Background: Endotracheal tube fixation in ventilated patients must be appropriate to ensure security during mechanical ventilation and prevent skin lesions. The incidence of endotracheal tube‐caused pressure ulcers ranges from 7% to 45%. Various endotracheal tube fixations are used in intensive care units (ICUs) worldwide. By pressure exercised on the skin, these systems could lead to mucosal and skin peri-oral lesions. The main objective of this study is to evaluate the impact of the two fixation systems most commonly used in French ICUs (adhesive elastic band versus fixation cord with PolyVinyl Chloride (PVC) sheath) on the incidence of these peri-oral skin lesions. Methods: This studyis a multicenter, open-label, controlled, superiority, cluster cross-over randomized trial. 768 patients will be recruited in the 16 ICUs involved. The inclusion of patients will be carried out over two 12-month periods. Each site begins with one of the evaluated fixation systems: elastic adhesive tape or cord associated with a protective sheath. After a 4-month break, each site switches to the other fixation system. The primary outcome is the development of at least one peri-oral lesion during the first ten days of maintaining an orally inserted endotracheal tube. The presence of lesions is assessed by a blinded adjudication committee using photographs taken daily. Discussion: This study is the first multicenter, randomized trial designed to evaluate the impact of elastic adhesive tape versus fixation cord with PVC sheath on the incidence of peri-oral lesions. Heat augmentation techniques play a vital role in the heating and cooling processes in industries, including solar collectors and many applications that utilize heat exchangers. Several studies are based on inserting fillers inside the tubes to enhance heat transfer. This investigation considered the effects of twisted tapes with large holes on a tubular heat exchanger's (HX) heat transmission, pressure drop, and thermal boosting factor. In the experimental section, counter-swirl flow generators used twisted tapes with pairs of 1.0 cm-diameter holes and changes in porosity (Rp) at 1.30% and 2.70%. In the experiments, air was utilized as a working fluid in a tube with a circular cross-section. The turbulent f low was considered, with Reynolds numbers (Re) domain from 4800 to 9500, and a boundary condition with a uniform wall heat f lux was constructed. The findings expound that when the number of holes rose, the Nusselt number (Nu), the factor of friction (f), and the thermal enhancement factor (η) all increased as well. Additionally, as the friction factor increased, the Nusselt number of the tape-equipped tube was noticeably higher. Additionally, it was discovered that the friction factor was between 70% and 94% lower than the values of the tube without tape, while the (Nu) was between 87% and 97% higher than the conventional tube values. The automation of the manufacturing processes of thermoplastic composite laminates has become dependent on open mold processes such as automated tape placement (ATP), which couples tape layering with in situ consolidation. The manufacturing parameters of ATP open mold processes, which comprise processing time, consolidation pressure and temperature, affect the bond strength between the plies and the quality of the laminates produced. Therefore, the effect of the manufacturing parameters should be characterized. This work experimentally evaluates the feasibility of fabricating thermoplastic laminates using an open mold process that reasonably models that of ATP. Glass fiber-reinforced polypropylene laminates are fabricated from unidirectional tapes under different consolidation periods, pressures, and temperatures. The bond quality in the produced laminates is assessed by measuring their interlaminar shear strength, which is measured using a short beam standardized shear test in conjunction with digital image correlation. Results show that consolidation can occur at temperatures slightly below the composite tapes' complete melting temperature, and consolidation times between 7 and 13 min can result in acceptable bond strengths. The results confirmed the feasibility of the process and highlighted its limitations. Preparing a friction pair "polymer-metal" using improved polymeric composites is contemplated a complicated task due to the inert surface of the polymer. Gluing polymer composites with improved mechanical and tribological properties on metals and saving their unique properties at the same time is considered the best way to prepare slide bearing products based on polymer/metal. In this work, ultraviolet initiation is used after a process of mixed acid pre-treatment. The surface of highly oriented films based on ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE)/graphene nanoplatelets (GNP) is grafted with nanocellulose. The grafting treatment is analyzed using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and contact angle measurements. Mechanical T-peel tests showed that the peel strength for the treated UHMWPE films increased by three times, up to 1.9 kg/cm, in comparison to the untreated films. The tensile strength of the treated UHMWPE films decreased by about 6% to 788 MPa. Tribological tests showed that the values of both friction coefficient and wear intensity of the treated UHMWPE films were increased insignificantly, which were 0.172 and 15.43 µm/m·m2, respectively. The prepared adhesive tape based on UHMWPE films, which can withstand a weight of up to 6 kg per 1 cm2 of the bonded surface, has a low coefficient of friction, high wear resistance, and high strength, and is considered a promising material for preparing slide bearing products. In forensic science, latex gloves are used to prevent law enforcement personnel from contaminating crime scenes or evidence with DNA or marks from the hands. Law enforcement personnel, however, are not the only people who want to avoid leaving DNA or latent marks at a crime scene. Perpetrators of crimes may also wear latex gloves. Alas, several forensic scientists reported that in certain cases even while wearing latex gloves, fingerprints transferred to adhesive tapes while attempting to process the tape for latent marks. Pressure sensitive tapes tend