Objectives. We aimed to (1) evaluate the relation between home age and concentrations of multiple chemical contaminants in settled dust and (2) discuss the feasibility of using lead hazard controls to reduce children’s exposure to persistent organic pollutants. Methods. As part of the California Childhood Leukemia Study, from 2001 to 2007, we used a high-volume small surface sampler and household vacuum cleaners to collect dust samples from 583 homes and analyzed the samples for 94 chemicals with gas chromatography–mass spectrometry and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. We evaluated relations between chemical concentrations in dust and home age with Spearman rank correlation coefficients. Results. Dust concentrations of lead, polychlorinated biphenyls, organochlorine insecticides, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons were correlated with home age (q > 0.2; P < .001), whereas concentrations of pyrethroid insecticides and polybrominated diphenyl ethers were not. Conclusions. Dust in older homes contains higher levels of multiple, persistent chemicals than does dust in newer homes. In response to the bridge damages observed in past earthquakes and the absence of practical analysis methods, a simplified analysis procedure named the fault rupture-response spectrum analysis (FR-RSA) method was developed in this research as an alternative to the onerous nonlinear response history analysis (RHA) method for bridges crossing strike-slip earthquake fault rupture zones. For validation of the FR-RSA method, this research investigated seismic responses of two representative curved bridges in California, including one three-span bridge and one four-span bridge. The selected bridges were analyzed using both the FR-RSA method and the nonlinear RHA method. Ground motion, earthquake fault rupture location, and fault orientation were varied in the analyses to expand the validation work under a broad range of the parameters. Result comparisons show that the FR-RSA method provides estimates of peak bridge displacement response that are close enough to the exact nonlinear RHA results in all considered cases; therefore, it is recommended for future practical application. Abstract: Ground, airborne and spaceborne data were collected for a 450ha prescribed fire implemented on 18 October 2011 at the Henry W. Coe State Park in California. The integration of various data elements allowed near-coincident active fire retrievals to be estimated. The Autonomous Modular Sensor-Wildfire (AMS) airborne multispectral imaging system was used as a bridge between ground and spaceborne data sets providing high-quality reference information to support satellite fire retrieval error analyses and fire emissions estimates. We found excellent agreement between peak fire radiant heat flux data (<1% error) derived from near-coincident ground radiometers and AMS. Both MODIS and GOES imager active fire products were negatively influenced by the presence of thick smoke, which was misclassified as cloud by their algorithms, leading to the omission of fire pixels beneath the smoke, and resulting in the underestimation of their retrieved fire radiative power (FRP) values for the burn plot, compared to the reference airborne data. Agreement between airborne and spaceborne FRP data improved significantly after correction for omission errors and atmospheric attenuation, resulting in as low as 5% difference between Aqua/MODIS and AMS. Use of in situ fuel and fire energy estimates in combination with a collection of AMS, MODIS, and GOES FRP retrievals provided a fuel consumption factor of 0.261kgMJ−1, total energy release of 14.5e+06MJ, and total fuel consumption of 3.8e+06kg. Background: Metal content in lip products has been an issue of concern. Objectives: We measured lead and eight other metals in a convenience sample of 32 lip products used by young Asian women in Oakland, California, and assessed potential health risks related to estimated intakes of these metals. Methods: We analyzed lip products by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry and used previous estimates of lip product usage rates to determine daily oral intakes. We derived acceptable daily intakes (ADIs) based on information used to determine public health goals for exposure, and compared ADIs with estimated intakes to assess potential risks. Results: Most of the tested lip products contained high concentrations of titanium and aluminum. All examined products had detectable manganese. Lead was detected in 24 products (75%), with an average concentration of 0.36 ± 0.39 ppm, including one sample with 1.32 ppm. When used at the estimated average daily rate, estimated intakes were > 20% of ADIs derived for aluminum, cadmium, chromium, and manganese. In addition, average daily use of 10 products tested would result in chromium intake exceeding our estimated ADI for chromium. For high rates of product use (above the 95th percentile), the percentages of samples with estimated metal intakes exceeding ADIs were 3% for aluminum, 68% for chromium, and 22% for manganese. Estimated intakes of lead were < 20% of ADIs for average and high use. Conclusions: Cosmetics safety should be assessed not only by the presence of hazardous contents, but also by comparing estimated exposures with health-based standards. Abstract: Closed- and open-path methane gas analyzers are used in eddy covariance systems to compare three potential methane emitting ecosystems in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta (CA, USA): a rice field, a peatland pasture and a restored wetland. The study points out similarities and differences of the systems in field experiments and data processing. The closed-path system, despite a less intrusive placement with the sonic anemometer, required more care and power. In contrast, the open-path system appears more versatile for a remote and unattended experimental site. Overall, the two systems have comparable minimum detectable limits, but synchronization between wind speed and methane data, air density corrections and spectral losses have different impacts on the computed flux covariances. For the closed-path analyzer, air density effects are less important, but the synchronization and spectral losses may represent a problem when fluxes are small or when an undersized pump is used. For the open-path analyzer air density corrections are greater, due to spectroscopy effects and the classic Webb–Pearman–Leuning correction. Comparison between the 30-min fluxes reveals good agreement in terms of magnitudes between open-path and closed-path flux systems. However, the scatter is large, as consequence of the intensive data processing which both systems require. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: We describe measurements of fission product data at Los Alamos that are important for determining the number of fissions that have occurred when neutrons are incident on plutonium and uranium isotopes. The fission-spectrum measurements were made using a fission chamber designed by the National Institute for Standards and Technology (NIST) in the BIG TEN critical assembly, as part of the Inter-laboratory Liquid Metal Fast Breeder Reactor (LMFBR) Reaction Rate (ILRR) collaboration. The thermal measurements were made at Los Alamos'' Omega West Reactor. A related set of measurements were made of fission-product ratios (so-called R-values) in neutron environments provided by a number of Los Alamos critical assemblies that range from having average energies causing fission of 400–600 keV (BIG TEN and the outer regions of the Flattop-25 assembly) to higher energies (1.4–1.9 MeV) in the Jezebel, and in the central regions of the Flattop-25 and Flattop-Pu, critical assemblies. From these data we determine ratios of fission product yields in different fuel and neutron environments (Q-values) and fission product yields in fission spectrum neutron environments for 99Mo, 95Zr, 137Cs, 140Ba, 141,143Ce, and 147Nd. Modest incident-energy dependence exists for the 147Nd fission product yield; this is discussed in the context of models for fission that include thermal and dynamical effects. The fission product data agree with measurements by Maeck and other authors using mass-spectrometry methods, and with the ILRR collaboration results that used gamma spectroscopy for quantifying fission products. We note that the measurements also contradict earlier 1950s historical Los Alamos estimates by ∼5–7%, most likely owing to self-shielding corrections not made in the early thermal measurements. Our experimental results provide a confirmation of the England-Rider ENDF/B-VI evaluated fission-spectrum fission product yields that were carried over to the ENDF/B-VII.0 library, except for 99Mo where the present results are about 4%-relative higher for neutrons incident on 239Pu and 235U. Additionally, our results illustrate the importance of representing the incident energy dependence of fission product yields over the fast neutron energy range for high-accuracy work, for example the 147Nd from neutron reactions on plutonium. Laboratory stick-slip friction experiments indicate that peak slip rates increase with the stresses loading the fault to cause rupture. If this applies also to earthquake fault zones, then the analysis of rupture processes is simplified inasmuch as the slip rates depend only on the local yield stress and are independent of factors specific to a particular event, including the distribution of slip in space and time. We test this hypothesis by first using it to develop an expression for radiated energy that depends primarily on the seismic moment and the maximum slip rate. From laboratory results, the maximum slip rate for any crustal earthquake, as well as various stress parameters including the yield stress, can be determined based on its seismic moment and the maximum slip within its rupture zone. After finding that our new equation for radiated energy works well for laboratory stick-slip friction experiments, we used it to estimate radiated energies for five earthquakes with magnitudes near 2 that were induced in a deep gold mine, an M 2.1 repeating earthquake near the San Andreas Fault Observatory at Depth (SAFOD) site and seven major earthquakes in California and found good agreement with energies estimated independently from spectra of local and regional ground-motion data. Estimates of yield stress for the earthquakes in our study range from 12 MPa to 122 MPa with a median of 64 MPa. The lowest value was estimated for the 2004 M 6 Parkfield, California, earthquake whereas the nearby M 2.1 repeating earthquake, as recorded in the SAFOD pilot hole, showed a more typical yield stress of 64 MPa. We investigate temporal variations in teleseismic receiver functions using 11 yr of data at station PKD near Parkfield, California, by stacking power spectral density (PSD) functions within 12-month windows. We find that PSD levels for both radial and transverse components drop by ~5 dB following the 2003 San Simeon (M 6.5) earthquake, with a persistent reduction in background levels of ~2 dB, relative to the pre-2003 levels, after the 2004 Parkfield (M 6) earthquake, corresponding to an estimated decrease in shear-wave velocity of ~0.12 and ~0.06 km/sec, respectively, or equivalent negative changes in Poisson's ratio of ~0.02 and ~0.01. Our results suggest that the perturbation originates at middle to lower crustal levels, possibly caused by the redistribution of crustal pore fluids, consistent with increased and sustained tremor activity near Parkfield following both earthquakes. This study shows that we can resolve temporal variations in crustal scattering structure near a major seismogenic fault using the receiver function method. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The spectral content of ground displacement of the 10 largest last California earthquakes is studied. Specifically, the power spectral density function of the critical horizontal-component record of the closest-to-epicenter station is analyzed in each case. The results permit to-state that horizontal ground displacement is a narrow-band process. This fact was previously noticed while trying to solve the large-base-displacement problem in isolated structures and it was fundamental in the solution of this issue; however, these preliminary results were limited in number to enable a statement like the foregoing one. Abstract: The concentration and distribution of uranium (U) in sediment samples from three boreholes recovered near radioactive waste storage tanks at Hanford, Washington, USA, were determined in detail using bulk and micro-analytical techniques. The source of contamination was a plume that contained an estimated 7000kg of dissolved U that seeped into the subsurface as a result of an accident that occurred during filling of tank BX-102. The desorption character and kinetics of U were also determined by experiment in order to assess the mobility of U in the vadose zone. Most samples contained too little moisture to obtain quantitative information on pore water compositions. Concentrations of U (and contaminant phosphate—P) in pore waters were therefore estimated by performing 1:1 sediment-to-water extractions and the data indicated concentrations of these elements were above that of uncontaminated “background” sediments. Further extraction of U by 8N nitric acid indicated that a significant fraction of the total U is relatively immobile and may be sequestered in mobilization-resistant phases. Fine- and coarse-grained samples in sharp contact with one