Abstract

International audience; The powerful combination of steady state isotopic transient kinetic analysis (SSITKA) and operando infrared spectroscopy (IR) was applied to study the CO oxidation reaction on Pd-supported Al2O3 catalyst at low temperature. The aim was to reveal the true role of hydrogen‑carbonate species in the reaction mechanism. The SSITKA-IR experiments, conducted in presence and absence of CO2 in the gas feed, have confirmed that hydrogen‑carbonate species behave as spectator species in the reaction. Its formation was due to re-adsorption of the CO2 product itself on the alumina surface as confirmed by the direct 12CO2/13CO2 exchange observed on the bare support.

Abstract

This paper investigated the finite-time stability (FTS) and nearly fixed-time stability (nFxTS) of nonlinear impulsive systems with destabilizing impulses. The concept of nFxTS is different from FxTS, as the former may be just asymptotically stable but the latter must be FTS. A Lyapunov inequality with linear terms has been used to derive sufficient conditions based on the dwell time (DT) and average dwell time (ADT) properties of impulsive sequences to ensure FTS/FxTS of the system. Theorems are constructed based on the initial state of the system, which belongs to either-neighbourhood(nbh) or outside-nbh of the origin. When the system starts within −nbh of the origin then FTS can be achieved by the system following conditions on DT and ADT of impulsive sequences. The same is true for nFxTS of the system when it starts outside-nbh of the origin. We investigated the condition on DT for which nFxTS is not possible, but FTS is possible only if > 0 is bounded. The main results of this paper are applied to the synchronization problem of impulsive neural networks with destablizing impulses. Finally, a numerical example of an impulsive neural network is given to illustrate the validity of the proposed theoretical results.

Abstract

Hierarchy provides unique opportunities for the design of advanced materials with superior properties that arise from architecture, rather than from constitutive material response. Contrary to the quasi-static regime, where the potential of hierarchy has been largely explored, its role in vibration mitigation and wave manipulation remains elusive. So far, the majority of the studies concerning hierarchical elastic metamaterials have proposed a self-similar repetition of a specific unit cell at multiple scale levels, leading to the activation of the same bandgap mechanism at different frequencies. On the contrary, here, we show that by designing non self-similar hierarchical geometries allows us to create periodic structures supporting multiple, highly attenuative and broadband bandgaps involving (independently or simultaneously) different scattering mechanisms, namely, Bragg scattering, local resonance and/or inertial amplification, at different frequencies. The type of band gap mechanism is identified and discussed by examining the vibrational mode shapes and the imaginary component of the wavenumber in the dispersion diagram of the unit cell. We also experimentally confirm this by performing measurements in the lowest frequency regime on a 3D printed structure. Abstract

International audience; In this work, two series of oxime esters (OXE) based on Pyrene and Anthracene chromophores were synthesized and tested as Type Ⅰ photoinitiators for the Free Radical Photopolymerization (FRP) under visible irradiation at 405 nm using light-emitting diodes (LED) as the irradiation source. Interestingly, the two series of oxime esters only differ by the nature of the substituents connected to the oxime ester functional group. As a result of this modification, the reactivity of the different compounds only depends on the rate of decomposition from their excited states as well as the reactivity of the generated radicals. Remarkably, the 18 Pyrene-based OXEs (Py-OXE) and 17 Anthracene-based OXEs (An-OXE) were never synthesized prior to this work. Pyrene and Anthracene chromophores were selected as benchmark structures reacting mainly from their first excited singlet (S1) and triplet (T1) states, respectively. This will allow to shed some light on the excited states responsible of the cleavage of OXEs. Therefore, originality of this study relies in the difference of the initiation ability between these two families. In fact, the results showed that Py-OXEs (0.5% w) are the most efficient systems compared to An-OXEs, so that higher final conversions and rates of polymerization could be obtained with Py-OXEs. Influence of the OXE structure (both chromophores and leaving groups) is discussed on the basis of different characterization techniques such as: UV-visible absorption spectroscopy, photolysis experiments, real-time Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (RT-FTIR), stationary fluorescence and time-2 resolved fluorescence. Therefore, a global mechanism is finally provided based on the complementary characterization data. Oxime ester derivatives were also tested under air for the generation of 3D patterns (by Direct Laser Write DLW) using a diode laser at 405 nm.

