Peach production in China uses large inputs of mineral fertilizers but lower inputs of organic fertilizers, resulting in decreased peach quality and increased environmental risks. This study investigated the effects of formula fertilizers (combined organic and inorganic fertilizers) on peach yield, quality, and carbon and nitrogen footprints using three peach cultivars in two consecutive years. Two types of formula fertilizers had positive effects on improving the peach yield (5.6–13.6%), single fruit weight (9.0–32.5%), transverse diameter (3.6–13%) and longitudinal diameter (5.4–21.6%). Also, these fertilizers increased soluble solids (7.2–36.6%) and vitamin C (7.1–78%). In addition, the carbon footprint of peach decreased by 37–49%. Because residues of chlorpyrifos being the most common in vegetables that are generally consumed uncooked and the demand for healthy vegetables has increased, an effective approach to remove these residues from vegetables is necessary. This study aimed to determine how effectively chlorpyrifos residues could be removed from a variety of vegetables by utilizing low concentrations of ozonated water as a green technology over different contact times. Solid-phase extraction was employed, and then residues were analyzed using GC‒MS. The study illustrated that the initial concentration of chlorpyrifos residues in arugula > parsley > leek > tomato > carrot > cucumber > cabbage > bell pepper. The % chlorpyrifos removal ranged 30–83, 91–97, 80–92, 92–95, 87–97, 95–97, 64–100, and 90–97% for bell pepper, tomato, cucumber, carrot, arugula, parsley, cabbage, and leek, respectively. A first-order kinetic model was assumed to explore the removal of chlorpyrifos and degradation rate constants increased as follows: parsley > carrot ≈ leek > arugula > tomato > cucumber > cabbage > bell pepper, with the absence of the chlorpyrifos-oxon which is more toxic than the parent chlorpyrifos after ozone treatments. Importantly, the use of ozonated water for chlorpyrifos removal had no appreciable adverse effects on the total phenolic compound, vitamin C levels, or free radical scavenging activity in most of the tested vegetables. These findings imply that ozone technology is a safe and effective method for eliminating chlorpyrifos from the surface of vegetables, potentially lowering the risk to consumer health. AbstractAlpha glucosidases are multifunctional glycoside hydrolases with hydrolysis and transglycosylation ability. It can be utilized for the glycosidic bond synthesis or glycosylation of Ascorbic acid/Vitamin C to its stable analogue, Ascorbic acid 2 glucoside (AA2G), a compound with wide applications in cosmetics and pharma. The application of α-glucosidases for industrial scale transglycosylation is limited due to the low transglycosylation yield of free enzymes. Enzyme immobilization techniques could enable the development of efficient, reusable catalysts. Only a few glycoside hydrolases have been studied in immobilized form for transglycosylation reactions, and α-glucosidases are probably the least explored in this form. Transglycosylation activity of immobilized α-glucosidase from Aspergillus carbonarius BTCF 5 was studied for AA2G synthesis, where different immobilization techniques like calcium alginate encapsulation, adsorption on chitosan beads, covalent cross-linking on magnetic nanoparticles, and cross-linked enzyme aggregates (CLEA) were employed for the immobilization. The immobilization yield of calcium alginate encapsulated enzyme, enzyme immobilized on Fe-MNP support, enzyme immobilized on chitosan beads and as CLEA were 107%, 99%, 46% and 486%, respectively. CLEA was identified as the best immobilization technique for this bi-substrate reaction due to the high immobilization yield and activity retention (30% activity retained after 5 consecutive cycles). Enzyme immobilization increased the transglycosylation activity by 38%, yielding 118 mM AA2G against 72 mM by the free enzyme. AbstractThe study aimed to assess the toxic effect of cadmium (Cd) on the exocrine and endocrine functions of pancreas, the changes in pancreatic tissue after Cd withdrawal, and the protective effects of vitamin C (VC) and Nigella sativa (NS) against Cd-induced damage. Rats were assigned to: control, Cd-treated (0.5 mg/kg/d intraperitoneal [IP] injection), VC and Cd-treated (receiving 100 mg/kg/d VC orally and Cd concomitantly), NS and Cd-treated (receiving 20 mg/kg/d NS and Cd, simultaneously), and Cd withdrawal (receiving Cd for 30 d then living free for recovery for other 30 d). Blood samples were collected and post-sacrifice pancreatic specimens were processed for light and electron microscope study. Quantitative analyses of pancreatic collagen area%, pancreatic islet parameters, β cell density, and insulin immunoexpression were done. Fasting blood glucose was significantly increased in Cd-treated and Cd-withdrawal groups, while co-treatment with VC and NS caused significant reductions (p < 0.05). Cd-induced extensive degenerative changes in pancreatic acini and islets at light and ultrastructure levels. Obvious fibrosis and congestion of blood vessels were noticed. Significant reductions in pancreatic islet number, volume, and surface area and diminished beta cell count and insulin immunoexpression were observed. After withdrawal of Cd, the whole pancreatic tissue still showed a serious impact. Concomitant treatment with VC or NS obviously reduced these degenerative changes and significantly improved pancreatic islet parameters and insulin immunoexpression. VC showed a better amendment than NS, but this difference was statistically insignificant. Therefore, VC and NS could be used as prophylactic agents that lessen Cd consequences on the pancreas. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of inadequate micronutrient intake and its risk factors among women one year after giving birth. 240 women of reproductive age were assessed. Micronutrient intake was assessed from two 24-hour records at three stages (3-6-12 months after childbirth). A generalized linear mixed-effect model was used to assess the factors associated with food intake. A prevalence of inadequate micronutrient intake was observed, with the exception of iron. Intake was lower among food-insecure women (zinc: β -0.13; iron: β -0.09; vitamin C: β -0.44). AbstractIn China, increasing breeding waste has caused environmental problems. This study explored the possibility of using breeding waste compost (BWC) instead of chemical fertilizer in vegetable cultivation. The experiment included no fertilizer (CK), 100% chemical fertilizer (CF), 10, 20, and 30% substitution of cow dung compost (CDC), goose dung compost (GDC), and duck dung compost (DDC) with chemical fertilizer (C01, C02, C03, G01, G02, G03, D01, D02, D03). The results showed that BWC, particularly GDC, promoted lettuce growth and development. Compared to CK, the leaf fresh and dry weight of G03 were the highest, increasing significantly by 6.60 and 7.29 times, and the root fresh and dry weight of G02 were the highest, increasing significantly by 12.72 and 6.00 times. Different BWC improved soluble sugar, soluble protein, and Vitamin C to varying degrees, and the nitrate contents of some BWC treatments were lower than that of CK and CF. Conversely, CF had the highest nitrate accumulation and limited effects on certain growth and quality parameters. The mineral elements in lettuce were also affected by the type and dosage of fertilizers. The total nitrogen of CF, total phosphorus of G03, total potassium of G02, Ca and Mg of D01, Fe of CF, and Zn of G02 were at the peak. The rapid increase of biomass in GDC treatments led to reductions in Ca and Fe. Applying fertilizers would affect heavy metals in lettuce to unequal degrees, but all were within the food safety scope. Favipiravir is a nucleoside analogue antiviral drug