Chemical investigation of the leaves of Manniophyton fulvum led to the isolation of seven flavonoid glycosides: myricetin-3-O-β-Dd-rhamnoside (1), kaempferol-3-O-β-d-rhamnoside (2), quercetin-3-O-β-d-glucoside (3), quercetin-3-O-β-d-rhamnoside (4), quercetin-3-O-β-d-galactoside (5), rutin (6) and quercetin (7). The structures of the compounds were established by spectroscopic analyses as well as by comparison with published data. Some of the compounds showed strong antioxidant activity which validates the traditional use of the plant. An attempted correlation between the computed HOMO-LUMO energies and the measured antioxidant activities was established. We have also estimated the cardiotoxicity of the compounds by calculating the predicted logarithm of the human Ether-`a-go-go Related Gene (loghERG) using the QikProp program. These purified flavonoids are new potential lead compounds for the development of antioxidant drugs.

Single-atom catalysts (SACs) with active metals dispersed atomically have shown great potential in heterogeneous catalysis due to the high atomic utilization and superior selectivity/stability. Synthesis of SACs using carbon-neutral biomass and its components as the feedstocks provides a promising strategy to realize the sustainable and cost-effective SACs preparation as well as the valorization of underused biomass resources. Herein, we begin by describing the general background and status quo of carbon-based SACs derived from biomass. A detailed enumeration of the common biomass feedstocks (e.g., lignin, cellulose, chitosan, etc.) for the SACs preparation is then offered. The interactions between metal atoms and biomass-derived carbon carriers are summarized to give general rules on how to stabilize the atomic metal centers and rationalize porous carbon structures. Furthermore, the widespread adoption of catalysts in diverse domains (e.g., chemocatalysis, electrocatalysis and photocatalysis, etc.) is comprehensively introduced. The structure-property relationships and the underlying catalytic mechanisms are also addressed, including the influences of metal sites on the activity and stability, and the impact of the unique structure of single-atom centers modulated by metal/biomass feedstocks interactions on catalytic activity and selectivity. Finally, we end this review with a look into the remaining challenges and future perspectives of biomass-based SACs. The rapid progress in flexible electronic devices has necessitated continual research into nanomaterials, structural design, and fabrication processes. One-dimensional nanowires, characterized by their distinct structures and exceptional properties, are considered essential components for various flexible electronic devices. Considerable attention has been directed toward the assembly of nanowires, which presents significant advantages. Printing and coating techniques can be used to assemble nanowires in a relatively simple, efficient, and cost-competitive manner and exhibit potential for scale-up production in the foreseeable future. This review aims to provide an overview of nanowire assembly using printing and coating techniques, such as bar coating, spray coating, dip coating, blade coating, 3D printing, and so forth. The application of assembled nanowires in flexible electronic devices is subsequently discussed. Droplet deposition on deformable matrix has a broad application prospect. Regular deposition and diffusion of droplet on the substrate is the key to prepare flexible concave structure. Direct writing technique is an advanced method for depositing ink droplet on various substrates, which could produce a variety of deposition forms. Meanwhile, direct writing technique has the characteristics of simplicity, convenience and strong controllability. In this work, patterned concave structure was fabricated with viscoelastic substrate by direct writing technology, depositing behavior of ink droplet, formation condition and shape control of concave structure were studied with viscoelastic substrate, and practical application of the patterned concave structure was explored in loading and releasing liquid on skin surface. In recent years, flexible devices have gained rapid development with great potential in daily life. As the core component of wearable devices, flexible tactile sensors are prized for their excellent properties such as lightweight, stretchable and foldable. Consequently, numerous high-performance sensors have been developed, along with an array of innovative fabrication processes. It has been recognized that the improvement of the single performance index for flexible tactile sensors is not enough for practical sensing applications. Therefore, balancing and optimization of overall performance of the sensor are extensively anticipated. Furthermore, new functional characteristics are required for practical applications, such as freeze resistance, corrosion resistance, self-cleaning, and degradability. From a bionic perspective, the overall performance of a sensor can be optimized by constructing bionic microstructures which can deliver additional functional features. This review briefly summarizes the latest developments in bionic microstructures for different types of tactile sensors and critically analyzes the sensing performance of fabricated flexible tactile sensors. Polysaccharides, due to their remarkable features, have gained significant prominence in the sustainable production of nanoparticles (NPs). High market demand and minimal production cost, compared to the chemically synthesised NPs, demonstrate a drive towards polysaccharide-based nanoparticles (PSNPs) benign to environment. Various approaches are used for the synthesis of PSNPs including cross-linking, polyelectrolyte complexation, and self-assembly. PSNPs have the potential to replace a wide diversity of chemical-based agents within the food, health, medical and pharmacy sectors. Nevertheless, the considerable challenges associated with optimising the characteristics of PSNPs to meet specific targeting applications are of utmost importance. This review provides a detailed compilation of recent accomplishments in the synthesis of PSNPs, the fundamental principles and critical factors that govern their rational fabrication, as well as various characterisation techniques. Noteworthy, the multiple use of PSNPs in different disciplines such as biomedical, cosmetics agrochemicals, energy storage, water detoxification, and food-related realms, is accounted in detail. Insights into the toxicological impacts of the PSNPs and their possible risks to human health are addressed, and efforts made in terms of PSNPs development and optimising strategies that allow for enhanced delivery are highlighted. Biocompatible coatings that can protect metal implants have great potential in tissue engineering. In