This paper deals with a formerly quiet French-Canadian country town, now transformed into one of the leading Canadian centres of textile manufacture. Specifically, it describes the present competitive position of various classes in the town and relate the relevant facts to traditional life-objectives and expectations. Since but one case is presented, the treatment cannot be considered comparative in the full sense. A similar analysis could be made profitably in any community undergoing this type of change. The paper makes explicit use of the concept of position and implicit reference to the concept of status. Position is an individual's place in a competitive system. Status is an attribute of a person in society. Subjectively, it consists of his own definition of his place within a system of recognized duties and privileges; objectively, it is the recognition that the person occupies in fact, such a place. In a well integrated system of life, status and position tend to correspond. Each type of position in the existing competitive system would, in the logically ideal case, be defined as a status.

The article presents discussions by economists on various papers that are published in the May 1, 1953 issue of the journal "American Economic Review." The author states that economist John H. Dales paper is an application of location theory to the problem of the industrial potential of a region. It highlights certain requirements, which must be fulfilled before a region can become industrialized and which might be neglected without a location approach. The author states that Dales has constructed a macroscopic theory in which industrial structures or regions are units and not individual plants. He has, however, refrained from attempting to define the region. Much of the discussion relates to this weakness in the argument deriving from the lack of a precise unit. The author first accepts Dales premise that Central Canada can be distinguished as an economic region and comments on certain conclusions made by Dales. The author makes it clear that the low fuel-electricity consumption ratio in Quebec is attributable to the absence of heavy fuel-using industries and to the presence of industries, which consume large quantities of power. High inputs of either power or fuel are characteristic of plants in early stages of manufacturing and not in consumer goods plants. Thus, the low fuel-electricity ratio is not the result of the attractive force which cheap power has for light manufacturing plants in relation to that of cheap fuel.

A series of related experiments investigated the relationship between naturally established teacher expectation and IQ change. Subjects were 109 grade 1 and 2 pupils from an average socioeconomic area of Montreal. Results show no linear relationship between teacher expectation and IQ gain scores either with or without the partialing out of initial IQ scores. A significant relationship was found between negative discrepant teacher expectation and IQ change in children with superior intellectual potential. The use of IQ testing in the primary grades is discussed, and suggestions are made concerning both teacher training and in-service training programs in the light of these findings. This article provides information on an invitation made by the Program Committees of the American Sociological Association (ASA) for members to submit their suggestions for the 1974 program in Montreal, Quebec. President-elect Peter Blau has scheduled a meeting of his program committee on February 3 and 4. The VIII World Congress of the International Sociological Association will be held in Ontario the week before 1974 ASA meeting in Montreal.

The article presents a study on the botanical conditions of the Morgan Aboretum in southern Quebec Province. One quadrat for each of the three woodland areas were established, where different plant species were measured and listed. Observations showed that in the Fagetum consociation, an area hardly disturbed and locally developed on dry podsolic terrain, the Fagus grandifolia was dominant. The Aceretum sacchari quadrat was generally mixed but unstable and was dominated by sugar maples. The Pinetum strobi-Tsugosum quadrat, a mature woodland located on a raised sandy terrain, was dominated by the Pinus strobus and Tsuga canadensis.

Most of the numerous studies of differential fertility are based either on census or vital registration records, which are substantially complete or on large portions of a population, which are considered as samples. Before the nature of sampling error was understood it seemed dangerous to base conclusions on a small number of cases, but this need no longer be so. Small samples may make possible investigations, which avoid the limitations of census tables in which only a few variables can be cross-tabulated. In any serious attempt to study the effect of a particular variable, freed from the effects of other relevant variables, at least ten directions of simultaneous cross-classification are required rather than the three or four which is the maximum usually given in a census. An earlier sample investigation of French Catholic families in the Province of Quebec aimed to ascertain whether families living near cities had fewer children than those living farther away. The objects of this article are to find (a) whether the relationship between distance from cities and family size which was revealed for French Catholic families of Quebec holds for English Protestant families of Ontario, (b) whether the direct relationship between education and family size found for Quebec holds also for Ontario and (c) to ascertain the differences in family size between Quebec and Ontario for groups similar in age at marriage, etc.

This article discusses the highlights of the First International Seminar of the International Scientific Commission of the Family, on the campus of the Université Laval in Quebec. The seminar aimed at bringing together a limited number of scientists from various countries and representing various disciplines so that they could appraise family policy. The last day of the seminar was devoted to conclusions drawn from the previous days' discussions and the formulation of research proposals. Several research proposals were suggested and registered.
