Analysis of a pilot survey conducted during the initial studies in a doctoral program. The project has been proposed with academic and educational purposes, aiming to analyse the difficulties that occur in written interlan guage of Spanish students who are native speakers of the Brazilian variant of Portuguese in an undergraduation course in Spanish Studies. The theoretical basis of the study is Contrastive Linguistics (CL), based on models of Error Analysis (EA) and Interlanguage Analysis (IA). In the pilot survey, a group of students of the last semester of the course were asked to produce three written texts. The texts were collected in the classroom, during the teaching training in the first semester of 2011. This paper presents the preliminary analysis of the data. The results of the study are expected to provide a vision of the written interlanguage produced by these students and an analysis of the points observed.

This paper discusses the boundaries of Frame Semantics for multilingual lexicon development. This is a contrastive study of verbs of judgment in English and Brazilian Portuguese using the parallel corpus COMPARA. The contrastive analysis of four lexical units, to accuse, to blame, to criticize and to praise places emphasis on points to be developed in order to create multilingual frame-based databases that are able to describe lexical meaning more broadly. The discussion of translation equivalents is important not only for translation studies, but also for multilingual lexicon development. Finding a proper translation equivalent is the first step in the development of multilingual resources. Considering the romance languages, especially spanish, it is of vital importance, to study the autonomous feedback of every single student, basing the analysis on the description of CLIL's independence and general characteristics. Furthermore, I will examine the didactic method as a result of the idea of "Bildung", discussed in Philosophy, Science Education and IT. in the third part, the paper will underline the philosophycal and practical foundation of education in both CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) and the autonomy of the student. Moreover it will consider these determinants from a psycho-pedagogical point of view and from that of the digital learning created by the new technologies in communication. As a final remark, the paper illustrates the pilot experiment realized, thanks to the collaboration of Professor J. Sarabia Martinez (interpreter), at the High School of Rome "Lucrezio Caro", in the academic year 2014/15.

This study aims to map researches on Contrastive Linguistics in Brazil that emphasize the contrast between Brazilian Portuguese and Spanish, from 1988 to 2010. The mapping was carried out with the following specific objectives: (i) categorize the researches in the analytical models of Contrastive Linguistics, (ii) identify the Brazilian institutions where those researches are carried out, and (iii) classify the researches according to the linguistic approach employed. This work consists of a bibliographical survey whose data were obtained from the theses database of CAPES in November 2011. The search criterion (without specific date) used the following search terms combined: Contrastive Linguistics Spanish, Contrastive Analysis Spanish, Error Analysis Spanish, Interlanguage Spanish, Transfer Spanish, Interference Spanish, and Fossilization Spanish. The output was a total of 111 studies, whose largest concentration is in the South and Southeast regions of Brazil, featuring 27 and 64 studies, respectively. The preferred approach concerns the morphosyntactic aspects, namely the pronominal system of the two languages . The present study concludes that researches in Brazilian universities have developed important work on the morpho syntactic, lexical-semantic and phonetic-phonological aspects, however the work with pragmatic or discursive approaches is still incipient.

Este trabalho tem por objetivo geral mapear as pesquisas realizadas em Linguística Contrastiva no Brasil que enfatizam o contraste entre o PB e o espanhol, no período de 1988 a 2010. Na realização deste mapeamento, tem-se como objetivos específicos: (i) categorizar as pesquisas nos modelos de análise da Linguística Contrastiva; (ii) identificar as instituições brasileiras onde se desenvolvem essas pesquisas e (iii) enquadrar as pesquisas conforme a abor dagem linguística empregada.Os dados foram obtidos no Banco de Teses da CAPES em novembro de 2011. O critério de busca (sem delimitação de data) usou os seguintes termos combinados: Linguística Contrastiva espanhol; Análise Contrastiva espanhol; Análise de erros espanhol; Interlíngua espanhol; Transfe rência espanhol Interfe rência espanhol e Fossilização espanhol. Encontraram-se 111 referências, e sua maior concentração está nas regiões Sul e Sudeste, que apresentam 27 e 64 pesquisas, respectivamente. No concernente à abordagem empregada nesses estudos, privilegiaram-se os aspectos morfos sintáticos, apresentando-se como tema recorrente o sistema pronominal das duas línguas. Conclui-se que, nas universidades brasileiras, desen volveram importantes pesquisas nas abordagens morfossintática, léxico-semântica e fonético fonológica, no entanto ainda são incipientes os trabalhos que contemplam os aspectos pragmáticos e discursivos.

Riassunto La paura ha da sempre fatto parte del panorama politico, sociale e culturale di ogni cultura. I proverbi, dal canto loro, raccolgono e fissano nel tempo le paure dell’uomo. Il presente studio si concentrerà, così, sui proverbi italiani e francesi che riguardano la paura. Ai fini della ricerca in oggetto, sono stati combinati e confrontati i dati ottenuti da risorse cartacee (dizionari di proverbi) e due corpora di grandi dimensioni, sincronici e comparabili, uno di lingua italiana e l’altro di lingua francese, chiamati rispettivamente itWaC e frWaC. Tale articolo farà luce su una metodologia di ricerca basata sull’approccio detto corpus-driven. Per fare ciò, sono stati reperiti, nei due corpora sopraccitati, i proverbi italiani e francesi sulla paura in maniera semi-automatica, grazie all’uso di marcatori di proverbio. Verranno, inoltre, esaminate problematiche quali la ricerca di proverbi in dizionari cartacei, il funzionamento semantico dei proverbi o ancora l’individuazione di equivalenti interlinguistici di proverbi. Abstract Fear has always been part of the political, social, and cultural landscape of every culture, and proverbs collect and perpetuate human fears. This study will thus focus on French and Italian proverbs concerning this emotion. In order to carry out the research, data from print resources, such as paper dictionaries of proverbs, and from two large, synchronic and comparable Italian and French corpora, called itWaC and frWaC respectively, have been combined and compared. This paper will shed light on a research methodology based on the corpus-driven approach. To this end, Italian and French proverbs on fear have been extracted semi-automatically from the two above-mentioned corpora by using markers of proverbs. Furthermore, some specific issues, such as the search for proverbs in paper dictionaries, the semantic functioning of proverbs, or the identification of interlingual equivalents of proverbs will be discussed. Résumé La peur est une émotion qui a depuis toujours fait partie du panorama politique, social et culturel de toute culture. Les proverbes, quant à eux, ne font que recenser et pérenniser les peurs de l’homme. Cette étude se penchera sur les proverbes italiens et français concernant la peur. Afin de mener à bien cette recherche, les données repérées dans des ressources papier (dictionnaires de proverbes) et dans de grands corpus synchroniques comparables italien (itWaC) et français (frWaC) ont été combinées et comparées. De fait, le présent travail tend à mettre en évidence une méthodologie de recherche reposant sur l’approche dite corpus-driven. Pour ce faire, les proverbes sur la peur seront repérés de manière semi-automatique dans les corpus linguistiques mentionnés ci-dessus à l’aide de marqueurs de proverbe. En outre, des problématiques spécifiques telles que la recherche des proverbes dans les dictionnaires papier, le fonctionnement sémantique des proverbes eux-mêmes ou le repérage d’équivalents interlinguistiques de proverbes seront affrontés de manière approfondie.

