This book tracks changes in the use of metadiscourse in Chinese scholars'English and Chinese research articles, discusses how these changes reflect changes in Chinese scholars'interactions with their peers in China and outside China, and analyzes how Chinese scholars are responding to changes in the academic context that embrace and shape rhetorical practices in the academic world. Around the turn of the twenty-first century, the Chinese government declared the goal of “enhancing international soft power,” and one important way to achieve this goal is to promote China's global academic influence. China has indeed made remarkable strides in terms of academic output by publishing Chinese scholars'research papers and monographs around the world. However, “international soft power” means more than just the export of papers or books; it means connecting to and participating in the academic world. For this to happen, Chinese scholars must get to know their international counterparts, understand their rhetorical preferences, and be willing (and able) to accommodate their needs.

This book approaches cultural conceptualizations of our modern world from cultural, linguistic and cognitive perspectives. It explores broader topics such as contemporary society, media and entertainment, migration and identity, political discourse, educational contexts and creative linguistic innovation, all of which are seen as interwoven and mutually complementary segments of our present-day social world. This publication brings a fresh multi-cultural approach reflected in applying the principles of cultural linguistics to the analysis of different aspects of language use across four continents – Europe, Asia, Africa and Australia. The issue of shared cultural conceptualizations being their common denominator, the chapters of this book shed light on how various cultural groups use language to communicate their ideas and beliefs both within and outside their own culture, bearing in mind the often contradictory nature of the present-day social world that, at the same time, unites and disintegrates social groups. Die Herausgebenden legen mit „Globale Soziologie“ einen Band vor, der in Debatten um die Dekolonisierung der Disziplin interveniert. Sie vereinen Beiträge, die anhand dreier Fragenkomplexe die international bereits geebneten, im deutschsprachigen Raum jedoch kaum betretenen Wege zu einer Globalen Soziologie aufzeigen und erweitern. Sie stellen zunächst die Geschichte der Soziologie auf den Prüfstand und fragen, von welchen Standpunkten aus „klassische“ Theorien entworfen wurden und wessen Lebensrealitäten sie erfassen und adressieren. Insbesondere die ungleichen Voraussetzungen in der Konstruktion und Zirkulation von „Klassikern“ bei institutionell hergestellter Unsichtbarkeit anderer Werke finden Berücksichtigung. Zweitens gehen die Beiträge des Buchs der Frage nach, welche epistemologischen und methodologischen Schlüsse sich aus diesen historiographischen und theoretischen Kritiken und Rekonstruktionen ziehen lassen. Sie erarbeiten Vorschläge, die einen erkenntnistheoretischen Wandelhin zu einer reflexiven, multiperspektivischen und global verflochtenen Soziologie begründen und fortführen können. Die seit rund zwanzig Jahren in ganz Lateinamerika gegründeten „Interkulturellen Universitäten“ erheben gegenüber den Hochschulen euroamerikanischer Tradition den Anspruch einer „alternativen“ Forschung und Lehre. Die Arbeit analysiert, wie solche Universitäten lokale und indigene Wissenstraditionen in Dialog mit „westlichen“ Wissenschaftsdiskursen zu bringen und damit Wissen interkulturell zu konstruieren suchen. This book is an original study of Cold Rush, an accelerated race for the extraction and protection of Arctic natural resources. The Northernmost reach of the planet is caught up in the double developments of two unfinished forces – rapidly progressing climate change and global economic investment - working simultaneously in tension and synergy. Neither process is linear or complete, but both are contradictory and open-ended. This book traces the multiplicity of Cold Rush in the Finnish Arctic, a high-stakes ecological, economic, and political hotspot. It is a heterogeneous space, understood as indigenous land within local indigenous Sámi people politics, the last frontier from a colonial perspective, and a periphery under the modernist nation-state regime. It is now transforming into an economic hub under global capitalism, intensifying climate change and unforeseen geo-political changes. Based on six years of ethnography, the book shows how people struggle, strategize, and profit from this ongoing, complex, and multidirectional change. The author offers a new theoretical approach called critical assemblage analysis, which provides an alternative way of exploring the dynamics between language and society by examining the interaction between material, discursive, and affective dimensions of Cold Rush. The approach builds on previous work at the intersection of critical discourse analysis, critical sociolinguistics, nexus analysis and ethnography, but expands toward works by philosophers Michel Foucault, Gilles Deleuze, and Felix Guattari. This book will be of interest to researchers on language, discourse, and sociolinguistics interested in engaging with social critique embedded in global capitalism and accelerating climate change; as well as researchers in the social and human sciences and natural sciences, who are increasingly aware of the fact that the theoretical and analytical move beyond the traditional dichotomies like language/society, nature/human and micro/macro is central to understanding today´s complex, intertwined social, political, economic and ecological processes.

