The article presents information related to upcoming events on rural sociology. The Program Committee for the Rural Sociological Society announces a call for papers for the annual meeting to be held in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, from August 25-27, 1972. Submission of papers is required by April 1, 1972. Abstract and text should be sent to Rabel J. Burdge, Program Chairman, Department of Sociology. University of Kentucky, Lexington, Kentucky 40506. A series of workshops is planned on topics of current interests to encourage more active participation in the program. This years program will reduce the number of formal presentations. Papers will be made available for distribution prior to the meeting. Graduate students are asked to submit papers to any session. Sessions organized by graduate students will review papers from all sources. The other information is that J.L. Charlton has directed a study now published by the University of Arkansas Agricultural Experiment Station. The co-author, Joseph F. Singer, also used the data for a Ph.D. disseration in economics, Charlton is currently directing a study of factors affecting the use of medical services in three subregions of Arkansas.

The article highlights the second International Congress of Parasitology in the U.S. It is stated that the organizers attempted to provide an official sponsorship for the corridor conferences and eliminate most of the formal presentations. This paper describes the results of a simulation study to examine the effects of different organizational structures on the performance of a dual-constraint job shop production system. A hypothetical shop in which machines and workers are constraining resources is the setting of the study. The shop consists of divisions comprised of work centers which, in turn, contain machines to which workers are assigned. There are fewer workers than machines. Variations in organizational structure are achieved by different allocations of a fixed number of work centers to the divisions. Each structure is studied for three levels of labor flexibility. Mean flow-time, flow-time variance, and worker transfers between divisions and work centers are used as performance measures. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the hospital service, where there are so many different disciplines, we have for a long time felt the need for a short course on supervisory skills. The line managers and I have got together and evolved a three-day course for supervisors, irrespective of whether they are head porters in small hospitals, staff nurses, administrators, domestic supervisors or therapists.

The article describes a strategy for creating workshop setting experiences that can influence the awareness on the part of the participant of his creative potential. It focuses on the importance of teacher's creativity in teaching. Teaching has been defined as an act of structuring or providing experiences that brought about changes in an anticipated direction. A sequence of experiences in a creativity and awareness workshop has been provided as examples of how readiness for awareness training can be increased with some possible decrease in the range of individual variance of readiness. The awareness trainer uses principles and techniques that can help the individual become the split and the nature, strengths and weaknesses of the two selves.

Information about several papers discussed at the twenty-third annual convention of the Southern Speech Association held in South Carolina in the first week of April 1953 is presented. The convention includes the annual Forensic Tournament directed by Frank B. Davis from Auburn and succeeded the annual Congress of Human Relations directed by P. Melville Larson from Texas Technology. It includes the three workshops held in April 4, which includes the Workshop in Speech and Hearing Disorders.

The DeRoy Award committee of the "Society for the Study of Social Problems" recommends that the DeRoy Award be divided between Martin A. Haskell for his research paper, "Toward a Reference Group Theory of Juvenile Delinquency" and to Orville R. Gursslin, Raymond G. Hunt and Jack L. Roach for their article, "Social Class and the Mental Health Movement" which was published in "Social Problems" and that "Honorable Mention" be awarded to Rose Hum Lee for her manuscript, "The Impact of the East and the West." The committee on sociology and social work of the "Society for the Study of Social Problems" presented two panels at the 1960 conference. A workshop of research papers and progress reports on social work research heard Joseph W. Eaton of University of Pittsburgh, Charles G. Chakerian of McCormick Theological Seminary and Otto Pollak of University of Pennsylvania.

There were hundreds of high schoolteachers, junior college instructors, counselors, school nurses, home advisors, social workers, ministers, and parent-teacher associations representatives who participated in the gathering. A detailed, personalized report is provided concerning the data gathered to determine whether a workship planned for Greek and Turkish Cypriotes was feasible and desirable, to formulate the goals of the enterprise, actually to recruit participants, and to ascertain some of the opinions and attitudes likely to be expressed during that workshop. The data could not be utilized, however, because a few days before the participants were to gather in Northern Italy the government of the Greek community on the island was overthrown and five days later an invasion by the Turks began. The article reports on the short course on marketing research conducted by the Chemical Marketing Research Association (CMRA) at the Americana Hotel in New York City from July 9 to 11, 1973. According to the author, the course is designed for people who have experienced in chemical marketing research for less than three years. In addition, the course is divided between lectures and workshop sessions, with a high degree of registrant involvement programmed into the curriculum. The faculty is comprised of senior marketing research and purchasing and commercial development personnel.

