Nitric oxide (NO) in human tears regulates numerous ocular surface processes, such as tear generation, corneal wound healing, conjunctival vascular tone, and so forth. Any deviation from its normal concentration is linked to various ocular syndromes, including microbial keratitis, conjunctivitis, pterygium, dry eye, retinitis, glaucoma, and so forth. Therefore, precise monitoring of NO in tears can be considered as a potential biomarker for ocular diseases. Here, we report a highly sensitive and selective electrochemical NO sensor using carbon ink-based electrodes. Counter, working (WE), and reference electrodes have been designed and painted on a butter paper by using carbon ink. To improve the sensing performance, the WE has been modified with a gold nanoparticle (Au NP)-deposited carbon cloth (CC). Such a paper-based sensor demonstrated high sensitivity of ∼0.34 μA μM -1 cm -2 , ultralow detection limit of ∼2.35 nM, wide linear range of 10 nM-0.4 mM, and fast response time (0.35 s). The sensor also showed excellent stability and selectivity toward the interfering agents in human body fluids. Such a low-cost, flexible paper-based sensor was employed for the detection of NO in artificial tears.

In this work, a sustainable 3D carbon aerogel (AO-WPC) is prepared from waste paper (WP), and used for efficient antibiotics removal from water. The AO-WPC aerogel shows good mechanical property and can recover after 100th of 30 % compression strain. The specific surface area of AO-WPC aerogel is up to 654.58 m 2 /g. More importantly, this aerogel reveals proper pore size distribution, including micro sized macropores between carbon fibers and intrinsic nano scale mesopores (11.86 nm), which is conducive to remove antibiotics from water. Taking tetracycline (Tc) as an example, the maximum adsorption capacity and adsorption rate of AO-WPC for Tc are as high as 384.6 mg/g and 0.510 g/(mg‧min), respectively, which exhibits significant advantages over most of the recent absorbents, and the adsorption toward Tc reveals good resistance to various environmental factors, including pH, various ions, and dissolved organic matter (DOM). Moreover, good thermal stability enables the AO-WPC aerogel to be regenerated through simple burning, and the adsorption capacity of Tc only decreases by 10.4 % after 10 cycles. Mechanism research shows that hydrogen bonding and π-π electron-donor-acceptor (EDA) interaction play the important role in the adsorption. Plastics are ubiquitous in today's lifestyle, and their indiscriminate use has led to the accumulation of plastic waste in landfills and oceans. The waste accumulates and breaks into micro-particles that enter the food chain, causing severe threats to human health, wildlife, and the ecosystem. Environment-friendly and bio-based degradable materials offer a sustainable alternative to the vastly used synthetic materials. Here, a polylactic acid and carbon nanofiber-based membrane and a paper-based colorimetric sensor have been developed. The membrane had a surface area of 3.02 m 2 g -1 and a pore size of 18.77 nm. The pores were evenly distributed with a pore volume of 0.0137 cm 3 g -1 . The membrane was evaluated in accordance with OECD guidelines and was found to be safe for tested aquatic and terrestrial models. The activated PLA-CNF membrane was further used as a bio-based electrode for the electrochemical detection of nitrates (NO 3 - ) in water samples with a detection limit of 0.046 ppm and sensitivity of 1.69 × 10 -4 A ppm -1 , whereas the developed paper-based colorimetric sensor had a detection limit of 156 ppm for NO -2 . The rapid discrimination of bacteria is currently an emerging trend in the fields of food safety, medical detection, and environmental observation. Traditional methods often require lengthy culturing processes, specialized analytical equipment, and bacterial recognition receptors. In response to this need, we have developed a paper-based fluorescence sensor array platform for identifying different bacteria. The sensor array is based on three unique carbon quantum dots (CQDs) as sensing units, each modified with a different antibiotic (polymyxin B, ampicillin, and gentamicin). These antibiotic-modified CQDs can aggregate on the bacterial surface, triggering aggregation-induced fluorescence quenching. The sensor array exhibits varying fluorescent responses to different bacterial species. To achieve low-cost and portable detection, CQDs were formulated into fluorescent ink and used with an inkjet printer to manufacture paper-based sensor arrays. A smartphone was used to collect the responses generated by the bacteria and platform. Diverse machine learning algorithms were utilized to discriminate bacterial types. Our findings showcase the platform's remarkable capability to differentiate among five bacterial strains, within a detection range spanning from 1.0 × 10 3  CFU/mL to 1.0 × 10 7  CFU/mL. Its practicality is further validated through the accurate identification of blind bacterial samples. China's pulp and paper industry (CPPI) has been always the main carbon emission source in recent years. However, the analysis on influencing factors of carbon emissions from this industry is insufficient. To address the issue, the CO 2 emissions from CPPI are estimated in the period of 2005-2019, the driving factors of CO 2 emissions are investigated by the logarithmic mean Divisia index (LMDI) method, the decoupling state of economic growth and CO 2 emissions is determined by Tapio decoupling model, and finally, future CO 2 emissions are predicted under four scenarios by the STIRPAT model to explore the potential of carbon peaking. The results show that CPPI exhibits a rapid increase and a fluctuating downward trend in CO 2 emissions during the period of 2005-2013 and 2014-2019, respectively. The main promoting and inhibiting factors to the increase of CO 2 emission are per capita industrial output value and energy intensity, respectively. There are five decoupling states of CO 2 emissions and economic growth during the study period, and the CO 2 emissions exhibit a weak decoupling state with the industrial output value growth in most years of the study period. It is very difficult to realize the carbon peaking goal by 2030 under the baseline and fast development scenarios. Therefore, efficient low carbon and strong low-carbon development policies are necessary and urgent for the realization of carbon peaking goal and the sustainable development of CPPI., (© 2023. Cellulose paper-based materials are highly flexible, hydrophilic, low-cost, and environmentally friendly and are good substrates for use as humidity sensors. Therefore, developing a paper-based humidity sensor with facile fabrication, low cost, and high sensitivity is important for expanding its practical applications. Herein, we propose a CI/FP self-powered humidity sensor based on everyday items such as writing and drawing carbon ink (CI), cellulose filter paper (FP), and polyester conductive adhesive tape, which is fabricated with the help of facile dip-coating and pasting methods. This sensor is self-powered, and the paper-based material itself can absorb water molecules in a humid environment to generate humidity-related voltage and current, which can indirectly reflect the ambient humidity level. They are characterized by a wide relative humidity (RH) sensing range (11-98%), good linearity ( R 2 = 0.97011), high response voltage (0.19 V), and excellent flexibility (over 1000 bends). This humidity sensor can be successfully applied to monitor human health (breathing, coughing), air humidity, and noncontact humidity sensing (skin, wet objects). This work not only proposes a low-cost and facile method for flexible humidity sensors but also provides a valuable strategy for the development of self-powered wearable electronics.