this work, MWCNT/chitosan composite coatings with hydrophobic-hydrophilic asymmetric wettability were facilely prepared by one-step in situ electrodeposition. The resultant composite coating exhibits excellent thermal stability and mechanical strength (0.76 MPa), benefiting from the compact internal structure. The thickness of the coating can be controlled precisely by the amounts of transferred charges. The MWCNT/chitosan composite coating demonstrates a lower corrosion rate due to its hydrophobicity and compact internal structure. Compared with exposed 316 L stainless steel, its corrosion rate is reduced by two orders of magnitude from 3.004 × 10 -1 mm/yr to 5.361 × 10 -3 mm/yr. The content of iron released from 316 L stainless steel into the simulated body fluid drops to 0.1 mg/L under the protection of the composite coating. In addition, the composite coating enables efficient calcium enrichment from simulated body fluids and promotes the formation of bioapatite layers on the coating surface. Kitchen-waste-derived biochar (KBC) was produced by thermal treatment at 400 °C, and a series of KBC/BiOX (X = Br, Cl) photocatalysts were developed using ultrasonication and solvothermal treatment. The as-prepared photocatalysts were characterized by several tests and investigated by photocatalytic reactions towards methyl orange (MO) and tetracycline (TC). The best photocatalysts, 0.15KBC/BiOBr and 0.15KBC/BiOCl separately achieved complete MO photodegradation in 20 min and 35 min. Further study confirmed that 0.15KBC/BiOBr and 0.15KBC/BiOCl possessed excellent photocatalytic efficiency that was 17.9 and 14.8 times higher than BiOBr and BiOCl, respectively. In addition, 0.15KBC/BiOX showed higher activity removal of TC than pure BiOX in 60 min. Notably, 0.15KBC/BiOX maintained a reproducible high photocatalytic efficiency after five recycles. Estimated band gap energy for 0.15KBC/BiOBr (2.40 eV) and 0.15KBC/BiOCl (3.00 eV) was considerably lower than that of BiOBr (2.73 eV) and BiOCl (3.30 eV), indicating a delocalized state was created when forming electronic pathways on the interface. Besides, visible-light harvesting of photocatalysts got promoted by the modification of KBC. Active species trapping experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) tests illustrated that photogenerated holes were the principal active species, while ∙OH was involved in the reaction. Conductive hydrogels have attracted significant attention as a promising material in electrical and biomedical fields. However, the simultaneous realization of good conductivity, toughness, high tissue adhesiveness, excellent biocompatibility, and extreme environmental tolerance remains a challenge. Inspired by the antifreezing/antiheating behavior of natural plants, a calcium chloride/TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nanofiber-dopamine/ polyacrylamide (CaCl 2 /TOCNF-DOPA/PAM) glycerol/water organohydrogel with antifreezing and antiheating properties, good transparency, conductivity, stability, excellent biocompatibility, mechanical properties, and tissue adhesiveness was fabricated. The organohydrogel has about 700% stretchability, with about 90% transparency. The organohydrogel exhibits good conductivity of 4.9 × 10 -4 S/cm and high tissue adhesiveness of 50 kPa, which can monitor various human activities. The organohydrogel displays excellent extreme environmental tolerance to maintain the conductivity and mechanical properties under an extremely wide temperature range (-24 to 50 °C) for a long period due to its water-locking effect between glycerol and water molecules. The biocompatible organohydrogel is able to protect the skin from frostbite or burns in harsh environments. Wearing surgical masks remains the most effective protective measure against COVID-19 before mass vaccination, but insufficient comfortability and low antibacterial/antiviral activities accelerate the replacement frequency of surgical masks, resulting in large amounts of medical waste. To solve this problem, we report new nanofiber membrane masks with outstanding comfortability and anti-pathogen functionality prepared using fluorinated carbon nanofibers/carbon fiber (F-CNFs/CF). This was used to replace commercial polypropylene (PP) nonwovens as the core layer of face masks. The through-plane and in-plane thermal conductivity of commercial PP nonwovens were only 0.12 and 0.20 W/m K, but the F-CNFs/CF nanofiber membranes reached 0.62 and 5.23 W/m K, which represent enhancements of 380% and 2523%, respectively. The surface temperature of the PP surgical masks was 23.9 ℃ when the wearing time was 15 min, while the F-CNFs/CF nanocomposite fibrous masks reached 27.3 ℃, displaying stronger heat dissipation. Moreover, the F-CNFs/CF nanofiber membranes displayed excellent electrical conductivity and produced a high-temperature layer that killed viruses and bacteria in the masks. The surface temperature of the F-CNFs/CF nanocomposite fibrous masks reached 69.2 ℃ after being connected to a portable power source for 60 s. The negative consequences, such as healthy and environmental issues, brought by rapid urbanization and interactive human activities result in increasing social uncertainties, unreliable predictions, and poor management decisions. For instance, the Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) occurred in 2019 has been plaguing many countries. Aiming at controlling the spread of COVID-19, countries around the world have adopted various mitigation and suppression strategies. However, how to comprehensively eva luate different mitigation strategies remains unexplored. To this end, based on the Artificial societies, Computational experiments, Parallel execution (ACP) approach, we proposed a system model, which clarifies the process to collect the necessary data and conduct large-scale computational experiments to evaluate the effectiveness of different mitigation strategies. Specifically, we established an artificial society of Wuhan city through geo-environment modeling, population modeling, contact behavior modeling, disease spread modeling and mitigation strategy modeling. Moreover, we established an evaluation model in terms of the control effects and economic costs of the mitigation strategy. With respect to the control effects, it is directly reflected by indicators such as the cumulative number of diseases and deaths, while the relationship between mitigation strategies and economic costs is built based on the CO 2 emission. Finally, large-scale simulation experiments are conducted to evaluate the mitigation strategies of six countries. Baicalin, a phenolic glycoside with good lipid-lowering activity, has poor intestinal absorption due to low lipophilicity. In this study, six ester derivatives of baicalin, named BECn (n = 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, and 