OBJETIVO: Analisar a efetividade de programas de prevenção de injúrias intencionais e não intencionais, em crianças e adolescentes, embasados nos princípios da comunidade segura. FONTES DE DADOS: Pesquisa eletrônica nas bases de dados MEDLINE e LILACS, correspondendo ao período de 2000 a 2005. Para prevenção de injúrias não intencionais, usaram-se os descritores: injury and prevention and community or population and intervention; para prevenção de injúrias intencionais, violence and prevention and community or population and intervention; foi tomada como limite a faixa etária de 0 a 18 anos. Critérios de inclusão: artigos originais, que estudaram a efetividade de intervenções utilizando mais de uma estratégia e abrangendo toda uma comunidade ou grupo, abordando injúrias intencionais e não intencionais, publicados em português, inglês ou espanhol. SÍNTESE DOS DADOS: Foram obtidos 152 estudos como resultado. Considerando os critérios de inclusão, foram encontrados cinco artigos sobre prevenção de injúrias não intencionais, um sobre prevenção de injúrias intencionais e um artigo que aborda as duas questões. As pesquisas analisadas evidenciam benefícios para crianças e adolescentes, em diferentes proporções. CONCLUSÕES: Os programas que trabalham com o conceito de comunidade segura ainda são em número restrito. As investigações analisadas neste estudo apresentam resultados positivos. É preciso aumentar esforços para o desenvolvimento dessa base de evidência, respeitando as características locais, desenvolvendo indicadores de avaliação que permitam melhor comparação entre diferentes trabalhos.ABSTRACT OBJECTIVE:To analyze the effectiveness of prevention programs for intentional and unintentional injuries, based on safe community principles, in children and adolescents. SOURCES OF DATA: An electronic search was performed in the MEDLINE and LILACS database, corresponding to the period from 2000 to 2005. For prevention of unintentional injuries, we used the following keywords: injury and prevention and community or population and intervention. For prevention of intentional injuries, we used the following keywords: violence and prevention and community or population and intervention; the age range from zero to 18 years was used as a threshold. The inclusion criteria were: original articles which evaluated the effectiveness of interventions using more than one strategy, involving a whole community or group, published in Portuguese, English or Spanish. SUMMARY OF THE FINDINGS: 152 studies were obtained as a result. Considering the inclusion criteria, five articles were found on unintentional injury prevention, one about intentional injury prevention and one paper addressing these two issues. All studies analyzed demonstrate benefits to children and adolescents, but in different proportions. CONCLUSIONS: A restricted number of programs using the safe community concept were found. The investigations analyzed in this study presented positive results. Increased efforts to further develop this evidence are still needed, respecting local characteristics, and developing evaluation indicators that allow for a better comparison between different studies.

Although research on hearing loss, including the identification of causative genes, has become increasingly active, the pathogenic mechanism of hearing loss remains unclear. One of the reasons for this is that the structure of the inner ear of mice, which is commonly used as a genetically modified animal model, is too small and complex, making it difficult to accurately capture abnormalities and dynamic changes in vivo. Especially, Reissner's membrane is a very important structure that separates the perilymph and endolymph of the inner ear. This malformation or damage induces abnormalities in hearing and balance. Until now, imaging analyses, such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography, are performed to investigate the inner ear structure in vivo; however, it has been difficult to analyze the small inner ear structure of mice owing to resolution. Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop an image analysis method that can accurately capture the structure of the inner ear of mice including Reissner's membrane, both dynamically and statically. This study aimed to investigate whether it is possible to accurately capture the structure (e.g., Reissner's membrane) and abnormalities of the inner ear of mice using an 11.7 T MRI. By combining two types of MRI methods, in vivo and ex vivo, we succeeded for the first time in capturing the fine structure of the normal mouse inner ear, such as the Reissner's membrane, and inflammatory lesions of otitis media mouse models in detail and accurately. Non-electroactive bacteria (n-EAB), constituting the majority of known bacteria to date, have been underutilized in electrochemical conversion technologies due to their lack of direct electron transfer to electrodes. In this study, we established an electric wiring between n-EAB (gram-positive Bacillus subtilis and gram-negative Escherichia coli) and an extracellular electrode via a ferrocene-polyethyleneimine-based redox polymer (Fc-PEI). Chronoamperometry recordings indicated that Fc-PEI can transfer intracellular electrons to the extracellular electrode regardless of the molecular organization of PEI (linear or branched) and the membrane structure of bacteria (gram-positive or -negative). As fluorescence staining suggested, Fc-PEI improves the permeability of the bacterial cell membrane, enabling electron carriers in the cell to react with Fc. In addition, experiments with Fc-immobilized electrodes without PEI suggested the existence of an alternative electron transfer pathway from B. subtilis to the extracellular Fc adsorbed onto the cell membrane. Furthermore, we proposed for the first time that the bacteria/Fc-linear PEI modified structure enables selective measurement of immobilized bacterial activity by physically blocking contact between the electrode surface and planktonic cells co-existing in the surrounding media. Purpose: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) may elevate susceptibility to age-related macular degeneration (AMD) because of shared risk factors, pathogenic mechanisms, and genetic polymorphisms. Given the inconclusive findings in prior studies, we investigated this association using extensive datasets in the Asian Eye Epidemiology Consortium., Design: Cross-sectional study., Participants: Fifty-one thousand two hundred fifty-three participants from 10 distinct population-based Asian studies., Methods: Age-related macular degeneration was defined using the Wisconsin Age-Related Maculopathy Grading System, the International Age-Related Maculopathy Epidemiological Study Group Classification, or the Beckman Clinical Classification. Chronic kidney disease was defined as estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) of less than 60 ml/min per 1.73 m 2 . A pooled analysis using individual-level participant data was performed to examine the associations between CKD and eGFR with AMD (early and late), adjusting for age, sex, hypertension, diabetes, body mass index, smoking status, total