En los últimos tiempos los estudios de lingüística contrastiva entre el italiano y el español han experimentado un gran crecimiento. A pesar de esto, aún quedan por analizar ciertos campos, como por ejemplo el de la fraseología, al que solo se ha prestado atención recientemente, porque se creía que dos lenguas afines desde muchos puntos de vista, también debían serlo en lo que se refiere a las estructuras fijas. Nuestro propósito, por tanto, consiste en realizar una pequeña contribución en este sentido y, así, vamos a centrarnos en el estudio de algunas colocaciones italianas en las que aparece el color "bianco", en relación con el español (además, también llevaremos a cabo las propuestas de traducción relativas). Este trabajo tiene que considerarse solo un primer paso, porque nuestra intención es seguir investigando sobre el ámbito de las colocaciones italianas en las que hacen acto de presencia los colores, al tratarse de un campo semántico que todavía no se ha estudiado con la profundidad debida. The studies of contrastive linguistics between Italian and Spanish have been considerably growing lately.Nevertheless, a lot of areas must be still analyzed. For example, the field of phraseology has begun to be studied only in the latest years due to the well-known affinity between both languages. Therefore, we present in this paper our contribution on this aspect. We will attempt to draw the correct use of Italian collocations of the term of color 'white'. We will also include a proposal of translation of each Italian example into Spanish. This paper must be considered a beginning point since our aim is to continue our research on the semantic ground of the collocations related to other color terms, as it is a field that has not yet been studied thoroughly.

This paper aims to compare teenagers' use of some conversational discourse markers in Madrid and Buenos Aires, and is based on the analysis of recordings of spontaneous conversations of youth language in the Corpus of Adolescent Oral Language - project (COLA). From the perspective of variational pragmatics, the authors compare the discourse markers, analyze the functions, determine the frequency, and the proportion per thousand words. The gender question and the position of the markers form part of the analysis. The result of the analysis reveals that the variation of discourse markers is not exclusively determined or influenced by the speaker's characteristics, but also by the persons to whom the message is directed. Análise de uma pesquisa piloto realizada em fase inicial de desenvol vimento no doutorado. O projeto nasceu com propósitos acadêmicos e pedagógicos, tendo como objetivo principal a análise de dificuldades que ocorrem na interlíngua escrita de estudantes de espanhol, falantes nativos da variante brasileira do português, em um curso de Licenciatura em Letras Espanhol na modalidade presencial. O estudo é feito a partir da Linguística Contrastiva (LC), tendo por base os modelos de Análise de Erros (AE) e Análise da Interlíngua (AI). A pesquisa piloto desenvolveu-se com uma proposta de produção escrita de três textos por um grupo de alunos do último semestre de língua espanhola do curso. Os textos foram coletados em sala de aula, durante a realização de estágio docência, no primeiro semestre de 2011. Para este trabalho. serão apresentadas as análises preliminares dos dados. Espera-se que, a partir dos resultados encon trados, possa-se ter uma visão da interlíngua escrita produzida por esses alunos e uma análise dos pontos observados.

MONOGRAFÍA: FOMENTO Y ENSEÑANZA DE LA COMPETENCIA PRAGMÁTICA EN ELE/EL2: ANÁLISIS DE CASOS Y PROPUESTAS DIDÁCTICAS El presente estudio se centra en la observación del comportamiento del artículo en dos lenguas afines, español e italiano, con el objetivo de ofrecer una comparación de las estrategias comunicativas. La adquisición de este operador lingüístico plantea a los alumnos y a los docentes una serie de interrogantes que los enfoques más tradicionales ofrecidos por los manuales de gramática y de lenguas extranjeras no siempre son capaces de solventar. Es necesario aplicar nuevos métodos al ámbito del contraste interlingüístico, abandonando el modelo más descriptivo del funcionamiento del artículo y adoptando un enfoque más comunicativo de reflexión metalingüística. Para sacar a la luz determinados fenómenos, examinaremos un corpus de conversaciones task-oriented adoptando las herramientas que nos proporciona la gramática metaoperacional. PRAGMATIC AND CONTRASTIVE ANALYSIS OF THE USE OF THE ARTICLE IN SPANISH AND ITALIAN. This paper presents an analysis of the article in two related languages - Spanish and Italian - with the aim of offering a comparison of communication strategies. The acquisition of this linguistic operator causes problems to students and teachers that the traditional approaches offered by grammar and foreign language manuals are not always able to overcome. New methods are required in the context of interlingual contrast, order to abandon a descriptive model of the article's functioning to reach a more communicative approach of metalinguistic reflection. To bring out certain aspects, we will examine a corpus of task-oriented conversations, adopting the tools provided by meta-operational grammar.

This article deals with the form and use of reformulation markers in research papers written in English, Spanish and Catalan. Considering the form and frequency of the markers, English papers tend to prefer simple fixed markers and include fewer reformulators than Spanish and Catalan. On the contrary, formal Catalan and Spanish papers include more markers, some of which are complex and allow for some structural variability. As for use, reformulation markers establish dynamic relationships between portions of discourse which can be identified in our corpus with expansion, reduction and permutation. The analysis of the corpus shows that English authors usually reformulate to add more information to the concept (expansion), whereas Catalan and Spanish authors reduce the contents or the implicatures of the previous formulation more frequently than English.