to be ideal surfaces for recovering latent marks and are commonly encountered in criminal cases involving drug packaging, explosive devices, or violent crimes (e.g., binding a victim's hands and feet). When a latent mark is developed on the adhesive surface of the tape, it may not be obvious if the latent mark was made by a bare finger or a gloved finger. Knowing that a suspect wore gloves could sometimes discourage the investigation unit from performing fingermark development procedures, as the odds to recover evidence successfully are limited. This study examines the feasibility of the transfer of friction ridge details through latex gloves to different types of adhesive tapes and uncovers the required conditions and a possible mechanism for the occurrence of this phenomenon. The findings of this work show that it is possible to develop and identify fingermarks transferred originally by gloved fingers. This research paper explores the assessment of electrical property changes resulting from damage in a Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymers (CFRP) laminate and its thermoplastic induction-welded joints. Controlled variations in electrical conductivity and dielectric permittivity were achieved by incorporating square Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) adhesive tapes into both CFRP laminates and the bondline interfaces of induction-welded components. Two elementary and effective sensors, capable of measuring magnetic (Purely Magnetic sensor) and electric fields (Hybrid sensor), were employed to detect these property changes induced by a sinusoidal magnetic field generated by a nearby coil. Both sensors exhibited remarkable sensitivity in identifying variations induced by the smallest artificial defects, measuring 2×2 mm in size. Furthermore, the PM sensor displayed a discernible signal trend corresponding to changes in defect size ranging from 4 to 225 mm square, as well as variations in position within the thickness of the CFRP laminate, extending to a depth of 1.7 mm. These findings underscore the potential of electromagnetic-based structural health monitoring (ESHM) techniques for monitoring the condition of a thermoplastic composite structure and its induction-welded joints. In this study, water‐based pressure‐sensitive adhesives (PSAs) were synthesized through an emulsion polymerization process using n‐butyl acrylate, methacrylic acid, acrylic acid, and N‐vinylpyrrolidone monomers, in combination with anionic and non‐ionic surfactants. The PSA was coated onto the corona‐treated surface of a BOPP film using a Mayer bar to prepare packaging tape. The effect of surfactant concentration on the properties of the resulting copolymer and PSA was investigated. The chemical structure, component distribution, and thermal behavior of the copolymer were analyzed using FTIR, HPLC, and DSC. The physical properties of the synthesized copolymer, such as solid content, viscosity, particle size, and gel content, were also determined. The performance of the prepared packaging tapes was evaluated through loop tack, 180° peel, and holding shear time tests. The results indicated that surfactant concentration significantly affected the adhesive's performance. Notably, the use of a 2.5 wt% surfactant mixture yielded promising results, with high monomer conversions and excellent adhesion properties in the tape. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Undesirable injuries during the intraoperative period, such as pressure injuries caused by improper positioning, medical devices, or adhesive tapes, can lead to patient harm and decreased satisfaction. This study aims to identify the risk factors of pressure injuries during the intraoperative period and the characteristics of these injuries. Methods: A retrospective case‑control study was conducted at King Khaled University Hospital in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Data were collected from the hospital incident reporting system and electronic medical records for incidents reported from January 1, 2022 to December 31, 2022. Inclusion criteria consisted of all patients with a reported pressure injury, including pressure ulcers, medical adhesive‑related skin injuries, or medical device‑related pressure injuries, occurring at least once during surgery. Results: Among the 113 patients, 57 (50.44%) had intraoperative pressure injuries (cases), while 56 (49.56%) did not (controls). The most common locations for pressure injuries were the lips (33.33%). Most of these injuries were classified as Medical Adhesive‑Related Skin Injury (61.40%). Stage 1 injuries were observed in 47 cases (82.46%), while Stage 2 injuries were observed in 10 cases (17.54%). Duration of surgery and device tightness were identified as significant risk factors (P < 0.001). Conclusion: This case‑control study identified the duration of surgery and device tightness as significant risk factors for intraoperative pressure injuries. The findings emphasize the importance of implementing evidence‑based prevention strategies. Healthcare professionals should prioritize staff education and training, while future research should focus on conducting prospective, multicenter studies and developing risk assessment tools and innovative medical devices. Purpose: To evaluate the shear bond strength (SBS) of resin composite to dentin contaminated with artificial saliva (AS) containing mucin and amylase using an experimental method controlling the volume of saliva and adhesive in a defined surface area. Methods: Flat bonding surfaces were prepared on extracted human molars (320 grit surface). Using adhesive tape, a 4.5 mm bonding window was prepared on the dentin surfaces. Groups (n= 12) were prepared using the etch & rinse (ER) or self-etch (SE) modes for Adhese Universal (ADH), Scotchbond Universal Plus (SBU), and Prime & Bond active (PBA) dental adhesives (DA). For the control (C) groups, the adhesives were applied per the manufacturers' instructions with 2.0 μl or 3.0 μl of the adhesive. For the saliva-contaminated groups, 1.0 μl of artificial saliva with mucin was applied in the bonding window either dried or allowed to remain wet before the application of either 2.0 μl or 3.0 μl of the adhesive. After the adhesive film was air dried and light cured using an Ultradent bonding fixture, Spectrum TPH3 was bonded to the prepared surfaces. After water storage for 24 hours at 37oC, the specimens were debonded and shear bond strength (SBS) was calculated (MPa). A Kruskal-Wallis test with Bonferroni correction was used to determine group differences (P< 0.05). Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was performed to visualize the interfacial surfaces prepared using an ion-etching technique. Results: Mean SBS for the three adhesives were similar in both ER and SE modes to Uncontaminated dentin surfaces for all the control groups. For dentin contaminated with dried or wet saliva, both the surface condition and the adhesive system were significant factors at a confidence level of 95%. For the dried saliva test groups, ADH and PBA with 3.0 μl of adhesive generated similar SBS values to controls while SBU generated lower values. Lower values were generated when using 2.0 μl of adhesive for the three adhesives in SE and ER modes except for PBA in the ER mode. Using wet saliva and 3.0 μl of adhesive ADH and SBU generated lower SBS values while PBA generated similar values to controls. Under SEM, morphology at the adhesive dentin interfaces was similar among the adhesives to uncontaminated dentin but notable differences were observed for SBU and ADH for both wet and dried saliva-contaminated surfaces. Enhancing interfacial adhesion between functional coatings and target surfaces facilitates long‐term stable service by mitigating interferences of mechanical mismatches. Design of mechanical interlocks affords an effective strategy to strengthen the interfacial bonding with durability and compatibility, but the in‐depth investigations are still lacked. Herein, a gecko‐inspired hierarchical strategy realized by hybrid laser direct writing is proposed, which incorporates an armored frame scale for surface protection and a riveted anchor scale for interlocks. Such dual‐scale configurations endow the functional coatings with the stronger adhesion to the targets than the pristine and mono‐scale cases, resulting in 2 orders of magnitude enhancement resistant to tape peeling tests. Utilizing this scheme, a laser‐induced integrated deicing system is in situ manufactured on thermoplastics, primarily comprising superhydrophobic structures, carbon‐based sensors as well as adhesive copper (Cu) interconnects and heaters, where Cu‐based devices exhibit superior resistance to water impacts and stress fatigue. Interfacing with signal processing modules, such an all‐in‐one system demonstrates real‐time temperature monitoring and high efficiency in deicing (4.24 folds faster than the control group). This article discusses a case series involving eight patients who underwent patch testing for suspected cyanoacrylate contact allergy post-surgery. The patients were tested using a conventional patch testing method as well as a modified method called tape stripping. The results showed that tape stripping increased the sensitivity of patch testing to cyanoacrylates, particularly in cases where the conventional method yielded negative or doubtful reactions. The study also found that ethyl cyanoacrylate (ECA) was positive in five cases, suggesting potential cross-reactivity or co-sensitization. The authors conclude that tape stripping prior to patch testing can be a useful and pragmatic method for testing with medical adhesives when the suspected allergens are not commercially available. The tape-spring is widely used in aerospace, mechanical, and civil engineering due to its unique mechanical properties and compact size. This paper aims to establish a new analytical model to more accurately predict the folding behavior of the tape-spring, including the geometric configuration, folding moment versus longitudinal curvature curve, peak moment, and propagation moment. This model comprehensively considers the influence of stretching strain energy and bending strain energy on the total strain energy, and determines the folding behavior of the tape-spring through the minimum energy principle. The proposed analytical model was compared with Wuest's model, Yee's model, and Yao's model. Experiments of tape-springs made from two different materials were utilized for validation. The study shows that the proposed model has the highest prediction accuracy compared with the classical models, with the error of approximately 10%. The reason for the significant difference in the prediction results between the proposed model and Yao's model was given, and the relationship between stretching strain energy and bending strain energy during the folding process of the tape-spring was analyzed. The insulating structure near the slot outlet of high-voltage generator stator coils is the typical bushing structure, which is prone to corona and has a decisive impact on the safety of the generator. In engineering, nonlinear resistance anti-corona tapes are usually bound with around the main insulation surface of the stator coils near the slot, to achieve the effect of homogenizing the electric field. Usually, the resistance nonlinearity is increased by adding semi conductive or conductive materials into the anti-corona tape. However, after the process of adding semi conductive or conductive materials, the breakdown strength of anti-corona tape is often reduced, resulting in that anti-corona tapes with good nonlinear cannot be applied. In order to have both good nonlinear resistance and breakdown strength, epoxy resin (EP) is used as a matrix, which is blended with one-dimensional structured carboxyl-functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and zero-dimensional structured polyaniline (PANI) to obtain nonlinearly good materials in this paper. The nonlinear conductivity characteristics and breakdown characteristics were tested separately. The results show that compared to MWCNTs/EP composite materials, PANI-MWCNTs/EP composite materials have higher nonlinear coefficients and breakdown strength. The breakdown field strength of 0.5wt% MWCNTs/EP composites is 2.11 kV/mm, and the nonlinear coefficient is 1.41. In contrast, the breakdown field strength of 3wt% PANI-0.5wt% MWCNTs/EP was increased by 106.16%, and the nonlinear coefficient is as high as 5.32. In addition, with the