Background: Children of parents with a mental illness (COPMI) have multiple psychological and developmental risks, including an increased lifetime risk of developing a mental illness themselves. Emotion regulation (ER) has been identified as a potential underlying mechanism of the transgenerational transmission of mental disorders. This study compares ER strategies in parents with and without a mental illness and their children. Further, it aims to examine the relationship between parents and children's psychopathology with a focus on the role of parental and child ER. Methods: Participants were 96 COPMI (77% female) and 99 children of parents without mental illness (COPWMI, 83% female) aged 4–16 years and their parents. Psychopathology and ER strategies of parents and children were assessed with a series of questionnaires. Results: Both COPMI and their parents showed significantly more psychopathology and more maladaptive and adaptive ER strategies in comparison with COPWMI and their parents. Parent and child adaptive ER strategies mediated the relationship between the psychopathology of parents and children only when child maladaptive ER strategies were low. Conclusions : The findings further our understanding of the processes by which parental psychopathology affects child outcomes. Our findings highlight the importance of implementing preventive programs that specifically target the reduction of maladaptive ER in children to interrupt the transgenerational transmission of psychopathological symptoms. Background: Among elementary-aged children (5-12yrs), summer vacation is associated with accelerated gains in Body Mass Index (BMI). A key behavioral driver of BMI gain is a lack of physical activity (PA). Previous studies indicate PA decreases during summer, compared to the school year but whether this difference is consistent among boys and girls, across age, and by income status remains unclear. This study examined differences in school and summer movement behaviors in a diverse cohort of children across three years. Methods: Children (N = 1,203, age range 5–14 years, 48% girls) wore wrist-placed accelerometers for a 14-day wear-period during school (April/May) and summer (July) in 2021 to 2023, for a total of 6 timepoints. Mixed-effects models examined changes in school vs. summer movement behaviors (moderate-to-vigorous physical activity [MVPA], sedentary) for boys and girls, separately, and by age and household income groups (low, middle, and upper based on income-to-poverty ratio). Results: Children provided a total of 35,435 valid days of accelerometry. Overall, boys (+ 9.1 min/day, 95CI 8.1 to 10.2) and girls (+ 6.2 min/day, 95CI 5.4 to 7.0) accumulated more MVPA during school compared to summer. Boys accumulated less time sedentary (-9.9 min/day, 95CI -13.0 to -6.9) during school, while there was no difference in sedentary time (-2.7 min/day, 95CI -5.7 to 0.4) for girls. Different patterns emerged across ages and income groups. Accumulation of MVPA was consistently greater during school compared to summer across ages and income groups. Generally, the difference between school and summer widened with increasing age, except for girls from middle-income households. Accumulation of sedentary time was higher during school for younger children (5-9yrs), whereas for older children (10-14yrs), sedentary time was greater during summer for the middle- and upper-income groups. For boys from low-income households and girls from middle-income households, sedentary time was consistently greater during summer compared to school across ages. Conclusions: Children are less active and more sedentary during summer compared to school, which may contribute to accelerated BMI gain. However, this differs by biological sex, age, and income. Simple Summary: Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is the most common childhood malignancy. Survival rates for children with ALL have improved, and today, more than 90% of children with ALL can be successfully treated. Acute pancreatitis (AP), which develops during chemotherapy for ALL can be a serious and fatal complication. It is a widely known toxicity, and several reports indicate that AP occurs with an incidence of 2–10% in patients treated for leukemia. It is mainly, but not exclusively, associated with the administration of asparaginase (ASP), which is one of the key components of multiagent chemotherapy used in ALL. The development of AP usually delays subsequent courses of chemotherapy and is the most common reason for the discontinuation of ASP, thus increasing the potential risk of leukemia relapse in children with ALL. Therefore, both the pathogenesis of AP in ALL and its impact on long-term outcomes remain to be thoroughly investigated. Purpose: This study aimed to identify the risk factors for acute pancreatitis (AP) and its impact on outcomes in Polish children treated for ALL. Methods: The study group included 2303 children receiving intensive chemotherapy for ALL. The group was divided into patients with at least one episode of AP and those who did not develop AP after treatment for ALL. Results: The cumulative incidence of AP in the study group was 4.08%. Older age was an independent risk factor for the development of AP (OR = 1.05; 95%CI = 1.006–1.098; p = 0.03). The overall mortality associated with AP was 2.13%. The probabilities of disease-free survival (p-DFS) and event-free survival (p-EFS) in both subgroups were 0.84 vs. 0.86, log-rank p = 0.65 and 0.75 vs. 0.80, log-rank p = 0.12, respectively. A total of 22 out of 94 patients (23.4%) with AP were re-exposed to asparaginase (ASP) during the subsequent treatment phases. Only one patient re-exposed to ASP (4.5%) developed a second episode of AP. There were no significant differences in p-DFS and p-EFS between patients re-exposed and not re-exposed to asparaginase (0.78 vs. 0.86, log-rank p = 0.27 and 0.63 vs. 0.79, log-rank p = 0.09, respectively). Conclusions: The incidence of AP in children with ALL is low and related to patients' age. The development of AP does not seem to influence p-DFS and p-EFS in children with ALL. Recurrence of AP after re-exposure to asparaginase in patients with ALL and a history of AP is low (4.5%). Background: Child and adolescent antidepressant use increased post-pandemic, but it is unknown if this disproportionally affected those who develop post-acute sequelae