The location of six [D.sub.2] binding sites in [Cu.sub.3] [(1,3,5,-benzenetricarboxylate).sub.2] ([Cu.sub.3(BTC).sub.2]) is revealed using neutron power diffraction and an intricate filling order of the framework is described. Direct structural evidence of the potential importance of metal sites to hydrogen storage is provided by the location of the primary site at the coordinative unsaturated Cu atoms.

The hydration reaction of tricalcium and dicalcium silicate mixtures is studied using quasielastic neutron scattering. Results suggest that favorable reaction mechanics provide optimal strength when an 80-95 % dicalcium silicate mixture is used.

Thestructure of the nanoporous metal–organic frameworkCu3(BTC)2(BTC = 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylate)with a variety of molecular guests was studied in situusing single crystal X-ray diffraction. By collecting crystal structuredata for a series of guests within the same host crystal, insightsinto the molecular interactions underpinning guest adsorption processeshave been gained. Adsorption behaviors are influenced strongly byboth enthalpic and entropic thermodynamic, as well as interpore steric(size-exclusion) effects, and we note correlations between guest attributesand these effects. Vapor adsorption measurements revealed a guestuptake capacity inversely proportional to guest size. Correspondingly,structural results show that guests reside in the smallest pores accessibleto them. Interpore steric effects for larger guests cause these tobe excluded from the smallest pores, and this corresponds to lowertotal uptake. Both hydrophilic and lipophilic small guests adsorbfavorably into the 5 Å diameter smallest pore of the material,with the number of guests in these pores dependent on guest size andtheir location, in turn dependent upon both guest–guest interactionsand competition between hydrogen-bonding interactions at the aperturesof the smallest pore and lipophilic interactions at the center ofthe smallest pore. Hydrophilic guests with lone electron pairs interactpreferentially with the coordinatively unsaturated Cu sites of thedesolvated framework, with the number of these depending on stericinteractions between neighboring bound guests and guest flexibility.Guest coordination at the Cu sites has a significant effect on theframework structure, increasing the Cu···Cu distancein the dinuclear unit, with the Cu3(BTC)2unitcell being smaller when guests that do not coordinate with the Cuare present, and in the case of cyclohexane, smaller than for thedesolvated framework. Overall, our comprehensive structural studyreconciles Cu3(BTC)2adsorption properties withthe underlying guest–host and guest–guest interactionsthat gives rise to these. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We used in situ neutron powder diffraction(NPD) to study the migrationof Li in Li4Ti5O12anodes with differentparticle sizes during battery cycling. The motivation of this workwas to uncover the mechanism of the increased capacity of the batterymade with a smaller-particle-sized anode. In real time, we monitoredthe anode lattice parameter, Li distribution, and oxidation stateof the Ti atom, and these suggested an increase in the rate of Liincorporation into the anode rather than a change in the migrationpathway as a result of the particle size reduction. The lattice ofthese anodes during continuous lithiation undergoes expansion followedby a gradual contraction and then expansion again. The measured latticeparameter changes were reconciled with Li occupation at specific siteswithin the Li4Ti5O12crystal structure,where Li migrates from the 8ato 16csites. Despite these similar Li-diffusion pathways, in larger-particle-sizedLi4Ti5O12the population of Li atthe 16csite is accompanied by Li depopulation fromthe 8asite, which is in contrast to the smaller-particle-sizedanode where our results suggest that Li at the 8asite is replenished faster than the rate of transfer of Li to the16csite. Fourier-difference nuclear density mapsof both anodes suggest that 32esites are involvedin the diffusion pathway of Li. NPD is again shown to be an excellenttool for the study of electrode materials for Li-ion batteries, particularlywhen it is used to probe real-time crystallographic changes of thematerials in an operating battery during charge–discharge cycling. The favorable combination of fast-ionic conductivity and high electrochemical stability of Li-stuffed garnet type Li7La3Zr2O12 (LLZ) makes this material a promising candidate for applications as a solid-state electrolyte in high-energy-density batteries. However, a widespread technical use of LLZ is impeded by difficulty in reliable formation and densification of the pure fast-ion conducting phase. The present study of the phase-formation process enables rational fabrication procedures to be devised based on a thorough understanding of the complex phase formation of LLZ. In situ neutron powder diffraction monitoring of the phase formation revealed an influence of the partial melting of precursors on the formation of the fast-ion conducting phase, indicating that in the typical synthesis route LLZ is not formed in a solid-state reaction but from a partial carbonate melt that decomposes on further heating. Lithium-ion batteries power many portable devices and in the future are likely to play a significant role in sustainable-energy systems for transportation and the electrical grid. LiFePO4 is a candidate cathode material for second-generation lithium-ion batteries, bringing a high rate capability to this technology. LiFePO4 functions as a cathode where delithiation occurs via either a solid-solution or a two-phase mechanism, the pathway taken being influenced by sample preparation and electrochemical conditions. The details of the delithiation pathway and the relationship between the two-phase and solid-solution reactions remain controversial. Here we report, using real-time in situ neutron powder diffraction, the simultaneous occurrence of solid-solution and two-phase reactions after deep discharge in nonequilibrium conditions. This work is an example of the experimental investigation of nonequilibrium states in a commercially available LiFePO4 cathode and reveals the concurrent occurrence of and transition between the solid-solution and two-phase reactions. Because of its stability, nanosized olivine LiFePO4 opens the door toward high-power Li-ion battery technology for large-scale applications as required for plug-in hybrid vehicles. Here, we reveal that the thermodynamics of first-order phase transitions in nanoinsertion materials is distinctly different from bulk materials as demonstrated by the decreasing miscibility gap that appears to be strongly dependent on the overall composition in LiFePO4. In contrast to our common thermodynamic knowledge, that dictates solubility limits to be independent of the overall composition, combined neutron and X-ray diffraction reveals strongly varying solubility limits below particle sizes of 35 nm. A rationale is found based on modeling of the diffuse interface. Size confinement of the lithium concentration gradient, which exists at the phase boundary, competes with the in bulk energetically favorable compositions. Consequently, temperature and size diagrams of nanomaterials require complete reconsideration, being strongly dependent on the overall composition. This is vital knowledge for the future nanoarchitecturing of superior energy storage devices as the performance will heavily depend on the disclosed nanoionic properties. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