In diesem Buch wird beschrieben, wie Forscher:innen in der Zeit des Kalten Kriegs die Meinungen von Expert:innen nutzten, um Prognosen über Entwicklungen von geopolitischer Bedeutung zu konstruieren. Am Beispiel der RAND Corporation, einer US-amerikanischen Denkfabrik mit engen Beziehungen zu Militär und Pentagon, analysiert der Autor die Entwicklung von zwei Prognosetechniken, der Delphi-Befragung und dem politischen Planspiel. Auf der Grundlage von Archivrecherchen und Interviews untersuchen die Kapitel die Entwicklung dieser Techniken. Dabei wird freigelegt, wie zeitgenössische Sozialwissenschaftler:innen eine der zentralen Kategorien der Kultur des Kalten Krieges, nämlich jene der:s Expert:in, auffassten. Die damals entwickelten Methoden der Sozialprognose dienen somit als Quellen einer breiteren Erörterung des Stellenwerts von Wissen und Wissenschaft in der Gesellschaft zur Zeit des Kalten Kriegs.

Kanonische Studien im Professionalisierungsdiskurs der Sozialen Arbeit legen den Schluss nahe, dass nicht vorausgesetzt werden kann, dass Hochschulabsolvent•innen einschlägiger Fachstudiengänge der Sozialen Arbeit die Entwicklung von Professionalität per se als sinnhaftes berufliches Entwicklungsziel für sich akzeptieren. Das bedeutet jedoch nicht, dass Professionalität für Praktiker•innen per se kein relevantes Thema darstellt. Anzunehmen ist eher, dass Professionalität für sie mit spezifischen Relevanzen besetzt ist. Der Autor rekonstruiert in dieser qualitativen Studie mit einer Triangulation von zwei hermeneutischen Methoden, wie Praktiker•innen der Sozialen Arbeit ihr professionelles Selbstverständnis als subjektive Vorstellungen von Professionalität narrativ konstruieren. Das Interesse der Studie gilt darüber hinaus der Frage, welche bildhaften Sinnstiftungsmuster diese Konstruktion sinnhaft anleiten. Der Blick auf professionelle Selbstverständnisse als Sinnkonstruktionen und Ordnungsleistungen des Individuums schärft den Blick dafür, unter welchen Bedingungen Professionalität für Praktiker•innen der Sozialen Arbeit zu einem sinnstiftenden Projekt wird, in das es sich in Form von Zeit, Energie, Fortbildung, Reflexion, etc. zu investieren lohnt. Die Arbeit elaboriert den Begriff des professionellen Selbstverständnisses als analytisches Konzept für den Professionalisierungsdiskurs Sozialer Arbeit.

This open access book explores schooling from the perspective of children via data from a longitudinal life-history study. It questions whether schooling creates an environment where all children to flourish; or whether a policy focus on attainment in mathematics and English hinders some children's wellbeing and learning. By drawing on the children's life-history narratives and their ideas, the chapters also portray children's realistic suggestions for practices that meet the needs of diverse children and strengthen their comprehensive wellbeing and learning within schooling.

This book provides an accessible overview of one particular type of social panic: that of the phantom attacker. Such panics are characterised by outbreaks of sensational claims of attacks by mysterious figures that seem to emerge from nowhere, attack their innocent human and animal victims, only to vanish without a trace. Taking the recent wave of needle-spiking reports in Europe as a starting point, this book does more than just catalogue such outbreaks historically and geographically. It also ties the phenomenon of phantom assailants to the moral panics literature. Meticulously investigating archival sources, the authors examine the social construction of social panics and unearth the parallels between contemporary episodes and historical antecedents in Europe, North America, Asia and Africa. Focusing on the sociohistorical and -cultural context, they uncover the role of mass media in creating and perpetuating these panics, which respond to anxieties pervading societies at particular points in history. This book uses sociolinguistic approaches to explore how media discourse on undocumented migration informs Morocco-Spain political relations. Historically, much of the contact between these two nations has been through conquest - first through the Umayyad Caliphate taking control of the Iberian Peninsula (then called Hispania) in the 8th century, and then through Spain's occupation of northern Morocco in the 20th century. Though these historical roots have undoubtedly played a role in shaping present-day Morocco-Spain relations, migration has also become another critical element, as the majority of legally authorized migration to Spain comes from Morocco. Additionally, Morocco serves as a sojourn for much of the undocumented migration to the Spanish autonomous cities of Ceuta and Melilla, both of which are enclaves in Morocco and common entry points for North African and Sub-Saharan African immigrants. Migration to Ceuta and Melilla has therefore become a flashpoint for anti-immigration attitudes that are frequently perpetuated in political and media discourse. The author uses these cities as a case study, situating them within the wider context of both immigration-related policies and news articles in order to examine how migration is represented in Spain and Morocco. The book connects media discourse with policy discourse, and addresses how these mediums (1) co-construct anti-immigration and xenophobic ideologies, and (2) shape and are shaped by the somewhat strained relations between Spain and Morocco. This book will be of interest to students and scholars of Discourse Analysis, Sociolinguistics, Migration Studies and Migration Policy, Media Studies and Political Communication.