of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID) or long COVID. This study compared the risk of antidepressant initiation among children and adolescents with long COVID with those who had COVID but did not have evidence of long COVID. Methods: Our retrospective cohort study of children and adolescents aged 3–17 years at the first evidence of COVID or long COVID from October 1, 2021 through April 4, 2022 was conducted within Komodo's Healthcare Map™ database. The index date was the earliest date of a medical claim associated with a COVID (COVID comparators) or long COVID diagnosis (long COVID cases). The baseline period was six months before the index date. The outcome was antidepressant initiation within twelve months after the index date. Due to the large number of COVID relative to long COVID cases, COVID comparators were randomly selected with a ratio of 2 COVID to 1 long COVID. We used propensity score matching to control for confounding due to imbalances in the baseline covariates. Log-binomial models estimated the relative risk (RR) of antidepressant initiation in the propensity score matched sample. We conducted several sensitivity analyses to test the robustness of our findings to several assumptions. Results: Our child and adolescent sample included 18 274 with COVID and 9137 with long COVID. Compared with those with COVID, a larger proportion of long COVID children and adolescents had psychiatric disorders, psychotropic use, medical comorbidities, were previously hospitalized, or visited the emergency department. In the propensity score-adjusted analysis, the long COVID group had a statistically significant higher risk of antidepressant initiation relative to the COVID comparator (adjusted-RR: 1.40, 95% CI = 1.20, 1.62). Our findings were robust across sensitivity analyses. Conclusions: The increased risk of antidepressant initiation following long COVID warrants further study to better understand the underlying reasons for this higher risk. Background: The term "sharenting" describes the increasingly popular habit of parents to share photos, videos, or other information regarding their children on their social profiles, through online platforms. It is highly likely that many parents are posting content about their underage children online with little knowledge of the risks associated with this practice. This study aims to investigate whether variables such as parents' age, gender, marital status, occupation and educational level influence the practice of sharing child-related content and the degree of awareness. Methods: We performed a pilot cross-sectional study, based on an anonymous questionnaire. The questionnaire was administered to parents of underage children attending the pediatric outpatient clinic of the Umberto I Hospital, Sapienza University, in Rome, Italy, by researchers, through the google forms platform; qualitative variables were generated on excel sheets and a statistical analysis was performed on SPSS Ibm-statistics using the chi-square test. Results: Two hundred twenty-eight parents of children under 18 years of age completed the questionnaire (82% mothers, 18% fathers); 98% of the respondents used social media and 75% of them published their children's related content online. Thirty-one percent of the compilers started their practice of sharenting in the first 6 months of life of their child. Our analysis showed that compared to parents who do not post online, parents who usually post online their children are significantly more likely to be partial employees or unemployed (p = 0,002), with lower educational level (p = 0,05), younger (less than 35 years of age (p = 0,01)) and have a higher number of followers (p < 0,001). Finally, 93% of the compilers were not aware of the current legislation and of the risks related to the practice of sharenting. Conclusions: Pediatricians, healthcare assistants and preventive healthcare professionals should play a central role in alerting parents and families to the risks of sharenting; the results of our study could draw their attention to the increasing practice of sharenting and make healthcare professionals active part in the protection of children. Background: According to the World Health Organization's recommendation, delayed cord clamping in term newborns can have various benefits. Cochrane metaanalyses reported no differences for mortality and early neonatal morbidity although a limited number of studies investigated long-term neurodevelopmental outcomes. The aim of our study is to compare the postnatal cerebral tissue oxygenation values in babies with early versus delayed cord clamping born after elective cesarean section. Methods: In this study, a total of 80 term newborns delivered by elective cesarean section were included. Infants were randomly grouped as early (clamped within 15 s, n:40) and delayed cord clamping (at the 60th second, n:40) groups. Peripheral arterial oxygen saturation (SpO2) and heart rate were measured by pulse oximetry while regional oxygen saturation of the brain (rSO2) was measured with near-infrared spectrometer. Fractional tissue oxygen extraction (FTOE) was calculated for every minute between the 3rd and 15th minute after birth. (FTOE = pulse oximetry value-rSO2/pulse oximetry value). The measurements were compared for both groups. Results: The demographical characteristics, SpO2 levels (except postnatal 6th, 8th, and 14th minutes favoring DCC p < 0.05), heart rates and umbilical cord blood gas values were not significantly different between the groups (p > 0.05). rSO2 values were significantly higher while FTOE values were significantly lower for every minute between the 3rd and 15th minutes after birth in the delayed cord clamping group (p < 0.05). Conclusion: Our study revealed a significant increase in cerebral rsO2 values and a decrease in FTOE values in the delayed cord clamping (DCC) group, indicating a positive impact on cerebral oxygenation and hemodynamics. Furthermore, the DCC group exhibited a higher proportion of infants with cerebral rSO2 levels above the 90th percentile. This higher proportion, along with a lower of those with such parameter below the 10th percentile, suggest that DCC may lead to the targeted/optimal cerebral oxygenetaion of these babies. As a result, we recommend measuring cerebral oxygenation, in addition to peripheral SpO2, for infants experiencing perinatal hypoxia and receiving supplemental oxygen. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: The objective of this study was to develop and validate a nomogram for predicting the risk of an acute complicated course in pediatric patients with Acute Hematogenous Osteomyelitis (AHO). Methods: A predictive model was developed based on a dataset of 82 pediatric AHO patients. Clinical data, imaging findings, and laboratory results were systematically collected for all patients. Subsequently, biomarker indices were calculated based on the laboratory results to facilitate a comprehensive evaluation. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were conducted to identify factors influencing early adverse outcomes in AHO. A nomogram model was constructed based on independent factors and validated internally through bootstrap methods. The discriminative ability, calibration, and clinical utility of the nomogram model were assessed using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves, calibration plots, and decision curve analysis (DCA), respectively. The developed nomogram model was compared with previously published A-score and Gouveia scoring systems. Results: Logistic regression analysis identified delayed source control, suppurative arthritis, albumin on admission, and platelet to lymphocyte ratio (PLR) as independent predictors of early adverse outcomes in pediatric AHO patients. The logistic regression model was formulated as: Log(P) = 7. 667–1.752 × delayed source control − 1.956 × suppurative arthritis − 0.154 × albumin on admission + 0.009 × PLR. The nomogram's AUC obtained through Bootstrap validation was 0.829 (95% CI: 0.740–0.918). Calibration plots showed good agreement between predictions and observations. Decision curve analysis demonstrated that the model achieved net benefits across all threshold probabilities. The predictive efficacy of our nomogram model for acute complicated course in pediatric AHO patients surpassed that of the A-score and Gouveia scores. Conclusions: A predictive model for the acute complicated course of pediatric AHO was established based on four variables: delayed source control, suppurative arthritis, albumin on admission, and PLR. Background: SMA is a hereditary neuromuscular disease that causes progressive muscle weakness and atrophy. Several studies have shown that the burden of SMA is very high at many levels. Functional assessment tools currently used do not completely address the impact of the disease in patients' life. The objective of this qualitative study was to identify aspects of SMA that are relevant to patients and to design items useful for assessment purposes. Results: Five focus group sessions were run during an annual SMA families meeting in Madrid, Spain. Focus groups were composed by parents of SMA type I children, sitter children type II-III, parents of sitter children type II-III, adult patients, and parents of walker children. Two trained facilitators conducted the focus groups using a semi-structured guideline to cover previously agreed topics based on the input of a Scientific and Patient Advisory Committee. The guideline was adapted for the different groups. According to what was communicated by participants, SMA entails a high burden of disease for both patients and their parents. Burden was perceived in physical, psychological, and social areas. Patient's physical domain was the most relevant for participants, especially for parents of non-ambulant children, followed by limitations of motor scales to capture all changes, parents psychological burden, treatment expectations and patient's psychological burden. Ten domains were the main areas identified as impacted by the disease: mobility and independence, fatigue and fatigability, infections and hospital consultations, scoliosis and contractures, vulnerability, pain, feeding, time spent in care, breathing, and sleep and rest. Conclusions: This study confirms the necessity of evaluating other aspects of the disease that are not assessed in the functional motor scale. Measures of other aspects of the disease, such as pain, fatigue, feeding, should be also considered. A patient-reported outcomes instrument measuring such aspects in a valid and reliable way would be very useful. Background: Children with spastic diplegic cerebral palsy (CP) often demonstrate gluteus medius weakness that causes balance deficits and frequent falling during walking. Purpose: The aim of the study was to evaluate the combined effects of functional task training with electrical stimulation of bilateral hip abductor muscles on motor abilities (standing and walking) and balance in children with spastic diplegic CP. Methods: Thirty children with diplegic CP of both sexes whose ages ranged from 7 to 10 years were assigned randomly into two equal groups. For both groups, motor abilities were assessed by gross motor function measure (GMFM), and balance (static and dynamic) was assessed by the humac balance system before and after the study. The control group received a functional training program focusing on standing walking and balance exercises. While children in the study group received the same functional training program with bilateral electrical stimulation of gluteus medius muscles for 50 min. The treatment program for both groups was conducted for 3 sessions/week for 8 weeks. Results: There were statistically significant differences between the control and study group post-treatment in GMFM as well as the center of pressure test and weight shift test in favor of the study group (p < 0.05). Conclusion: Using functional task training with electrical stimulation for treatment of children with spastic diplegic CP have significant effects on improving their motor abilities and balance that suggests using it in rehabilitation for these children. (1) Background: The main goals of this study were to describe the physical activity (PA) and sleep habits of 8–12-year-old children according to their gender and to evaluate the relationship between PA and sleep habits (i.e., duration and timing). (2) Methods: A total of 236 children (114 boys and 122 girls) completed the Physical Activity Questionnaire for Older Children (PAQ-C) and an ad hoc sleep habits questionnaire. (3) Results: Boys were more physically active than girls (2.62 ± 0.51 vs. 2.46 ± 0.48, p = 0.026) and enacted higher PA levels in school recess (3.82 ± 1.36 vs. 3.56 ± 1.38, p = 0.003), during the afternoon (3.37 ± 1.20 vs. 2.89 ± 1.12, p = 0.003), and during weekends (3.54 ± 1.20 vs. 3.18 ± 0.48, p = 0.009). Per sleep habits, boys had a significantly later bedtime (21:53 ± 2:08 vs. 21:34 ± 2:14, p = 0.009) and a significantly smaller total sleep duration (9.64 ± 0.86 vs. 9.89 ± 0.87 h, p = 0.023) than girls. No significant correlations between PA and sleep habits were found. (4) Conclusions: We found differences in the PA and sleep habits between school-age boys and girls. Background: Early childhood dental caries, or ECC, is a significant global oral health concern associated with various adverse outcomes. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to investigate the potential link between maternal smoking during pregnancy and the occurrence of dental caries in children. Method: Through a comprehensive search of PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar databases for studies examining the correlation between maternal smoking during pregnancy and childhood caries, we identified 609 relevant articles up to October 2023. Studies were selected, and data extraction was based on the pre-established eligibility criteria and items. Meta-analysis was executed utilizing Comprehensive Meta-analysis (CMA) with a random effects model, ensuring a robust synthesis of the gathered evidence. Result: 7 cohorts and five cross-sectional studies, totaling 12 studies, were included in our analysis. The combined results from the studies revealed a significant association between maternal smoking during pregnancy and an increased risk of dental caries in children (OR = 1.78, 95% CI = 1.55–2.05, I2 = 68.53). Sensitivity analyses confirmed the reliability of our results. However, there were indications of publication bias, as suggested by the funnel plot and Egger's test (P = 0.011) concerning the connection between prenatal smoking and childhood caries. Conclusion: This review underscores the association between maternal smoking during pregnancy and childhood dental caries. Nevertheless, confounding variables influence this link, necessitating more large-scale, longitudinal studies with adjusted factors. Additional randomized control trials are needed to validate these findings due to the observed heterogeneity. Future research should investigate the precise reasons behind this association. Background: The gut microbiota is believed to influence neurodevelopment through the gut–brain axis, but prior studies have shown inconsistent results regarding early childhood antibiotic exposure and subsequent risk of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The purpose of this study was to evaluate the hypothesis that exposure to antibacterial agents in the first 2 years of life increases the risk of ASD and/or ADHD. Methods: This was a retrospective cohort study using 2003–2019 data from the National Health Insurance Research Database in Taiwan. Livebirths born between 2004 and 2016 were identified and separated into singleton, full sibling, and exposure-discordant sibling pair cohorts. The exposure group included children who filled at least one prescription for antibacterial agents between 0 and 2 years old in outpatient settings. The outcome, ASD and/or ADHD, was defined by at least one inpatient or outpatient diagnosis. The maximum follow-up age was 15 years in this study. Potential neonatal, maternal and paternal confounders were adjusted for. Cox proportional hazards models were used to estimate the relative event risk. Results: The final sample contained 946,581 children in the singleton cohort, 1,142,693 children in the full sibling cohort, and 352,612 children in the exposure-discordant sibling pair cohort. Antibiotic exposure marginally increased the risk of ASD and/or ADHD in the singleton cohort (adjusted hazard ratio [aHR]: 1.06, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.04–1.07) and in the full sibling cohort (aHR: 1.03, 95% CI: 1.01–1.04). A slight decrease in the risk of ASD and/or ADHD was observed in the exposure-discordant sibling pair cohort (aHR: 0.92, 95% CI: 0.90–0.94). Conclusions: The results suggest that early life antibiotic exposure has minimal impact on the risk of ASD and/or ADHD. Given that the estimated effects are marginal and close to null, concerns about ASD and/or ADHD risk increase should not postpone or deter timely and reasonable antibiotic use. Background: Postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) is a significant problem following paediatric surgery, and volatile anaesthetics are an important cause of this phenomenon. BIS-guided anaesthesia, by reducing the consumption of anaesthetics, leads to a decrease in PONV in adult patients. Study objective: Evaluate the role of BIS-guided anaesthesia in reducing the incidence of paediatric PONV. Design: Prospective, randomized, double-blind study. Setting: A single center study in university hospital in Czech republic, from June 2021 to November 2022. Patients: A total of 163 children, aged 3–8 years with ASA I-II who underwent endoscopic adenoidectomy under general anaesthesia were included. Interventions: In the intervention group, the depth of anaesthesia was maintained to values between 40 and 60 of BIS. Main outcome measure: The primary outcome was the incidence of postoperative nausea and vomiting during 24 h after surgery. Results: The use of BIS-guided anaesthesia led to a significant decrease in the incidence of nausea and vomiting compared to the control group [17% vs. 53%; RR (95%CI) 0.48 (0.27–0.86); p < 0.001and 16% vs. 34%; RR (95%CI) 0.33 (0.20–0.54); p = 0.01, respectively]. Background: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the complexity of malocclusion and existing patterns in children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) using the index of complexity, outcome and need (ICON). Methods: This cross-sectional study included children diagnosed with ASD, aged 9–15 years. A group of healthy children with the same demographic characteristics was randomly selected as the control group. Malocclusion was assessed according to ICON scoring protocol. The following parameters were recorded: dental aesthetics, upper arch crowding/spacing, presence of crossbite, anterior-vertical relationship (open and deep bite) and buccal segment anterior-posterior relationship. Finally, an overall ICON score was derived and reported for each patient. Descriptive analysis was performed for all investigated