With the potential of delivering reversible capacities of up to 300 mAh/g, Li-rich transition-metal oxides hold great promise as cathode materials for future Li-ion batteries. However, a cohesive synthesis-structure-electrochemistry relationship is still lacking for these materials, which impedes progress in the field. This work investigates how and why different synthesis routes, specifically solid-state and modified Pechini sol-gel methods, affect the properties of Li 2 MnO 3 , a compositionally simple member of this material system. Through a comprehensive investigation of the synthesis mechanism along with crystallographic, morphological, and electrochemical characterization, the effects of different synthesis routes were found to predominantly influence the degree of stacking faults and particle morphology. That is, the modified Pechini method produced isotropic spherical particles with approximately 57% faulting and the solid-state samples possessed heterogeneous morphology with approximately 43% faulting probability. Inevitably, these differences lead to variations in electrochemical performance. This study accentuates the importance of understanding how synthesis affects the electrochemistry of these materials, which is critical considering the crystallographic and electrochemical complexities of the class of materials more generally. The methodology employed here is extendable to studying synthesis-property relationships of other compositionally complex Li-rich layered oxide systems.

Development of low-cost and cobalt-free efficient cathode materials for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) remains one of the paramount motivations for material researchers at a low temperature (<650 °C). In particular, iron-based perovskite oxides show promise as electrocatalysts for ORR because Fe metal is cheaper and naturally abundant, exhibit matched thermal expansion with contacting components such as electrolytes, and show high tolerance in a CO 2 -containing atmosphere. Herein, we demonstrated a new mechanism, the in situ formation of alkali metal carbonates at the cathode surface. This new mechanism leads to an efficient and robust cobalt-free electrocatalyst (Sr 0.95 A 0.05 Fe 0.8 Nb 0.1 Ta 0.1 O 3-δ , SAFNT5, A = Li, Na, and K) for the application of low-temperature solid oxide fuel cells (LT-SOFCs). Our results revealed that the formation of Li\K carbonates boosts the ORR activity with an area-specific resistance as low as 0.12 and 0.18 Ω cm 2 at 600 °C, which show the highest performance of the cobalt-free single-phase cathode that has been ever reported so far. We also find that the chemical stability and tolerance of tested cathodes toward CO 2 poisoning significantly improved with alkali carbonates, as compared to the pristine SrFe 0.8 Nb 0.1 Ta 0.1 O 3-δ (SFNT) at 600 °C. This work demonstrates the conclusive role of alkali carbonates in developing highly efficient and stable cobalt-free cathodes for LT-SOFCs and CO 2 neutralization.