10) based on their fatty chain lengths, were synthesized by whole-cell catalyzed esterification to improve lipophilicity, and the intestinal absorption and lipid-lowering activity of the synthesized esters were investigated using cell models in vitro. BEC2, BEC3, and BEC4 exhibited higher P app values than baicalin in Caco-2 cell monolayers. The lipid-lowering activity of the three esters was stronger than baicalin in the cell models of hepatic steatosis, adipocytes and foam macrophages, and was attributed to their higher intracellular accumulation and stronger direct activation of the carnitine palmitoyltransferase 1A. Moreover, these esters were easily hydrolyzed by carboxylesterase and were unstable at pH 7.4, which significantly weakened their absorption and lipid-lowering activity. In this work, biocompatible, antimicrobial, and antiviral nanocomposites were prepared through two steps. In the first step, periodate oxidation of cellulose was performed to get dialdehyde cellulose (DAC). The second step included the reaction of DAC with sulfur-containing amino acids included Cysteine (Cys) and Methionine (Meth) in the presence of graphene oxide (GO). The prepared nanocomposites were characterized via FT-IR, SEM, TEM, and TGA. Antimicrobial and antiviral activities for all designed nanocomposites besides DAC were carried out. Both DAC/GO/Cys and DAC/GO/Meth exhibited a promising antimicrobial activity against Gram-negative (E. coli and P. aeruginosa), Gram-positive (B. subtilis and S. aureus), and unicellular fungi (C. Albicans and C. neoformans), while the DAC/GO/Cys/Meth nanocomposite was the lowest. Moreover, all designed nanocomposites have a strong antiviral activity against Herpes simplex virus 1(HSV-1) at minimum nontoxic concentration. Additionally, Computational procedures and Molecular docking showed the reactivity and stability of the molecules that have biological activity against Gram-positive, Gram-negative, and HSV-1. N 2 O is the most significant anthropogenic greenhouse gas, which cause the ozone depletion. Hence, the room temperature detection of N 2 O is highly desirable. In this work, The TCN(II)-KOH-rGO/CF modified electrode was successfully fabricated by drop coating method. The synthesized electrode was successfully characterized by SEM, TEM, FT-IR and XRD. The sensor electrode was used to detect different N 2 O concentration in flow conditions at room temperature. TCN(II)-KOH-rGO/CF modified electrode showed high sensitivity towards N 2 O, a wide range from 1ppm to 16 ppm and low detection of 1 ppm N 2 O were achieved for the TCN(II)-KOH-rGO/CF modified electrode. The limit of detection and the response towards this nitrogen oxide is competitive to other sensing methods. In addition, the sensitivity of the electrochemical sensor electrode was compared with the online Gas Chromatography. Additionally, the selectivity of the working electrode was analyzed and specified. The working electrode stability was analyzed for more than 30 days shows good stability. The fabricated TCN(II)-KOH-rGO/CF electrode is easier to prepare to get excellent analytical performance towards N 2 O. In the present research work, 2D-Porous NiO decorated graphene nanocomposite was synthesized by hydrothermal method to monitored the concentration of epinephrine (EPI). The morphology (SEM and TEM) results confirmed 2D-Porous NiO nanoparticles firmly attached over graphene nanosheets. FTIR and XPS analysis confirmed the formation of nickel oxide formation and complete reduction of GO to rGO. The electrochemical activity of the proposed NiO-rGO/GCE modified electrode on epinephrine was analyzed by simple cyclic voltammetry technique. The proposed low cost NiO-rGO/GCE modified electrode showed excellent catalytic activity over GCE and rGO/GCE electrodes. Due to its high conductivity and charge transfer ability of the NiO-rGO/GCE modified electrode exhibited high sensitivity of EPI at optimized conditions. The anodic peak current of the EPI linearly increases with increasing the concertation of EPI. A wide linear range (50 μM-1000 μM) was achieved with high correlation coefficient (R 2  = 0.9986) and the limit of detection (LOD) of NiO-rGO/GCE modified electrode was calculated to be 10 μM. NiO-rGO/GCE electrode showed good stability and repeatability towards the EPI oxidation. Mainly, the proposed NiO-rGO/GCE modified electrode showed good sensitivity of EPI in the human biological fluid with high recovery percentage. Given the high content of Ca 2+ in waste paper recycling wastewater, the anaerobic granular sludge (AnGS) undergoes calcification during wastewater treatment and affects the treatment efficiency. To restore the activity of calcified AnGS and improve the performance of AnGS, four types of N-acyl-homoserine lactones (AHLs) were added to the AnGS system while papermaking wastewater treatment. The addition of N-butyryl-DL-homoserine lactone(C4-HSL) and N-octanoyl-DL-homoserine lactone (C8-HSL) had an inhibitory affect the COD removal efficiency and SMA of sludge at the inception. The addition of N-hexanoyl-L-homoserine lactone (C6-HSL) has no obvious effect on the COD removal efficiency, but can improve the SMA of sludge more obviously. The addition of N-(β-ketocaproyl)-DL-homoserine lactone (3O-C6-HSL) can increased COD removal efficiency and promoted SMA together obviously. The addition of C6-HSL and 3O-C6-HSL can increase volatile suspended solid (VSS)/total suspended solid (TSS), and regulate extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) secretion in AnGS. Analysis of microbial sequencing revealed changes in the microbial community structure following AHL addition, which enhanced the methane metabolism pathway in sludge. The addition of C6-HSL, C8-HSL, and 3O-C6-HSL increased Methanosaeta population, thus increasing the aceticlastic pathway in sludge. Humidity sensors have been widely used for humidity monitoring in industrial fields. However, the application of conventional sensors is limited due to the structural rigidity, high cost, and time-consuming integration process. Owing to the good hydrophilicity, biodegradability, and low cost of cellulose, the sensors built on cellulose bulk materials are considered a feasible method to overcome these drawbacks while providing reasonable performance. Herein, we design a flexible paper-based humidity sensor based on conductive 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl (TEMPO)-oxidized cellulose fibers/carbon nanotubes (TOCFs/CNTs) conformal fibers network. The CNTs are dispersed by cationic cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB), which introduces positive charges on the CNTs surface. The conductive fibers are achieved by an electrostatic self-assembly process that positively charged CNTs are adsorbed to the surface of negatively charged