variables. Significance level was set at p < 0.05. Results: A total of 324 children, divided into ASD (162) and control (162) groups, comprised the study population. Our results demonstrated that the average overall ICON score was significantly higher in the ASD group compared to the control group (38.77 vs. 27.43, p < 0.001). ASD children also obtained significantly higher scores regarding the dental aesthetics component (3.84 vs 2.78, p < 0.001). Study groups were significantly different in terms of the prevalence of incisor overbite and open bite (p = 0.002 and p < 0.001, respectively). Patients in the ASD group showed a higher prevalence of Class II and Class III malocclusions (p < 0.001). Conclusion: ASD children obtained significantly higher overall ICON scores, indicating more complex and severe malocclusions. Background: The management of preoperative anxiety in pediatric patients, as well as its implications, has remained challenging for anesthesiologists. In this study, we compared the safety and efficacy of intranasal dexmedetomidine, midazolam, and ketamine as surgical premedication in children. Methods: This double-blinded randomized clinical trial was conducted at two tertiary hospitals in January 2014, on 90 children aged between 2-7 years old. The participants' American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) physical status was I or II, and they were scheduled for elective unilateral inguinal herniorrhaphy. Using the block randomization method, the patients were randomly assigned to three groups, each receiving intranasal dexmedetomidine (2 µg/Kg), midazolam (0.2 mg/Kg), and ketamine (8 mg/Kg) 60 min before induction of anesthesia. Anxiety and sedation state were evaluated before drug administration, and then every 10 min for the next 50 min. Parental separation anxiety, mask acceptance, postoperative agitation, pain, nausea, and vomiting were also recorded and compared between these groups. All the statistical analyses were performed using SPSS software (version 21.0). P<0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: Ketamine indicated the strongest sedative effect 10, 20, and 30 min after administration of premedication (P<0.001, P=0.03, P=0.01, respectively). However, dexmedetomidine was more effective than other drugs after 40 and 50 min (P<0.001). Other variables indicated no statistically significant difference. Conclusion: In case of emergencies, intranasal ketamine, with the shortest time of action, could be administered. Intranasal dexmedetomidine, which was revealed to be the most potent drug in this study, could be administrated 40-50 min before elective pediatric surgeries. Background: Posterior urethral valves (PUV) are the most common obstructive anomaly of the lower urinary tract in children. End-stage renal disease (ESRD) in 17% of the children is due to PUV. The present study helps know the spectrum of the disease, management options, and the outcome in these children. Methods: The present study is a descriptive type of study by review of medical records of all the children presented to the hospital from 2015 to 2019. Profile of PUV includes any abnormality in antenatal ultrasonography (USG), age at presentation, presenting complaints, general condition at the time of presentation, biochemical investigations like serum creatinine and electrolytes at admission, clinical progression during hospital stay and the type of intervention. Outcome variables studied were improvement in the stream and overall well-being of the child, renal function, recurrent urinary tract infections (UTIs). Follow-up period varied from 1 to 6 years. Results: A total of 73 patients were included in the study. The mean age of presentation was 3.4 years. The most common presenting complaints were poor urinary stream and dribbling of urine. Antenatal USG showed abnormality in 23 patients. Renal function was abnormal in 28 patients. Out of 73 patients, 51 underwent endoscopic ablation of valves, 19 underwent vesicostomy, and three patients underwent supravesical diversion. During the follow-up recurrent UTI was observed in 11 patients, 15 patients progressed to chronic kidney disease, and 15% of patients were hypertensive. Mortality in the present study was 4%. Conclusion: PUV includes a spectrum of diseases from mild form to lethal conditions. Objective: Child-oriented psychotherapies, such as Attention Process Training (APT), target ADHD symptoms directly, whereas family-oriented interventions, like Parent Management Training (PMT), address its functional impairments. The aim of this study was to compare the effectiveness of APT and PMT in treating ADHD symptoms. Method: This research was a randomized controlled trial in which 45 children (26 females and 19 males, with a mean age of 8.47 ± 1.66 years) with ADHD were selected conveniently and assigned randomly to one of three groups (PMT = 15, APT = 15, and CTRL = 15). The groups had no significant differences in ADHD severity. The PMT children were managed with parenting techniques. Children in the APT group practiced attention techniques, while children in the control group did not receive any intervention. Ritalin was prescribed to all the children in the three groups. The score on the Conners Parenting Rating Scale-Revised: Short form was the outcome variable. Results: Both interventions decreased ADHD symptoms severity more than the control group. Howver, the reduction in the APT group was more than in the PMT group (P-value < 0.001). The scores of 40% of the APT group and 80% of the PMT group did not fall below the cut-off point. In the APT group after the intervention, the inattention subscale was significantly lower than the hyperactivity subscale, while in the PMT group, the hyperactivity subscale was lower. The effect sizes of APT and PMT were 2.18 and 2.09, respectively. Conclusion: For ADHD, psychological interventions are crucial in addition to medication. According to the results of this study, APT is more effective for inattention symptoms, while PMT is more effective for hyperactivity symptoms. Objective: To determine the factors associated with the procalcitonin levels in newborns with hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) who received therapeutic hypothermia (TH). Materials and Methods: The neonates, who had moderate/severe HIE and were treated with TH, were included. The neonates were arranged into 2 groups by procalcitonin (PCT) level after rewarming was completed. The neonates who had a procalcitonin level of < 2.5 ng/ml constituted Group 1 and the ones who had a procalcitonin level of ≥ 2.5 ng/ml constituted Group 2. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression was used to assess the factors related with PCT level. Results: The first group included 123 (87.9%) neonates and the second group included 17 (12.1%) neonates. The median gestational age was 38 (36-39) weeks and the mean birth weight was 3081.7 ± 552.8 grams. In group 2, the rates for severe HIE, cesarean section, antibiotic switch, convulsion, inotrope use and mortality were higher, and duration of hospitalization was longer, whereas Apgar scores were lower (P < .05). The risk of a high procalcitonin level was found to be 6-fold (95% CI 1.9-19.1) higher in severe HIE and 5.2-fold higher (95% CI 1.7-16) in cesarean delivery. Conclusion: In neonates with HIE/TH, high post-rewarming procalcitonin levels were related with severe HIE and cesarean delivery. Objective: Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is a life-saving treatment option providing cardiopulmonary support when standard therapies prove insufficient for reversible diseases. The mean objective of this study was to evaluate our center’s experience with ECMO following pediatric cardiac surgery. Materials and Methods: This retrospective study was conducted in our pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) between November 2014 and March 2021 and included patients who received ECMO following cardiac surgery. Results: Over the 7-year period, 324 patients underwent cardiac surgery, of which 24 (7.4%) required ECMO support. Among them, 13 (54.2%) were female, with a median age of 16.0 (2.0-208) months and a median weight of 7.0 (3.5-70) kg. The mean vasoactive inotrope score (VIS) was 53.9 ± 44.5. Atrioventricular septal defect repair was the most common surgical procedure (n = 8/24, 41.6%). The primary indication for ECMO was low cardiac output syndrome (LCOS) in 14 (58.3%) patients. The median duration of ECMO support was 6.0 (1.0-46.0) days. Nonsurvivors had significantly higher Pediatric Risk Score of Mortality (PRISM) III scores (P = .014) and VIS scores during the pre-ECMO period (P = .004). Early or late neurological complications developed in 12 (50%) patients, with significant differences in lactate levels and pH levels pre-ECMO between those with and without neurological complications (P = .01, P = .02, respectively). We successfully decannulated 16 (66.6%) patients, with a final survival rate of 12 (50%). Conclusion: ECMO plays a crucial role in providing pre- and post-cardiac surgery support for children. Objectives: Coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic caused many changes in the social behaviors of individuals and the provision of health systems. Many studies revealed reductions in the number of diagnoses and delays in diagnosis time during the pandemic. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of the pandemic on the time to diagnosis of major diseases of pediatric pulmonology. Materials and Methods: Newly diagnosed patients with cystic fibrosis (CF), childhood interstitial lung disease (chILD), tuberculosis (TB), and primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD) were grouped into pandemic (group 1) and 2 consecutive pre-pandemic periods divided into equal intervals (groups 2 and 3). For each disease group, the time to diagnosis was compared between the specified periods. Results: A total number of patients were 171 in this study. In the CF group, there was no statistically difference in time to diagnosis between periods. In the chILD group, there was a statistically significant difference in time to diagnosis (P = .036) between groups (group 1: 2 months, group 2: 4 months and group 3: 10.5 months) that was not originated from pandemic period. In TB group there was no statistically significant difference between groups. In the PCD group, the impact of the pandemic on the time to diagnosis could not be clarified because the time interval to diagnosis (minimum: 2 years, maximum: 16 years) exceeded the studied periods (21 months). Background: Fundamental motor skills (FMS) and physical fitness (FIT) play important roles in child development and provide a foundation for lifelong participation in physical activity (PA). Unfortunately, many children have suboptimal levels of PA, FMS, and FIT. The Active Learning Norwegian Preschool(er)s (ACTNOW) study investigated the effects of a staff-led PA intervention on FMS, FIT, and PA in 3–5-year-old children. Methods: Preschools in Western Norway having ≥ six 3–4-year-old children were invited (n = 56). Of these, 46 agreed to participate and were cluster-randomized into an intervention (n = 23 preschools [381 children, 3.8 yrs., 55% boys]) or a control group (n = 23 [438, 3.7 yrs., 52% boys]). Intervention preschools participated in an 18-month PA intervention involving a 7-month staff professional development between 2019 and 2022, amounting to 50 h, including face-to-face seminars, webinars, and digital lectures. Primary outcomes in ACTNOW were cognition variables, whereas this study investigated effects on secondary outcomes. FMS was measured through 9 items covering locomotor, object control, and balance skills. FIT was assessed as motor fitness (4 × 10 shuttle-run test) and upper and lower muscular strength (handgrip and standing long jump). PA was measured with accelerometers (ActiGraph GT3X +). All measures took place at baseline, 7-, and 18-month follow-up. Effects were analysed using a repeated measures linear mixed model with child and preschool as random effects and with adjustment for baseline scores. Results: Participants in the intervention preschools showed positive, significant effects for object control skills at 7 months (standardized effect size (ES) = 0.17) and locomotor skills at 18 months (ES = 0.21) relative to controls. A negative effect was found for handgrip strength (ES = -0.16) at 7 months. No effects were found for balance skills, standing long jump, or motor fitness. During preschool hours, sedentary time decreased (ES = -0.18), and light (ES = 0.14) and moderate-to-vigorous PA (ES = 0.16) increased at 7 months, whereas light PA decreased at 18 months (ES = -0.15), for intervention vs control. No effects were found for other intensities or full day PA. Conclusions: The ACTNOW