All-solid-state Li-ion batteries with metallic Li anodes and solid electrolytes could offer superior energy density and safety over conventional Li-ion batteries. However, compared with organic liquid electrolytes, the low conductivity of solid electrolytes and large electrolyte/electrode interfacial resistance impede their practical application. Garnet-type Li-ion conducting oxides are among the most promising electrolytes for all-solid-state Li-ion batteries. In this work, the large-radius Rb is doped at the La site of cubic Li 6.10 Ga 0.30 La 3 Zr 2 O 12 to enhance the Li-ion conductivity for the first time. The Li 6.20 Ga 0.30 La 2.95 Rb 0.05 Zr 2 O 12 electrolyte exhibits a Li-ion conductivity of 1.62 mS cm -1 at room temperature, which is the highest conductivity reported until now. All-solid-state Li-ion batteries are constructed from the electrolyte, metallic Li anode, and LiFePO 4 active cathode. The addition of Li(CF 3 SO 2 ) 2 N electrolytic salt in the cathode effectively reduces the interfacial resistance, allowing for a high initial discharge capacity of 152 mAh g -1 and good cycling stability with 110 mAh g -1 retained after 20 cycles at a charge/discharge rate of 0.05 C at 60 °C.

Owing to their high conductivity, crystalline Li 7-3x Ga x La 3 Zr 2 O 12 garnets are promising electrolytes for all-solid-state lithium-ion batteries. Herein, the influence of Ga doping on the phase, lithium-ion distribution, and conductivity of Li 7-3x Ga x La 3 Zr 2 O 12 garnets is investigated, with the determined concentration and mobility of lithium ions shedding light on the origin of the high conductivity of Li 7-3x Ga x La 3 Zr 2 O 12 . When the Ga concentration exceeds 0.20 Ga per formula unit, the garnet-type material is found to assume a cubic structure, but lower Ga concentrations result in the coexistence of cubic and tetragonal phases. Most lithium within Li 7-3x Ga x La 3 Zr 2 O 12 is found to reside at the octahedral 96h site, away from the central octahedral 48g site, while the remaining lithium resides at the tetrahedral 24d site. Such kind of lithium distribution leads to high lithium-ion mobility, which is the origin of the high conductivity; the highest lithium-ion conductivity of 1.46 mS/cm at 25 °C is found to be achieved for Li 7-3x Ga x La 3 Zr 2 O 12 at x = 0.25. Additionally, there are two lithium-ion migration pathways in the Li 7-3x Ga x La 3 Zr 2 O 12 garnets: 96h-96h and 24d-96h-24d, but the lithium ions transporting through the 96h-96h pathway determine the overall conductivity.

The mechanism of capacity fade of the Li2MnO3·LiMO2 (M = Li, Ni, Co, Mn) composite positive electrode within a full cell was investigated using a combination of operando neutron powder diffraction and transmission X-ray microscopy methods, enabling the phase, crystallographic, and morphological evolution of the material during electrochemical cycling to be understood. The electrode was shown to initially consist of 73(1) wt % R3̅m LiMO2 with the remaining 27(1) wt % C2/m Li2MnO3 likely existing as an intergrowth. Cracking in the Li2MnO3·LiMO2 electrode particle under operando microscopy observation was revealed to be initiated by the solid-solution reaction of the LiMO2 phase on charge to 4.55 V vs Li(+)/Li and intensified during further charge to 4.7 V vs Li(+)/Li during the concurrent two-phase reaction of the LiMO2 phase, involving the largest lattice change of any phase, and oxygen evolution from the Li2MnO3 phase. Notably, significant healing of the generated cracks in the Li2MnO3·LiMO2 electrode particle occurred during subsequent lithiation on discharge, with this rehealing being principally associated with the solid-solution reaction of the LiMO2 phase. This work reveals that while it is the reduction of lattice size of electrode phases during charge that results in cracking of the Li2MnO3·LiMO2 electrode particle, with the extent of cracking correlated to the magnitude of the size change, crack healing is possible in the reverse solid-solution reaction occurring during discharge. Importantly, it is the phase separation during the two-phase reaction of the LiMO2 phase that prevents the complete healing of the electrode particle, leading to pulverization over extended cycling. This work points to the minimization of behavior leading to phase separation, such as two-phase and oxygen evolution, as a key strategy in preventing capacity fade of the electrode.

