Background and Objectives: Lung cancer is the second most common form of cancer in the world for both men and women as well as the most common cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide. The aim of this study is to summarize the radiological characteristics between primary lung adenocarcinoma subtypes and to correlate them with FDG uptake on PET-CT. Materials and Methods: This retrospective study included 102 patients with pathohistologically confirmed lung adenocarcinoma. A PET-CT examination was performed on some of the patients and the values of SUVmax were also correlated with the histological and morphological characteristics of the masses in the lungs. Results: The results of this analysis showed that the mean size of AIS-MIA (adenocarcinoma in situ and minimally invasive adenocarcinoma) cancer was significantly lower than for all other cancer types, while the mean size of the acinar cancer was smaller than in the solid type of cancer. Metastases were significantly more frequent in solid adenocarcinoma than in acinar, lepidic, and AIS-MIA cancer subtypes. The maximum standardized FDG uptake was significantly lower in AIS-MIA than in all other cancer types and in the acinar predominant subtype compared to solid cancer. Papillary predominant adenocarcinoma had higher odds of developing contralateral lymph node involvement compared to other types. Solid adenocarcinoma was associated with higher odds of having metastases and with higher SUVmax. AIS-MIA was associated with lower odds of one unit increase in tumor size and ipsilateral lymph node involvement. Conclusions: The correlation between histopathological and radiological findings is crucial for accurate diagnosis and staging. Since its first appearance in 1981, HIV-1 has remained a global concern. Current methods for diagnosing HIV-1, while effective, are mostly specific to a given subtype of HIV-1 and often require expensive equipment and highly trained individuals to collect and process the sample. It is necessary to develop a sensitive diagnostic method that can be administered with minimal equipment to provide better care in low-resource settings. Loop-mediated isothermal amplification is a rapid and sensitive method for detecting the presence of specific nucleic acid sequences. Herein we report the development and comparison of two different HIV LAMP assays, integrase and VPR, as well as the comparison between TRIZol and magnetic beads RNA extraction methods for each assay. Our analysis shows that the integrase assay was able to detect the virus from multiple subtypes in under 30 min with a variable limit of detection (LOD) that was dependent on the HIV-1 subtype. The small robotic vehicle presented in this article is a special, multifunctional vehicle that can perform diagnostic tasks in several different areas. Examination of heat release and heat losses, which characterizes the efficiency of processes in many technical areas. A device that penetrates into small spaces may be needed. In this area, an important task is to navigate the device to the right place under trucks and cars to perform thermal camera diagnostics. The examination of excessive heat emission is extremely important to filter out faulty transmission systems, faulty engines, and to detect excessively hot brake drums, which are unfortunately also responsible for causing many serious accidents and fires. The remote-controlled navigation robot with a camera presented in the article is perfectly suited for the above task, as it can also transmit the image of the thermal camera to a remote display. In addition to automotive applications, the device can also be used for other industrial purposes and machine diagnostic tasks. I According to the current European Union building energy regulations, new buildings must have almost zero energy requirements. The so-called thermal bridges must be calculated for both old and new buildings under construction. A useful solution to this problem can be the quick and cost-effective energetic measurement and classification of thermal bridges, factors, and structural elements that cause heat loss. Background: Variation in laboratory healthcare data due to seasonal changes is a widely accepted phenomenon. Seasonal variation is generally not systematically accounted for in healthcare settings. This study applies a newly developed adjustment method for seasonal variation to analyze the effect seasonality has on machine learning model classification of diagnoses. Methods: Machine learning methods were trained and tested on ~ 22 million unique records from ~ 575,000 unique patients admitted to Danish hospitals. Four machine learning models (adaBoost, decision tree, neural net, and random forest) classifying 35 diseases of the circulatory system (ICD-10 diagnosis codes, chapter IX) were run before and after seasonal adjustment of 23 laboratory reference intervals (RIs). The effect of the adjustment was benchmarked via its contribution to machine learning models trained using hyperparameter optimization and assessed quantitatively using performance metrics (AUROC and AUPRC). Results: Seasonally adjusted RIs significantly improved cardiovascular disease classification in 24 of the 35 tested cases when using neural net models. Features with the highest average feature importance (via SHAP explainability) across all disease models were sex, C- reactive protein, and estimated glomerular