Microfluidic paper-based sensors as a new type of microsample detection technology are widely used in medical diagnosis, environmental monitoring, and food safety testing. Inkjet printing has the advantages of simplicity, speed, flexibility, high resolution, low cost, and efficient mass production and has become one of the most cutting-edge technologies in the manufacture of paper-based sensors. In this work, a fully inkjet printing preparation method was proposed for paper-based sensors, which can achieve high-precision, multichannel, and visual fluorescence detection. Three kinds of fluorescent carbon dots (CDs; r-CDs, b-CDs, and y-CDs) were fabricated into inkjet ink by adding a suitable ratio of solvent, PEG, and surfactant FS3100 to control its viscosity, surface tension, and other influencing factors, obtaining the best-visualized fluorescence response on paper. To optimize the full inkjet printing process of the paper-based sensor, we studied the influence of factors such as the hydrophobic material AKD formula, postprocessing conditions, and the structure of the hydrophilic and hydrophobic channels on the paper-based detection accuracy, and it was found that proper AKD concentration, curing time, and temperature can make AKD fully react with paper-based surface groups and produce more hydrophobic groups on the surface and inside of the filter paper, which can form paper-based microfluidic sensors with clear boundaries and fast transmission speed at low cost and high efficiency. The fabricated sensor is used for the fluorometric determination of vitamin C (AA), NO 2 - , and sunset yellow (SY) at the same time, and the limits of visual detection by eyes are 6 mmol/L (NO 2 - ), 60 μmol/L (SY), and 40 mmol/L (AA). The mechanism of inkjet printing is investigated in detail, which is simple, reliable, and easy to realize mass production and can realize highly sensitive, on-site, and visual detection for food additives.

Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) have been widely used for sterilization due to their broad-spectrum bactericidal properties. However, there exist the problems of premature releasing and accumulative toxicity when free AgNPs are applied. This study proposed a one-pot hydrothermal strategy to synthesize carbon spheres immobilized silver nanoparticles (AgNPs@CS). The synthesis involves with silver ammonia solution as Ag precursor, and corn stalk as green reducing agent and carbon precursor. Furthermore, AgNPs@CS was anchored by cellulose nanofibers (CNF) to obtain the antibacterial composite paper. The obtained CNF/AgNPs@CS paper exhibited superior antibacterial properties against E. coli and S. aureus. Notably, the accumulative release rate of AgNPs from AgNPs@CS was 10.2% in 9 days, while that from CNF/AgNPs@CS paper was only 6.7% due to the anchoring effect of both CS and CNF, which was low for avoiding the cumulative toxicity problem. In addition, the mechanical and barrier properties of CNF/AgNPs@CS paper were also improved by 29.4% (tensile index), 2.7% (tear index), 7.4% (burst index), 10% (folding endurance), 0.8% (water vapor transmission) and 9.4% (oxygen transmission rate), respectively. Paper-based carbon working electrodes were modified with mercury or bismuth films for the determination of trace metals in aqueous solutions. Both modification procedures were optimized in terms of selectivity and sensitivity for the determination of different heavy metals, aiming their simultaneous determination. Cd (II), Pb (II) and In (III) could be quantified with both films. However, Cu (II) could not be determined with bismuth films. The modification with mercury films led to the most sensitive method, with linear ranges between 0.1 and 10 µg/mL and limits of detection of 0.4, 0.1, 0.04 and 0.2 µg/mL for Cd (II), Pb (II), In (III) and Cu (II), respectively. Nevertheless, the bismuth film was a more sustainable alternative to mercury. Tap-water samples were analyzed for the determination of metals by standard addition methodology with good accuracy, by using a low-cost and easily disposable paper-based electrochemical platform. Paper Sensor detection methods are attractive in wide analytical applications. Presented herein is a paper sensor and fluorescence methods that was firstly developed to detect curcumin (Cur) based on fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) between nitrogen-doped carbon quantum dots (NCQDs) and Cur. The facile fluorescent method was demonstrated to detect Cur in the range of 0-2600 μM with a detection limit of 0.13 μM. And facile paper sensor of Cur was fabricated and displayed at concentration of 0 μM, 100 μM, 200 μM, 300 μM, 400 μM, 500 μM and 600 μM, respectively. In additions, it was realized for determination of Cur in real samples including orange juice and curry solution. Functional laser scribing carbon paper (LSCP) decorated with highly uniform Ni nanoparticles were constructed through a facile electroless plating. The nanocomposites were characterized by high resolution scanning electron microscope, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry. The results showed high electron transferring kinetics of this sensor, which can be ascribed to their excellent properties such as rich pore channels, excellent structural durability, and large surface area. These properties facilitated mass transfer and electron conductions. Notably, a systematical response surface methodology simulating-modeling-predicting-optimizing design was employed to simulate, model and optimize processing parameters to gain the optimal conductivity of 8.52 × 10 6  S m -1 . The obtained sensor owned high electrochemical activity and wide linear responses (0.80 μM-2.50 mM and 4.50 mM-15.20 mM), low detection limit of 20 nM (S/N = 3) to the glucose detection. The glucose determination in human serum and perspiration samples are also successful. Herein, an easy and effective ratiometric fluorescent nanoprobe for the selective detection of Pb2+ and pyrophosphate (PPi) was developed based on label-free carbon dots (CDs). The CDs showed dual emission bands at 477 and 651 nm under a single-wavelength excitation (391 nm). Pb2+ and PPi were sequentially detected by the sensor with high reliability and accuracy via the exploitation of the fluorescence intensity ratio (F477/F651). The dual emission sensor exhibited high selectivity and excellent sensitivity for Pb2+ and PPi than for other analytes with detection limits as low as 0.055 μM and 0.089 μM, respectively. Moreover, the fluorescent CDs changed from pink to cyan and from cyan to pink and could be used as a fluorescent paper sensor for the visual detection of Pb2+ and PPi. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report on the ratiometric fluorescence detection of Pb2+ and PPi by CDs; therefore, the as-synthesized CDs show great potential for application in the determination of Pb2+ and PPi in real samples.

