In this study we examine the radial dependence of the inertial and dissipation range indices, as well as the spectral break separating the inertial and dissipation range in power density spectra of interplanetary magnetic field fluctuations using {\it Parker Solar Probe} data from the fifth solar encounter between $\sim$0.1 and $\sim$0.7 au. The derived break wavenumber compares reasonably well with previous estimates at larger radial distances and is consistent with gyro-resonant damping of Alfv\'enic fluctuations by thermal protons. We find that the inertial scale power law index varies between approximately -1.65 and -1.45. This is consistent with either the Kolmogorov (-5/3) or Iroshnikov-Kraichnan (-3/2) values, has a very weak radial dependence with a possible hint that the spectrum becomes steeper closer to the Sun. The dissipation range power law index, however, has a clear dependence on radial distance (and turbulence age), decreasing from -3 near 0.7 au (4 days) to -4 [$\pm$0.3] at 0.1 au (0.75 days) closer to the Sun., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

Parker Solar Probe (PSP) and SolO data are utilized to investigate magnetic field intermittency in the solar wind (SW). Small-scale intermittency (20−100 d i ) is observed to radially strengthen when methods relying on higher-order moments are considered (SF q ; SDK), but no clear trend is observed at larger scales. However, lower-order moment-based methods (e.g., partial variance of increments; PVI) are deemed more appropriate for examining the evolution of the bulk of coherent structures (CSs), PVI ≥ 3. Using PVI, we observe a scale-dependent evolution in the fraction of the data set occupied by CSs, f PVI≥3. Specifically, regardless of the SW speed, a subtle increase is found in f PVI≥3 for ℓ = 20 d i , in contrast to a more pronounced radial increase in CSs observed at larger scales. Intermittency is investigated in relation to plasma parameters. Though, slower SW speed intervals exhibit higher f PVI≥6 and higher kurtosis maxima, no statistical differences are observed for f PVI≥3. Highly Alfvénic intervals display lower levels of intermittency. The anisotropy with respect to the angle between the magnetic field and SW flow, ΘVB is investigated. Intermittency is weaker at ΘVB ≈ 0° and is strengthened at larger angles. Considering the evolution at a constant alignment angle, a weakening of intermittency is observed with increasing advection time of the SW. Our results indicate that the strengthening of intermittency in the inner heliosphere is driven by the increase in comparatively highly intermittent perpendicular intervals sampled by the probes with increasing distance, an effect related directly to the evolution of the Parker spiral.

Nonthermal, pickup ions (PUIs) represent an energetic component of the solar wind (SW). While a number of theoretical models have been proposed to describe the PUI flow, of major importance are in situ measurements providing us with the vital source of model validation. The Solar Wind Ion Composition Spectrometer (SWICS) instrument on board the Ulysses spacecraft was specifically designed for this purpose. Zhang et al. proposed a new, accurate method for the derivation of ion velocity distribution function in the SW frame on the basis of count rates collected by SWICS. We calculate the moments of these distribution functions for protons (H+) and He+ ions along the Ulysses trajectory for a period of 2 months including the Halloween 2003 solar storm. This gives us the time distributions of PUI density and temperature. We compare these with the results obtained earlier for the same interval of time, in which the ion spectra are converted to the SW frame using the narrow-beam approximation. Substantial differences are identified, which are of importance for the interpretation of PUI distributions in the 3D, time-dependent heliosphere. We also choose one of the shocks crossed by Ulysses during this time interval and analyze the distribution functions and PUI bulk properties in front of and behind it. The results are compared with the test-particle calculations and diffusive shock acceleration theory.