another were sub-sampled for further scrutiny and identification of U reservoirs. Segregation of the samples into their constituent size fractions coupled with microwave-assisted digestion of bulk samples showed that most of the U contamination was sequestered within the fine-grained fraction. Isotope exchange (233U) tests revealed that ∼51% to 63% of the U is labile, indicating that the remaining fund of U is locked up in mobilization-resistant phases. Analysis by Micro-X-ray Fluorescence and Micro-X-ray Absorption Near-Edge Spectroscopy (μ-XRF and μ-XANES) showed that U is primarily associated with Ca and is predominately U(VI). The spectra obtained on U-enriched “hot spots” using Time-Resolved Laser-Induced Fluorescence Spectroscopy (TRLIFS) provide strong evidence for uranophane-type [Ca(UO2)2(SiO3OH)2(H2O)5] and uranyl phosphate [Ca(UO2)2(PO4)2(H2O)10–12] phases. These data show that disseminated micro-precipitates can form in narrow pore spaces within the finer-grained matrix and that these objects are likely not restricted to lithic fragment environments. Uranium mobility may therefore be curtailed by precipitation of uranyl silicate and phosphate phases, with additional possible influence exerted by capillary barriers. Consequently, equilibrium-based desorption models that predict the concentrations and mobility of U in the subsurface matrix at Hanford are unnecessarily conservative. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The varved sedimentary AD 1917-2004 record from the depositional center of the Santa Barbara Basin (SBB, California) was analyzed with monthly to triannual resolution to yield relative abundances of six coccolithophore species representing at least 96% of the coccolithophore assemblage. Seasonal/annual relative abundances respond to climatic and surface hydrographic conditions in the SBB, whereby (i) the three species G. oceanica, H. carteri and F. profunda are characteristic of the strength of the northward flowing warm California Counter Current, (ii) the two species G. ericsonii and G. muellerae are associated with the cold equatorward flowing California Current, (iii) and E. huxleyi appears to be endemic to the SBB. Spectral analyses on relative abundances of these species show that all are influenced by the El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and/or by the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO). Increased relative abundances of G. oceanica and H. carteri are associated with warm ENSO events, G. muellerae responds to warm PDO events and the abundance of G. ericsonii increases during cold PDO events. Morphometric parameters measured on E. huxleyi, G. muellerae and G. oceanica indicate increasing coccolithophore shell carbonate mass from ∼ 1917 until 2004 concomitant with rising pCO2 and sea surface temperature in the region of the SBB. Isotope ratio measurements by multicollector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry are affected by mass bias, the mass-dependent sensitivity of the isotopes. This study evaluates the variation of mass bias on different instrumental parameters such as the carrier gas flow rate, the sampling depth in the plasma as well as the ion optic settings. Differences and similarities are shown between the isotope ratio variation profiles for liquid sample introduction by solution nebulization only and for membrane desolvation. They are assigned to the different behaviour of their resulting aerosols in the plasma. A promising approach towards stabilization of mass bias by measuring at elevated carrier gas flow rates is shown. Operation at 60% sensitivity reduced the bias on 146Nd/144Nd introduced by a matrix of 10 µg/g Ho up to six times compared to the highest sensitivity conditions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To support remote sensing of carbon dioxide in the troposphere, H2O pressure-broadened half-widths were obtained for 182 lines of CO2 in the 2250–2390 cm–1 region. For this, six spectra of CO2 were recorded at 0.003 89 cm–1 resolution using a Bruker IFS-125HR at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. The absorption cell length was 6.14 cm, and the water pressures ranged from 20.1 to 26.5 torr (1 torr = 133.322 4 Pa) near room temperatures. Partial pressures of the species in the mixtures were determined by measuring selected line intensities in the v3 band of CO2 and the v2 band of H2O. Sample temperatures were validated by deriving rotational temperature from the v3 and v2 + v3 – v2 intensities of 12CO2 and those of CO (1–0). Positions, intensities, and half-widths were retrieved spectrum by spectrum using a nonlinear least-squares line-fitting algorithm, employing a standard Voigt line shape profile and an instrumental line shape consisting of a sinc function with aperture correction. Half-widths obtained for both the fundamental and the hot band of 12CO2 and the fundamental v3 band of 13CO2 had similar values. While half-widths of CO2 broadened by other atmospheric gases (such as N2, O2, CO2, and air) tend to decrease with increasing rotational quantum number J″, the H2O-broadened half-widths were observed to increase for intermediate J′′ (8 ≤ J′′ ≤ 42): ~0.127 cm–1 atm–1 near J′′ = 8, and increasing to ~0.143 cm–1 atm–1 (1 atm = 101.325 kPa) towards J″ = 42. Moreover, for 10 ≤ J″ ≤ 40, the empirical widths were within ~2%-3% of theoretical calculations. Since water vapor could reach up to 5% of ambient atmospheric surface pressure in the tropical regions, water broadened half-widths are required to model tropospheric CO2, particularly for high-precision remote sensing, to achieve a sub-percent precision in the measurements of CO2 column averaged mixing ratio. Rooted in structural dynamics theory, two approximate procedures for estimating peak responses of linearly elastic “ordinary” bridges crossing fault-rupture zones are presented: response spectrum analysis (RSA) procedure and a linear static analysis procedure. These procedures estimate the peak response by superposing peak values of quasi-static and dynamic responses. The peak quasi-static response in both procedures is computed by static analysis of the bridge with peak values of all support displacements applied simultaneously. In RSA, the peak dynamic response is estimated by dynamic analysis including all significant modes, which is simplified in the latter procedure to static analysis of the bridge for appropriately selected forces; usually only one mode—the most dominant mode—is sufficient in the RSA procedure. Appearing in these procedures is the “effective” influence vector that differs from the influence vector for spatially uniform excitation, and the response spectrum used in the RSA procedure differs from the standard California Department of Transportation (CALTRANS) spectrum. Both