and inhibits the replication of many RNA viruses, especially influenza viruses. Favipiravir has also been used to treat patients with mild to moderate COVID-19 disease. However, various side effects, including neurological side effects, have been reported related to the use of favipiravir. Therefore, in this study, we aimed to investigate the possible effects of favipiravir alone or in combination with vitamin C on aged rats' brain tissue and the possible mechanisms of these effects. A total of 30 rats used in the study were randomly divided into 5 equal groups and the first group was kept as the control group. High-dose (100 mg/kg) or low-dose (20 mg/kg) favipiravir was administered alone or in combination with vitamin C (150 mg/kg) to other groups. Administration of both high and low doses of favipiravir significantly increased TBARS levels in brain tissue of aged rats. Similarly, both high and low doses of favipiravir led to significant increases in Bcl-2 and caspase-3 relative mRNA expression. However, only low dose favipiravir caused a significant increase in iNOS and IL-1β relative mRNA expression levels. Similar results were also observed in histopathological examinations. However, co-administration of vitamin C with favipiravir attenuated some of the adverse effects of favipiravir. In conclusion, in this study, it was shown that the use of favipiravir caused some adverse effects through oxidative, inflammatory and apoptotic processes in the brain tissue of aged rats, and the potential of vitamin C to alleviate these effects. Mono-derivatives of fullerene C60 with l-phenylalanine, o-fluoro-l-phenylalanine and p-fluoro-l-phenylalanine, as well as their hybrid nanostructures with derivatives of vitamin B12, have been synthesised. The structure of the compounds was determined by IR, UV and CD-spectroscopy. The IR spectra of the obtained compounds contain all bands characteristic of the original compounds, with the exception of the band at 1227 cm−1, which is related to the free carboxyl group in the fullerene fragment. In the UV spectra of hybrid nanostructures contain smoothed peaks in the region of 360 nm, confirming the presence of corrin ligand in the original and obtained compounds. Using the CD method, it was found that all spectra have a characteristic maximum in the region of 430 nm, confirming the presence in all hybrids nanostructures of a fragment of vitamin B12: e-COOH-Cbi(OH)2. The radiuses of nanoparticles of hybrid nanostructures, calculated by the dynamic light scattering method, range from 90 to 120 nm. The degree of association in the complexes ranges from 400 to 600 thousand molecules. It was shown that the resulting hybrid nanostructure retains catalytic activity in the autoxidation reaction of ascorbic acid, inherent in derivatives of vitamin B12. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Xenografts of androgen-independent human DU145 prostate metastatic carcinomas implanted in nu/nu male mice have revealed a significant survival after a prooxidant anticancer treatment consisting of a combination of menadione bisulfite and sodium ascorbate (VK3:VC). Methods: Implanted samples of diaphragm carcinomas from longest survived mice from either oral, intraperitoneal (IP), or both oral and IP treatment groups were assessed with light, scanning, and transmission electron microscopy to analyze morphologic damages. Results: Compared with previous fine structure data of in vitro untreated carcinomas, the changes induced by oral, IP, and oral with IP VK3:VC treatment dismantled those xenografts with autoschizis, and necrotic atrophy was accomplished by cell's oxidative stress whose injuries were consequent to reactivated deoxyribonucleases and ribonucleases. Tumor destructions resulted from irreversible damages of nucleus components, endoplasmic reticulum, and mitochondria there. Other alterations included those of the cytoskeleton that resulted in characteristic self-excisions named " autoschizis." All these injuries lead resilient cancer cells to necrotic cell death. Conclusion: The fine structure damages caused by VK3:VC prooxidant combination in the human DU145 prostate xenografts confirmed those shown in vitro and of other cell lines with histochemistry and biomolecular investigations. These devastations incurred without damage to normal tissues; thus, our data brought support for the above combination to assist in the treatment of prostate cancers and other cancers. Salinity, a significant abiotic stressor, imperils vegetable growth, yield, and quality. Moreover, elevated salinity levels, driven by climate change, jeopardize vegetable nutritional quality. In particular, protected cultivation systems, responsible for 60% of the global vegetable industry's economic value, encounter notable challenges in managing salinity due to water runoff and drainage mechanism limitations. Therefore, it is crucial to understand the intricate mechanisms that control salinity and use this knowledge to improve plant tolerance to these conditions. In this study, we explore strategies to effectively mitigate the detrimental impacts of salinity on vegetable crops cultivated within protected environments. Additionally, we investigate the benefits of controlled moderate salinity adjustments in protected cultivation to enhance their nutritional content. Moderate salinity or nutrient solution increases typically raise total soluble solids, sugar, vitamin C, phenols, lycopene, and antioxidants in most fruit vegetables. Though generally applicable to leafy vegetables, exceptions like lettuce and wild rocket may show inconsistencies, potentially reducing some quality traits. Interdisciplinary approaches are essential to developing sustainable solutions for managing salinity in protected cultivation systems, thereby ensuring the resilience of vegetable production in the face of changing environmental conditions. Given the impracticality of desalinating all areas, future research should also investigate synergies between moderate salinity stress, cultivars used, and environmental factors from physiological and molecular perspectives to enhance vegetable nutritional quality. AbstractBackground and AimsMethodsResultsConclusionsInformation on effective bowel preparation (BP) methods for patients with constipation is limited. We recently reported the efficacy of 1 L polyethylene glycol plus ascorbic acid (PEG-Asc) combined with senna for BP; however, this regimen was insufficient in patients with constipation. We hypothesized that the addition of linaclotide, which is approved for the treatment of chronic constipation, to 1 L PEG-Asc would yield results superior to those of senna in patients with constipation.This was a retrospective, single-center study that included outpatients with constipation who underwent BP prior to colonoscopy between March and December 2019 (receiving 1 L PEG-Asc with 24 mg senna) and between January and October 2020 (receiving 1 L PEG-Asc with 500 mg linaclotide).A total of 543 patients with constipation were included, of whom 269 received linaclotide and 274 received senna. The rate of inadequate BP was significantly lower (11% vs 20%, p < 0.01) and the adenoma detection rate was significantly higher (54% vs 45%, p = 0.04) in the linaclotide group than in the senna group. Multivariate analysis revealed that the linaclotide regimen significantly reduced the risk of inadequate BP (odds ratio = 0.36, 95% confidence interval = 0.21–0.60, p < 0.01).The linaclotide regimen significantly increased BP efficacy and the adenoma detection rate compared with the senna regimen without reducing tolerability and is therefore a promising new option for BP in patients with constipation. AbstractAbnormal levels of ascorbic acid in the human body can induce various diseases. We reported a nickel-doped hydroxyapatite (Ni-HAp)-based biosensor for ascorbic acid and confirmed it through various spectroscopic techniques. Ni-HAp demonstrated peroxidase-like activity that was detected through the chromogenic substrate. The analyte produces a color change from blue-green to colorless. The optimized sensor has a correlation coefficient of 0.997, a limit of detection of 0.11 µM, a limit of quantification value of 0.36 µM, and a linear range from 2 to 47 µM for ascorbic acid. AbstractIvermectin (IVM) is a semi-synthetic antiparasitic derived from abamectin, one of the natural avermectins. The liver promotes metabolism and excretion of IVM, representing a risk of toxicity to this organ. The use of antioxidants to alleviate damage caused by chemicals has been increasingly studied. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of IVM on HepG2 cells to elucidate the mechanisms related to its toxicity and the possible protection provided by tetrahydrocurcumin (THC) and vitamin C. HepG2 cells were treated with IVM (1–25 μM) for 24 and 48 h. IVM was cytotoxic to HepG2 cells, denoted by a dose-dependent decrease in cell proliferation and metabolic activity. In addition, IVM induced damage to the cell membrane at all tested concentrations and for both incubation times. IVM significantly decreased the mitochondrial membrane potential from concentrations of 5 μM (24 h) and 1 μM (48 h). Additionally, IVM showed a time- and dose-dependent decrease in cellular adenosine triphosphate levels. The levels of reduced glutathione were decreased in a time- and dose-dependent manner, while IVM stimulated the production of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (RONS) at all tested doses, reaching rates above 50% following treatment at 7.5 μM (24 h) or 5 μM (48 h). Treatment with THC (50 μM) and vitamin C (50 μM) protected against IVM-induced cytotoxicity and RONS production. These results suggest that oxidative damage is involved in IVM-induced toxicity in HepG2 cells, and that THC and vitamin C can mitigate the toxic effects caused by the compound. AbstractThe 3-diethylaminophenol (3-DEAP) incorporated anthraquinone mono-azo dye derivative [(E)-1-((4-(diethylamino)-2-hydroxyphenyl)diazenyl)anthracene-9,10-dione] DAAD was synthesized through an electrophilic substitution reaction. The interaction between the -OH functional group and the nitrogen atom of the azo moiety may result in intramolecular proton transfer in the DAAD. DAAD was treated with metal ions such as Co(II), Ni(II), and Cu(II) acetates in a ratio of 2 : 1 revealing an octahedral structure. Many analytical and spectroscopic methods, including UV-vis, FT-IR, (1H and 13C) NMR, HRMS, TGA, VSM, ESR, and powder XRD methods, were used to verify the structural characteristics of the compounds. Additionally, the potency of the in-vitro antioxidant properties of the ligand and its Cu(II), Ni(II), and Co(II) complexes were evaluated; the results revealed that the Co(II) complex showed a maximum percent inhibition of 85 μM against the standard ascorbic acid. The correlation between peripheral and seminal hormones and biochemical parameters with sperm kinematics across seasons in buffalo bulls were studied. Semen from buffalo bulls (n = 13) during different seasons viz. summer, comfort (spring and autumn) and winter was collected. Sperm kinematics of ejaculates (n = 39) (three ejaculates per bull) were carried out during each season and simultaneously blood (10 mL) was collected and serum was separated for hormones (leptin, testosterone and kisspeptin) and biochemical [heat shock protein 70 (HSP70), ascorbic acid and total antioxidant capacity] estimation. Total motility (TM, %), progressive motility (PM, %) and rapid motility (RM, %) showed significant differences across seasons with the highest TM, PM and RM during winter. HSP70 was higher in seminal plasma levels during summer and TAC was higher in serum than seminal plasma during all seasons. Phlogacanthus thyrsiflorus Nees (Acanthaceae) is traditionally used in the North East Himalayan region to treat stomach issues, including gastritis. This study aimed to investigate the gastroprotective effect of 70% aqueous ethanol extract of Phlogacanthus thyrsiflorus flowers (PTE), standardized by HPTLC and LC-MS/MS, and to establish its possible mechanisms. The gastroprotective effect of PTE, at doses of 200 and 400 mg/kg body weight, was evaluated using both physical (pylorus ligation, PL; cold restraint stress, CRS) and chemical (ethanol, EtOH) ulcerogens-induced gastric ulcers in Wistar rats. Animals were randomly divided into control, ulcer control, positive control and PTE-treated groups, with PTE administered orally twice daily for 5 days. The protective effect of PTE was assessed through various gastric ulcer parameters, including gastric pH, gastric wall mucus, non-protein sulfhydryls (NP-SH) content, microvascular permeability, endogenous antioxidant markers, and gastric histopathology. HPTLC and LC-MS/MS confirmed the presence of gallic acid, naringenin, β-sitosterol and ascorbic acid in PTE. The active components of PTE showed significant dose-dependent inhibition of ulcer index, with reductions of 28.59-50.03% in PL, 27.69-53.23% in EtOH and 31.14-57.53% in CRS models (P< 0.01). Additionally, PTE at 400 mg/kg significantly increased gastric pH by 23.41%, mucus content by 33.69%, and NP-SH levels by 37.24%. PTE also demonstrated significant antioxidant potential and histopathological studies confirmed its protective effect. The study suggests that the anti-ulcer effect of PTE may be attributed to its ability to preserve adhered gastric mucus, exhibit antisecretory effects, and scavenge free radicals. In the present study, six mononuclear Zinc(II) complexes, [Zn(L1)(6-Methyl-2,2′-bpy)] (1), [Zn(L1)(1,10-Phen)] (2), [Zn(L1)(5-Amino-1,10-Phen)] (3), [Zn(L2)(6-Methyl-2,2′-bpy)] (4), [Zn(L2)(4,4′-Di-tert-butyl-2,2′-bpy)] (5), and [Zn(L2)(1,10-Phen)] (6) formed from Schiff bases, 2-methyl-1-phenyl-1-(pyridin-2-ylmethylimino)propan-2-ol (L1) and 4-chloro-5-methyl-2-(1-(pyridin-2-ylmethylimino)ethyl)phenol (L2) were synthesized. The synthesized Schiff base ligands and metal complexes were characterized by different spectroscopic techniques such as FTIR, UV–Visible, 1H & 13C NMR spectroscopy, in addition to Powder X-ray diffraction and cyclic voltammetry. Further, the synthesized metal complexes (1–6) and their parental Schiff bases (L1, L2) were evaluated for antibacterial, antifungal, and antioxidant activities. Of those, Complex 1 was shown to have significant antibacterial activity against all of the evaluated microorganisms. Schiff base ligands, L1 and L2, complexes 1, 4, and 5 were shown to have superior antifungal activity against Aspergillus niger than the standard drug, fluconazole. Rosa roxburghii (R. roxburghii) is a unique, edible, medicinal fruit rich in vitamin C found in Southwest China. Triadimefon (TDF) is a triazole fungicide that is widely used to control powdery mildew in R. roxburghii. To assess the safety of TDF in R. roxburghii, an LC-MS/MS method was developed for the simultaneous quantification of TDF and its major metabolite, triadimenol (TDN) in R. roxburghii. Both TDF and TDN showed high correlation coefficients (>0.999) for the solvent- and matrix-matched calibrations. The recovery rates of TDF and TDN in R. roxburghii ranged from 90.18% to 100.42%, with a relative standard deviation (RSD) of 1.25%–9.22%. The limit of quantification (LOQ) was 0.01 mg·kg−1. The half-life of TDF in R. roxburghii was between 2.74 and 3.07 days, with terminal residues ranging from < LOQ to 1.84 mg·kg−1. Recommended maximum residue limits (MRLs) and safe pre-harvest intervals (PHIs) for TDF in R. roxburghii were 0.5 mg·kg−1 and 21 days, respectively. A new salvianolic acid derivative, (7′E)-(7S, 8S)-salvianolic acid V (1), together with four previously described compounds (2-5) were obtained from the n-butanol