In the Tsitsa River catchment of the Eastern Cape Province, South Africa, concerns regarding the sedimentation of a proposed large, multipurpose, in-channel water storage scheme prompted investigations of sub-catchment suspended sediment loads and yields. Confluence-based fingerprinting and source apportionment was undertaken to explore whether this simple approach could identify relative sub-catchment contributions to downstream sediment loads, supplementing modelling and direct sampling. In November 2018, fine sediment sequestered in bed substrates was sampled above and below confluences, using a resuspension technique. The < 63 µm sample fraction underwent analysis of mineral magnetic properties, gamma emitting radionuclide activities and geochemistry to identify suitable tracers. Conservatism and range tests were used to select different combinations of composite fingerprints at seven confluences. Bivariate source apportionment using an unmixing model showed that the approach could be used as a preliminary means of determining relative sub-catchment sediment contributions. Catchment characteristics such as geology and land cover, as well as land tenure and management, were considered as explanatory factors for the difference in sediment contributions. The results for most sub-catchments were broadly similar to those from other studies. Before the increase in anthropogenic activities, the global coastal ocean was a net autotrophic system. From human activity and the evolution of the earth, changes have been generated in its continents, oceans, atmosphere and life. Transport of sediments and bioelements to the coastal zone has been drastically altered, and there is debate about whether this zone is autotrophic or heterotrophic. This work carried out an exploratory study of five sandy beaches in the central coastal area of the state of Veracruz, three urban beaches on a gradient of anthropogenic activities in the Metropolitan Zone of Veracruz (ZMV) and two natural, non-urbanized beaches far from the ZMV to determine the concentrations and biochemical characteristics of the heterotrophic bacterial groups found in samples of surface marine sediments during two contrasting seasons in the region: dry season and rainy season. The presence of heterotrophic bacteria reflected the degree of anthropogenic disturbance that each beach presents, with a tendency to concentrate mainly on those close to urban centers. On the other hand, the anthropogenic disturbance gradient did not influence the diversity of biochemical characteristics of heterotrophic bacteria. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

[Objective The aims of this study are to analyze the response of farmland surface runoff and sediment loss to rainfall patterns under different planting modes, to explore the laws of farmland surface runoff and sediment transport in the Poyang Lake plain area under new circumstances, and to provide scientific basis for preventing and controlling farmland surface soil erosion, [Methods] 64 rainfall events were classified using K-means clustering method, and combined with monitoring data such as runoff and sediment production in runoff plots, the impact of surface runoff and sediment losses in different rainfall types of farmlands under three planting modes were analyzed. Results] (1) The duration, rainfall and maximum rainfall intensity of 30 minutes were taken as the rainfall characteristic indicators. The rainfall could be divided into 4 types (type A: 'medium duration, small rainfall and light rainfall intensity', type B: 'short duration, small rainfall and medium rainfall intensity', type C: 'long duration, heavy rainfall and medium rainfall intensity', and type D: short duration, medium rainfall and heavy rainfall intensity'). (2) The variation of runoff and rainfall of each planting mode was basically the same, and the runoff was also more when the rainfall was larger. In each month dry farming mode produced the most runoff, (3) No matter what type of rainfall, the runoff and sediment losses of dry farming mode were the highest. Under the types A and C. the runoff and sediment yields of water farming mode were the lowest. Under the type B. the runoff reduction effect of water and dry rotation mode was the best. (4) There were significant differences in the total runoff and sediment loss under different planting modes, and the performance followed the order: dry farming mode paddy upland rotation mode paddy farming mode. [Conclusion In conclusion. compared with the dry farming model, the water farming model has certain advantages in reducing runoff and sediment, especially when dealing with type A and type C. the effect of runoff and sediment reduction is more obvious. Water-reactive polymer grouts can be injected directly into contaminated sediment zones where a portion of the contaminated pore water may participate in grout polymerization and contaminants may be immobilized in the grout matrix. This study evaluated the effectiveness of injecting a water-reactive polymer grout into frozen soil for immobilizing iodide by incorporation into grouted soil monoliths. Iodide was used as a model sediment contaminant. Soil freezing is a unique method used in subsurface remediation and was investigated because it may limit the amount of contaminated water displaced and mobilized during pressure grouting. In addition, joint use of grouting and soil freezing has the potential to broadly impact other remediation challenges, for example, treatment of collapsible soil and soil in water-active areas. Variables analyzed were freezing, moisture content, iodide concentration, and accumulated pressure due to carbon dioxide gas generated during polymerization. Iodide mobilization, iodide leaching as cumulative fraction leached (CFL), effective diffusivity (D), and leachability index (LI) were evaluated. Iodide mobilized during polymer injection into frozen sands was 37.9%±12.9% which indicated that soil freezing did not prevent iodide from being mobilized when injecting the liquid polymer. Lowering the moisture content from 5% to 1.6% by weight, to align reacted water with the introduced polymer, resulted in a decrease in the mobilization of iodide to only 0.23%±0.06%. This is the lowest reported result for contaminant displacement from liquid reaction additions known to the authors. All grouted samples leached less and more slowly than the ungrouted (control) samples. Grouting reduced effective iodide diffusivity by more than 96% and the LI of the grouted soil monoliths was greater than 6.0, which meets the criteria for materials intended for shallow burial with radioisotopes. Sediment control in watersheds requires information about soil erosion and sediment yield hotspot areas. Sediment connectivity is an emerging concept contributing to this field and structural sediment connectivity is a concept derived from sediment connectivity. Determining structural sediment connectivity in a watershed can yield a comprehensive image of sediment management possibilities applicable at the watershed scale. However, in most studies, the validity of extracted sediment connectivity maps has not been evaluated holistically. The current study is, therefore, designed to determine a valid structural sediment connectivity map and to use it to validate findings of sediment fingerprinting of the Idelo watershed in Zanjan province, Iran. Digital elevation model (DEM), slope, vegetation cover, and flow accumulative layers have been used in compiling the structural sediment connectivity map. Field observations were made to calculate the field connectivity index. The results showed that the mean structural sediment connectivity index of the target watershed is −6.18. Moreover, areas in the downslope section near the outlet and the narrow strips around the watershed boundaries have moderate to high structural connectivity. The results of field validation showed there is an acceptable agreement between the field connectivity index and the structural connectivity map. Also, these results confirmed previous findings of sediment fingerprinting in the study area. Based on the findings of the current study, determining the structural sediment connectivity index is an efficient method to make management and conservation decisions and control erosion and sediment in the watershed. Annual sediment load transportation in the Indus River varies from 0.725 to 1.0 Mt/d and varies from 260 to 300 Mt/y. Sediment accumulation upstream of the inline structure (Guddu Barrage) has frequently increased. Consequently, the sediment accumulation reduces the intake canal supply, design withdrawals, and flood-carrying capacity of the Guddu Barrage. Furthermore, the Indus River changes its behavior, channel dimensions, pattern, and flooding frequency with respect to temporal and spatial morphology with braided high to low meanders. In the current study, the Hydrologic Engineering Center- River Analysis System (HEC-RAS) model, in combination with ArcGIS, were used to study sediment dynamics, analyze flood profile/water surface elevation, and assess erosion and deposition of sediment. In addition to this, a quasi-unsteady flow analysis method was used to simulate sediment transport from July to September 2010. It was found the invert change due to sediment transport maximum aggradation was 6.40 ft (1.950 m), and the maximum degradation was 30 ft (9.144 m), which further varies with the hydraulic conditions of the model. Cumulative mass bed change, sediment transport aggradation was 10.50 million tons (9.53 million t), and degradation was 3.7 million tons (3.3 million t). Moreover, it was found cumulative longitudinal mass change, sediment transport aggradation was 155 million tons (140.62 million t), and degradation was 10 million tons (9.07 million t). The cumulative mass inflow was 320 million tons (290.3 million t). Whereas the model revealed that the flood level upstream and downstream of the hydraulic structure was 264 ft (80.467 m) and 260.29 ft (79.34 m), respectively. Coastal restoration projects are significantly important in coastal ecosystems as wetland losses accelerate. This study investigates tidal hydrodynamics and the potential impacts of a waterway opening on an existing roadway to restore and revitalise salt marshes in a small estuarine system in Virginia, USA. A depth-integrated, discontinuous Galerkin shallow-water equations model (DG-SWEM) is applied for astronomic tide simulation. The model employs a high-resolution unstructured mesh with a minimum element size of less than one meter and resolves complex tidal flows in the entire barrier island system, including the existing culvert gate and canal system. Compared to the existing system, the water exchange increased dramatically (flushing time also dramatically decreased) under the opened scenarios regardless of the opening width (22.9-, 30.5-, and 38.1-m width). By increasing the opening width, peak velocity through the proposed opening decreased 30–40%, and the maximum shear stress was reduced by more than half. The high-resolution model represented complex tidal flows, including eddies, and assisted in striking a balance of water-exchange capability, opening stability, and minimising their potential erosions for the opening design. Besides, erosion and sediment transport potentials for suspended sediments were estimated using bed shear stress and a Lagrangian particle tracking module. Such proxy modelling approach allows for the impact assessment of civil engineering and ecological waterworks in complex and highly damped tidal flow areas and is readily transferrable to other like systems (e.g. causeway construction, causeway cutting, biota passageways, and inlet modification). Local scour around offshore wind turbine foundations presents a considerable challenge due to its potential influence on structural stability, driven by hydrodynamic forces. While research has made strides in comprehending scouring mechanisms, notable complexities persist, specifically with newer foundation types. Addressing these limitations is vital for advancing our understanding of scour mechanisms and for improving mitigation strategies in offshore wind energy development. This review synthesizes current findings on local scour across various offshore foundations, encompassing field observations, data-driven approaches, turbulence-sediment interactions, scour evolution processes, influencing factors, and numerical model advancements. The objective is to enrich our understanding of local scour mechanisms. In addition, future research directions are outlined, including the development of robust artificial intelligence models for accurate predictions, the exploration of vortex structure characteristics, and the refinement of numerical models to strengthen prediction capabilities while minimizing computational efforts. The aim of this study is to identify the main pollutants and evaluate the mechanisms of sediment transport from land to sea. This goal is justified by environmental pollution in the area associated with dredging and port activities. The objective is planned to be achieved by investigating the geochemical behavior of major and trace elements in fourteen surface sediment samples collected along the Moroccan Atlantic coast, from the mouth of the Lukkous River to the coast between the cities of Larache and Moulay Bousselam. k0-standardization method of neutron activation analysis using neutrons of the Moroccan Triga Mark II research reactor at the National Centre for Nuclear Energy, Science and Technology, has been used for analysis of collected sediment samples. The enrichment factor analysis revealed high levels of arsenic and chlorine, along with significant calcium enrichment, were found along the Atlantic coast. The enrichment factors (FE) for arsenic and chlorine are in the range of 20 < FE < 40, and for calcium, the FE is in the range of 5 < FE < 20. Conversely, some elements exhibited little to no enrichment, suggesting a crustal origin. PCA helped in synthesizing these findings, providing a clearer understanding of the spatial variations in sediment composition based on their multi-elemental signatures. The research examines surface sediments along the Moroccan Atlantic coast, revealing current contamination levels and geochemical behavior. These findings, applicable to similar coastal environments, are crucial for monitoring and managing sediment quality, especially in areas affected by erosion. Additionally, dredging and port activities in this region significantly disturb the sediments, resuspending contaminants and altering sediment composition, which further exacerbates pollution issues. This study offers a comprehensive geochemical characterization of coastal sediments in Morocco, enhancing understanding of sediment contamination and geochemical processes, with implications for environmental protection and sustainable marine resource management. Naumure Multipurpose Project (NMP) featuring a 169 m high Concrete Face Rock Filled Dam (CFRD) is the proposed reservoir project in the West Rapti River with an installed capacity of 218.34 MW. Most of the rivers in Nepal carry significant sediment loads that will consequently catalyze reservoir sedimentation. This phenomenon prevails as the primary factor in reducing reservoirs useful life, making ineffective for both flood control and hydroelectricity generation. Ultimately, such process of sedimentation has adverse impacts on projects economic feasibility and long-term sustainability. Therefore, the objective of this research was to examine the expected sediment deposition pattern in the NMP reservoir throughout its operational period by employing 1D HEC-RAS model to simulate the sedimentation process. The model was simulated for 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50 years. Yang's equation as a sediment transport function, Active layer as a bed sorting method and Toffaleti as a fall velocity method were best suited for the river reach. The delta deposition was formed between 11 km and 22 km upstream of the dam region in the Jhimruk river, with the sediment deposition depth reaching peaks of about 23 m, 38 m, 39 m, 41 m and 49 m in 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50 years, respectively. Similarly, the delta deposition was formed between 13 km and 33 km upstream of dam region in the Madi river, with the sediment deposition depth reaching peaks of about 47 m, 62 m, 60 m, 68 m and 75 m in 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50 years respectively. Headcutting of delta deposition occurred between 20 and 30 year due to high flood during low stage of reservoir. Furthermore, the study revealed that about 6.22%, 11.61%, 15.94%, 22.96% and 25.65% of the storage capacity of NMP reservoir will be depleted in 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50 years respectively. Rates of land surface processes provide insights into climatic and tectonic influences on topography. Bedrock incision rates are estimated by dating perched landforms such as strath terraces, assuming a constant bedrock incision rate from terrace abandonment to the next terrace level or present river level. These estimates express biases from the stochastic nature of sediment and water discharge in controlling river incision as well as from using a mobile channel elevation as a reference frame, leading to different incision rates when calculated over different timeframes. We introduce a 1‐D model incorporating fluvial mechanics, tectonics, sediment, and climate variability to predict these biases and assess their sensitivity to climate and tectonics. Findings suggest biases intensify under highly variable climates and slow rock uplift, with climate periodicity being a primary control for our modeled scenarios. Our model provides a mechanism to improve river incision measurement uncertainty, impacting paleoclimate and tectonic geomorphology reconstructions. Plain Language Summary: Geomorphologists often measure how fast rivers erode bedrock over time by dating river terraces that have been uplifted to be higher than the elevation of the modern river channel. This helps us learn how landscapes evolve and about what past climates were like over long timescales. But this method is complicated by the fact that rivers do not erode rocks at a steady rate and the elevation of the channel surface above which we measure terrace height changes over time. We present a numerical model that predicts how these terraces develop under different climates and rates of rock uplift. Model results imply that measurements of long‐term river incision are most susceptible to temporal bias in regions experiencing highly variable paleo‐climate and slow rock uplift. Integrating coastal topographic and bathymetric data for creating regional seamless topobathymetric digital elevation models of the land/water interface presents a complex challenge due to the spatial and temporal gaps in data acquisitions. The Coastal National Elevation Database (CoNED) Applications Project develops topographic (land elevation) and bathymetric (water depth) regional scale digital elevation models by integrating multiple sourced disparate topographic and bathymetric data models. These integrated regional models are broadly used in coastal and climate science applications, such as sediment transport, storm impact, and sea-level rise modeling. However, CoNED's current integration method does not address the occurrence of measurable vertical discrepancies between adjacent near-shore topographic and bathymetric data sources, which often create artificial barriers and sinks along their intersections. To tackle this issue, the CoNED project has developed an additional step in its integration process that collectively assesses the input data to define how to transition between these disparate datasets. This new step defines two zones: a micro blending zone for near-shore transitions and a macro blending zone for the transition between high-resolution (3 m or less) to moderate-resolution (between 3 m and 10 m) bathymetric datasets. These zones and input data sources are reduced to a multidimensional array of zeros and ones. This array is compiled into a 16-bit integer representing a vertical assessment for each pixel. This assessed value provides the means for dynamic pixel-level blending between disparate datasets by leveraging the 16-bit binary notation. Sample site RMSE assessments demonstrate improved accuracy, with values decreasing from 0.203–0.241 using the previous method to 0.126–0.147 using the new method. Iron‐rich, ferruginous waters were the dominant geochemical regime for most of Earth's history. Modern ferruginous waters are found in stratified, sulfur‐poor lakes, and serve as crucial analogs for biogeochemical cycling throughout Earth's