This paper describes the results of a simulation study to examine the effects of different organizational structures on the performance of a dual-constraint job shop production system. A hypothetical shop in which machines and workers are constraining resources is the setting of the study. The shop consists of divisions comprised of work centers which, in turn, contain machines to which workers are assigned. There are fewer workers than machines. Variations in organizational structure are achieved by different allocations of a fixed number of work centers to the divisions. Each structure is studied for three levels of labor flexibility. Mean flow-time, flow-time variance, and worker transfers between divisions and work centers are used as performance measures. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the hospital service, where there are so many different disciplines, we have for a long time felt the need for a short course on supervisory skills. The line managers and I have got together and evolved a three-day course for supervisors, irrespective of whether they are head porters in small hospitals, staff nurses, administrators, domestic supervisors or therapists.
The aim of this course is to make course members more aware of their supervisory obligations and to help them to increase existing skills and knowledge. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

The awareness trainer uses principles and techniques that can help the individual become the split and the nature, strengths and weaknesses of the two selves.

A detailed, personalized report is provided concerning the data gathered to determine whether a workship planned for Greek and Turkish Cypriotes was feasible and desirable, to formulate the goals of the enterprise, actually to recruit participants, and to ascertain some of the opinions and attitudes likely to be expressed during that workshop. The data could not be utilized, however, because a few days before the participants were to gather in Northern Italy the government of the Greek community on the island was overthrown and five days later an invasion by the Turks began. The emphasis is upon the clinical or practical experience gained from this aborted attempt, which might be useful in future enterprises. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

ECONOMICS ,ECONOMICS education ,COLLEGE students ,ADULT education workshops ,ECONOMICS teachers ,ELEMENTARY education - Abstract
The article describes a new approach to teaching elementary economics. It was stimulated both by experience with Economic Workshops of Tennessee Council on Economic Education and by Report of American Economic Association on "The Teaching of Undergraduate Economics." In the report, economist Laurence Leamer urged that economists interested in general education should seek to build a cumulative literature on their subject. Progress in economic education is hardly to be made in the next sixty years if one persists in retracing previously trod paths. According to leamer, an economist doing research ordinarily proceeds by finding out how far previous workers have advanced knowledge of the subject, he then builds on past work, trying to make a new contribution on which other workers in turn will build. An economist writing on economic education confines himself to his own limited experience and his own limited thinking and he does not bother to inquire whether he is saying anything new. Leamer states that such contributions are not valuable.

The major findings from this study are that 65 per cent of the clients achieved successful rehabilitation into private employment. Final classifications made at the conclusion of the workshop program were for the most part substantiated by the follow-up results, Age and previous work experience show a distinct lack of association with post-workshop job adjustment. Sex, education, primary handicap, and intelligence are associated with job adjustment, but not at a statistically significant level. Ninety per cent of the workshop graduates interviewed felt that the program was of some benefit to them. Benefits were in the areas of learning new tasks, gaining work experience, improvement in emotional well-being and motivation, feeling reinvigorated, and gains in physical stamina and strength. In general, no substantial changes in personality and social adjustment were observed, although some cases did show some improvement in this area. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

48. The National Book Awards.

AWARD presentations ,LITERARY prizes ,BOOKS ,ADULT education workshops ,IDEOLOGICAL conflict - Abstract
The article presents information related to the week of National Book Awards, organized in the U.S. The day before the awards ceremony, in both the morning "Workshop for Book Editors" and in the afternoon symposium "Poetry Now," there were visibly open rents in the smooth fabric the book and culture industry prefers to present in public. The afternoon session underlined what had been made apparent in the earlier book editors' discussion, that added to the other dangerous splits which exist in the country, there is an enormous gap between the intellectual and creative community on the one hand and those who claim to express the tastes of the nation's mass audience on the other.

This article reports on an experimental program with working with high school teachers called Insurance Education Workshop, which was conducted as part of the regular summer session at Drake University in the summer of 1970. The idea of a program of this kind originated in discussions concerning a suggested one-day conference for Driver Education teachers. High school Driver Education courses customarily include study of automobile insurance. It was felt that most teachers of these courses probably had no academic training in insurance, and hence would benefit from a conference in which various aspects of automobile insurance were studied. The main objective of the Insurance Education Workshop, therefore, was to enable the participants to become more effective insurance educators. The subject matter of the Workshop was similar to that treated in a conventional first course in Risk and Insurance, with modifications taking into account the particular interests of high school teachers and their students. Risk theory and risk management, for example, were de-emphasized, while automobile, homeowners, life and social insurance were stressed. advance publicity. The workshop was listed in the university catalog as both Insurance 131 in the College of Business Administration and as Education 131 in the College of Education. The great majority of students enrolled through the Education College. Listing the course in this manner meant that the Workshop would provide credit toward a Masters degree in Education; the attainment of such credit is what brings high school teachers back to the college campus.