Traditional fingerprints are usually obtained by pressing an inked finger on a paper. The inks would contaminate fingers and more importantly, these fingerprints are visible and able to be photocopied. In order to develop a smart membrane for fingerprint recording and document security, microrod assemblies of carbon quantum dots (CQDs)-Eu (III) are embedded in a electrospun nanofibrous (NFs) membrane which has strong red emission under UV irradiation owing to aggregation induced Dexter energy transfer from CQDs to Eu (III) ions. A clear blue emission fingerprint could be recorded on the membrane after a finger touch because the phosphate (Pi) secreted through sweat glands blocks the solid-state Dexter energy transfer, recovering the UV-irradiated blue emissions of CQDs. The Pi-based fingerprint on the membrane, which is invisible under daylight and could not be photocopied, greatly improves the security of the fingerprint and, furthermore, has the capability to identify the people who touched the secret document through the fingerprint analysis, showing that the intelligent NFs membrane can be applied for both fingerprint security and document counterspy.

This article describes a method for the modification of paper with single-wall carbon nanohorns (SWCNHs) to form stable suprastructures. The SWCNHs form stable dahlia-like aggregates in solution that are then self-assembled into superior structures if the solvent is evaporated. Dipping paper sections into a dispersion of SWCNHs leads to the formation of a thin film that can be used for microextraction purposes. The coated paper can be easily handled with a simple pipette tip, paving the way for disposable extraction units. As a proof of concept, the extraction of antidepressants from urine and their determination by direct infusion mass spectrometry is studied. Limits of detection (LODs) were 10 ng/L for desipramine, amitriptyline, and mianserin, while the precision, expressed as a relative standard deviation, was 7.2%, 7.3%, and 9.8%, respectively.

We explored the use of filter paper soaked in whole blood for measuring carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) stable isotopes, often used in feeding ecology or diet studies, to better understand drivers of exposure to contaminants. Our results showed no statistically or biologically relevant differences in C and N stable isotope measures between our gold standard (whole blood with anticoagulant) and eluates from processed, blood-soaked filter paper. Our data supported the effectiveness of using filter paper for assessing C and N stable isotopes in blood to address feeding ecology and other uses. The ease of sampling and processing should allow blood-soaked filter paper to be used in sampling of live (e.g., captured, stranded) and lethally taken (e.g., hunter-killed) wild vertebrates.

Highly selective and sensitive detection of guanosine 3'-diphosphate-5'-diphosphate (ppGpp), namely, the stringent in plants or microorganisms responding to strict or extreme environmental conditions such as stress and starvation, which plays an important role in gene expression, rRNA and antibiotics production, regulations of virulence of bacteria, and growth of plants, faces a great challenge owing to its extreme similarity to normal nucleotides. By modifying the surface groups of a facile two-step hydrothermal route prepared carbon dots (CDs) with terbium ions (Tb 3+ ) in this contribution, a novel fluorescent probe with excellent properties such as highly physical and chemical stability, narrow emission and excitation wavelength-independent emission was prepared. The Tb 3+ ions on the surface of CDs cannot only preserve the intrinsic fluorescence (FL) of CDs but also keep its own coordination capacity with rare earth complex, and thus the clamp structure (four phosphate groups) of ppGpp can specific binding with Tb 3+ ions on the surface of CDs to produce antenna effect. Therefore, a highly selective and sensitive fluorescent ratiometry of ppGpp was developed by terbium-modified carbon dots (CDs-Tb) with the limit of detection as low as 50 nM based on the synergistic effect of antenna effect of Tb 3+ ions and specific recognition capacity of CDs. The applicability of this assay was demonstrated by CDs-Tb-based paper sensor for high distinguishing ppGpp from other nucleotides with similar structure.

In this work, carbon papers and aerogels based on graphene layers and chitosan were prepared. They were obtained by mixing chitosan (CS) and a high surface area nanosized graphite (HSAG) in water in the presence of acetic acid. HSAG/CS water dispersions were stable for months. High resolution transmission electron microscopy revealed the presence of few graphene layers in water suspensions. Casting or lyophilization of such suspensions led to the preparation of carbon paper and aerogel, respectively. In X-ray spectra of both aerogels and carbon paper, peaks due to regular stacks of graphene layers were not detected: graphene with unaltered sp 2 structure was obtained directly from graphite without the use of any chemical reaction. The composites were demonstrated to be electrically conductive thanks to the graphene. Chitosan thus makes it possible to obtain monolithic carbon aerogels and flexible and free-standing graphene papers directly from a nanosized graphite by avoiding oxidation to graphite oxide and successive reduction. Strong interaction between polycationic chitosan and the aromatic substrate appears to be at the origin of the stability of HSAG/CS adducts. Cation-π interaction is hypothesized, also on the basis of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy findings. This work paves the way for the easy large-scale preparation of carbon papers through a method that has a low environmental impact and is based on a biosourced polymer, graphene, and water.