past. Here we present the first depth‐resolved data of physical structure, nutrients and trace elements from Lake Poso (Indonesia), a deep oligotrophic ancient lake. Lake Poso is ferruginous, with anoxia below ~ 90 m depth, placing it among the world's largest ferruginous lakes. Physical stratification is weaker than other tropical anoxic lakes, indicating sensitivity for paleoclimate reconstructions. Trace elements and nutrients are predominantly shaped by the oxic–anoxic transition. Manganese– and Fe oxyhydroxide–driven biogeochemical cycling occurs at distinct depth horizons, with Co and Ni controlled by Mn and showing shallow release in anoxic waters, while V, Cr, P, and As are controlled by Fe, with release in surface sediments and diffusive transport. Chromium is nonquantitatively removed in anoxic waters, in contrast to widespread assumptions in Cr‐based paleoreconstructions. Oxycline U and Se removal corresponds to a local N minimum, suggesting biological reduction and/or uptake. These first ferruginous water Se data also show removal in sediments, indicating sediment signals reflect multiple removal processes and informing Se‐based paleoreconstructions, while the absence of sediment U removal contrasts other anoxic basins. A comparison with other ferruginous lakes demonstrates how local influences drive deviations from expectations in other systems, and highlight common, generalizable ferruginous basin features. Logjams create an upstream backwater of deepened, slower water, locally reducing bed shear stress. We compared hydraulic impact of logjam series across 37 geomorphically diverse reaches of mountain streams observed over 11 years in the US Southern Rockies. To enable reach‐scale comparison of logjam structure and spacing, we identified the modeled best‐fit effective resistance coefficient minimizing difference between outflow exiting a 1D channel with logjams present, and the same model channel with elevated channel resistance. Effective resistance increased with ratio of jam upstream depth to depth without a logjam, ratio of backwater length to average spacing, and decreased for randomly distributed jams due to close spacing, which reduced backwater impact. An analytic approximation and boundaries for region of relative spacing with steepest increase in effective resistance are provided. Our results can assist in targeting interventions to areas where hydraulic impact is greatest, providing value for money in nature‐based solution design. Plain Language Summary: In a river channel, logjams created by wood pieces create upstream backwater regions with slower, deepened water. By creating a backwater, logjams increase heterogeneity of habitat and sediment transport and increase connection between river channel and floodplain. We compared logjams in 37 reaches of mountain streams in the US Southern Rockies. The sites studied had high variation in logjam density, channel steepness, channel width, and floodplain width. To compare between reaches and identify the ability of logjam backwaters to slow water within a river channel, we found an effective channel resistance coefficient that produced similar model output as a reach containing a series of logjams. The effective resistance increased with ratio of jam upstream depth to flow depth without a logjam, and ratio of backwater length to average spacing. The highest rate of increase in effective resistance with more logjams in the river reach occurs for an intermediate range of inter‐jam spacing relative to backwater length. Engineered logjam and wood addition projects could target this range to provide the most benefit per intervention. Sediment residence time (SRT) is a key parameter of the Earth's surface system, bridging the realms of sediment transport, biogeochemical cycles, sedimentary archives, and watershed management. SRT in mountainous catchments includes the time particles have spent in the subsurface weathering zone, which has been challenging to measure thus limiting our understanding of the magnitude and controlling factors of SRT in steep terrains. In this study, we apply the 234U/238U activity ratio, (234U/238U), which reveals particle comminution age, to estimate SRTs in 32 catchments (drainage area of 6.79–143.67 km2) draining an active mountain range at the eastern margin of the Tibetan Plateau. The uranium comminution age allows us to account for the time that particles have spent in the weathering zone. The sampled catchments span a range of erosional, topographic, climatic and lithologic conditions, providing a unique opportunity to explore the controlling factors on SRTs. We measured the (234U/238U) of the 20–25 µm size fraction of the collected riverbed sediment samples and used the results to calculate particle comminution ages, which are used to approximate SRTs of fine sediment in the catchment. We then investigated the relationships between estimated SRTs and denudation rates, topography, climate, and lithology to assess controls on SRTs. The estimated SRTs range from 5.0 to 149.2 ka, and exhibit strong negative correlations with the 10Be-derived denudation rates and metrics for landscape steepness (relief, gradient, and channel steepness), with weak-to-moderate correlations with climatic and lithologic conditions. By combining the SRTs and denudation rates and assuming a steady-state weathering zone, we estimate a catchment-average comminution depth of 1.98 to 28.7 m, comparable to the depth of weathering zone estimated from modeling studies. Considering a topographic steady-state where denudation rates are in equilibrium with uplift rates, our results suggest that tectonic uplift exerts a primary control on the SRT in active mountain ranges, such that faster uplift rates shorten SRTs. Our findings suggest that tectonic uplift could regulate the temporal duration of chemical weathering by limiting the SRTs of fresh minerals in mountainous regions, sustaining a 'kinetically-limited' weathering scenario. Submarine fan reservoirs are important accumulation zones for oil, gas, and natural gas hydrates, offering significant potential for hydrocarbon exploration. During the deposition period of the Sanya Formation in the southern part of the Changchang Sag of the Qiongdongnan Basin, a large submarine fan developed. However, the internal structure, source-sink system, and formation mechanism of this fan remain poorly understood, posing significant challenges to exploration in this area. This paper examines the source-to-sink sedimentary processes and deposition of submarine fans, using the Changchang Sag, in the Qiongdongnan Basin in the Northern South China Sea, as an example, which will provide valuable general guidance for deep water oil and gas exploration. Based on the theories of seismic stratigraphy and seismic sedimentology, this paper utilizes techniques such as seismic facies analysis, seismic attribute optimization, paleogeomorphology reconstruction, and source-to-sink sedimentary systemanalysis to analyze the 3D seismic data of the study area. Research indicates that the Sanya Formation in the Changchang Sag of the Qiongdongnan Basin comprises three depositional units: submarine fan, feeder channel, and Semi-deep marine to deep marine mudstone. The submarine fan is a fan formed by the coupling and convergence of submarine fans sourced from the southwest and southeast. Internally, it is divided into three sub-facies: the proximal fan of the sand-rich submarine fan, the main body of the sand-rich submarine fan lobes, and the distal lobes of the sand-rich submarine fan. The submarine fan sourced from the southwest extends nearly north-south and is primarily fed by sediment transported through three large, banded ancient valleys. The sedimentary filling is characterized by three-phase progradation. The submarine fan sourced from the southeast extends nearly east-west and is primarily fed by sediment transported through a single large, banded ancient valley. The sedimentary filling is characterized by two-phase lateral accumulation. During the deposition period of the Sanya Formation, certain areas of the southern uplift belt were exposed for extended periods and subjected to weathering and erosion. Sediments are transported to large ancient valleys through small supply channels. A large number of sediments were transported to the southern slope of the Changchang sag through the provenance channel system such as large ancient valleys and slope belts and deposited in the center of the sag. These make up a complete system of large ancient uplifts and submarine fan source-to-sink sedimentary systems. The construction of large reservoirs has modified the process of water and sediment transport downstream, resulting in changes in the morphology of the river cross-section. Changes in water and sand transport and cross-sectional morphology are reflected in the rating curve at the cross-section. This study analyzed the variations in the rating curve at the Huayuankou (HYK) section and their influencing factors, and conducted water level predictions based on this relationship. The findings revealed that while the annual mean water level has shown a declining tendency over the past 20 years, the annual mean discharge has shown a constant pattern. The rating curve at this stretch narrowed from a rope-loop type curve in its natural condition to a more stable single curve as a result of the construction of the dam upstream of the HYK section. The effect of pre-flood section morphology and the water–sediment process on the scattering degree of the rating curve is inverse; increasing roughness and hydraulic radius decreases scattering degree, while increasing sand content and sand transport rate increases scattering degree. Using the measured data from 2020 as an example, the feasibility of predicting cross-sectional water levels using the rating curve was verified. The prediction results were accurate when the flow was between 1000 and 2800 m3/s; However, when the flow was between 2800 and 4000 m3/s, the forecast results were typically slightly lower than the measured values. Overall, the method demonstrates good predictive accuracy. Insight from the method can be used to predict water levels to better inform decision making about water resources management, and flood emergency response in the lower Yellow River. Tidal flats are valuable ecosystems that depend on complex biogeomorphic processes between organisms