After a brief revision of the major currents of thought and grammatical models in the history of CS (Contrastive Studies), a method of analysis suitable for corpus-based descriptive studies across languages is presented and discussed in this paper. As an alternative to translation corpora, the use of comparable corpora is advocated and put into practice in a large-scale research on a particular semantic function, quantification, and its expression in two languages, English and Spanish. The different phases of the process are explained and a summary of achievements is provided. The ultimate purpose of the paper is to contribute to the strengthening of the discipline by offering new results about one pair of languages and by suggesting a methodology that can be broadly applied to different semantic fields and pairs of languages., Après une brève révision des principaux courants de pensée et des modèles grammaticaux dans l’histoire des Études Comparées, nous présentons une méthode d’analyse appropriée aux études descriptives fondées sur un corpus. Nous avons utilisé un « corpus comparable » pour une recherche sur une fonction sémantique, la quantification, et sur son expression dans deux langues, l’anglais et l’espagnol. Les différentes phases du processus sont expliquées et un sommaire des résultats est exposé. Le but final de l’article est de contribuer au renforcement de la discipline grâce à l’apport de résultats sur une paire de langues et à celui d’une méthodologie qui peut être appliquée à des champs sémantiques différents et à des paires de langues.

RESUMEN: El propósito de este texto es presentar la variación terminológica intralingüística en corpus comparables entre el portugués brasileño y el portugués europeo identificados en el proyecto de pasantía postdoctoral Diccionario de terminología de nanociencia y nanotecnología: integración entre el portugués brasileño y el portugués europeo. El fenómeno de la variación en Terminología ha experimentado un interés renovado, especialmente a partir de la década de 1980, cuando las reevaluaciones de la Teoría General de Terminología permitieron reconocer que la Unidad de Conocimiento Especializada proviene del lenguaje natural y que, como tal, tiene un sinfín de particularidades. La cuestión de la integración intralingüística surge de la constitución de un corpus de las dos variantes, para evaluar las posibilidades más adecuadas para este propósito, de acuerdo con criterios predeterminados y en común acuerdo con especialistas. Es posible afirmar que esta diversidad resulta de las diferentes concepciones que existen tanto en el área de conocimiento en cuestión, por su propia estructura conceptual compleja, como en las diferentes subáreas que la componen, sin hablar del papel que tienen la variedad de prácticas vinculadas a un área de conocimiento dada, la diversidad de usuarios que la emplean y la diversidad de organismos que se ocupan de ella. A continuación, se presenta una visión general de la nanociencia / nanotecnología y de las teorías sobre el fenómeno de la variación en la Terminología, así como ejemplos de variaciones terminológicas en esta área del conocimiento. ABSTRACT: This article aims at showing the intralinguistic terminological variation in comparable corpora of Brazilian and European Portuguese identified in the post-doctoral internship project Terminological dictionary of nanoscience and nanotechnology: Integration between Brazilian and European Portuguese. Since the 1980s, the phenomenon of variation in Terminology has experienced a renewed interest when re-evaluations of the General Theory of Terminology enabled the recognition that the Unit of Specialized Knowledge comes from natural language and that, as such, it has all kinds of peculiarities. The matter of intralinguistic integration arises from the constitution of a corpus of the two variants aiming at assessing the most suitable possibilities for this purpose, according to preestablished criteria and by common consent with specialists. It is possible to assert that this diversity results from the different conceptions that exist both in the field of knowledge at hand, given its own complex conceptual structure, and in the different subfields which compose it, not to mention the role played by the variety of practices linked to any field of knowledge, the diversity of its users and organizations that resource to specialized language. Furthermore, the paper offers an overview of nanoscience / nanotechnology and theories about the phenomenon of variation in Terminology, along with examples of terminological variations in this field of knowledge. RÉSUMÉ: Le but de ce texte est de présenter la variation terminologique intralinguistique dans des corpus comparables entre le portugais brésilien et le portugais européen repérée dans le projet de stage post-doctoral Dictionnaire terminologique de la nanoscience et de la nanotechnologie : intégration entre le portugais brésilien et le portugais européen. Le phénomène de la variation en Terminologie a connu un regain d´intérêt surtout à partir des années 1980, quand des réévaluations de la Théorie Générale de la Terminologie ont permis de reconnaître que l´Unité de Connaissance Spécialisée relève de la langue naturelle et que, en tant que telle, elle en possède toutes les particularités. La question de l´intégration intralinguistique se pose à partir de la constitution d´un corpus des deux variantes, en vue d´évaluer les possibilités les mieux adaptées à cet effet, selon des critères préétablis et en commun accord avec des spécialistes. Il est possible d´affirmer que cette diversité résulte des différentes conceptions qui existent tant dans le domaine de connaissance en question, en raison de sa propre structure conceptuelle complexe, tout comme les différents sous-domaines qui le composent, sans parler du rôle qu´y jouent la variété des pratiques liées à un domaine de connaissance donné, la diversité des usagers qui s´en servent et la diversité des organismes qui s´en occupent. Un aperçu de la nanoscience/nanotechnologie et des théories à propos du phénomène de la variation en Terminologie, ainsi que des exemples de variations terminologiques dans ce domaine de connaissance sont présentés par la suite.

27. News about the Project for the elaboration of the 'Digital lexical repertoire of Spanish-Portuguese doubts' in the historical-contrasting perspective

