In 1895, Vic Messenger, a member of the first class of Stanford University, came to Glendale to manage Ryder Lumber and Hardware Company. With him, he carried 400 books, all of which he donated as the first library collection available to the public. Two years later, he built a library building at the north end of the Ryder facility, and other members of the community began to donate their books, also. In 1898, the Glendale Public Library Association was formed. People paid $5 a share (a large sum in those days!) for borrowing privileges. That same year, Ryder moved to what is now 58th Drive and Glendale. The books were moved also, this time to the second floor of the store. Vic Messenger became the "official" volunteer librarian. Around 1900, the Odd Fellows took over the Ryder building, and the library moved from the hardware store to the brick schoolhouse. The Woman's Club kept it open on Saturday afternoons until the schoolhouse was torn down in 1915, and for several years, the library was without a home. Eventually, the Woman's Club moved the library to a tiny white frame building built around "the world's biggest flagpole" in the middle of Murphy Park. In 1922, the library became a department of the City of Glendale with budget of $500.

This is the eighth in a report series reviewing Soviet literature on ground support equipment. It is based on materials available in the collections of the Library of Congress and on materials received by the Aerospace Information Division prior to 29 March 1963. The broad areas of interest covered are as follows: (1) operational employment and philosophy; (2) missile data; (3) facilities; (4) transport; (5) launch site; (6) ground support equipment; (7) natural environmental conditions; (8) personnel; (9) research and development facilities; (10) packaging, preservations, and storage. The present (eighth) report deals with the following topics: (4) transport; (5) launch site, E6 accessories-gantries; natural environmental conditions; (10) packaging, preservation, and storage A2 containers.

The guide is intended to introduce to APL staff members the variety of abstracting and indexing journals available in the collections of the APL libraries. These bibliographic tools are of great value in searching the literature, particularly when exploring a new field. Most scientists are acquainted with the abstract journals in their immediate specialties, but are not so familiar with those in disciplines impinging on their own, which may also include material pertinent to their own work. This publication is being issued in the hope of making these useful resources better known to APL staff members. Attention is called to those publications listed in the subject index under 'Current Awareness.' This group of journals is designed to give the most rapid notice possible of new research, including, in some cases, papers not yet published. They constitute a valuable source of current information, preceding the abstract journals by several months in most cases.

This annotated bibliography is based on Soviet opensource materials available at the Aerospace Technology Division and the Library of Congress and covers the years 1955 through 1960. Information not confined to the assigned subject has been included because of its broad implications for study in this field. Titles of Soviet monographs are given in transliterated form, followed by the English translation. Library of Congress call numbers are included at the end of an entry when the item is cataloged and available in the collections of the Library. Call numbers of journals and periodicals frequently referred to in the bibliography are given once, at their first appearance. An annotated literature survey of Soviet-bloc research for the period 1957 to June 1963 on (1) combined auroral and airglow reviews, (2) airglow (day, night, twilight), (3) auroras (spectra and excitation mechanisms), (4) noctilucent clouds, (5) zodiacal light, (6) gegenschein, (7) twi light, and (8) instrumentation is presented. Entries are arranged alphabetically by author within each of the major subject groups. Library of Congress call numbers are included at the end of an entry when the item is cataloged and available in the collections of the Library of Congress. Where the original source is not available, a secondary source is indicated. An Introduction, describing the main developments of Soviet research during the period 19571963, precedes the bibliographic entries. The ninth in a series of reports is presented reviewing Soviet literature on ground support equipment. This report is based on materials received by the Aerospace Information Division between March 29 and June 26, 1963, which covers the following broad areas: Transport; launch site; and packaging, preservation, and storage. An annotated bibliography is presented (plus Appendix) of Soviet, Soviet-bloc, and American scientific and technical articles and monographs related to high-altitude balloons and their application in geophysics. The materials included in the bibliography have been derived from opensource specialized technical and popular scientific periodicals available at the Aerospace Information Division and the Library of Congress. Titles of Soviet monographs are given in transliterated form followed by the English translation. Titles of German monographs are given in the original German followed by the English translation. The entries in the annotated bibliography and the appendix are arranged alphabetically by author. Annotations are provided where clarification is conside ed necessary.