and sediment transport. Climate change has led to a rise in extreme weather events, such as storms. This, in turn, has increased sediment dynamics and created risks for the benthic communities inhabiting tidal flats. However, replicating sediment disturbances caused by extreme weather is difficult. To overcome this, we used the plow rake to enhance the natural tidal currents and wave conditions to simulate intensified sediment dynamics. The raking disturbance was repeated on two intertidal zones with different inundation frequencies and wind fetch levels to simulate the increasing frequency of storm impact on sediments due to climate change. We compared the measurements of sediment dynamics and macrofauna between plots that were raked and the control plots that were only influenced by natural hydrodynamics. Results showed that tidal flat sediments experienced erosion by 10–20 mm after six times biweekly raking treatments, depending on the site‐specific hydrodynamic conditions. Sediment dynamics served as a helpful tool for monitoring the species distribution regarding mobility traits: the high dynamic exposed sites were inhabited by mobile species, while the low dynamic sheltered sites were characterized by less‐mobile species. Moreover, the raking treatment decreased the abundance of species with immobile traits, yet the species composition did not experience significant change. Overall, the present findings indicate that tidal flats with low sediment dynamics and immobile macrofauna are at higher risk of declining abundance under intensified sediment disturbances than areas with high sediment dynamics and mobile macrofauna. Catastrophic sediment overloading of mountain streams in response to coseismic landsliding causes river systems to fundamentally reorganize their morphology and sediment transporting characteristics, influencing sediment yields, bedrock incision, and the coupling between erosion and tectonics. A sequence of 13 airborne LiDAR surveys of an alpine tributary of the Hāpuku River, New Zealand, reveals patterns of sediment mass balance change over 5 years following delivery of 6.6 million cubic meters of landslide debris during the 2016 magnitude 7.8 Kaikōura earthquake. The surveys reveal how mountain river systems modulate catastrophic sediment deliveries to their lower reaches through sediment storage, evolution of channel morphology, and armoring of the bed. Variations in valley width contribute to the delay and diffusion of the seismically induced disturbance "wave" as it moves across river process domains. The landslide sediment train remnants may persist for longer than the return time of their triggering mechanism, leading to a long-lived hiatus in bedrock incision in this tectonically active mountain catchment. Wave- and current-supported fluid mud on gently sloped continental shelves represents a type of sediment gravity flow capable of rapidly transporting substantial sediment over short periods, significantly contributing to coastal geomorphic evolution. To investigate the dynamics of intertidal fluid mud events, in-situ observations were conducted from May 9 to May 18, 2017, using a seabed tripod system at the lower intertidal flat of the central Jiangsu coast, China. Fluid mud was observed following a medium wind-wave event, with a maximum significant wave height of 0.42 m. The liquefied seabed, loosened by liquefaction, facilitated bed erosion and sediment resuspension. Fluid mud layers, with mean suspended sediment concentrations (SSCs) exceeding 10 g/L, periodically formed during high slack tide, early flood, and late ebb phases. These layers varied in thickness from 4 cm to 20 cm and exhibited strong stratification caused by suspended sediment. Fluid mud disappeared when the bottom turbulence kinetic energy exceeded a threshold of 0.00045 m2/s2 due to an increase in current velocity. The downslope movement of intertidal fluid mud was estimated using a theoretical buoyancy-friction model and validated by observed offshore-directed velocity jets at 0.1 m above the seabed during high slack tide phases. Additionally, onshore winds favored fluid mud formation during early flood phases, while offshore winds favored it during late ebb phases. These observations suggest that fluid mud can form on intertidal flats under conditions where tidal flows and winds align, contributing to a deeper understanding of the formation mechanisms of shallow gravity flows and the improvement of sediment transport models. At geologic timescales, a significant proportion of the sediment eroded from continents is transferred from rivers to littoral cells, then through submarine canyons to deep ocean basins. Accumulation and occasional discharge of sediment from canyon headwall regions is a likely driver for the sediment gravity flows believed to be responsible for much of this mass transport, but the responsible mechanisms and event timescales in canyon heads are imprecisely defined, largely due to the drowning of canyon heads since the last glaciation and the resulting dearth of modern depositional environments to observe. We investigated a littoral cell adjacent to Mattole submarine canyon in Northern California to better understand the influence of bathymetry and coast shape on sediment trajectories and hypothesize that canyon heads promote littoral sediment accumulation due to bathymetric sheltering of the adjacent coast from waves and convergence of littoral cells exposed to varying wave direction. The uppermost gullies of Mattole Canyon extend to the littoral cell, and a train of sediment waves within the uppermost thalweg of Mattole Canyon suggests that gravity-driven flows of shore-derived sediment may have recently occurred. Mattole Canyon and nearby Mendocino Canyon flow into the deep Mendocino Channel, which has the highest observed Late Holocene sediment accumulation rates in Northern California. We documented the beach slope, grain size, and sediment provenance along 15 km of coast adjacent to Mattole Canyon and conducted numerical wave modeling to infer the dominant direction and magnitude of sediment transport, relative wave sheltering by bathymetry, and estimated sediment mobility in the vicinity of the canyon head over a multi-year period. South of the canyon headwall, in the vicinity of the Mattole River outlet, coarser sediment rich in metasandstone clasts and steeper beach slopes coincide with decadal-scale beach accretion. North of the canyon head, sediments are generally finer, beaches are flatter, clast lithologies include more quartz and mudstone grains, and there is decadal-scale net erosion. Wave modeling suggests the Mattole headwall region is subject to sustained sheltering from waves due to canyon bathymetry, littoral sediment convergence above the canyon head for much of a typical year, and occasional bed entrainment of sediment in the canyon's uppermost gullies by large waves. Larger winter waves from the northwest likely result in net southerly drift north of the canyon head, with a high likelihood of preferentially transporting fine-grained, more quartz-rich sediment towards the Mattole headwall. Smaller summer swells from the west and south likely results in net northerly transport of metasandstone clast-rich Mattole River-derived sediment towards the canyon head. The imbalance in seasonality in wave conditions, coast shape, and sediment delivery by the Mattole River and other coastal creeks is broadly consistent with the spatial patterns in grain size, mineralogy, slope, and beach width that we observe in the vicinity of the canyon, and the net delivery of sediment to the Mattole Canyon head. An approximate mass balance of sediment flux from coastal streams feeding Mattole River littoral cell suggests that sediment volumes likely accumulate in the canyon headwall region that could supply several density flow events in a typical decade. These findings highlight the importance of the connectivity of the canyon to the nearshore region for the processes and products in canyons and fans. Understanding soil erosion and sediment transport from the hillslope scale to the regional scale is crucial for studies on water quality, soil‐water conservation, the lateral carbon cycle, environmental zoning and vulnerability. However, most existing erosion and sediment transport models are only applicable at the hillslope scale or for small watersheds with fine spatial resolutions (typically much less than 1 km). This study presents a process‐based soil erosion and sediment transport model for model applications designed for applications with coarse spatial (e.g., ≥10 km) and temporal (e.g., from hourly to daily) resolutions. This new model, referred to as VIC‐SED, effectively accounts for interactions between erosion and hydrological processes. This is achieved by tightly coupling the erosion processes with a hydrologically based Three‐layer Variable Infiltration Capacity (VIC‐3L) land surface model (LSM) and to a multi‐scale routing (MSR) model. VIC‐SED considers the impacts of (a) the spatio‐temporal variability of rainfall intensity on erosion processes and (b) soil moisture on the soil detachment process. VIC‐SED is evaluated in two watersheds. Results demonstrate that VIC‐SED is capable of reproducing water and suspended sediment discharges at coarse spatial resolutions and varying temporal scales varying from 15‐min to daily intervals. Our study indicates that the VIC‐SED model is a promising tool for studying and assessing the impacts of climate and land cover changes on suspended sediment yields over large regions using coarse spatial and temporal resolutions. Pleistocene outburst floods from the drainage of glacial Lake Missoula carved bedrock canyons into the Columbia Plateau in eastern Washington, USA, forming the Channeled Scabland. However, rates of bedrock incision by outburst floods are largely unconstrained, which hinders the ability to link flood hydrology with landscape evolution in the Channeled Scabland and other flood-carved landscapes. We used long profiles of hanging tributaries to reconstruct the pre-flood topography of the two largest Channeled Scabland canyons, upper Grand Coulee and Moses Coulee, and a smaller flood-eroded channel, Wilson Creek. The topographic reconstruction indicates floods eroded 67.8 km³, 14.5 km³, and 1.6 km³ of rock from upper Grand Coulee, Moses Coulee, and Wilson Creek, respectively, which corresponds to an