Herein, an environment friendly paper-based biobattery is demonstrated that yields a power of 12.5W/m 3 . Whatman filter papers were used not only as support for electrode fabrication but also as separator of the biobattery. To provide electrical conductivity to the paper-based cathode and anode, commercially available eyeliner containing carbon nanoparticles and Fe 3 O 4 was directly employed as conductive ink without any binder. With an instant start-up, the as-fabricated biocompatible electrodes could hold bacteria in an active form at the anode allowing chemical oxidation of organic fuel producing current. This paper describes the development of simple, sustainable, and low-cost strategies for signal enhancement on paper-based carbon platforms through gold nanoparticles electrogenerated from small volumes of tetrachloroauric (III) acid solutions. Carbon ink is deposited on a hydrophilic working area of the paper delimited with hydrophobic wax. This maskless procedure is fast and cuts down ink waste. The connection of this working electrode to the potentiostat is ensured with the use of screen-printed electrodes (SPEs). Close contact of the whole area of both carbon electrodes improves the precision of the nanostructuration. Resulting gold-modified paper-based carbon working electrodes (AuNPs-PCWEs) were characterized by cyclic voltammetry (CV), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and electron dispersion X-ray spectrometry (SEM/EDX). This methodology was applied for the first time to the inorganic arsenic determination in commercial white wines by chronoamperometric stripping of the electrodeposited As(0). In an optimized system, As(III) was reduced and deposited as As(0) on the nanostructured surface by applying a potential of -0.3 V during 180 s. Then, anodic stripping chronoamperometry was performed at +0.4 V. The analytical signal was the current recorded at 30 s. On the other hand, As(V) was chemically reduced to As(III) with 0.2 M KI, and total determination of arsenic could be carried out. As(V) was determined as the difference between total As and As(III). Then, this fast, simple and low-cost method can be employed for speciation purposes. Limits of detection for As(III) and total arsenic (in the presence of KI) are 2.2 μg L -1 and 2.4 μg L -1 , respectively, and indicate that this method is suitable for regulated quality control.

Pulp and paper industry produces massive amounts of sludge from wastewater treatment, which constitute an enormous environmental challenge. A possible management option is the conversion of sludge into carbon-based adsorbents to be applied in water remediation. For such utilization it is important to investigate if sludge is a consistent raw material originating reproducible final materials (either over time or from different manufacturing processes), which is the main goal of this work. For that purpose, different primary (PS) and biological sludge (BS) batches from two factories with different operation modes were sampled and subjected to pyrolysis (P materials) and to pyrolysis followed by acid washing (PW materials). All the materials were characterized by proximate analysis, total organic carbon (TOC) and inorganic carbon (IC), attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) and N 2 adsorption isotherms (specific surface area (S BET )and porosity determination). Sludge from the two factories proved to have distinct physicochemical properties, mainly in what concerns IC. After pyrolysis, the washing step was essential to reduce IC and to considerably increase S BET , yet with high impact in the final production yield. Among the materials here produced, PW materials from PS were those having the highest S BET values (387-488 m 2  g -1 ). Overall, it was found that precursors from different factories might originate final materials with distinct characteristics, being essential to take into account this source of variability when considering paper mill sludge as a raw material. Though microfluidic paper analytical devices (μPADs) have attracted paramounting attentions in recent years as promising devices for low cost point-of-care tests, their real applications for blood analysis are still challenged by integrating sample preparation with different detection modes on a same μPAD. Herein, we developed a novel μPAD, which well coupled automatic serum extraction with reliable dual mode iron health tests: fluorescent analysis for Fe 3+ and colorimetric ELISA for ferritin. All these functions are made available by in situ carbon dots (CDs) and AuNPs sequential patterning techniques. For CDs immobilization, hydrothermal reaction was taken on paper, to which a patterned through-hole polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) mask was applied. None fluorescence CDs (nF-CDs) were generated on exposed regions, while the fluorescent CDs (F-CDs) were generated simultaneously on covered regions. Sensitive serum iron quantification was realized on the F-CDs modified regions, where Fe 3+ ion can selectively quench the fluorescence of F-CDs. For AuNPs immobilization, electroless plating was taken on nF-CDs modified regions. The resulting AuNPs on nF-CDs layer on one hand triggered the coagulation of blood cells and thus led to the longest ever wicking distance for serum separation, on the other hand facilitated colorimetric enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for detection of serum ferritin. Combining the two readings, the μPAD can provide reliable measurement for serum iron and serum ferritin in whole blood. Furthermore, as CDs and AuNPs modified μPAD has the features of easy handling, low-cost, lightweight, and disposability, it is accounting for a promising prototype for whole blood point-of-care analysis.

Glutathione is an important antioxidant found in body fluids and tissues, which inhibit damage to essential cellular constituents caused by reactive oxygen species. The analysis of glutathione levels in biological systems is important in early clinical diagnosis. A novel, cost-effective synthetic strategy has been developed for the fluorescent probe ethylenediamine passivated carbon dots. Tissue paper was chosen as the carbon source for this "green one pot" synthesis. Glutathione could induce quenching of the fluorescence intensity of ethylenediamine passivated carbon dots through surface interactions, resulting from their aggregation. Based on this, a novel fluorescence sensor was fabricated for the determination of Glutathione in body fluids. A linear calibration graph was obtained in the range of 6.0 × 10 -7 to 5.0 × 10 -8 M with a detection limit of 1.74 × 10 -9 M. The developed sensor was successfully used for the determination of glutathione in artificial saliva samples.

The main objective of the present study was to determine the optimum C/N ratio for converting waste paper and chicken manure to nutrient-rich manure with minimum toxicity. Six treatments of C/N ratio 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, and 70 (T1, T2, T3, T4, T5, and T6, respectively) achieved by mixing chicken manure with shredded paper were used. The study involved a composting stage for 20 days followed by vermicomposting with Eisenia fetida for 7 weeks. The results revealed that 20 days of composting considerably degraded the organic waste mixtures from all treatments and a further 7 weeks of vermiculture significantly improved the bioconversion and nutrient value of all treatments. The C/N ratio of 40 (T3) resulted in the best quality vermicompost compared to the other treatments. Earthworm biomass was highest at T3 and T4 possibly due to a greater reduction of toxic substances in these waste mixtures. The total N, total P, and total K concentrations increased with time while total carbon, C/N ratio, electrical conductivity (EC), and heavy metal content gradually decreased with time during the vermicomposting process. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed the intrastructural degradation of the chicken manure and shredded paper matrix which confirmed the extent of biodegradation of treatment mixtures as result of the composting and vermicomposting processes. Phytotoxicity evaluation of final vermicomposts using tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum), radish (Raphanus sativus), carrot (Daucus carota), and onion (Allium cepa) as test crops showed the non-phytotoxicity of the vermicomposts to be in the order T3 > T4 > T2 > T1 > T5 > T6. Generally, the results indicated that the combination of composting and vermicomposting processes is a good strategy for the management of chicken manure/paper waste mixtures and that the ideal C/N ratio of the waste mixture is 40 (T3).

