Presents two papers which examine land use in the vicinity of Dallas, Texas. "A Land Use Record in the Blackland Prairies of Texas," by Helen M. Strong; "Influence on Contrasted Soil Types Upon Changing Land Values Near Grapevine, Texas," by Edwin J Foscue.

The article focuses on the origin and progress of the Texas labor archives. During the Southern Historical Association's meeting in Memphis in November 1966 a group of mostly young historians organized the Association of Southern Labor Historians (SHA). Its purpose was to promote Southern labor history by encouraging the collection of labor records and the delivery of labor papers at meetings concurrent with those of SHA. Inspired by this development, professor George Green of the University of Texas Arlington history department talked with the university librarian, John Hudson, about the absence of primary resource materials for graduate and undergraduate study in history at UTA and the lack of recent research in the South and Southwest on the history of labor. Professor Howard Lackman of the history department joined in the series of conversations. Researchers learned that no university in the Southwest was actively collecting labor records and that the labor community, possessing tons of non-current records, needed and wanted a labor archives.

The article presents various newsletters related to the labor history. The American Historical Association Meeting will be held in the month of December, 1968. The Labor Historians will sponsor two sessions of the American Historical Association in Chicago. The Pacific Northwest Labor History Conference met last April on the campus of Gonzaga University, Spokane, Washington. 65 individuals from academic community and trade unionists attended the conference. The Association of Southern Labor Historians was formed during the 1966 meeting of the Southern Historical Association. The President of the Association of Southern Labor Historians is Professor George Green of the University of Texas, Arlington, Texas. The Chicago Historical Society has the papers of John Fitzpatrick, relating largely to his work as President of the Chicago Federation of Labor. It contains some information on the Chicago Journeymen Horse Shoers Union, the Labor Party of Cook County, and the Farmer Labor Parties of Cook County and the United States.

Riverine long-lot original surveys were employed many parts of Texas for about 150 years, beginning in the Spanish period and extending well into the era of statehood. No precedent for the use of long-lots was found either in Spain or New Spain, The evidence suggests that long-lots were diffused to Texas from Central Europe, by way of northern France, Québec, and the French colonies in Missouri and Louisiana. The Bonjean reputational technique of identifying community leaders is employed in two small Texas communities differing vastly in demographic and economic characteristics. The rankings of leaders revealed a highly visible power structure in both communities with few concealed leaders (those ranked higher by key influentials than by lower-ranking influentials) and few symbolic leaders (the opposite ranking pattern). High visibility in vastly dissimilar towns is discussed in terms of (low) magni-complexity (Bonjean) and preponderantly horizontal linkages (Warren) found in small communities; this suggests that the Bonjean technique is a more valuable instrument in larger communities. In retrospect it appears that the extensive grasslands of the American West stood as an open invitation to the pioneers to establish a grazing or range economy. However, the woodsman settlers coming from the East never conceived, projected, or defined a suitable range economy, and so it was through the ‘side door’ or ‘back door’ of Texas that an appropriated system of grazing burst northward across the Plains following the Civil War. The system, commonly identified as ranching, was appropriated from Spanish America, and was an import from the grasslands of northern Spain. The American woodsman challenged this intrusion with a series of inept land alienation laws, largely based on a variety of geographic misconceptions conceived and formulated within his system of values and verifies. The misconceptions expressed themselves mainly in the efforts of the rainmakers, the irrigators, and the exponents of dry farming. Spatial variability in consumer attraction to retail firms may be considered a function of the location of individual retail establishments. A statistical analysis of spatial relationships of important locational considerations was conducted in the city of Waco, Texas. The results of the analysis indicate that location of competition and investment factors are extremely important considerations when attempting to explain differences in the number of consumers attracted to retail firms. Within the ante-bellum South were two distinct economic regions 1) the Lower South, composed of states fronting on the Gulf and Atlantic coasts, an area dominated by the slave-cotton system, and 2) the Upper South, represented by inland states like Tennessee, Kentucky, Arkansas, and Missouri, where slaveless yeoman farmers were dominant and cotton was scarce. The position of Texas in this southern dichotomy has never been adequately investigated, a deficiency which prompted the present study. It was found that the state of Texas, by 1860, was divided, like the South as a whole, into two clearly defined areas, one of which was typically lower southern in its economy and society, the other of which bore the unmistakable imprint of the Upper South. The recognition of this fundamental division is a major aid to the understanding of the geography of nineteenth-century Texas.

The article presents a study which investigates the potential of leather as an art material conducted by the thirteen graduate students of the Department of Art of Texas Tech University in Lubbock. The students explore the inherent qualities of leather through individual and group works. During the investigation, the research group found that leather can be used as a substitute for standard printmaking media and other printing process. Also, the students discovered that the leather's permanency and strength makes it a compatible material to combine with various yarns for creative weaving.

The article presents information about sources and methods used in the compilation of the map, "Population Origin Groups in Rural Texas." By itself, the map is of value, but it will attain greater usefulness and importance if research efforts are made to relate the origins pattern to various cultural, political, economic, and environmental distributions. Too often, perhaps, researchers fail to use the vast storehouse of geographical information possessed by these rural people. Certain individuals have been especially helpful and deserve mention. They are farmers, county newspaper editors, rural ministers.