A new era of exploration of the low radio frequency Universe from the Moon will soon be underway with landed payload missions facilitated by NASA's Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) program. CLPS landers are scheduled to deliver two radio science experiments, ROLSES to the nearside and LuSEE to the farside, beginning in 2021. These instruments would be pathfinders for a 10-km diameter interferometric array, FARSIDE, composed of 128 pairs of dipole antennas proposed to be delivered to the lunar surface later in the decade. ROLSES and LuSEE, operating at frequencies from 100 kHz to a few tens of MHz, will investigate the plasma environment above the lunar surface and measure the fidelity of radio spectra on the surface. Both use electrically-short, spiral-tube deployable antennas and radio spectrometers based upon previous flight models. ROLSES will measure the photoelectron sheath density to better understand the charging of the lunar surface via photoionization and impacts from the solar wind, charged dust, and current anthropogenic radio frequency interference. LuSEE will measure the local magnetic field and exo-ionospheric density, interplanetary radio bursts, Jovian and terrestrial natural radio emission, and the galactic synchrotron spectrum. FARSIDE, and its precursor risk-reduction six antenna-node array PRIME, would be the first radio interferometers on the Moon. FARSIDE would break new ground by imaging radio emission from Coronal Mass Ejections (CME) beyond 2 solar radii, monitor auroral radiation from the B-fields of Uranus and Neptune (not observed since Voyager), and detect radio emission from stellar CMEs and the magnetic fields of nearby potentially habitable exoplanets., 27 pages, 14 figures, 1 table, accepted for publication in The Planetary Science Journal. arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:1911.08649

FARSIDE (Farside Array for Radio Science Investigations of the Dark ages and Exoplanets) is a Probe-class concept to place a low radio frequency interferometric array on the farside of the Moon. A NASA-funded design study, focused on the instrument, a deployment rover, the lander and base station, delivered an architecture broadly consistent with the requirements for a Probe mission. This notional architecture consists of 128 dual polarization antennas deployed across a 10 km area by a rover, and tethered to a base station for central processing, power and data transmission to the Lunar Gateway. FARSIDE would provide the capability to image the entire sky each minute in 1400 channels spanning frequencies from 100 kHz to 40 MHz, extending down two orders of magnitude below bands accessible to ground-based radio astronomy. The lunar farside can simultaneously provide isolation from terrestrial radio frequency interference, auroral kilometric radiation, and plasma noise from the solar wind. This would enable near-continuous monitoring of the nearest stellar systems in the search for the radio signatures of coronal mass ejections and energetic particle events, and would also detect the magnetospheres for the nearest candidate habitable exoplanets. Simultaneously, FARSIDE would be used to characterize similar activity in our own solar system, from the Sun to the outer planets, including the hypothetical Planet Nine. Through precision calibration via an orbiting beacon, and exquisite foreground characterization, FARSIDE would also measure the Dark Ages global 21-cm signal at redshifts z=50-100. The unique observational window offered by FARSIDE would enable an abundance of additional science ranging from sounding of the lunar subsurface to characterization of the interstellar medium in the solar system neighborhood.

We present anisotropy results for anomalous cosmic-ray (ACR) protons in the energy range $\sim$0.5-35 MeV from Cosmic Ray Subsytem (CRS) data collected during calibration roll maneuvers for the magnetometer instrument when Voyager 2 (V2) was in the inner heliosheath. We use a new technique to derive for the first time the radial component of the anisotropy vector from CRS data. We find that the CRS-derived radial solar wind speeds, when converted from the radial components of the anisotropy vectors via the Compton-Getting (C-G) effect, generally agree with those similarly-derived speeds from the Low-Energy Charged Particle experiment using 28-43 keV data. However, they often differ significantly from the radial solar wind speeds measured directly by the Plasma Science (PLS) instrument. There are both periods when the C-G-derived radial solar wind speeds are significantly higher than those measured by PLS and times when they are significantly lower. The differences are not expected nor explained, but it appears that after a few years in the heliosheath the V2 radial solar wind speeds derived from the C-G method underestimate the true speeds as the spacecraft approaches the heliopause. We discuss the implications of this observation for the stagnation region reported along the Voyager 1 trajectory as it approached the heliopause inferred using the C-G method.

This Letter addresses the first Solar Orbiter (SO) -- Parker Solar Probe (PSP) quadrature, occurring on January 18, 2021, to investigate the evolution of solar wind from the extended corona to the inner heliosphere. Assuming ballistic propagation, the same plasma volume observed remotely in corona at altitudes between 3.5 and 6.3 solar radii above the solar limb with the Metis coronagraph on SO can be tracked to PSP, orbiting at 0.1 au, thus allowing the local properties of the solar wind to be linked to the coronal source region from where it originated. Thanks to the close approach of PSP to the Sun and the simultaneous Metis observation of the solar corona, the flow-aligned magnetic field and the bulk kinetic energy flux density can be empirically inferred along the coronal current sheet with an unprecedented accuracy, allowing in particular estimation of the Alfv\'en radius at 8.7 solar radii during the time of this event. This is thus the very first study of the same solar wind plasma as it expands from the sub-Alfv\'enic solar corona to just above the Alfv\'en surface., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures

The long-term evolution of the Sun's rotation period cannot be directly observed, and is instead inferred from trends in the measured rotation periods of other Sun-like stars. Assuming the Sun spins-down as it ages, following rotation rate $\propto$ age$^{-1/2}$, requires the current solar angular momentum-loss rate to be around $6\times 10^{30}$erg. Magnetohydrodynamic models, and previous observations of the solar wind (from the Helios and Wind spacecraft), generally predict a values closer to $1\times 10^{30}$erg or $3\times 10^{30}$erg, respectively. Recently, the Parker Solar Probe (PSP) observed tangential solar wind speeds as high as $\sim50$km/s in a localized region of the inner heliosphere. If such rotational flows were prevalent throughout the corona, it would imply that the solar wind angular momentum-loss rate is an order of magnitude larger than all of those previous estimations. In this letter, we evaluate the angular momentum flux in the solar wind, using data from the first two orbits of PSP. The solar wind is observed to contain both large positive (as seen during perihelion), and negative angular momentum fluxes. We analyse two solar wind streams that were repeatedly traversed by PSP; the first is a slow wind stream whose average angular momentum flux fluctuates between positive to negative, and the second is an intermediate speed stream containing a positive angular momentum flux (more consistent with a constant flow of angular momentum). When the data from PSP is evaluated holistically, the average equatorial angular momentum flux implies a global angular momentum-loss rate of around $2.6-4.2\times 10^{30}$ erg (which is more consistent with observations from previous spacecraft)., Comment: 11 pages + 6 figures, accepted for publication to ApJL

Reconnecting current sheets in the solar wind play an important role in the dynamics of the heliosphere and offer an opportunity to study magnetic reconnection exhausts under a wide variety of inflow and magnetic shear conditions. However, progress in understanding reconnection can be frustrated by the difficulty of finding events in long time-series data. Here we describe a new method to detect magnetic reconnection events in the solar wind based on machine learning, and apply it to Helios data in the inner heliosphere. The method searches for known solar wind reconnection exhaust features, and parameters in the algorithm are optimized to maximize the Matthews Correlation Coefficient using a training set of events and non-events. Applied to the whole Helios data set, the trained algorithm generated a candidate set of events that were subsequently verified by hand, resulting in a database of 88 events. This approach offers a significant reduction in construction time for event databases compared to purely manual approaches. The database contains events covering a range of heliospheric distances from ~0.3 to ~1 au, and a wide variety of magnetic shear angles, but is limited by the relatively coarse time resolution of the Helios data. Analysis of these events suggests that proton heating by reconnection in the inner heliosphere depends on the available magnetic energy in a manner consistent with observations in other regimes such as at the Earth's magnetopause, suggesting this may be a universal feature of reconnection.

A series of solar energetic particle (SEP) events were observed at Parker Solar Probe (PSP) by the Integrated Science Investigation of the Sun (IS☉IS) during the period from April 18, 2019 through April 24, 2019. The PSP spacecraft was located near 0.48 au from the Sun on Parker spiral field lines that projected out to 1 au within ∼25° of near Earth spacecraft. These SEP events, though small compared to historically large SEP events, were amongst the largest observed thus far in the PSP mission and provide critical information about the space environment inside 1 au during SEP events. During this period the Sun released multiple coronal mass ejections (CMEs). One of these CMEs observed was initiated on April 20, 2019 at 01:25 UTC, and the interplanetary CME (ICME) propagated out and passed over the PSP spacecraft. Observations by the Electromagnetic Fields Investigation (FIELDS) show that the magnetic field structure was mostly radial throughout the passage of the compression region and the plasma that followed, indicating that PSP did not directly observe a flux rope internal to the ICME, consistent with the location of PSP on the flank of the ICME. Analysis using relativistic electrons observed near Earth by the Electron, Proton and Alpha Monitor (EPAM) on the Advanced Composition Explorer (ACE) demonstrates the presence of flare-accelerated seed populations during the events observed. The energy spectrum of the IS☉IS observed seed population below 1 MeV is consistent with the superposition of acceleration processes near the limit of plasma stability. IS☉IS observations reveal the compression and acceleration of seed populations during the passage of the ICME, which is likely a key part of the pre-acceleration process that occurs close to the Sun and pre-conditions the energetic particle acceleration process.