In this study, five typical municipal solid waste (MSW) components (tyres, cardboard, polyvinyl chloride (PVC), acrylic textile, toilet paper) were used as raw materials to prepare four kinds of MSW-based carbon materials (paperboard-based carbon materials (AC1); the tyres and paperboard-based carbon materials (AC2); the tyres, paperboard and PVC-based carbon materials (AC3); the tyres, paperboard, toilet paper, PVC and acrylic textile-based carbon materials (AC4)) by the KOH activation method. The characteristic results illustrate that the prepared carbon adsorbents exhibited a large pore volume, high surface area and sufficient oxygen functional groups. Furthermore, the application of AC1, AC2, AC3, AC4 on different heavy metal (Cu(2+), Zn(2+), Pb(2+), Cr(3+)) removals was explored to investigate their adsorption properties. The effects of reaction time, pH, temperature and adsorbent dosage on the adsorption capability of heavy metals were investigated. Comparisons of heavy metal adsorption on carbon of different components were carried out. Among the four samples, AC1 exhibits the highest adsorption capacity for Cu(2+); the highest adsorption capacities of Pb(2+) and Zn(2+) are obtained for AC2; that of Cr(3+) are obtained for AC4. Carbon-based aerogel fabricated from waste biomass is a potential absorbent material for solving organic pollution. Herein, the lightweight, hydrophobic and porous carbon aerogels (CAs) have been synthesized through freezing-drying and post-pyrolysis by using waste newspaper as the only raw materials. The as-prepared CAs exhibited a low density of 18.5 mg cm(-3) and excellent hydrophobicity with a water contact angle of 132° and selective absorption for organic reagents. The absorption capacity of CA for organic compounds can be 29-51 times its own weight. Moreover, three methods (e.g., squeezing, combustion, and distillation) can be employed to recycle CA and harvest organic pollutants. Combined with waste biomass as raw materials, green and facile fabrication process, excellent hydrophobicity and oleophilicity, CA used as an absorbent material has great potential in application of organic pollutant solvents absorption and environmental protection., (Copyright © 2015 Elsevier Ltd. Mixed sludge from a pulp and paper mill was hydrothermally carbonized at 180-260°C for 0.5-5h with the use of HCl or NaOH for determining the effect of acid and base additions during sludge carbonization. Based on the results carbonization was mainly governed by dehydration, depolymerization and decarboxylation of sludge components. Additive type had a statistically significant effect on hydrochar carbon content and carbon and energy yield, of which especially energy yield increased through the use of HCl. The theoretical energy efficiencies of carbonization increased with decreasing reaction temperature, retention time and the use of HCl and suggested that the energy requirement could be covered by the energy content of attained hydrochar. Recycling hazardous wastes to produce value-added products is becoming essential for the sustainable progress of our society. Herein, highly porous carbon (1625 m(2)  g(-1)) is synthesized using waste tires as the precursor and used as a supercapacitor electrode material. The narrow pore-size distribution and high surface area led to good charge storage capacity, especially when used as a three-dimensional nanoscaffold to polymerize polyaniline (PANI). The composite paper was highly flexible, conductive, and exhibited a capacitance of 480 F g(-1) at 1 mV s(-1) with excellent capacitance retention of up to 98% after 10,000 charge/discharge cycles. The high capacitance and long cycle life were ascribed to the short diffusional paths, uniform PANI coating, and tight confinement of the PANI in the inner pores of the tire-derived carbon through π-π interactions, which minimized the degradation of the PANI upon cycling. We anticipate that the same strategy can be applied to deposit other pseudocapacitive materials to achieve even higher electrochemical performance and longer cycle life-a key challenge for redox active polymers., (© 2015 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Mulberry pulp and paper mills produce high chemical- and organic matter containing waste water in Thailand. Many of the mills are not equipped with wastewater treatment unit; their untreated effluent is directly discharged into recipient water resources. The effluent constituents are well recognized as acute and chronic pollutants that are hazardous to the environment. The present study aimed to investigate the utilization of an activated carbon from a low-cost material and to examine its adsorption performance using batch and fixed-bed adsorption. Water hyacinth was used as a raw material for activated carbon production via a chemical activation method. The results showed that water hyacinth-based activated carbon (WHAC) provided a high surface area of 912-1,066 m2g(-1) and exhibited micropore structure. Based on the Freundlich fit, the maximum adsorption capacity of COD and color was 4.52 mgg(-1) and 13.57 Pt-Cog(-1), respectively. The fixed bed adsorption provided maximum removal efficiency of 91.70 and 92.62% for COD and color, respectively. A continuous adsorption data agreed well with the Thomas kinetic model. In summary, water hyacinth can be used as a low-cost material for activated carbon production with high removal efficiency of COD and color for pulp and paper mill wastewater treatment.

