Singlet fission may boost photovoltaic efficiency [by transforming a singlet exciton into two triplet excitons and thereby doubling the number of excited charge carriers. The primary step of singlet fission is the ultrafast creation of the correlated triplet pair. While several mechanisms have been proposed to explain this step, none has emerged as a consensus. The challenge lies in tracking the transient excitonic states. Here we use time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy to observe the primary step of singlet fission in crystalline pentacene. Our results suggest a charge-transfer mediated mechanism with a hybridization of Frenkel and charge-transfer states in the lowest bright singlet exciton. We gained intimate knowledge about the localization and the orbital character of the exciton wave functions recorded in momentum maps. This allowed us to directly compare the localization of singlet and bitriplet excitons and decompose energetically overlapping states based on their orbital character. Two-dimensional quantum spin Hall (QSH) insulators are a promising material class for spintronic applications based on topologically-protected spin currents in their edges. Yet, they have not lived up to their technological potential, as experimental realizations are scarce and limited to cryogenic temperatures. These constraints have also severely restricted characterization of their dynamical properties. Here, we report on the electron dynamics of the novel room-temperature QSH candidate bismuthene after photoexcitation using time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. We map the transiently occupied conduction band and track the full relaxation pathway of hot photocarriers. Intriguingly, we observe photocarrier lifetimes much shorter than in \red{conventional} semiconductors. This is ascribed to the presence of topological in-gap states already established by local probes. Indeed, we find spectral signatures consistent with these earlier findings. NaOsO3 has recently attracted significant attention for the strong coupling between its electronic band structure and magnetic ordering. Here, we used time-resolved magnetic x-ray diffraction to determine the timescale of the photoinduced antiferromagnetic dynamics in NaOsO3. Our measurements are consistent with a sub-100 fs melting of the antiferromagnetic long-range order that occurs significantly faster than the lattice dynamics as monitored by the transient change in intensity of selected Bragg structural reflections, which instead show a decrease of intensity on a timescale of several ps.

Characterization of the electronic band structure of solid state materials is routinely performed using photoemission spectroscopy. Recent advancements in short-wavelength light sources and electron detectors give rise to multidimensional photoemission spectroscopy, allowing parallel measurements of the electron spectral function simultaneously in energy, two momentum components and additional physical parameters with single-event detection capability. Efficient processing of the photoelectron event streams at a rate of up to tens of megabytes per second will enable rapid band mapping for materials characterization. We describe an open-source workflow that allows user interaction with billion-count single-electron events in photoemission band mapping experiments, compatible with beamlines at 3rd and 4rd generation light sources and table-top laser-based setups. The workflow offers an end-to-end recipe from distributed operations on single-event data to structured formats for downstream scientific tasks and storage to materials science database integration. Both the workflow and processed data can be archived for reuse, providing the infrastructure for documenting the provenance and lineage of photoemission data for future high-throughput experiments. We use femtosecond electron diffraction to study ultrafast lattice dynamics in the highly correlated antiferromagnetic (AF) semiconductor NiO. Using the scattering vector (Q) dependence of Bragg diffraction, we introduce a Q-resolved effective lattice temperature, and identify a nonthermal lattice state with preferential displacement of O compared to Ni ions, which occurs within ~0.3 ps and persists for 25 ps. We associate this with transient changes to the AF exchange striction-induced lattice distortion, supported by the observation of a transient Q-asymmetry of Friedel pairs. The momentum-dependent orbital character in crystalline solids, referred to as orbital texture, is of capital importance in the emergence of symmetry-broken collective phases, such as charge density waves as well as superconducting and topological states of matter. By performing extreme ultraviolet multidimensional angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy for two different crystal orientations linked to each other by mirror symmetry, we isolate and identify the role of orbital texture in photoemission from the transition metal dichalcogenide 1T-TiTe2. By comparing our experimental results with theoretical calculations based on both a quantitative one-step model of photoemission and an intuitive tight-binding model, we unambiguously demonstrate the link between the momentum-dependent orbital orientation and the emergence of strong intrinsic linear dichroism in the photoelectron angular distributions. Our results represent an important step towards going beyond band structure (eigenvalues) mapping and learning about electronic wavefunction and orbital texture of solids by exploiting matrix element effects in photoemission spectroscopy.