cholesterol, and study groups., Main Outcome Measures: Odds ratio (OR) of early and late AMD., Results: Among 51 253 participants (mean age, 54.1 ± 14.5 years), 5079 had CKD (9.9%). The prevalence of early AMD was 9.0%, and that of late AMD was 0.71%. After adjusting for confounders, individuals with CKD were associated with higher odds of late AMD (OR, 1.46; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.11-1.93; P = 0.008). Similarly, poorer kidney function (per 10-unit eGFR decrease) was associated with late AMD (OR, 1.12; 95% CI, 1.05-1.19; P = 0.001). Nevertheless, CKD and eGFR were not associated significantly with early AMD (all P ≥ 0.149)., Conclusions: Pooled analysis from 10 distinct Asian population-based studies revealed that CKD and compromised kidney function are associated significantly with late AMD. Autoimmune inner ear disease (AIED) is an organ-specific disease characterized by irreversible, prolonged, and progressive hearing and equilibrium dysfunctions. The primary symptoms of AIED include asymmetric sensorineural hearing loss accompanied by vertigo, aural fullness, and tinnitus. AIED is divided into primary and secondary types. Research has been conducted using animal models of rheumatoid arthritis (RA), a cause of secondary AIED. However, current models are insufficient to accurately analyze vestibular function, and the mechanism underlying the onset of AIED has not yet been fully elucidated. Elucidation of the mechanism of AIED onset is urgently needed to develop effective treatments. In the present study, we analyzed the pathogenesis of vertigo in autoimmune diseases using a mouse model of type II collagen-induced RA. Auditory brain stem response analysis demonstrated that the RA mouse models exhibited hearing loss, which is the primary symptom of AIED. In addition, our vestibulo-oculomotor reflex analysis, which is an excellent vestibular function test, accurately captured vertigo symptoms in the RA mouse models. Moreover, our results revealed that the cause of hearing loss and vestibular dysfunction was not endolymphatic hydrops, but rather structural destruction of the organ of Corti and the lateral semicircular canal ampulla due to an autoimmune reaction against type II collagen. Overall, we were able to establish a mouse model of AIED without endolymphatic hydrops. Background: Mepolizumab treatment improves symptom control and quality of life and reduces exacerbations in patients with severe eosinophilic asthma. However, biomarkers that predict therapeutic effectiveness must be determined for use in precision medicine. Herein, we elucidated the dynamics of various parameters before and after treatment as well as patient characteristics predictive of clinical responsiveness to mepolizumab after 1-year treatment., Methods: Twenty-seven patients with severe asthma were treated with mepolizumab for one year. Asthma control test scores, pulmonary function tests, fractional exhaled nitric oxide levels, and blood samples were evaluated. Additionally, we explored the role of CD69-positive mucosal-associated invariant T (MAIT) cells as a candidate biomarker for predicting treatment effectiveness by evaluating an OVA-induced asthma murine model using MR1 knockout mice, where MAIT cells were absent., Results: The frequencies of CD69-positive group 1 innate lymphoid cells, group 3 innate lymphoid cells, natural killer cells, and MAIT cells decreased after mepolizumab treatment. The frequency of CD69-positive MAIT cells and neutrophils was lower and serum periostin levels were higher in responders than in non-responders. In the OVA-induced asthma murine model, CD69-positive MAIT cell count in the whole mouse lung was significantly higher than that in the control mice. Moreover, OVA-induced eosinophilic airway inflammation was exacerbated in the MAIT cell-deficient MR1 knockout mice., Conclusions: This study shows that circulating CD69-positive MAIT cells, neutrophils, and serum periostin might predict the real-world response after 1-year mepolizumab treatment. Background: Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has spread rapidly since 2019, and the number of reports regarding long COVID has increased. Although the distribution of long COVID depends on patient characteristics, epidemiological data on Japanese patients are limited. Hence, this study aimed to investigate the distribution of long COVID in Japanese patients. This study is the first nationwide Japanese prospective cohort study on long COVID., Methods: This multicenter, prospective cohort study enrolled hospitalized COVID-19 patients aged ≥18 years at 26 Japanese medical institutions. In total, 1200 patients were enrolled. Clinical information and patient-reported outcomes were collected from medical records, paper questionnaires, and smartphone applications., Results: We collected data from 1066 cases with both medical records and patient-reported outcomes. The proportion of patients with at least one symptom decreased chronologically from 93.9% (947/1009) during hospitalization to 46.3% (433/935), 40.5% (350/865), and 33.0% (239/724) at 3, 6, and 12 months, respectively. Patients with at least one long COVID symptom showed lower quality of life and scored higher on assessments for depression, anxiety, and fear of COVID-19. Female sex, middle age (41-64 years), oxygen requirement, and critical condition during hospitalization were risk factors for long COVID., Conclusions: This study elucidated the symptom distribution and risks of long COVID in the Japanese population. Calcineurin inhibitor-based graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) prophylaxis is standard in allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HCT) but fails to induce long-term tolerance without chronic GVHD (cGVHD) in a considerable number of patients. In this study, we addressed this long-standing question in mouse models of HCT. After HCT, alloreactive donor T cells rapidly differentiated into PD-1+ TIGIT+ terminally exhausted T cells (terminal Tex). GVHD prophylaxis with cyclosporine (CSP) suppressed donor T-cell expression of TOX, a master regulator to promote differentiation of transitory exhausted T cells (transitory Tex), expressing both inhibitory receptors and effector molecules, into terminal Tex, and inhibited tolerance induction. Adoptive transfer of transitory Tex, but not terminal Tex, into secondary recipients developed cGVHD. Transitory Tex maintained alloreactivity and thus PD-1 blockade restored graft-versus-leukemia (GVL) activity of transitory Tex and not terminal Tex. Innate immune responses are important in the control of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) replication. We have previously found a lactic acid bacteria species, Lactococcus lactis strain Plasma (LC-Plasma), which possesses specific feature to activate plasmacytoid dendritic cells (pDCs) and thus may affect innate immune responses. Here, we investigated the impact of pDC activation by LC-Plasma on SARS-CoV-2 replication in vitro. Addition of the culture supernatant of pDCs stimulated with LC-Plasma resulted in suppression of SARS-CoV-2 replication in Vero and Calu-3 cells. We confirmed interferon-α (IFN-α) secretion in the supernatant of pDCs stimulated with LC-Plasma and induction of IFN-stimulated genes in cells treated with the pDC supernatant. Anti-IFN-α antibody impaired the suppression of SARS-CoV-2 replication by the supernatant of LC-Plasma-stimulated pDCs, suggesting that IFN-α plays an important role in the SARS-CoV-2 suppression. Isolation of valuable chemicals is an important process in reagent manufacturing for the pharmaceutical and food science industries. This process is traditionally time-consuming, expensive, and consumes vast amounts of organic solvents. Considering green chemistry and sustainability concerns, we sought to develop a sustainable chromatographic purification methodology for obtaining antibiotics by focusing on the reduction of organic solvent waste generation. Milbemectin (mixture of milbemycin A3 and milbemycin A4) was successfully purified using high-speed countercurrent chromatography (HSCCC) and pure fractions (>98% purity, HPLC) could be identified using the organic solvent fee atmospheric pressure solid analysis probe mass spectrometry (ASAP-MS). The organic solvents required for HSCCC could be redistilled and recycled for continued HSCCC purification, thus reducing the consumption of organic solvent (n-hexane/ethyl acetate) by 80+%. Optimization of the two-phase solvent system (n-hexane/ethyl acetate/methanol/water, 9/1/7/3, v/v/v/v) for HSCCC was assisted computationally, thereby reducing solvent waste from an experimental determination. Objectives: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of nafamostat combined with favipiravir for the treatment of COVID-19., Methods: We conducted a multicenter, randomized, single-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel assignment study in hospitalized patients with mild-to-moderate COVID-19 pneumonia. Patients were randomly assigned to receive favipiravir alone (n = 24) or nafamostat with favipiravir (n = 21). The outcomes included changes in the World Health Organization clinical progression scale score, time to improvement in body temperature, and improvement in oxygen saturation (SpO 2 )., Results: There was no significant difference in the changes in the clinical progression scale between nafamostat with favipiravir and favipiravir alone groups (median, -0.444 vs -0.150, respectively; least-squares mean difference, -0.294; P = 0.364). The time to improvement in body temperature was significantly shorter in the combination group (5.0 days; 95% confidence interval, 4.0-7.0) than in the favipiravir group (9.0 days; 95% confidence interval, 7.0-18.0; P =0.009). The changes in SpO 2 were greater in the combination group than in the favipiravir group (0.526% vs -1.304%, respectively; least-squares mean difference, 1.831; P = 0.022). Purpose: As we are exposed to stress on a daily basis, it is important to detect and treat stress during the subclinical period. However, methods to quantify and confirm stress are currently unavailable, and the detection of subclinical stressors is difficult. This study aimed to determine whether manganese-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MEMRI) could be used to assess stress in rat brains., Methods: We exposed male Wistar/ST rats bred in a specific pathogen-free environment to ultrasound stimuli (22 kHz and 55 kHz) for 10 days and then assessed brain activities using MEMRI, the light/dark box test, and ΔFosB immunohistochemical staining., Results: In the MEMRI assessments, exposure at 22 kHz activated the periaqueductal gray, while exposure at 55 kHz specifically enhanced activity in the nucleus accumbens core and the orbitofrontal cortex. The exploratory behavior of the 55-kHz group increased sharply, while that of the 22-kHz group showed a lower exploratory value. ΔFosB expression increased in the orbitofrontal cortex, nucleus accumbens, periaqueductal gray, and amygdaloid nucleus in the 22-kHz group., Conclusion: Ultrasound stimuli at 22 kHz suppressed weight gain in rats and excessive ΔFosB induction in the nucleus accumbens caused excessive sensitization of the neural circuit, thereby contributing to pathological behavior. Apple polyphenols (AP) have strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. We examined the effects of AP on the progression of osteoarthritis (OA) AP was administered to surgically-induced OA model rats for 4 or 8 weeks. This treatment suppressed inflammation and oxidative stress in the synovium, resulting in a decrease in the OA severity score, and the expression of tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α and matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-13 in the synovium. It was suggested that long-term administration of AP may be effective for the treatment of OA. In addition, superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity was enhanced in serum samples by AP. AP or its constituent procyanidin B2 (PC) were added to HIG-82 synoviocytes. The results showed that AP enhanced cell proliferation and hyaluronan production. This indicates that AP may improve synovial conditions in OA and suppress OA progression. Introduction: While the revised 2020 consensus guideline recommends the use of area under the concentration-time curve (AUC)-guided vancomycin monitoring, collecting multiple vancomycin serum samples to calculate the AUC may cause clinical complications. The aim of the present retrospective study was to evaluate whether AUC-guided vancomycin monitoring, in which AUC was calculated based on a single trough concentration, is a better predictor of nephrotoxicity than trough-guided monitoring in patients receiving vancomycin therapy., Methods: A single-center, retrospective cohort study was conducted at the 614-bed Gifu University Hospital in Japan. Patients who received intravenous vancomycin for a documented or suspected infection and had their serum vancomycin trough concentration monitored between October 1, 2016 and September 30, 2020 were enrolled in the present study., Results: Multivariate Cox proportional hazard analysis indicated that AUC (>600 μg•h/mL) was a significant risk factor for the incidence of acute kidney injury (AKI), while trough concentration (≥15 μg/mL) was not. Moreover, the AUC (>600 μg•h/mL) showed higher specificity and similar sensitivity to the trough concentration (≥15 μg/mL). Necropsobacter rosorum is a gram-negative facultative anaerobe, which was reclassified from the family Pasteurellaceae in 2011. It has been detected in the gastrointestinal and respiratory tracts of mammals; however, reports of infection in humans are scarce. We report a case of an abdominal abscess in which N. rosorum was detected; it was successfully treated with drainage and antimicrobial therapy. Routine laboratory testing such as matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry and an identification system using biochemical phenotypes could not identify N. rosorum. Instead, it was misidentified as other Pasteurellaceae species, including Aggregatibacter spp. or Pasteurella spp. Sequencing of 16S rRNA was required to identify N. rosorum. Background: 5-aminolevulinic acid is a protoporphyrin IX precursor used for photodynamic