fraction of Salvia miltiorrhiza flowers. Their structures were established by a series of spectroscopic methods, and the absolute configuration of 1 was determined by electronic circular dichroism (ECD) calculation. Salvianolic acids (1) and phenolic acids (2-4) showed stronger DPPH free radical scavenging abilities and certain protective effects against H2O2-induced human skin fibroblast (HSF) cells oxidative damage, in which compound 1 (IC50 7.12 μM) possessed more noticeable free radical scavenging activity than the positive control vitamin C (IC50 14.98 μM). Abstract\nNOVELTY STATEMENTThe increasing levels of cadmium (Cd) pollution in agricultural soil reduces plant growth and yield. This study aims to determine the impact of green synthesized zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO-NPs) on the physiochemical activities, nutrition, growth, and yield of Zea mays L. under Cd stress conditions. For this purpose, ZnO-NPs (450 ppm and 600 ppm) synthesized from Syzygium aromaticum were applied through foliar spray to Z. mays and also used as seed priming agents. A significant decline in plant height (35.24%), biomass production (43.86%), mineral content, gas exchange attributes, and yield (37.62%) was observed in Cd-spiked plants compared to the control. While, 450 ppm ZnO-NPs primed seed increased plant height (18.46%), total chlorophyll (80.07%), improved ascorbic acid (25.10%), DPPH activity (26.66%), and soil mineral uptake (Mg+2 (38.86%), K+ (27.83%), and Zn+2 (43.68%) as compared to plants only spiked with Cd. On the contrary, the foliar-applied 450 ppm ZnO-NPs increased plant height (8.22%), total chlorophyll content (73.59%), ascorbic acid (21.39%), and DPPH activity (17.61%) and yield parameters; cob diameter (19.45%), and kernels numbers 6.35% enhanced compared to plants that were spiked only with Cd. AbstractSelecting the appropriate dosage of nano zinc oxide for tomato and capsicum plants is crucial since higher concentration may negatively impact crop productivity and quality. Maintaining soil health helps in increasing crop output and quality without degrading the soil from overfertilization. The main objective of the study was to determine the physiological responses of both crops and ideal dose of nano zinc oxide (ZnO) for yield maximization and quality enhancement under controlled conditions. In present study, nano ZnO had noticeable effect on the fruit and quality parameters of both Solanaceous crops. Plants were treated with seed treatment and foliar applications of nano ZnO @ 50, 100, and 150 parts per million (ppm) along with 100% recommended dose of nutrients (RDN) through vermicompost; and 100% RDN through integration of vermicompost and fertilizers. In addition, nano zinc oxide was not supplied to the control treatment plants (T1). The results of the study revealed that 50 ppm of nano ZnO as foliar spray increased fruit and quality parameters in tomato and capsicum. In case of protein content, treatment comprised of 50 ppm of nano ZnO as seed treatment + 100% RDN through vermicompost and fertilizers, produced higher protein content over control. Furthermore, the application of nano ZnO lowered ascorbic acid levels in tomato and capsicum, while the control had the greatest levels. These results suggested that lower concentration of ZnO nanoparticles (50 ppm) is an ideal dosage and could be used in tomato and capsicum cultivation to improve yield and quality indices. Hydrogel skin grafts provide a moist environment and act as a regenerative template to the newly formed tissue. In this study, we developed 3D-bio-printed hydrogels using methacrylated pectin and methacrylated gelatin together with an antibacterial agent (curcumin), a bioactive agent (Vitamin-C) and fibroblast cells. Curcumin release was almost 10 times higher at pH 7.4 than pH 5.0, and it demonstrated antimicrobial affinity against Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus and Gram-negative Escherichia coli. The developed 3D-bio-printed hydrogels containing cells and bioactive agents demonstrated high cell viability, cell proliferation, and collagen production, and are promising skin graft candidates for the treatment of full-thickness problematic wounds. The sage is a perennial medicinal and aromatic plant belonging to the Lamiaceae family. Macro-micro elements have an important place in the development of this plant. One of these elements is selenium. This study aims to examine the effect of foliar selenium (Se) application on the agronomic, biochemical, and bioactive properties of sage. The plant height (PH), fresh herb yield (FHY), dry herb yield (DHY), and dry leaf yield (DLY) as agronomic properties, and Se content in the plant (SCP), ascorbic acid content (AAC), total phenolic content (TPC), antioxidant activity (AA) and mineral composition (MC) as biochemical and bioactive properties were investigated in this context. The experiment was carried out in four replications over three years in 2018, 2019, and 2020. In the study, 0 (control), 100, 200, 400, and 800 g ha−1 Se were applied to sage leaves. At the end of the study, it was determined that Se application was effective on the agronomic characteristics of the sage, except for the first year. The application of 100 g ha−1 Se in FHY, DHY, DLY, AA, and TPC properties emerged as the recommended dose since it reached the highest values. In addition, it was evaluated that the Se application did not have a statistically significant effect on the SCP. A new fruit of the Myrtaceae, Eugenia bonita, was recently discovered. Its composition is unknown, which makes its physicochemical characterisation and its development profile during maturation necessary. Therefore, this work constitutes the first study aimed at determining the quality parameters and bioactive compounds of new fruit of E. bonita, at different stages of maturation. The fruits were collected in the city of Bonito de Minas, Minas Gerais in five stages of maturation and submitted for analysis of the physicochemical characteristics. The advance of maturation caused increase in all biometric characteristics of E. bonita fruits and reduction in all constituents of the proximate composition, except moisture. In addition, the ripe fruit was characterised by high water content, high acidity, and good sweetness. Moreover, there was change in the fruit color from green to yellow-orange, after maturity. In turn, although some phytochemicals have degraded during maturation, the high levels of vitamin C (61.17 mg/100 g) and total phenolics (587.92 mg GAE/100 g) in the ripe fruits characterise E. bonita as an important source of bioactive compounds. Three sweet potato genotypes NSP-2, NSP-6 (white flesh) and NSP-12 (orange flesh), were subjected under different processing techniques (boiling, steaming, and roasting) to check the nutritional status. Sugars like glucose, fructose, sucrose, and maltose was increased under roasting treatment for all of the genotypes. Crude fiber, cellulose, hemicellulose and ash content were significantly deferred within different genotypes but different treatments remained at par with various processing techniques. Steaming was proved to be the best treatment to decrease loss of vitamin C and phenol content where as roasting was the best performing treatmant to decrease the antinutrients like phytic acid and trypsin inhibitor activity. Comparatively, higher antioxidant activity was observed in steaming treatmet. NSP-12 revealed comparatively lower Glycemic index (GI) indicating high amylase: amylopectin ratio may become a good source of good carbohydrate for diabetic friendly food for near future. Quenching of excess aqueous ozone (O3) residual is needed to avoid off-gassing and oxidative damage to downstream components. Eight quenching agents (QAs), calcium thiosulfate (Ca-Thio), sodium bisulfite (Na-Bi), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), sodium thiosulfate (Na-Thio), sodium metabisulfite (Na-Metabi), potassium metabisulfite (K-Metabi), sodium sulfite (Na-S), and ascorbic acid (AscAcid) were tested at varying pHs (7.5, 7.9, and 8.5) and temperatures (4°C, 15°C, and 23°C). Temperature had significant effects on initial quenching (≤30 s), with less occurring at 4°C than 23°C; but with extended contact time this trend reversed. Quenching efficiency was not substantially affected by pH. Ca-Thio and Na-Thio were inefficient but quick, had lower mass requirements, and minimal handling concerns. Na-Metabi, Na-Bi, and Na-S were quick and efficient, but K-Metabi was the only QA that quenched (26–31%) less O3 than stoichiometry at all conditions. These sulfite-based QAs had more handling concerns and greater mass requirements. H2O2 was slower than other QAs but 2–9× quicker than predicted by rate coefficients and efficient when given longer contact time (≤5 min). H2O2 had some handling concerns but the lowest mass requirements (assuming 5 min contact time) and creates desirable AOP conditions. AscAcid consistently quenched (22–113%) more O3 than the stoichiometric ratio but had higher mass requirements, except in colder temperatures. AbstractGreen technology for the fabrication of bio-degradable microspheres is exciting and needed. In this study, a new water-in-water Pickering emulsion green technology is proposed for the fabrication of the crosslinked starch microspheres with sodium tripolyphosphate as the crosslinker, polyethylene glycol aqueous solution as the continuous phase (PEG phase) and starch aqueous solution as the dispersed phase (starch phase). The factors that affect the morphology and particle sizes of cross-linked starch microspheres are investigated by laser scanning confocal microscope (LCM) and laser particle size analyzer. The results reveal that the particle sizes of crosslinked starch microspheres are increasing with increased starch concentration. The particle sizes of crosslinked starch microspheres show a first increase and then decrease trend with the increase of the concentration of PEG 20,000 in the PEG phase. The hydrophobic nano silica is used as an emulsifier to form water-in-water Pickering emulsion and shows an obvious effect on the morphology of starch microspheres. When the starch concentration is 20.00 wt%, PEG 20000 concentration is 32.56 wt%, the ratio of starch to PEG phase is 0.20 and the amount of silica is 5.00 wt% of starch, starch microspheres with regular shapes are obtained with the size of about 32.30 ± 0.22 µm. The fabricated cross-linked starch microspheres are non-crystalline and show good water and oil absorption performances. The application of fabricated crosslinked starch microspheres in the adsorption and release of Vitamin C is conducted. The maximum adsorption capacity of crosslinked starch microspheres for Vitamin C reaches 309.9 mg/g. Starch microspheres show a controlled release of Vitamin C in water. The presence of impurities, microorganisms, enzymes, suspended solids, and impurities in unclarified pomelo juice negatively affected the quality and shelf-life of the product in the food industry. The objective of this study focuses on the clarification of fresh pomelo juice using an ultrafiltration (UF) process. The study examined the influence of the operating pressure (OP) on the various quality attributes of pomelo juice, such as pH, total soluble solids (TSS), turbidity, color, total phenolic content (TPC), ascorbic acid content (AAC) and fouling mechanisms and permeate flux (J) behavior. To perform the clarification of pomelo juice, a 100 kDa membrane (polymeric) was used in a dead-end system, and the process was carried out in batch mode at OP values of 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, 2.5 and 3.0 bar. The findings revealed that increasing OP led to higher flux during ultrafiltration with limiting pressure (Plim). The limiting pressure (Plim) was anticipated to be beyond 3.0 bar due to the enzymatic pretreatment. The primary fouling mechanism during the clarification process was total pore blocking. After filtration, the resulting juice showed a significant reduction in turbidity of over 97%, while TSS was lowered by 7–17% compared to fresh juice. The pomelo juice was efficiently clarified while the pH remained stable at ∼3.8. The clarified juice showed a minor decline of 10.1–13.9% in TPC and a 10.8–16.7% reduction in AAC compared to the fresh unclarified juice. Rhanterium epapposum Oliv. (Family: Asteraceae) is a common plant in Saudi Arabia, possessing a variety of traditional uses. The current targets were studying the comparative chemical profile and antioxidant of the essential oil (EO) of R. epapposum collected from a sandy habitat at Qareenah, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The EO profiling was constructed via gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and GC-flame ionization detection (GC-FID). Forty-eight compounds were found, including monoterpenes (hydrocarbons 3.25% and oxygenated 48.64%), sesquiterpenes (hydrocarbons 12.64 % and oxygenated 32.38%), which are the backbone of the oil along with a minor of other non-terpenoid compounds (1.31%). Linalool (18.02%), α-eudesmol (11.98%), trans-sesquisabinene hydrate (11.63%), aromadendrene oxide-(1) (7.68%), nerol (6.88%), and α-terpineol (5.01%) were identified as the dominant components. The EO was evaluated for its antioxidant activity using in vitro DPPH, ABTS, and FRAP methods. The results demonstrated that R. epapposum EO possesses a dosage-dependent ability for antioxidant scavenging activity as per all three techniques. This EO exhibited IC50 values of 517.59, 350.24, and 713.72 μg/mL for the DPPH, ABTS, and FRAP, respectively, through the comparison with the ascorbic acid with respective values of 36.10, 26.12, and 44.58 μg/mL. The main compounds were subjected to docking analysis on cytochrome P450 1A1 and xanthine oxidase. All evaluated compounds exhibited good binding affinities especially α-eudesmol and linalool for both enzymes, respectively. The current research confirmed the potent free radical scavenging properties of R. epapposum EO. More research on the antioxidant content of this oil and/or its primary constituents in pure form on the two enzymes, cytochrome P450 1A1 and xanthine oxidase, is proposed to develop a better understanding of the oxidative action routes in vivo and in vitro. Two neolignan glycosides including a new one (1), along with seven iridoid glycosides (3 − 9) and nine flavonoid glycosides (10 − 18), were isolated from the leaves of Vaccinium bracteatum. Their structures were established mainly on the basis of 1D/2D NMR and ESIMS analyses, as well as comparison to known compounds in the literature. The structure of 1 with absolute stereochemistry was also confirmed by chemical degradation and ECD calculation. Selective compounds showed antiradical activity against ABTS and/or DPPH. This scoping review aimed to investigate whether sodium ascorbate can recover the bond strength of resin composite restorations to sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl)-treated dentin. The protocol of this study, available online (), followed the Joana Briggs Institute guidelines. The PRISMA Extension for Scoping Reviews was used to reporting. In vitro studies evaluating the effect of sodium ascorbate on NaOCl-treated dentin and resin composite restorations, regardless of the adhesive material used, were included without time restriction. The search and study screening were conducted in Embase, PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science by two independent researchers. A descriptive analysis was performed and the PRILE 2021 guidelines were used to assess the risk bias of the included studies. The initial search yielded 941 