TOCFs. The vast number of hydrophilic hydroxyl groups on the surface of TOCFs provide more water molecules adsorption sites and facilitate the electron transfer from water molecules to CNTs, endowing the sensor with an excellent humidity responsive property. Besides, the swelling of the TOCFs greatly damages the conductive CNTs network and further promotes the humidity sensitive performance of the sensor. Benefiting from the unique structure, the obtained sensor exhibits a maximum response value of 87.0% ( ΔI/I 0 , and the response limit is 100%), outstanding linearity (R 2  = 0.995) between 11 and 95% relative humidity (RH), superior bending (with a curvature of 2.1 cm -1 ) and folding (up to 50 times) durability, and good long-time stability (more than 3 months). Microfluidic systems made out of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) offer a platform to mimic vascular flow conditions in model systems at well-defined shear stresses. However, extracellular matrix (ECM) proteins that are physisorbed on the PDMS are not reliably attached under high shear stress conditions, which makes long-term experiments difficult. To overcome this limitation, we functionalized PDMS surfaces with 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) by using different surface activation methods to develop a stable linkage between the PDMS surface and collagen, which served as a model ECM protein. The stability of the protein coating inside the microfluidic devices was evaluated in perfusion experiments with phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) at 10-40 dynes/cm 2 wall shear stress. To assess the stability of cell adhesion, endothelial cells were grown in a multi-shear device over a shear stress range of 20-150 dynes/cm 2 . Cells on the APTES-mediated collagen coating were stable over the entire shear stress range in PBS (pH 9) for 48 h. The results suggest that at high pH values, the electrostatic interaction between APTES-coated surfaces and collagen molecules offer a very promising tool to modify PDMS-based microfluidic devices for long-term endothelialization under high shear stress conditions., (Copyright © 2020 Elsevier B.V. Two fractions of kraft lignin of low and high molecular weight were reacted with cholesteryl chloroformate (Chol.Cl) to produce a modified lignin that demonstrated very high hydrophobicity. Surprisingly, both fractions displayed discernible melting points as opposed to the starting lignin. The study focuses on degradation efficiency of non-radical activation and radical activation systems of persulfate (PS) to degrade imidacloprid (IMI) by using sodium persulfate (SPS) as PS source. Copper oxide (CuO)-SPS and CuO/biochar (BC)-SPS were selected as PS non-radical activation systems, and pyrite (PyR)-SPS was selected as PS radical activation system. The degradation by CuO-SPS, CuO/BC-SPS and PyR-SPS systems was investigated from acidic to basic conditions (pH 3.0-11.0). Highest degradation by CuO-SPS and CuO/BC-SPS systems was achieved over pH 11.0. In contrast, highest degradation by PyR-SPS system was achieved over pH 3.0, however, PyR-SPS system was also found effective up to pH 9.0. It was found that degradation was more efficient in PS radical activation system, indicating that IMI could be oxidized by radicals rather than by activated PS. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analysis was carried out to investigate the generation of sulfate (SO 4 - ) and hydroxyl (OH) radicals, which indicated the presence of SO 4 - and OH in CuO-SPS, CuO/BC and PyR-SPS systems. However, free radical quenching analysis indicated that radicals were main reactive oxygen species for degradation. The lower degradation in PS non-radical activation systems was probably resulted from radicals existed as minor reactive oxygen species. The findings indicated that non-radical oxidation systems showed low reality for degradation and good degradation could be achieved by radical oxidation system. This work describes the derivatization of dextran using N-(tert-butyloxycarbonyl)-S-(trityl)-L-cysteine in the presence of N,N'-carbonyldiimidazole (CDI) as a coupling agent. Homogeneous reactions in dimethyl sulfoxide allowed for an efficient coupling of the amino acid derivative to the polymer backbone. Derivatization was confirmed by infrared and 13 C NMR spectroscopy, size exclusion chromatography and elemental analysis. The presence of hydrophobic protecting groups resulted in a product that can be shaped into water-insoluble particles stable in an aqueous environment and non-toxic for lung epithelial cells. It is suggested that materials composed of ester bonds between amino acids and polysaccharides are useful for targeted drug delivery, bio-imaging or surface functionalization., (Copyright © 2019. Developing green and facile approaches to produce nanostructures suitable for bioactives, nanoencapsulation faces some challenges in the nutraceutical and food bioactive industries due to potential risks arising from nanomaterials fabrication and consumption. High-intensity ultrasound is an effective technology to generate different bio-based structures in sub-micron or nanometer scale. This technique owing to some intrinsic advantages such as safety, straightforward operation, energy efficiency, and scale-up potential, as well as, ability to control over size and morpHology has stood out among various nanosynthetic routes. Ultrasonically-provided energy is mainly transferred to the droplets and particles via acoustic cavitation (which is formation, growth, and implosive collapse of bubbles in solvent). This review provides an outlook on the fundamentals of ultrasonication and some applicable setups in nanoencapsulation. Different kinds of nanostructures based on surfactants, lipids, proteins and carbohydrates formed by sonication, along with their advantages and disadvantages are assessed from the viewpoint of stability, particle size, and process impacts on some functionalities. The gastrointestinal fate and safety issues of ultrasonically prepared nanostructures are also discussed. Sonication, itself or in combination with other encapsulation approaches, alongside biopolymers generate nano-engineered carriers with enough stability, small particle sizes, and a low polydispersity. The nano-sized systems improve techno-functional activities of encapsulated bioactive agents including stability, solubility, dissolution, availability, controlled and targeted release profile in vitro and in vivo plus other bioactive properties such as antioxidant and antimicrobial capacities. This paper investigates the flocculation of Chlorella sorokiniana suspensions with a novel cellulose derivative, namely hairy cationic nanocrystalline cellulose (CNCC). CNCC are a brand new family of nanocellulose characterized by having two positively