The catalytic wet air oxidation of aqueous solution containing 1000 ppm aniline was conducted in a trickle-bed reactor packed with a novel nanocasted Mn-Ce-oxide catalyst (surface area of 300 m²/g) prepared using SBA-15 silica as a hard template. A range of liquid hourly space velocities (5-20 h-1) and temperatures (110-140 °C) at 10 bar of oxygen were tested. The experiments were conducted to provide the intrinsic performance of the catalysts. Complete aniline conversion, 90% TOC conversion, and 80% nitrogen mineralization were achieved at 140 °C and 5 h-1. Blank experiments yielded relatively low homogeneous aniline (<35%) and negligible TOC conversions. Fast deactivation of the catalysts was experienced due to leaching caused by complexation with aniline. Acidification of the solution with HCI (molar HCI to aniline ratio of 1.2) was necessary to avoid colloidization and leaching of the nanoparticulate catalyst components. An improved, exact analysis of surface Ostwald ripening of a collection of nanoparticles is presented in an effort to redefine the critical radius involved in the kinetic models of ripening. In a collection of supported particles of different sizes, the critical radius is the size of the particle that is in equilibrium with the surrounding adatom concentration. Such a particle neither grows nor shrinks due to Ostwald ripening, whereas larger particles grow and smaller particles shrink. We show that previous definitions of critical radius are applicable only for limiting regimes where the Kelvin equation has been linearized. We propose a more universally applicable definition of critical radius that satisfies the constraints of mass balance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The incorporation of nanostructures into nanoelectronic and nanoelectromechanical systems is a long sought-after goal. In the present article, we report the first torsional electromechanical measurements of pure inorganic nanotubes. The WS2 nanotubes exhibited a complex and reproducible electrical response to mechanical deformation. We combined these measurements with density-functional-tight-binding calculations to understand the interplay between mechanical deformation, specifically torsion and tension, and electrical properties of WS2 nanotubes. This yielded the understanding that the electrical response to mechanical deformation may span several orders of magnitude on one hand and detect several modes of mechanical deformation simultaneously on the other. These results demonstrate that inorganic nanotubes could thus be attractive building blocks for nanoelectromechanical systems such as highly sensitive nanometric motion sensors.

We report the first transistor based on inorganic nanotubes exhibiting mobility values of up to 50 cm(2) V(-1) s(-1) for an individual WS2 nanotube. The current-carrying capacity of these nanotubes was surprisingly high with respect to other low-dimensional materials, with current density at least 2.4 × 10(8) A cm(-2). These results demonstrate that inorganic nanotubes are promising building blocks for high-performance electronic applications.

The pool of peptides composing a protein allows for its distinctive identification in a process named fingerprint (FP) analysis. Here, the FP concept is used to develop a method for the rational preparation of molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) for protein recognition. The fingerprint imprinting (FIP) is based on the following: (1) the in silico cleavage of the protein sequence of interest with specific agents; (2) the screening of all the peptide sequences generated against the UniProtKB database in order to allow for the rational selection of distinctive and unique peptides (named as epitopes) of the target protein; (3) the selected epitopes are synthesized and used as templates for the molecular imprinting process. To prove the principle, NT-proBNP, a marker of the risk of cardiovascular events, was chosen as an example. The in silico analysis of the NT-proBNP sequence allowed us to individuate the peptide candidates, which were next used as templates for the preparation of NT-pro-BNP-specific FIPs and tested for their ability to bind the NT-proBNP peptides in complex samples. Results indicated an imprinting factor, IF, of ~10, a binding capacity of 0.5-2 mg/g, and the ability to rebind 40% of the template in a complex sample, composed of the whole digests of NT-proBNP.

Nanoparticles of materials with layered structure are able to spontaneously form closed-cage nanostructures such as nested fullerene-like nanoparticles and nanotubes. This propensity has been demonstrated in a large number of compounds such as WS(2), NiCl(2), and others. Layered metal oxides possess a higher ionic character and consequently are stiffer and cannot be evenly folded. Vanadium pentoxide (V(2)O(5)), a layered metal oxide, has received much attention due to its attractive qualities in numerous applications such as catalysis and electronic and optical devices and as an electrode material for lithium rechargeable batteries. The synthesis by pulsed laser ablation (PLA) of V(2)O(5) hollow nanoparticles, which are closely (nearly) associated with inorganic "fullerene-like" (NIF-V(2)O(5)) nanoparticles, but not quite as perfect, is reported in the present work. The relation between the PLA conditions and the NIF-V(2)O(5) morphology is elucidated. A new mechanism leading to hollow nanostructure via crystallization of lower density amorphous nanoparticles is proposed. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) is used extensively in conjunction with structural modeling of the NIF-V(2)O(5) in order to study the complex 3-D structure of the NIF-V(2)O(5) nanoparticles. This structure was shown to be composed of facets with their low-energy surfaces pointing outward and seamed by defective domains. These understandings are used to formulate a formation mechanism and may improve the function of V(2)O(5) in its many uses through additional morphological control. Furthermore, this study outlines which properties are required from layered compounds to fold into perfectly closed-cage IF nanoparticles.

A practical optical sensing system for the determination of chloramphenicol (CAP), utilizing molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) and HPLC, has been developed. The method is based on competitive displacement of a chloramphenicol-methyl red (CAP-MR) dye conjugate from specific binding cavities in an imprinted polymer by the analyte. The best of these polymers was obtained using (diethylamino)ethyl methacrylate as functional monomer at a monomer:template ratio of 2:1. HPLC with a mobile phase containing CAP-MR was used as the detection system, and injection of CAP and, to a lesser degree, thiamphenicol resulted in proportional displacement of the conjugate, which was detected at 460 nm. The detection system showed a linear response over a range of 3-1000 μg/mL and effectively detected CAP extracted from serum. This system offers a tailor-made, selective, and rapid method for CAP detection, is able to discriminate between similar molecules, and is effective below and above the therapeutic range (10-20 μg/mL serum, potentially toxic above 25 μg/mL). This technique is quite general and should enable the use of MIPs in a wide variety of applications involving the detection of families of molecules which possess a distinct arrangement of functional groups.