The Integrated Science Investigation of the Sun (IS⊙IS) suite on board NASA’s Parker Solar Probe (PSP) observed six distinct enhancements in the intensities of suprathermal-through-energetic (∼0.03–3 MeV nucleon−1) He ions associated with corotating or stream interaction regions (CIR or SIR) during its first two orbits. Our results from a survey of the time histories of the He intensities, spectral slopes, and anisotropies and the event-averaged energy spectra during these events show the following: (1) In the two strongest enhancements, seen at 0.35 and 0.85 au, the higher-energy ions arrive and maximize later than those at lower energies. In the event seen at 0.35 au, the He ions arrive when PSP was away from the SIR trailing edge and entered the rarefaction region in the high-speed stream. (2) The He intensities either are isotropic or show sunward anisotropies in the spacecraft frame. (3) In all events, the energy spectra between ∼0.2 and 1 MeV nucleon−1 are power laws of the form ∝E −2. In the two strongest events, the energy spectra are well represented by flat power laws between ∼0.03 and 0.4 MeV nucleon−1 modulated by exponential rollovers between ∼0.4 and 3 MeV nucleon−1. We conclude that the SIR-associated He ions originate from sources or shocks beyond PSP’s location rather than from acceleration processes occurring at nearby portions of local compression regions. Our results also suggest that rarefaction regions that typically follow the SIRs facilitate easier particle transport throughout the inner heliosphere such that low-energy ions do not undergo significant energy loss due to adiabatic deceleration, contrary to predictions of existing models.

The charge state composition of the solar wind carries information about the electron temperature, density, and velocity of plasma in the solar corona that cannot always be measured with remote sensing techniques, due to limitations in instrumental sensitivity and field of view as well as line-of-sight integration issues. However, in situ measurements of the wind charge state distribution only provide the end result of the solar wind evolution from the source region to the freeze-in point. By using 3D global modeling it is possible to follow solar wind plasma parcels of different origin along the path of their journey and study the evolution of their charge states as well as the driving physical processes. For this purpose, we implemented nonequilibrium ionization calculations within the Space Weather Modeling Framework’s solar corona and inner heliosphere modules, to the Alfvén Wave Solar Model (AWSoM). The charge state calculations are carried out parallel to the AWSoM calculations, including all the elements and ions whose ionization-recombination rates are included in the CHIANTI database, namely, from H to Zn. In this work, we describe the implementation of the charge state calculation, and compare simulation results to in situ measurements from the Advanced Composition Explorer and Ulysses spacecraft, and study charge state evolution of plasma parcels along different wind trajectories and wind types.

One of the curious observations from the Voyagers is that the intensity of anomalous cosmic rays (ACRs) did not peak at the heliospheric termination shock (HTS) but instead a short distance (within ~1 au) downstream of the HTS. One possible explanation is that the interaction of the wavy heliospheric current sheet with the HTS enhances magnetic reconnection and generates numerous small-scale magnetic flux ropes in the heliosheath immediately downstream of the HTS. Charged particles are accelerated in this region due to Fermi acceleration and the reconnection electric field. In this work, we provide observational evidence of the presence of magnetic flux ropes in the heliosheath region just downstream of the HTS using a wavelet analysis of the reduced magnetic helicity and Grad–Shafranov reconstruction techniques. The Zank et al. kinetic transport theory for particles propagating through the magnetic islands region is employed to fit the observed energetic proton intensities in the post-HTS region. Our modeling results agree reasonably well with the observations, which suggests that stochastic acceleration via reconnection processes can explain the ACR proton peak beyond the HTS.