diagnosis. We aimed to clarify the therapeutic benefits of orally administered 5-aminolevulinic acid for photodynamic diagnosis in transurethral resection for non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer in a real-world setting., Methods: From January 2009 to December 2020, patients with non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer who have undergone visually complete resection by initial transurethral surgery were included. Histopathologically confirmed residual and intravesical recurrent bladder cancer was retrospectively investigated and compared with transurethral resection using photodynamic diagnosis and conventional white light., Results: One hundred and fifteen patients who underwent photodynamic diagnosis-transurethral resection were compared with 346 patients who underwent white light-transurethral resection. The second transurethral resection revealed that the proportion of residual T1 and Ta bladder cancer was lower in the photodynamic diagnosis group than in the white light group (10.3% vs. 33.8%, P = 0.001). Additionally, the proportion of intravesical recurrence was lower in the photodynamic diagnosis group than in the white light group (9.6% vs. 41.9%, P < 0.001). Using 5-aminolevulinic acid-photodynamic diagnosis during transurethral resection of bladder tumor improved the cumulative intravesical recurrence-free survival (log-rank test: P < 0.001). Furthermore, multivariate analyses indicated that not using 5-aminolevulinic acid-photodynamic diagnosis was an independent predictive factor for residual bladder cancer (odds ratio, 6.16; 95% confidence interval, 2.10-18.0; P < 0.001) and intravesical recurrence (hazard ratio, 2.01; 95% confidence interval, 1.05-3.83, P = 0.034)., Conclusions: Introducing 5-aminolevulinic acid-photodynamic diagnosis into transurethral resection reduces residual bladder cancer and improves the cumulative intravesical recurrence-free survival in patients with non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer, indicating its possible therapeutic benefits., (Copyright © 2022. Background: Acute renal injury is an important complication of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Both COVID-19-specific mechanisms, such as damage to the renal parenchyma by direct infection, and non-specific mechanisms, such as the pre-renal injury factors, have been proposed to be involved in COVID-19-associated renal injuries. In this study, we aimed to elucidate the characteristics of COVID-19-associated renal injuries, focusing mainly on urine sediment findings., Methods: We compared the urine sediment findings and their associations with renal functions or urinary clinical parameters between subjects with COVID-19 and subjects without COVID-19 with acute renal injuries., Results: We found that the number of urine sediment particles and the levels of N-acetyl-β-D-glucosaminidase, α1-microglobulin, liver type fatty acid-binding protein, and neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin were associated with the severity of COVID-19. In addition, we observed that the number of granular casts, epithelial casts, waxy casts, and urinary chemical marker levels were lower in the subjects with COVID-19 than subjects without COVID-19 with acute renal injuries when the subjects were classified according to their renal function., Conclusions: These results suggest that pre-renal injury factors might be largely involved in the pathogenesis of COVID-19-associated renal injuries compared with non-COVID-19-associated renal injuries arising from surgery or sepsis., (Copyright © 2022. Ivosidenib is an oral inhibitor of mutant Isocitrate dehydrogenase 1 (IDH1). It is approved for treatment of patients with relapsed or refractory IDH1-mutated acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and patients with newly diagnosed IDH1-mutated AML who are 75 years or older or those who are ineligible to receive intensive chemotherapy. While generally well tolerated, differentiation syndrome has been reported in 15-20% of patients. Here, we report a case of acute febrile neutrophilic dermatosis or Sweet's syndrome in conjunction with the use of ivosidenib for the treatment of relapsed AML. Background: Human epidermal growth factor 2 (HER2) amplification and/or overexpression occurs in 12% to 25% of breast cancers. Accurate detection of HER2 is critical in predicting response to HER2-targeted therapy. Both immunohistochemistry (IHC) and in situ hybridization (ISH) are FDA-approved methods for detecting HER2 status because its protein overexpression is largely attributable to gene amplification. However, variable discordant results between IHC and ISH have been reported., Methods: We determined the frequency of HER2 IHC/ISH discordance in these patients and also performed a pooled literature review analysis., Results: Of the 1125 consecutive primary or metastatic breast cancers with HER2 IHC and ISH performed simultaneously between 2015 and 2020, 84.6% had an unequivocal HER2 status. Discordance was found in 30 cases from 26 patients, including 13 IHC - /ISH + and 17 IHC + /ISH - , representing 1.6% and 11.9% of IHC - and IHC + cases, respectively. Review of the literature between 2001 and 2020 identified 46 relevant studies, with a total of 43,468 cases with IHC and ISH performed. The IHC - /ISH+ and IHC + /ISH - discordances were seen in all antibody clones and ISH methods used. The IHC + /ISH - discordance was significantly higher than IHC - /ISH + (13.8% vs. 3%, P < .0001). The overall discordance constituted 4% of all cases and 5.4% of those with an unequivocal IHC status. Significantly lower incongruities for both IHC - /ISH + and IHC + /ISH - were found in those published after 2018. The discordances probably reflect altered biology of HER2 oncogene/oncoprotein. Introduction: Traumatic osteoarthritis of the ankle joint caused after malleolar fractures of the ankle and tibial plafond fractures are frequently observed in comparatively young and highly active patients. Since the ankle movement in these patients is in general, comparatively favorable, orthopedists may sometimes have difficulty in deciding on a treatment policy. In our department, when treating traumatic osteoarthritis patients having a movable range within their ankle joints, we proactively applied distal tibial oblique osteotomy (DTOO) developed by Dr. Teramoto in 1994 or intra-articular osteotomy developed based on DTOO concepts such as distal tibial intra-articular osteotomy (DTIO) and distal fibular oblique osteotomy (DFOO).The objectives of the current study are to radiologically assess the ankle joint after intra-articular osteotomy for traumatic ankle osteoarthritis and evaluate the change in configuration of the ankle joint. This study summarizes the clinical results of intra-articular osteotomy obtained through the above-mentioned study., Patients and Methods: The subjects of this study were 20 patients diagnosed with traumatic osteoarthritis who were surgically treated for a total of 20 ankles. All patients underwent treatment with intra-articular osteotomy and were evaluated retrospectively for the following parameters: surgical procedure, fixation