In the present work, we report, problematizing them, the guiding parameters of the project entitled “Digital electronic lexicon of doubts at the interfaces between Spanish and Portuguese languages”, which aims to elaborate and implement a Spanish-Portuguese doubts dictionary that includes characteristics that do not exist to date. In this sense, the entries, far from the onomasiological characteristics or lexical equivalents that, in general, present the bilingual dictionaries, will offer semasiological information regarding both the meaning of the slogans and any other linguistic elements, whether of phonic, morphosyntactic or pragmatic character, leading to the resolution of the user’s eventual doubt. We will revisit the areas of contrasting linguistics and historical linguistics in the elaboration of articles, which will allow us to offer, in addition to a panoramic view of the question, an answer focused on why the phenomenon-and not just on the mere description of a fact-, an inexcusable purpose of any scientific approach to its object of study. Interdisciplinary teams of professors, technicians, and students from the Federal University of Pernambuco and the University of Salamanca (Spain) will implement the project. There is currently no similar publication that presents the listed information at the same time. In turn, digital support represents the future of lexicographic publications, since it guarantees universal and free accessibility, facilitates its use by consulting subjects, opening the range of possibilities that the paper format prevented. The project on-screen will highlight the studies in Applied Linguistics (Lexicography, Language Teaching, and Learning), in Historical Linguistics and in Contrasting Linguistics carried out in Brazil by the repercussions, in terms of their internationalization, in view of the direct collaboration in this project of the University of Salamanca (Spain), a world reference institution for teaching Spanish to foreigners for decades. No presente trabalho, noticiamos, problematizando-os, os parâmetros norteadores do projeto intitulado “Repertório léxico eletrônico digital de dúvidas nas interfaces entre as línguas espanhola e portuguesa”, o qual objetiva a elaboração e implantação de um dicionário de dúvidas espanhol-português que inclui características não existentes até o presente. Nesse sentido, os verbetes, longe das características onomasiológicas ou de equivalentes lexicais que, pelo geral, apresentam os dicionários bilíngues, oferecerá informações semasiológicas referentes tanto ao sentido dos lemas quanto a quaisquer outros elementos linguísticos, sejam eles de caráter fônico, morfossintático ou pragmático, conducentes à resolução da eventual dúvida do usuário. Revisitaremos os âmbitos da linguística contrastiva e da linguística histórica na elaboração dos artigos, o que vai permitir oferecer, além de uma visão panorâmica da questão, uma resposta focada no porquê do fenômeno – e não apenas na mera descrição de um fato –, finalidade inescusável de toda aproximação científica ao seu objeto de estudo. Equipes interdisciplinares de professores, técnicos e estudantes da Universidade Federal de Pernambuco e da Universidade de Salamanca (Espanha) executarão o projeto. Não há atualmente nenhuma publicação semelhante que apresente, ao mesmo tempo, as informações elencadas. Por sua vez, o suporte digital representa o futuro das publicações lexicográficas, uma vez que garante a acessibilidade universal e gratuita, facilita seu uso por parte dos sujeitos consultores, abrindo o leque de possibilidades que o formato em papel impedia. O projeto em tela colocará em evidência os estudos em Linguística aplicada (Lexicografia, Ensino-aprendizagem de línguas), em Linguística histórica e em Linguística contrastiva realizados no Brasil pela repercussão, em termos de internacionalização destes, tendo em vista a colaboração direta neste projeto da Universidade de Salamanca (Espanha), instituição de referência mundial há décadas no Ensino da Língua Espanhola para Estrangeiros.

RESUMO As fórmulas de rotina são fenômenos linguísticos significativos nas áreas de ensino de línguas estrangeiras e lexicografia bilíngue. No entanto, poucas análises contrastantes destas unidades existem para o par de idiomas alemão-italiano. O objetivo deste artigo é uma análise contrastiva pragmalinguística de ‘fórmulas de desejo’. O principal critério de contraste é o valor pragmático das unidades, ou seja, os atos de fala que podem ser executados através delas, bem como as características situacionais e sociolinguísticas das fórmulas e a produtividade de certos padrões sintático-lexicais em alemão e italiano. Equivalências e diferenças entre grupos de fórmulas, bem como entre as unidades individuais de ambos os idiomas, são identificadas. ABSTRACT Routine formulae are significant linguistic phenomena in the areas of foreign language teaching and bilingual lexicography. Nevertheless, few contrastive analysis of these units exist for the German-Italian language pair. The aim of this paper is a pragmalinguistic contrastive analysis of ‘wishing formulas’. The main criterion of contrasting is the pragmatic value of the units, i.e. the speech acts that can be performed through them, as well as the situational and sociolinguistic features of the formulae and the productivity of certain syntactic-lexical patterns in German and Italian. Equivalences and differences between groups of formulae as well as between the individual units of both languages are identified.

These profiles sum up and reflect the different conceptions, representations or cognitive domains related to this important body part existing in those five languages.

No base do pressuposto de que a redução de sílabas átonas junto com a elisão da vogal Schwa é essencial para manter o ritmo do alemão, foi analisado se os falantes fazem uso da redução do tamanho da palavra e da sílaba, da redução quantitativa e qualitativa de vogais e da redução quantitativa de consoantes em ambas as línguas. Para tanto, foram coletados dados de fala de cinco aprendizes de alemão. Os participantes foram gravados ao ler o texto Nordwind und Sonne, respectivamente O vento norte e o sol, em velocidade regular e em velocidade acelerada. Foi demonstrado que os participantes, ao aumentar a velocidade de fala, reduzem o tamanho das palavras em ambas as línguas. Quanto à redução da duração das sílabas, mostraram-se diferenças entre os participantes e entre as línguas. Enquanto no português os participantes executam as sílabas átonas de maneira mais curta do que as sílabas acentuadas, no alemão, nem todos os participantes aplicam esse rácio de sílabas. Além disso foi demonstrado que os participantes brasileiros tendem a eliminar a vogal átona final ao ler em velocidade regular e velocidade acelerada. No alemão, os participantes apagam a vogal Schwa em sílabas finais em alguns casos, em outros casos eles articulam a mesma vogal como vogal anterior e não como vogal central. A premissa de que o aumento da velocidade no alemão iria causar mais apagamentos de consoantes não foi confirmada neste trabalho. No final foi argumentado que a transferência da estratégia da elisão de vogais átonas finais no português pode ter causado, em alguns casos, interferências na fala dos participantes em alemão. Abstract: This study investigates which strategies of phonetic reduction speakers of the Paraná variant of Portuguese use to increase their speech rate when reading a text in German and in Portuguese. Based on the assumption that the reduction of unstressed syllables together with the elision of the vowel Schwa is essential for maintaining the German rhythm, this master thesis analyses if the speakers use word and syllable length reduction, quantitative and qualitative vowel reduction, and quantitative consonant reduction in each language. Therefore, data from five learners of German as a foreign language were collected. The participants were recorded while reading the text Nordwind und Sonne, respectively O vento norte e o sol, in usual and accelerated speech rate. It was shown that the participants reduce word length in both languages When increasing the speech rate. Regarding reduction of syllable length, differences between the participants and the languages appeared. In Portuguese the participants perform unstressed syllables shorter than stressed syllables, whereas in German not all participants apply this syllable ratio. Further, it was shown that the Brazilian participants tend to eliminate the final unstressed vowel when reading in regular and accelerated speech rate. In German the participants eliminate the vowel Schwa in final syllables in some cases, in other cases They articulate the same vowel as a front vowel and not as a central vowel. The assumption that the increase of the speech rate in German would cause more consonant elisions was not confirmed in this study. Finally, this paper argues that the transfer of the Portuguese strategy of final unstressed vowel omission might have caused interferences in the German Reading in some cases.