Review of scientific instruments 92(5), 053703 (2021). doi:10.1063/5.0046567, The performance of time-resolved photoemission experiments at fs-pulsed photon sources is ultimately limited by the e–e Coulomb interaction, downgrading energy and momentum resolution. Here, we present an approach to effectively suppress space-charge artifacts in momentum microscopes and photoemission microscopes. A retarding electrostatic field generated by a special objective lens repels slow electrons, retaining the k-image of the fast photoelectrons. The suppression of space-charge effects scales with the ratio of the photoelectron velocities of fast and slow electrons. Fields in the range from −20 to −1100 V/mm for E$_{kin}$ = 100 eV to 4 keV direct secondaries and pump-induced slow electrons back to the sample surface. Ray tracing simulations reveal that this happens within the first 40 to 3 μm above the sample surface for E$_{kin}$ = 100 eV to 4 keV. An optimized front-lens design allows switching between the conventional accelerating and the new retarding mode. Time-resolved experiments at E$_{kin}$ = 107 eV using fs extreme ultraviolet probe pulses from the free-electron laser FLASH reveal that the width of the Fermi edge increases by just 30 meV at an incident pump fluence of 22 mJ/cm$^2$ (retarding field −21 V/mm). For an accelerating field of +2 kV/mm and a pump fluence of only 5 mJ/cm$^2$, it increases by 0.5 eV (pump wavelength 1030 nm). At the given conditions, the suppression mode permits increasing the slow-electron yield by three to four orders of magnitude. The feasibility of the method at high energies is demonstrated without a pump beam at E$_{kin}$ = 3830 eV using hard x rays from the storage ring PETRA III. Orthorhombic $\mathrm{HoMn}{\mathrm{O}}_{3}$ is a multiferroic in which Mn antiferromagnetic order induces ferroelectricity. A second transition occurs within the multiferroic phase, in which a strong enhancement of the ferroelectric polarization occurs concomitantly to antiferromagnetic ordering of Ho $4f$ magnetic moments. Using the element selectivity of resonant x-ray diffraction, we study the magnetic order of the Mn $3d$ and Ho $4f$ moments. We explicitly show that the Mn magnetic order is affected by the Ho $4f$ magnetic ordering transition. Based on the azimuthal dependence of the $(0\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}q\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}0)$ and $(0\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}1\ensuremath{-}q\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}0)$ magnetic reflections, we suggest that the Ho $4f$ order resembles an $ac$ cycloid. Using nonresonant diffraction, we show that the magnetically induced polar lattice distortion is unaffected by the Ho ordering, suggesting a mechanism through which the Ho order affects ferroelectric polarization without affecting the lattice in the same manner as the Mn order.

We performed angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) of bulk2H-WSe$_2$ for different crystal orientations linked to each other bytime-reversal symmetry. We introduce a new observable called time-reversaldichroism, which quantifies the modulation of the photoemission intensity uponeffective time-reversal operation. We demonstrate that the hiddenorbital-texture of the crystal's electronic structure leaves its imprint ontothe time-reversal dichroism, due to multiple orbitals interference effects inphotoemission. Our experimental results are in quantitative agreement withstate-of-the-art fully relativistic calculations performed using the one-stepmodel of photoemission. While spin-resolved ARPES probes the spin component ofentangled spin-orbital texture in multiorbital systems, we demonstrate thattime-reversal dichroism is sensitive to its orbital-texture counterpart.

Antiferromagnets may hold potential as spintronic devices due to their robustness to external magnetic fields, if a suitable control method is realised. Here, a transient rotation of the global spin arrangement of GdRh(2)Si(2)is demonstrated via femtosecond optical excitation. A central prospect of antiferromagnetic spintronics is to exploit magnetic properties that are unavailable with ferromagnets. However, this poses the challenge of accessing such properties for readout and control. To this end, light-induced manipulation of the transient ground state, e.g. by changing the magnetic anisotropy potential, opens promising pathways towards ultrafast deterministic control of antiferromagnetism. Here, we use this approach to trigger a coherent rotation of the entire long-range antiferromagnetic spin arrangement about a crystalline axis in GdRh(2)Si(2)and demonstrate deterministic control of this rotation. Our observations can be explained by a laser-induced shift of the direction of the Gd spins' local magnetic anisotropy, and allow for a quantitative description of the transient magnetic anisotropy potential.