The concept of la chance accounts for everyday knowledge production in uncertain contexts in Bamako, Mali, where university graduates constitute an educational elite strongest affected by unemployment. Graduates know that la chance decides whether they succeed or fail. Susann Ludwig shows that this concept embodies common sense as much as it offers the possibility of the extraordinary. Graduates play »the game of la chance«, in which success is defined by a continuation of play rather than an end goal. Providing an explorative experience to the reader, this study accounts for the elusiveness of la chance in the Bamako context and beyond.

Watzlawick schreibt sogar, man könne nicht nicht kommunizieren. Die hier vorgelegte Aufsatzsammlung vereint eine Reihe von Beiträgen, die im Laufe der Jahre in höchst unterschiedlichen Kontexten entstanden sind. Das Thema Kommunikation war oft nicht das Zentrum. Viele Texte entstanden ursprünglich auch in interdisziplinären Kolloquien. Die Arbeiten hier zusammenzufügen entspringt der Absicht, eine vorher teilweise latente Sinnlinie freizulegen. Man könnte von einer Transformation von Publikationen in Spolien sprechen. Das Hauptanliegen ist, einige bislang eher wenig behandelte Horizonte des Themas ins Auge zu fassen, Ränder sozusagen oder Sonderaspekte. Dieser Horizont erscheint bisweilen als Kaleidoskop.

While all oppressions are equal, some are more equal than others. This statement, borrowed from George Orwell's Animal Farm and written and marinated to fit within and without our call for ethical research, helps us to see how contemporary research processes are singular and fail to account for the complex histories, realities and values of marginalized communities. Such a failure to account and re/member has had massive symbolic and material consequences on marginalized communities, illustrated by the number of deaths we continue to witness everyday. Those deaths have been sanctioned and authorized by the ways in which we come to know what we know and how that is imprinted in our policies and everyday existence. This book looks at knowledge production as a process of giving an account of those losses, in ways that help knowledge production to be a mechanism of remembering (cognitive) and re/membering (communi/ity or bring together/solidarity/ a form of epistemological and ontological demonstration). Ethical knowledge production becomes a process of relationship that remembers the histories, values and realities of people in ways that are transformative and political. Such an expression fails to arrive at an end, and rather recognizes knowledge production as endless production of knowledge. Such a process goes against neoliberal mechanism of commodifying knowledge for sale in the market. This edited collection attempts to engage with current qualitative research methodologies and approaches from a critically and ethically reflexive standpoint. This work seeks to unravel colonial practices that continue to hide within qualitative approaches in ways that invite a new reimagining of working within and without qualitative method/ologies. This edited collection therefore seeks to bring to the fore the lived experiences of the studied to their storied life in ways that are ethically and politically congruent. This work therefore seeks to bring forth Foucault's subterranean narratives steeped in contexts and experiences that can critically invert the dominant (colonial, capitalist, state) practices in existing research.

Since Edward Said's publication of Orientalism in 1978, so-called Western social theory and its claim to universal analytical validity has been exposed to severe criticism. Scholars from the field of postcolonial studies were most vocal in criticizing the Eurocentric nature of the conceptual apparatus of the social sciences. Indeed, contemporary social theory almost exclusively refers to the historical experiences of Western Europe and North America. Yet what is the alternative to these Eurocentric frameworks? Many postcolonial critics use very few non-English sources and tend to focus on the deconstruction of European and American theories. The chapters of this volume provide a turn of perspective. The authors critically reflect upon the concepts of so-called Western social theory by engaging with social science literature and social theory in Arabic. Questions addressed include: What are the concepts, themes, and historical narratives in contemporary Arabic social theory? In which ways do Arab social theorists provide us with alternatives to the conceptual apparatuses employed by so-called Western social theory? To what extent are Arab and Western social theories entangled with each other?

