Background: Metabolic acidosis (MA) is the most common acid-base disorder reported in horses with colitis but its association with survival is yet to be determined., Objective: Investigate the types of MA in horses with colitis to determine effects of various anions on fatality rates., Animals and Procedures: We studied 158 horses with colitis. Horses were classified into 4 groups depending on the anion contributing to MA: i) no MA, ii) lactic acidosis (LA), iii) unmeasured strong ion (USI) acidosis, and iv) hyperchloremic acidosis (HA)., Results: Sixty percent (95/158) of horses had no MA, 22% (34/158) had LA, 12% (19/158) had HA, and 6% (10/158) had USI acidosis. The fatality rate of horses without MA was 20% (20/95), whereas the rates for those with LA, USI, and HA were 53% (18/34), 30% (3/10), and 16% (3/19), respectively. Horses with LA were more likely to die or be euthanized than horses without MA (OR: 4.2, 95% CI: 1.83 to 9.72, P < 0.001) and HA (OR: 5.9, 95% CI: 1.47 to 24.4, P < 0.01)., Conclusion and Clinical Relevance: Lactic acidosis was the most common type of MA in horses with colitis, and it was associated with non-survival., (Copyright and/or publishing rights held by the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association.)

The term "sepsis-induced cardiomyopathy" (SIC) is used to describe transient cardiac dysfunction in septic patients. However, there is no universally accepted definition of SIC; a reduction in left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) is often used. In addition to systolic dysfunction, diastolic dysfunction is now recognized as an essential component of SIC. It can be emphasized that previous animal experiments played an essential role in revealing SIC and hemodynamic instability in sepsis and septic shock. The diagnostic and prognostic capabilities of echocardiography for the assessment of SIC have been extensively studied since its introduction into intensive care clinical practice. Recent studies in dogs, calves, and horses have shown that left and right ventricular systolic dysfunction, left ventricular diastolic dysfunction, and circulatory dysfunction can occur in sepsis, severe sepsis, and septic shock in animals. The objective of this study was to investigate the postoperative use of intrasynovial honey as an antimicrobial after treatment for synovial sepsis in horses. One colt and 2 mares were presented with acute lameness, with or without an associated wound. All 3 cases were initially managed with surgical endoscopic or tenoscopic debridement and lavage for treatment of different synovial structures. Collection of synovial fluid was consistent with synovial sepsis and this was diagnosed in each case. All horses subsequently underwent arthroscopic lavage under general anesthetic and intraarticular or intrathecal medical-grade honey (MGH) was then instilled. All 3 cases recovered well and were free from lameness at all gaits. Although there is extensive research about the antimicrobial properties of honey and growing interest in the biocompatibility of honey in joints with the use of honey hydrogels in human medicine, the research in veterinary medicine is lacking. There are studies describing the antimicrobial properties of honey in healing wounds in horses, but there are no published studies describing the use of honey within a synovial structure. Further research is necessary to assess the biocompatibility of honey in equine articular cartilage. A 6-year-old chestnut Dutch Warmblood gelding was presented for right front lameness 1 mo after being cast in a stall at a 1.20-meter jumping event. Lameness work-up revealed mild lameness on the right and left front legs, with diffuse swelling over the right front pastern. Ultrasonic evaluation yielded suspicion of collateral desmopathy of the proximal interphalangeal joint that was subsequently confirmed via MRI. Two weeks after initial evaluation, the proximal and distal interphalangeal joints were injected with Pro-Stride Autologous Protein Solution, immediately followed by Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy of the lateral and medial collateral ligaments. Follow-up at 2 and 3 mo after treatment revealed reduced joint effusion of the proximal and distal interphalangeal joints, as well as improved fiber organization of the associated collateral ligaments. The article cites a study which examined the effects of the administration of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) on healthy equine joints. The article discusses the findings of a retrospective questionnaire-based survey which shows the efficacy of bloodroot ointment from Newmarket, a supplier of veterinary medicine, in treating the sarcoids, a skin tumor in equine. It mentions that the choice of treatment of sarcoids depends on the compliance of animal owners and options include laser therapy, radiotherapy and chemotherapy. The article presents a case study of sinusitis associated with nasogastric intubation in three horses, including a 400-kg 4-year-old Morgan stallion, 550-kg, 16-year-old Anglo Arab mare, and 800-kg, 6-year-old Percheron gelding. It says that the three horses have developed nosocomial sinusitis after abdominal surgery. It states that sinusitis was suspected because of the presence of discharge confirmed by several examinations, including upper airway endoscopy, radiograph, and bacterial culture.

Objective: Molecular identification of small cestodes, morphologically consistent with Echinococcus multilocularis , recovered at necropsy from the gastrointestinal tract contents of a red fox, was accomplished by PCR using published species-specific n ad1 primers and methods., Animal: Red fox (Vulpes vulpes) ., Procedure: Small cestodes recovered from intestinal contents of a red fox trapped on Prince Edward Island in December 2020 (frozen at -20°C before being processed for parasite recovery in June 2021) were morphologically identified. Species identity confirmation and haplotyping of the cestodes were done via PCR and DNA sequencing of the n ad1, nad2 , and cob genes., Results: Small cestodes morphologically consistent with E. multilocularis were detected in the gastrointestinal tract contents of a red fox trapped near Montague, PEI. The species identity was confirmed via PCR. Haplotyping revealed that they were of the European E1 haplotype., Conclusion: In Canada, E. multilocularis has been reported as far east as Québec, with most reports being in central and western provinces and territories. This is the first report of E. multilocularis infection in a canid host east of Ontario, Canada and illustrates the need for regular wildlife disease surveillance to enhance our understanding of emerging pathogens of veterinary and medical importance., Clinical Relevance: Echinococcus multilocularis is a highly pathogenic zoonotic cestode from the family Taeniidae that can cause alveolar echinococcosis (AE) when rodents, dogs, horses, pigs, non-human primates, or humans ingest its eggs.