filtration. Classification of diseases of the vessels, such as thrombotic diseases and other atherosclerotic diseases consistently improved after seasonal adjustment. Conclusions: As data volumes increase and data-driven methods are becoming more advanced, it is essential to improve data quality at the pre-processing level. This study presents a method that makes it feasible to introduce seasonally adjusted RIs into the clinical research space in any disease domain. Purpose. To develop a hybrid method based on ICEEMDAN and OMEDA for high-fidelity detection of the diagnostic features of the technical condition of roller bearing. Methodology. Due to digital signal processing the search was made of the informative components on the broadband spectra, envelope spectra, squared envelope spectra. The usage of the methods of mathematical statistics for the selection of informative IMFs as a result of iterative calculate procedures. The introduction of blind deconvolution method with a proper objective function for the enhancement of impulse fault features. Findings. The use of traditional spectral methods provided an incomplete list of diagnostic features of bearing roller damage. The empirical mode decomposition (EMD) method and its minor versions provide the series of intrinsic mode functions (IMFs). On the broadband vibration spectra of the selected low-frequency IMFs, diagnostic features were not detected in a sufficient number. Further research focused on the development of a hybrid method that takes into account the demodulation procedure of the high-frequency components of those IMFs that were selected according to the complex evaluation index. The Fast Kurtogram technique determined an informative frequency band of 7.2–7.5 kHz for demodulation and construction of the squared envelope spectra, where harmonics of the roller spin frequency and some side bands with a width equal to the separator rotation frequency appeared. The use of OMEDA caused the reduction of residual noise on the squared envelope spectra and bilateral sidebands to appear around all harmonics of the roller spin frequency. Originality. For the first time, the whole list of the diagnostic features of roller faults of the axle-box bearing was identified using the developed hybrid method, which involves steps of noise reduction for enhancing a physical meaning of a proper frequency components, associated with faults. The usage of the optimal minimum entropy deconvolution adjusted method helped to eliminate noise and provide all diagnostic features of the technical condition on the squared envelope spectrum. Practical value. The results of the study help to control the quality of repair of the axle-box rolling bearings on the test rig at the workshop of the freight railway car depot. In Brazil, the cultivation of macadamia (Macadamia integrifolia) has expanded within the nut industry. However, there is a lack of information concerning the primary macadamia diseases under Brazilian conditions, which is crucial to defining management strategies. This study aims to identify the causal agents responsible for macadamia diseases and determine their prevalence based on a 2-year survey in a representative production area in Brazil. Samples were collected from leaves, trunk sections, racemes, and macadamia fruit from November 2019 to September 2021 in Brazil. All associated microorganisms were isolated, and pathogenicity tests were conducted to fulfill Koch's postulates. For isolates confirmed as pathogenic, morphological characterisation and molecular identification were performed. The diseases observed, along with their respective prevalence, were as follows: leaf spot caused by Neopestalotiopsis (7%), stem canker caused by Lasiodiplodia (28%), Cladosporium blight caused by Cladosporium (72%), and fruit rot caused by Colletotrichum (18%). This study marks the first reporting of the fungi species L. pseudotheobromae, C. xanthochromaticum, and Co. siamense as phytopathogens of macadamia in Brazil. Additionally, it reports C. xanthochromaticum and Co. siamense for the first time as causal agents of Cladosporium blight and fruit rot in macadamia worldwide, respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Ankle Brachial Pressure Index (ABPI) measurement has long been considered the gold standard of vascular assessment for people with lower limb ulceration. Despite this, only around 15% of patients in the United Kingdom who require an ABPI measurement undergo the assessment. The Lanarkshire Oximetry Index (LOI) is a cheaper and arguably more accessible approach to vascular assessment and was initially proposed as an alternative to the ABPI in 2000. No synthesis of evidence related to the LOI has been performed since its introduction into the literature. Primary studies were sought to determine the clinimetric properties of the LOI and its level of agreement with ABPI assessments. Systematic searches of MEDLINE, CINAHL, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, BNI, ProQuest Health and Medicine, Science Direct, Google Scholar and the British Library (online search) were conducted. Reference lists of identified studies were also reviewed to identify additional studies. Three primary studies met the inclusion criteria, reporting data from 307 patients and 584 limbs assessed using both the LOI and ABPI. All three studies reported fair to moderate kappa values for interrater reliability (κ = 