increase in PANI doping amount, the nonlinear coefficient of PANI-MWCNTs/EP gradually increases, and the breakdown strength also gradually increases. It can be seen that doping PANI can improve the breakdown strength while maintaining the range of resistivity variation within the nonlinear material working field strength. Superconducting devices are an interesting technological option for improvement of efficiency of energy systems. High-temperature superconducting tapes are among the best choices for power applications. Because of their high non-linearity, the design of devices with superconducting tape requires specific simulation models and methods to correctly represent the superconducting behavior. The J-A formulation has been investigated as an efficient tool to represent the electromagnetic behavior of such devices. It is based on the current density (J) and magnetic vector potential (A), and able to represent both superconducting materials and ferromagnetic materials. With regards to the tapes, the use of thin-film approximation can be successful with the J-A formulation. Usually, only representations considering the superconducting layer of tapes have been investigated. This becomes a problem for operations where the current in the superconductor surpasses the critical current, for example in transient analysis. This paper presents an analysis of the effects the inclusion of all of the tapes' layers have on simulations with the J-A formulation with thin-film approximations. By considering all layers of the tape, one represents the transition between superconducting and high-loss states of the tape. A simple system, consisting of a single tape with applied current, has been studied as benchmark and simulated with J-A and the more established T-A formulation in two cases: considering all layers; and only the superconducting layers. Results show that results for the J-A and T-A formulations are compatible and the inclusion of all layers improves the stability of the simulation and provides correct assessment of the electric field in the tapes. • J-A formulation. • HTS tape second generation. Potential interventions to reduce fatigue and improve quality of life are appropriate.The study aimed to investigate the effect of auriculotherapy on persistent fatigue in recovered patients from acute phase COVID-19.This double-blind clinical trial was conducted in 2022 in Kashan, Iran on 52 recovered patients reporting persistent fatigue following acute phase COVID-19. A convenience sample was selected and randomly assigned to sham and intervention groups. The intervention group received four weeks of auriculotherapy with Vaccaria seeds attached to six fatigue-related auriculotherapy points on both ears. In the sham group, adhesive tapes were attached to the same points. Fatigue was assessed by the Chalder Fatigue Scale before (T0), after (T1), and four weeks after (T2) the intervention. Both per-protocol and intention-to-treat analyses were used.The two groups differed on financial status and hospitalization history (p < 0.05). The time-group interaction effect was significant for fatigue after adjusting for confounders (p < 0.0001). Fatigue scores of the intervention group were significantly lower than the sham group at T1 and T2 (p < 0.0001). In addition, fatigue scores in the intervention group decreased significantly over time, while in the sham group, fatigue first decreased briefly and then increased (p < 0.05).This initial trial suggested that auriculotherapy may reduce intensity of fatigue and therefore could potentially be integrated into rehabilitation programs for patients with prolonged COVID-19.Iranian Registry of Clinical Trials identifier: IRCT20100211003329N9. Background Hypothesis/Objectives Animals Materials and Methods Results Conclusions and Clinical Relevance Potential contagion and zoonotic risk make rapid diagnosis of dermatophytosis important amongst companion animals.To compare the adhesive tape impression (ATI), trichogram, Wood's lamp (WL) examination and fungal culture for diagnosis of dermatophytosis, and the ATI and trichogram for ease of use.Five dogs and 15 cats with consistent lesions, history and at least two positive dermatophyte test results.After WL examination, one representative lesion per patient was sampled for ATI, trichogram and fungal culture. Microscopic detection of fungal elements on ATI and trichogram were objectively and subjectively compared. The ability of all tests to correctly detect dermatophytosis, and the ability of ATI and trichogram to detect fungal elements in >20 high‐powered fields (HPF) were compared using Fisher's exact tests.ATI, trichogram, fungal culture and WL were positive in 100% (20 of 20), 90% (18 of 20), 95% (19 of 20) and 65% (13 of 20) of patients, respectively, with a significant difference between WL and ATI (p = 0.0499). Fungal culture revealed Microsporum. canis (n = 16), Nannizzia gypsea (n = 1), Trichophyton mentagrophytes (n = 1) and T. rubrum (n = 1). Fungal elements were detected in >20 HPF more frequently with ATI (18 of 20) than trichogram (11 of 20) (p = 0.017), and detection required careful scanning to distinguish from background debris more often with trichogram. Fungal elements were located with neutrophil clusters and keratinocyte rafts in addition to abnormal hair fragments more frequently on ATI.ATI had the highest ability to correctly diagnose dermatophytosis, and increased ease of detecting fungal elements compared to trichogram. Transparent materials widely used in applications such as eyewear, solar cells, and optical devices, often suffer from environmental challenges including fogging, surface contamination, and mechanical deformation. However, a universal strategy that resolves all these issues in a single platform remains to be resolved. Herein, a monolithic micropillar structure based on polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) elastomer is prepared followed by subsequent assembly of hydrogel micropatterns in between the micropillar array using inkjet printing to achieve flexible wet‐style superhydrophobic antifogging tapes that are applicable to various transparent materials and curvatures. The monolithic micropillar structure with low‐surface‐energy characteristics facilitates