of these simplified procedures provide estimates of peak response that are close enough to results of the “exact” response history analysis to be useful for practical application. Earth's arid and semiarid ecosystems are subject to novel combinations of disruptive factors and unprecedented rates of change. Biotic soil crust is believed to be sensitive to impacts caused by land use and climate changes. This study examined the potential for spectral detection of different biological soil crusts (BSC: cyanobacteria, moss and lichen) and bare soil components at a long-term manipulative experiment at the Mojave Global Change Facility (MGCF) in southwestern Nevada. We evaluated the potential for spectral detection of experimental treatments using laboratory and field measured reflectance spectra in the second and third year of the experiment, and airborne hyperspectral data obtained in the third year of the manipulations for soil disturbance, increased summer rainfall, and dry nitrogen deposition. Laboratory spectra of individual components of biological soil crust and bare soil measured under controlled laboratory conditions were spectrally different over much of the spectrum and exhibited features at 0.42, 0.50, and 0.68 μm, which could differentiate these materials. Field measured spectra were more similar in overall shape in each of the MGCF treatments and individual BSC could not be distinguished. The field spectra most closely resemble cyanobacteria from laboratory measurements, which are known to cover up to 60% of the inter-shrub spaces. There were significant treatment differences between control, soil disturbance, and irrigation treatments in field spectral measurements and a spectral feature in the 2.00–2.08 μm region could distinguish these treatments. The treatments were also apparent in high spatial resolution (~4 m ground IFOV) airborne hyperspectral imagery using a minimum noise fraction (MNF) analysis, although treatments were not distinct in terms of laboratory or field-based specific features. Abstract: Tarzana station is located in the foothills of the Santa Monica Mountains in California near the crest of a low (<20m) natural hill with gentle slopes. The hill is about 500m in length by 130m in width and is formed of extremely weathered shale at the surface to fresh at depth. Average S-wave is about 250m/s in the top 17–18m, and S- and P-wave velocities significantly increase below this depth. According to the NEHRP classification based on V S30∼300m/s it is a site class D. Strong-motion instrumentation at Tarzana consisted of an accelerograph at the top of the hill, a downhole instrument at 60m depth, and an accelerograph at the base of the hill. More than 20 earthquakes were recorded by at least three instruments at Tarzana from 1998 till 2003. Comparisons of recordings and Fourier spectra indicate strong directional resonance in a direction perpendicular to the strike of the hill. The dominant peaks in ground motion amplification on the top of the hill relative to the base are at frequencies ∼3.6 and 8–9Hz for the horizontal components. Our hypothesis is that the hill acts like a wave trap. This results in an amplification at predominant frequencies f=V/4h (h is layer''s thickness) at f∼3.6Hz for S-waves (using average V S17=246m/s and h=17m) and f∼7.9Hz for P-waves (using average V P17=535m/s and h=17m). As was shown by Bouchon and Barker [Seismic response of a hill: the example of Tarzana, California. Bull Seism Soc Am 1996;86(1A):66–72], topography of this hill amplifies and polarizes ground motion in the frequency range of 3–5Hz. Hill acts as a magnifying polarizing glass: It polarizes ground motion in the direction perpendicular to the strike of the hill and also amplifies ground motions that had been also amplified by a low-velocity layer. Infrasound arrays typically consist of several microbarometers separated by distances that provide predictable signal time separations, forming the basis for processing techniques that estimate the phase velocity direction. The directional resolution depends on the noise level and is proportional to the number of these point sensors; additional sensors help attenuate noise and improve direction resolution. An alternative approach is to form an array of directional line sensors, each of which emulates a line of many microphones that instantaneously integrate pressure change. The instrument response is a function of the orientation of the line with respect to the signal wavefront. Real data recorded at the Piñon Flat Observatory in southern California and synthetic data show that this spectral property can be exploited with multiple line sensors to determine the phase velocity direction with a precision comparable to a larger aperture array of microbarometers. Three types of instrument-response-dependent beamforming and an array deconvolution technique are evaluated. The results imply that an array of five radial line sensors, with equal azimuthal separation and an aperture that depends on the frequency band of interest, provides directional resolution while requiring less space compared to an equally effective array of five microbarometers with rosette wind filters. The article presents a study on the environmental occurrence and shallow ground water detection of the antibiotic monensin from dairy farms in California. For the study, samples of flush lanes, lagoon waters, and shallow ground water were collected and monensin concentrations were identified through solid-phase extraction and liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry with positive electrospray ionization. Research suggests the possibility of monensin transport into shallow alluvial ground water from dairy management units.

In the autumn of 1986, the first electron beam ion trap, EBIT, was put into service as a light source for the spectroscopy of highly charged ions. On the occasion of the twentieth anniversary of EBIT, we review its early uses for spectroscopy, from the first measurements of X-rays from L-shell xenon ions in 1986 to its conversion to SuperEBIT in 1992 and rebirth as EBIT-I in 2001. Abstract: Analysis of absorbed organic molecules in groundstone could provide a valuable means to study resource use and processing in antiquity. The following study analyzed extracts from the surfaces of several central California milling tools to assess whether organic residues remained from prehistoric resource processing. It also sought to determine which source identification methods are likely to be successful at providing information about the type, or even the specific identify, of resources that were processed. Lipids (primarily fatty acids) were analyzed using GC–MS and the presence of phenolic compounds was assessed with UV-Vis spectroscopy. Milling surfaces