0.290–0.747) and statistically significant positive correlation coefficients (r = 0.37, p < 0.001 in two studies) between the LOI and ABPI. The combined data from the three studies indicated a sensitivity of 52% (41.78–62.1, 95% confidence interval [CI]) and specificity of 96.08% (93.4–97.9, 95% CI) for the LOI using the ABPI as a reference. Additional data are required to indicate the safety of the LOI in practice. Data are also required to determine if the LOI is more acceptable to clinicians compared to the ABPI and whether there are any barriers/enablers to its implementation in practice. Given the relatively low specificity of the LOI, it may be beneficial to combine measurement of the LOI with a subjective clinical risk assessment tool to improve the sensitivity of this alternative approach to vascular assessment. Background: Molecular cancer profiling may lead to appropriate trials for molecularly targeted therapies. Cell-free DNA (cfDNA) is a promising diagnostic and/or prognostic biomarker in gastric cancer (GC). We characterized somatic genomic alterations in cfDNA of patients with GC. Methods: Medical records and cfDNA data of 81 patients diagnosed as having GC were reviewed. Forty-nine and 32 patients were tested using the Oncomine Pan-Cancer Cell-Free Assay on the Ion Torrent platform and AlphaLiquid 100 kit on the Illumina platform, respectively. Results: Tier I or II alterations were detected in 64.2% (52/81) of patients. Biomarkers for potential targeted therapy were detected in 55.6% of patients (45/81), and clinical trials are underway. ERBB2 amplification is actionable and was detected in 4.9% of patients (4/81). Among biomarkers showing potential for possible targeted therapy, TP53 mutation (38.3%, 35 variants in 31 patients, 31/81) and FGFR2 amplification (6.2%, 5/81) were detected the most. Conclusions: Next-generation sequencing of cfDNA is a promising technique for the molecular profiling of GC. Evidence suggests that cfDNA analysis can provide accurate and reliable information on somatic genomic alterations in patients with GC, potentially replacing tissue biopsy as a diagnostic and prognostic tool. Through cfDNA analysis for molecular profiling, it may be possible to translate the molecular classification into therapeutic targets and predictive biomarkers, leading to personalized treatment options for patients with GC in the future. D-galactose, a simple natural compound, has been investigated as a powerful scaffold for drug delivery, diagnostics, and theranostics due to its distinctive properties and interactions with specific cell receptors. In the field of drug delivery, galactose functions as a ligand to selectively target cells expressing galactose receptors, such as hepatocytes, macrophages, and specific cancer cells. The direct attachment of galactose to the main drug or to drug-loaded nanoparticles or liposomes enhances cellular uptake, thereby improving drug delivery to the intended target cells. Galactose has also been found to be useful in diagnostics. Specifically, diagnostic tests based on galactose, such as the galactose elimination capacity test, are utilized to evaluate liver function and assess liver disease as well as hepatic functional reserve. Additionally, galactose-based theranostic agents can be designed by combining drug delivery and diagnostic capabilities. This review is an update of our previous review concerning the broad spectrum of possibilities for exploiting D-galactose as a vector for prodrug design and the synthetic strategies that allow its realization, jointly in diagnostics and theranostics, to highlight the versatility of this interesting vector. The scientific objective of the conducted experimental research was to find an answer as to whether the application of magnetic flux leakage would be an effective tool for assessing the technical condition of lift guide rails in which the loss of thickness of the guide part is damage resulting from the brake whose operation destructively affects the surface shown. In particular, the scientific objective was to investigate the potential of this method in the context of quantitative assessment of the degree of damage featuring small increments in depth at the level of tenths of a millimetre. The conducted research was also aimed at determining the correlation of the effect of damage type with the nature of the signal recorded. The article presents the results of our own research, obtained from experiments on the use of magnetic flux leakage (MFL) to diagnose damage occurring on lift guide rails. During operation, lift guide rails are exposed to contact with the friction elements of brakes, resulting in the violation of their surfaces. Damage to the working surfaces of guide rails increases the vibration of the device, noise and wear of other components of the lift, such as guide rails. Currently, diagnostics of lift guide rails are not carried out, and their replacement depends on their technical condition. However, from an economic point of view, there are situations wherein their condition allows their use without their replacement with new ones. This was the main factor that guided the authors; we used a diagnostic head of our own design for the tests. The obtained measurement results showed that magnetic flux leakage can be used with great success to diagnose damage to guide rails. The results obtained in the laboratory shall be further developed