easy removal of surface contaminants by rinsing with water while granting mechanical durability. In addition, micropatterning of hydrogels via inkjet printing not only enables to maintain optical transparency in a fogging environment but also makes the fabrication procedure more scalable. Furthermore, the strong adhesion between the hydrogel and the elastomer is shown to provide enhanced stability under repeated stretching cycles and long‐term exposure to water while the presence of a loosely cross‐linked PDMS at the bottom of the tape made it applicable to a wide range of transparent substrates without using additional adhesives. The mass production of µLEDs requires an upscaling approach on 200 mm wafers, which implies the deployment of a technology that achieves zero defectivity without liftoff. In this report, Nanoimprint lithography (NIL) processing is successfully optimized for nanostructuring GaN‐based Silicon‐On‐Insulator (SOI) substrates. The etching of SiO2/GaN/AlN/Si/SiO2 layers using different plasmas is conducted and multi‐layer nanopillars 100–200 mm in diameter are fabricated. This approach generates zero‐defect arrays of pillars, which is particularly advantageous for the growth process. In addition, the SiO2 at the bottom of the pillar allows it to twist during the subsequent GaN regrowth, as this layer becomes soft at the growth temperature >1000 °C. This ability to deform enables a coalescence of pillars into layers with reduced dislocation density. As a result, high‐quality GaN microplatelets and µLEDs are grown via a bottom‐up approach based on pendeoepitaxy using metal–organic vapor phase epitaxy (MOVPE). The fabricated µLEDs have a very smooth surface with a roughness of 0.6 nm which facilitated the implementation of an easy and simple transfer protocol. Tape is a type of trace evidence commonly seen in forensic science. Little to no research has been published regarding the optimal storage material for pressure‐sensitive adhesive (PSA) tape. The purpose of this project was to determine the substrate with the least amount of interference for storing PSA tape. Interferences such as difficulty removing tape from the substrate or substrate components leaching into the adhesive can affect the analysis. This was a long‐term study in which samples were stored on various substrates for nearly 10 years. Ten different tape samples were placed on eight different substrates for a total of 80 samples. The substrates included typical materials currently used for tape storage as well as other, less common materials. The tape samples were evaluated for ease of removal at various time intervals. The adhesives from each tape were analyzed at similar time intervals by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). In addition, the adhesives were analyzed by pyrolysis gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (PyGC‐MS), scanning electron microscopy with energy‐dispersive spectroscopy (SEM‐EDS), and x‐ray fluorescence (XRF) at the last time interval (112 months) and compared to the adhesive tape samples from the original rolls of tape to determine if there was any adverse effect from the substrates during storage. The FedEx backing was the only substrate that had no adverse effects regarding ease of removal. The substrates that had the least effect on the adhesive for both short‐term and long‐term storage included FedEx backings, adhesive sheet backings, and polyester transparency sheets. Introduction: Nasoendotracheal (NET) tubes are exposed to various external forces, handling, slippage, and accidental extubation, with the potential for fatal complications. In the modern era, several techniques have been developed to reduce the complication rate of Nasoendotracheal Intubation (NTI). NET tubes can be secured using twill or cotton tape, adhesive tape, gauze, or a manufactured device, either individually or in combination. In present study, a transcolumellar stitch and transeptal stitch were designed with 2-0 silk suture material and utilised by many anaesthetists and surgeons to secure the NET, providing good stability but sometimes leading to columellar ischaemia and cutting through. Aim: To compare the intraoperative stability of Nasoendotracheal Tubes (NETT) secured by a transept flower stitch with those secured using a simple surgical knot in patients undergoing NET Intubation (NETI) for open reduction and internal fixation of maxillofacial trauma. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Sharad Pawar Dental College and Hospital and Acharya Vinoba Bhave Rural Hospital, Sawangi (Meghe), Wardha, Maharashtra, India, over a period of six months from March 2023 to August 2023. The study involved 30 patients with maxillofacial fractures who were divided into two groups. Preoperative assessments included case history, physical examinations, and maxillofacial evaluations. Patients were divided into two groups: Group A underwent simple surgical knot using 2-0 silk suture (odd-numbered patients), while patients in Group B underwent transseptal flower stitch using 2-0 silk suture (even-numbered patients). All parameters were recorded by the same surgeon at the beginning and end of the procedure. The data was collected, tabulated, and statistically analysed using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) statistical software version 23.0. Results: Out of the total 30 patients enrolled in the study, 24 (80%) were male and 6 (20%) were female. The comparison between the two groups regarding the duration of surgery showed no statistically significant difference. Three parameters, namely the amount of NETT displacement, nasal tip laceration, and tip ischaemia, were evaluated and recorded both preoperatively and immediately after extubation. The amount of NETT displacement (p-value=0.031) and nasal tip laceration, haemorrhage, or necrosis (p-value=0.049) were shown to differ statistically significantly between the groups. Conclusion: The present study highlighted that the flower stitch method is an extremely beneficial approach. This study proposes the novel manufacturing method of adhesively bonded joint with double-sided tapes by following the concept of bi-adhesive bondline. The stress concentration at the ends of the bondline for a single-lap joint