Abstract

International audience; Compounds of general formula ABO3 are widely studied due to their versatility regarding chemical composition, structure and physical properties. The use of high-pressure and high-temperature synthesis method allows the introduction of small Mn 2+ cation into the often-large A site, giving rise to the so-called Asite manganites, with a few exceptions to this rule. Polymorphism, structural features and magnetic properties of A-site manganites are revisited in this short review dedicated to Miguel A. Alario y Franco on his 80 th birthday. We extend this dedication to John B. Goodenough and J. Paul Attfield on their 100 th and 60 th birthdays in recognition of their ground work. Happy birthday all three!

Abstract

In the last decade, several studies have shown that facial attractiveness can be learned by machines. In this paper, we address Facial Beauty Prediction from static images. The paper contains three main contributions. First, we propose a two-branch architecture (REX-INCEP) based on merging the architecture of two already trained networks to deal with the complicated high-level features associated with the FBP problem. Second, we introduce the use of a dynamic law to control the behaviour of the following robust loss functions during training: ParamSmoothL1, Huber and Tukey. Third, we propose an ensemble regression based on Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs). In this ensemble, we use both the basic networks and our proposed network (REX-INCEP). The proposed individual CNN regressors are trained with different loss functions, namely MSE, dynamic ParamSmoothL1, dynamic Huber and dynamic Tukey. Our approach is evaluated on the SCUT-FBP5500 database using the two evaluation scenarios provided by the database creators: 60%-40% split and five-fold cross-validation. In both evaluation scenarios, our approach outperforms the state of the art on several metrics. These comparisons highlight the effectiveness of the proposed solutions for FBP. They also show that the proposed dynamic robust losses lead to more flexible and accurate estimators. This work was partially funded by the University of the Basque Country , GUI19/027.

Abstract

International audience; The formation of deposits by evaporation of droplets contaminated by Bacillus spores was investigated, focusing on the role of spore and material properties. Droplets containing hydrophilic to hydrophobic spores were deposited on materials (stainless steels, polypropylene, glass). The presence of spores within the droplets, as well as material hydrophobicity plays a major role in the kinetics of the droplet shape during drying while the pattern of the dried deposit was affected by both material and spore properties. The resistance to detachment of the different deposits was then investigated. After a single rinsing procedure, a very high resistance to detachment of adherent spores was observed (up to 90% of residual spores). The hydrophilic Bs PY79 spores were the least resistant to removal, while the differences between materials were not pronounced. The ease of cleaning of the dried deposits was much greater. The least resistant spores were still the Bs PY79 ones, while the detachment was 3–100 times more effective on glass than on other materials.These results highlight the predominant role of hydrophilic/hydrophobic properties of particles and materials on the structure of deposits and their further resistance to rinsing and cleaning procedures.

Abstract

International audience; This paper presents a sliding mode observer (SMO) design method to estimate the states and unknown inputs (UIs) in a class of non-infinitely observable (NIO) descriptor systems that contain UIs in both the state and output equations. Existing works on SMO design for NIO systems did not consider UIs in the output equation. In order to overcome the difficulty caused by UIs in output channels and the NIO condition, we reformulated the original system and introduced new UIs to replace the original UIs to obtain an equivalent infinitely observable descriptor system whose output does not contain any UI. Based on the developed equivalent system, a new SMO method is proposed to estimate both the states and the UIs. Subsequently, the necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of the SMO are derived in terms of the original system matrices, which thus makes the conditions easy to be examined. Finally, an example is used to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Abstract

Cochlear implants containing iridium platinum electrodes are used to transmit electrical signals into the inner ear of patients suffering from severe or profound deafness without valuable benefit from conventional hearing aids. However, their placement is invasive and can cause trauma as well as local inflammation, harming remaining hair cells or other inner ear cells. As foreign bodies, the implants also induce fibrosis, resulting in a less efficient conduction of the electrical signals and, thus, potentially decreased system performance. To overcome these obstacles, dexamethasone has recently been embedded in this type of implants: into the silicone matrices separating the metal electrodes (to avoid short circuits). It has been shown that the resulting drug release can be controlled over several years. Importantly, the dexamethasone does not only act against the immediate consequences of trauma, inflammation and fibrosis, it can also be expected to be beneficial for remaining hair cells in the long term. However, the reported amounts of drug released at “early” time points (during the first days/weeks) are relatively low and the in vivo efficacy in animal models was reported to be non-optimal. The aim of this study was to increase the initial “burst release” from the implants, adding a freely water-soluble salt of a phosphate ester of dexamethasone. The idea was to facilitate water penetration into the highly hydrophobic system and, thus, to promote drug dissolution and diffusion. This approach was efficient: Adding up to 10% dexamethasone sodium phosphate to the silicone matrices substantially increased the resulting drug release rate at early time points. This can be expected to improve drug action and implant functionality. But at elevated dexamethasone sodium phosphate loadings device swelling became important. Since the cochlea is a tiny and sensitive organ, a potential increase in implant dimensions over time must be limited. Abstract