devices, clinical results based on the Japanese Society for Surgery of the Foot ankle/hindfoot scale (hereafter, JSSF scale) and post-operative adverse events. They were also assessed radiologically with pre- and post-operative anterior-posterior (AP) and lateral weight-bearing ankle radiographs., Results: The 20 patients consisted of 12 males and 8 females. The median age at surgery was 49 years old (range 14 - 87 years old) and the average follow-up period was 42 months (range 19 to 121 months). DTOO was applied to 10 cases, DFOO to 2 cases, DTOO and DFOO to 2 cases, medial-distal tibial intra-articular osteotomy (M-DTIO) and DFOO to 1 case, lateral-distal tibial intra-articular osteotomy (L-DTIO) and DFOO to 3 cases, M-DTIO followed by DTOO and DFOO to 1 case, and DTOO followed by low tibial osteotomy (LTO) to 1 case. Fixation devices utilized included circular external fixator for 15 cases, locking compression plate (LCP) to 3 cases, LCP and Kirschner-wire (K-wire) to 1 case, and screw and K-wire to 1 case. Radiological assessment revealed significant changes in the following parameters after surgery: tibial ankle surface angle (TAS, P= 0.0203), tibiotalar surface angle (TTS, P= 0.0021), medial malleolar angle (MMA, P= 0.0217), empirical axis (EA, P= 0.0019), fibular angle (FA, P= 0.0002), talar tilt angle (TTA, P= 0.0374), and tibial lateral surface angle (TLS, P= 0.0279). The JSSF scale also improved significantly after surgery (pre-operative JSSF scale: 51.1±11.0, post-operative JSSF scale: 89.2±8.2), p=0.0001., Conclusion: Intra-articular osteotomy may change the radiological configuration of the ankle in a weight-bearing state. The present study showed very good short-term clinical results. Background: Recurrent angioedema (RecAE) has a substantial impact on patients' daily lives. However, there have been no disease-specific patient-reported outcomes (PROs) available in Japan to measure disease activity and health-related QoL impairment in such patients., Methods: Japanese versions of the Angioedema Activity Score (AAS) and the Angioedema Quality of Life Questionnaire (AE-QoL) were examined for their validity and reliability. By using these questionnaires, the relationship between disease activity and QoL impairment among the Japanese population of RecAE were analyzed in real-world setting., Results: The Japanese AAS and AE-QoL domains showed good internal consistency of 0.967 and > 0.835. For known group validity, AAS28 and AE-QoL total scores were higher in more severe patients than those with milder disease and QoL impairment, respectively. AAS28 showed strong correlation with indexes of disease activity, while the AE-QoL total score correlated with Dermatology Life Quality Index (DLQI). Sufficient reproductivity of the AAS and AE-QoL was shown by their intraclass correlation coefficients of 0.890 and 0.700. The Japanese population is characterized by the total score of AAS28, 34.3 ± 38.8 (mean ± SD); and AE-QoL, 38.7 ± 25.2. Each domain score of AE-QoL was 32.4 ± 29.7 in "Functioning", 35.0 ± 27.8 in "Fatigue/mood", 50.7 ± 30.6 in "Fears/shame", or 24.7 ± 29.8 in "Food". Changes in AAS28 and AE-QoL positively correlated to Patient global assessment of disease activity and DLQI, respectively., Conclusions: The Japanese AAS and AE-QoL are valid and reliable instruments for Japanese patients with RecAE, and active disease affecting QoL. Disseminated community-acquired infections caused by the hypervirulent Klebsiella pneumoniae (hvKp) among relatively healthy individuals in East Asia have been reported in recent years. Isolate of the capsular genotype K1, belonging to sequence type (ST) 23, is the most common causative agent of this disease. We experienced two cases of K1-ST23 infection with a travel history in East Asia, and hvKp infection was diagnosed after entering or returning to Japan. Case 1 was a 45-year-old Myanmar seaman with a history of ischemic heart disease who developed a fever on board and was transported to Japan via Shanghai and Taiwan. He had multiple disseminated lesions due to K. pneumoniae; other symptoms included liver abscess, intraocular inflammation, intraventricular thrombosis, brain abscess, and bloodstream infection. Along with antimicrobial treatment, drainage of liver abscesses and surgery for intraocular inflammation and intraventricular thrombosis were required. The patient was discharged 93 days after admission, with little improvement in the visual acuity. Case 2: A 29-year-old Japanese man with no underlying disease developed a prostate abscess and bloodstream infection caused by K. pneumoniae after a trip to Korea. However, he improved only with antimicrobial treatment. K. pneumoniae in both cases were identified to have the rmpA gene, with capsular genotypes K1 and ST23. Further, both cases were considered to have been infected with hvKp during their stay in East Asia. Background: Choline is an essential nutrient; however, the associations of choline and its related metabolites with cardiometabolic risk remain unclear., Objective: We examined the associations of circulating choline, betaine, carnitine, and dimethylglycine (DMG) with cardiometabolic biomarkers and their potential dietary and nondietary determinants., Methods: The cross-sectional analyses included 32,853 participants from 17 studies, who were free of cancer, cardiovascular diseases, chronic kidney diseases, and inflammatory bowel disease. In each study, metabolites and biomarkers were log-transformed and standardized by means and SDs, and linear regression coefficients (β) and 95% CIs were estimated with adjustments for potential confounders. Study-specific results were combined by random-effects meta-analyses. A false discovery rate <0.05 was considered significant., Results: We observed moderate positive associations of circulating choline, carnitine, and DMG with creatinine [β (95% CI): 0.136 (0.084, 0.188), 0.106 (0.045, 0.168), and 0.128 (0.087, 0.169), respectively, for each SD increase in biomarkers on the log scale], carnitine with triglycerides (β = 0.076; 95% CI: 0.042, 0.109), homocysteine (β = 0.064; 95% CI: 0.033, 0.095), and LDL cholesterol (β = 0.055; 95% CI: 0.013, 0.096), DMG with homocysteine (β = 0.068; 95% CI: 0.023, 0.114), insulin (β = 0.068; 95% CI: 0.043, 0.093), and IL-6 (β = 0.060; 95% CI: 0.027, 0.094), but moderate inverse associations of betaine with triglycerides (β = -0.146; 95% CI: -0.188, -0.104), insulin (β = -0.106; 95% CI: -0.130, -0.082), homocysteine (β = -0.097; 95% CI: -0.149, -0.045), and total cholesterol (β = -0.074; 95% CI: -0.102, -0.047). In the whole pooled population, no dietary factor was associated with circulating choline; red meat intake was associated with circulating carnitine [β = 0.092 (0.042, 0.142) for a 1 serving/d increase], whereas plant protein was associated with circulating betaine [β = 0.249 (0.110, 0.388) for a 5% energy increase]. Demographics, lifestyle, and metabolic disease history showed differential associations with these metabolites., Conclusions: Circulating choline, carnitine, and DMG were associated with unfavorable cardiometabolic risk profiles, whereas circulating betaine was associated