were compared to previously broken surfaces from the same tool with the assumption that both surfaces had been exposed to similar post-depositional conditions. Results supported the presence of ancient residues in milling tools. A higher concentration of fatty acids was recovered from milling surfaces than paired broken surfaces. Furthermore, measurable amounts of azelaic acid (an oxidation product of some unsaturated fatty acids) were present in most milling surfaces, but not in broken surfaces. However, results also indicated that environmentally absorbed lipids formed a significant portion of the total lipid content. Thus, it is suggested that future analyses employ a biomarker approach, rather than criteria based on ratios of common fatty acids, to identify sources of organic residues in prehistoric milling tools. Spectral similarity metrics have previously been used to select representative spectra from a class for use in spectral mixture modeling. Since the tasks of spectral selection for spectral mixture modeling and spectral selection for temporal compositing are similar, these metrics may have utility for temporal compositing. This paper explores the use of two spectral similarity metrics, endmember average root mean square error (EAR) and minimum average spectral angle (MASA), for constructing temporal composites. EAR and MASA compositing algorithms were compared against four previously used algorithms, including maximum NDVI, minimum view zenith angle, minimum blue, and median red. A total of 10 different algorithms were used to create 16-day composites of Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) surface reflectance data over a 6-year period. Algorithm performance was assessed based on short-term temporal variability in spectral reflectance and in a selection of indices, both within a southwestern California study area and within five land-cover class subsets. EAR compositing produced the lowest variability for 4 out of 7 MODIS bands, as measured by the root mean square of time series residuals. MASA or EAR compositing produced the lowest root mean square residual values for all of the tested indices. To assess how compositing algorithms might affect remote sensing correlations with biophysical variables, correlations between indices calculated from different composites and live fuel moisture were compared. Exotic plant invasion is a major environmental and ecological concern and is a particular issue for Mediterranean-type ecosystems. Early detection of invasive plants is crucial for effective weed management. Several studies have explored hyperspectral imagery for mapping invasive plants with promising results. However, only a few extensive or comparative studies about image processing techniques for invasive plant detection have been reported, and even fewer studies have involved very high spatial and spectral resolution imagery. The primary goal of this study was to investigate the utility of very high spatial (0.5 m) and spectral (4 nm) resolution imagery and several classification approaches for detecting tamarisk (Tamarix spp.) infestations, the most problematic invasive plant species in the riparian habitats of southern California. Hierarchical clustering was a particularly effective and efficient statistical method for identifying wavebands and spectral transforms having the greatest discriminatory power. Products resulting from the classification of airborne hyperspectral image data varied by scene, input data type, classifier, and minimum patch size. Overall accuracy of image classification accuracy of products co-varied with commission error rates, such that products having strong agreement with reference data also had a high number of false detections. Integrating the findings from qualitative map analysis, areal proportion statistics, and object-based accuracy assessment indicates that the parallelepiped classifier with several narrow wavebands selected through hierarchical clustering yielded the most accurate and reliable tamarisk classification products. California dairies house approximately 1.8 million lactating and 1.5 million dry cows and heifers. State air regulatory agencies view these dairies as a major air pollutant source, but emissions data are sparse, particularly for volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The objective of this work was to determine V0C emissions from lactating and dry dairy cows and their waste using an environmental chamber. Carbon dioxide and methane were measured to provide context for the V0Cs. VOCs were measured by proton-transfer-reaction mass spectrometry (PTR-MS). The compounds with highest fluxes when cows plus waste were present were methanol, acetone + propanal, dimethylsulfide, and m/z 109 (likely 4-methyl-phenol). The compounds with highest fluxes from fresh waste (urine and feces) were methanol, m/z 109, and m/z 60 (likely trimethylamine). Ethanol fluxes are reported qualitatively, and several VOCs that were likely emitted (formaldehyde, methylamine, dimethylamine) were not detectable by PTR-MS. The sum of reactive VOC fluxes measured when cows were present was a factor of 6–10 less than estimates historically used for regulatory purposes. In addition, ozone formation potentials of the dominant VOCs were ∼10% those of typical combustion or biogenic VOCs. Abstract: The work is focused on the neutronic calculation of the nuclear parameters (distribution of neutron fluency, atomic displacement, nuclear heating, gas production, photon production, nuclear reactions and induced activity) in a specimen of the cooper alloy (CuCrZr) using Monte Carlo Neutron-Particle Transport code MCNP-4C2. This alloy is currently one of the best candidate materials for the first wall of the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) which will be exposed to high neutron load with energy of about 14.1MeV. The MCNP model of the investigated specimen (12×12×0.5mm) consists of 98.683% Cu, 0.754% Cr, 0.163% Zr and 0.4% Cs. The number of primary knock-out atoms calculated for this alloy specimen is 8.253E−02 atoms/(source neutroncm3). The calculated helium production is 2.857E−03 atoms/(source neutroncm3), and the hydrogen production is 1.387E−02 atoms/(source neutroncm3). Activity of the specimen by copper activation is of about 5MBq. The TRIM 98.01 code has been used for the simulation of defects creation in copper by hydrogen H+ of 95keV energy, only. The defects production has been identified in the region of about 400–800nm. Results obtained by Monte Carlo calculations will be used for understanding of the experimental data from positron annihilation spectroscopy measurements which are scheduled for next year. Abstract: Nonlinear aspects of sea surface temperature (SST) in Monterey Bay are examined, based on an 85-year