International audience; The solubility of the scarcely water-soluble molecule tetrahydrocurcumin (THC), a promising curcumin derivative to be used as biopesticide, was enhanced through the formation of inclusion complexes with different cyclodextrins (CDs). Randomly methylated β-cyclodextrin (MeβCD) gave the best results among the different CDs whose size, substituent or structure was changing. Differential scanning calorimetry as well as 1H- and 2D-Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) proved the inclusion of THC in MeβCD. Rotating-frame Overhauser effect spectroscopy NMR especially illustrated specific interactions of aromatic protons of THC and protons located inside the CD cavity. The complex formation between THC and MeβCD was studied using the Higuchi and Connor method, giving an association constant of 591 M−1. THC-loaded MeβCD did not show any growth inhibition of the target fungus Fusarium graminearum. However, THC-loaded MeβCD polymers exhibited 25 % inhibition of the fungal growth, thus making them promising material for solvent-free, aqueous and bio-based fungicide formulations.

Abstract

This paper is the first of three that overview the main mechanisms that drive the microstructure evolution in Fe alloys under irradiation. It focuses on pure a-Fe and compiles the parameters that describe quantitatively the mobility and stability of point-defects and especially their clusters, including possible reactions and criteria to decide when they should react. These parameters are the result of several years of calculations and application in microstructure evolution models. They are mainly collected from the literature and the parameter choice tries to reconcile different sets of values that, while being in general qualitatively similar, are often quantitatively not coincident. A few calculation results are presented here for the first time to support specific approximations concerning defect properties or features. Since calculations cannot cover all possible defect configurations, the definition of these parameters often requires educated guesses to fill knowledge gaps. These guesses are here listed and discussed whenever relevant. This is therefore a “hands-on” paper that: (i) collects in a single report most microstructure evolution parameters that are found in the literature for irradiated a-Fe, including a discussion of the most important mechanisms at play based on current knowledge; (ii) selects a ready-to-use set that can be employed in microstructure evolution models, such as those based on object kinetic Monte Carlo (OKMC) methods. This work also identifies parameters that are needed, but not known, hopefully prompting corresponding calculations in the future. Abstract

Fischer-Tropsch synthesis provides an important opportunity for utilization of biomass and plastic waste. Iron catalysts are the catalysts of choice for light olefin synthesis using Fischer-Tropsch reaction. In this paper, we investigate strong promoting effects of antimony and tin on the catalytic performance of silica supported iron Fischer-Tropsch catalysts using a combination of advanced and in-situ techniques. The catalyst doping with these elements added via impregnation results in a major increase in the reaction rate and much better catalyst stability. No enhancement of iron dispersion was observed after the promotion, while somewhat higher extent of iron carbidization was observed in the antimony promoted catalysts. Iron-bismuth bimetallic nanoparticles are detected by several techniques. In the working catalysts, the promoters are located in close proximity to the iron nanoparticles. The promotion leads to the 7–10 times increase in the intrinsic activity of iron surface sites due to their interaction with the promoters. 292

Abstract

In the present work, we aim to investigate the ability of the zirconium-based MOF-type compound UiO-66-NH2, to immobilize molecular gaseous iodine under conditions analogous to those encountered in an operating Filtered Containment Venting System (FCVS) line. Typically, the UiO-66-NH2 particles were exposed to 131I (beta and gamma emitters) and submitted to air/steam at 120°C, under gamma irradiation (1.9 kGy.h-1). In parallel to this experiment under simulated accidental conditions, the stability of the binderless UiO-66-NH2 granules under steam and gamma irradiation was investigated. In order to fit with the specifications required by typical venting systems, and to compare the efficiency of the selected MOF to porous materials commonly used by the industry, scale-up syntheses and UiO-66-NH2 millimetric-size shaping were realized. For this task, we developed an original binderless method, in order to analyze solely the efficiency of the UiO-66-NH2 material. The shaped MOF particles were then submitted separately to gamma irradiation, steam and temperature, for confirming their viability in a venting process. Their structural, textural and mechanical behaviors were characterized by the means several techniques including gas sorption, powder X-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy and crushing tests. Promising results were obtained to trap gaseous molecular iodine in severe accidental conditions.

