The experimental efficiency has been a central concern for time-consuming experiments. Spin- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (spin-resolved ARPES) is renowned for its inefficiency in spin-detection, despite its outstanding capability to directly determine the spin-polarized electronic properties of materials. Here, we investigate the potential enhancement of the efficiency of spin-resolved ARPES experiments through the integration of measurement informatics. We focus on a representative topological insulator Bi 2 Te 3 , which has well-understood spin-polarized electronic states. We employ Gaussian process regression (GPR) to assess the accumulation of spin polarization information using an indicator known as the GPR score. Our analyses based on the GPR model suggest that the GPR score can serve as a stopping criterion for spin-resolved ARPES experiments. This criterion enables us to conduct efficient spin-resolved ARPES experiments, significantly reducing the time costs by 5-10 times, compared to empirical stopping criteria. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

It has been demonstrated previously that electrons interact differently with chiral molecules depending on their polarization. For enantiomeric pure monolayers of heptahelicene, opposite asymmetries in spin polarization were reported and attributed to the so-called chirality-induced spin selectivity effect. However, these promising proof-of-concept photoemission experiments lack the angular and energy resolution that could provide the necessary insights into the mechanism of this phenomenon. In order to fill in the missing gaps, we provide a detailed spin- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy study of heptahelicene layers on a Cu(111) substrate. Throughout the large accessible energy and angle range, no chirality induced spin asymmetry in photoemission could be observed. Altermagnets are an emerging elementary class of collinear magnets. Unlike ferromagnets, their distinct crystal symmetries inhibit magnetization while, unlike antiferromagnets, they promote strong spin polarization in the band structure. The corresponding unconventional mechanism of time-reversal symmetry breaking without magnetization in the electronic spectra has been regarded as a primary signature of altermagnetism but has not been experimentally visualized to date. We directly observe strong time-reversal symmetry breaking in the band structure of altermagnetic RuO2 by detecting magnetic circular dichroism in angle-resolved photoemission spectra. Our experimental results, supported by ab initio calculations, establish the microscopic electronic structure basis for a family of interesting phenomena and functionalities in fields ranging from topological matter to spintronics, which are based on the unconventional time-reversal symmetry breaking in altermagnets. The article offers information on the spin transport–driven ultrafast magnetization dynamics in a Gadolinium (Gd)/iron (Fe) bilayer. It further discusses that Laser-induced spin transport, a key ingredient in ultrafast spin dynamics; using time- and spin-resolved photoemission spectroscopy to study an antiferromagnetically coupled Gd/Fe bilayer; and the spin transport leads to an ultrafast drop of the spin polarization at the Gd surface.

This discovery offers a possibility on centrosymmetric crystals for potential valleytronic applications. We reply to the Comment by Donath et al. on our setup, which allows a total 3D control of the polarization direction of the electron beam in an inverse photoemission spectroscopy (IPES) experiment, a significant advance with respect to previous setups with partial polarization control. Donath et al. claim an incorrect operation of our setup after comparing their results, treated to enhance the spin asymmetry, with our spectra without the same treatment. They also equal spectra backgrounds instead of equaling peak intensities above the background. Thus, we compare our Cu(001) and Au(111) results with the literature. We reproduce previous results, including spin-up/spin-down spectral differences observed for Au and not observed for Cu. Also, spin-up/spin-down spectral differences appear at the expected reciprocal space regions. In the Comment, it is also stated that our tuning of the spin polarization misses the target because the spectra background changes when tuning the spin. We argue that the background change is irrelevant to IPES since the information is contained in peaks produced by primary electrons, those having conserved their energy in the inverse photoemission process. Second, our experiments agree with previous results from Donath et al. [Wissing et al., New J. Phys. 15, 105001 (2013)] and with a zero-order quantum-mechanical model of spins in vacuum. Deviations are explained by more realistic descriptions including the spin transmission through an interface. Consequently, the operation of our original setup is fully demonstrated. Improving the efficiency of spin generation, injection, and detection remains a key challenge for semiconductor spintronics. Electrical injection and optical orientation are two methods