charged amorphous ends joint through a common crystalline shaft. Flocculation was monitored through laser reflectance and its mechanism was studied by means of zeta potential, fractal dimension and turbidity removal. CNCC dosage and shear rate were varied and their effect on floc morphology and filterability were assessed. CNCC effectively flocculated the cultures at dosages well below and over the isoelectric point, being the flocculation mechanisms and floc strength highly dependent on the doses applied. The filtration propensity of flocculated suspensions proved highly sensitive to small differences in flocs' geometry. The aggregation process entailed two phases, a first one in which the CNCC adsorbed on the surface of microalgal cells according to a flat random deposition up to reaching a maximal cell coverage, and a second one in which the free spots left were progressively covered with orthogonally deposited CNCC, being this later configuration the main responsible for intercellular attachment. In this study hierarchically-structured latex polymer coatings and self-supporting films were characterised and their suitability for cell growth studies was tested with Human Dermal Fibroblasts (HDF). Latex can be coated or printed on rigid or flexible substrates thus enabling high-throughput fabrication. Here, coverslip glass substrates were coated with blends of two different aqueous latex dispersions: hydrophobic polystyrene (PS) and hydrophilic carboxylated acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS). The nanostructured morphology and topography of the latex films was controlled by varying the mixing ratio of the components in the latex blend. Thin latex-coatings retain high transparency on glass allowing optical and high resolution imaging of cell growth and morphology. Compared to coverslip glass surfaces and commercial well-plates HDF cell growth was enhanced up to 150-250 % on latex surfaces with specific nanostructure. Growth rates were correlated with selected roughness parameters such as effective surface area (S q ), RMS-roughness (S dr ) and correlation length (S cl37 ). High-resolution confocal microscopy clearly indicated less actin stress-fibre development in cells on the latex surface compared to coverslip glass. Advanced Oxidation Processes (AOPs) are the techniques employed for oxidation of various organic contaminants in polluted water with the objective of making it suitable for human consumption like household and drinking purpose. AOPs use potent chemical oxidants to bring down the contaminant level in the water. In addition to this function, these processes are also capable to kills microbes (as disinfectant) and remove odor as well as improve taste of the drinking water. The non-photochemical AOPs methods include generation of hydroxyl radical in absence of light either by ozonation or through Fenton reaction. The photochemical AOPs methods use UV light along with H 2 O 2 , O 3 and/or Fe +2 to generate reactive hydroxyl radical. Non-photochemical method is the commonly used whereas, photochemical method is used when conventional O 3 and H 2 O 2 cannot completely oxidize organic pollutants. However, the choice of AOPs methods is depended upon the type of contaminant to be removed. AOPs cause loss of biological activity of the pollutant present in drinking water without generation of any toxicity. Conventional ozonation and AOPs can inactivate estrogenic compounds, antiviral compounds, antibiotics, and herbicides. However, the study of different AOPs methods for the treatment of drinking water has shown that oxidation of parent compound can also lead to the generation of a degradation/transformation product having biological activity/chemical toxicity similar to or different from the parent compound. Furthermore, an increased toxicity can also occur in AOPs treated drinking water. This review discusses various methods of AOPs, their merits, its application in drinking water treatment, the related issue of the evolution of toxicity in AOPs treated drinking water, biocatalyst, and analytical methods for identification of pollutants /transformed products and provides future directions to address such an issue., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier Inc. The microbial production of chemicals has traditionally relied on a single engineered microbe to enable the complete bioconversion of substrate to final product. Recently, a growing fraction of research has transitioned towards employing a modular co-culture engineering strategy using multiple microbes growing together to facilitate a divide-and-conquer approach for chemical biosynthesis. Here, we review key success stories that leverage the unique advantages of co-culture engineering, while also addressing the critical concerns that will limit the wide-spread implementation of this technology. Future studies that address the need to monitor and control the population dynamics of each strain module, while maintaining robust flux routes towards a wide range of desired products will lead the efforts to realize the true potential of co-culture engineering., (Copyright © 2017 Elsevier Ltd. Minerals are versatile tools utilised to modify and control the physical-chemical and functional properties of substrates. Those properties include ones directing cell fate; thus, minerals can potentially provide a direct and inexpensive method to manipulate cell behaviour. This paper shows how different minerals influence human dermal fibroblast behaviour depending on their properties. Different calcium carbonates, calcium sulphates, silica, silicates, and titanium dioxide were characterised using TEM, ATR-FTIR, and zeta potential measurements. Mineral-cell interactions were analysed through MTT assay, LDH assay, calcein AM staining, live cell imaging, immunofluorescence staining, western blot, and extra/intracellular calcium measurements. Results show that the interaction of the fibroblasts with the minerals was governed by a shared period of adaptation, followed by increased proliferation, growth inhibition, or increased toxicity. Properties such as size, ion release and chemical composition had a direct influence on the cells leading to cell agglomeration, morphological changes, and the possible formation of protein-mineral complexes. In addition, zeta potential and FTIR measurements of the minerals showed adsorption of the cell culture media onto the particles. Oil palm trunk (OPT) is one of the most promising lignocellulosic bioresources. To develop effective biodegradation, thermophilic, anaerobic microorganisms were screened from bovine manure compost using fibrillated OPT (f-OPT) pretreated by wet disk milling as the substrate. One thermophilic, anaerobic bacterium, strain CL-2, whose 16S rDNA gene has 98.6% sequence identity with that of Caldicoprobacter