Abstract

In this study we apply electron tomography of dislocations to quartz with a view to assess whether the von Mises-Taylor criterion is satisfied or violated in a deformed crystal of quartz. We propose a method to perform electron tomography with few projected images which allows extension of this technique to beam-sensitive materials such as quartz. The 3D characterization of the dislocation microstructure allows the evaluation of contributions to dislocation mobility with no ambiguity. From the geometrical characteristics of the dislocations and their Burgers vectors, we show how to identify the non-zero components of the strain tensor. We show that in the quartz grain investigated, the von-Mises-Taylor criterion is satisfied thanks to the climb of 〈c + a〉 dislocations. Abstract

After laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) of an ultra-strong in situ TiC whisker reinforced β-Ti composite, this paper investigates the evolution of microstructure and mechanical properties in response to heat treatment at different temperatures. Using in depth nano-SEM and TEM analyses, it is shown that ageing at 400 °C rounds the whiskers, annihilates the strain fields and grows Mo segregated nano-cells, but without improving the ductility. In contrast, ageing at 600 °C enables the transformation of metastable β to a lamellar β + α, leading to a dual phase matrix embedding TiC particles. This is in such a manner that extra ageing at 600 °C coalesces the nano-lamellar α + β microstructure to form a coarser micro-lamellar α + β matrix. This microstructure achieves 66 % of the compressive deformation of Cp-Ti, and over 1400 MPa compressive strength after 1 h of ageing at 600 °C. Despite this success under compression, hard and stiff TiC particles may still cause large spherical fractured voids, severely limiting the plastic deformation under tension. Abstract

International audience; A methodology is proposed for the design of sampled-data fixed-order decentralised controllers for Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) Linear Time-Invariant (LTI) time-delay systems. Imperfections in the communications links between continuous-time plants ans controllers arising due to transmission time-delay, aperiodic sampling, and asynchronous sensors ans actuators are considered. We model the errors induced due to the control imperfections using an operator approach leading to a simple $L2$, stability criterion. A frequency domain-based direct optimisation approach towards controller desing is proposed in thir paper. This approach relies on the minimisation of cost functions, for stability and robustness against control imperfections, as a function of the controller or design parameters. First, the proposed method towards controller design is applied to generic MIMO LTI systems with time-delay. Second, when the delay system to be controlled has the structure of a network of coupled quasi-identical subsystems, we use a scalable algorithm to design identical decentralised controllers through network structure exploitation. Quasi-identical subsystems are identical subsystems that have non-identical uncertainties or control imperfections. By exploiting the structure, we improve the computational efficiency and scalability with the number of subsystems. The methodology has been implemented in a publicly available software, which supports system models in terms of delay differential algebraic equations. Finally, the effectiveness of the methodology is illustrated using a numerical example.

Abstract

Plastics of different sizes (micro- and nano-sized) are often identified in aquatic environments. Nevertheless, their influence on marine organisms has not been widely investigated. In this study, the responses of the microalga Chlorella vulgaris to micro- and nanoplastics exposure were examined using long term toxicity test. The plastics tested were carboxyl-functionalized and non-functionalized polystyrene of 20, 50 and 500 nm in diameter. A reduction in algal cell viability and chlorophyll a concentration has been observed after exposure to the small sizes (20 and 50 nm) of plastics. Lactate dehydrogenase activity and reactive oxygen species concentration/production were significantly higher after exposure to the 20 nm nanoplastics than that of control confirming the stress condition. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy analysis proved the attachment of nanoplastics to microalgae and rearrangement of extracellular polymeric substances. The cellular stress appeared as increased cell size, deformed cell wall and increased volume of starch grains.

International audience; This article reviews the principles and applications of the phase field technique for modeling phase transformations and microstructural evolutions, with an emphasis on solid-solid transformations. Conventional phase field models, which rely on phenomenological thermodynamic and kinetic descriptions, are first presented and examples of application are discussed. Then, applications of the phase field method to phenomena induced by irradiation are reviewed, including radiation-enhanced and radiation-induced segregation and precipitation on sinks such as grain boundaries, dislocation and dislocation loops, the dynamical stabilization of compositional patterns and void lattices and the disordering of ordered precipitates.