The major findings from this study are that 65 per cent of the clients achieved successful rehabilitation into private employment. Final classifications made at the conclusion of the workshop program were for the most part substantiated by the follow-up results, Age and previous work experience show a distinct lack of association with post-workshop job adjustment. Sex, education, primary handicap, and intelligence are associated with job adjustment, but not at a statistically significant level. Ninety per cent of the workshop graduates interviewed felt that the program was of some benefit to them. Benefits were in the areas of learning new tasks, gaining work experience, improvement in emotional well-being and motivation, feeling reinvigorated, and gains in physical stamina and strength. The article presents the two follow-up summer workshops held during 1964. One of the workshops was sponsored by the Family Life Education Department of Brigham Young University, located at Provo, Utah, which was attended by around 20 Utah high school teachers for home economics. The second workshop was held at Kansas State College of Pittsburgh, participated by a dozen Kansas home economics teachers. Both workshops dealt with only first perceptual experiences related to each of the chosen concepts, which are significant to understand the differences of individuals in rate of development, particularly during the study of child development, as well as family relations.

In this article the author states that because of the growing demand for courses in projective techniques that is arising in graduate schools, this article will deal with curricula designed to meet these academic demands. The author remarks that if one is limited to a one year course it should be entitled "Introduction to Projective Techniques" and it should be understood that the student must expect to continue his training in special schools or workshops after his four years in graduate academic training are completed if he expects to master any of these techniques.

The article describes a new approach to teaching elementary economics. It was stimulated both by experience with Economic Workshops of Tennessee Council on Economic Education and by Report of American Economic Association on "The Teaching of Undergraduate Economics." In the report, economist Laurence Leamer urged that economists interested in general education should seek to build a cumulative literature on their subject. Progress in economic education is hardly to be made in the next sixty years if one persists in retracing previously trod paths. According to leamer, an economist doing research ordinarily proceeds by finding out how far previous workers have advanced knowledge of the subject, he then builds on past work, trying to make a new contribution on which other workers in turn will build. An economist writing on economic education confines himself to his own limited experience and his own limited thinking and he does not bother to inquire whether he is saying anything new. Leamer states that such contributions are not valuable.

Using workshop methods of group planning, discussion, and the planning of individual study programs, the summer workshop will open on the college campus in Plainfield, Vermont, on July 3, 1950 and will close August 11, 1950. Ohio rural ministers will receive scholarships covering all expenses for the minister's short course at Oberlin College, July 10-28, 1950. The Editors of Rural Sociology have made a contract with University Microfilms of Ann Arbor, Michigan, to have the journal microfilmed beginning with no. 1 vol. 15.

An application of the statistical control of time standards developed by the author has, quite unexpectedly, created the possibility of a further application of this method as an indicator of organisational deficiencies in industry which, at the same time, makes it possible to locate these deficiencies in the respective plants, departments and workshops. This article presents a study on the effects of a workshop and use of specially developed science materials on fifth grade science classroom practices in the U.S. The effective utilization of materials developed for elementary grade science instruction presumes on the part of the teacher a knowledge of instructional strategies which will accomplish the objectives of the materials. A time sampling procedure developed by the Montgomery County Department of Research personnel was utilized to sample the classroom activities of teachers and student groups. A total of 91 fifth-grade teachers from 38 school participated in one of three science workshops held during the 1965-1966 school year.

The article presents information on developing open communication about sex with youth. The discussion methods used in a workshop on the Youth-Adult Communication on Values offered at Oregon State University in Corvallis, Oregon, in June,1965, were developed throughout years of practical experience with youth groups in a variety of settings-school and church had been found effective with the whole adolescent age spectrum from junior high through college. Teenagers are often overconfident about their ability to be open in a mixed group and may be reluctant to separate. The adult discussion leader will need to take the responsibility for providing this kind of structure. While peer groups are the main source of sex information for youth, there is rarely open communication past the junior high school years as the need to protect prestige or reputation tends to create a barrier, especially on topics such as masturbation and homosexuality. Both the immediate evaluation by workshop members and the one conducted by mail indicated that the experience had been very satisfying to both youth and adults. For many boys and girls, it had been their first opportunity to talk so freely in the presence of adults.