The electronic band structure and crystal structure are the two complementary identifiers of solid-state materials. Although convenient instruments and reconstruction algorithms have made large, empirical, crystal structure databases possible, extracting the quasiparticle dispersion (closely related to band structure) from photoemission band mapping data is currently limited by the available computational methods. To cope with the growing size and scale of photoemission data, here we develop a pipeline including probabilistic machine learning and the associated data processing, optimization and evaluation methods for band-structure reconstruction, leveraging theoretical calculations. The pipeline reconstructs all 14 valence bands of a semiconductor and shows excellent performance on benchmarks and other materials datasets. The reconstruction uncovers previously inaccessible momentum-space structural information on both global and local scales, while realizing a path towards integration with materials science databases. Our approach illustrates the potential of combining machine learning and domain knowledge for scalable feature extraction in multidimensional data.

Time-resolved x-ray diffraction experiments on the half-doped single-layered manganite $\mathrm{P}{\mathrm{r}}_{0.5}\mathrm{C}{\mathrm{a}}_{1.5}\mathrm{Mn}{\mathrm{O}}_{4}$ are used to monitor the ultrafast photoinduced dynamics of the structural distortion associated with the charge and orbital ordering (CO/OO). As in the nonlayered three-dimensional counterpart, the ordered phase melts in less than 100 fs after 800-nm photoexcitation and subsequently partially recovers due to thermal equilibration of electronic and vibrational systems. Photoexciting $\mathrm{P}{\mathrm{r}}_{0.5}\mathrm{C}{\mathrm{a}}_{1.5}\mathrm{Mn}{\mathrm{O}}_{4}$ below the transition temperature of a second structural phase transition that occurs around 146 K (deep inside the CO/OO phase) releases this structural transition, but progresses on a much slower timescale. This additional reduction of crystal symmetry, which we ascribe to a further tilt of the oxygen octahedra, can thus be considered to be only weakly coupled to CO/OO. Furthermore, static hard-x-ray and resonant soft-x-ray diffraction at the $\mathrm{Mn}\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}{L}_{2,3}$ edges experiments identify correlations between structural distortions and electronic order in thermal equilibrium.

Excitons, Coulomb-bound electron-hole pairs, are the fundamental excitations governing the optoelectronic properties of semiconductors. While optical signatures of excitons have been studied extensively, experimental access to the excitonic wave function itself has been elusive. Using multidimensional photoemission spectroscopy, we present a momentum-, energy- and time-resolved perspective on excitons in the layered semiconductor WSe2. By tuning the excitation wavelength, we determine the energy-momentum signature of bright exciton formation and its difference from conventional single-particle excited states. The multidimensional data allows to retrieve fundamental exciton properties like the binding energy and the exciton-lattice coupling and to reconstruct the real-space excitonic distribution function via Fourier transform. All quantities are in excellent agreement with microscopic calculations. Our approach provides a full characterization of the exciton properties and is applicable to bright and dark excitons in semiconducting materials, heterostructures and devices. Time-resolved soft-X-ray photoemission spectroscopy is used to simultaneously measure the ultrafast dynamics of core-level spectral functions and excited states upon excitation of excitons in WSe$_2$. We present a many-body approximation for the Green's function, which excellently describes the transient core-hole spectral function. The relative dynamics of excited-state signal and core levels reveals a delayed core-hole renormalization due to screening by excited quasi-free carriers, revealing an excitonic Mott transition. These findings establish time-resolved core-level photoelectron spectroscopy as a sensitive probe of subtle electronic many-body interactions and an ultrafast electronic phase transition., 6 pages, 4 figures