record of daily observations from Pacific Grove, California. Oceanic processes that affect the waters of Monterey Bay are described, processes that could contribute to nonlinearity in the record. Exploratory data analysis reveals that the record at Pacific Grove is non-Gaussian and, most likely, nonstationary. A more recent test for stationarity based on a power law approximation to the slope of the power spectrum indicates that the record is stationary for frequencies up to ∼8 cycles per year (∼45 days), but nonstationary at higher frequencies. To examine the record at Pacific Grove for nonlinear behavior, third-order statistics, including the skewness, statistical measures of asymmetry, the bicorrelation, and the bispectrum, were employed. The bicorrelation revealed maxima located approximately 365 days apart, reflecting a nonlinear contribution to the annual cycle. Based on a 365-day moving window, the running skewness is positive almost 80% of the time, reflecting the overall impact of warming influences. The asymmetry is positive approximately 75% of the time, consistent with the asymmetric shape of the mean annual cycle. Based on the skewness and asymmetry, nonlinearities in the record, when they occur, appear to be event-driven with time scales possibly as short as several days, to several years. In many cases, these events are related to warm water intrusions into the bay, and El Niño warming episodes. The power spectrum indicates that the annual cycle is a dominant source of variability in the record and that there is a relatively strong semiannual component as well. To determine whether or not the annual and semiannual cycles are harmonically related, the bispectrum and bicoherence were calculated. The bispectrum is nonzero, providing a strong indication of nonlinearity in the record. The bicoherence indicates that the annual cycle is a major source of nonlinearity and further implies that the annual and semiannual cycles are harmonically related. Based on the wavelet power spectrum (WPS), the appearance of the semiannual cycle is transitory; however, pathways between the annual and semiannual cycles appear at certain times when nonlinear interaction between them could occur. Comparisons between the WPS and the running skewness suggest that there is a tendency for periods when pathways exist, to coincide with increased positive skewness, and, often, with El Niño warming episodes. The Hilbert–Huang transform, a relatively new tool for nonstationary and nonlinear spectral analysis, was used to further examine the origin of the semiannual cycle. The time-dependent Hilbert spectrum reveals large and erratic variations in frequency associated with semiannual cycle but far greater stability associated with the annual cycle. As a result, the time-integrated Hilbert spectrum does not indicate the presence of a semiannual cycle. The method of surrogates from the field of nonlinear dynamics was also employed to test the Hopkins record for nonlinearity. Differences between the data and the surrogates were found that were statistically significant, implying the existence of nonlinearity in the record. Using the method of surrogates together with a one-year moving window, El Niño warming episodes appear to be a likely source of nonlinearity, consistent with the other analyses that were performed. Finally, the influence of stochastic variability due to serial correlation in the data was examined by comparing standardized statistics for the observations and for simulations based on an autoregressive model whose properties were obtained from the observations. The magnitude of the variability for the simulations was found to be far less than that associated with the original data, and thus stochastic variability does not appear to be a factor that significantly affects the interpretation of our results. Sustainable management of wetland ecosystems requires monitoring of vegetation dynamics, which can be achieved through remote sensing. This paper assesses the use of hyperspectral imagery to study the structure of wetlands of San Francisco Bay, California, USA. Spectral mixture analysis (SMA) and multiple endmember spectral mixture analysis (MESMA) were applied on an AVIRIS (Airborne Visible and Infrared Imaging Spectrometer) image to investigate their appropriateness to characterize marshes, with emphasis on the Spartina species complex. The role of rms. error as a measure of model adequacy and different methods for image endmember extraction were also evaluated. Results indicate that both SMA and MESMA are suitable for mapping the main components of the marsh, although MESMA seems more appropriate since it can incorporate more than one endmember per class. rms. error was shown not to be a measure of SMA model adequacy, but it can be used to help to assess model adequacy within groups of related models. To provide design guidance on the influence of soil softening on ground response, we analyzed ground motions recorded at five instrumented liquefaction sites, including the Wildlife Liquefaction Array, Calif.; the Port Island Downhole Array, Japan, the Treasure Island and Alameda Naval Air Station sites, Calif., and the Kawagiahi-cho apartment buildings, Niigata, Japan. Conclusions from these analyses are (1) where soil softening occurs early in a strong ground motion sequence, soil softening leads to reduced short period (T<1.0 s) spectral accelerations compared to those that would have developed in the absence of softening; (2) where soil softening occurs late in a ground motion sequence, soil softening has little influence on short-period (T<1.0 s) spectral response; (3) soil softening and liquefaction may lead to amplification of long period (T>1.0 s) spectral accelerations, particularly if ground oscillation develops. Comparison of actual spectra calculated from motions measured at liquefaction sites with design spectra incorporated in seismic provisions of the 1998 AASHTO LRFD Bridge Code, the 1997 Uniform Building Code, and the 2003 International Building Code indicate that code spectra conservatively envelope measured motions from liquefied sites for short-period (T<1.0 s) structures. For longer period structures, the design spectra are generally conservative if softer site profile types are assigned, but may be unconservative for stiffer site types. Abstract: Daily observations of sea-surface temperature (SST) have been acquired at the southern end of Monterey Bay in Pacific Grove, California since 1919. It is one of the longest oceanographic records off the west coast of North America. The record is examined to determine the major sources of variability in Monterey Bay and beyond, on time scales from seasonal to interdecadal. On seasonal time scales, the spring transition to coastal upwelling, often