average incision depth of 169 m, 56 m, and 10 m in each flood route. We simulated flood discharge over the reconstructed, pre-flood topography and found that high-water evidence was emplaced in each of these channels by flow discharges of 3.1 × 106 m³ s−1, 0.65–0.9 × 106 m³ s−1, and 0.65–0.9 × 106 m³ s−1, respectively. These discharges are a fraction of those predicted under the assumption that post-flood topography was filled to high-water marks for Grand and Moses Coulees. However, both methods yield similar results for Wilson Creek, where there was less erosion. Sediment transport rates based on these discharges imply that the largest canyons could have formed in only about six or fewer floods, based on the time required to transport the eroded rock from each canyon, with associated rates of knickpoint propagation on the order of several km per day. Overall, our results indicate that a small number of outburst floods, with discharges much lower than commonly assumed, can cause extensive erosion and canyon formation in fractured bedrock. The World's one of largest inhabited river-made island Majuli, developed in response to depositional processes of large sediment load carried by the Bramhaputra River and Subhansari River from the Himalayan hinterland. But, for decades it has been going through a significant rate of erosion, which is severely threatening the existence of the island and its rich cultural heritage. These erosional processes result in exposure to island depositional records and provide an opportunity to study these sedimentary deposits. This paleo depositional record is very well analysed by adopting the methodology of facies identification and their relationship diagram. A total of 18 exposed outcrop sections are studied with detailed sedimentological documentation, facies identification and symbols assigned to facies. Then calculations and tabulations are carried out for Facies Relationship Diagram (FRD) along with the construction of the sequence model, which provides a lateral and vertical lithofacies association developed in the entire island sequentially. On the basis of validation of obtained data through field survey and analysis of more vertical profiles, we study the correlation between existing bank erosion and dominated sedimentary facies at Majuli Island. This analysis results in two facies sequences: one mud-dominated and the other sand-dominated facies. The Massive Mud and Massive Sand beds are represented as the main facies between these two sequences. Therefore, mud-dominated sequence represents the Flood Plain deposit, whereas the sand-dominated sequence represents Bar and Channel deposits. This study also reveals that sedimentary sequences developed by the Bramhaputra River are mud dominated, while that of the Subhansiri River is both mud and sand sequences. This reflects the differential source to sink transport of sediments, as the Bramhaputra River carries sediment load for a longer distance than the Subhanshiri River. This study also reveals that areas of sand-dominated facies show higher erosion than mud-dominated facies. Therefore, the sedimentary record of the Subhansiri River is more vulnerable to erosion. Rapid urbanization has an accelerated impact on catchment hydrology and geomorphology due to land use and land cover changes as a result of anthropogenic development activities in river catchment areas that cause increased surface runoff and higher sediment yield. The present study investigates the channel changes and sediment transport phenomena, including bed material movement from the upstream to the estuaries of the Pahang River Basin, Peninsula Malaysia. The river geometry survey associated with the spatial variation in sediment transport has confirmed that changes in river bed profile occur due to the erosion and sediment deposition along the Pahang River. The sediment size distribution for the Pahang River was very coarse sand and gravel after the December 2014 flood. The river geometry survey showed a gentle slope that can induce lower discharge typical of alluvial rivers relating to flood events. Offshore structures are deployed extensively to harvest marine resources. Due to the harsh marine environments and heavy-duty working conditions, the risks associated with failure due to scour are high, and the need for accurate prediction of these risks is increasing. Often, pipelines and cables are critical elements of subsea energy transportation and telecommunication, and they are highly susceptible to scour-induced failure. The scour around spheres is relevant to the offshore industry as a simplified three-dimensional representation of subsea structures. This paper presents a numerical study, using FLOW-3D HYDRO, of the scour around on-bottom cylinders and spheres. Whereas most published research investigated scour around stationary solid objects, this paper presents numerical results of a more challenging case of scour around sagging cylinders and spheres. The model was validated against published experimental and numerical results. The scour depth was found to increase with the decrease of the sagging velocity of the solid object. For sagging horizontal cylinders, the scour depth reaches a plateau of 1.1 times the cylinder diameter when the dimensionless sagging velocity is smaller than 0.094. For sagging spheres, the maximum scour depth reaches 0.37 times the sphere diameter when the dimensionless sagging velocity is reduced to 0.0103. The findings provide guidelines for future research on more complicated interactions between flow, solid objects, and the seabed, accounting for the deformation of infrastructure over time. Practical Applications: This paper concerns the flow, sediment transport, and scour around horizontal cylinders and spheres undergoing slow downward motion, which resembles the sagging of on-bottom infrastructure under the influence of gravity and bed erosion. Offshore structures are deployed extensively to harvest marine resources. Pipelines and cables are critical subsea infrastructures that are susceptible to scour-induced failure. Spherical objects are commonplace in the offshore industry, so a sphere can be deemed as an idealized three-dimensional body. This paper provides detailed FLOW-3D simulations and developed empirical relationships between the dimensionless scour depth and dimensionless sagging speed. Most previous research considered only the scour around fixed objects, so this paper provides a novel addition to the existing knowledge on the scour phenomenon. Rainfall erosion can cause environmental and economic damage by decreasing the storage capacity of water reservoirs because of the detachment of soil particles. The purpose of this study was to develop a one-dimensional physicomathematical model that can help predict the effects of rainfall erosion on the banks of water reservoirs. The model was developed using the Mein–Larson model to describe water infiltration, the kinematic wave approximation to represent overland flow generation, and the steady state sediment continuity equation to estimate sediment transport. The model was validated using rainfall simulator tests and lateritic soil samples with a bimodal soil–water retention curve. The results showed conformity with the experimental data, identifying a threshold in the models for discharge per unit area and sediment yield rate, as well as a linear increase in the models for total runoff and sediment load per unit area. However, the model failed to capture the peak in sediment yield rate owing to raindrop impact during the initial minutes of rainfall. Parametric analysis highlighted the impact of increasing the calibration constant of splash erosion, erodibility coefficient, and critical shear stress on the slope of the sediment load per unit area model. Despite its limitations, the model demonstrates satisfactory predictive capability for sediment load per unit area under high-intensity rainfalls, achieving an R2 greater than 0.92 in five of the six cases examined. The sedimentary record of the Paleocene–Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM, ca. 56 Ma) allows the study of feedback mechanisms over the entire duration of a climatic event, from carbon release to the subsequent recovery phase. Clay sedimentation increase in the oceans during the PETM is linked to enhanced terrestrial erosion. Fluvial channel mobility has been invoked to explain this increase in fine sediment export based on more frequent transitional avulsions. In this study, we test whether the reworking of Microcodium (prismatic calcite concretions) from the floodplain to marine environments can serve to fingerprint floodplain reworking due to channel mobility. We quantified the abundance of floodplain-sourced Microcodium grains reworked in fluvial to marine sandstones pre-dating and coeval to the PETM in the Southern Pyrenees (Tremp Basin, Spain). Laser ablation–inductively coupled plasma–mass spectrometry U-Pb ages on calcite confirm the Thanetian age of the Microcodium grains. Our data show a four-fold increase in the export of floodplain sediments to the marine domain during the PETM. Moreover, we show that this is predominantly due to enhanced channel mobility, reworking channel banks and interfluves, with increased erosion in the hinterland as a secondary factor. This increase in floodplain reworking would correspond to an increase in biospheric carbon burial flux by a factor of 2.2. Therefore, enhanced channel mobility and fine-grain sediment transport to the oceans during a climatic perturbation such as the PETM may constitute an important negative feedback mechanism. Active orogens balance tectonic rock uplift with erosion, commonly via river incision coupled to landslide denudation of “threshold” hillslopes, but sediment’s role in this feedback is unclear. We report fluvial geometry and sediment size, prevalence, and mobility across two ≤600-m-tall gneissic northern Alaska Range anticlines that sustain steep landslide-clad hillslopes but differ 10× in late Pleistocene–recent rock uplift rate. Enigmatically, the river steepens and narrows prominently across the fold experiencing slow surface uplift (∼0.5 mm/ yr) but remains low-gradient and wide downstream across the anticline undergoing rapid differential rock uplift (∼5 mm/yr). Frequent bedload mobilization across both folds implies fluvial equilibration to sediment transport despite discrepant