of creating spin polarization in semiconductors, which traditionally require specially tailored p-n junctions, tunnel or Schottky barriers. Alternatively, we introduce here a novel concept for spin-polarized electron emission/injection combining the optocoupler principle based on vacuum spin-polarized light-emitting diode (spin VLED) making it possible to measure the free electron beam polarization injected into the III-V heterostructure with quantum wells (QWs) based on the detection of polarized cathodoluminescence (CL). To study the spin-dependent emission/injection, we developed spin VLEDs, which consist of a compact proximity-focused vacuum tube with a spin-polarized electron source (p-GaAs(Cs,O) or Na2KSb) and the spin detector (III-V heterostructure), both activated to a negative electron affinity (NEA) state. The coupling between the photon helicity and the spin angular momentum of the electrons in the photoemission and injection/detection processes is realized without using either magnetic material or a magnetic field. Spin-current detection efficiency in spin VLED is found to be 27% at room temperature. The created vacuum spin LED paves the way for optical generation and spin manipulation in the developing vacuum semiconductor spintronics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Photocathodes with negative electron affinity (NEA) characteristics have various advantages, such as small energy spread, high spin polarization, and ultrashort pulsing. Nitride semiconductors, such as GaN and InGaN, are promising materials for NEA photocathodes because their lifetimes are longer than those of other materials. In order to further prolong the lifetime, it is important to better understand the deterioration of NEA characteristics. The adsorption of residual gases and back-bombardment by ionized residual gases shorten the lifetime. Among the adsorbed residual gases, H2O has a significant influence. However, the adsorption structures produced by the reaction with H2O are not comprehensively studied so far. In this study, we investigated adsorption structures that deteriorated the NEA characteristics by exposing InGaN and GaAs to an H2O environment and discussed the differences in their lifetimes. By comparing the temperature-programmed desorption curves with and without H2O exposure, the generation of CsOH was confirmed. The desorption of CsOH demonstrated different photoemission behaviors between InGaN and GaAs results. InGaN recovered its NEA characteristics, whereas GaAs did not. Considering the Cs desorption spectra, it is difficult for an NEA surface on InGaN to change chemically, whereas that for GaAs changes easily. The chemical reactivity of the NEA surface is different for InGaN and GaAs, which contributes to the duration of photoemission. We have attempted to prolong the lifetime of InGaN by recovering its NEA characteristics. We found that InGaN with NEA characteristics can be reused easily without thermal treatment at high temperatures. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A new spin- and angle-resolved inverse photoemission setup with a low-energy electron source is presented. The spin-polarized electron source, with a compact design, can decouple the spin polarization vector from the electron beam propagation vector, allowing one to explore any spin orientation at any wavevector in angle-resolved inverse photoemission. The beam polarization can be tuned to any preferred direction with a shielded electron optical system, preserving the parallel beam condition. We demonstrate the performances of the setup by measurements on Cu(001) and Au(111). We estimate the energy resolution of the overall system at room temperature to be ∼170 meV from kBTeff of a Cu(001) Fermi level, allowing a direct comparison to photoemission. The spin-resolved operation of the setup has been demonstrated by measuring the Rashba splitting of the Au(111) Shockley surface state. The effective polarization of the electron beam is P = 30% ± 3%, and the wavevector resolution is ΔkF ≲ 0.06 Å−1. Measurements on the Au(111) surface state demonstrate how the electron beam polarization direction can be tuned in the three spatial dimensions. The maximum of the spin asymmetry is reached when the electron beam polarization is aligned with the in-plane spin polarization of the Au(111) surface state. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Solids undergoing symmetry breaking phase transitions commonly exhibit domains of low symmetry phases with various sizes and morphological shapes. Usually, the shapes of these domains are not directly related to the nature of symmetry breaking. Here, an interesting example of a layered dichalcogenide with a triangular lattice is shown, in which symmetry breaking of electronic charge/orbital is accompanied by formation of striped domains and exotic surface states with peculiar spin textures. Using angle-resolved photoemission spectromicroscopy, the mesoscopic striped domains in the layered IrTe2 are observed across the first order phase transition at ≈280 K. Under further cooling down to 47 K, the striped domains evolve into trijunction domains with electronic