Under the LPWAN broad term are a variety of technologies enabling power efficient wireless communication over very long distances. For instance, technologies based on ultra-narrow band modulation (UNB)–for example SigFox–or Chirp Spread Spectrum modulation (CSS)–for example LoRa–have become de facto standards in the IoT ecosystem. Given the incredible worldwide uptake of LPWAN networks for a large variety of innovative IoT applications, including multimedia sensors, it is important to understand the challenges behind large scale and dense LPWAN deployment, especially because both Sigfox and LoRa networks are currently deployed in unlicensed bands. This situation is most likely not going to change, at least in the next few years, as working in the unlicensed band allows for a much quicker uptake of the technology. This chapter has a particular focus on LoRa technology as it can be deployed in a private and ad-hoc manner, making experimental deployments much easier. Existing studies on LoRa scalability and radio channel access mechanisms for LoRa LPWAN will be reviewed and promising approaches will be presented in more details. The chapter will also provide to the readers useful information on the LoRa physical layer, as well as on promising interference mitigation techniques that can be applied such as capture effect and successive interference cancellation. The chapter will also give a large part on experimental results based on real-world deployments of both IoT test-beds and IoT production networks in the context of 3 R&D projects (2 EU H2020 projects–WAZIUP & WAZIHUB–and 1 national ANR project–PERSEPTEUR).

Abstract

The presence of trap states in self-switching diodes (SSD) based on an AlGaN/GaN heterojunction has been identified by means of their AC characterization between 75 kHz to 30 MHz in a wide temperature range, from 80 K to 300 K. Measurements allow us to determine two different characteristic energies of the traps, 12 meV and 61 meV, being associated to a distribution of surface states and one discrete bulk trap, respectively. The impact of the trapping effects on microwave detection at zero-bias has also been analyzed in the same temperature range, the measured responsivity showing an unusual enhancement and a low-frequency roll-off at low temperatures., Spanish MINECO and FEDER through project TEC2017-83910-R and Junta de Castilla y León and FEDER through project SA254P18

Abstract

International audience; During the operation of Claw Pole (CP) machines, and for some operating loads, the magnetic core temperature can reach 180°C in some hot spots. As a consequence, the core electromagnetic properties may considerably change, impacting the machine performances. In such a case, a deep knowledge of the electromagnetic behavior as a function of the temperature is required. In this work, we present a dedicated study of the CP rotor made of a forged magnetic steel. In fact, the CP magnetic properties heterogeneity and the claw shape made it necessary to extract specific samples that are characterized with a miniaturized Single Sheet Tester (SST). To that end, this work proposes a specific methodology to characterize the electromagnetic properties of the CP rotor material as a function of the temperature in order to better predict the machine electrical performances, especially regarding the iron losses.

Abstract

Nano-crystalline synthetic gismondine modified via cation exchange has been utilised as a highly active and selective catalyst for the production of biofuel. In comparison with low silica zeolites FAU and LTA, K-form of gismondine, based on the maximum aluminium P (MAP) zeolite, exhibited a significant improvement in catalytic performance in the methanolysis of bio-oil, which can be attributed to its nano-particle morphology and high basicity associated with the high Al content and high degree of ion exchange, as demonstrated by the TEM, XRD, TGA, NMR, XPS and CO2-TPD studies. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report on a successful catalytic application of basic K-MAP zeolite. Abstract

Some micromechanics-based constitutive models are presented in this study for porous geomaterials. These micro-macro mechanical models focus on the effect of porosity and the inclusions on the macroscopic elastoplastic behaviors of porous materials. In order to consider the effect of pores and the compressibility of the matrix, some macroscopic criteria are presented firstly for ductile porous medium having one population of pores with different types of matrix (von Mises, Green type, Mises–Schleicher and Drucker–Prager). Based on different homogenization techniques, these models are extended to the double porous materials with two populations of pores at different scales and a Drucker–Prager solid phase at the microscale. Based on these macroscopic criteria, complete constitutive models are formulated and implemented to describe the overall responses of typical porous geomaterials (sandstone, porous chalk and argillite). Comparisons between the numerical predictions and experimental data with different confining pressures or different mineralogical composites show the capabilities of these micromechanics-based models, which take into account the effects of microstructure on the macroscopic behavior and significantly improve the phenomenological ones.

Abstract

We focus on a problem of locating recharging stations in one-way station based electric car sharing systems which operate under demand uncertainty. We model this problem as a mixed integer stochastic program and develop a Benders decomposition algorithm based on this formulation. We integrate a stabilization procedure to our algorithm and conduct a large-scale experimental study on our methods. To conduct the computational experiments, we develop a demand forecasting method allowing to generate many demand scenarios. The method is applied to real data from Manhattan taxi trips. Abstract

International audience; This paper addresses the design of the elastic structure of artificial wings to optimize their dynamical behaviour to reproduce insect wings kinematics. Our bioinspired kinematics is based on the original concept of using the resonant properties of the wing structure in order to combine the motion of two vibration modes, a flapping and a twisting mode, in a quadrature phase shift. Oneway of achieving this particular combination is to optimize the geometry and elastic characteristics of the flexible structure such that the two modes are successive in the eigenspectrum and close in frequency. This paper first proposes a semi-analytical model, based on assembled Euler-Bernoulli beams, to understand, compute and optimize the artificial wing dynamic vibrations. Then, using this model, it is shown that it is possible to obtain several artificial wing structures with a flapping and a twisting mode close in frequency. Finally, experimental validations are performed on micromachined insect-sized prototypes to validatethe model and the concept.