faecale DSM 20678 T , exhibited high degradation activity (32.7% reduction in total dry solids of f-OPT). Strain CL-2 did not use cellulose as a carbon source, but used hemicelluloses such as xylan, arabinoxylan, starch and pectin at 70 °C. Phylogenetic and morphologic analyses and the polysaccharide use suggest that CL-2 may be classified as a novel species of Caldicoprobacter, named Caldicoprobacter sp. CL-2. To characterize enzymatic activities of CL-2, extracellular enzymes were prepared from culture broth using beechwood xylan as the carbon source. The extracellular enzymes showed high xylanase activity, but low cellulase activity, suggesting that f-OPT degradation may depend on xylanase activity. To understand the xylanase system of CL-2, a major xylanase was cloned and characterized. The xylanase (CalXyn11A) had a modular structure consisting of a glycoside hydrolase (GH) family-11 domain and a family 36 carbohydrate-binding module. CalXyn11A did not show f-OPT degradation activity, but a strong synergistic effect was observed when CalXyn11A was added to the extracellular enzyme preparation. A series of MIL-53(Fe) materials were synthesized using a solvothermal method under different temperature and time conditions and were used as catalysts to activate persulfate and degrade Orange G (OG). Influences of the above conditions on the crystal structure and catalytic behavior were investigated. Degradation of OG under different conditions was evaluated, and the possible activation mechanism was speculated. The results indicate that high synthesis temperature (larger than 170 °C) leads to poor crystallinity and low catalytic activity, while MIL-53(Fe) cannot fully develop at low temperature (100 or 120 °C). The extension of synthesis time from 5 h to 3 d can increase the crystallinity of the samples, but weakened the catalytic activity, which was caused by the reduction of BET surface area and the amount of Fe (II)-coordinative unsaturated sites. Among all the samples, MIL-53(Fe)-A possesses the best crystal structure and catalytic activity. In optimal conditions, OG can be totally decolorized after degradation for 90 min, and a removal rate of 74% for COD was attained after 120 min. The initial solution pH had great influence on OG degradation, with the greatest removal in acidic pH environment. ESR spectra showed that sulfate radical (SO 4 - ·), hydroxyl radical (OH·), persulfate radical (S 2 O 8 - ·), and superoxide radical (O 2 ·) exist in this system under acidic conditions. Furthermore, with the increase of pH, the relative amount of O 2 · increases while that of OH· and SO 4 - · decreases, resulting in a reduced oxidizing capacity of the system.

The different physical and chemical properties of lignin might have various effects on the enzymatic hydrolysis of lignocellulosic substrates. In this study, the influence of lignin on enzymatic digestibility of cellulose was assessed. Addition of 20% (4g/L) isolated enzymatic lignin (lignin 2 and 3) and kraft lignin (lignin 4) resulted in 5-20% drop of glucose yield, depending on lignin sources. The inhibitory effect of lignin was abated as the enzyme loading increased from 10 to 20FPU/g dry substrate. However, the increasing lignin amount to 40% (8g/L) did not appear to further decrease the cellulose hydrolysis efficiency. Ethanol lignin (lignin 1) and calcium lignosulfonate (lignin 5) had no negative effect on the enzymatic hydrolysis of cellulose at cellulase loading of 10 or 20FPU/g dry substrate, the increasing lignin content to 40% presented 6.2% increase of glucose yield. The results indicated that different lignin had significantly influence on the enzymatic hydrolysis, which was confirmed by analysis in chemical composition, elemental analysis, functionality, and thermogravimetry., (Copyright © 2017 Elsevier Inc. This paper is concerned with the problems of finite-time stability and stabilization for stochastic Markov systems with mode-dependent time-delays. In order to reduce conservatism, a mode-dependent approach is utilized. Based on the derived stability conditions, state-feedback controller and observer-based controller are designed, respectively. The high dimensionality and noisy spectra of Mass Spectrometry (MS) data are two of the main challenges to achieving high accuracy recognition. The objective of this work is to produce an accurate prediction of class content by employing compressive sensing (CS). Not only can CS significantly reduce MS data dimensionality, but it will also allow for full reconstruction of original data. We are proposing a weighted mixing of L1- and L2-norms via a regularization term as a classifier within compressive sensing framework. Using performance measures such as OSR, PPV, NPV, Sen and Spec, we show that the L2-algorithm with regularization terms outperforms the L1-algorithm and Q5 under all applicable assumptions. We also aimed to use Block Sparse Bayesian Learning (BSBL) to reconstruct the MS data fingerprint which has also shown better performance results that those of L1-norm. These techniques were successfully applied to MS data to determine patient risk of prostate cancer by tracking Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) protein, and this analysis resulted in better performance when compared to currently used algorithms such as L1 minimization. This proposed work will be particularly useful in MS data reduction for assessing disease risk in patients and in future personalized medicine applications.

Unlabelled: This paper elucidates the unique setal morphology of the decorator crab Tiarinia cornigera, and further presents evidence to that setal morphology promotes micro-organism nucleation and adhesion. The carapace of this crab is covered by clusters of setae, each comprising a hollow acicular stem that is enveloped by a haystack-like structure. Using computational fluid dynamics, we find that these setae are responsible for manipulating water flow over the carapace surface. Micro-organisms in the sea water, nest in areas of flow stagnation and as a result, nucleate to and biofoul the setae by means of chemical adhesion. Attached micro-organisms secrete extracellular polymeric substances, which we deduce must also provide an additional element of chemical adhesion to mechanically interlocked mesoscopic and macroscopic biomatter. By coupling physical and chemical methods for adhesion, T. cornigera is able to hierarchically decorate its carapace., Statement of Significance: Our paper brings to light the unique decorator crab carapace morphology of T. cornigera; and furthermore evidences its function in micro-organism nucleation and adhesion. We show how this special carapace morphology directs and guides water flow to form nesting regions of water stagnation where micro-organisms can nucleate and adhere. In the