Image symmetrization is an effective strategy to correct symmetry distortion in experimental data for which symmetry is essential in the subsequent analysis. In the process, a coordinate transform, the symmetrization transform, is required to undo the distortion. The transform may be determined by image registration (i.e. alignment) with symmetry constraints imposed in the registration target and in the iterative parameter tuning, which we call symmetry-guided registration. An example use case of image symmetrization is found in electronic band structure mapping by multidimensional photoemission spectroscopy, which employs a 3D time-of-flight detector to measure electrons sorted into the momentum (kx, ky) and energy (E) coordinates. In reality, imperfect instrument design, sample geometry and experimental settings cause distortion of the photoelectron trajectories and, therefore, the symmetry in the measured band structure, which hinders the full understanding and use of the volumetric band mapping datasets. We demonstrate that symmetry-guided registration can correct the symmetry distortion in the momentum-resolved photoemission patterns. Using proposed symmetry metrics, we show quantitatively that the iterative approach to symmetrization outperforms its non-iterative counterpart in the restored symmetry of the outcome while preserving the average shape of the photoemission pattern. Our approach is generalizable to distortion corrections in different types of symmetries and should also find applications in other experimental methods that produce images with similar features.

We report on the ultrafast dynamics of charge order and structural response during the photoinduced suppression of charge and orbital order in a mixed-valence manganite. Employing femtosecond time-resolved resonant x-ray diffraction below and at the Mn $K$ absorption edge, we present a method to disentangle the transient charge order and structural dynamics in thin films of ${\mathrm{Pr}}_{0.5}{\mathrm{Ca}}_{0.5}{\mathrm{MnO}}_{3}$. Based on the static resonant scattering spectra, we extract the dispersion correction of charge-ordered ${\mathrm{Mn}}^{3+}$ and ${\mathrm{Mn}}^{4+}$ ions, allowing us to separate the transient contributions of purely charge order from structural contributions to the scattering amplitude after optical excitation. Our finding of a coherent structural mode at around $2.3\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}\mathrm{THz}$, which primarily modulates the lattice but does not strongly affect the charge order, supports the picture of the charge order being the driving force of the combined charge, orbital, and structural transition.

The original observation of the Einstein-de Haas effect was a landmark experiment in the early history of modern physics that illustrates the relationship between magnetism and angular momentum. Today the effect is still discussed in elementary physics courses to demonstrate that the angular momentum associated with the aligned electron spins in a ferromagnet can be converted to mechanical angular momentum by reversing the direction of magnetisation using an external magnetic field. In recent times, a related problem in magnetism concerns the time-scale over which this angular momentum transfer can occur. It is known experimentally for several metallic ferromagnets that intense photoexcitation leads to a drop in the magnetisation on a time scale shorter than 100 fs, a phenomenon called ultrafast demagnetisation. The microscopic mechanism for this process has been hotly debated, with one key question still unanswered: where does the angular momentum go on these sub-picosecond time scales? Here we show using femtosecond time-resolved x-ray diffraction that a large fraction of the angular momentum lost from the spin system on the laserinduced demagnetisation of ferromagnetic iron is transferred to the lattice on sub-picosecond timescales, manifesting as a transverse strain wave that propagates from the surface into the bulk. By fitting a simple model of the x-ray data to simulations and optical data, we roughly estimate that the angular momentum occurs on a time scale of 200 fs and corresponds to 80% of the angular momentum lost from the spin system. The high-${T}_{c}$ superconducting cuprates are recognized as doped Mott insulators. Several studies indicate that as a function of doping and temperature, there is a crossover from this regime into a phase characterized as a marginal Fermi liquid. Several calculations of the doped Mott insulating phase indicate that the Fermi surface defines small pockets which at the higher doping levels switch to a full closed Fermi surface, characteristic of a more metallic system. Here we use femtosecond laser-based pump-probe techniques to investigate the structure of the Fermi surface in the underdoped region of $\mathrm{B}{\mathrm{i}}_{2}\mathrm{S}{\mathrm{r}}_{2}\mathrm{CaC}{\mathrm{u}}_{2}{\mathrm{O}}_{8+\ensuremath{\delta}}$ and compare it with that associated with the optimally doped material. We confirm the concept of a small pocket in the underdoped system consistent with theoretical predictions in this strongly correlated state.

