Based on the analytical solution, the paper focuses on the residual stress distribution in composite parts with layered or graded structures as they cool from a high production temperature to room temperature. The solution obtained is valid for the most part of a body whose length and width are significantly higher than its thickness, by assuming that a state of equal biaxial stress exists. Laminar and graded ZrB2–ZrO2 composites are two examples of a ceramic composite that are taken into consideration to perform a quantitative analysis. It is demonstrated that in the layered composite the residual stress distribution has a stepwise shape, in contrast with the smooth distribution in the linear graded composite. The solution is easily extended to any nonlinear spatial variations of compositions. The changes in the thermal expansion coefficient and in the biaxial modulus under changes of the content of constituents are needed to estimate the residual stress in the composite.