En aquest article es presenta un protocol per a la realització de l’anàlisi contrastiva segmental, mètode d’investigació en adquisició i aprenentatge de segones llengües que permet formular hipòtesis sobre la interllengua dels aprenents. En primer lloc, s’explica el paper de la lingüística contrastiva i la importància de la competència fònica en l’aprenentatge de segones llengües. En segon lloc, es descriu un protocol que consta de quatre fases. En la primera i la segona fase, respectivament, es proposa un model per d’escriure i contrastar els sistemes fonològics de la llengua meta i de la llengua materna de l’aprenent. La tercera fase correspon a la formulació d’hipòtesis de treball derivades de l’anàlisi contrastiva i la quarta, a la verificació empírica d’aquestes hipòtesis.

This article analyzes the contributions of contrastive linguistics to second language teaching. First, through a brief historical overview, the role of this discipline in the development of language teaching methodologies is studied. Next, the most recent studies on interaction between languages when learning a new one are examined, and examples of the implementation of a contrastive perspective for teaching phonetics, morphosyntax and pragmatics in Spanish as a second language classroom are provided. Then, taking into account the benefits that can be derived from the interaction of the linguistic speaker’s repertoires, the concept of translanguaging is introduced, along with an analysis of its principles and some suggestions to implement it as a pedagogical practice, in this case, through the teaching of lexical and sociocultural components. Finally, this paper concludes that current second language methodologies suggest a multilingual approach that promotes the activation of previous knowledge and its integration into the social context in order to take advantage of the speaker’s linguistic repertoire. Este artículo analiza los aportes de la lingüística contrastiva a la enseñanza de segundas lenguas. En primer lugar, a través de una breve reseña histórica, se estudia el papel de esta disciplina en el desarrollo de diversas metodologías de enseñanza de la lengua. Seguidamente, se revisan las investigaciones más recientes sobre la interacción entre lenguas cuando se aprende una nueva y se brindan ejemplos de las posibles aplicaciones de una perspectiva contrastiva para la enseñanza de la fonética, la morfosintaxis y la pragmática en el aula de español como segunda lengua. A continuación, tomando en cuenta los posibles beneficios que puede aportar la interacción entre repertorios lingüísticos de hablantes de distintas lenguas, se introduce el concepto de translenguar, junto con un análisis de sus planteamientos y algunas estrategias para incorporarlo como práctica pedagógica, en este caso, a través de la enseñanza del léxico y del componente sociocultural. Finalmente, se concluye que las metodologías actuales en enseñanza de segundas lenguas sugieren un enfoque multilingüe que promueva la activación del conocimiento previo y su integración en el contexto social, con el fin de aprovechar el repertorio lingüístico del hablante.

I verbi sintagmatici (VS) italiani sono costrutti analitici formati da una base verbale (V) e una particella (P), generalmente di tipo locativo. In italiano sono più produttivi che in francese, poiché in quest'ultima lingua i loro costituenti sono soggetti a importanti restrizioni combinatorie. In questo contributo cercheremo di determinare quali strutture morfosintattiche si utilizzino più spesso in francese per tradurre i VS italiani. Faremo pertanto ricorso a un corpus parallelo italiano-francese costituito dal romanzo di Sandro Veronesi Caos calmo (2005) e la sua traduzione. Dopo aver offerto l'inventario dei VS presenti nel corpus, con una proposta di analisi quantitativa e qualitativa dei costrutti, catalogheremo i traducenti attraverso criteri formali, di tipo morfosintattico. L'analisi consentirà di formulare delle considerazioni in ottica contrastiva e di sottolineare delle divergenze tipologiche rilevanti tra le due lingue in esame. Italian verb-particle constructions (VPCs) are generally formed of a verb base (V) and a locative particle (P). In French VPCs are less productive than in Italian, since their constituents are subject to strict combinatorial restrictions. In this paper, the morphosyntactic structures that are most often used to translate Italian VPCs into French will be determined. In order to do so, an Italian-French parallel corpus consisting of the novel Caos calmo (Veronesi, 2005) and its translation will be analysed. Firstly, an inventory of the VPCs that were found within the corpus will be offered. Secondly, these constructions will be analysed under a quantitative and qualitative point of view. Thirdly, translation equivalents will be classified according to morphosyntactic criteria. Their analysis will lead to formulate contrastive considerations, highlighting some relevant typological divergences between the two languages.

A diferencia de los sustantivos, los verbos propios del discurso científico-técnico apenas han sido tratados en la investigación terminológica tradicional. En la actualidad, sin embargo, se ha reivindicado la importancia de su estudio, pues estos constituyen una categoría gramatical imprescindible tanto para la codificación lingüística como también para la adquisición de conocimiento especializado. En este trabajo se analizan los verbos empleados en la descripción arquitectónica de textos en español y alemán. Se lleva a cabo un análisis contrastivo de estos verbos, para lo cual se organizan, por una parte, en categorías semánticas y, por otra, en dominios de origen según su valor metafórico. El fin de esta investigación es hacer notar las diferencias de conceptualización de ambas lenguas en el discurso arquitectónico., Traditional terminological research has focused heavily on the study of nouns. However, the last years have seen a major interest in the study of other categories like verbs. Verbs do not only offer important information about a specialised domain; they are also of interest to those who write texts for this domain. This paper presents the results of a contrastive study of verbs in texts about architecture in Spanish and German. The verbs were assigned to lexical categories and lexical domains, which were compared to detect the differences in the conceptualisation in the two languages.

p. 207-229 The present paper reports on a translation-based teaching-oriented study of the expression of path and manner of motion (Talmy 1972) in English and Spanish. The aim is to explore contrastive differences by analysing transla-tions, with special attention to crossed transposition (Molina and Hurtado Albir 2002), which implies a double shift of part-of-speech from the source text to the target text, and is the expected type of transfer between a satel-lite-framed language like English and a verb-framed language like Spanish. Two corpora have been used, a monolingual corpus of Children’s Short Sto-ries, the CSS-corpus, and a parallel corpus English-Spanish, P-ACTRES 2.0. The results show a high tendency for implicitation of either path or manner and for compression in the translations into Spanish, whereas crossed trans-position is preferred in the translations into English. Also, some pedagogical applications are suggested for including these motion expressions in TEFL to young learners through storytelling. SI