Femtosecond time-resolved x-ray diffraction is employed to study the dynamics of the periodic lattice distortion (PLD) associated with the charge-density-wave (CDW) in K0.3MoO3. Using a multi-pulse scheme we show the ability to extend the lifetime of coherent oscillations of the PLD about the undistorted structure through re-excitation of the electronic states. This suggests that it is possible to enter a regime where the symmetry of the potential energy landscape corresponds to the high symmetry phase but the scattering pathways that lead to the damping of coherent dynamics are still controllable by altering the electronic state population. Non-equilibrium conditions may lead to novel properties of materials with broken symmetry ground states not accessible in equilibrium as vividly demonstrated by non-linearly driven mid-infrared active phonon excitation. Potential energy surfaces of electronically excited states also allow to direct nuclear motion, but relaxation of the excess energy typically excites fluctuations leading to a reduced or even vanishing order parameter as characterized by an electronic energy gap. Here, using femtosecond time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we demonstrate a tendency towards transient stabilization of a charge density wave after near-infrared excitation, counteracting the suppression of order in the non-equilibrium state. Analysis of the dynamic electronic structure reveals a remaining energy gap in a highly excited transient state. Our observation can be explained by a competition between fluctuations in the electronically excited state, which tend to reduce order, and transiently enhanced Fermi surface nesting stabilizing the order., Whilst excited electronic states may exhibit unique non-equilibrium behavior, order is inhibited by fluctuations. Here, the authors use femtosecond photoemission spectroscopy to demonstrate transient stabilization of charge density wave order in rare earth tritellurides after near-infrared excitation.

Time-of-flight-based momentum microscopy has a growing presence in photoemission studies, as it enables parallel energy- and momentum-resolved acquisition of the full photoelectron distribution. Here, we report table-top extreme ultraviolet (XUV) time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (trARPES) featuring both a hemispherical analyzer and a momentum microscope within the same setup. We present a systematic comparison of the two detection schemes and quantify experimentally relevant parameters, including pump- and probe-induced space-charge effects, detection efficiency, photoelectron count rates, and depth of focus. We highlight the advantages and limitations of both instruments based on exemplary trARPES measurements of bulk WSe2. Our analysis demonstrates the complementary nature of the two spectrometers for time-resolved ARPES experiments. Their combination in a single experimental apparatus allows us to address a broad range of scientific questions with trARPES., Comment: 19 pages, 9 figures. Ultrafast non-equilibrium dynamics offer a route to study the microscopic interactions that govern macroscopic behavior. In particular, photo-induced phase transitions (PIPTs) in solids provide a test case for how forces, and the resulting atomic motion along a reaction coordinate, originate from a non-equilibrium population of excited electronic states. Utilizing femtosecond photoemission we obtain access to the transient electronic structure during an ultrafast PIPT in a model system: indium nanowires on a silicon(111) surface. We uncover a detailed reaction pathway, allowing a direct comparison with the dynamics predicted by ab initio simulations. This further reveals the crucial role played by localized photo-holes in shaping the potential energy landscape, and enables a combined momentum and real space description of PIPTs, including the ultrafast formation of chemical bonds., Main text and supplementary materials. The interplay between the electronic and lattice degrees of freedom in nonequilibrium states of strongly correlated systems has been debated for decades. Although progress has been made in establishing a hierarchy of electronic interactions with the use of time-resolved techniques, the role of the phonons often remains in dispute, a situation highlighting the need for tools that directly probe the lattice. We present the first combined megaelectron volt ultrafast electron diffraction and time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy study of optimally doped Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+δ. Quantitative analysis of the lattice and electron subsystems’ dynamics provides a unified picture of nonequilibrium electron-phonon interactions in the cuprates beyond the N-temperature model. The work provides new insights on the specific phonon branches involved in the nonequilibrium heat dissipation from the high-energy Cu–O bond stretching “hot” phonons to the lowest-energy acoustic phonons with correlated atomic motion along the crystal directions and their characteristic time scales. It reveals a highly nonthermal phonon population during the first several picoseconds after the photoexcitation. The approach, taking advantage of the distinct nature of electrons and photons as probes, is applicable for studying energy relaxation in other strongly correlated electron systems. We use femtosecond x-ray diffraction to study the structural response of charge and orbitally ordered ${\mathrm{Pr}}_{1\ensuremath{-}x}{\mathrm{Ca}}_{x}{\mathrm{MnO}}_{3}$ thin films across a phase transition induced by 800 nm laser pulses. By investigating the dynamics of both superlattice reflections and regular Bragg peaks, we disentangle the different structural contributions and analyze their relevant timescales. The dynamics of the structural and charge order response are qualitatively different when excited above and below a critical fluence ${f}_{c}$. For excitations below ${f}_{c}$ the charge order and the superlattice is only partially suppressed and the ground state recovers within a few tens of nanosecond via diffusive cooling. When exciting above the critical fluence the superlattice vanishes within approximately half a picosecond followed by a change of the unit cell parameters on a 10 picoseconds timescale. At this point all memory from the symmetry breaking is lost and the recovery time increases by many order of magnitudes due to the first order character of the structural phase transition.