Thereby, trends towards gear shifting automation motivate the research on replacing a discrete conventional Automated Manual Transmission (AMT) with a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT). Theoretically, such a transmission enables better operation points of the thermal engine, and therefore a reduction of its fuel consumption and emissions. However, the conventional (hydraulic actuated) CVT efficiency during quasi-stationary operation is typically lower than the efficiency of a classical discrete gearbox, which leads to higher fuel consumption. This paper is focused on the study of the interests of a CVT for a medium-duty Hybrid Electric Truck (HET). The complete model and control of CVT-based and AMT-based HET are described in a unified way using Energetic Macroscopic Representation (EMR). These models are transformed to backward-models to be computed by the Dynamic Programming Method (DPM). Such a method leads to define the (off-line) optimal energy management strategies for a fair comparison of both hybrid trucks. For the studied driving cycle, the hybridization allows a fuel saving of 10% with an AMT and 3% with a CVT. The fuel consumption is higher for the CVT-based HET in comparison with the AMT-based HET due to the lowest efficiency of the CVT (85%) compared to the AMT (around 92%). However, future (on-demand) CVTs with an increased efficiency could be a solution of interest to reduce the fuel consumption of such applications. The developed method can be used to test these new CVTs, other vehicles or other driving cycles.

Abstract

International audience; Strontium and tantalum based oxynitride perovskite thin films were deposited by reactive magnetron sputtering. Epitaxial films deposited on Nb-SrTiO3 substrates show smooth surfaces with roughness values from 1.5 to 3.6 nm for a thickness of films in the range 20–1600 nm. The samples are yellow with band gap values around 2.35 eV. Piezo-force microscopy characterization pointed out the local piezoelectric and ferroelectric behavior of the oxynitride perovskite films. In the low frequency range, the 1600 nm-thick film exhibits a permittivity of 175 at 10 kHz, with dielectric losses of 0.055. Permittivity is lowered in high frequencies with a value around 65 obtained on a 1520 nm-thick film deposited on MgO substrate, which is textured with a preferential c-axis orientation. No accordability of the permittivity was highlighted at a macroscopic scale. The moderate crystallographic strain evidenced in the 20 nm thin film does not induce a high permittivity

Abstract

International audience; Volatile productions and consumptions generate a stochastic behavior of distribution grids and make its supervision difficult to achieve. Usually, the Distributed Generators reactive powers are adjusted to perform decentralized voltage control. Industrial controllers are generally equipped with a local affine feedback law, which settings are tuned at early stage using local data. A centralized and more efficient tuning method should aim to maximize the probability that all the node voltages of distribution grids remain within prescribed bounds. When the characteristics of the stochastic power forecasts are known, the centralized algorithm allows to update the settings on a regular time basis. However, the method requires to solve stochastic optimization problem. Assuming that stochastic variables have Gaussian distributions, a procedure is given which guarantees the convergence of the stochastic optimization. Convex problems drastically reduce the difficulty and the computational time required to reach the global minimum, compared to nonconvex optimal power flow problems. The linear controllers with optimized parameters are compared to traditional control laws using simulations of a real distribution grid model. The results show that the algorithm is reliable and moreover fast enough. Hence, the proposed method can be used to update periodically the control parameters.

Abstract

International audience; Predominant in today society, mobile apps are rising as promising application systems for automatic control. An app can be viewed as a plant, processing input signals (queries, phone data, etc.) and generating outputs (such as a service or an answer). Guaranteeing that the app complies with a desired behavior is a major safety challenge. This work focuses on privacy issues for geolocated mobile apps. Many applications use the location data to provide a service (e.g., navigation, fitness) or to improve it (e.g., weather forecast, social media). This gain in service utility comes at the cost of personal data sharing. Such threat to user privacy can be leveraged by protection mechanisms, e.g., addition of noise to the location data. However, state-of-the-art techniques still lack means of ensuring both data utility and privacy in a dynamics utilization context. This paper presents the first non-linear analytical modeling followed by a control formulation for regulating the privacy level in a mobile app. The privacy is sensed using the well established notion of Point of Interest. Through modeling, we highlight the control challenges, namely the non-linearity and time-variance of the plant, its high sensibility to noise and the impact of the user's mobility pattern-seen a disturbance. A controller is designed, combining feedback with anticipation action. Evaluation is performed using mobility records from two real-world multi-users datasets. Our approach enables, with a unique and universal tuning, to robustly meet privacy objectives with preserved utility and negligible computational overhead. Control algorithm, experimental evaluation and analysis scripts are available online for reproducibility.