anisotropy in three directions. Each domain harbors quasi 1D surface bands forming fragmented Fermi surfaces (Fermi arcs) with peculiar spin polarization revealed by spin-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. The Fermi arc corresponds to an edge state of the 2D bulk electronic bands truncated at the surface, indicating an interesting interplay between the symmetry breaking, surface electronic structure, and the spin state. We obtained epitaxial single-crystal Fe3O4(001)/MgO(001) thin films by magnetron sputtering. The high quality of the grown Fe3O4 films was confirmed by reflection high-energy electron diffraction and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Atomic magnetic properties of Fe3O4(001)/MgO(001) were investigated using vibrating sample magnetometry and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism. The values of saturation magnetization and magnetic moment are 407 ± 5 emu/cm3 (3.26 ± 0.04 μ B / (f. u.) ) and 3.31 ± 0.15 μ B / (f. u.) , respectively, in the Fe3O4 film as thin as 5 nm, which are close to the bulk values. The spin polarization was directly measured using spin-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. The measured spin polarization has a maximum value of −42% ± 3%, which is comparable to the theoretical value for the (2 × 2)R45° reconstructed Fe3O4(001) surface. Furthermore, the film thickness-dependent measurements indicate that the anti-phase boundaries significantly decrease the spin polarization rather than the lattice mismatch. Our results demonstrate that epitaxial Fe3O4(001)/MgO thin films grown by magnetron sputtering have desired magnetic properties, facilitating the potential application of Fe3O4-based spintronic devices. Momentum microscopy (MM) is a novel way of performing angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES). Combined with time-of-flight (ToF) energy recording, its high degree of parallelization is advantageous for photon-hungry experiments like ARPES at x-ray energies, spin-resolved and time-resolved ARPES. This article introduces the technique of ToF-MM and illustrates its performance by selected examples obtained in different spectral ranges. In a multidimensional view of the photoemission process, spectral density function ρ(k,EB), spin polarization P(k,EB), and related quantities of circular dichroism in the angular distribution (CDAD) are part of the "complete experiment," a concept adopted from atomic photoemission. We show examples of spin-resolved valence-band mapping in the UV and VUV, and the soft- and hard-x-ray range. Spin mapping of the Heusler compounds such as Co2MnGa and Co2Fe0.4Mn0.6Si at hν = 6 eV proves that the second compound is a half-metallic ferromagnet. Analysis of the Tamm state on Re(0001) using VUV-excitation reveals a Rashba-type spin texture. Bulk band structure including Fermi surface, Fermi-velocity distribution vF(k,EF), full CDAD texture, and spin signature of W(110) have been derived via tomographic mapping with soft x-rays. Hard x rays enable accessing large k||-regions so that the final-state sphere crosses many Brillouin zones in k-space with different kz's. At hν = 5.3 keV, this fast 4D mapping mode (at a fixed hν) revealed the temperature dependence of the Fermi surface of the Kondo system YbRh2Si2. Probing the true bulk spin polarization of Fe3O4 at hν = 5 keV proved its half-metallic nature. The emerging method of ToF-MM with fs x-ray pulses from free-electron lasers enables simultaneous valence, core-level, and photoelectron diffraction measurements in the ultrafast regime. Spin polarization and the Gilbert damping, as the two key parameters of the magnetic materials for spintronic applications, were suggested to be inversely proportional to each other in a series of Heusler alloys. Recently, large anisotropic Gilbert damping was found in Co2FeAl thin films, implying that spin polarization may be also anisotropic. Here, we report an isotropic spin polarization with a constant value of 60% in a 20-nm Co2FeAl thin film with a B2 structure, using spin- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and time-resolved magneto-optical Kerr effect. Furthermore, this result was also supported by the ab initio calculations that the difference of the spin polarization between all the orientations is less than 1% for the Co2FeAl thin film. The emergence of Dirac semimetals has stimulated growing attention, owing to the considerable technological potential arising from their peculiar exotic quantum transport related to their nontrivial topological states. Especially, materials showing type‐II Dirac fermions afford novel device functionalities enabled by anisotropic optical and magnetotransport properties. Nevertheless, real technological implementation has remained elusive so far. Definitely, in most Dirac semimetals, the Dirac point lies deep below the Fermi level, limiting technological exploitation. Here, it is shown that kitkaite (NiTeSe) represents an ideal platform for type‐II Dirac fermiology based on spin‐resolved angle‐resolved photoemission spectroscopy and density functional theory. Precisely, the existence of type‐II bulk Dirac fermions is