We investigate the excited state electronic structure of the model phase transition system In/Si(111) using femtosecond time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (trARPES). An extreme ultraviolet 500 kHz laser source at 21.7 eV is utilized both to map the energy of excited states above the Fermi level and follow the momentum-resolved population dynamics on a femtosecond timescale. Excited-state band mapping is used to characterize the normally unoccupied electronic structure above the Fermi level in both structural phases of In/Si(111): the metallic (4 x 1) and the gapped (8 x 2) phases. The extracted band positions are compared withband- structure calculations utilizing density functional theory within both the local density approximation and GW approximations (single-particle Green's function (G) + screened Coulomb interaction (W)). While good overall agreement is found between the GW-calculated band structure and experiment, deviations in specific momentum regions may indicate the importance of excitonic effects not accounted for at this level of approximation. To probe the dynamics of these excited states, their momentum- resolved transient population dynamics are extracted with trARPES. The transient intensities are compared to a simulated spectral function modeled by a state population employing a transient elevated electronic temperature as determined experimentally. This allows the momentum-resolved population dynamics to be quantitatively reproduced, revealing important insights into the transfer of energy from the electronic system to the lattice. In particular, a comparison between the magnitude and relaxation time of the transient electronic temperature observed by trARPES with those of the lattice as probed in previous ultrafast electron diffraction studies implies a highly nonthermal phonon distribution at the surface following photo-excitation. This suggests that the energy from the initially excited electronic system is initially transferred to high-energy optical phonon modes followed by cooling and thermalization of the photo-excited system by much slower phonon-phonon coupling.

We use resonant and non-resonant X-ray diffraction measurements in combination with first-principles electronic structure calculations and Monte Carlo simulations to study the relationship between crystal structure and multiferroic orders in the orthorhombic perovskite manganites, o-$R$MnO$_3$ ($R$ is a rare-earth cation or Y). In particular, we focus on how the internal lattice parameters (Mn-O bond lengths and Mn-O-Mn bond angles) evolve under chemical pressure and epitaxial strain, and the effect of these structural variations on the microscopic exchange interactions and long-range magnetic order. We show that chemical pressure and epitaxial strain are accommodated differently by the crystal lattice of o-$R$MnO$_3$, which is key for understanding the difference in magnetic properties between bulk samples and strained films. Finally, we discuss the effects of these differences in the magnetism on the electric polarization in o-$R$MnO$_3$., Comment: 16 pages, 10 figures

The ultrafast dynamics of the octahedral rotation in $\mathrm{Ca}:\mathrm{SrTi}{\mathrm{O}}_{3}$ is studied by time-resolved x-ray diffraction after photoexcitation over the band gap. By monitoring the diffraction intensity of a superlattice reflection that is directly related to the structural order parameter of the soft-mode driven antiferrodistortive phase in $\mathrm{Ca}:\mathrm{SrTi}{\mathrm{O}}_{3}$, we observe an ultrafast relaxation on a 0.2 ps timescale of the rotation of the oxygen octahedron, which is found to be independent of the initial temperature despite large changes in the corresponding soft-mode frequency. A further, much smaller reduction on a slower picosecond timescale is attributed to thermal effects. Time-dependent density-functional-theory calculations show that the fast response can be ascribed to an ultrafast displacive modification of the soft-mode potential towards the normal state induced by holes created in the oxygen $2p$ states.