In this work, we developed a cascade signal amplification strategy for detection of IgG antigen by combining the rolling circle amplification (RCA) technique with oligonucleotide functionalized carbon dots (CDs), based on a paper-based electrochemiluminescence (ECL) origami device (PECLOD) for the first time. In this PECLOD, three-dimensional (3D) macroporous Au-paper electrode was fabricated and employed as the working electrode for specific and efficient antibodies capture. The RCA product containing tandem-repeat sequences could serve as an excellent template for periodic assembly of CDs, which presented per protein recognition event to numerous CDs tags for ECL readout. Under the optimal conditions, the proposed strategy showed remarkable amplification efficiency, very little nonspecific adsorption with good stability, reproducibility, and accuracy. Using human IgG (H-IgG) as a model protein, the designed strategy was successfully demonstrated for the ultrasensitive detection of protein target. The results revealed that the strategy exhibited a dynamic response to H-IgG range from 1.0 fM to 25 pM with a limit of detection as low as 0.15 fM. The dissolution of noble-metal catalysts under mild and carbon-preserving conditions offers the possibility of in situ regeneration of the catalyst nanoparticles in fuel cells or other applications. Here, we report on the complete dissolution of the fuel cell catalyst, platinum nanoparticles, under very mild conditions at room temperature in 0.1 M HClO4 and 0.1 M HCl by electrochemical potential cycling between 0.5-1.1 V at a scan rate of 50 mV s(-1) . Dissolution rates as high as 22.5 μg cm(-2) per cycle were achieved, which ensured a relatively short dissolution timescale of 3-5 h for a Pt loading of 0.35 mg cm(-2) on carbon. The influence of chloride ions and oxygen in the electrolyte on the dissolution was investigated, and a dissolution mechanism is proposed on the basis of the experimental observations and available literature results. Mechanical abrasion is an extremely simple, rapid, and low-cost method for deposition of carbon-based materials onto a substrate. However, the method is limited in throughput, precision, and surface compatibility for drawing conductive pathways. Selective patterning of surfaces using laser-etching can facilitate substantial improvements to address these current limitations for the abrasive deposition of carbon-based materials. This study demonstrates the successful on-demand fabrication of fully-drawn chemical sensors on a wide variety of substrates (e.g., weighing paper, polymethyl methacrylate, silicon, and adhesive tape) using single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) as sensing materials and graphite as electrodes. Mechanical mixing of SWCNTs with solid or liquid selectors yields sensors that can detect and discriminate parts-per-million (ppm) quantities of various nitrogen-containing vapors (pyridine, aniline, triethylamine).

In this paper, the use of powered activated carbon (PAC) in membrane bioreactor (MBR) employed in the treatment of bleach pulp mill effluents was evaluated. The MBR was operated with hydraulic residence time of 9.5 h and PAC concentration of 10 g/L. The addition of PAC to the MBR reduced the average concentration of chemical oxygen demand (COD) in the permeate from 215 mg/L (82% removal efficiency) to 135 mg/L (88% removal efficiency), producing an effluent that can be reused on bleaching stage. Moreover, the addition of PAC to the MBR resulted in the reduction in applied pressure and provided a more stable operation during the monitoring period. This occurrence was probably due to the increase of critical flux after the addition of PAC. The fouling mechanism was investigated and the results showed that controlling the concentration of soluble microbial products (SMP) and extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) by using PAC and keeping the operational flux below critical flux is of major importance for MBR operational sustainability.

This work describes the production of alternative adsorbents from industrial residues and their application for the removal of a highly consumed antidepressant (citalopram) from water. The adsorbents were produced by pyrolysis of both primary and biological paper mill sludge at different temperatures and residence times. The original sludge and the produced chars were fully characterized by elemental and proximate analyses, total organic carbon, specific surface area (BET), N₂ isotherms, FTIR, (13)C and (1)H solid state NMR and SEM. Batch kinetic and equilibrium experiments were carried out to describe the adsorption of citalopram onto the produced materials. The fastest kinetics and the highest adsorption capacity were obtained using primary sludge pyrolysed at 800 °C during 150 min. The use of pyrolysed paper mill sludge for the remediation of contaminated waters might constitute an interesting application for the valorization of those wastes., (Copyright © 2014 Elsevier Ltd. We demonstrate a flexible paper-based biofuel cell using porous carbon inks for high power output. The power density of the fabricated biofuel cell reached 0.12 mW cm(-2) (at 0.4 V), which is the highest output power reported to date, to the best of our knowledge.

Low cost disposable working electrodes are specifically desired for practical applications of electrochemical detection considering maturity of electrochemical stations and data collection protocols. In this paper double-sided conductive adhesive carbon tape with nanostructure was applied to fabricate disposable working electrodes. Being supported by indium tin oxide glass, the prepared carbon tape electrodes were coated with bismuth film for stripping analysis of heavy metal ions. By integrating the bismuth modified electrodes with paper-based analytical devices, we were able to differentiate Zn, Cd and Pb ions with the sample volume of around 15 μL. After the optimization of parameters, including modification of bismuth film and the area of the electrodes, etc., Pb ions could be measured in the linear range from 10 to 500 μg/L with the detection limit of 2 μg/L. Our experimental results revealed that the disposable modified electrodes could be used to quantify migrated lead from toys with the results agreed well with that using atomic absorption spectrometry. Although bismuth modification and stripping analysis could be influenced by the low conductivity of the carbon tape, the low cost disposable carbon tape electrodes take the advantages of large-scaled produced double-sided carbon tape, including its reproducible nanostructure and scaled-up fabrication process. In addition, the preparation of disposable electrodes avoids time-consuming pretreatment and experienced operation. A simple and sensitive 3D origami multiple electrochemiluminescence immunodevice based on a novel silver nanoparticles modified porous paper working electrode as a sensor platform and multi-labeled nanoporous gold-carbon spheres as tracers has been demonstrated for the first time.

The stability of biochar carbon (C) is the major determinant of its value for long-term C sequestration in soil. A long-term (5 year) laboratory experiment was conducted under controlled conditions using 11 biochars made from five C3 biomass feedstocks (Eucalyptus saligna wood and leaves, papermill sludge, poultry litter, cow manure) at 400 and/or 550 °C. The biochars were incubated in a vertisol containing organic C from a predominantly C4-vegetation source, and total CO(2)-C and associated δ(13)C were periodically measured. Between 0.5% and 8.9% of the biochar C was mineralized over 5 years. The C in manure-based biochars mineralized faster than that in plant-based biochars, and C in 400 °C biochars mineralized faster than that in corresponding 550 °C biochars. The estimated mean residence time (MRT) of C in biochars varied between 90 and 1600 years. These are conservative estimates because they represent MRT of relatively labile and intermediate-stability biochar C components. Furthermore, biochar C MRT is likely to be higher under field conditions of lower moisture, lower temperatures or nutrient availability constraints. Strong relationships of biochar C stability with the initial proportion of nonaromatic C and degree of aromatic C condensation in biochar support the use of these properties to predict biochar C stability in soil.