studies, of which only 7 studies were included. The findings revealed that extracted third molars were the most used samples, and there was a significant variation in the NaOCl concentration employed. In general, sodium ascorbate effectively restored the compromised bond strength in dentin treated with different NaOCl concentrations. Furthermore, regarding the failure mode, the most prevalent observed was mixed failure. This scoping review showed that sodium ascorbate appears to effectively recover the bond strength of resin composite restorations to dentin treated with NaOCl. Methomyl (Met) is a carbamate pesticide, extensively used as an insecticide and an acaricide. Environmental and occupational exposures to this chemical may pose serious health risks. This study aimed to investigate the possible protective effects of vitamin E (Vit E) against methomyl-induced toxicity. Thirty-two pregnant rats were divided into four groups and treated orally on gestational days 0–18: control, Met (10 mg/kg/day), Vit E (100 mg/kg/day) and (Met + Vit E), respectively. Biochemical parameters, progesterone levels and reproductive indices were evaluated. After post-partum, ovaries were excised, weighed and used for histopathological examinations. Results showed that Met induces significant alterations in biochemical parameters, progesterone levels and reproductive outcomes. Moreover, Met-ovary sections revealed vessel congestion and an increase in atretic follicles. This study evaluated the effects of topically applied hydrogels (HG) containing nanoencapsulated indol-3-carbinol (I3C) and its free form in a rat model of skin wounds. Formulations were topically applied twice a day for five days to the wounds. On days 1, 3, and 6, the wound area was measured to verify the % of regression. On the sixth day, the animals were euthanized for the analysis of the inflammatory and oxidative profile in wounds. The nanocapsules (NC) exhibited physicochemical characteristics compatible with this kind of suspension. After five hours of exposure to ultraviolet C, more than 78% of I3C content in the suspensions was still observed. The NC-I3C did not modify the physicochemical characteristics of HG when compared to the HG base. In the in vivo study, an increase in the size of the wound was observed on the 3rd experimental day, which was lower in the treated groups (mainly in HG-NC-I3C) compared to the control. On the 6th day, HG-I3C, HG-NC-B, and HG-NC-I3C showed lower regression of the wound compared to the control. Additionally, HG-NC-I3C exhibited an anti-inflammatory effect (as observed by decreased levels of interleukin-1B and myeloperoxidase), reduced oxidative damage (by decreased reactive species, lipid peroxidation, and protein carbonylation levels), and increased antioxidant defense (by improved catalase activity and vitamin C levels) compared to the control. The current study showed more satisfactory results in the HG-NC-I3C group than in the free form of I3C in decreasing acute inflammation and oxidative damage in wounds. Objective: To comparatively analyze nutrient intake and dietary adequacy on weekdays (WKDs) and weekends (WKNs) among undergraduate students. Participants: University students (N = 210), 18–30 years old. Methods: A two-day food record was used. Intake of energy, macronutrients, micronutrients and fiber were calculated, without and with an adjustment for 2000 kcal of energy and compared to the corresponding nutritional requirements. Results: Energy and macronutrients' intake was higher on WKNs (1,776.84 ± 40.68 vs. 2,025.76 ± 52.46 kcal; p <.05). There was a high predominance of hypocaloric diet on both WKDs (72%) and WKNs (57%). A low prevalence (<50%) of favorable intake level of most micronutrients and fiber was found on WKDs, WKNs, or both. There was a lower favorable intake of vitamins A, C, iron, and magnesium on WKNs, after adjusting for 2000 kcal. Particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter ≤2.5 μm (PM2.5) is a public health risk. We investigate PM2.5 on metabolites in cardiomyocytes and the influence of vitamin C on PM2.5 toxicity. For 24 hours, H9C2 were exposed to various concentrations of PM2.5 (0, 100, 200, 400, 800 μg/ml), after which the levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and cell viability were measured using the cell counting kit-8 (CCK-8) and 2′,7′-dichlorofluoresceindiacetate (DCFH2-DA), respectively. H9C2 were treated with PM2.5 (200 μg/ml) in the presence or absence of vitamin C (40 μmol/L). mRNA levels of interleukin 6(IL-6), caspase-3, fatty acid-binding protein 3 (FABP3), and hemeoxygenase-1 (HO-1) were investigated by quantitative reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction. Non-targeted metabolomics by LC-MS/MS was applied to evaluate the metabolic profile in the cell. Results revealed a concentration-dependent reduction in cell viability, death, ROS, and increased expression of caspase-3, FABP3, and IL-6. In total, 15 metabolites exhibited significant differential expression (FC > 2, p < 0.05) between the control and PM2.5 group. In the PM2.5 group, lysophosphatidylcholines (LysoPC,3/3) were upregulated, whereas amino acids (5/5), amino acid analogues (3/3), and other acids and derivatives (4/4) were downregulated. PM2.5 toxicity was lessened by vitamin C. It reduced PM2.5-induced elevation of LysoPC (16:0), LysoPC (16:1), and LysoPC (18:1). Bio-stimulants are gaining importance for elevating the stagnated yield level resulting from continuous use of chemical fertilizers (CF) in many crops, however, their use in pomegranate have not been fully explored. Two years of field experiments were conducted on a 5-years old pomegranate cv. Bhagwa orchard to investigate the effects of different combinations of commercial bio-stimulant products namely, microbial-based product A containing consortium of Rhizophagus spp. (5 kg ha−1), seaweed extract-based granular formulation D (30 kg ha−1) and liquid formulation B (625 and 1250 ml ha−1) through soil application as well as wettable granular formulation, C (1 and 2 g l−1) and liquid formulation, E (1 ml l−1) through foliar sprays along with chemical fertilizers on soil fertility, trees' nutrition, fruit yield and quality of pomegranate. Results showed that integrated use of CF and bio-stimulants significantly increased the number of bisexual flowers. However, the combination of microbial-based product A (5 kg ha−1), seaweed extract based liquid formulation B (625 ml ha−1) in soil and foliar spary of seaweed extract based wettable granular formulation C (1–2 g l−1) with CF resulted in production of the highest fruit yield (increased by 41.97–51.61%) with 23.08–33.38% increase in the exportable grade fruit and improved quality attributes viz. ascorbic acid, anthocyanin, non-reducing sugar, protein, and mineral content of fruits through enhancement in soil fertility and trees' micronutrient status compared to only CF. These doses combinations of bio-stimulants along with CF gave rise to the highest benefit–cost ratio of 2.10–2.34:1 and hence can be recommended for sustainable pomegranate cultivation. Sea cucumbers were stored live in 25% oxygen or 25 mg/mL of ascorbic acid for 7 days, for comparison purposes. The condition of the individuals was assessed through the sensory scores, bacterial communities, and biochemical indexes. The oxygen treatment extended preservation by 2 days compared to ascorbic acid. After 7 days, the total volatile basic nitrogen and the microbial content in all sea cucumbers were within acceptable limits. The actin degradation rate reached 1.3416 ± 0.03%, and cathepsin B and L increased by 94.6% and 59.1%, respectively, in the Control group. The quality decline of sea cucumbers during storage was caused by autolysis rather than spoilage organisms. The cherry tomato is a nutritious product commonly used in salads or consumed