intervention improved some FMS outcomes and increased PA short-term. Further research is needed to investigate how to improve effectiveness of staff-led PA interventions and achieve sustainable improvements in children's PA, FMS, and FIT. Background: Epstein-Barr virus-associated lymphoproliferative disorders (EBV-LPDs) are a group of disorders involving lymphoid tissues or lymphocytes. The epidemiology and economic burden of hospitalized children with EBV-LPDs in China have not been well studied. This study aimed to reveal the epidemic characteristics and disease burden of EBV-LPDs among the Chinese hospitalized children, providing strategies for the prevention and management. Methods: This study was based on the FUTang Updating medical REcords (FUTURE) database of China and collected the medical records from 27 tertiary children's hospitals between January 2016 and December 2021 in China, counting five types of EBV-LPDs, namely EBV-positive T-cell lymphoproliferative disease, NK/T cell lymphoma, extranodal NK/T-cell lymphoma (nasal type), systemic EBV-positive T-cell lymphoproliferative disease of childhood and posttransplant lymphoproliferative disorders. We conducted a retrospective syhthesis and analysis of the epidemiological characteristics, expenses, length of stay (LOS), as well as complications among hospitalized children diagnosed with five types of EBV-LPDs and compared parameters using appropriate statistical tests. Results: The study described 153 children aged 0–18 years hospitalized with EBV-LPDs from 2016 to 2021 in the FUTURE database. The male-to-female ratio was 1.10:1, and more than half of the age distribution was in the 6–12 y group. Among EBV-LPDs cases, EBV+ T-LPD accounted for the largest proportion (65.36%). Complications were presented in 93 children with EBV-LPDs, mainly hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH). The median LOS of NKTL was 26.5 days [interquartile range (IQR) = 3–42], which was the longest among EBV-LPDs. The median hospitalization cost of PTLD was 10 785.74 United States dollars (IQR = 7 329.38–16 531.18), which was the heaviest among EBV-LPDs. Conclusions: Compared with the total number of hospitalized children in China during the same period and in the same age group, the proportion of EBV-LPD is very low. EBV-LPD can develop in all age groups, but it is more common in school-age children. Among 5 EBV-LPDs, the disease with the highest proportion is EBV+ T-LPD. The overall disease burden of EBV-LPD was heavy, especially the economic burden. HLH was one of the most common complications, which could directly affect the burden of patients because of prolonged hospitalization. These data are taken from a very large database, illustrating the epidemiological and economic burden of EBV-LPDs hospitalized children in China, which enriched the existing epidemiological and disease burden content of EBV-LPDs. Background Trauma is a significant cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide among children. Nonoperative management is the standard of care in hemodynamically stable children with blunt abdominal solid organ injury. Embolization is a potential pathway, which has shown increasing evidence for benefit in adult trauma patients. However, the data in children is limited. Materials and Methods A retrospective analysis of hospital data of all children (<18 years of age), presenting to a tertiary-care trauma center in India, with history of blunt trauma from January 2021 to June 2023, was performed. Preprocedural imaging, angiographic and embolization details, number of blood transfusions, and length of hospital stay were assessed. Results Two hundred and sixteen children (average age: 11.65 years) presented with a history of abdominal trauma during the study period. Eighty four children were FAST positive, out of whom, 67 patients had abdominal solid organ injury on computed tomography. Liver was the most commonly injured solid organ (n = 45), followed by the spleen and kidney. Ten children had solid abdominal organ arterial injuries for which eight children underwent embolization. The average length of hospital stay in embolization group (n = 8) was 4 days, as compared to 11 days in children undergoing operative management (n = 2). At 6 months follow-up, all children were asymptomatic. Conclusion Superselective embolization is a safe and feasible procedure in appropriately selected children with abdominal injury. Background and Aim: Early communication skills in children with hearing loss depend on the quantity and quality of information received from parents. The present study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of early communication skills training in developing the communication skills of infants and toddlers with cochlear implants. Methods: To this end, 54 infants and toddlers at the age range of 8–24 months with sever to profound hearing loss fitted by Cochlear Implant (CI) with their mothers participated in this study. The experimental and wait list control groups had auditory verbal therapy as the main intervention after the CI; however, the experimental group received a systematic early communication skills program. All subjects were assessed using the Communication and Symbolic Behaviour Scales Developmental Profile as the pre-and post-tests. Results: Multivariate analysis of covariance indicated the effect of systematic training on the early communication development of subjects in intervention group. Conclusion: Teaching the parents how to interact with infants and toddlers with CI could improve the communication skills of the infants and therefore it’s recommended to be included in the auditory rehabilitation programs. Acute malnutrition affects not only the growth and development but also the body composition of children. However, its specific effects have not yet been characterized. This study aims to compare the body composition of 5–7‐year‐old children with moderate acute malnutrition (MAM) to that of their well‐nourished (WN) peers and identify associated factors. A school‐based comparative cross‐sectional study was conducted from June to July 2022 in Jimma town, southwest Ethiopia. The study participants were selected from eight kindergartens and eight primary schools using a simple random sampling technique based on the proportional allocation of the sample to the size of the population in the respective school. Descriptive