channel forms and similarly prevalent hillslope-derived boulders. Boulder prevalence correlates significantly with channel slope and width on the slowly uplifting anticline, but weakly on the rapidly uplifting anticline. Strong correlations across the tectonically quiescent anticline may reflect local incision-suppressing boulder aggradation that forces the channel to steepen and narrow, consistent with field observations. Conversely, weak correlations across the rapidly uplifting anticline imply that boulders may modulate expected tectonic channel adjustment by preferentially aggrading to subdue slope, and deflecting frequently mobile bedload to drive lateral erosion that maintains channel width, steepens adjacent hillslopes, and perpetuates hillslope-channel coupling. Hence, hillslope-derived boulders may occupy important roles in regulating feedbacks between river incision and landslide erosion that differ fundamentally at high and low tectonic rates. The present paper focuses on the investigation of the turbulent characteristics of an open-channel flow by employing the micropolar model. The underlying model has already been proven to correctly describe the secondary phase of turbulent wall-bounded flows. The open-channel case comprises an ideal candidate to further test the micropolar model as many environmental flows carry a secondary phase, the behavior of which is of great interest for applications such as sedimentation transport and debris flow. Direct Numerical Simulations (DNSs) have been carried out on an open channel for R e b = 11,200 based on mean crossectional velocity, channel height, and the fluid kinematic viscosity. The simulated results are compared against previous experimental as well as Langrangian DNS data of similar flows, with excellent agreement. The micropolar model is capable of describing the same problem but in an Eulerian frame, thus significantly simplifying the computational cost and complexity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This review updates the different categories and formulations of the calculation of longshore sediment transport (LST) and summarizes their advantages and disadvantages. Most of these methodologies require calibration for areas different from those studied by their authors. Thus, a method of validation and calibration is presented here by processing satellite images with CoastSat software (release v 2.7) to determine accretion and erosion volumes. This low-cost methodology was applied to Salaverry Beach (Peru) to compare the results of the different formulations. The Mississippi River Delta Front (MRDF) is a subaqueous apron of rapidly deposited and weakly consolidated sediment extending from the subaerial portions of the Birdsfoot Delta of the Mississippi River, long characterized by mass-wasting sediment transport. Four (4) depositional environments dominate regionally (an undisturbed topset apron, mudflow gully, mudflow lobe, and prodelta), centering around mudflow distribution initiated by a variety of factors (hurricanes, storms, and fluid pressure). To better understand the spatiotemporal scales of the events as well as the controlling processes, eight cores (5.8–8.0 m long) taken offshore from the South Pass (SP) and the Southwest Pass (SWP) were analyzed for gamma density, grain size, sediment fabric (X-radiography), and geochronology (210Pb/137Cs radionuclides). Previous work has focused on the deposition of individual passes and has been restricted to <3 m core penetration, limiting its geochronologic completeness. Building on other recent studies, within the mudflow gully and lobe cores, the homogeneous stepped profiles of 210Pb activities and the corresponding decreased gamma density indicate the presence of gravity-driven mass failures. 210Pb/137Cs indicates that gully sedimentary sediment accumulation since 1953 is greater than 580 cm (sediment accumulation rate [SAR] of 12.8 cm/y) in the southwest pass site, and a lower SAR of the South Pass gully sites (2.6 cm/y). This study shows that (1) recent dated mudflow deposits are identifiable in both the SWP and SP; (2) SWP mudflows have return periods of 10.7 y, six times more frequent than at the SP (66.7 y); (3) 210Pb inventories display higher levels in the SWP area, with the highest focusing factors in proximal/gully sedimentation, and (4) submarine landslides in both study areas remain important for sediment transport despite the differences in sediment delivery and discharge source proximity. Investigating different pier shapes and debris Finteractions in scour patterns is vital for understanding the risks to bridge stability. This study investigates the impact of different shapes of pier and debris interactions on scour patterns using numerical simulations with flow-3D and controlled laboratory experiments. The model setup is rigorously calibrated against a physical flume experiment, incorporating a steady-state flow as the initial condition for sediment transport simulations. The Fractional Area/Volume Obstacle Representation (FAVOR) technique and the renormalized group (RNG) turbulence model enhance the simulation's precision. The numerical results indicate that pier geometry is a critical factor influencing the scour depth. Among the tested shapes, square piers exhibit the most severe scour, with depths reaching 5.8 cm, while lenticular piers show the least scour, with a maximum depth of 2.5 cm. The study also highlights the role of horseshoe, wake, and shear layer vortices in determining scour locations, with varying impacts across different pier shapes. The Q-criterion study identified debris-induced vortex generation and intensification. The debris amount, thickness, and pier diameter (T/Y) significantly affect the scouring patterns. When dealing with high wedge (HW) debris, square piers have the largest scour depth at T/Y = 0.25, while lenticular piers exhibit a lower scour. When debris is present, the scour depth rises at T/Y = 0.5. Depending on the form of the debris, a significant fluctuation of up to 5 cm was reported. There are difficulties in precisely estimating the scour depth under complicated circumstances because of the disparity between numerical simulations and actual data, which varies from 6% for square piers with a debris relative thickness T/Y = 0.25 to 32% for cylindrical piers with T/Y = 0.5. The study demonstrates that while flow-3D simulations align reasonably well with the experimental data under a low debris impact, discrepancies increase with more complex debris interactions and higher submersion depths, particularly for cylindrical piers. A 3D large eddy simulation coupled with a free surface tracking scheme was used to simulate cross‐shore hydrodynamics as observed in a large wave flume experiment. The primary objective was to enhance the understanding of wave‐backwash interactions and the implications for observed morphodynamics. Two simulation cases were carried out to elucidate key processes of wave‐backwash interactions across two distinct stages: berm erosion and sandbar formation, during the early portion of a modeled storm. The major difference between the two cases was the bathymetry: one featuring a berm without a sandbar (Case I), and the other, featuring a sandbar without a berm (Case II) at similar water depth. Good agreement (overall Willmott's index of agreement greater than 0.8) between simulations and measured data in free surface elevation, wave spectrum, and flow velocities validated the model skill. The findings indicated that the bottom shear stress, represented by the Shields parameter, was significant in both cases, potentially contributing substantial sediment transport. Notably, the occurrence of intense wave‐backwash interactions were more frequent in the absence of a sandbar. These intense wave‐backwash interactions resulted in a pronounced horizontal pressure gradient, quantified by high Sleath parameters, exceeding the criteria for momentary bed failure. Additionally, a more vigorous turbulence‐bed interaction, characterized by near‐bed turbulent kinetic energy, was observed in the case lacking a sandbar, potentially augmenting sediment suspension. These insights are pivotal in understanding the mechanisms underlying berm erosion and how sandbar formation serves to protect further beach erosion. We studied the interactions between waves and the beach for two different beach shapes. First, we studied the beach before a storm characterized by a raised area called a berm at the shoreline. Then, we studied the beach during a storm, where the berm disappears but an underwater sandbar forms seaward from the shoreline. Comparing the two scenarios helped us understand how beaches change during different stages of a storm. We found that between the two, the way that the water moved along the bottom was different, which may cause distinct ways of sand movement. When there is no sandbar, the offshore‐directed flow following after wave breaking interacts more strongly with incoming waves. This process leads to significant changes in horizontal pressure and turbulent activity, possibly causing more movement of sand. Only around 40% of rivers globally have deltas, but the conditions which inhibit or facilitate river delta formation are not well understood. Many studies have investigated the response of delta development to marine and river conditions. However, few have investigated the limits of such processes beyond which delta formation may be prevented, and none have done so using numerical modeling. This is in part due to ambiguity in the definition of the term "delta," which can make identification difficult in ambiguous cases. Here we propose a systematic method for identifying deltas, based on: accumulation of sediment above the low tide water level; proximity of such deposits to the initial coastline; and the presence of active channels. We run 42 simulations with identical river (1280m3s−1) $(1280\ {\text{m}}^{3}{\text{s}}^{-1})$ and sediment (0.048m3s−1) $(0.048\ {\text{m}}^{3}{\text{s}}^{-1})$ discharges, under combinations of significant wave height and tidal range typical for coasts globally, and determine if/when a delta is formed by this definition. Where deltas do form, we classify four formational regimes—river‐controlled, river/tide‐controlled, wave‐controlled, and wave/tide‐controlled—and discuss the mechanisms of delta development for each regime. Furthermore, we find that, under