A TiO2/graphene quantum dots composite (TiO2/GQDs) obtained by in situ synthesis of GQDs, derived from coffee grounds, and peroxo titanium complexes was used as electrode modifier in the simultaneous electrochemical determination of uric acid and hypoxanthine. The TiO2/GQDs material was characterized by photoluminescence, X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, and energy-dispersive X-ray mapping. The TiO2/GQDs-GCE exhibits better electrochemical activity for uric acid and hypoxanthine than GQDs/GCE or TiO2/GCE in differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) measurements. Under optimized conditions, the calibration plots were linear in the range from 1.00 to 15.26 μM for both uric acid and hypoxanthine. The limits of detection of this method were 0.58 and 0.68 μM for uric acid and hypoxanthine, respectively. The proposed DPV method was employed to determine uric acid and hypoxanthine in urine samples with acceptable recovery rates.

This study explored early childhood student teachers of color's (ECSToCs) development of cultural competence during their fieldwork experience. Nine female students of color enrolled in an early childhood education fieldwork course participated in this study. Employing a qualitative research methods approach, we analyzed multiple data including students' reflection papers on culture and diversity, teaching philosophy papers, interview transcripts, lesson plans on cultural diversity, and post-teaching reflection. The findings showed: (a) ECSToCs' perceptions of culture were highly influenced by their lived experiences including their bilingual, bicultural, and schooling experiences; (b) ECSToCs' awareness of and attitude toward diversity were implicated by their parents' lived experiences and knowledge; and (c) they viewed culture as a pedagogical and methodological tool to guide their teaching practices, emphasizing asset-based approach. This study contributes to developing effective instructional strategies to elevate ECSToCs' cultural competence in their teaching.

However, the COVID-19 pandemic has imposed remote teaching on EC practitioners and complicated practicum students' fieldwork experiences. This study explored EC practicum students' fieldwork experiences in the U.S. during the pandemic and their preparedness for online teaching and technology employment and integration. Participants included 28 students enrolled in "Directed Field Experience" in Spring 2021. A mixed-methods approach incorporating multiple sources of data, including reflection papers, interviews, and questionnaires, was used. The findings showed that the EC practicum students changed their perceptions of and attitudes toward a remote field experience course and online teaching with young children over the semester. Additionally, EC practicum students' challenges and professional and academic growth were evident in their reporting. These findings have implications for the development of effective strategies for alleviating EC practicum students' challenges, facilitating their professional growth, and providing resources to integrate digital technology in their teaching in developmentally appropriate ways.