Das Korpus-PaGeS ist ein zweisprachiges Parallelkorpus, das aus einer Sammlung von spanischen und deutschen Texten der Gegenwartssprache besteht. Der Aufsatz beschreibt die einzelnen Arbeitsphasen in der Erstellung des Korpus. Die Beschreibung umfasst die manuelle Vorverarbeitung, die linguistische Aufbereitung und das automatische und manuelle Verfahren für die Alignierung der Texte. Es wird auf den Zugriff und die Visualisierung der Daten eingegangen und die verschiedenen Suchmöglichkeiten werden erläutert. Abschließend werden die geplanten nächsten Schritte skizziert. The corpus PaGeS is a bilingual parallel corpus, that comprises a collection of contemporary Spanish and German texts. This paper describes the different steps in the construction of the corpus. The description includes the manual preparation process of the texts to make the documents suitable for further processing, the linguistic annotation and the manual and automatic procedure of the sentence alignment of the texts. It is dealt with the access and the visualization of the data and the different search possibilities are explained. Finally, the next steps of future work are outlined. El corpus PaGeS es un corpus bilingüe paralelo que incluye una colección de textos contemporáneos alemanes y españoles. Este artículo describe las sucesivas fases en la elaboración del corpus. Esta descripción incluye el proceso de preparación de los textos para procesarlos, la anotación lingüística y el procedimiento de alineación automático y manual. Se aborda el tema del acceso y de la visualización de los resultados, así como las diferentes posibilidades de búsqueda. Finalmente se esbozan los pasos futuros.

The works of the Japanese novelist Yoko Ogawa have been translated into different languages, and it is worth pointing out the translations to Spanish of novels like La fórmula preferida del profesor (Ogawa 2008) or La niña que iba en hipopótamo a la escuela (Ogawa 2011) and so on. The aim of this paper is to analyze some of the problems regarding the semantic ambiguity, the omission of onomatopoeias and the difficulty in interpreting the original text that we can find in the Spanish translation of Hakase no aishita sūshiki (tr. La fórmula preferida del profesor). This article presents a theoretical linguistic analysis that explores in depth the asymmetries between lexical categories in Japanese and Spanish. Las obras de la escritora japonesa Yoko Ogawa han sido traducidas a diversas lenguas, y merece la pena destacar aquellas traducciones al español, como La fórmula preferida del profesor (Ogawa 2008) o La niña que iba en hipopótamo a la escuela (Ogawa 2011), entre otras. El objetivo del presente trabajo consiste en llevar a cabo un análisis de ciertos problemas relativos a las ambigüedades semánticas, a la omisión de las onomatopeyas y a la dificultad en la interpretación del texto original que podemos encontrar en la versión española de Hakase no aishita sūshiki (trad. La fórmula preferida del profesor). El trabajo realiza un análisis lingüístico teórico que explora en profundidad las asimetrías entre las categorías léxicas del japonés y el español.

El objetivo de este trabajo es analizar el nivel microestructural de un corpus pseudocomparable formado por sitios web corporativos sobre automoción, con especial atención a los elementos léxicos. Para ello, nos hemos servido de los fundamentos de la lingüística de corpus, de las teorías lingüísticas funcionalistas y de una metodología mixta cuantitativa-cualitativa, cuya justificación exponemos en trabajos anteriores. Más allá de algunos errores de traducción, los resultados indican que no existen diferencias sobresalientes entre las diferentes versiones originales (inglés de Estados Unidos e inglés de Reino Unido) y la meta (español de España), cuestión que puede deberse a los propios procesos de internacionalización y localización. This paper aims to analyse the microstructure of a pseudocomparable corpus on corporate websites in the automotive sector, focusing on the lexical items. In order to achieve these objectives, a corpus linguistic framework, some functionalist linguistic theories and a mixed (qualitative-quantitative) method, whose principles are described in existing literature, have been followed. With the exception of some translation mistakes, the results suggest that there is no remarkable difference between the original versions (United States English and United Kingdom English) and the target versions (Spain Spanish). This might be due to the internationalization and localization processes.