the discharge conditions considered, delta formation is prevented for combinations of, approximately, significant wave heights of 2.0m $2.0\ \mathrm{m}$ and tidal ranges ≥3.0m ${\ge} 3.0\ \mathrm{m}$. We hypothesize that inhibition of delta formation can be explained as a consequence of sufficient marine‐driven alongshore sediment transport. This is tested by deriving a 1D alongshore sediment diffusion equation, and comparing predictions made using this formula to the cross‐shore integrated sediment volumes of the simulations. River channels are maintained by coordination between flow hydraulics, sediment supply, riparian vegetation, and sediment transport. This coordination is challenging to understand in natural flow regimes, where climatic and environmental drivers produce episodic flood and sediment supply events. To better understand the response of channels to flood sequences, we have undertaken laboratory flume experiments on sediment storage and export across a sequence of alternating hydrographs. Our experiments indicate that accumulated sediment storage before floods predicts sediment transport during floods, with sediment storage depletion during floods causing a nonlinear variation of sediment‐transport rates through time. Likewise, sediment storage between floods follows a growth‐to‐saturation pattern, whereby the sediment transport gradually increases toward the sediment feed rate depending on the occupation of available sediment storage zones. To describe these non‐linear variations, we developed a mathematical model which represents sediment transport and storage as a coupled dynamical system. This work highlights the crucial role that within‐channel sediment storage and its history play in determining sediment export in rivers. The rate of channel incision in bedrock rivers is often described using a power law relationship that scales erosion with drainage area. However, erosion in landscapes that experience strong rainfall gradients may be better described by discharge instead of drainage area. In this study, we test if these two end member scenarios result in identifiable topographic signatures in both idealized numerical simulations and in natural landscapes. We find that in simulations using homogeneous lithology, we can differentiate a posteriori between drainage area and discharge‐driven incision scenarios by quantifying the relative disorder of channel profiles, as measured by how well tributary profiles mimic both the main stem channel and each other. The more heterogeneous the landscape becomes, the harder it proves to identify the disorder signatures of the end member incision rules. We then apply these indicators to natural landscapes, and find, among eight test areas, no clear topographic signal that allows us to conclude a discharge or area‐driven incision rule is more appropriate. We then quantify the distortion in the channel steepness index induced by changing the incision rule. Distortion in the channel steepness index can also be driven by changes to the assumed reference concavity index, and we find that distortions in the normalized channel steepness index, frequently used as a proxy for erosion rates, is more sensitive to changes in the concavity index than to changes in the assumed incision rule. This makes it a priority to optimize the concavity index even under an unknown incision mechanism. To maintain a reasonable sediment regulation system in the Loess Plateau, it is critical to determine the effects of check dam construction on sediment production and topographic changes. An indoor simulation experiment was conducted to investigate sediment production at the outlet section of the gully and micro‐topographic changes within the channel before and after dam construction. The results showed that check dam significantly affected the run‐off and sediment transport processes in the watershed. Specifically, the cross‐sectional morphology index (η) and the width‐depth ratio increased by 10.23% and 40.44%, respectively, while sediment content and particle size decreased by 39.29% and 18.58%, respectively. Additionally, the relative importance of section parameters and micro‐topographic parameters that affect sediment production rate and particle size was ranked using the random forest algorithm. The roughness after check dam construction was identified as a relatively important topographic factor affecting sediment production and particle selection by erosion. Meandering rivers are complex geomorphic systems that play an important role in the environment. They provide habitat for a variety of plants and animals, help to filter water, and reduce flooding. However, meandering rivers are also susceptible to changes in flow, sediment transport, and erosion. These changes can be caused by natural factors such as climate change and human activities such as dam construction and agriculture. Studying meandering rivers is important for understanding their dynamics and developing effective management strategies. However, traditional methods such as numerical and analytical modeling for studying meandering rivers are time-consuming and/or expensive. Machine learning algorithms can be used to overcome these challenges and provide a more efficient and comprehensive way to study meandering rivers. In this study, we used machine learning algorithms to study the migration rate of simulated meandering rivers using semi-analytical model to investigate the feasibility of employing this new method. We then used machine learning algorithms such as multi-layer perceptron, eXtreme Gradient Boost, gradient boosting regressor, and decision tree to predict the migration rate. Asymmetric tidal dynamics are of great significance for material transport and morphological evolution in estuaries. The tidal dynamics of the macro-tidal Hangzhou Bay (HZB) are characterized by flood-ebb asymmetries, spring-neap asymmetries, surface-bottom asymmetries, and up-downstream asymmetries. The mechanisms of spatio-temporal asymmetric tides and lateral flows in HZB were studied through a fully calibrated three-dimensional numerical model. The results show that tidal tides, tidal currents, and tidal asymmetry in HZB varied specially and temporally. In general, the bay was mostly flood-dominant. Temporally, tidal duration asymmetry in the bay fluctuated between spring and neap tides, with larger skewness during spring tides and smaller skewness during neap tides. The locally produced overtides are the primary sources of shallow-water tides in the bay, and the interaction between the lunar semi-diurnal tide M2 and the solar semi-diurnal tide S2 generates shallow-water overtides and deforms tidal asymmetries. The dissipated tidal energy may consumed by the bottom friction, with less passed to the generated shallow water overtides M4 and M6 tides (AM4 = 12.07 cm, AM6 = 3.91 cm) when comparing with the experiments that open boundary is purely forced by M2 tide (AM4 = 13.63 cm, AM6 = 6.31 cm). The increased depth reduces the bottom friction and the convergence of volume, resulting in skewness values close to zero (γTDA = 0.220, γM2-M4 = 0.141, γM2-M4-M6 = −0.002, γM2-S2-MS4 = 0.105). The changes of tidal duration asymmetry caused by the increased channel convergence, reduced bay width, and reclaimed intertidal zone spatially vary in different parts. The bottom friction contributed to the generation of the shallow-water tides and asymmetries in the bay (the RVRs for M4 and M6 are −73.5% and −92.5%), while the Coriolis force (the RVRs for M4 and M6 are 4.8% and 8.9%) and nonlinear advection (the RVRs for M4 and M6 are −17.3% and − 21.8%) are minor factors. Sedimentary landforms on Earth and other planetary bodies are built through scour, transport, and deposition of sediment. Sediment connectivity refers to the hypothesis that pathways of sediment transport do not occur in isolation, but rather are mechanistically linked. In dryland river systems, one such example of sediment connectivity is the transport of fluvially deposited sediment by wind. However, predictive tools that can forecast fluvial‐aeolian sediment connectivity at meaningful scales are rare. Here we develop a suite of models for quantifying the availability of river‐sourced sediment for aeolian transport as a function of river flow, wind regime, and land cover across 168 km of the Colorado River in Grand Canyon, USA. We compare and validate these models using topographic changes observed over 10 years in a coupled river sandbar‐aeolian dunefield setting. The models provide a path forward for directly linking fluvial hydrology with the management and understanding of aeolian landscapes. Since the 1990s, analysis of cosmogenic nuclides, primarily 10Be, in quartz-bearing river sand, has allowed for quantitative determination of erosion rates at a basin scale. Paired measurements of in situ cosmogenic 26Al and 10Be in sediment are less common but offers insight into the history of riverine sediment moving down slopes and through drainage basins. Prolonged sediment burial (>105 years), a violation of assumptions underlying erosion rate calculations, is indicated by higher 26Al-based than 10Be-based erosion rates due to preferential loss of shorter-lived 26Al by decay when quartz is shielded from cosmic rays. Here, we use a global compilation of 26Al and 10Be data generated from quartz-bearing fluvial sediment samples (n = 624, including 121 new measurements) and calculate the discordance between erosion rates derived from each nuclide. We test for correlations between such discordance and topographic metrics for drainage basins, allowing us to infer the likelihood of sediment burial during transport in different geomorphic settings. We find that nearly half of samples (n = 276) exhibit discordance (> 1σ uncertainty) between erosion rates derived from 10Be and 26Al, indicating sediment histories that must include extended burial during residence on hillslopes and/or in the fluvial system after or during initial near-surface exposure. Physical basin parameters such as basin area, slope, and tectonic activity exhibit significant correlation with erosion rate discordance whereas climatic parameters have little correlation. Our analysis suggests that 26Al/10Be erosion rate discordance occurs more regularly in basins larger than 1,000 km2, particularly when such basins have low average slopes and are in tectonically quiescent terrains. Sediment