literature, decorator crab carapaces are presumed to be able to mechanically interlock biomatter as camouflage using hook-like setal outgrowths. T. cornigera contrarily exhibits clusters of hay-stack like structures. By encouraging micro-organism adhesion to the carapace setae, T. cornigera is able to effectively attach biomatter using both chemical and physical principles of adhesion. T. cornigera essentially has a super-biofouling carapace surface, for at least micro-organisms. Our work will have an impact on researchers interested in biofouling, adhesion, biomedical and purification filter systems, and in the development of novel biomimetic surfaces with tailored properties., (Copyright © 2016 Acta Materialia Inc. Cellulose electrospun nanofibrous mats coated with bilayers of chitosan (CS) and epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) or with bilayers of CS-rectorite (REC) composite (CS-REC) and EGCG were fabricated via layer-by-layer (LBL) self-assembly technique. LBL-structured cellulose nanofibers still maintained three-dimension fiber structure according to the observation from scanning electron microscopy images. The average diameter of nanofibers were enlarged with the addition of REC. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy results confirmed the deposition of CS and CS-REC onto the corresponding mats. The tensile strength and rate of elongation at break of LBL-structured nanofibers had no difference from those of uncoated nanofibers. The encapsulation efficiency and loading capacity of nanofibers were enhanced in the presence of REC. In addition the in-vitro cumulative release profiles of EGCG indicate that the addition of REC delayed the release of EGCG. Antimicrobial assay demonstrated the inhibitory effects of CS and EGCG on the growth of Staphylococcus aureus. Meanwhile the CS-REC composites improved the antimicrobial effects of CS and EGCG by adsorption of bacteria to the surface of REC then enhancement of exposure of bacteria to EGCG and the matrix of CS., (Copyright © 2016 Elsevier B.V. The present study investigates the potential of layer by layer coated calcium phosphate nanoparticles - for oral delivery of insulin where Vitamin B12 grafted chitosan and sodium alginate have been used as cationic and anionic polyelectrolyte respectively. The major emphasis has been given on the role Vitamin B12 conjugated chitosan as cationic polyelectrolyte (VitB12-Chi) in the delivery system. VitB12-Chi conjugate was prepared by carbodiimide reaction. The formulated VirB12-Chi-CPNPs were tested for in vitro and in vivo efficacy studies carried out in Caco-2 monolayers and diabetic rats. VitB12-Chi-CPNPs with particle size <250nm and zeta potential+32.56(±2.34) exhibited pH responsive insulin release at simulated gastric fluid and simulated intestinal fluid. Fluorescence microscopy and flow cytometry studies revealed higher uptake of VitB12-Chi-CPNPs in Caco-2 monolayer in comparison to Chi-CPNPs. Further reduction in TEER supported paracellular transport of insulin because of opening of tight epithelial junctions. In vivo intestinal uptake of FITC tagged Vit-B12-Chi-CPNPs from different intestinal segments supported paracellular and receptor mediated uptake of VitB12-Chi-CPNPs. Plasma insulin and blood glucose levels were measured in diabetic rats and showed about four fold increases in insulin bioavailability and sustained hypoglycemic effects up to 12h of administration with VitB12-Chi-CPNPs in comparison to Chi-CPNPs. Results of the study revealed the potential of layer by layer nanoparticles for oral insulin delivery. The study also specifically highlighted the role of VitB12 as a pH sensitive and targeting ligand which significantly participated in enhancing insulin oral bioavailability., Statement of Significance: Oral delivery of insulin is always the most desirable approach for diabetic patients however it's also the most challenging in respect to formulation development due to harsh gastrointestinal conditions. Several groups have been working from decades for oral delivery of insulin. However the beauty of this prototype formulation is that it exhibits the pH responsive behavior in natural condition of gastrointestinal tract. It resists the release of insulin at gastric condition however stimulate the release at intestinal conditions. Adsorption of proteins and adhesion of bacteria to a surface is affected by chemical and physical interactions. In this study, polymer coatings and their ability to adsorb avidin and Staphylococcus aureus were investigated. The surface chemistry and topography of the polymer coatings was modified by changing the weight ratio of the hydrophobic polystyrene (PS) and the hydrophilic acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) components in the polymer blend. Avidin adsorbed less to the ABS phase compared with the PS phase. The side-on orientation of avidin on the ABS surface, however, resulted in a higher specific binding of biotinylated bovine serum albumin. Steric effects and hydrophobic protein-surface interactions decreased the activity of avidin on the PS phase. The increased hydrophobicity and roughness of the polymer coatings enhanced the adhesion of S. aureus. Antagonists and inhibitory molecules responsible for maintaining tissue homeostasis can present a significant barrier to healing when tissue engineering/regenerative medicine strategies are employed. One example of this situation is the up-regulation of antagonists such as noggin in response to increasing concentrations of bone morphogenetic protein-2 (BMP-2) present from endogenous bone repair processes or delivered exogenously from biomaterials (synthetic bone grafts). While recombinant human (rh)BMP-2 delivered from synthetic bone grafts has been shown to be an effective alternative to autografts and allografts, the supraphysiological doses of rhBMP-2 have led to clinically-adverse side effects. The high rhBMP-2 dosage may be required, in part, to overcome the presence of antagonists such as noggin. Small interfering RNA (siRNA) is an appealing approach to overcome this problem because it can knock-down antagonists or inhibitory molecules in a temporary manner. Here, we conducted fundamental studies on the delivery of siRNA from material surfaces as a means to knock-down antagonists like noggin. Non-viral cationic lipid (Lipofectamine)-siRNA complexes were delivered from a fibrin hydrogel surface to MC3T3-E1 preosteoblasts that were treated with a supraphysiological dose of rhBMP-2 to achieve noggin mRNA expression levels higher than cells naïve to rhBMP-2. Confocal microscopy and flow cytometry showed intracellular uptake of siRNA in over 98% of MC3T3-E1 cells after 48 h. Doses of 0.5 and 1 μg noggin siRNA were able to significantly reduce noggin mRNA to levels equivalent to those in MC3T3-E1 cells not