Los falsos amigos constituyen una de las dificultades principales que afrontan los discentes que persiguen hablar, escribir e interaccionar en una lengua extranjera. Con un falso amigo se indica una palabra o estructura de un idioma extranjero que se asemeja, en lo escrito o en lo hablado, a una palabra o estructura en la lengua materna del hablante, pero que cuenta con un significado distinto. Abundan los ejemplos de falsas relaciones lingüísticas (totales o parciales) entre lengua materna y lengua meta. No obstante, la experiencia práctica respecto a este tema de investigación es bastante escasa. Los falsos amigos bien se omiten, bien se reducen, en general, a listas o inventarios de los casos más notables y, por ende, no se integran en el aula junto con otras estrategias y tácticas de enseñanza-aprendizaje para una instrucción significativa. Consecuentemente, se pretende con la presente tesis doctoral aportar aspectos relevantes, tanto teóricos como de carácter práctico, tocante a la tipología, los usos y la utilidad e interés didáctico en las aulas de ELE de los falsos amigos como muestras de interferencias interlingüísticas. Vinculado a ello, la perspectiva contrastiva suministra los elementos epistemológicos de análisis: los hablantes están naturalmente expuestos a pasar estructuras y significados y distribuciones de esas estructuras y significados de su lengua materna o su primera lengua de aprendizaje a otra lengua extranjera que están aprendiendo. Esta suposición básica precisa el campo de aplicación de la Lingüística Contrastiva que engloba postulados psicolingüísticos y pedagógicos de dos metodologías complementarias entre sí: Análisis Contrastivo y Análisis de Errores. Asimismo, se consideran los fundamentos que enmarcan el Plurilingüismo con indagar en los últimos desarrollos teórico-empíricos en cuanto a las influencias interlingüísticas a la hora de aprender una lengua extranjera. A la luz de las premisas teóricas, las interferencias son efecto de la relación entre la lengua materna y la lengua que se estudia. Por otra parte, hoy día, aprender dos o más idiomas es una disposición mundial, de ahí que la delimitación en los procesos de aprendizaje no se dé exclusivamente entre la lengua materna y la lengua meta. Así pues, una primera lengua extranjera aprendida puede resultar un factor que influya positiva o negativamente en una segunda o tercera lengua extranjera que se está aprendiendo. En este sentido, con la presente investigación la atención se concentra en torno a los falsos amigos cuando el español (segunda lengua extranjera) entra en contacto con el inglés (primera lengua extranjera) y el rumano o el holandés (lenguas maternas)., The major problems relating to false friends entail difficulties for most students in terms of pronunciation, writing and interaction in a foreign language. With false friends we refer to words or structures of different languages that display morphological affinity but, at the same time, semantic divergence. Examples of (total or partial) false linguistic relations between mother tongue and target language abound. Nevertheless, a practical experience concerning this subject is quite scarce. False friends are either omitted or reduced, in general, to lists or inventories of the most notable cases. Hence, false friends are not (much) integrated in the foreign language classroom along with other teaching and learning strategies and tactics for a meaningful instruction. Consequently, this Ph.D. thesis aims at providing relevant aspects of both theoretical and practical nature in relation to the typology, the uses and the didactic value of false friends as instances of interlinguistic influence. In conjunction therewith, the contrastive perspective makes available the epistemological elements of the present analysis: the speakers are naturally prone to transfer structures and meanings and distributions of these structures and meanings of their mother tongue or of their first foreign language to another foreign language to learn. This basic statement is analyzed by means of Contrastive Linguistics which includes psycholinguistic and educational postulates of two complementary methodologies: Contrastive Analysis and Analysis of Errors. In addition, there are considered the principles that define Plurilingualism by investigating the recent studies regarding interlinguistic influences when learning a foreign language. In light of the theoretical assumptions, interferences result from the relationship between the mother tongue and the foreign language. However, to learn two or more foreign languages is a worldwide tendency nowadays, therefore delimitations in the learning processes could not be given between the mother tongue and the target language exclusively. Thus, a first foreign language can be a factor that positively or negatively influences when learning a second foreign language. In this regard, the present paper is an attempt to cover different aspects on the topic of false friends when Spanish (second foreign language to learn) comes into contact with English (first foreign language) and Romanian or Dutch (mother tongues)., Els falsos amics constitueixen una de les dificultats principals que afronten els discents que persegueixen parlar, escriure i interaccionar en una llengua estrangera. Amb un fals amic s'indica una paraula o estructura d'un idioma estranger que s'assembla, en l'escrit o en la forma oral, a una paraula o estructura en la llengua materna del parlant, però que compta amb un significat diferent. Abunden els exemples de falses relacions lingüístiques (totals o parcials) entre llengua materna i llengua meta. No obstant això, l'experiència pràctica respecte a aquest tema d'exploració és força escassa. Els falsos amics o bé s'ometen, o bé es redueixen, en general, a llistes o inventaris dels casos més notables i, per tant, no s'integren a l'aula juntament amb altres estratègies i tàctiques d'ensenyament-aprenentatge per a una instrucció significativa. Conseqüentment, es pretén amb la present tesi doctoral aportar aspectes rellevants, tant teòrics com de caràcter pràctic, pel que fa a la tipologia, els usos i la utilitat i interés didàctic a les aules d’ELE dels falsos amics com mostres d’interferències interlingüístiques. Vinculat amb això, la perspectiva contrastiva subministra els elements epistemològics d'anàlisi: els parlants són naturalment propensos a passar estructures i significats i distribucions d'aquestes estructures i significats de la seva llengua materna o la seva primera llengua d'aprenentatge a una altra llengua estrangera que estan aprenent. Aquesta suposició bàsica precisa el camp d'aplicació de la Lingüística Contrastiva que engloba postulats psicolingüístics i pedagògics de dues metodologies complementàries entre sí: Anàlisi Contrastiva i Anàlisi d'Errors. També, es valoren els princips del Plurilingüisme amb indagar en els últims desenvolupaments sobre les influències interlingüístiques quan s’aprèn una llengua estrangera. A la llum de les premisses teòriques, les interferències són efecte de la relació entre la llengua materna i la llengua estrangera que s'estudia. D'altra banda, avui en dia, aprendre dos o més idiomes estrangers és una disposició mundial, per aquest motiu la delimitació en els processos d'aprenentatge no es dóna exclusivament entre la llengua materna i la llengua meta. Així doncs, una primera llengua estrangera apresa pot resultar un factor que influeixi positivament o negativament en una segona o tercera llengua estrangera que s'està aprenent. En aquest sentit, amb aquesta recerca l'atenció es polaritza al voltant dels falsos amics quan l'espanyol (segona llengua estrangera) entra en contacte amb l'anglès (primera llengua estrangera) i el romanès o l'holandès (llengües maternes).

German and Italian have quite different rhythmic and/or melodic characteristics. This paper investigates the correlates of that impression, focussing on intonation and syllable structure. The data are made up of different types of repair activity in German and Italian conversations: problems of expectation, problems of understanding, and contradictions. It turns out that speakers of German and Italian use the same intonational procedures to constitute and contextualise activity types in conversations. For the two languages it is therefore possible to devise a uniform model of intonation contour assignment according to function. A comparison of the syllabic structures of the two languages reveals that the main source of the different impressions made by German and Italian prosodic structure is not intonation, but syllable structure. This accords with recent speech perception studies.

En estas páginas se introducen algunos aspectos de la gramática japonesa que resultan de especial interés contrastivo respecto a la gramática española y que son complejos de entender desde la perspectiva de un hablante nativo del español. Para abordar estos problemas planteo determinados conceptos de la Lingüística Cognitiva que considero útiles como herramientas para entender dichas cuestiones. Estos son los conceptos de papel cognitivo y papel semántico, el de evento transitivo prototípico y el de construcción. La identificación de aspectos contrastivos se ha llevado a cabo mediante un rastreo de los problemas señalados en manuales y gramáticas de japonés como segunda lengua y se ha analizado también un corpus de ejemplos de errores producidos por estudiantes extranjeros en el aprendizaje de japonés como L2. Este tipo de estudio tiene evidentes aplicaciones prácticas, por ejemplo en la descripción de lenguas para su contraste, enseñanza de segundas lenguas o para el entendimiento y corrección de errores de población inmigrante, lexicografía, etc. In these pages, some contrastive aspects of Japanese Grammar characterized by a special contrastive interest in regard to Spanish Grammar and that can be considered as difficult to be under- stood from the point of view of Spanish speaking people, are introduced. In order to approach these problems, some concepts of Cognitive Linguistics are applied, because they are considered useful as a tool to understand these problematic aspects. These concepts are cognitive paper, semantic role, canonic transitivity and construction. For the selection of contrastive aspects it has been made a search of the problems showed in grammars and learning books of Japanese as a Second Language, and a corpus of examples of mistakes produced by foreign students of Japanese as a second language has also been analyzed. This kind of study has obvious practical applications, as the description of languages in contrast, teaching of second languages, or understanding and correction of mistakes, lexicography, etc.