can be suppressed by utilizing flexibility of the double-sided tapes. The double-sided tapes also make it easy to control the bondline thickness and to hold the adherends with their stickiness until complete cure. A tensile-shear test of the aluminum/acrylic joint verified that replacing both ends of the 30 mm bondline by the 3 mm double-sided tape improved the maximum load by more than 20%. The observation on the bonded area through the transparent acrylic plate revealed the suppression of the debonding initiation. On the other hand, the aluminum/aluminum joint did not show the significant increase in the maximum load, but suppressed the unstable interfacial debonding. The strain distribution obtained by digital image correlation method proved that the double-sided tape has the same effect of compressive strain generated in the flexible adhesive in bi-adhesive bondline. Fluoropolymer films were treated by atmospheric pressure nitrogen plasma in a roll-to-roll configuration. This treatment aimed to modify the surface properties of the fluoropolymer and assess its adhesion with commercial silicone, rubber, and acrylic adhesive tapes. Fluoropolymer films and adhesives were characterized using contact angle measurements, Attenuated Total Reflectance Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR), X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), and T-peel tests. The plasma treatment resulted in increased wettability of the films, defluorination of the fluoropolymer surface, the introduction of oxygen- and nitrogen-containing functional groups on the surface, and a reduction in surface roughness. Peel strength increased at different levels, depending on the treatment speed and adhesive employed. Silicone adhesives did not present a significant increase on plasma-treated fluoropolymer films; however, they presented the higher peel strength against the untreated substrate. Acrylic adhesives are sensitive to fluoropolymer surface chemistry and can be used to evaluate different plasma treatments, while the highest adhesion was obtained with rubber adhesives. The results presented herein provide information about the appropriate selection of the type of adhesive for a specific application, as well as the evaluation of surface modifications by T-peel test. AbstractThis article numerically investigates the impact of twisted tapes and extended surfaces (fins) on enhancing high-temperature steam flow in a circumferential rectangular channel, akin to the external jacket cavity of a tyre cure press. The passive enhancement techniques for improving the mold warm-up time of the tyre curing process have received limited attention in previous studies, which have primarily focused on enhancing heat transfer in configurations and working conditions typical of heat exchanger applications. The objective of this article is to enhance the condensation heat and mass transfer rate by geometrically modifying the internal flow path of the circumferential rectangular channel, resembling an external jacket cavity of a tyre cure press, using twisted tapes and extended surfaces. Four configurations are simulated: i) conventional circumferential rectangular channel, ii) channel with twisted tapes, iii) channel with surface extension, and iv) channel with both twisted tapes and surface extension. The heat transfer performance of all the modified channel configurations derived from the simulation results is assessed in comparison to the conventional channel. The channel, featuring a design that includes five twisted tapes with a twist ratio of 8 and 54 extended surfaces, records a substantial 36.85% rise in heat flux along with a notable 24% increment in the condensation mass flux. The simulation results are validated using an in-house experimental study. The tyre cure press in the experimental setup is modified to align with the design proposed by the simulation results, and a warm-up study is conducted. The warm-up time for the modified mold to attain the desired temperature is reduced by 33%, with no accompanying increase in steam consumption, compared to the warm-up time for the conventional mold. The severity of hallux valgus (HV) deformity is associated with recurrence after corrective surgery because of the degenerative change of the medial capsule including the medial collateral ligament (MCL) at the metatarsophalangeal joint. This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of the MCL augmentation using a suture tape anchor of the recurrence of HV and to evaluate the histological changes of the medial joint capsule in HV patients. Thirty-four feet with severe hallux valgus were included and divided into 2 groups. Seventeen feet had the MCL reconstruction using suture tape anchor with a combination of the corrective osteotomy as the suture tape group (mean age, 64.0 years), and other seventeen feet had the corrective osteotomy without MCL reconstruction as the control group (mean age, 62.0 years). HV angle (HVA) and intermetatarsal angle (IMA) on the weight-bearing radiograms and the Japanese Society for Surgery of the Foot (JSSF) score in both groups were compared at the final follow-up. The medial capsule was harvested from other 20 feet with HV and the relationship between the severity of HV and the histological findings was analyzed. HVA, IMA, and JSSF scores in both groups were significantly improved from preoperatively to the final follow-up (P < 0.01). At the final follow-up, HVA in the suture tape group (9.2°) was significantly smaller than that in the control (15.4°) (P < 0.01). There were no significant differences in the IMA and the JSSF score at the final follow-up between both groups. Histological scores in HV with ≥40° HVA was significantly worse than those in <40°. The medial joint capsule in severe HV deformity showed the degenerative change and the MCL reconstruction using suture tape combined with osteotomy provides a strong medial constraint to prevent the recurrence of the deformity in severe hallux valgus. 