Using the dimerization of sesamol as a model reaction, insights into the reaction mechanism were gained via operando Raman spectroscopy. Purpose: SARS‐CoV‐2 infection can result in genitourinary symptoms, such as frequency, urgency, nocturia, and pain/pressure. In this study, we followed the progression of overactive bladder (OAB) symptoms in patients that reported new or worsening OAB symptoms after coronavirus disease‐19 (COVID‐19) diagnosis. Materials and Methods: Individuals from a COVID‐19 serology study were invited to participate in a follow‐up study. Respondents were divided into three groups based on prior COVID‐19 testing. Patients scored symptoms retrospectively before the pandemic, at study onset, and prospectively during 12‐month follow‐up. Genitourinary symptoms were assessed using international consultation on incontinence questionaire for OAB (ICIQ‐OAB). Change in ICIQ‐OAB scores from baseline were calculated. The minimal important difference of one on ICIQ‐OAB is considered a significant change. Results: 26.0% of participants previously had positive COVID polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test (PCR+), 5.6% a positive serology test only (Ser+), and 65.5% were COVID naïve (COVID−). 23.8% of participants reported a significant increase in ICIQ‐OAB score at study onset compared to prepandemic. ICIQ‐OAB scores were similar at prepandemic but significantly higher at study start (p < 0.001) in PCR+ group. During follow‐up, change in ICIQ‐OAB scores from baseline remained unchanged for COVID− group, but gradually reduced for PCR+, reaching similar levels as COVID− group by 12 months. By 12 months, 71.4% of PCR+, 42.9% of Ser+, and 68.8% of COVID− participants still reported significant increase in ICIQ‐OAB scores. Conclusions: Most COVID‐19 patients experienced return of symptoms to baseline, indicative of the potential resolution of COVID‐associated cystitis. A subset of cases did not, raising questions about the underlying factors contributing to this outcome. Additional research is needed to assess long COVID on urological health. We investigate the Peterson hit problem for the polynomial algebra 퓟n, viewed as a graded left module over the mod-2 Steenrod algebra, 퓐. For n > 4, this problem is still unsolved, even in the case of n = 5 with the help of computers. In this article, we study the hit problem for the case n = 6 in the generic degree dr = 6(2r − 1) + 4.2r with r an arbitrary non-negative integer. By considering ℤ2 as a trivial 퓐-module, then the hit problem is equivalent to the problem of finding a basis of ℤ2-vector space ℤ2 ⊗퓐퓟n. The main goal of the current article is to explicitly determine an admissible monomial basis of the ℤ2 vector space ℤ2 ⊗퓐퓟6 in some degrees. The article explores the growing issue of workplace violence against healthcare providers, with a specific focus on the urology department at the Cleveland Clinic. It highlights an increase in incidents of violence, including assaults and injuries, from 2018 to 2023. The article emphasizes that female healthcare providers are particularly vulnerable to harassment and violence from patients. It suggests various strategies to address workplace violence, such as reporting systems, training modules, enhanced security, and guidelines for terminating the patient-physician relationship when necessary. To be effective, the battle against COVID-19 and other pandemics must address the social dimensions of the crisis. The objective of this study was to assess whether negative attitudes toward elite knowledge were associated with vaccine hesitancy in the United States during COVID-19. Attitudes toward elite knowledge were assessed using three measures: (a) the Epistemological Style Inventory's 'naive realism' subscale, (b) a measure about supporting education to foster understanding of politics, and (c) a populism scale. Vaccine hesitancy was measured using a 9-item adaptation of the Vaccine Hesitancy Scale used by the World Health Organization. Multiple regression results revealed that naïve realism (.184, p <.001) and populism (.356, p <.001) were positively associated with vaccine hesitancy, while support of political education (−.296, p <.001) was negatively associated with vaccine hesitancy. These results indicate that to fully understand vaccine hesitancy, the role of attitudes toward elite knowledge must be considered. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Pennywort [Centella asiatica (L.) Urban] is a herbaceous perennial crop. Heavy metals (HMs) are considered to significantly influence the growth, yield, and quality of pennywort. The present study evaluated the adsorption efficiency of residue-based biochar and organic fertilizer on pennywort dry matter yield and removal of heavy metals (Cd and Pb) within soil-plant system. The laboratory and pot studies were set up in a protected warehouse following randomized complete block design with four replicates. Biochar prepared from pyrolysis of rice husk and peanut shell residues along with organic fertilizer (rice husk+peanut shell) was applied at different rates viz. 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5% on weight basis. The dry matter and economic yield, soil and plant HMs contents were recorded using appropriate procedures. Rice husk biochar (RHBC) showed the highest adsorption efficacy in removal of Cd and Pb from soil. This potential of biochar and organic fertilizer was also reflected in pot study where application of these organic adsorbents significantly (p<0.05) reduced the HMs in soil and shoot of pennywort. Application of 5% peanut shell biochar (PSBC) produced highest dry matter yield of pennywort, while application of 5% RHBC reduced Cd by 26.4% and 33.9% Pb from soil and 81.0% Cd and 60.9% Pb in pennywort shoot. Thus, RHBC with high adsorption efficiency can be a promising alternative source in reducing the HMs accumulation in the soil-plant system. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

For the first time, phytochemical constituents of the leaves of Heptapleurum ellipticum were investigated. One rare new 2,28-bidesmosidic lupane-type saponin, named heptaellipside A ( 1 ), along with four other lupane-type analogs ( 2-5 ) were purified by combining differently chromatographic methods. All of the separated compounds ( 1-5 ) were communicated for the first time from H. ellipticum . The structures of them were definitely illustrated following extensive and comprehensive UV/VIS, FTIR, HRMS/ESI, and NMR techniques. Further, all isolated compounds were evaluated for their α -glucosidase and α -amylase inhibition. As the results, compound 3 respectively exhibited stronger in both inhibitory activities against α -glucosidase and α -amylase (IC 50 values of 15.53 and 26.93 μM), than the acarbose standard (IC 50 values of 214.50 and 143.48 μM).