Microbial fuel cells (MFC) provide a new opportunity for simultaneous electricity generation and waste treatment. An improvement in the anode capacity of MFCs is essential for their scale-up and commercialization. In this work we demonstrate, for the first time, that plasma-based ion implantation could be used as an effective approach to modify carbon paper as an anode for MFC to improve its electricity-generating capacity. After the N(+) ion implantation, a decreased charge-transfer resistance is achieved, which is attributed to the increased C-N bonds after N(+) ion implantation. In addition, the surface roughness and hydrophobicity are also changed, which favor microbial adhesion on the anode surface. The cyclic voltammetry results show that both the electrochemical activity and the electron transfer are enhanced remarkably, leading to better MFC performance compared to the control. Such a plasma surface modification technique provides an effective way to modify the electrode for enhancing MFC performance for power generation.

Stable and sensitive electrochemiluminescence (ECL) detection relies on successful immobilization of quantum dots (QDs) on working electrodes. Herein, we report a new technique to apply double-sided carbon adhesive tape as the working electrode to improve the stability and reproducibility of QD-based ECL emission. CdS QD-modified electrodes were prepared by dropping and drying CdS QD suspension on the carbon adhesive tape supported by indium tin oxide (ITO) glass. The ECL detection was performed with the prepared electrode on a paper-based platform. We tested our system using H(2)O(2) of various concentrations and demonstrated that consistent ECL emission could be obtained. We attribute stable and reproducible ECL emission to the robust attachment of CdS QDs on the carbon adhesive tape. The proposed method could be used to quantify the concentration of dopamine from 1 μM to 10 mM based on the quenching effect of dopamine on ECL emission of CdS QD system using H(2)O(2) as the coreactant. Our approach addressed the problem in the integration of stable QD-based ECL detection with portable paper-based analytical devices. The similar design offers great potential for low-cost electrochemical and ECL analytical instruments.

Enzymatic biofuel cells (BFC) have a great potential as a small power source, but their practical applications are being hampered by short lifetime and low power density. This study describes the direct immobilization of glucose oxidase (GOx) onto the carbon paper in the form of highly stable and active enzyme precipitation coatings (EPCs), which can improve the lifetime and power density of BFCs. EPCs were fabricated directly onto the carbon paper via a three-step process: covalent attachment (CA), enzyme precipitation, and chemical crosslinking. GOx-immobilized carbon papers via the CA and EPC approaches were used as an enzyme anode and their electrochemical activities were tested under the BFC-operating mode. The BFCs with CA and EPC enzyme anodes produced the maximum power densities of 50 and 250 µW/cm(2) , respectively. The BFC with the EPC enzyme anode showed a stable current density output of >700 µA/cm(2) at 0.18 V under continuous operation for over 45 h. When a maple syrup was used as a fuel under ambient conditions, it also produced a stable current density of >10 µA/cm(2) at 0.18 V for over 25 h. It is anticipated that the direct immobilization of EPC on hierarchical-structured electrodes with a large surface area would further improve the power density of BFCs that can make their applications more feasible., (Copyright © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.)

We present a high-capacity pseudocapacitor based on a hierarchical network architecture consisting of Co(3)O(4) nanowire network (nanonet) coated on a carbon fiber paper. With this tailored architecture, the electrode shows ideal capacitive behavior (rectangular shape of cyclic voltammograms) and large specific capacitance (1124 F/g) at high charge/discharge rate (25.34 A/g), still retaining ~94% of the capacitance at a much lower rate of 0.25 A/g. The much-improved capacity, rate capability, and cycling stability may be attributed to the unique hierarchical network structures, which improves electron/ion transport, enhances the kinetics of redox reactions, and facilitates facile stress relaxation during cycling., (© 2011 American Chemical Society)