in the form of research on correlating the signals obtained from magnetic sensors and the size of the damage, which shall eventually allow for a final quantitative assessment of guide rails regarding their technical condition. The conducted research fits into the scope of sustainable development by reducing the need for the consumption of electric energy and the emission of harmful substances into the atmosphere in the overall production balance. This will be made possible by implementing the developed head in industrial practice in the context of assessing the need to replace guide rails with new ones. The economic and environmental efficiency that is the basis of sustainable development in the context of lifts can be achieved at the modernisation stage by repeated (further) use of as many components as possible. An increasing number of countries have started to decriminalize or legalize the consumption of cannabis for recreational and medical purposes. The active ingredients in cannabis, termed cannabinoids, affect multiple functions in the human body, including coordination, motor skills, memory, response time to external stimuli, and even judgment. Cannabinoids are a unique class of terpeno-phenolic compounds, with 120 molecules discovered so far. There are certain situations when people under the influence of cannabis may be a risk to themselves or the public safety. Over the past two decades, there has been a growing research interest in detecting cannabinoids from various biological matrices. There is a need to develop a rapid, accurate, and reliable method of detecting cannabinoids in oral fluid as it can reveal the recent intake in comparison with urine specimens, which only show a history of consumption. Significant improvements are continuously made in the analytical formats of various technologies, mainly concerning improving their sensitivity, miniaturization, and making them more user-friendly. Additionally, sample collection and pretreatment have been extensively studied, and specific devices for collecting oral fluid specimens have been perfected to allow rapid and effective sample collection. This review presents the recent findings regarding the use of oral fluid specimens as the preferred biological matrix for cannabinoid detection in a point-of-care biosensor diagnostic device. A critical review is presented, discussing the findings from a collection of review and research articles, as well as publicly available data from companies that manufacture oral fluid screening devices. Firstly, the various conventional methods used to detect cannabinoids in biological matrices are presented. Secondly, the detection of cannabinoids using point-of-care biosensors is discussed, emphasizing oral fluid specimens. The primary objective of this project is to develop a robust and efficient malaria detection system based on Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs). CNNs have demonstrated remarkable performance in image recognition tasks, making them ideal for analyzing medical images such as blood smears for the presence of malaria parasites. By harnessing the power of CNN architecture, our goal is to create a highly accurate and reliable system capable of detecting malaria parasites with precision and consistency. Furthermore, we aim to ensure the efficiency of the developed system, allowing for the rapid processing of large volumes of blood smear images. This efficiency is crucial for facilitating timely diagnosis and treatment, particularly in regions where malaria is prevalent. By optimizing the computational processes involved in malaria detection, we seek to streamline the diagnostic workflow and enhance the overall effectiveness of malaria control efforts. In addition to accuracy and efficiency, adaptability is another key objective of this project. We aim to design a malaria detection system that can effectively handle variations in image quality and parasite morphology. This adaptability ensures that the system remains robust and reliable across different datasets and real-world scenarios, enabling healthcare professionals to confidently rely on its diagnostic capabilities. The clinical blood metabogram (CBM) was developed to match a tailored analysis of the blood metabolome to the time, cost, and reproducibility constraints of clinical laboratory testing. By analyzing the main blood metabolite groups, CBM offers clinically relevant information about the intake of low-molecular substances into the organism, humoral regulation, liver function, amino acid level, and the lipid and carbohydrate metabolism. The purpose of this work was to investigate the relevance of using the CBM in patients with diabetes mellitus. For this, a CBM was obtained for 18 healthy individuals, 12 individuals with prediabetes, and 64 individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus, separated into groups according to fasting blood glucose and oral glucose tolerance tests. The results showed that the CBM reveals diabetes-associated metabolic alterations in the blood, including changes in the levels of carbohydrates, ketone bodies, eicosanoids, phospholipids, and amino acids, which are consistent with the scientific data available to date. The CBM enabled the separation of diabetic patients according to their metabolic metabotypes, providing both a general overview of their metabolic alterations and detailing their individual metabolic