3 [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A superhydrophobic surface is an ideal choice to enhance the corrosion resistance of aluminum (Al) and Al-based alloys which are widely used in various industrial fields. However, there are limitations in the complex fabrication process, high cost, and easy damage of micro-nano structures for processing superhydrophobic Al surface. To address the aforementioned limitations, we presented an efficient and facile method via acid wet blasting method to fabricate micro-nano composite structures on the Al substrate and subsequently low surface energy modification to obtain superhydrophobic Al surface (SHP-AWBM-Al), which had a water contact angle of 162° and rolling angle of 3°. The fabricated SHP-AWBM-Al had excellent self-cleaning performance, anti-fouling ability, and good fog collection ability. Tape peeling test, sandpaper friction test, acidic solution corrosion test, alkaline solution corrosion test, and natural environment corrosion test showed that the SHP-AWBM-Al had good mechanical stability and chemical stability compared with the superhydrophobic Al surface (SHP-H-Al) obtained by chemical etching. In addition, the electrochemical corrosion test showed that the SHP-AWBM-Al was more corrosion-resistant than the SHP-H-Al. Background: The coronavirus disease pandemic has affected the way of life and health system. The use of face masks can reduce the spread of the virus, however, improper fitted masks reported results in inferior visual field artifacts. The effect of wearing a properly fitted face mask remains unclear. Objective: To compare the sensitivity in 21 points mostly in the inferior field of visual field in healthy eyes under two conditions of ear-loop surgical face mask use. Materials and Methods: Thirty-six participants, with 36 healthy eyes, underwent computerized visual field testing using the program SITA Standard 24-2. The participants were instructed to wear masks at the lowest position that covered the nose with sealed tape along the entire length of the superior border for the first two tests and unsealed tape for the third test. The sensitivity of the visual field was analyzed and compared between the two groups. Furthermore, factors that may affect the sensitivity of the visual field were investigated. Results: The present study showed statistically significant differences in the two test points of the sensitivity of the visual field, namely, the inferonasal and superonasal areas of the visual field between the two groups. Fogging and displacement of the mask were observed when the mask was worn without adhesive tape. Conclusion: Wearing a surgical face mask with the mask placed in a low position and covering the nose with adhesive tape, can reduce fogging and prevent the displacement of the mask. A wide variety of attachment techniques have been used to track birds with electronic tags, with glue, tape, leg rings, neck collars and harnesses being the most common methods. In general, the choice of attachment method should strive to minimize tagging effects, but ensure that sufficient data are collected to address the research question at hand. The aim of our study was to develop and evaluate tag attachment methods to track Sandwich Terns Thalasseus sandvicensis during the last part of the incubation and the chick‐rearing period of one breeding season. Tag attachments had to stay on for the duration of the chick‐rearing period (5–6 weeks) and be non‐restraining and flexible, but strong enough to withstand the forces and submersion associated with their plunge‐diving foraging technique. We first experimentally tested the durability of flexible material under various environmental conditions with the aim of developing a self‐releasing harness. Then, in field studies, we compared three different attachment methods on terns during the breeding seasons, attaching tags to dorsal feathers using (1) tape, (2) glue or (3) a newly developed harness made specifically for short‐term deployments of one chick‐rearing period and constructed from degradable material. Assessment of the performance of attachment methods was based on retention time of the loggers and on annual survival rates of tagged individuals in comparison with non‐tagged individuals. The use of tape and glue led to premature loss of tags (median minimum retention time (range) of 3 (1–4) days and 15 (5–26) days, respectively), whereas the self‐releasing harness had a median minimum retention time of 42 (18–91) days, which is sufficient to track Sandwich Terns during the entire chick‐rearing period. The apparent annual survival of birds tagged using glue or tape did not differ from that observed in non‐tagged control birds. In contrast, birds fitted with the self‐releasing harnesses might have experienced a lower survival rate than control birds. Entanglement of birds in the harness material was incidentally observed in three cases, which may have contributed to the lower survival rates observed in this group. The risk of entanglement can potentially be mitigated with a leg‐loop harness instead of a full‐body harness. Our results highlight the necessity of careful consideration when selecting appropriate attachment methods. Specifically, there is a need to address whether the research questions and desired tracking duration justify the use of a harness and the higher impact that it entails, or whether a tape or glue‐mount is sufficient. Rationale: Atmospheric pressure matrix‐assisted laser desorption/ionization (AP‐MALDI) mass spectrometry has enabled the untargeted analysis and imaging of neuropeptides and proteins in biological tissues under ambient conditions. Sensitivity in AP‐MALDI can be improved by using sample‐specific preparation methods. Methods: A comprehensive and detailed optimization strategy including instrument parameters, matrix spraying and sample tissue washing pretreatment was implemented to enhance the sensitivity and coverage of neuropeptides in mouse pituitary tissues by commercial AP‐MALDI mass spectrometry imaging (MSI). Results: The sensitivity of a commercial AP‐MALDI system for endogenous neuropeptides in mouse pituitary was enhanced by up to 15.2‐fold by shortening the transmission gap from the sample plate to the inlet, attaching copper adhesive tape to an indium tin oxide‐coated glass slide, optimizing the matrix spray solvent and using sample tissue washing pretreatment. Following careful optimization, the distributions of nine endogenous neuropeptides were successfully visualized in the