Abstract

International audience; This study focus on the minimum duration of training data required for PV generation forecast. In order to investigate this issue, the study is implemented on 2 PV installations: the first one in Guadeloupe represented for tropical climate, the second in Lille represented for temperate climate; using 3 different forecast models: the Scaled Persistence Model, the Artificial Neural Network and the Multivariate Polynomial Model. The usual statistical forecasting error indicators: NMBE, NMAE and NRMSE are computed in order to compare the accuracy of forecasts. The results show that with the temperate climate such as Lille, a longer training duration is needed. However, once the model is trained, the performance is better.

Abstract

This paper reports on direct amination of hydrogen-terminated polycrystalline boron doped electrode. The technique consists of NH3 plasma treatment of hydrogenated diamond substrate to generate surface terminal amino groups. The aminated diamond surface was further investigated for its ability to bind gold nanoparticles. Homogeneous and well-distributed gold nanoparticles were obtained by simple exposure of the amine-terminated surface to an aqueous solution of gold colloid. The resulting surfaces were characterized using X-ray spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and cyclic voltammetry (CV). The presence of gold nanoparticles led to more reversible electron transfer process on the modified electrode. A zonotopic outer approximation of the state estimation domain is computed and a new criterion is proposed to reduce the size of the zonotope at each sample time. The zonotopic set-membership estimator design for switched systems is provided within the LMI framework. The extension of the proposed scheme to deal with unknown inputs is also presented. An application to vehicle lateral dynamics state estimation is provided. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm and highlight its advantages over the existing methods.

International audience; In the current nano-sized material revolution, the main limitations to a large-scale deployment of nanomaterials involve health concerns related to nano-dissemination via air. Developing new chemical routes benefiting from nano-size advantages while avoiding their hazards could overcome these limitations. Addressing this need, a chemical route leading to soft nano-particle agglomerates, i.e., macroscopic precursors presenting the ability to be decomposed into nano-sized materials, was developed and applied to Ce0.8Gd0.2O2−δ. Using cerium/gadolinium-loaded ion exchange resin, the Ce0.8Gd0.2O2−δ solid solution formation as a function of temperature was studied in-situ through X-ray diffraction, X-ray absorption spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy. Temperatures corresponding to the organic skeleton decomposition and to the mixed oxide crystallization were identified. An optimal heat treatment, leading to nanostructured soft agglomerates, was established. Microsphere processing capabilities were evaluated and particle size distribution measurements were recorded. A very low fracture strength was calculated, and a nanometric particle size distribution (170 nm) was determined.

Abstract

Nowadays, particulate matter emitted by vehicles severely impacts environmental quality and human health. In this paper, the potential benefits of Ethanol Direct Injection (EDI) timing and pressure on particulate emission characteristics in a Dual-Fuel Spark Ignition (DFSI) engine were initially and systematically explored. The experimental results illustrate that by delaying EDI timing from -340 ºCA to -300 ºCA, there is a significant benefit in both particulate number and mass concentration. Furthermore, the size distribution curve of particulate number changes from bimodal to unimodal, meantime size distribution curves of particulate mass consistently concentrate on the accumulation mode. By increasing EDI pressure from 5.5 MPa to 18 MPa, the droplet size of ethanol spray can be effectively reduced. The benefit of increasing EDI pressure is more apparent in reducing particulate number is than particulate mass. The concentration of number and mass for total particulates have a reduction of 51.15% and 22.64%, respectively. In summary, it was demonstrated that an appropriate EDI timing or high EDI pressure could be a practical and efficient way to reduce particulate emissions in a DFSI engine.

Abstract

International audience; This paper discusses the use of an existing adaptive predictive controller to control some Shape Memory Alloy (SMA) linear actuators. The model consists in a truncated linear combination of Laguerre filters identified online. The controller stability is studied in details. It is proven that the tracking error is asymptotically stable under some conditions on the modelling error. Moreover, the tracking error converge toward zero for step references, even if the identified model is inaccurate. Experimentalcresults obtained on two different kind of actuator validate the proposed control. They also show that it is robust with regard to input constraints.