characteristics. It was concluded that the CBM is a precise and clinically applicable test for assessing an individual's metabolic status in diabetes mellitus for diagnostic and treatment purposes. In this study, three generations of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assays: (i) conventional PCR, (ii) qPCR and (iii) droplet digital PCR (ddPCR), were systematically tested for their abilities to detect non-pathogenic and pathogenic populations of Vibrio parahaemolyticus. The limit of detection (LOD) for the ddPCR was 1.1 pg/µL of purified DNA, followed by the qPCR (5.6 pg/µL) and the conventional PCR (8.8 pg/µL). Regarding the LOD for V. parahaemolyticus cells, the ddPCR assay was able to detect 29 cells, followed by the conventional PCR assay (58 cells) and the qPCR assay (115 cells). Regarding the sensitivities to detect this pathogen from PCR inhibition prone samples (naturally contaminated mussels), the ddPCR assay significantly outperformed the conventional PCR and qPCR. The ddPCR assay was able to consistently detect non-pathogenic and pathogenic populations of V. parahaemolyticus from naturally contaminated mussels, indicating its tolerance to various PCR inhibitors. This study also revealed the significant difference between conventional PCR and qPCR. The conventional PCR assay showed significantly greater sensitivity than that of the qPCR assay in detecting V. parahaemolyticus in crude samples, whereas the qPCR assay showed better sensitivity in detecting the presence of V. parahaemolyticus in purified DNA samples. Hypoxic–ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) is one of the most common causes of childhood disability. Hypothermic therapy is currently the only approved neuroprotective approach. However, early diagnosis of HIE can be challenging, especially in the first hours after birth when the decision to use hypothermic therapy is critical. Distinguishing HIE from other neonatal conditions, such as sepsis, becomes a significant problem in diagnosis. This study explored the utility of a metabolomic-based approach employing the NeoBase 2 MSMS kit to diagnose HIE using dry blood stains in a Rice–Vannucci model of HIE in rats. We evaluated the diagnostic fidelity of this approach in a range between 3 and 6 h after the onset of HIE, including in the context of systemic inflammation and concomitant hypothermic therapy. Discriminant analysis revealed several metabolite patterns associated with HIE. A logistic regression model using glycine levels achieved high diagnostic fidelity with areas under the receiver operating characteristic curve of 0.94 at 3 h and 0.96 at 6 h after the onset of HIE. In addition, orthogonal partial least squares discriminant analysis, which included five metabolites, achieved 100% sensitivity and 80% specificity within 3 h of HIE. These results highlight the significant potential of the NeoBase 2 MSMS kit for the early diagnosis of HIE and could improve patient management and outcomes in this serious illness. Forecast sensitivity to observation (FSO) methods have become increasingly popular over the past two decades, providing the ability to quantify the impacts of various observing systems on forecasts without having to conduct costly data denial experiments. While adjoint- and ensemble-based FSO are employed in many global operational systems, their use for regional convection-allowing data assimilation (DA) and forecast systems have not been fully examined. In this study, ensemble FSO (EFSO) is explored for high-frequency convective-scale DA for a severe weather case study over the Dallas–Fort Worth testbed. This testbed, originally established by the Collaborative Adaptive Sensing of the Atmosphere (CASA) project, aims to improve high-resolution DA systems by assimilating a variety of existing state and regional mesoscale observing systems to fill gaps of conventional observing networks. This study utilizes EFSO to estimate relative impacts of nonconventional surface observations against conventional observations, and further incorporates assimilated radar observations into EFSO. Results show that, when applying advected localization and a neighborhood upscale averaging technique, EFSO estimates remain correlated and skillful with the actual error reduction of all assimilated observations for the duration of 2-h forecasts. The ability for EFSO to verify against other metrics (surface T, u, υ, q) beside energy norms is also demonstrated, emphasizing that EFSO can be used to evaluate impacts of specific parts of the forecast system rather than integrated quantities. Partitioned EFSO revealed that while conventional and radar observations contributed to most of the total energy, nonconventional observations contributed a significant percentage (up to 25%) of the total impact to surface thermodynamic fields. Immunoassays for cell wall mannans that are excreted into serum and urine have been used as an aid in the diagnosis of many disseminated fungal infections, including coccidioidomycosis. Antigen-detection immunoassays are critically dependent on the detection of an analyte, such as mannan, by antibodies that are specific to the analyte. The goal of this study was to evaluate the extent of cross-reactivity of polyclonal antibodies raised against Coccidioides spp. Analysis of antigenic relatedness between mannans from C. posadasii and C. immitis spherules and mycelia showed complete relatedness