Das wissenssoziologisch-diskursanalytisch ausgerichtete Buch fragt nach der diskursiven Konstruktion von Sexarbeit und deren Regulierung in Deutschland. Im Fokus stehen Arten und Weisen der Herstellung von Wissen in diesem Debattenfeld, dem immer wieder eine Unmöglichkeit von Evidenz („Dunkelfeld“), eine sehr ausgeprägte Dichotomie von Positionen jenseits etablierter Koalitionen und eine hohe Präsenz von Moral zugeschrieben wird. Die Studie verbindet diskursanalytische und problemsoziologische Perspektiven und untersucht vor diesem Hintergrund empirisch Wissenspolitiken und Wissensformen in der Verhandlung der Regulierung von Prostitution in Deutschland seit Mitte der 1980er Jahre. Einen zeitlichen Schwerpunkt bilden dabei Diskussionen und Prozesse rund um die Einführung des Prostituiertenschutzgesetzes im Jahre 2016. In den Blick genommen wird, wie die Faktizität von Sachlagen zum Phänomen Sexarbeit hergestellt, mit ethisch-moralischen Wertungen versehen und auf unterschiedlichen Ebenen in institutionell-organisatorische Bearbeitungen überführt wird – Prozesse, die durchgehend von Deutungskonflikten, Problematisierungs- und Entproblematisierungsstrategien begleitet werden. Als zentrale wissenspolitische Strategien werden dabei quer zu bestehenden Diskurskoalitionen Binarisierungen, Selbst-, Fremd- und Kontextverortungen sowie vorgenommene Grenzziehungen, eingebrachte Wissensformen und Versuche der Erzeugung von Resonanz näher betrachtet. Dies eröffnet aufschlussreiche Einsichten sowohl in die Komplexität der Aushandlungen wie auch in diejenige der verhandelten Wirklichkeits-Sachverhalte und vermeidet eine sozialwissenschaftliche Dopplung der im Untersuchungsfeld selbst bestehenden Diskursverhältnisse. Utopian thinking and utopian designs ostensibly represent a belief in human progress. The starting point of utopias is almost always a bad present that is to be overcome. But in the 20th and 21st centuries, doubts are growing about a plannable future designed by enlightened reason, about the project of modernity. Utopias are answered by dystopias. This makes it clear: the basic motif of utopian thinking is the fear of an uncontrollable future, a fear that could perhaps be overcome by the principle of hope (Ernst Bloch), an amiable illusion. Offen bleibt jedoch nach wie vor die Frage, welche tiefgreifenden und teilweise latenten Folgen für den Menschen als soziales Wesen und das gesellschaftliche Zusammenleben mit dem Einsatz und der Entwick¬lung von KI verbunden sind. Wie wandelt sich das Verhältnis von Mensch und Technik durch KI und wie ist dieser Wandel zu bewerten? Welche Chancen, aber auch Risiken eröffnen sich durch den Einsatz und die Entwicklung von KI für Mensch und Gesellschaft? Welchen Grenzen unterliegt der Wandel und welche Gestaltungsmöglichkeiten bieten sich? Und nicht zuletzt: Was und wer bestimmt die Entwicklungspfade, die KI nimmt – mit welchen Folgen und für wen?

Kommunikatives Handeln kann Macht entfalten, kann anderen ein bestimmtes Handeln nahelegen, ohne dass direkter oder indirekter Zwang dahintersteht. Die Frage ist, weshalb kommunikatives Handeln auch ohne Gewalt und Herrschaft Macht haben kann. Eine Antwort auf diese Frage hat die Soziologie bislang noch nicht geben können. Hier wird eine Antwort entworfen, indem gezeigt wird, dass und wie alltägliche Kommunikationsmacht sich im kommunikativen Mit- und Gegeneinander erst aufbauen muss, um dann wirken zu können. Dabei kommen der Beziehung der Menschen zueinander, deren gegenseitige Anerkennung und die daraus folgenden Auswirkungen auf die Identität der Beteiligten eine besondere Bedeutung zu. Ein solches Verständnis der alltäglichen Macht von kommunikativem Handeln kann dabei auch helfen zu verstehen, wann und unter welchen Bedingungen Kommunikation in den privaten und öffentlichen (digitalen) Medien wirksam sein kann. Ein Verständnis kann jedoch auch dabei helfen, selbst über kommunikatives Handeln Wirkung zu erzielen bzw. sich gegen kommunikative Zumutungen zu wehren.