En aquest article es presenta un protocol per a la realització de l’anàlisi contrastiva segmental, mètode d’investigació en adquisició i aprenentatge de segones llengües que permet formular hipòtesis sobre la interllengua dels aprenents. En primer lloc, s’explica el paper de la lingüística contrastiva i la importància de la competència fònica en l’aprenentatge de segones llengües. En segon lloc, es descriu un protocol que consta de quatre fases. En la primera i la segona fase, respectivament, es proposa un model per d’escriure i contrastar els sistemes fonològics de la llengua meta i de la llengua materna de l’aprenent. La tercera fase correspon a la formulació d’hipòtesis de treball derivades de l’anàlisi contrastiva i la quarta, a la verificació empírica d’aquestes hipòtesis., This article presents a procedure for carrying out contrastive segmentation analysis, a research method used in second language acquisition and learning which enables the development of a hypothesis in relation to a learner’s interlanguage. The article starts by explaining the role of contrastive linguistics and the relevance of phonetic competence in second language learning. It continues with a four-phase protocol, in which the first and second phases respectively suggest a model to describe and contrast the phonetic systems of the target language and the learner’s mother tongue. The third phase presents a hypothesis of work derived from the contrastive analysis, and the fourth provides empirical verification of the theory presented., En este artículo se presenta un protocolo para la realización del análisis contrastivo segmental, método de investigación en adquisición y aprendizaje de segundas lenguas que permite formular hipótesis sobre la interlengua de los aprendientes. En primer lugar, se explica el papel de la lingüística contrastiva y la relevancia de la competencia fónica en el aprendizaje de segundas lenguas. En segundo lugar, se describe un protocolo compuesto de cuatro fases. En la primera y en la segunda fase, respectivamente, se propone un modelo para la descripción y el contraste de los sistemas fonológicos de la lengua meta y de la lengua materna del aprendiente. La tercera fase corresponde a la formulación de hipótesis de trabajo derivadas del análisis contrastivo, y la cuarta, a la verificación empírica de las mismas.

Although the category or sub-category modal particles (MPs) is - as such - unknown to Portuguese grammarians and lexicographers, the Portuguese spoken and written language does, in fact, use these lexical units. They present some syntactic features identical to those of German MPs, but their distribution in the sentence, compared with the latter, involves essential differences in their semantics and pragmatics. This paper not only shows how particles such as e que and sempre are employed, and what functions they can assume in certain types of utterances, but also indicates their respective equivalents in German.

Este artículo pretende demostrar la afirmación de que el sustantivo success (“éxito”), tal y como se utiliza en los Estados Unidos, es cultural y lingüísticamente muy diferente al sustantivo éxito en español. La traducción literal a menudo es incapaz de reflejar la inmensa pluralidad semántica del concepto norteamericano y tiende, por ende, a caer en la parodia simplista por parte del hispanohablante que lo asocia al materialismo e individualismo estadounidense. Desde la etnolingüística, la etimología, la semántica y la lexicografía comprobaremos la falta de equivalencia cognitiva de los dos términos, sus divergentes connotaciones en la lengua y en último término su diferente contextualización en la memoria psicológica cultural de los dos grupos de hablantes. This paper presents the hypothesis that the English word success, as used in the United States, is both culturally and linguistically very different from the Spanish noun “éxito”. The literal translation cannot possibly reflect the enormous semantic plurality of the concept in American society and, therefore, it tends to be associated by the Spanish speaker with North American individualistic or materialistic attitudes. The lack of cognitive equivalence will be analyzed from an ethnolinguistic, etymological, semantic and lexicographical perspective so as to fully illustrate the different contextualization of both terms within the cultural psyche of each group of speakers.

For almost three decades a German Turkish variant called Kanaksprak or Türkendeutsch has developed and established itself among second or third generation immigrant speakers of more than one ethnic origin or minority. In German film productions this multilingual reality became apparent almost immediately, as many films, since the beginning of the 1990s, have focused on the problems of immigrants by using subtitles in multilingual dialogues or emphasizing the evolving ethnic variants in film dialogues. In these films codemixing and codeswitching from standard German toTurkish, Türkendeutsch, or to a combination of German dialect or regional variety and Türkendeutsch is quite frequent. Türkendeutsch is often used to mark characters or to obtain a humoristic effect in comedies. This paper discusses the problems arising when German multilingual films are dubbed into Italian, and tries to shed light on the different sociolinguistic reality in Italy as well as on the different attitudes in the Italian film industry concerning the use of immigrant’s ethnic variants.

El presente trabajo expone los resultados de un estudio preliminar de la entonación de una variedad del aragonés: el chistabino, que se habla en el valle de Gistau, sobre todo en el pueblo de Gistaín, en la provincia de Huesca, España. Esta primera aproximación a la entonación del chistabino apunta hacia el hecho de que las aseveraciones no marcadas, igual que en castellano, se articulan con descenso final, las preguntas pronominales no marcadas con ascenso (típicamente descenso en castellano), y las preguntas absolutas no marcadas suelen decirse con patrón circunflejo al final (habitualmente ascenso en castellano). De todo ello se infiere que el chistabino hace más uso que el castellano de tonos ascendentes y de contornos circunflejos. Los núcleos no terminales, como en castellano, suelen realizarse con tono ascendente o formar parte de esa curva melódica. Cuando la distribución de las curvas entonativas no es la que acabamos de describir, se trata de la presencia de algún matiz pragmático (insistencia, cortesía, incertidumbre, etc.). El uso del patrón circunflejo en las preguntas absolutas también se da en Asturias, Galicia y el español del Caribe. En castellano, tal empleo es marcado., This paper reports on a preliminary study of the speech of the intonation of a variety of Aragonese: Chistabino, spoken in the valley of Gistau, especially in Gistaín, in the Province of Huesca, Spain. This first approach to the intonation of Chistabino suggests that unmarked statements, as in Spanish, are said on a terminal fall, unmarked pronominal questions are frequently pronounced on a rise (prototypically a fall in Spanish), and unmarked yes-no questions are often said with a rise-fall pattern (usually a rise in Spanish, if unmarked). So it appears that Chistabino uses rising contours and complex tunes more often than Spanish. Non-final nuclei, as in Spanish, tend to be performed on or form part of a rise. Where alternative patterns are used, there is some pragmatic nuance (insistence, politeness, uncertainty, etc.). Use of the fall-rise in yes-no questions has also been found in Asturias, Galicia and Caribbean Spanish, while in Castilian it is marked.