when evaluated by the method of Archetti and Horsfall, which was originally used to study the antigenic relationships between Influenzae virus isolates. In a further effort to validate the suitability of the antigenic relatedness calculation methodology for polysaccharide antigens, we also applied the method of Archetti and Horsfall to published results that had previously identified the major capsular serotypes of Cryptococcus species. The results of this analysis showed that Archetti and Horsfall's antigenic relatedness calculation correctly identified the major cryptococcal serotypes. Together, these results suggest that the method is applicable to polysaccharide antigens, and that immunoassays that detect Coccidioides mannans are likely to have good reactivity across Coccidioides species (inclusivity) due to the species' high level of antigenic relatedness. Glaucoma is a leading cause of irreversible blindness, and early detection and treatment are crucial for preventing vision loss. This review aims to provide an overview of current diagnostic and treatment standards, recent medical and technological advances, and current challenges and future outlook for wearable glaucoma diagnostics and therapeutics. Conventional diagnostic techniques, including the rebound tonometer and Goldmann Applanation Tonometer, provide reliable intraocular pressure (IOP) measurement data at single-interval visits. The Sensimed Triggerfish and other emerging contact lenses provide continuous IOP tracking, which can improve diagnostic IOP monitoring for glaucoma. Conventional therapeutic techniques include eye drops and laser therapies, while emerging drug-eluting contact lenses can solve patient noncompliance with eye medications. Theranostic platforms combine diagnostic and therapeutic capabilities into a single device. Advantages of these platforms include real-time monitoring and personalized medication dosing. While there are many challenges to the development of wearable glaucoma diagnostics and therapeutics, wearable technologies hold great potential for enhancing glaucoma management by providing continuous monitoring, improving medication adherence, and reducing the disease burden on patients and healthcare systems. In applications of piezoelectric actuators and sensors, the dependability and particularly the reliability throughout their lifetime are vital to manufacturers and end-users and are enabled through condition-monitoring approaches. Existing approaches often utilize impedance measurements over a range of frequencies or velocity measurements and require additional equipment or sensors, such as a laser Doppler vibrometer. Furthermore, the non-negligible effects of varying operating conditions are often unconsidered. To minimize the need for additional sensors while maintaining the dependability of piezoelectric bending actuators irrespective of varying operating conditions, an online diagnostics approach is proposed. To this end, time- and frequency-domain features are extracted from monitored current signals to reflect hairline crack development in bending actuators. For validation of applicability, the presented analysis method was evaluated on piezoelectric bending actuators subjected to accelerated lifetime tests at varying voltage amplitudes and under external damping conditions. In the presence of a crack and due to a diminished stiffness, the resonance frequency decreases and the root-mean-square amplitude of the current signal simultaneously abruptly drops during the lifetime tests. Furthermore, the piezoelectric crack surfaces clapping is reflected in higher harmonics of the current signal. Simple Summary: Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), the virus that caused the COVID-19 pandemic, has infected many different animal species, including those housed in zoos around the world. This review analyzes reports of SARS-CoV-2 infections in zoo animals to understand which species are susceptible and what symptoms may be observed in these species. A variety of diagnostic and sampling methods are discussed, as well as available treatment options. Moreover, this review discusses the factors involved in transmission of the virus and assesses the risk of virus transmission from people to animals and from animals to people. Part of this risk may lie in the occurrence of mutations in different animal species, that could potentially spill back to humans. An emphasis is put on disease monitoring and biosecurity measures in order to minimize the risk of disease to both people and animals. Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infections in a zoological institution were initially reported in March 2020. Since then, at least 94 peer-reviewed cases have been reported in zoos worldwide. Among the affected animals, nonhuman primates, carnivores, and artiodactyls appear to be most susceptible to infection, with the Felidae family accounting for the largest number of reported cases. Clinical symptoms tend to be mild across taxa; although, certain species exhibit increased susceptibility to disease. A variety of diagnostic tools are available, allowing for initial diagnostics and for the monitoring of infectious risk. Whilst supportive therapy proves sufficient in most cases, monoclonal antibody therapy has emerged as a promising additional treatment option. Effective transmission of SARS-CoV-2 in some species raises concerns over potential