Jede große Transformation in der Geschichte der Menschheit wurde bisher von einer kulturellen Revolution ausgelöst und begleitet. Diese Publikation zeigt, warum dies auch für die Transformation zur Nachhaltigkeit gilt. Im Fokus stehen nicht nur Werte, Menschen- und Naturbilder, sondern auch die gesellschaftliche Verantwortung von Bildung, Wissenschaft, Kunst und Medien. Für die zweite Auflage wurden die Inhalte überarbeitet und aktualisiert, Thesen geschärft und neue Studien einbezogen.Gegenwärtig befinden wir uns zwischen zwei großen gesellschaftlichen Transformationen: Die erste ist die kapitalistisch-industrielle, die vor fünf Jahrhunderten begann, bis heute dominiert und sich am Kulturprogramm der Modernisierung orientiert. Sie hat die Gesellschaft in eine Polykrise geführt, es droht ein Zivilisationskollaps. Die zweite Transformation ist jene zur Nachhaltigkeit, die sich an „Visionen einer anderen Entwicklung“ jenseits von Wachstum und Massenkonsum orientiert. Diese beiden Transformationen verdrängen sich an einigen Stellen gegenseitig und vermischen sich an anderen. Einerseits ist es die schwächere Transformation, die oft assimiliert wird. So werden derzeit eine „ökologische Modernisierung“ und ein „nachhaltiges Wachstum“ theorisiert, obwohl solche Ansätze Widersprüche an sich sind. Andererseits ist die soziale und ökologische Umwelt ein politisches Subjekt, das immer stärker in Dynamiken und Debatten mitmischt. So oder so wird sich an den Reibungsflächen zwischen den beiden Transformationen entscheiden, wie sich die Transformation zur Nachhaltigkeit am Ende durchsetzt: by Disaster or by Design.

The book proposes a new epistemological and methodological approach to concept formation across human and natural sciences, beyond Eurocentrism and specism. It elaborates a method enabling global epistemics to cope with multiplex challenges coming from geohistorical as well as epistemological standpoints whose methodological potential remains unexplored. It assumes monstrosity as the generative grammar of a new holistic approach to human knowledge, and draws from postcolonial, decolonial or post-western perspectives to place new methodological cornerstones, as well as from arts, astrology and magic from the Islamic and European Renaissance, indigenous knowledge, genetics, theoretical physics or Afrofuturism. The book aims at provoking a shift in critical perspectives, which do not acknowledge their own inability to steam an appropriate methodology of terminological and conceptual elaboration for the lexicon of contemporary human knowledge, out of a pressing demand: once agreed upon the world as a single yet multilayered spacetime of analysis, how should research about large-scale/long-term processes of social change advance, in order to cope with the asymmetrical power relations that materialize colonial history through heterarchies of class, gender, race, ethnicity, culture, knowledge, cosmology and ecology?This book struggles against the prejudice that the instances heterogeneous yet non canonical epistemics are in fact exclusively confined to provincial, exotic or solipsistic particularisms; therefore never as universalistic as the dominant ones. To address this problem, the book proposes: a different way to think of the relation between the abstract and the concrete; a new relation between data or histories, and concepts; an alternative pathway to cross-cultural translation in conceptual and terminological analysis; a new posture to inhabit the spacetimes at the border between translation and untranslatability.

This book presents a theory-historically grounded blueprint for a responsive sociology of law. It is based on the conviction, gained in research in the sociology of law, that sociology has more to say about law than its disciplinary surface reveals and than its self-descriptions allow. Responsive sociology of law, it is argued, can be formulated as a discourse of practice in the sociology of law based on the scientific autonomy of sociology. Responsiveness then denotes a form of interdisciplinarity that does not amount to the mere absorption of sociological insights by jurisprudence, but envisages a symmetrical arrangement of mutual relations.

In this updated version of a contemporary classic of discourse research, Reiner Keller develops the theoretical and methodological foundations of the Sociology of Knowledge Approach to Discourse (SKAD). Translated from the original German into English for the first time, this book brings together two previously unconnected domains of knowledge analysis in social science: the rich traditions of sociology of knowledge and symbolic interactionism on one hand and the works of discourse studies, especially in relation to Michel Foucault, on the other. It presents a critical discussion of key developments in sociology of knowledge, symbolic interactionist, and related interpretive approaches, explains the communicational turn of recent work in the field, and examines how traditions within sociology of knowledge shifted focus or converged over time. Following this, the book discusses the development of discourse theory and discourse analysis since the 1960s, including critical discourse analysis, hegemony analysis, or cultural studies approaches. Embarking from a profound reconstruction of Michel Foucault's work, the book then sets its own distinctive course by integrating major elements of Foucault's perspective with the sociology of knowledge. Along this path, Reiner Keller establishes the heuristics and methodology for a sociology of knowledge approach to discourse, providing a comprehensive research programme for the study of social relations of knowledge and politics of knowledge.