X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) and x-ray magnetic linear dichroism (XMLD) have been used to investigate the Fe magnetic response during the spin-reorientation transition (SRT) in $\mathrm{TmFe}{\mathrm{O}}_{3}$. Comparing the Fe XMLD results with neutron-diffraction and magnetization measurements on the same sample indicates that the SRT has an enhanced temperature range in the near surface region of approximately 82 to 120 K compared to approximately 82 to 92 K in bulk. This view is supported by complementary resonant soft x-ray-diffraction experiments at the Tm ${M}_{5}$ edge. These measurements find an induced magnetic moment on the Tm sites, which is well described by a dipolar mean-field model originating from the Fe moments. Even though such a model can describe the $4f$ response in the experiments, it is insufficient to describe the SRT even when considering a change in the $4f$ anisotropy. Moreover, the results of the Fe XMCD show a different temperature evolution through the SRT, the interpretation of which is hampered by additional spectral shape changes of the XCMD signal.

Both electron and lattice dynamics are directly observed in the nonequilibrium state of strongly correlated Bi-2212., The interplay between the electronic and lattice degrees of freedom in nonequilibrium states of strongly correlated systems has been debated for decades. Although progress has been made in establishing a hierarchy of electronic interactions with the use of time-resolved techniques, the role of the phonons often remains in dispute, a situation highlighting the need for tools that directly probe the lattice. We present the first combined megaelectron volt ultrafast electron diffraction and time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy study of optimally doped Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+δ. Quantitative analysis of the lattice and electron subsystems’ dynamics provides a unified picture of nonequilibrium electron-phonon interactions in the cuprates beyond the N-temperature model. The work provides new insights on the specific phonon branches involved in the nonequilibrium heat dissipation from the high-energy Cu–O bond stretching “hot” phonons to the lowest-energy acoustic phonons with correlated atomic motion along the crystal directions and their characteristic time scales. It reveals a highly nonthermal phonon population during the first several picoseconds after the photoexcitation. The approach, taking advantage of the distinct nature of electrons and photons as probes, is applicable for studying energy relaxation in other strongly correlated electron systems.

Using resonant soft x-ray techniques we follow the magnetic behavior of a strained epitaxial film of $\mathrm{CoC}{\mathrm{r}}_{2}{\mathrm{O}}_{4}$, a type-II multiferroic. The film is [110] oriented, such that both the ferroelectric and ferromagnetic moments can coexist in-plane. X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) is used in scattering and in transmission modes to probe the magnetization of Co and Cr separately. The transmission measurements utilized x-ray excited optical luminescence from the substrate. Resonant soft x-ray diffraction (RXD) was used to study the magnetic order of the low temperature phase. The XMCD signals of Co and Cr appear at the same ordering temperature ${T}_{C}\ensuremath{\approx}90\phantom{\rule{4pt}{0ex}}\mathrm{K}$, and are always opposite in sign. The coercive field of the Co and of Cr moments is the same, and is approximately two orders of magnitude higher than in bulk. Through sum rules analysis an enlarged $\mathrm{C}{\mathrm{o}}^{2+}$ orbital moment (${m}_{L}$) is found, which can explain this hardening. The RXD signal of the (q q 0) reflection appears below ${T}_{S}$, the same ordering temperature as the conical magnetic structure in bulk, indicating that this phase remains multiferroic under strain. To describe the azimuthal dependence of this reflection, a slight modification is required to the spin model proposed by the conventional Lyons-Kaplan-Dwight-Menyuk theory for magnetic spinels.

Chiral multiferroic langasites have attracted attention due to their doubly chiral magnetic ground state within an enantiomorphic crystal. We report on a detailed resonant soft x-ray diffraction study of the multiferroic ${\mathrm{Ba}}_{3}{\mathrm{TaFe}}_{3}{\mathrm{Si}}_{2}{\mathrm{O}}_{14}$ at the Fe ${L}_{2,3}$ and oxygen $K$ edges. Below ${T}_{N}$ ($\ensuremath{\approx}27K$) we observe the satellite reflections $(0,0,\ensuremath{\tau}), (0,0,2\ensuremath{\tau}), (0,0,3\ensuremath{\tau})$, and $(0,0,1\ensuremath{-}3\ensuremath{\tau})$ where $\ensuremath{\tau}\ensuremath{\approx}0.140\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.001$. The dependence of the scattering intensity on x-ray polarization and azimuthal angle indicate that the odd harmonics are dominated by the out-of-plane ($\stackrel{\ifmmode \hat{}\else \^{}\fi{}}{\mathbf{c}}$ axis) magnetic dipole while the $(0,0,2\ensuremath{\tau})$ originates from the electron density distortions accompanying magnetic order. We observe dissimilar energy dependencies of the diffraction intensity of the purely magnetic odd-harmonic satellites at the Fe ${L}_{3}$ edge. Utilizing first-principles calculations, we show that this is a consequence of the loss of threefold crystal symmetry in the multiferroic phase.