pituitary. Furthermore, the quantitative capability of AP‐MALDI for neuropeptides was evaluated and the concentrations of neuropeptides oxytocin and vasopressin in the pituitary posterior lobe were increased approximately twofold under hypertonic saline stress. Conclusion: Mouse pituitary neuropeptides have emerged as important signaling molecules due to their role in stress response. This work indicates the potential of modified AP‐MALDI as a promising AP MSI method for in situ visualization and quantification of neuropeptides in complex biological tissues. The loss of midbrain dopaminergic (DA) neurons is the fundamental pathological feature of Parkinson's disease (PD). PD causes chronic pain in two-thirds of patients. Recent studies showed that the activation of the pedunculopontine tegmental nucleus (PPTg) can effectively relieve inflammatory pain and neuropathic pain. The PPTg is located in the pontomesencephalic tegmentum, a target of deep brain stimulation (DBS) treatment in PD, and is involved in motor control and sensory integration. To test whether the lesion of midbrain DA neurons induced pain hypersensitivity, and whether the chemogenetic activation of the PPTg could modulate the pain, the AAV-hM3Dq receptor was transfected and expressed into the PPTg neurons of 6-hydroxydopamine-lesioned mice. In this study, von Frey, open field, and adhesive tape removal tests were used to assess animals' pain sensitivity, locomotor activity, and sensorimotor function and somatosensory perception, respectively. Here, we found that the lesion of midbrain DA neurons induced a minor deficit in voluntary movement but did not affect sensorimotor function and somatosensory perception in the tape removal test. The results showed that lesion led to pain hypersensitivity, which could be alleviated both by levodopa and by the chemogenetic activation of the PPTg. This study introduced a novel two-step treatment to enhance the waterproofing, dimensional stability, and self-cleaning capabilities of ancient architectural wood. The process was initiated with the immersion of wood in an organic hybrid sol, composed of an acidic methyltrimethoxysilane (MTMS)-based silica sol and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), which effectively sealed the wood's inherent pores and cracks to mitigate degradation effects caused by aging, fungi, and insects. Subsequently, the treated wood surface was modified with an alkaline MTMS-based silica sol to form a functional superhydrophobic protective layer. The modification effectiveness was meticulously analyzed using advanced characterization techniques, including scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDX), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The results demonstrated substantial improvements: the modified wood's water contact angle (WCA) reached 156.0°, and the sliding angle (SA) was 6.0°. Additionally, the modified wood showed a notable reduction in water uptake and moisture absorption, enhancing its dimensional stability. The superhydrophobic surface endowed the wood with excellent self-cleaning properties and robust resistance to pollution. Enhanced mechanical durability of superhydrophobic surface was observed under rigorous testing conditions, including sandpaper abrasion and tape peeling. Furthermore, the modification improved the thermal stability, compressive strength, and storage modulus of the wood. Laser-assisted automated tape placement systems are currently the state of the art regarding thermoplastic tape placement. Flashlamp heating systems are rather new in this field of application and offer high energy density with low safety requirements and moderate costs compared to laser-assisted automated tape placement systems. In this study, the effect of processing parameters on interlaminar bonding of carbon fiber-reinforced polyamide 6 tapes is investigated using a flashlamp heating system. The temperature during placement is monitored using an infrared camera, and the bonding strength is characterized by a wedge peel test. The bonding quality of the tapes placed between 210 °C and 330 °C at a lay-up speed of 50 mm/s is investigated. Thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, and micrographs are used to investigate the material properties and effects of the processing conditions on the thermophysical properties and geometric properties of the tape. No significant changes in the thermophysical or geometric properties were found. Moisture within the tapes and staining of the quartz guides of the flashlamp system have significant influence on the bonding strength. Rooftop solar modules are usually held in place by racks or frames that are mechanically attached to a roof structure and/or by heavyweight, ballasted footing mounts. These mounts ensure that the panel system remains in position against wind load. However, mechanical connectors create penetrations into the water-resistant layer of the roof, whereas ballasted footing mounts cause a significant additional load on the load-bearing structure of roof. For these reasons, adhesive connection seems to be a beneficial solution. Acrylic adhesive tapes, marked as VHBTM, may provide sufficient strength, and they have no need for mechanical fasteners or ballast. Acrylic adhesive tapes also provide a comfortable, fast, and efficient bonding process with no curing compared to liquid adhesives. On the other hand, resistance to water at load-bearing joints has not been sufficiently studied yet and could be critical for connections exposed to the outdoor environment. The present study aims at the determination of water resistance and durability of the VHBTM tapes from the GPH series, which are typically used to bond a variety of substrates including many metals. The mechanical properties and failure modes are compared for the specimens before and after a 21-day immersion in water. A significant reduction in strength was observed, depending on the substrate material. The study of chemical changes in the acrylic tape and in its leachate through infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray fluorescence, and X-ray diffraction analyses clarified the reduction in mechanical properties. The selected VHBTM tape demonstrated strong resistance to the effects of water.