with a favorable cardiometabolic risk profile. When using deep neural networks in medical image classification tasks, it is mandatory to prepare a large-scale labeled image set, and this often requires significant effort by medical experts. One strategy to reduce the labeling cost is group-based labeling, where image samples are clustered and then a label is attached to each cluster. The efficiency of this strategy depends on the purity of the clusters. Constrained clustering is an effective way to improve the purity of the clusters if we can give appropriate must-links and cannot-links as constraints. However, for medical image clustering, the conventional constrained clustering methods encounter two issues. The first issue is that constraints are not always appropriate due to the gap between semantic and visual similarities. The second issue is that attaching constraints requires extra effort from medical experts. To deal with the first issue, we propose a novel soft-constrained clustering method, which has the ability to ignore inappropriate constraints. To deal with the second issue, we propose a self-constrained clustering method that utilizes prior knowledge about the target images to set the constraints automatically. Background: Distinguishing coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pneumonia from other lung diseases is often difficult, especially in a highly comorbid patient population in a low prevalence region. We aimed to distinguish clinical data and computed tomography (CT) images between COVID-19 and other lung diseases in an advanced care hospital., Methods: We assessed clinical characteristics, laboratory data, and chest CT images of patients with COVID-19 and non-COVID-19 patients who were suspected of having COVID-19 between February 20 and May 21, 2020, at the University of Tokyo Hospital., Results: Typical appearance for COVID-19 on CT images were found in 24 of 29 COVID-19 cases and 21 of 168 non-COVID-19 cases, according to the Radiological Society of North America Expert Consensus Statement (for predicting COVID-19, sensitivity 0.828, specificity 0.875, positive predictive value 0.533, negative predictive value 0.967). When we focused on cases with typical CT images, loss of taste or smell, and close contact with COVID-19 patients were exclusive characteristics for the COVID-19 cases. Among laboratory data, high fibrinogen (P < 0.01) and low white blood cell count (P < 0.01) were good predictors for COVID-19 with typical CT images in multivariate analysis., Conclusions: In a relatively low prevalence region, CT screening has high sensitivity to COVID-19 in patients with suspected symptoms. Background: Previous reports have shown that pathogen-associated patterns (PAMPs) induce the production of interleukin (IL)-1β in macrophages. Moreover, studies using mouse models also suggest that chitin, which acts as a PAMP, induces adjuvant effects and eosinophilic infiltration in the lung. Thus, we investigated the effects of inhaled chitin in mouse models., Methods: We developed mouse models of inhaled chitin particle-induced airway inflammation and steroid-resistant ovalbumin (OVA)-induced airway inflammation. Some experimental groups of mice were treated additionally with dexamethasone (DEX). Murine alveolar macrophages (AMs), which were purified from bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) fluids, were incubated with chitin, and treated with or without DEX., Results: The numbers of total cells, AMs, lymphocytes, eosinophils, and neutrophils among BAL-derived cells, as well as the IL-1β levels in BAL fluids and the numbers of IL-1β-positive cells in lung, were significantly increased by chitin stimulation. Airway hyperresponsiveness (AHR) was aggravated in mice of the chitin inflammation model compared to control animals. The production of IL-1β was significantly increased in murine AMs by chitin treatment, but DEX administration did not inhibit this chitin-induced IL-1β production. Furthermore, in mouse models, DEX treatment inhibited the OVA-induced airway inflammation and AHR but not the airway inflammation and AHR induced by chitin or the combination of OVA and chitin., Conclusions: These results suggest that inhaled chitin induces airway inflammation, AHR, and the production of IL-1β. Furthermore, our findings demonstrate for the first time that inhaled chitin induces steroid-resistant airway inflammation and AHR. Background: Trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO), a diet-derived, gut microbial-host cometabolite, has been linked to cardiometabolic diseases. However, the relations remain unclear between diet, TMAO, and cardiometabolic health in general populations from different regions and ethnicities., Objectives: To examine associations of circulating TMAO with dietary and cardiometabolic factors in a pooled analysis of 16 population-based studies from the United States, Europe, and Asia., Methods: Included were 32,166 adults (16,269 white, 13,293 Asian, 1247 Hispanic/Latino, 1236 black, and 121 others) without cardiovascular disease, cancer, chronic kidney disease, or inflammatory bowel disease. Linear regression coefficients (β) were computed for standardized TMAO with harmonized variables. Study-specific results were combined by random-effects meta-analysis. A false discovery rate <0.10 was considered significant., Results: After adjustment for potential confounders, circulating TMAO was associated with intakes of animal protein and saturated fat (β = 0.124 and 0.058, respectively, for a 5% energy increase) and with shellfish, total fish, eggs, and red meat (β = 0.370, 0.151, 0.081, and 0.056, respectively, for a 1 serving/d increase). Plant protein and nuts showed inverse associations (β = -0.126 for a 5% energy increase from plant protein and -0.123 for a 1 serving/d increase of nuts). Although the animal protein-TMAO association was consistent across populations, fish and shellfish associations were stronger in Asians (β = 0.285 and 0.578), and egg and red meat associations were more prominent in Americans (β = 0.153 and 0.093). Besides, circulating TMAO was positively associated with creatinine (β = 0.131 SD increase in log-TMAO), homocysteine (β = 0.065), insulin (β = 0.048), glycated hemoglobin (β = 0.048), and glucose (β = 0.023), whereas it was inversely associated with HDL cholesterol (β = -0.047) and blood pressure (β = -0.030). Each TMAO-biomarker association remained significant after further adjusting for creatinine and was robust in subgroup/sensitivity analyses., Conclusions: In an international, consortium-based study, animal protein was consistently associated with increased circulating TMAO, whereas TMAO associations with fish, shellfish, eggs, and red meat varied among populations. Acetate:succinate CoA transferase (ASCT) is a mitochondrial enzyme that catalyzes the production of acetate and succinyl-CoA, which is coupled to ATP production with succinyl-CoA synthetase (SCS) in a process called the ASCT/SCS cycle. This cycle has been studied in Trypanosoma brucei (T. brucei), a pathogen of African sleeping sickness, and is involved in (i) ATP and (ii) acetate production and proceeds