We investigate the demagnetization dynamics of the cycloidal and sinusoidal phases of multiferroic TbMnO3 by means of time-resolved resonant soft x-ray diffraction following excitation by an optical pump. The use of orthogonal linear x-ray polarizations provides information on the contribution from the different magnetic moment directions, which can be interpreted as signatures from multiferroic cycloidal spin order and sinusoidal spin order. Tracking these signatures in the time domain enables us to identify the transient magnetic phase created by intense photoexcitation of the electrons and subsequent heating of the spin system on a picosecond time scale. The transient phase is shown to exhibit mostly spin density wave character, as in the adiabatic case, while nevertheless retaining the wave vector of the cycloidal long-range order. Two different pump photon energies, 1.55 and 3.1 eV, lead to population of the conduction band predominantly via intersite d-d or intrasite p-d transitions, respectively. We find that the nature of the optical excitation does not play an important role in determining the dynamics of magnetic order melting. Further, we observe that the orbital reconstruction, which is induced by the spin ordering, disappears on a time scale comparable to that of the cycloidal order, attesting to a direct coupling between magnetic order and orbital reconstruction. Our observations are discussed in the context of recent theoretical models of demagnetization dynamics in strongly correlated systems, revealing the potential of this type of measurement as a benchmark for such theoretical studies.

We photoexcite SrTiO3 and EuTiO3 in their purely soft-mode-driven structurally distorted phase and trace the structural order parameter via ultra-short x-rays. We observe a rapid decay for SrTiO3 and an intriguing transient enhancement for EuTiO3.

In complex materials various interactions have important roles in determining electronic properties. Angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES) is used to study these processes by resolving the complex single-particle self-energy and quantifying how quantum interactions modify bare electronic states. However, ambiguities in the measurement of the real part of the self-energy and an intrinsic inability to disentangle various contributions to the imaginary part of the self-energy can leave the implications of such measurements open to debate. Here we employ a combined theoretical and experimental treatment of femtosecond time-resolved ARPES (tr-ARPES) show how population dynamics measured using tr-ARPES can be used to separate electron–boson interactions from electron–electron interactions. We demonstrate a quantitative analysis of a well-defined electron–boson interaction in the unoccupied spectrum of the cuprate Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+x characterized by an excited population decay time that maps directly to a discrete component of the equilibrium self-energy not readily isolated by static ARPES experiments., Differentiation of quantum interactions in correlated materials is ambiguous in measurements of the single particle self-energy. Here, Rameau et al. employ a combined theoretical and experimental time domain treatment to separate electron-boson interactions from electron-electron interactions in Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+x .

Using femtosecond time-resolved resonant magnetic x-ray diffraction at the Ho L3 absorption edge, we investigate the demagnetization dynamics in antiferromagnetically ordered metallic Ho after femtosecond optical excitation. Tuning the x-ray energy to the electric dipole (E1, 2p -> 5d) or quadrupole (E2, 2p -> 4f) transition allows us to selectively and independently study the spin dynamics of the itinerant 5d and localized 4f electronic subsystems via the suppression of the magnetic (2 1 3-tau ) satellite peak. We find demagnetization timescales very similar to ferromagnetic 4f systems, suggesting that the loss of magnetic order occurs via a similar spin-flip process in both cases. The simultaneous demagnetization of both subsystems demonstrates strong intra-atomic 4f-5d exchange coupling. In addition, an ultrafast lattice contraction due to the release of magnetostriction leads to a transient shift of the magnetic satellite peak.