discovered in NiTeSe around the Fermi level and the presence of topological surface states with strong (≈50%) spin polarization. By means of surface‐science experiments in near‐ambient pressure conditions, chemical inertness towards ambient gases (oxygen and water) is also demonstrated. Correspondingly, NiTeSe‐based devices without encapsulation afford long‐term efficiency, as demonstrated by the direct implementation of a NiTeSe‐based microwave receiver with a room‐temperature photocurrent of 2.8 µA at 28 GHz and more than two orders of magnitude linear dynamic range. Spin-valley locking in monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides has attracted enormous interest, since it offers potential for valleytronic and optoelectronic applications. Such an exotic electronic state has sparsely been seen in bulk materials. Here, we report spin-valley locking in a Dirac semimetal BaMnSb2. This is revealed by comprehensive studies using first principles calculations, tight-binding and effective model analyses, angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements. Moreover, this material also exhibits a stacked quantum Hall effect (QHE). The spin-valley degeneracy extracted from the QHE is close to 2. This result, together with the Landau level spin splitting, further confirms the spin-valley locking picture. In the extreme quantum limit, we also observed a plateau in the z-axis resistance, suggestive of a two-dimensional chiral surface state present in the quantum Hall state. These findings establish BaMnSb2 as a rare platform for exploring coupled spin and valley physics in bulk single crystals and accessing 3D interacting topological states. Valley dependent spin polarization called spin-valley locking appears in absence of magnetism but it is limited to rare examples of transition metal dichalcogenides. Monolayers of chiral molecules can preferentially transmit electrons with a specific spin orientation, introducing chiral molecules as efficient spin filters. This phenomenon is established as chirality‐induced spin selectivity (CISS) and was demonstrated directly for the first time in self‐assembled monolayers (SAMs) of double‐stranded DNA (dsDNA)1. Here, we discuss SAMs of double‐stranded peptide nucleic acid (dsPNA) as a system which allows for systematic investigations of the influence of various molecular properties on CISS. In photoemission studies, SAMs of chiral, γ‐modified PNA show significant spin filtering of up to P = (24.4 ± 4.3)% spin polarization. The polarization values found in PNA lacking chiral monomers are considerably lower at about P = 12%. The results confirm that the preferred spin orientation is directly linked to the molecular handedness and indicate that the spin filtering capacity of the dsPNA helices might be enhanced by introduction of chiral centers in the constituting peptide monomers. The ultrafast demagnetization effect allows for the generation of femtosecond spin current pulses, which is expected to extend the fields of spin transport and spintronics to the femtosecond time domain. Thus far, directly observing the spin polarization induced by spin injection on the femtosecond time scale has not been possible. Herein, we present time- and spin-resolved photoemission results of spin injection from a laser-excited ferromagnet into a thin gold layer. The injected spin polarization is aligned along the magnetization direction of the underlying ferromagnet. Its decay time depends on the thickness of the gold layer, indicating that transport as well as storage of spins are relevant. • A 2D imaging spin-filter for photoemission electron microscopy is introduced. • Spin–orbit scattering at Au/Ir(001) offers up to 104 detection channels. • Two spin-components are detected, scattering at an oxygen passivated iron film. • A method to detect all three spin components is outlined. A two-dimensional imaging spin-filter for photo-emission electron microscopy is described. The spin-filter is capable of imaging the electron spin polarization of either real space or momentum space electron distributions. As a scattering target either Au/Ir(001) comes into use, where spin sensitivity results from using spin–orbit scattering or Fe(001)-p(1×1)O that exploits exchange interaction. Both scattering targets were characterized with respect to their working points and Sherman function in a separate setup. Spin-polarization images of secondary electrons from the magnetic domains of a poly-crystalline iron sample are shown using both scattering targets. Images with a spin-filter using Au/Ir(001) show more than 104 discrete detection channels which increases the effective two-dimensional figure-of-merit (FoM) of this spin-filter by four orders of magnitude compared to single-channel spin detectors. The chemically inert graphene/Ni(111) interface represents an intriguing system where a magnetic sample is protected by a single layer of carbon atoms, which passivates the surface. Despite the fact that it has been the subject matter of many researches, inverse photoemission (IPES) data are still missing as well as a comparison with spin‐resolved photoemission (SR‐PES) spectra. Here, for