independent of oxygen and an electrochemical gradient. Interestingly, knockout of ASCT in procyclic form (PCF) of T. brucei cause oligomycin A-hypersensitivity phenotype indicating that ASCT/SCS cycle complements the deficiency of ATP synthase activity. In bloodstream form (BSF) of T. brucei, ATP synthase works in reverse to maintain the electrochemical gradient by hydrolyzing ATP. However, no information has been available on the source of ATP, although ASCT/SCS cycle could be a potential candidate. Regarding mitochondrial acetate production, which is essential for fatty acid biosynthesis and growth of T. brucei, ASCT or acetyl-CoA hydrolase (ACH) are known to be its source. Despite the importance of this cycle, direct evidence of its function is lacking, and there are no comprehensive biochemical or structural biology studies reported so far. Here, we show that in vitro-reconstituted ASCT/SCS cycle is highly specific towards acetyl-CoA and has a higher k cat than that of yeast and bacterial ATP synthases. Purpose: Although there have been many population-based studies of age-related macular degeneration (AMD), only limited information is available in Asia on the epidemiology of geographic atrophy (GA). We aimed to determine the prevalence and patterns of GA through an analysis of multiple studies conducted within the Asian Eye Epidemiology Consortium (AEEC)., Design: Cross-sectional meta-analyses., Participants: A total of 97 213 individuals aged 40 years and older., Methods: Data from 22 population-based studies from countries belonging to the AEEC were included. In all studies, AMD was defined on the basis of standardized grading systems. Geographic atrophy was defined as an area of pallor in the fundus with visibility of the underlying choroidal blood vessels and sharply defined borders. Random-effects meta-analysis was performed to estimate overall and age-, gender-, and region-specific pooled prevalence of GA., Main Outcome Measures: Prevalence of GA per 1000 persons., Results: The mean age was 60.8 ± 10.0 years, and 42 673 (43.9%) were male. Overall, a total of 223 individuals (0.2%) had GA. The pooled overall prevalence of GA was 1.57 per 1000 persons (95% confidence interval [CI], 1.04-2.10), which was 3 times less than that of neovascular AMD of 5.20 per 1000 persons (95% CI, 3.97-6.43). Compared with those aged 50 to 59 years, the prevalence of GA increased from 0.34 per 1000 persons (95% CI, 0.07-0.62) to 2.90 per 1000 persons (95% CI, 1.55-4.25) in those aged ≥70 years. The GA prevalence per 1000 persons was similar between urban (2.22; 95% CI, 1.22-3.23) and rural residents (1.33; 95% CI, 0.70-1.96). Geographic atrophy was more prevalent in South Asia (based on studies from India and Nepal, 3.82 per 1000 persons; 95% CI, 1.72-5.93) compared with East Asia (based on studies from China, Korea, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Japan, and the Singapore Chinese Eye Study, 0.76 per 1000 persons; 95% CI, 0.31-1.22, P = 0.005)., Conclusions: Geographic atrophy is uncommon in Asian populations compared with those of European ancestry. Even within Asia, geographic differences in GA prevalence were seen. Background: There is an interest in quantifying dynamic hip kinematics before and after total hip arthroplasty (THA) during chair-rising: one of daily life activities., Methods: The study consisted of 21 patients who underwent unilateral total hip arthroplasty for symptomatic osteoarthritis. We obtained continuous radiographs using a flat-panel X-ray detector while the participants rose from chair. We assessed the pre and postoperative hip joint's movements using three-dimensional-to-two-dimensional model-to-image registration techniques. We also measured minimum liner-to-neck distances at maximum hip flexion and extension as anterior and posterior liner-to-neck distances, respectively. Multivariate analyses were applied to determine which factors were associated with liner-to-neck distances., Results: The cup inclination, cup anteversion, and stem anteversion averaged 37.4°, 23.1°, and 30.1°, respectively. Significantly larger maximum hip flexion angle (72°) was found during chair-rising after THA compared to that before THA (63°, P < 0.01). The anterior pelvic tilt at the maximum hip flexion after THA (3° of anterior tilt) was significantly (P < 0.05) anterior compared to that before THA (1° of posterior tilt). The anterior and posterior liner-to-neck distances averaged 12.3 mm and 8.1 mm, respectively, with a significant difference (P < 0.01). No liner-to-neck contact was found in any hips. In multivariate analysis, the hip flexion angle, cup inclination, stem anteversion and head diameter were significantly associated with the anterior liner-to-neck distance (P < 0.05), the hip extension angle, cup anteversion, neck length and with or without elevated rim were significantly associated with the posterior liner-to-neck distance (P < 0.05, 0.01, 0.05, 0.01, respectively)., Conclusion: This study indicates that well-positioned THA provide increased range of hip flexion with sufficient anterior liner-to-neck clearance during chair-rising. Objective: There are currently no robust methods for accurately localizing the infection focus of osteomyelitis. Accumulation of fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) is nonspecific, and it is well-known that it can indicate inflammatory cells and sites of inflammation, and its effectiveness in detecting osteomyelitis has been reported recently. However, the optimal cut-off value for the Standardized Uptake Value (SUV) in detecting the focus of osteomyelitis through 18F-FDG-PET/CT is not known. We investigated the optimal SUV cut-off values using 18F-FDG positron emission tomography (PET)computed tomography (CT) to visualize the infection focus of osteomyelitis accurately., Patients and Methods: Initially, we investigated a case where osteomyelitis was bacteriologically detected after orthopedic surgery on lower limb. Based on the surgical pathology, we explored the optimal SUV cut-off value of the 18F-FDG PET/CT image taken before surgery. The SUV cut-off value was varied, using the GE Rainbow Color Scale on a dedicated workstation. We searched for the most accurate visualization of the extent of the infectious lesion. Subsequently, using the SUV cut-off value decided on the basis of the first case studied, we investigated the accuracy for diagnosing osteomyelitis. A total of sixteen patients underwent 18F-FDG PET/CT for suspected osteomyelitis (one case involved the upper extremity and 15 cases the lower one). All patients underwent surgery. The final diagnosis was made by means of bacteriologic culture of surgical specimens and histopathologic analysis. We compared surgical pathology and preoperative 18F-FDG PET/CT., Results: In the first case studied, the infection was most accurately localized with a SUV with a lower level of 2.00 and an upper of 8.00. Upon comparing the pathological findings and the 18F-FDG PET/CT, we set a SUV with a lower level of 2.00 and an upper level of 8.00. In thirteen cases, infection was detected with positive pathological findings. Preoperative 18F-FDG PET/CT showed high