Here we present a statistical study of the ∼0.15–1.5 keV suprathermal electrons observed in uncompressed/compressed slow and fast solar wind around 59 corotating interaction regions (CIRs) with good measurements by Wind 3DP from 1995 through 1997. For each of these CIRs, we fit the strahl and halo energy spectra at ∼0.15–1.5 keV to a Kappa function with a Kappa index κ and kinetic temperature T eff. We find that the ∼0.15–1.5 keV strahl electrons behave similarly in both slow and fast wind: the strahl number density n s positively correlates with the solar wind electron temperature T e and interplanetary magnetic field magnitude ∣B∣, while the strahl pitch angle width Θ s decreases with the solar wind speed V sw. These suggest that the strahl electrons are generated by a similar/same process at the Sun in both slow and fast wind that produces these correlations, and the scattering efficiency of strahl in the interplanetary medium (IPM) decreases with V sw. The ∼0.15–1.5 keV halo electrons also behave similarly in both slow and fast wind: the halo parameter positively correlates with the corresponding strahl parameter, and the halo number density n h positively correlates only with T e . These indicate that the halo formation process in the IPM retains most of the strahl properties, but it erases the relationship between n s and ∣B∣. In addition, κ in compressed wind distributes similarly to that in uncompressed wind, for both the strahl and halo. It shows that CIRs at 1 au are not a significant/effective acceleration source for the strahl and halo.

In this paper, we present a provably positive, divergence-free constrained transport (CT) scheme to simulate the steady-state solar wind ambient with the three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamics numerical model. The positivity can be lost in two ways: one way is in the reconstruction process, and the other is in the updating process when the variables are advanced to the next time step. We adopt a self-adjusting strategy to bring the density and pressure into the permitted range in the reconstruction process, and use modified wave speeds in the Harten–Lax–van Leer flux to ensure the positivity in the updating process. The CT method can keep the magnetic fields divergence-free if the magnetic fields are divergence-free initially. Thus, we combine the least-squares reconstruction of the magnetic fields with the divergence-free constraints to make the magnetic fields globally solenoidal initially. Furthermore, we adopt a radial basis function method to interpolate variables at boundaries that can keep the magnetic field locally divergence-free. To verify the capability of the model in producing structured solar wind, the modeled results are compared with Parker Solar Probe (PSP) in situ observations during its first two encounters, as well as Wind observations at 1 au. Additionally, a solar maximum solar wind background is simulated to show the property of the model’s ability to preserve the positivity. The results show that the model can provide a relatively satisfactory comparison with PSP or Wind observations, and the divergence error is about 10−10 for all of the tests in this paper.

In this paper, we present an analysis of X-ray and optical/ultraviolet (UV) data from the favorable (Δ ∼ 0.077 au) 2018 apparition of comet 46P/Wirtanen. The comet was observed during three different epochs (before, during, and after perihelion) over a 1.5 month period using the X-Ray Telescope (XRT) and Ultraviolet and Optical Telescope (UVOT) instruments on board the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory and the Advanced CCD Imaging Spectrometer (ACIS) on board the Chandra X-ray Observatory. We clearly detected the comet’s charge exchange-induced emission during the first two epochs (F x = (11.2 ± 0.8) and (6.9 ± 0.5) × 10−13 erg cm−2 s−1, respectively), while only an upper limit on the flux could be placed for the third epoch (F x < 1.38 × 10−13 erg cm−2 s−1). As such, 46P/Wirtanen is one of the least luminous comets to be detected in X-rays. X-ray emission from the charge exchange between solar wind ions and the neutrals in the coma were analyzed against the water-production rate (Swift/UVOT) and space weather measurements. Further analyses of the emission features show that the solar wind properties inferred from the observed X-ray spectrum are in good agreement with those measured by the Advanced Composition Explorer (ACE) and Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) spacecraft, proving the approach is reliable for solar wind diagnostics. It is also found that, despite the variability of the comet’s properties (e.g., the water-production rate used as a neutrals density proxy), cometary X-ray emission is primarily modulated by the solar wind.

Without the intrinsic magnetic field, the solar wind interaction with Mars can be significantly different from the interaction with Earth and other magnetized planets. In this paper, we investigate how a global configuration of the magnetic structures, consisting of the bow shock, the induced magnetosphere, and the magnetotail, is modulated by the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) orientation. A 3D multispecies numerical model is established to simulate the interaction of solar wind with Mars under different IMF directions. The results show that the shock size including the subsolar distance and the terminator radius increases with Parker spiral angle, as is the same case with the magnetotail radius. The location and shape of the polarity reversal layer and inverse polarity reversal layer in the induced magnetotail are displaced to the y < 0 sector for a nonzero flow-aligned IMF component, consistent with previous analytical solutions and observations. The responses of the Martian global magnetic configuration to the different IMF directions suggest that the external magnetic field plays an important role in the solar wind interaction with unmagnetized planets.