as a dietary supplement. However, improper storage after harvesting can lead to a decrease in its quality and shelf-life. In this study, we aimed to assess the effects of free essential oil of Mentha × Piperita L. and solid lipid nanoparticles containing free essential oil at concentrations of 0.025%, 0.05%, 0.075%, 0.1%, and 0.2% on the microbial load and post-harvest quality of Solanum lycopersicum cv. Santiago F1 during 28 days of storage at 8°C. Fruits coated with solid lipid nanoparticles containing essential oil at 0.075%, 0.1%, and 0.2% maintained their quality attributes, including firmness at approximately 50%, ascorbic acid at about 80%, phenolic compounds, color parameters, antioxidant activity at around 71%, and sensory properties compared to the control groups or fruits treated with free essential oil of Mentha × Piperita L. This coating also effectively suppressed cellulase and polyphenol oxidase activity, reducing microbial load and weight loss percentages to under 10%. However, it's important to note that fruits coated with free essential oil of Mentha × Piperita L. at 0.1% and 0.2% showed visible tissue damage. Our research demonstrated that the combination of solid lipid nanoparticles and free essential oil of Mentha × Piperita L. resulted in a decrease in microbial load, an extension of shelf-life, and improvements in the quality characteristics of cherry tomato fruits. Torsional stress in double-stranded DNA enables and regulates facets of chromosomal metabolism, replication, and transcription and requires regulatory enzymatic systems including topoisomerases and histone methyltransferases. As such, this machinery may be subject to deleterious effects from reactive mutagens, including ones from carcinogenic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) adduct formation with DNA. Supercoiled plasmid DNA was investigated for its torsional responses to adducts formed in vitro from PAH benzylic carbocation reactive intermediates created spontaneously by release of leaving groups. PAH sulfate esters were found to (1) unwind DNA in a concentration dependent manner, and (2) provide maximum unwinding in a pattern consistent with known carcinogenicities of the parent PAHs, that is, 6-methylbenzo[a]pyrene > 7,12-methylbenz[a]anthracene > 3-methylcholanthrene > 9-methylanthracene > 7-methylbenz[a]anthracene > 1-methylpyrene. Supercoil unwinding was demonstrated to be dependent on the presence of sulfate or chloride leaving groups such that reactive carbocations were generated in situ by hydrolysis. In silico modeling of intercalative complex topology showed PAH benzylic carbocation reactive functional groups in alignment with target nucleophiles on guanine bases in a 5'-dCdG-3' pocket in agreement with known formation of nucleotide adducts. Inhibitory or modulatory effects on PAH-induced supercoil unwinding were seen with ascorbic acid and an experimental antineoplastic agent Antineoplaston A10 in agreement with their known anticarcinogenic properties. In summary, the reactive PAH intermediates studied here undoubtedly participate in well-known mutational mechanisms such as frameshifts and apurinic site generation. However, they are also capable of random disruption of chromosomal supercoiling in a manner consistent with the known carcinogenicities of the parent compounds, and this mechanism may represent an additional detrimental motif worthy of further study for a more complete understanding of chemical carcinogenicity. We aimed to prospectively assess the association between variety and quantity of fruits and vegetables (FV) and cardiovascular diseases (CVD) incidence and mortality due to the limited evidence. Our analysis included 2,918 adults with a follow-up period of 29,559 person-years. An inverse association was detected between fruit intake and the risk of incidence and mortality from CVD. We found no association between diversity scores of fruits, vegetables, and FV with CVD risk. Subjects with high quantity-high variety, high quantity-low variety, and low quantity-high variety of fruits, vegetables, or FV exhibited no difference in CVD risk compared to the subjects with low quantity-low variety intake. Increasing the variety of FV was associated with increases in the intake of β-carotene, lycopene, lutein, vitamin C, selenium, fibre, fat, and protein after adjustment for the quantity and covariates. Knowing the true levels of nutrients and dietary bioactives in fruit juices at the point of consumption is key to properly understand their potential health benefits. The objective was to characterise the vitamin C and flavanone content in commercial orange juices consumed in Europe, compared with fresh-squeezed juices. Commercial juices were a rich source of vitamin C (>30% of the Nutrient Reference Value). Vitamin C in fresh-squeezed juices, at the end of their shelf-life, remained 33% higher than the levels found in the commercial juices. Flavanones had similar values from both commercial and fresh juices, except for fresh samples stored for 48 h, where fresh juices had higher values (22.36 mg/100 mL). Thus, orange juices preserve their bioactive compounds during storage, with very little influence of the brand, country, industrial process or storage conditions. The research explored Canna indica's ability to extract Cd in hydroponic conditions, determining its upper tolerance threshold and assessing Cd's impact on growth and biochemical properties. Plants were grown in 5L tanks containing nutrient solutions with varying Cd concentrations (0, 100, 200, 300, and 400 mg/L) for 18 days. Each treatment was performed in triplicate. Analysis of Cd content across roots, shoot, and leaves revealed high absorption rates of 89.5% to 96.8% efficiency for Cd treatments of 100–400 mg/L. Metrics like bioaccumulation coefficient (BAC), translocation factor (TF), and bio-concentration factor (BCF) were determined, indicating BAC > 1 across treatments, while TF was <1 for 100 mg/L and >1 for higher Cd treatments. Bio-concentration patterns varied with Cd concentration. Optimal Cd uptake occurred at 200–300 mg/L, declining notably at 400 mg/L. The study suggests C. indica's potential for phytoextraction up to 400 mg/L Cd contamination, but adverse effects emerged at ≥300 mg/L: reduced chlorophyll pigments, ascorbic acid, fresh/dry weights, and elevated leaf pH, indicating a Cd tolerance threshold of 300 mg/L for C. indica. In the first phytochemical investigation of specialized metabolites from the stem bark of Alyxia fascicularis, which is used in different traditional medicines, including those of Myanmar and China, five lignans (1-5) and three coumarins (6-8) were isolated by semipreparative HPLC separations and identified mainly by 1D and 2D NMR spectral analysis. The radical scavenging activity of isolated compounds was tested using the DPPH method. Noteworthy, most lignans exhibited antiradical effects comparable to vitamin C and gallic acid. One of the most serious threats to human health is the increasing prevalence of drug-resistant pathogens. The development of new antibiotics capable of combating drug resistance is critical. In various bacteria and plant species, 4-aminobenzoic acid (PABA) is produced and used as a substrate for folate generation. In this study, a new series of PABA analogs were synthesized and evaluated for their antimicrobial activity. Thirteen novel compounds were prepared by linking PABA hydrazide to sulfonate esters via a hydrazone bridge (4a–m). The structures of these compounds were characterized by 1H and 13C NMR and FT-IR spectroscopy as well as by LC-MS. Following structural characterization, all compounds were tested for their antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 29213), Enterococcus faecium (ATCC 19434), Escherichia coli (ATCC 25922), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (ATCC 