We report the magnetic structure of the two magnetically ordered phases of Co3(OH)2(C4O4)2, a coordination polymer that consists of a triangular framework decorated with anisotropic Co(II) ions. Neutron diffraction experiments allow us to confirm that the magnetic behavior changes upon dehydration and reveal the complex phase behavior of this system, relative to the hydrated compound Co3(OH)2(C4O4)2·3H2O. One phase is shown to display spin idle behavior, where only a fraction of the moments order at intermediate temperatures, while at the lowest temperatures the system orders fully, in this case with a net magnetic moment. This novel magnetic behavior is discussed within the framework of a simple Hamiltonian and representational analysis and rationalizes this multiphase behavior by considering the combination of frustration and anisotropy. The change in behavior on dehydration is also rationalized with respect to the changes in the single-ion anisotropy of the cobalt.

Aligned multiwalled carbon nanotube (CNT) arrays were prepared using chemical vapor deposition of C2H4 on Fe catalyst at 750 °C. CNT array height and alignment depends strongly on the duration of H2 pretreatment, with optimal height and alignment achieved using 10-15 min pretreatment. Small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) was used to quantify the alignment, distribution, and size of the CNTs in arrays produced from varying pretreatment times and the results correlated with microscopy measurements. SAXS analysis revealed that the higher section of the CNT arrays exhibited better alignment than the lower section. Combining these insights with transmission electron microscopy measurements of the CNT defects within each array enable a mechanism for the CNT growth to be proposed, where the loss of alignment arises from deformation of the CNTs during their growth. Gas permeation test across densified CNT arrays indicated that the alignment of the CNT array plays an important role in the gas transport, and that the gas diffusion across the well-aligned CNT arrays was enhanced by a factor of ~45, which is much more than that across the poorly aligned CNT arrays, with an enhancement factor of ~8.

A two-step floating-ferrocene chemical vapor deposition method has been devised for the preparation of single-layered aligned carbon nanotube (CNT) arrays. In the first step, uniform Fe catalysts are in situ produced and coated on a Si substrate from ferrocene; single-layered CNT arrays are prepared on these catalysts from ethylene in the second step. The effect of ferrocene loading on the distribution of Fe catalysts, as well as the morphology, diameter, and height of the CNT arrays, was investigated. A novel vacuum extraction process was employed to release the as-prepared CNT array from the Si wafer after water etching at 750 °C. The structural integrity of the free-standing arrays was preserved after the detachment process. The interface between the substrate and the as-grown CNT array was examined. The Fe catalyst distribution on the Si substrate remained homogeneous when the CNT array was removed, and the tops and bottoms of the arrays had different structures, suggesting that the arrays were formed predominantly by a base-growth mode. The air-free reaction between FeCl(2) and H(4)dobdc (dobdc(4-) = 2,5-dioxido-1,4-benzenedicarboxylate) in a mixture of N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) and methanol affords Fe(2)(dobdc)·4DMF, a metal-organic framework adopting the MOF-74 (or CPO-27) structure type. The desolvated form of this material displays a Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area of 1360 m(2)/g and features a hexagonal array of one-dimensional channels lined with coordinatively unsaturated Fe(II) centers. Gas adsorption isotherms at 298 K indicate that Fe(2)(dobdc) binds O(2) preferentially over N(2), with an irreversible capacity of 9.3 wt %, corresponding to the adsorption of one O(2) molecule per two iron centers. Remarkably, at 211 K, O(2) uptake is fully reversible and the capacity increases to 18.2 wt %, corresponding to the adsorption of one O(2) molecule per iron center. Mössbauer and infrared spectra are consistent with partial charge transfer from iron(II) to O(2) at low temperature and complete charge transfer to form iron(III) and O(2)(2-) at room temperature. The results of Rietveld analyses of powder neutron diffraction data (4 K) confirm this interpretation, revealing O(2) bound to iron in a symmetric side-on mode with d(O-O) = 1.25(1) Å at low temperature and in a slipped side-on mode with d(O-O) = 1.6(1) Å when oxidized at room temperature. Application of ideal adsorbed solution theory in simulating breakthrough curves shows Fe(2)(dobdc) to be a promising material for the separation of O(2) from air at temperatures well above those currently employed in industrial settings.