a major event along the coast of central California, is not well-expressed inside the bay but is detectable, occurring, on average, between mid-March and mid-April. The onset of the Davidson Current in Monterey Bay is well-defined, occurring, on average, in mid-October, ±2–3 weeks. Intraseasonal changes also occur during the spring and summer that may correspond to intrusions of warmer offshore waters into Monterey Bay. Intraseasonal oscillations with periods in the range of 40–50 days occur in Monterey Bay, but compared to their signature along the open coast, their event-like behavior is modified. The annual cycle of surface temperature in Monterey Bay is asymmetric with seasonal warming occurring during the spring and summer, and cooling during the fall. This asymmetry is primarily due to the net surface heat exchange which is positive for most of the year, and, to a lesser extent, the influence cold upwelled waters that are advected into the bay during the spring and summer, observations supported by a simple model that combines both the net surface heat exchange and thermal advection. On interannual time scales, the influence of El Niño warming events is strong. A comparison with the Northern Oscillation Index (NOI) using Singular Spectrum Analysis (SSA), shows that the El Niño signal is often as strong in SST at Pacific Grove as it is in the NOI. On interdecadal time scales, the influence of the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) is also relatively strong in Monterey Bay, again based on SSA. The integrated anomaly was calculated from the record and reveals regime shifts in Monterey Bay that occurred in 1929, an event that was apparently regional in scale, reflecting a transition from unusually cold to warmer conditions, and the regime change in the PDO that occurred in 1976. Each regime change can be approximated by a step-wise increase in temperature. Finally, linear trends were estimated for the entire record (∼+0.01°C/year), and for the 72-year period from 1930 to 2001 (+0.0042°C/year), i.e., following the regional regime change in 1929. The estimated trend for the last 72 years is not statistically significant; however, it is in close agreement with the long-term trend for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) record of global surface temperature that spans almost 140 years (∼+0.005°C/year). Although the long-term increase in SST at Pacific Grove appears to be consistent with global warming, the integrated anomaly suggests that temperature increases in Monterey Bay have occurred rather abruptly and thus it becomes more difficult to invoke the global warming scenario. Finally, based on the monthly averaged data, the annual cycle, El Niño warming episodes, the PDO, the long-term trend, and the semiannual cycle account for approximately 44%, 18%, 6%, 4%, and 3% of the total variance, respectively, in SST at Pacific Grove. Abstract: Concurrent video images of sand ripples and current meter measurements of directional wave spectra are analyzed to study the relations between waves and wave-generated sand ripples. The data were collected on the inner shelf off Huntington Beach, California, at 15m water depth, where the sea floor is comprised of well-sorted very fine sands (D 50=92μm), during the winter of 2002. The wave climate, which was controlled by southerly swells (12–18s period) and westerly wind waves (5–10s period), included three wave types: (A) uni-modal, swells only; (B) bi-modal, swells dominant; and (C) bi-modal, wind-wave dominant. Each wave type has distinct relations with the plan-view shapes of ripples that are classified into five types: (1) sharp-crested, two-dimensional (2-D) ripples; (2) sharp-crested, brick-pattern, 3-D ripples; (3) bifurcated, 3-D ripples; (4) round-crested, shallow, 3-D ripples; and (5) flat bed. The ripple spacing is very small and varies between 4.5 and 7.5cm. These ripples are anorbital as ripples in many field studies. Ripple orientation is only correlated with wave directions during strong storms (wave type C). In a poly-modal, multi-directional spectral wave environment, the use of the peak parameters (frequency, direction), a common practice when spectral wave measurements are unavailable, may lead to significant errors in boundary layer and sediment transport calculations. Recent research clearly shows the importance of including the vertical component of earthquake ground motion in seismic analysis and design. In addition, pioneering studies [e.g., Elnashai and Papazoglou (1997)] have explored and documented the characteristics of available near-field vertical ground motion records. As a follow-up, this paper complements earlier studies, and investigates additional far-field records and available downhole array vertical motion records. A total of 111 free-field strong motion records (from California) and available downhole array records are employed. Compared to near-field records, far-field records generally contain more energy at longer periods. Based on the available data, response spectra are presented for near-field and far-field records respectively. The currently scarce downhole-array vertical motion records show that significant amplification may occur within the top 10–20 m soil layers. A simple one-dimensional (1D) vertical wave propagation model did not appear adequate for modelling the observed downhole array response. In using such a simplified model, very high viscous damping in the range of 15–25% was needed to match the recorded downhole vertical response, even for small tremors. Two collaborative studies have been conducted by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) National Exposure Research Laboratory (NERL) and National Health and Environmental Effects Research Laboratory to determine personal exposures and physiological responses to particulate matter (PM) of elderly persons living in a retirement facility in Fresno, CA. Measurements of PM and other criteria air pollutants were made inside selected individual residences within the retirement facility and at a central outdoor site on the premises. In addition, personal PM exposure monitoring was conducted for a subset of the participants, and ambient PM monitoring data were available for comparison from the NERL PM research monitoring platform in central Fresno. Both a winter (February 1-28, 1999) and a spring (April 19-May 16, 1999) study were completed so that seasonal effects could be evaluated. During the spring study, a more robust personal exposure component was added, as well as a more detailed evaluation of physical factors, such as air-exchange rate, that are known to influence the penetration of particles into the indoor environment. In this paper, comparisons are made among measured personal PM exposures and PM mass