Recent Parker Solar Probe (PSP) observations of inner heliospheric plasma have shown an abundant presence of Alfvénic polarity reversal of the magnetic field, known as “switchbacks.” While their origin is still debated, their role in driving the solar wind turbulence has been suggested through analysis of the spectral properties of magnetic fluctuations. Here, we provide a complementary assessment of their role in the turbulent cascade. The validation of the third-order linear scaling of velocity and magnetic fluctuations in intervals characterized by a high occurrence of switchbacks suggests that, irrespective of their local or remote origin, these structures are actively embedded in the turbulent cascade, at least at the radial distances sampled by PSP during its first perihelion. The stronger positive energy transfer rate observed in periods with a predominance of switchbacks indicates that they act as a mechanism injecting additional energy in the turbulence cascade.

The spatial distribution of energetic protons contributes to the understanding of magnetospheric dynamics. Based upon 17 yr of the Cluster/RAPID observations, we have derived machine-learning-based models to predict the proton intensities at energies from 28 to 962 keV in the 3D terrestrial magnetosphere at radial distances between 6 and 22 RE. We used the satellite location and indices for solar, solar wind, and geomagnetic activity as predictors. The results demonstrate that the neural network (multi-layer perceptron regressor) outperforms baseline models based on the k-nearest neighbors and historical binning on average by ∼80% and ∼33%, respectively. The average correlation between the observed and predicted data is about 56%, which is reasonable in light of the complex dynamics of fast-moving energetic protons in the magnetosphere. In addition to a quantitative analysis of the prediction results, we also investigate parameter importance in our model. The most decisive parameters for predicting proton intensities are related to the location—Z geocentric solar ecliptic direction—and the radial distance. Among the activity indices, the solar wind dynamic pressure is the most important. The results have a direct practical application, for instance, for assessing the contamination particle background in the X-ray telescopes for X-ray astronomy orbiting above the radiation belts. Computer-assisted tomography (CAT) for interplanetary scintillation (IPS) observations enables the determination of the global distribution of solar wind speed. We compared solar wind speeds derived from the CAT analysis of IPS observations between 1985 and 2019 with in situ observations conducted by the near-Earth and Ulysses spacecraft. From this comparison, we found that solar wind speeds from the IPS observations for 2009–2019 were systematically higher than the in situ observations, whereas those for the period until 2008 were in good agreement with the in situ observations. Further, we found that the discrepancy between IPS and the in situ observations is improved by changing the power index of the empirical relation between the solar wind speed and density fluctuations. The CAT analysis using an optimal value for the power index determined from the comparison between IPS and in situ observations revealed long-term variations in the solar wind speed distribution over three cycles, leading to a better understanding of the time-varying global heliosphere. We found that polar solar winds become highly anisotropic at the Cycle 24/25 minimum, which is a peculiar aspect of this minimum. The IPS observations showed general agreement with the Parker Solar Probe observations around the perihelion of Orbit 1; this supports the reliability of the CAT analysis. The results of this study suggest that the physical properties of solar wind microturbulence may vary with a long-term decline in the solar activity, which provides important implication on the solar wind acceleration.

Ulysses data obtained at high solar latitudes during periods of minimum solar activity in 1994 and 2007 are examined to determine the relation between velocity structures called microstreams and folds in the magnetic field called switchbacks. A high correlation is found. The possibility of velocity peaks in microstreams originating from coronal X-ray jets is re-examined; we now suggest that microstreams are the consequence of the alternation of patches of switchbacks and quiet periods, where the switchbacks could be generated by minifilament/flux rope eruptions that cause coronal jets.

We present a method that isolates time-varying components from coronagraph and EUV images, allowing sub-streamer transients propagating within streamers to be tracked from the low to high corona. The method uses a temporal bandpass filter with a transmission bandwidth of ~2.5-10 hours that suppresses both high and low frequency variations in observations made by the STEREO/SECCHI suite. We demonstrate that this method proves crucial in linking the low corona where the magnetic field is highly non-radial, to their counterparts in the high corona where the magnetic field follows a radial path through the COR1 instrument. We also applied our method to observations by the COR2 and EUVI instruments onboard SECCHI and produced height-time profiles that revealed small density enhancements, associated with helmet streamers, propagating from ~1.2 Rs out to beyond 5 Rs. Our processing method reveals that these features are common during the period of solar minimum in this study. The features recur on timescales of hours, originate very close to the Sun, and remain coherent out into interplanetary space. We measure the speed of the features and classify them as: slow (a few to tens of km/s) and fast (~100 km/s). Both types of features serve as an observable tracer of a variable component of the slow solar wind to its source regions. Our methodology helps overcome the difficulties in tracking small-scale features through COR1. As a result, it proved successful in measuring the connectivity between the low and high corona and in measuring velocities of small-scale features., 14 pages, 7 figures