Properties improvement of paper mill sludge (PMS) based granular activated carbon fillers for fluidized-bed bioreactor (FBBR) was investigated in this study. Bentonite (Na) powders were blended in the dewatered paper mill sludge powders to strengthen the abrasion resistance strength of the fillers. Different acid washing treatments were studied to produce FBBR fillers with optimum performance. The results indicated that granulation was easy and the abrasion resistance strength of the fillers increased by 15% with 8 wt% of bentonite (Na) added. Acid washing treatment prior to activation had a better effect on the removal of Fe than post-activation acid washing treatment. HCl was the most appropriate acid during the acid washing treatment. The optimum acid washing treatment was carried out prior to activation with 2M HCl soaking for 6h. The management of dewatered wastewater sludge is a major issue worldwide. Sludge disposal to landfills is not sustainable and thus alternative treatment techniques are being sought. The objective of this work was to determine optimal mixing ratios of dewatered sludge with other organic amendments in order to maximize the degradability of the mixtures during composting. This objective was achieved using mixture experimental design principles. An additional objective was to study the impact of the initial C/N ratio and moisture contents on the co-composting process of dewatered sludge. The composting process was monitored through measurements of O(2) uptake rates, CO(2) evolution, temperature profile and solids reduction. Eight (8) runs were performed in 100 L insulated air-tight bioreactors under a dynamic air flow regime. The initial mixtures were prepared using dewatered wastewater sludge, mixed paper wastes, food wastes, tree branches and sawdust at various initial C/N ratios and moisture contents. According to empirical modeling, mixtures of sludge and food waste mixtures at 1:1 ratio (ww, wet weight) maximize degradability. Structural amendments should be maintained below 30% to reach thermophilic temperatures. The initial C/N ratio and initial moisture content of the mixture were not found to influence the decomposition process. The bio C/bio N ratio started from around 10, for all runs, decreased during the middle of the process and increased to up to 20 at the end of the process. The solid carbon reduction of the mixtures without the branches ranged from 28% to 62%, whilst solid N reductions ranged from 30% to 63%. Carbon fiber paper (CFP), a material frequently used as the diffusion layer in fuel cells, was found recently to exhibit a potential as an electrode for the development of sensitive, unmediated biosensors. After nitrogen plasma treatment, the CFP exhibited a quasi-reversible behavior to the redox couple (e.g., ferricyanide) with an electron transfer rate constant of 7.2 × 10(-3)cms(-1). This rate constant is approximately double that of a Pt-electrode and is much higher than that of many carbon-based electrodes. The unmediated CFP-based tyrosinase biosensor fabricated for this study exhibited an optimal working potential and operating pH value of -0.2V and 6.5, respectively. Compared to other unmediated tyrosinase biosensors, the CFP-based tyrosinase biosensor offers a high sensitivity for the monitoring of phenolic compounds (17.8, 7.1, 5.2 and 3.7 μA μM(-1)cm(-2) for catechol, phenol, bisphenol and 3-aminophenol, respectively). The lowest detection limit for catechol, phenol, bisphenol and 3-aminophenol was 2, 5, 5 and 12 nM, respectively. The goal of this study is to evaluate the feasibility of PHA biosynthesis from kraft mill effluent using the batch system evaluating the biomass origin and C:N relationship influence. To evaluate feasibility, batch assays were carried out. Also, two levels of the BOD5:N:P relationship (100:5:1 and 100:1:0.2) and three different sludge origins were considered. Inocula were obtained from activated sludge treatment plants for a) sewage (SAS), b) paper mill (PAS) and c) kraft (KAS). The results show that the maximum Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD5) and Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) removal was 80.5% and 59.7% respectively using KAS as inoculum. In these assays, kinetics constants were 17.9±3.2 mg L(-1) and 46.5±1.2 d(-1) for (KCOD) and (rmax), respectively under a BOD5:N:P relationship of 100:5:1. The maximum PHA accumulation was obtained under a BOD5:N:P relationship of 100:1:0.2 on the third day of batch assays using PAS sludge with 25.72% of the cells accumulating PHA and on the fifth day in batch using SAS and KAS sludge with 25.85% and 30.40% of cells accumulating PHA, respectively. Yields obtained for the 100:1:0.2 relationships ranged from 0.10-0.14 mg PHA mg(-1) COD.

Hydrophobic coatings on carbon paper electrodes are known to provide effective water management, superior gas transfer, and improved mechanical stability of the paper in fuel cell applications. Here, we describe the surface-initiated ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) of 5-(perfluorohexyl)norbornene (NBF6) to prepare fluorocarbon-rich films on carbon paper substrates that were pre-treated with O(2) plasma. For our reaction scheme, the growth of the pNBF6 films is dependent on the concentration of hydroxyl groups on the carbon paper substrate. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used to determine the required time for O(2) plasma exposure to saturate the surface with hydroxyl-termini. Complete, conformal pNBF6 films were grown on carbon paper electrodes exposed to O(2) plasma for at least 45 s. These films exhibit hydrophobic and oleophobic surface properties and serve as insulative barriers to the diffusion of aqueous ions to the conductive carbon fibers., (Copyright 2010 Elsevier Inc. Gold is among the highly conductive and stable materials, which are ideal anodes for microbial fuel cells (MFCs). However, previous studies have shown that bare gold surface is recalcitrant for the colonization of some exoelectrogens, e.g., Shewanella putrefacians. In this work, the problem regarding the poor bio-compatibility of gold as an anode material was sorted out through coupling it with carbon paper. A new composite anode material was fabricated through sputtering gold layer homogeneously on carbon paper matrix. Results of cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy in Fe(CN)6(3-/4-) solution demonstrated better electrochemical performance of the carbon paper-gold (C-Au) composite than either carbon paper or bare gold, when they were used in MFCs. With Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 as the inoculum, the C-Au anode-based MFC produced total electric charges higher than the carbon-paper-anode-based MFC by 47%. The cyclic voltammetry analysis and the scanning electron microscopy observation showed that the MR-1 biofilm growth was accelerated when the carbon paper surface was sputtered with gold. Potentio-dynamic polymerization of buffered urease and pyrrole monomer onto carbon papers was conducted to fabricate an immobilized urease electrode for measuring the urea concentration. To use carbon paper as the substrate for the electro-growth of polypyrrole matrix not only created sufficient adhesion of the conducting polymer layer but also provided superior entrapment of urease enzymes. The potentiometric response corresponding to ammonia, the product formed from the urease catalyzed urea reaction, was employed for the urea concentration measurement. Scanning electron microscopic photographs showed that the polypyrrole matrix deposited on the carbon papers appeared to be of a cylindrical nanotube shape. The charge density applied in the polymerization was found to affect the potentiometric response while the potential-scanning rate showed minor influence. The composite electrodes had high sensitivity in urea detection, showing a response linear to the logarithm of the urea concentration in the range of 10(-3) to 10 mM. The detection of urea solution prepared in water and buffer was also compared. Ionic effect on the sensing of urea solution was investigated. By comparing the data reported in literature, the urease/polypyrrole/carbon paper electrode developed in this work showed superior long-term stability and reusability. The detection of urea in serum was also well performed.

Forty-one bacterial strains isolated from the headbox water of two machines in a Canadian paper mill were associated with the genera Asticcacaulis, Acidovorax, Bacillus, Exiguobacterium, Hydrogenophaga, Pseudomonas, Pseudoxanthomonas, Staphylococcus, Stenotrophomonas based on the sequence of their 16S rRNA genes. The metabolic profile of these strains were determined using Biolog EcoPlate, and the bacteria were divided into four metabolic groups. Metabolic profiles of the bacterial communities colonizing the headbox water of two paper machines was also determined weekly over a 1 year period. The only compound that was not reduced by the bacterial community was 2-hydroxybenzoic acid. Utilization frequency of the other carbon sources in the Biolog EcoPlate ranged from 3 to 100%. The metabolic profiles of the bacterial community did not vary considerably between the two paper machines. However, the metabolic profile varied among the sampling dates.