concentrations measured at the NERL Fresno Platform site, outside on the premises of the retirement facility, and inside selected residential apartments at the facility during the two 28-day study periods. The arithmetic daily mean personal PM[sub2.5] exposure during the winter study period was 13.3 µg/m³, compared with 9.7, 20.5, and 21.7 µg/m³ for daily mean overall apartment, outdoor, and ambient (i.e., platform) concentrations, respectively. The daily mean personal PM[sub2.5] exposure during the spring study period was 11.1 µg/m³, compared with 8.0, 10.1, and 8.6 µg/m³ for the daily mean apartment, outdoor, and ambient concentrations, respectively. Digitonin extracts from retinas of the marine fish Porichthys notatus, from California and Puget Sound (USA), contain a single photopigment with maximum absorbance at 498 nm. In the presence of hydroxylamine the final product of bleaching absorbs maximally at 367 nm, indicating that the photopigment is based on retinal. Spectral sensitivity measurements performed on intact eyes and eye-cup preparations in darkadapted and selectively light-adapted states yield curves which suggest that the retina of P. notatus contains at least 3 different types of receptors. In the darkadapted state, the spectral sensitivity curve has a broad peak, with a maximum between 480 and 500 nm. In the blue and red light-adapted states, in addition to depressing the sensitivity, the shape of the sensitivity curve also changes. Under these conditions new peaks appear which suggest the presence of at least two different types of cones, with sensitivity maxima in the blue and the green regions of the spectrum, respectively. Comparison of the spectral sensitivity curves with the in vivo bioluminescence emission spectrum of the fish gives an especially good correspondence and suggests that the fish is able to perceive the bioluminescence of its own species. The article profiles Edward I. Solomon, a chemistry professor at Stanford University in Palo Alto, California. In his junior year of high school, Solomon became involved in a program which allowed exceptional students to work with university professors all over the U.S. He has studied metalloenzymes for over thirty years, using theoretical calculations and spectroscopy to visualize the mechanics of such enzymes. Solomon was elected to the organization National Academy of Sciences in 2005.

This work explores the use of Raman micro-spectroscopy to determine sources of airborne particulate matter collected on PM 2.5 air filters in Imperial Valley, California. The goal is to examine if nearby soil is a potential source of particles sampled on air filters deployed in an urbanized desert area during events of unusually high PM 2.5 excursions. Particle specific composition information can be an indicator of potential origin. This can provide insights into the source of unexpectedly high proportion of large particles sampled on PM 2.5 filters in the vicinity of Imperial Valley. The measured spectral correspondence between the filter and soil particles, in the size range of 2.5-10 μm, is consistent with windblown dust being a likely source of the larger (>2.5 μm) particles collected on the PM 2.5 filters. Additionally, these particles were identified as components of commonly occurring crustal minerals in the vicinity of the sampling site, such as iron oxides, hydroxides, sulfides, titanium dioxides and aluminosilicates. A substantial portion of the analyzed filter particles displayed a strong broadband fluorescence signal, which is consistent with the presence of organic matter and has been recognized as a marker for soil related origin of the filter particles. Elemental carbon (soot) was found to be prevalent among the particles as well, suggesting the existence of combustion related sources. Comparison between a heavily loaded filter sample and a filter with a more typical, lower loading did not show any obvious difference in chemical compositions. In both cases the particles appeared to be of crustal origin with the prevalence of elemental carbon. The primary difference between these two filter samples appear to be their particle size distribution - the heavily loaded filter sample contained greater proportion of large particles (>2.5 μm), and was more consistent with spectral signature of soils analyzed from the region., (Published by Elsevier Ltd.)

The problem of transformation of the directional spectrum of an incident wave system over an intermediate-depth region of strongly varying 3D bottom topography is studied in the context of linear theory. The consistent coupled-mode model, developed by Athanassoulis and Belibassakis (J. Fluid Mech. 389, pp. 275-301 (1999)) and extended to three dimensions by Belibassakis et al. (Appl. Ocean Res. 23(6), pp. 319-336 (2001)) is exploited for the calculation of the linear transfer function, connecting the incident wave with the wave conditions at each point in the field. This model is fully dispersive and takes into account reflection, refraction, and diffraction phenomena, without any simplification apart the standard intermediate-depth linearization. The present approach permits the calculation of spectra of all interesting wave quantities (e.g., surface elevation, velocity, pressure) at every point in the liquid domain. The application of the present model to realistic geographical areas requires a vast amount of calculations, calling for the exploitation of advanced computational technologies. In this work, a parallel implementation of the model is developed, using the message passing programming paradigm on a commodity computer cluster. In that way, a direct numerical solution is made feasible for an area of 25 km² over Scripps and La Jolla submarine canyons in Southern California, where a large amount of wave measurements are available. A comparison of numerical results obtained by the present model with field measurements of free-surface frequency spectra transformation is presented, showing excellent agreement. The present approach can be extended to treat weakly nonlinear waves, and it can be further elaborated for studying wave propagation over random bottom topography. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article presents information on a system that tracks moving nanoparticles in three dimensions. The system also provides spectroscopic measurements. The apparatus has been described by the researchers led by Haw Yang at the University of California, Berkeley, California and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. The researchers demonstrated the system by monitoring an individual gold nanoparticle in solution. They used a green laser beam to collect the spectroscopic information. The system is noninvasive and has a spatial resolution of more than 210 nanometer.