sourced from smaller, steeper basins in tectonically active regions is more likely to have similar 10Be and 26Al erosion rates indicative of limited storage and limited burial during residence in the hillslope and fluvial sediment system. The data and analysis we present demonstrate that paired 26Al and 10Be analyses in detrital fluvial samples can provide a window into watershed processes, elucidating landscape behavior at different spatial scales and allowing a deeper understanding of both sediment routing systems and whether erosion rate assumptions are violated. Large lowland basins are more likely to transport detrital sediment that has experienced prolonged sediment storage and burial either on hillslopes and/or in fluvial networks; thus, erosion rates from such basins are lower limits due to nuclide decay during storage. The Changjiang Estuary and Hangzhou Bay system has experienced river damming and estuarine engineering in the last decades. However, few studies focused on the shifts in its sediment dynamics due to such human activities. In this study multi-decadal development of sediment dynamics in the transitional zone of the two large estuaries was analyzed, based on the synchronous hydrographic data in the winter of 2023, 2014 and 1983. The results revealed significant changes in regional hydrodynamics and suspended sediment transport, despite the continuous good correlations between the current velocity, suspended sediment concentration (SSC), water/sediment fluxes and tidal range. Specifically, the current velocity has been decreased by 8 - 21% after 2014, mainly due to the land reclamation (implemented around 2016) with several groins stretching into deep water and altering alongshore hydrodynamics. The SSC has decreased further by 29 - 38% in addition to the significant decrease during 1983 - 2014. The SSC changes are related to the combination of river damming which induced sediment load reduction and land reclamation which enclosed a large amount of sediment. Furthermore, the sediment transport from Changjiang Estuary to Hangzhou Bay decreased by 36% - 53%, explaining the observed bed erosion in the northern bay mouth in recent years. The Bohai Sea, known for being the lowest latitude seasonally frozen sea area in the world, experienced severe ice conditions with a 30-year recurrence period during the winter of 2009-2010. Water-sediment flux is a crucial parameter for water quality management in marine environment. Using a highly accurate three-dimensional hydrodynamic and sediment transport numerical model, the significant wave height (Hs), current velocity, suspended sediment concentration (SSC) and water-sediment flux in the Bohai Sea during ice-covered and ice-free conditions are compared. Our findings indicate that the current velocity and sediment resuspension decrease under the ice coverage, but increase at the edge of the ice. The net outflow tidal flux (TF) in winter under ice-free conditions accounts for 24.5% of the whole year. The net outflow TF increases by 32.7% during ice-covered conditions, primarily due to the pressure difference between high air pressure superimposing heavy sea ice in the northwest Bohai Sea and the low air pressure in Bohai Strait, resulting in increased ebb velocity and decreased flood velocity. The net outflow suspended sediment flux (SSF) during ice-free conditions in the winter is 2.32×109 kg, while SSF increases by 1.24 times during ice-covered conditions, leading to worse water quality in the outer sea. The decrease of TF in the southern part of the Bohai Strait and the reduction of suspended sediment concentration by nearly 15 mg/l lead to the significant decrease in SSF. We employ the methods of statistical mechanics to obtain closures for the balance equations of momentum and fluctuation kinetic energy that govern the ballistic motion of grains rebounding at a rigid, bumpy bed that are driven by turbulent or non-turbulent shearing fluids, in the absence of mid-trajectory collisions and fluid velocity fluctuations. We obtain semi-analytical solutions for steady and fully developed saltation over horizontal beds for the vertical profiles of particle concentration and stresses and fluid and particle velocities. These compare favourably with measurements in discrete-element numerical simulations in the wide range of conditions of Earth and other planetary environments. The predictions of the particle horizontal mass flux and its scaling with the amount of particles in the system, the properties of the carrier fluid and the intensity of the shearing also agree with numerical simulations and wind-tunnel experiments. The Tibetan Plateau (TP) is suffering from a substantial decline in terrestrial water storage (TWS) in exorheic basins, threatening water resources that are critical for ∼2 billion people downstream. TWS changes are commonly estimated using gravity satellites through observations of the total terrestrial mass storage (TMS) change, with an implicit assumption of a negligible contribution from sediment transport. Through long‐term (2002–2017) sediment flux observations in seven headwater basins on the TP, we reveal that the gravity satellite‐derived TMS has decreased at a rate of 3.85 ± 0.23 Gt yr−1 in the seven basins, of which 0.35 ± 0.04 Gt yr−1 is contributed by sediment transport. Neglecting this contribution leads to an overestimation of the TWS loss by 10.1 ± 1.3%, equivalent to the annual water demand of an additional 0.62 million people in the surrounding nations. Regionally, the overestimation is surprisingly high in the Indus River and Yarkant River basins, reaching up to 50.8%–77.6%. Green sea dykes, also known as ecosystem-based sea dykes, represent a novel type of coastal defense consisting of both traditional structural engineering and coastal ecosystems, designed to cope with the future trends of sea level rise and intensified storms. Here we focus on the mid-latitude mud coasts (eastern China in particular), which face the most prominent risks of storm surge, storm-induced giant waves, and shoreline erosion, and summarizes the scientific basis of green sea dykes and the current status of engineering practices. We show that the basic mechanisms of nearshore wave energy dissipation include bottom friction, sediment transport, and form drag. These explain the wave damping capacity of oyster reefs and salt marshes on mud coasts. In tidal flat environments, oyster growth increases frictional resistance and even causes wave breaking; the resuspension and transport of fine-grained sediments on salt marsh beds and the movement or resistance to hydrodynamic forcing of salt marsh vegetation stems effectively dissipate wave kinetic energy, and their efficiency increases with the elevation of the bed surface. Based on the wave damping capacity of oyster reefs and salt marshes on mud coasts, ecosystem-based sea dykes are being built in combination with traditional structured sea dykes. By utilizing natural tidal flats outside the dykes or implementing artificial modification projects, a certain scale of salt marshes and/or oyster reefs can be maintained, which serve to protect the sea dykes and enhance their wave resistance functions. From the perspective of system optimization, it is necessary to further improve the efficiency and sustainability of green sea dykes under constraints such as regional environment characteristics, ecosystem health, investment capacity, and ecological resilience. Related scientific issues include the theorization of the wave damping process of salt marshes, the niche and scale control of oyster reef and salt marsh ecosystems, the establishment of engineering standards and the design of the optimal form of sea dykes. Dams and artificial reservoirs can significantly alter the dynamics of sediment transport in a watercourse. Therefore, the main objective of this study is to assess the influence of the Pandeiros Small Hydroelectric Plant reservoir on sediment transport in the Pandeiros River. The study also aims to characterize the sediment composition and assess the correlation between total and suspended solids with turbidity, flow, and precipitation variables. The study was carried out in the Pandeiros River basin, Brazil, between May 2019 and January 2023. The following variables were analyzed: flow, turbidity, precipitation, total solids (fixed and volatile), and suspended solids (fixed and volatile). The results showed that, under the conditions observed during the study, the reservoir did not affect the concentration and composition of the sediments. It was found that the solids transported by the Pandeiros River are mostly composed of inorganic material. A positive correlation was observed between the variables, which was stronger when correlated with suspended solids. The correlation analysis indicated that precipitation is one of the main factors related to sediment transport in the Pandeiros River. In conclusion, the reservoir did not significantly affect the sediment concentration in the Pandeiros River. Based on field hydro-meteorological observations and sediment sampling data, this study analyzes sediment transport under normal conditions in the Fanshi offshore wind farm project area in Yangjiang, China. It was found that sediment transport in the engineering sea area is relatively stable, and seabed sediments are not easily mobilized. By building a tidal current–sediment mathematical model, the impact of wind farm construction on the erosion and deposition environment in the surrounding sea areas was studied. It was found that areas with significant accumulation are mainly located near the pile foundations of wind turbines. Furthermore, considering ocean dynamics, geological conditions, and wave–current interactions, different local erosion empirical formulas were used to calculate local erosion depth and range. The results show that Han Haiqian's formula and the HEC-18 formula, which consider wave velocity, are very close and more suitable for the actual conditions of this project. As turbine pile diameters increase, local scour depths and ranges also increase. This study preliminarily analyzes the basic scour characteristics of deep-sea wind turbines off the western coast of Guangdong Province, offering important design parameters for the construction of this project, and also providing a systematic and scientific method for studying local scour at turbine pile foundations.