spillover and the formation of reservoirs. The occurrence of SARS-CoV-2 in a variety of animal species may contribute to the emergence of variants of concern due to altered viral evolutionary constraints. Consequently, this review emphasizes the need for effective biosecurity measures and surveillance strategies to prevent and control SARS-CoV-2 infections in zoological institutions. Aim: To synthesize HER2 aptamer-conjugated iron oxide nanoparticles with a coating of poly(2-(dimethylamino) ethyl methacrylate)–poly(2-methacryloyloxyethylphosphorylcholine) block copolymer (IONPPPs). Methods: Characterization covered molecular structure, chemical composition, thermal stability, magnetic characteristics, aptamer interaction, crystalline nature and microscopic features. Subsequent investigations focused on IONPPPs for in vitro cancer cell identification. Results: Results demonstrated high biocompatibility of the diblock copolymer with no significant toxicity up to 150 μg/ml. The facile coating process yielded the IONPP complex, featuring a 13.27 nm metal core and a 3.10 nm polymer coating. Functionalized with a HER2-targeting DNA aptamer, IONPPP enhanced recognition in HER2-amplified SKBR3 cells via magnetization separation. Conclusion: These findings underscore IONPPP's potential in cancer research and clinical applications, showcasing diagnostic efficacy and HER2 protein targeting in a proof-of-concept approach. It is known that the southwest vortex (SWV) is an important weather system that may induce severe weather. The southward deviation of an SWV track forecasted by the Global Assimilation and Prediction System of the China Meteorological Administration (CMA-GFS) is systematically diagnosed in this study. The southward shift of the SWV is directly attributed to the deviation of the steering flow caused by the weak forecast of the upper-level trough. According to the diagnosis of potential tendency, the underestimation of the initial vorticity advection forecasted by CMA-GFS dominates the weak development of the upper-level trough. The underestimation of the vorticity advection is eventually sourced to the weak geostrophic wind caused by the weak initial meridional and zonal gradients of the midlevel height in front of the trough. The assimilation process on the initial field of the CMA-GFS acts a negative effect on forecasting this SWV track. It weakens the π field at midmodel level, resulting in the weak midlevel height gradient in front of the trough. A verified numerical experiment initialized by a more reasonable field is carried out and the southward shift of the SWV is obviously modified. This study suggests that a reasonable analysis field is crucial for the accurate forecast of the SWV track. Significance Statement: The important impact of initial field deviation in key regions on the forecast in the late period is highlighted. A systematic diagnosis process for identifying and addressing forecast issues on SWV track is proposed. The electrophysical parameters of the plasma and the kinetics of plasma-chemical processes in a CF4 + H2 + Ar mixture while varying the CF4/H2 ratio are studied. When using diagnostic methods and plasma modeling together, it is found that replacing tetrafluoromethane with hydrogen (a) leads to a decrease in the plasma density and an increase in electronegativity; and (b) it causes a disproportionately sharp drop in the concentration of fluorine atoms. The reason for the latter effect is the increase in the frequency of the death of atoms in reactions of the CHFx + F → CFx + HF type initiated by heterogeneous recombination via the CFx + H → CHFx mechanism. The simultaneous increase in the concentration of polymer-forming CHxFy (x + y < 3) radicals indicates an increase in the polymerization load of the plasma on the surfaces in contact with it. Cancers of unknown primary (CUP) exhibit significant cellular heterogeneity and malignancy, which poses significant challenges for diagnosis and treatment. Recent years have seen deeper insights into the imaging, pathology, and genetic characteristics of CUP, driven by interdisciplinary collaboration and the evolution of diagnostic and therapeutic strategies. However, due to their insidious onset, lack of evidence-based medicine, and limited clinical understanding, diagnosing and treating CUP remain a significant challenge. To inspire more creative and fantastic research, herein, we report and highlight recent advances in the diagnosis and therapeutic strategies of CUP. Specifically, we discuss advanced diagnostic technologies, including 12-deoxy-2-[fluorine-18]fluoro-D-glucose integrated with computed tomography (18F-FDG PET/CT) or 68Ga-FAPI (fibroblast activation protein inhibitor) PET/CT, liquid biopsy, molecular diagnostics, self-assembling nanotechnology, and artificial intelligence (AI). In particular, the discussion will extend to the effective treatment techniques currently available, such as targeted therapies, immunotherapies, and bio-nanotechnology-based therapeutics. Objectives: Endocrinal variations within an individual impact the electrolyte composition, pH, and flow‐rate (FR) of saliva. The aim of this study was to evaluate the gender‐specific differences and the effect of combined estrogen‐progestin oral contraceptives (COCs) on FR, pH, and electrolyte concentrations in the parotid saliva (PS) of a group of healthy adults. Material and Methods: Stimulated PS was