International audience; The conserved Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equation can be considered as the one- and twodimensional evolution equation for amorphous thin film growth. The role of the nonlinear term Dojruj2THORN and the properties of the solutions are investigated analytically and numerically. Analytical results of wavelength and amplitude are provided. Numerical simulations of this equation are presented, showing the roughening and coarsening of the surface pattern and the evolution of the surface morphology over time for different parameter values in one- and two-dimensions. Abstract

International audience; We describe here a new synthesis route for the direct and controlled precipitation of monodispersed nanometric LiMO2 (M = Co, Fe) powders in alcoholic media tackling the difficulty to simultaneously hydrolyze lithium and transition metal ions in aqueous medium. Combining results from XRD, Raman, TEM, TGA analyses, we found that the alcohol nature as well as the absolute and relative Li+ and Mn+ concentrations are important parameters controlling the formation of such materials. These parameters can be reliably tuned and influence the phase purity, crystallite sizes and Li/M stoichiometry for both HT-“LiCoO2” and α-“LiFeO2” type materials. The optimization and rationalization of this synthetic route appear as a very promising tool to prepare well controlled/characterized oxides to further study the interrelationships between structural, chemical and reactivity issues as a function of the crystallite size, as suggested by some of the present results.

Abstract

The industrial zones are increasingly invaded by groups of mobile robots that are the most capable to perform complex tasks by collaborating and cooperating together. The operation of a mobile robot within a dynamic and high-risk environment with strong interaction between robot-robot and human-robot is of a certain complexity of control and safety. Such type of systems requires a safety and hazard investigation to verify if it is able to operate under certain operating conditions, while still ensuring the control and collaboration between mobile robots and human. This paper presents an approach that combines aspects of System-Theoretic Process Analysis (STPA) and Bowtie for safety assessment purposes. The approach we propose is used for a case related to multi-robot systems considering the coordinating, cooperating and collaborating aspects. At first, a risk identification study is done using STPA to extract a set of risk scenarios related to different types of hierarchical coordination architectures in addition to their factors. Afterward, an evaluation of the obtained scenarios is performed by the Bowtie method. The aim of our study is to better compare different control approaches of a multi-agent system. The combination offers detailed hazard identification. It further provides a classification of risks which helps to improve STPA outcomes thus facilitate decision-making over the suitable approach. 2020 The Authors. Abstract

International audience; New insights into reaction mechanism for catalytic methane combustion are provided in broad operating conditions on Pd/La0.7MnO3 as model natural gas vehicle catalyst. Under lean and dry conditions, a dual mechanism is suggested with active sites combining reactive oxygen species from La0.7MnO3 and palladium instead of single site reaction mechanism. Aging in wet atmosphere has no consequence on the kinetic behavior. On the other hand, in wet atmosphere near the stoichiometry, strong accumulation of hydroxyl groups on the support would suppress the metal-support interface. Accordingly, methane combustion would take place only on Pd particles.

Abstract

International audience; To decrease even eliminate Carbon Dioxide (CO2) emissions for mitigating global warming, various technologies are being developed on combustion engines. In the research presented in this paper, a numerical investigation of Oxy-Fuel Combustion (OFC) technology on an ethanol-gasoline Dual-Fuel Spark Ignition (DFSI) engine under economical oxygen consumption at low and mid-high loads was performed by one-dimensional computer simulation. It is demonstrated that under OFC mode without other optimisation, Brake Mean Effective Pressure (BMEP) can meet the requirement at mid-high load, but it has a considerable decline at low load compared to Conventional Air Combustion (CAC) mode. Moreover, there is a considerable deterioration in Brake Specific Fuel Consumption (BSFC) compared to that of CAC mode. A practical method is proposed to optimise the DFSI engine performance under OFC mode by changing intake charge components and utilising appropriate Water Injection (WI) strategies. BMEP increases approximately 0.05 bar at low load. BSFC has a reduction of 3.35% and 1.82% at low load and mid-high load, respectively.

Abstract

In the frame of the long-wavelength Heisenberg model, the magnonic band structures and transmission spectra of asymmetric serial loop structures (ASLS), made of asymmetric loops pasted together with segments of finite length, are examined theoretically. These monomode structures, composed of one-dimensional ferromagnetic materials, may exhibit large stop bands where the propagation of spin waves is forbidden. The width of these band gaps depends on the geometrical parameters of the structure and may be drastically increased in a tandem geometry made of several successive ASLS which differ by their geometrical characteristics. These ASLS's may have potential applications in spin-injection devices.