accumulation in these cases. In the remaining three cases, no infection was detected on either pathological findings nor 18F-FDG PET/CT findings., Conclusions: The infection focus of osteomyelitis was accurately visualized by setting the SUV cut-off lower level to 2.00 and upper level to 8.00. Background: Branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs) play a key role in energy homeostasis., Objective: We aimed to investigate the association between plasma BCAA levels and dyslipidemia in the Japanese population without diabetes mellitus., Methods: This cross-sectional study included 4952 participants without diabetes mellitus, enrolled in the Tsuruoka Metabolomic Cohort Study. Plasma BCAA levels were measured by capillary electrophoresis-mass spectrometry. Correlations between lipid and BCAA profiles were evaluated by sex-stratified multiple linear regression analyses, after adjusting for confounders. Logistic regression was used to identify associations between BCAAs and metabolic dyslipidemia (MD) defined as triglyceride levels ≥150 mg/dL, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels ≤40 mg/dL for men and ≤50 mg/dL for women, or low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) levels ≥140 mg/dL., Results: In both sexes, the levels of individual BCAAs and the total BCAA levels correlated positively with triglyceride levels and negatively with high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels. Valine, leucine, and total BCAA levels were weakly and positively correlated with LDL-C levels. Increased BCAA levels showed positive associations with MD. However, associations between BCAAs and elevated LDL-C levels were unclear. Furthermore, the associations between BCAA levels and MD regardless of fasting blood sugar (FBS) levels (high or low). Although valine, leucine, and total BCAA levels were weakly associated with elevated LDL-C levels in the high-FBS group, no such association was observed in the low-FBS group., Conclusions: BCAAs might be associated with MD independently of the FBS level and might play an important role in lipid metabolism and dyslipidemia., (Copyright © 2019 National Lipid Association. The case of a patient with left ventricular assist device (LVAD)-associated endocarditis involving multiple clones of Staphylococcus aureus is presented. Different clones with distinct colony morphology were identified from blood cultures collected on the same day and showed diverse antimicrobial resistance patterns. In addition, a difference in antimicrobial susceptibility was observed even within an identical clone recovered 400 days apart due to the loss of SCCmec for methicillin and modification of the 23S rRNA target site for linezolid during a long-term treatment course., (Copyright © 2019 The Author(s). The alternative oxidase (AOX) is a monotopic diiron carboxylate protein which catalyzes the four-electron reduction of dioxygen to water by ubiquinol. Although we have recently determined the crystal structure of Trypanosoma brucei AOX (TAO) in the presence and absence of ascofuranone (AF) derivatives (which are potent mixed type inhibitors) the mechanism by which ubiquinol and dioxygen binds to TAO remain inconclusive. In this article, ferulenol was identified as the first competitive inhibitor of AOX which has been used to probe the binding of ubiquinol. Surface plasmon resonance reveals that AF is a quasi-irreversible inhibitor of TAO whilst ferulenol binding is completely reversible. The structure of the TAO-ferulenol complex, determined at 2.7 Å, provided insights into ubiquinol binding and has also identified a potential dioxygen molecule bound in a side-on conformation to the diiron center for the first time., (Crown Copyright © 2019. Background: Cochineal dye is used worldwide as a red coloring in foods, drinks, cosmetics, quasi-drugs, and drugs. The main component of the red color is carminic acid (CA). Carmine is an aluminum- or calcium-chelated product of CA. CA and carmine usually contain contaminating proteins, including a 38-kDa protein thought to be the primary allergen. Severe allergic reactions manifest as anaphylaxis. The aim of this study was to review all Japanese reported cases and propose useful diagnostic chart., Methods: All reported Japanese cases of cochineal dye-induced immediate allergy were reviewed, and newly registered cases were examined by skin prick test (SPT) with cochineal extract (CE) and measurement of CE and carmine-specific serum IgE test. Two-dimensional (2D) western blotting using patient serum was conducted to identify the antigen., Results: Twenty-two Japanese cases have been reported. SPT and the level of specific IgE test indicated that six cases should be newly registered as cochineal dye allergy. All cases were adult females, and all cases except three involved anaphylaxis; 13 cases involved past history of local symptoms associated with cosmetics use. Japanese strawberry juice and fish-meat sausage, and European processed foods (especially macarons made in France) and drinks were recent major sources of allergen. 2D western blotting showed that patient IgE reacted to the 38-kDa protein and other proteins. Serum from healthy controls also weakly reacted with these proteins., Conclusions: SPT with CE and determination of the level of CE and carmine-specific IgE test are useful methods for the diagnosis of cochineal dye allergy., (Copyright © 2018 Japanese Society of Allergology. Plasmodium falciparum is an apicomplexan parasite that causes the most severe malaria in humans. Due to a lack of effective vaccines and emerging of drug resistance parasites, development of drugs with novel mechanisms of action and few side effects are imperative. To this end, ideal drug targets are those essential to parasite viability as well as absent in their mammalian hosts. The mitochondrial electron transport chain (ETC) of P. falciparum is one source of such potential targets because enzymes, such as L-malate:quinone oxidoreductase (PfMQO), in this pathway are absent humans. PfMQO catalyzes the oxidation of L-malate to oxaloacetate and the simultaneous reduction of ubiquinone to ubiquinol. It is a membrane protein, involved in three pathways (ETC, the tricarboxylic acid cycle and the fumarate cycle) and has been shown to be essential for parasite survival, at least, in the intra-erythrocytic asexual stage. These findings indicate that PfMQO would be a valuable drug target for development of antimalarial with novel mechanism of action. Up to this point in time, difficulty in producing active recombinant mitochondrial MQO has hampered biochemical characterization and targeted drug discovery with MQO. Here we report for the first time recombinant PfMQO overexpressed in bacterial membrane and the first biochemical study. Furthermore, about 113 compounds, consisting of ubiquinone binding site inhibitors and antiparasitic agents, were screened resulting in the discovery of ferulenol as a potent PfMQO inhibitor. Finally, ferulenol was shown to inhibit parasite growth and showed strong synergism in combination with atovaquone, a well-described anti-malarial and bc 1 complex inhibitor., (Copyright © 2017 Elsevier B.V.