the sake of completeness, we present both in situ SR‐PES and SR‐IPES spectra. We observe that normal emission and normal incidence data are dominated by the Ni features while characteristic signals from carbon arise at higher angles. The spin polarization of Ni bands, investigated here along the Γ ¯‐ M ¯ direction of the surface Brillouin zone, is only slightly affected by the graphene overlayer in both filled and empty states. Conventional Rashba spin polarization is caused by the combination of strong spin-orbit interaction and spatial inversion asymmetry. However, Rashba-Dresselhaus-type spin-split states are predicted in the centrosymmetric LaOBiS2 system by recent theory, which stem from the local inversion asymmetry of active BiS2 layer. By performing high-resolution spinand angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we have investigated the electronic band structure and spin texture of superconductor LaO0.55F0.45BiS2. Here we present direct spectroscopic evidence for the local spin polarization of both the valence band and the conduction band. In particular, the coexistence of Rashba-like and Dresselhaus-like spin textures has been observed in the conduction band. The finding is of key importance for fabrication of proposed dual-gated spin-field effect transistor. Moreover, the spin-split band leads to a spin-momentum locking Fermi surface from which superconductivity emerges. Complete photoemission experiments, enabling measurement of the full quantum set of the photoelectron final state, are in high demand for studying materials and nanostructures whose properties are determined by strong electron and spin correlations. Here the implementation of the new spin polarimeter VESPA (Very Efficient Spin Polarization Analysis) at the APE-NFFA beamline at Elettra is reported, which is based on the exchange coupling between the photoelectron spin and a ferromagnetic surface in a reflectometry setup. The system was designed to be integrated with a dedicated Scienta-Omicron DA30 electron energy analyzer allowing for two simultaneous reflectometry measurements, along perpendicular axes, that, after magnetization switching of the two targets, allow the three-dimensional vectorial reconstruction of the spin polarization to be performed while operating the DA30 in high-resolution mode. VESPA represents the very first installation for spin-resolved ARPES (SPARPES) at the Elettra synchrotron in Trieste, and is being heavily exploited by SPARPES users since autumn 2015. [Display omitted] • Fe and Ni multilayer epitaxy is realized on oxygen-passivated Fe(0 0 1). • Oxygen floats on the surface and affects the magnetic response of the system. • The spin polarization of the photoemission signal is quenched upon Ni growth. • A single Fe layer abruptly restores the polarization signal. • According to simulations, the spectral polarization follows surface magnetization. We investigated the magnetic behaviour of an Fe overlayer on a Ni buffer layer (Fe/Ni multilayer system) grown on top of the Fe- p (1 × 1)O surface, with a particular focus on the modifications observed in the spin-resolved electronic structure and the role of oxygen, introduced in the system in a well-defined amount at the substrate preparation stage. The structural properties are investigated by means of low energy electron diffraction, that confirms the formation of an epitaxial system featuring a metastable surface lattice. Spin-resolved photoemission spectroscopy testifies a strong decrease of the spectral spin polarization for increasing thickness of the Ni buffer layer, reaching a minimum from a nominal thickness of 6 Ni atomic layers. Surprisingly, the growth of a single Fe overlayer is sufficient to restore most of the original polarization signal, thus creating an ultrathin bcc Fe film seemingly decoupled from the substrate. Ab initio calculations track the modifications of the magnetic moments of the surface layers that quench upon Ni deposition and restore with additional Fe growth. Spin-resolved inverse photoemission highlights a notable reduction of the density of majority states just above the Fermi level, possibly influencing the magnetic response of the system. Recently, the chiral-induced spin selectivity in molecular systems has attracted extensive interest among the scientific communities. Here, we investigate the effect of the gate voltage on spin-selective electron transport through the α-helical peptide/protein molecule contacted by two nonmagnetic electrodes. Based on an effective model Hamiltonian and the Landauer-Büttiker formula, we calculate the conductance and the spin polarization under an external electric field, which is perpendicular to the helix axis of the α-helical peptide/protein molecule. Our results indicate that both the magnitude and the direction of the gate field have a significant effect on the conductance and the spin polarization. The spin filtration efficiency can be improved by properly tuning the gate voltage, especially in the case of the strong dephasing regime. And the spin polarization increases monotonically with the molecular length without the gate voltage, which is consistent with