collected from 20 healthy adults using a Lashley cup; 11 males, 8 females, and 1 female undertaking combined contraceptive therapy (levonorgestrel/ethinyloestradiol 0.1 mg + 0.02 mg). FR and pH were recorded for each saliva sample. Electrolytes concentrations (Na+, Ca2+, K+, Mg2+) were measured using inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometer (ICP‐OES). Statistical analysis was performed, and the significance level was set at p <.05. Results: PS FR varied from 0.13 to 0.42 mL/min in females not taking any medication and from 0.08 to 0.5 mL/min in males not taking any medication. PS pH of females and males not taking any medication ranged from 6.23 to 7.50 and from 6.15 to 7.55. PS pH and FR of the female taking COCs were 6.5 and 0.1 mL/min. PS pH, FR, and electrolytes concentrations (Ca2+, Na+, K+, Mg2+) were not statistically significantly different between females and males not taking any medication. PS concentrations of Ca2+ and Na+ were significantly higher in the females taking COCs than in the females not taking any medication. Whereas, concentrations of K+ and Mg2+ did not differ significantly between the females taking COCs and the females not taking any medication. Conclusions: There are no significant gender‐specific differences in PS flow rate, pH, and electrolyte concentrations of Na+, Ca2+, Mg2+, and K+. Combined hormonal oral contraceptive has a significant effect on PS flow rate, pH, Ca2+, and Na+ concentrations. Whereas the PS concentration of K+ and Mg2+ are not influenced by COCs. The utilization of hydrogen fuel in gas turbines brings significant changes to the thermophysical properties of flue gas, including higher specific heat capacities and an enhanced steam content. Therefore, hydrogen-fueled gas turbines are susceptible to health degradation in the form of steam-induced corrosion and erosion in the hot gas path. In this context, the fault diagnosis of hydrogen-fueled gas turbines becomes indispensable. To the authors' knowledge, there is a scarcity of fault diagnosis studies for retrofitted gas turbines considering hydrogen as a potential fuel. The present study, however, develops an artificial neural network (ANN)-based fault diagnosis model using the MATLAB environment. Prior to the fault detection, isolation, and identification modules, physics-based performance data of a 100 kW micro gas turbine (MGT) were synthesized using the GasTurb tool. An ANN-based classification algorithm showed a 96.2% classification accuracy for the fault detection and isolation. Moreover, the feedforward neural network-based regression algorithm showed quite good training, testing, and validation accuracies in terms of the root mean square error (RMSE). The study revealed that the presence of hydrogen-induced corrosion faults (both as a single corrosion fault or as simultaneous fouling and corrosion) led to false alarms, thereby prompting other incorrect faults during the fault detection and isolation modules. Additionally, the performance of the fault identification module for the hydrogen fuel scenario was found to be marginally lower than that of the natural gas case due to assumption of small magnitudes of faults arising from hydrogen-induced corrosion. ABSTRACT Current microbial diagnostics for pleural infections are insufficient. Studies using 16S targeted next-generation sequencing report that only 10%–16% of bacteria present are cultured and that 50%–78% of pleural fluids containing relevant microbial DNA remain culture negative. As a rapid diagnostic alternative suitable for clinical laboratories, we wanted to explore a PCR-based approach. Based on the identification of key pathogens, we developed a syndromic PCR panel for community-acquired pleural infections (CAPIs). This was a pragmatic PCR panel, meaning that it was not designed for detecting all possibly involved bacterial species but for confirming the diagnosis of CAPI, and for detecting bacteria that might influence choice of antimicrobial treatment. We evaluated the PCR panel on 109 confirmed CAPIs previously characterized using culture and 16S targeted next-generation sequencing. The PCR secured the diagnosis of CAPI in 107/109 (98.2%) and detected all present pathogens in 69/109 (63.3%). Culture secured the diagnosis in 54/109 (49.5%) and detected all pathogens in 31/109 (28.4%). Corresponding results for 16S targeted next-generation sequencing were 109/109 (100%) and 98/109 (89.9%). For bacterial species included in the PCR panel, PCR had a sensitivity of 99.5% (184/185), culture of 21.6% (40/185), and 16S targeted next-generation sequencing of 92.4% (171/185). None of the bacterial species present not covered by the PCR panel were judged to impact antimicrobial therapy. A syndromic PCR panel represents a rapid and sensitive alternative to current diagnostic approaches for the microbiological diagnosis of CAPI.IMPORTANCEPleural empyema is a severe infection with high mortality and increasing incidence. To confirm the diagnosis of pleural infection and define optimal antimicrobial therapy while limiting unnecessary use of broad-spectrum antibiotics, there is a need for rapid and sensitive diagnostic approaches. PCR is a rapid method well suited for clinical laboratories. In this paper we show that a novel syndromic PCR panel can secure the diagnosis of pleural infection and detect all bacteria relevant for choice of antimicrobial treatment with a high sensitivity.