exposed to rhBMP-2 with no effects on cell viability., Statement of Significance: Small interfering RNA (siRNA) has been considered for treatment of diseases ranging from Alzheimer's to cancer. However, the ability to use siRNA in conjunction with biomaterials to direct tissue regeneration processes has received relatively little attention. Using the bone morphogenetic protein 2 antagonist, noggin, as a model, this research describes an approach to knock-down molecules that are inhibitory to desired regenerative pathways at the mRNA level via siRNA delivery from a hydrogel surface. Interactions between the material (fibrin) surface and polycation-siRNA complexes, release of the siRNA from the material surface, high levels of cellular uptake/internalization of siRNA, and significant knockdown of the targeting (noggin) mRNA are demonstrated. Polymeric biomaterials that provide a matrix for cell attachment and proliferation while achieving delivery of therapeutic agents are an important component of tissue engineering and regenerative medicine strategies. Keratins are a class of proteins that have received attention for numerous tissue engineering applications because, like other natural polymers, they promote favorable cell interactions and have non-toxic degradation products. Keratins can be extracted from various sources including human hair, and they are characterized by a high percentage of cysteine residues. Thiol groups on reductively extracted keratin (kerateine) form disulfide bonds, providing a more stable cross-linked hydrogel network than oxidatively extracted keratin (keratose) that cannot form disulfide crosslinks. We hypothesized that an iodoacetamide alkylation (or "capping") of cysteine thiol groups on the kerateine form of keratin could be used as a simple method to modulate the levels of disulfide crosslinking in keratin hydrogels, providing tunable rates of gel erosion and therapeutic agent release. After alkylation, the alkylated kerateines still formed hydrogels and the alkylation led to changes in the mechanical and visco-elastic properties of the materials consistent with loss of disulfide crosslinking. The alkylated kerateines did not lead to toxicity in MC3T3-E1 pre-osteoblasts. These cells adhered to keratin at levels comparable to fibronectin and greater than collagen. Alkylated kerateine gels eroded more rapidly than non-alkylated kerateine and this control over erosion led to tunable rates of delivery of rhBMP-2, rhIGF-1, and ciprofloxacin. These results demonstrate that alkylation of kerateine cysteine residues provides a cell-compatible approach to tune rates of hydrogel erosion and therapeutic agent release within the context of a naturally-derived polymeric system., (Copyright © 2015 Acta Materialia Inc. In this paper, we encage insulin within calcium carbonate by means of a biomineralisation process. We find that both dogbone and crossbone morphologies develop during the crystallisation process. Understanding the uptake of organic pollutants by plants is an important part of the assessment of risks from crops grown on contaminated soils. This study was an investigation of the effects of surfactants added to PAHs-contaminated soil on the uptake and accumulation of PAHs in maize tissues during phytoremediation. The accumulation of phenanthrene (PHE) and pyrene (PYR) by maize plant was not influenced significantly by the surfactant amendment to the soil. The distribution of PHE and PYR in maize tissues was not positively correlated with the corresponding lipid contents. Remarkably, the concentrations of PHE (20.9 ng g(-1)) and PYR (0.9 ng g(-1)) in maize grain were similar to or even much lower than those in some foods. Moreover, surfactants could enhance the removal of pollutants from contaminated soil during phytoremediation, which might be due to surfactant desorption ability and microbial activity in soil. Oxidative stress-mediated cellular injury has been considered as a major cause of neurodegenerative diseases including Alzheimer and Parkinson diseases. The scavenging of reactive oxygen species (ROS) mediated by antioxidants may be a potential strategy for retarding the disease's progression. Macranthoin G (MCG), isolated from Eucommia ulmoides, is a derivative from chlorogenic acid methyl ester and caffeic acid. This study is aimed to investigate the protective role of MCG against the cytotoxicity induced by hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and to elucidate potential protective mechanisms in rat pheochromocytoma (PC12) cells. The results showed that the treatment of PC12 cells with MCG prior to H2O2 exposure effectively increased the cell viability, and stabilized the mitochondria membrane potential (MMP); furthermore, it enhanced the antioxidant enzyme activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) and the levels of intracellular glutathione (GSH); it also decreased the malondialdehyde (MDA) content, intracellular ROS, caspase-3 activation, as well as cell apoptosis. In addition, the MCG treatment minimized the cell injury by H2O2 via down-regulation of the NF-κB pathway as well as activation of phosphorylation of IκBα, p38, and the extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK). This study aims to develop a high-performance delivery system using microfibrillated cellulose (MFC)-coated papers as a controlled release system combined with the well-known drug delivery agent, β-cyclodextrin (βCD). Chlorhexidine digluconate (CHX), an antibacterial molecule, was mixed with a suspension of MFC or a βCD solution or mixed with both the substances, before coating onto a cellulosic substrate. The intermittent diffusion of CHX (i.e., diffusion interrupted by the renewal of the release medium periodically) was conducted in an aqueous medium, and the release mechanism of CHX was elucidated by field emission gun-scanning electron microscopy, SEM, NMR, and Fourier transform infrared analyses. According to the literature, both βCD and MFC are efficient controlled delivery systems. This study indicated that βCD releases CHX more gradually and over a longer period of time compared to MFC, which is mainly due to the ability of βCD to form an inclusion complex with CHX. Furthermore from the release study, a complementary action when the two compounds were combined was deduced. MFC mainly affected the burst effect, while βCD primarily controlled the amount of CHX released over time. In this paper, two different types of controlled release systems are proposed and compared. Depending on the final application, the use of βCD alone would release low amounts of active molecules over time (slow delivery), whereas the combination of β-cyclodextrin and MFC would be more suitable for the release of higher amounts of active molecules over time (rapid delivery)., (Copyright © 2014 Elsevier B.V.
