Telemac-Mascaret. L'avantage d'un tel couplage est une réduction de coût grâce à l'utilisation du modèle 1-D. Toutefois l’une des difficultés liées au changement de dimension réside dans la définition même de la notion de couplage entre des modèles de dimensions différentes. Ceci conduit à une solution couplée qui n’est pas définie d’une façon unique et qui dépend du choix des opérateurs d’interfaces.Puis nous nous intéressons au couplage monophasique/diphasique (1-D/3-D et 3-D/3-D) entre le système de logiciel Telemac-Mascaret et InterFOAM (modèle diphasique VOF), où la difficulté du choix des opérateurs d'interface lors du changement de physique (monophasique/diphasique) est aussi présente. Ce couplage a pour avantage de rendre possible la résolution d’écoulements complexes, que le système Telemac-Mascaret ne peut pas simuler (déferlement, lame d'eau, écoulement en charge, etc.) en utilisant localement InterFOAM avec son coût de calcul très important. Enfin, nous étudions l’application du couplage monophasique/diphasique sur un cas opérationnel d’étude d’ingénierie.Par ailleurs, les travaux effectués lors du projet CRISMA, pour le développement d'une application permettant de simuler les différents aspects d'une crise liée aux risques de submersions marines en Charente Maritime, coordonnés par Artelia, sont également présentés. Le projet CRISMA a pour objectif d'améliorer l'aide à la décision en se basant sur la simulation pour la gestion opérationnelle des situations de crise dans différents domaines du risque naturel et industriel (inondations, feux de forêt, pollutions accidentelles, etc.).

Icing has been identified as a serious issue since the start of aeronautics. Ice accretion on wings, due to supercooled droplets inside clouds, leads to severe degradation of aerodynamic performances, among other undesirable effects. Therefore, aircraft manufacturers have since a long time developed ice protection systems. As flight tests or wind tunnel experiments are often complicated to implement and expensive, numerical modeling is an effective and complementary tool to design those systems.This thesis concerns the modeling of ice accretion, runback and thermal ice protection systems. It consists of seven chapters. The first one is dedicated to the presentation of the concerns and the context. Then a three layer approach allowing to model in an unsteady way ice accretion and runback is presented. Following three chapters deal with this model discretization as well as a method to couple it with a thermal ice protection system model. Two last chapters are dedicated to numerical simulations showing the sake of the approach and the feasibility of a whole simulation of ice accretion on a heated or unheated surface., Le givrage a été identifié comme un danger important dès le début de l'aéronautique. L'accrétion de givre sur les ailes d'avion, due à la présence de gouttelettes surfondues dans les nuages, cause parmi d'autres conséquences néfastes une dégradation des performances aérodynamiques pouvant conduire au décrochage. C'est pourquoi les avionneurs développent depuis longtemps des systèmes de protection. Comme les essais en vols ou en soufflerie sont souvent complexes à mettre en œuvre et onéreux, la simulation numérique est devenue un outil efficace et complémentaire pour dimensionner ces systèmes. Cette thèse s'inscrit dans le contexte de la modélisation de l'accrétion de givre, du ruissellement et des systèmes de protection thermique. Elle s'articule en sept chapitres. Après avoir présenté les enjeux et contexte, on introduit une approche tri-couche permettant de modéliser l'accrétion de givre et le ruissellement de manière instationnaire. Les trois chapitres suivants traitent des méthodes de discrétisation de ce modèle ainsi que de son couplage avec un modèle du système de protection thermique. Les deux derniers sont consacrés à la présentation des résultats de simulations numériques montrant l'intérêt de l'approche développée et la faisabilité de simulations complètes de phénomènes d'accrétion de givre sur une paroi chauffée ou non.

International audience; This paper deals with the mathematical analysis and the subspace approximation of a system of variational inequalities representing a unified approach to several quasistatic contact problems in elasticity. Using an implicit time discretization scheme and some estimates, convergence properties of the incremental solutions and existence results are presented for a class of abstract implicit evolution variational inequalities involving a nonlinear operator. To solve the corresponding semi-discrete and the fully discrete problems, some general subspace correction algorithms are proposed, for which global convergence is analyzed and error estimates are established.
