When sitdown strikes in five General Motors Corp. automobile and parts plants resulted in a and forced direct negotiations between national officers of both the corporation and the union, few of the workers involved realized that they were participating in the first important battle of a civil war which will largely determine the industrial progress of America during the next decade. For the attack on General Motors was basically an attack on one of the important sectors of Wall Street; other sectors are steel, oil, aluminum, and rubber.

The paramount and perhaps the one incontestable fact in the current extremely critical labor situation in the U.S. is that the high officials of the American Federation of Labor (AFL) — William Green and his "colleagues," as he calls them — have done everything in their power during the last year and a half to prevent the emergence of a great mass labor movement in this country and so far have been very successful in their efforts. A few weeks ago the author wrote about the situation in automobiles, where the AFL tactics evidently had also prevented workers from forming effective unions.

It is said that the United States is an experiment in transportation, and hitherto the genius would seem to have done much better with instruments for moving than with those for sitting still. The Americans built clipper ships, they built an unprecedented trackage of railroad, within one generation they supplied themselves with 23,000,000 instruments of private transportation called automobiles, and with roads to run them on in excess of those employed by Europe for five times as many people, they are doing well with airplanes, and they excel in instruments of communication, too, such as telephone or radio. If they build a fair, one can count on it that the Transportation Building and the Communications Building will be central. These things possess their imagination.

There it is, the most blood-curdling crime wave you ever dreamed of, with hold-ups happening every minute just around the corner, and guns popping and sinister automobiles racing by till you lose your breath, with masterminds calmly managing everything and the most wonderful French detectives insouciantly appearing and looking right through everybody. You needn't be afraid to ask anybody what it's all about. Everybody will be glad to tell you. One will assure you that it's the rotten drink, another that it's the last resort of generous spirits who miss the stuff; one will declare that it's the natural reaction from the hardness of military discipline, and another that it's what you might expect from the softness of the laws.

In June 1962, the Ford Motor Co. notified the association that it would no longer abide by the agreement. As time went on, “Ford wrote the association," some passenger-car divisions, including our own, interpreted the resolution somewhat freely. This erosion of the principle involved continued and the net result was an increasing emphasis by passenger-car divisions on speed, horsepower and racing." By now, said Ford, the resolution has "neither purpose nor effect."

Into the troubled sleep of traffic officers such an invention will bring nightmares reminiscent of the plague of locusts; and city planners who have dreamed of ridding in streets of congestion during this generation will throw up their hands in despair. The treaty port press of the Far East is a phenomenon unique in the history of journalism, and the foreign correspondents in China today occupy a position utterly unlike that of their colleagues in Western Europe. These newspapers and these correspondents are not subject to the ordinary domestic laws of China.

The Russian Consul sent his secretary with the author to make the rounds of the magnificent collection of secret service, passport and police department with which the would be modern Mongols toy. The ice was out at the edges and the water flowing swiftly.