the recent experiment, and presents oscillating behavior in the presence of the gate voltage. In addition, the spin selectivity is robust against the dephasing, the on-site energy disorder, and the space angle disorder under the gate voltage. The interface of graphene with ferromagnets is highly relevant for spintronics, because graphene on Co(0001) shows a largely intact Dirac cone and strong hybridization with Co 3d states breaking the sublattice symmetry that had been considered mutually exclusive. Here we show by spin- and angle-resolved photoemission that the Dirac cone and Dirac point are also highly spin polarized (~-25%), which reinforces the puzzling issue of a strong graphene-substrate interaction. The problem is solved by our ab initio calculations which show that (i) the upper and lower halves of the Dirac cone belong to different sublattices and (ii) one half is spin polarized by spin-dependent hybridization because it is situated at the edge of a minority-spin band gap of the Co substrate. We report the photon energy dependence of photo-induced inverse spin Hall effect (ISHE) in Pt/GaAs and Pt/Ge Schottky junctions. The experimental results are compared with a spin driftdiffusion model, which highlights the role played by the different spin lifetime in the two semiconductors, in determining the energy dependence of the ISHE signal detected in the Pt layer. The good qualitative agreement between experiments and modelling indicates that photo-induced ISHE can be used as a tool to characterize spin lifetime in semiconductors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A remarkably large spin signal is observed on nonmagnetic W(110) for a highly symmetric unoccupied state with no intrinsic spin polarization. The magnitude and, more importantly, the sign of this spin signal, measured by spin- and angle-resolved inverse photoemission for normal electron incidence, can be tuned in a user-defined manner by variation of the photon-detection angle and/or by rotating the spin-polarization direction of the incident electrons. Using calculations of the orbitally decomposed spectral densities, this effect is traced back to a mixing of different symmetries within the respective state. This explanation is underlined by the behavior of a second electronic state of pure symmetry, which does not show such a spin signal. In general, the spin signals of electronic states are not only influenced by their intrinsic spin polarization but also by the choice of symmetry-breaking experimental parameters in combination with the particular orbital characters of the states under investigation. Band splittings, chiral spin polarization, and topological surface states generated by spin-orbit interactions at crystal surfaces are receiving a lot of attention for their potential device applications as well as fascinating physical properties. Most studies have focused on sp states near the Fermi energy, which are relevant for transport and have long lifetimes. Far less explored, though in principle stronger, are spin-orbit interaction effects within d states, including those deep below the Fermi energy. Here, we report a joint photoemission and ab initio study of spin-orbit effects in the deep 4-orbital surface states of a 24-layer Au film grown on Ag(111) and a 24-layer Ag film grown on Au(111), singling out a conical intersection (Dirac cone) between two surface states in a large surface-projectedgap at the time-reversal symmetric M points. Unlike the often isotropic dispersion at F point Dirac cones, the M point cones are strongly anisotropic. Spin-resolved photoemission is one of the most direct ways of measuring the magnetization of a ferromagnet. If all valence band electrons contribute, the measured average spin polarization is proportional to the magnetization. This is even the case if electronic excitations are present, and thus is of particular interest for studying the response of the magnetization to a pump laser pulse. Here, we demonstrate the feasibility of ultrafast spin-resolved photoemission using free electron laser (FEL) radiation and investigate the effect of space charge on the detected spin polarization. The sample is exposed to the radiation of the FEL FLASH in Hamburg. Surprisingly, the measured spin polarization depends on the fluence of the FEL radiation: a higher FEL fluence reduces the measured spin polarization. Space-charge simulations can explain this effect. These findings have consequences for future spin-polarized photoemission experiments using pulsed photon sources. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We have performed spin- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy of the topological insulator Pb(Bi,Sb)2Te4 and observed significant out-of-plane spin polarization on the hexagonally warped Dirac-cone surface state. To put this into context, we carried out quantitative analysis of the warping strengths for various topological insulators [Pb(Bi,Sb)2Te4, Bi2Te3, BijSei, and TlBiSe2] and elucidated that the out-of-plane spin polarization Pz is systematically correlated with the warping strength. However, the magnitude of Pz is found to be only half that expected from the k.p theory when the warping is strong. Besides confirming a universal relationship between the spin polarization and the surface state structure, our data provide an empirical guiding principle for tuning the spin polarization in topological insulators. Spin-polarized photoemission is used to study Si1-xGex. alloys epitaxially grown on a Si substrate. Spin-oriented electrons are generated in the conduction band upon excitation with circularly polarized light. We prove that in these structures it is possible to lower the vacuum level of the system below the conduction band minimum at the Γ point of the Brillouin zone and show that electron spin polarization values P = 40 ± 3% can be achieved when promoting electrons with direct transitions at Γ. Such values can be greatly increased, up to P = 72 ± 3%, in compressively strained thin epitaxial films, thus obtaining performances very close to those of III-V semiconductor heterostructures. A first-principles approach, based on the real-space multiple scattering Green's function method, is presented for spin- and angle-resolved resonant photoemission from magnetic surfaces. It is applied to the Fe(010) valence band photoemission excited with circularly polarized x rays around the Fe Z-3 absorption edge. When the photon energy is swept through the Fe 2p-3d resonance, the valence band spectra are strongly modified in terms of absolute and relative peak intensities, degree of spin polarization, and light polarization dependence. New peaks in the spin-polarized spectra are identified as spin-flip transitions induced by exchange decay of spin-mixed core holes. By comparison with single-atom and band-structure data, it is shown that both intra-atomic and multiple scattering effects strongly influence the spectra. We show how the different features linked to states of different orbital symmetry in the d band are differently enhanced by the resonant effect. The appearance and origin of circular dichroism and spin polarization are analyzed for different geometries of light incidence and electron emission direction, providing guidelines for future experiments. Abstract: Using a photoelectron emission microscope (PEEM), we demonstrate spin-resolved electron spectroscopic imaging of ultrathin magnetic Co films grown on Cu(100). The spin-filter, based on the spin-dependent reflection of low energy electrons from a W(100) crystal, is attached to an aberration corrected electrostatic energy analyzer coupled to an electrostatic PEEM column. We present a method for the quantitative measurement of the electron spin polarization at 4×103 points of the PEEM image, simultaneously. This approach uses the subsequent acquisition of two images with different scattering energies of the electrons at the W(100) target to directly derive the spin polarization without the need of magnetization reversal of the sample. Abstract: The spin- and angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy from ultrathin Cr films on Fe(110) is investigated by means of first-principles electronic structure and photoemission calculations. The antiferromagnetic ordering in the Cr films leads in dependence on film thickness to a rapidly decreasing and oscillating photoelectron spin polarization, in reasonable agreement with recent experiments (Dedkov (2007) ). The oscillation period is explained by quantum-well states in the Cr film and by a Fermi surface nesting vector. The importance of transition matrix elements is highlighted. Abstract: Single-crystalline Co2MnSi Heusler alloy films have been grown on GaAs(001) substrates by pulsed laser deposition. The best crystallographic quality has been achieved after deposition at 450K. Spin-resolved photoemission measurements at BESSY reveal spin-resolved density of states that are in qualitative agreement with recent band structure calculations. The spin polarization of photoelectrons close to the Fermi level is found to be at most 12% at room temperature, in contrast to the predicted half-metallic behavior. We suggest that this discrepancy may be attributed to a non-magnetic surface region and/or partial chemical disorder in the Co2MnSi lattice. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The spin character of the splitting of the Shockley surface state on Au(111) is directly verified by measurements of the in-plane and out-of-plane spin polarizations in angle-resolved photoemission spectra. The two parabolic sub-bands that are momentum-shifted with respect to each other, reveal a distinct, opposite spin polarization that within the errors lies in the surface plane. The measured in-plane orientation of the spin vectors is consistent with the simple spin structure expected from a nearly-free-electron model, where the polarization axis is tangential to the Fermi surface of the surface state. Photoelectron diffraction (PED) effects in magnetic solids are described within a one-electron non-relativistic model. The theory presented permits a straightforward calculation of spin-resolved PED patterns, whereby different spin arrangements in a magnetic solid may be considered. Both spin–orbit interaction and exchange interaction with the spin-polarized valence band have been taken into account in the description of the initial core state. The multiple scattering of the excited photoelectron wave is treated within a multiple-scattering cluster model. The theory may be applied to explain PED effects in magnetic solids in comparison to the nonmagnetic case. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The magnetic and electronic properties of itinerant ferromagnets and their interplay have been studied in the last few years by spin resolved electron spectroscopy on one hand and by high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission experiments on the other. We discuss how the two approaches can be combined in a high resolution electron spectrometer with spin resolution for angle-scanned Fermi surface mapping experiments. We have built this new instrument, which allows an advance into a deeper understanding of magnetic thin film or multilayer systems, where band structures become intricately dense in momentum space and where the magnetization direction can change from layer to layer. Spin-resolution is thus required to arrive at a correct assignment of spectral features. A fully three-dimensional polarimeter makes the instrument ‘complete’ in the sense that all properties of the photoelectron are measured. First experiments on Ni(111) conclusively confirm previous band and spin assignments at the Fermi level and demonstrate the correct functioning of the apparatus. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Recent observations of considerable spin polarization in photoemission from metal surfaces through monolayers of chiral molecules were followed by several efforts to rationalize the results as the effect of spin-orbit interaction that accompanies electronic motion on helical, or more generally strongly curved, potential surfaces. In this paper we (a) argue, using simple models, that motion in curved force-fields with the typical energies used and the characteristic geometry of DNA cannot account for such observations; (b) introduce the concept of induced spin filtering, whereupon selectivity in the transmission of the electron orbital angular momentum can induce spin selectivity in the transmission process provided there is strong spin-orbit coupling in the substrate; and (c) show that the spin polarization in the tunneling current as well as the photoemission current from gold covered by helical adsorbates can be of the observed order of magnitude. Our results can account for most of the published observations that involved gold and silver substrates; however, recent results obtained with an aluminum substrate can be rationalized within the present model only if strong spin-orbit coupling is caused by the built-in electric field at the molecule-meta l interface. • We report on the growth and characterization of Fe/Co bilayers on bcc W(110). • The bottom Co layer relaxes to its bulk hcp structure showing an hexagonal surface. • Even with the Co layer, we detect Fe relaxation with the formation of bcc nuclei. • We measure a not nil in-plane spectral spin polarization at magnetic remanence. We report on the growth of a Fe/Co bilayer on W(110) and its electronic and magnetic structure characterization by means of low energy electron diffraction and spin-resolved photoemission spectroscopies. The Co bottom layer, investigated in the thickness range from 2 to 10 monolayers (ML), relaxes immediately to its bulk hcp structure and is therefore used to provide an hexagonal top surface for the growth of metastable Fe films. Notwithstanding the presence of the Co layer, and similar to our previous findings concerning the growth of Fe on a Ni layer [Phys Rev B 94 195155], we report the formation of bcc nuclei, indicative of lattice relaxation, even for a Fe thicknesses as low as 2 ML. Vanadium diselenide (VSe 2) is a van der Waals layered transitional metal dichalcogenide, which has attracted intensive attention due to the coexistence of charge density wave (CDW) transition and magnetic property down to two-dimension limit. We apply Spin- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurement to explore the evolution of the valence eletronic states of VSe 2 accompanied with the CDW transition. The V 3 d -derived-band in the vicinity of Fermi energy shows negligible spin polarization both below and above the CDW transition temperature. Furthermore, a sizable spin polarization of Se 4 p electronic states has been clearly observed, indicating an atomic-layer-dependent spin polarization in VSe 2. Air oxidation of chromium films is investigated as an alternative technique for making chromium (III, IV) oxides junctions, of interest for magnetoelectronics applications. Characterization of the surface by angle-resolved X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (ARXPS) shows that a surface layer of insulating Cr2O3 is covering metallic CrO2. The phase separation of the two types of oxides is more pronounced after increased oxidation. Low-temperature electric transport curve confirms the zero-bias anomaly observed in the past on oxidized chromium junctions. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