27853), and Candida albicans (ATCC 10231) strains. Four compounds were found to have moderate antimicrobial activity against the P. aeruginosa strain. These compounds, including 4e, 4f, 4g, and 4m, containing a hydrazide-hydrazone sulfonate functionality, showed the best MIC value of 64 μg/mL. In addition, synergistic effects of ascorbic acid, salicylic acid, and N-acetyl cysteine (NAC) with synthesized compounds were also investigated. It was observed that the combination of compounds 4f and 4g with NAC showed antipseudomonal activity with MIC values of 32 μg/mL and 16 μg/mL, respectively, against the P. aeuriginosa strain. The antimicrobial activity of 4f and 4g was enhanced by two folds in combination with NAC. Our findings in this study can be crucial for the development of new potent antimicrobial agents. Objective: This study aimed to explore the relationship between the intake of vitamin C, vitamin E and ß-carotene, and the risk of Parkinson's disease (PD). Methods: Web of Science, Embase, PubMed, Cochrane library, CNKI, and WanFang databases were searched from inception to 29 August 2022 for observational studies reporting the odds ratios (ORs) or relative risks (RRs) or hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) of PD by Vitamin C/Vitamin E/ß-carotene intake. Random-effects models, publication bias assessment, subgroup, sensitivity and dose-response analyses were performed, using. Stata version 12.0. Results: A total of 13 studies were included. There was no significant association between highdose vitamin C intake and the risk of PD compared with low-dose vitamin C intake (RR = 0.98, 95%CI:0.89,1.08). Compared with low-dose intake, high-dose intake of vitamin E can prevent the risk of PD (RR = 0.87, 95%CI:0.77,0.99). Compared with lower ß-carotene intake, there was a borderline non-significant correlation between higher intake and PD risk (RR = 0.91, 95% CI:0.82,1.01), and high dose ß-carotene intake was found to be associated with a lower risk of PD in women (RR = 0.78, 95%CI:0.64,0.96). Water resources pose a considerable limitation in arid and semi-arid regions like Iran, primarily due to the scarcity of rainfall and heightened evaporation rates. Within open hydroponic systems, a significant concern arises from the depletion of nutrient solutions utilized for crop fertigation. This predicament subsequently gives rise to environmental issues of note and a discernible surge in production expenses. Application of humic acid (HA), as a plant biostimulant, enhances plant tolerance to reduced water supply and counterbalances the effects of diluted nutrient solutions. A greenhouse experiment was conducted to investigate the impact of applying HA (600 ppm) in conjunction with three nutrient solution concentrations (complete nutrient solution (NSc), 75% NSc (NS1), and 50% NSc (NS2)), as well as two irrigation levels (100 and 50% of plant water requirement, IL100 and IL50, respectively). The treatment under IL50 was referred to as ½ NSc, ½ NS1, and ½ NS2. The findings showed that almost all of the traits studied were significantly affected by the applied treatments. The highest yield (409.4 g m−2), leaf area (34.67 cm−2 plant), biomass (1.092 g−1 plant), membrane stability index (90.47%), chlorophyll a (0.99 mg g−1 FW), chlorophyll b (0.413 mg g−1 FW), total chlorophyll (1.54 mg g−1 FW), carotenoid (0.437 mg g−1 FW), vitamin C (730.7 mg ascorbic acid kg−1 FW), amino acid (236.8 µg g−1 FW) and nitrate reductase activity (102.8 µg NO2- mg Protein−1 h−1) were observed in NSc + HA. In addition, the highest carbohydrate (46.99 mg g−1 FW), phenol (1129 mg GAE Kg−1 FW), and flavonoid content (1133 mg Catechin Kg−1 FW) and antioxidant activity (74.75%) were observed in ½ NS1 + HA. In addition, the highest relative water content (86.62%) and nitrate content (1106 mg kg−1 FW) were recorded in NS2 + HA and NSc, respectively. The application of HA combined with different concentrations of the nutrient solution under both irrigation levels caused an increase in most of the parameters studied in rocket plants compared to respective treatments without HA application. An analysis of wild kiwifruit (Actinidia callosa var. strigillosa) fruit samples from North Sikkim district of Sikkim state of Northeast India resulted in the identification of six promising female accessions, viz. SKNLA-11, SKNBC-01, SKNBC-02, SKNLC-02, SKNLC-07, and SKNZM-02. These selections exhibited significant variation in performance across desirable horticultural traits. Morphological parameters, including fruit weight (3.69–6.33 g), length (18.76- 26.71 mm), diameter (16.26- 19.76 mm), size (length × diameter) (342.56- 495.20 mm2), length-to-diameter ratio (1.03–1.57), stalk length (13.31–18.56 mm), and fruit yield (2.50- 8.50 Kg/vine), were assessed. Biochemical characteristics such as total soluble solids (17.20 −17.76 °B), titratable acidity (0.84–1.19%), total sugars (9.52–10.60%), reducing sugars (7.14–8.30%), non-reducing sugars (1.87–2.68%), sugar-acid ratio (8.26–11.33), ascorbic acid (31.20–41.60 mg/100g), and total phenols (33.31–94.88 mg GAE/100g) were examined. Sensory evaluation was carried out by a panel of judges, rating flavour (6.00–8.00), texture (5.40–8.20), aroma (5.80–8.50), taste (6.00–8.00) and overall acceptability (5.90–7.88) on a scale of 1 to 9. Notably, SKNBC-01, SKNLC-02, and SKNBC-02 excelled in overall acceptability. The okra crop, cultivated all over the globe, is a source of oil and protein. Despite the economic significance of okra in the livelihoods of millions of small-scale farmers, studies on the nutritional traits of okra are meager. Creating novel hybrid lines with desirable characteristics could be employed to maximize the nutritional quality of the okra plant, precisely the amount of anthocyanin content, phenols, and total antioxidants. We crossed an Egyptian variety, preferably in the market but with low production, with a highly productive Japanese variety with less nutritional value for consumers. The two okra genotypes with their hybrids and 16 segregating populations were arranged in a randomized complete block design. Approximate chemical analyses for primary and secondary metabolites were quantified for each genotype. The analysis of variances indicated a significant variation among okra genotypes in all the physiological and nutritional traits except for ascorbic acid content. Various traits revealed by Principal Component Analysis contributed distinctively to the total variation. Correlation analysis indicated some significant correlations between the nutritional characteristics. Protein contents had a positive and significant correlation with total antioxidant (0.521), 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (0.488), proline (0.498), flavonoids (0.474), and saponin (0.536). Leafy vegetables contain nutritious levels of vitamin C. Good postharvest management and food safety are the focus of reducing food loss. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of superoxide water in stabilizing the Vitamin C level and simultaneously prolonging the storage period for bok choy (Brassica rapa var. chinensis). The bok choy samples were immersed in superoxidised water [100 ppm Active chlorine concentration, neutral pH] and sodium bicarbonate solution for three different soaking periods: 5, 10, and 15 minutes and stored at 4°C. Weight loss, vitamin C, and chlorophyll content were evaluated during the 12 days of storage. The shelf life of bok choy treated with superoxidised water was extended from 3 days at room temperature to 8 days at 4°C. The results indicated that superoxidised water with a 5-minute treatment time could maintain a better quality of bok choy, which provides a cost-effective and sustainable alternative for chemical washing agents in the food industry compared to market-available sodium bicarbonate.