For more than 12 hr beginning on 2021 January 18, continuous narrowband electrostatic emissions were observed on the Parker Solar Probe near 20 solar radii. The observed −1, these electrostatic emissions are interpreted as ion-acoustic waves. Their observation demonstrates a new regime of instability and evolution of oblique ion-acoustic waves that have not been reported previously in theory or experiment.

In this paper, by performing a two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulation, we investigate magnetic reconnection in the downstream of a quasi-perpendicular shock. The shock is nonstationary, and experiences a cyclic reformation. At the beginning of reformation process, the shock front is relatively flat, and part of upstream ions are reflected by the shock front. The reflected ions move upward in the action of Lorentz force, which leads to the upward bending of magnetic field lines at the foot of the shock front, and then a current sheet is formed due to the squeezing of the bending magnetic field lines. The formed current sheet is brought toward the shock front by the solar wind, and the shock front becomes irregular after interacting with the current sheet. Both the current sheet brought by the solar wind and the current sheet associated with the shock front are then fragmented into many small filamentary current sheets. Electron-scale magnetic reconnection may occur in several of these filamentary current sheets when they are convected into the downstream, and magnetic islands are generated. A strong reconnection electric field and energy dissipation are also generated around the X line, and high-speed electron outflow is also formed.

The role of solar wind expansion in generating whistler waves is investigated using the EB-iPic3D code, which models solar wind expansion self-consistently within a fully kinetic semi-implicit approach. The simulation is initialized with an electron velocity distribution function modeled after observations of the Parker Solar Probe during its first perihelion at 0.166 au, consisting of a dense core and an antisunward strahl. This distribution function is initially stable with respect to kinetic instabilities. Expansion drives the solar wind into successive regimes where whistler heat flux instabilities are triggered. These instabilities produce sunward whistler waves initially characterized by predominantly oblique propagation with respect to the interplanetary magnetic field. The excited waves interact with the electrons via resonant scattering processes. As a consequence, the strahl pitch angle distribution broadens and its drift velocity reduces. The strahl electrons are scattered in the direction perpendicular to the magnetic field, and an electron halo is formed. At a later stage, resonant electron firehose instability is triggered and further affects the electron temperature anisotropy as the solar wind expands. Wave–particle interaction processes are accompanied by a substantial reduction of the solar wind heat flux. The simulated whistler waves are in qualitative agreement with observations in terms of wave frequencies, amplitudes, and propagation angles. Our work proposes an explanation for the observations of oblique and parallel whistler waves in the solar wind. We conclude that solar wind expansion has to be factored in when trying to explain kinetic processes at different heliocentric distances.

In this work we have, for the first time, applied the interpretation of multiple “ghost-fronts” to two synthetic coronal mass ejections (CMEs) propagating within a structured solar wind using the Heliospheric Upwind eXtrapolation time (HUXt) solar wind model. The two CMEs occurred on 2012 June 13–14 showing multiple fronts in images from Solar Terrestrial Relations Observatory Heliospheric Imagers (HIs). The HUXt model is used to simulate the evolution of these CMEs across the inner heliosphere as they interacted with structured ambient solar wind. The simulations reveal that the evolution of CME shape is consistent with observations across a wide range of solar latitudes and that the manifestation of multiple “ghost-fronts” within HIs’ field of view is consistent with the positions of the nose and flank of the same CME structure. This provides further confirmation that the angular separation of these features provides information on the longitudinal extent of a CME. For one of the CMEs considered in this study, both simulations and observations show that a concave shape develops within the outer CME front. We conclude that this distortion results from a latitudinal structure in the ambient solar wind speed. The work emphasizes that the shape of the CME cannot be assumed to remain a coherent geometrical shape during its propagation in the heliosphere. Our analysis demonstrates that the presence of “ghost” CME fronts can be used to infer the distortion of CMEs by ambient solar wind structure as a function of both latitude and longitude. This information has the potential to improve the forecasting of space weather events at Earth.