statistics and multivariable linear regression analyses were used to assess the mean differences and associations between variables and isolate independent predictors of body composition, respectively. The statistical significance was determined using ß‐coefficients with 95% confidence intervals and a p value of ≤ 0.05. Data were captured from 388 (194 MAM and 194 WN) children with a response rate of 97.9%. The mean fat‐free mass of WN children was significantly higher compared with those with MAM (p < 0.001). The mean (SD) of fat mass of MAM children was 4.23 ± 0.72 kg, 4.36 ± 0.88 kg and 4.08 ± 0.89 kg for 5, 6 and 7‐year‐olds, respectively. For WN children, the mean (SD) of fat mass was 4.92 ± 0.88 kg for 5 years old, 5.64 ± 1.01 kg for 6 years old and 5.75 ± 1.26 kg for 7 years old (p < 0.001). On the multivariable linear regression analysis after controlling for background variables, WN children exhibited 1.51 times higher fat‐free mass compared with MAM children (β = 1.51, p = 0.003). A unit increase in age of the study participants was associated with a 1.37 increment in fat‐free mass (β = 1.37, p < 0.001). WN children had 1.07 times higher fat mass compared with children with MAM (β = 1.07, p < 0.001). A unit increase in the age of the child resulted in 0.15 times increment in fat mass (β = 0.15, p = 0.020), and being female was associated with a 0.37 increase in fat mass (β = 0.37, p < 0.001). The results showed that the mean fat mass and fat‐free mass were significantly lower among moderately acute malnourished children than in WN children showing the loss of both body compartments due to malnutrition. The body mass index for age, age of the child and sex of the child were significantly linked to both fat‐free mass and fat mass. Key messages: This study demonstrated that children aged 5–7 years suffering from moderate acute malnutrition (MAM) have lower mean body fat mass (FM) and fat‐free mass (FFM) as compared with well‐nourished (WN) children.The substantial difference observed between MAM and WN children in body FM and FFM calls for the integration of MAM treatment into the routine health services to prevent their sliding down to SAM and associated mortality. Poor diet quality (diet diversity and animal‐source food [ASF] consumption) during childhood negatively affects growth, development, behaviour and physiologic function in later life. Relatively less is known about the impact of poor diet on the growth of school‐age children compared to children <5 years of age, especially in low/middle‐income countries. A better understanding of delivery strategies for effective interventions to improve diet and hence growth in school‐age children is needed. A 36‐month longitudinal controlled impact evaluation in rural Nepal assessed the nutrition and growth of children <5 years of age in families assigned via community clusters to full package intervention (community development, training in nutrition [during pregnancy and for children <5 years] and livestock husbandry), partial package (training only) or control (no inputs). Concurrent data were collected prospectively (baseline plus additional four rounds) on school‐age children (5–8 years at baseline) in these households; the present study analysed findings in the cohort of school‐age children seen at all five study visits (n = 341). Diet quality improved more in the full package school‐age children compared to those in partial package or control households. full package children consumed more ASF (β +0.40 [CI 0.07,0.73], p < 0.05), more diverse diets (β +0.93 [CI 0.55,1.31], p < 0.001) and had better head circumference z‐scores (β +0.21 [CI 0.07,0.35], p < 0.01) than control children. In conclusion, a multi‐sectoral community development intervention was associated with improvements in diet and growth of school‐age children in rural Nepal even though the intervention focused on the diet of children <5 years of age. The diet and growth of school‐age children can be favourably influenced by community‐level interventions, even indirectly. Background: A recent study has reported that the radiographic measurement of posterior tibial slope (PTS) is larger in male pediatric patients with tibial spine fractures (TSF) than in controls. However, they found no difference in PTS between female patients and controls. Purpose: (1) To identify whether PTS is larger in female pediatric patients with TSF than in female controls and (2) to validate the relationship between PTS and pediatric TSF in male patients. Study Design: Cross-sectional study; Level of evidence, 3. Methods: After an a priori power analysis, 84 pediatric patients with TSF (50 female patients and 34 male patients) and 84 age- and sex-matched controls were enrolled in this study. Demographic information, including sex, age, and race, was recorded. Skeletal maturity was determined based on the stage of epiphyseal union on knee radiographs. PTS was defined as the angle between a line perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the tibia and the posterior inclination of the medial tibial plateau on standard knee lateral radiographs. Results: The mean age when the TSF occurred was 11.2 ± 2.7 years for female patients and 12.9 ± 2.5 years for male patients. There was no significant difference in skeletal maturity between female patients and female controls or between male patients and male controls. The mean PTS was not significantly different between female patients (8.8°± 2.8°) and female controls (8.3°± 3.1°) (P =.366) or between male patients (9.0°± 2.8°) and male controls (9.3°± 2.6°) (P =.675). Those with a PTS >1 SD (2.9°) above the mean (8.8°) had no greater odds (1.0 [95% CI, 0.4-2.5]; P ≥.999) of having a TSF than others. Background: Respiratory infections, particularly bronchopneumonia, pose a significant health challenge in paediatric populations, often leading to respiratory distress and compromised well-being. In the context of managing bronchopneumonia in children, exploring non-invasive interventions becomes beneficial. The application of thoracic kinesiotaping is hypothesized to positively impact lung volumes by assisting respiratory function and facilitating breathing pattern. Methodology: To determine the effectiveness of thoracic kinesiotaping on the functional capacities in children with bronchopneumonia, a group of 32 children aged 5 to 12 years were selected adhering to specific inclusion criteria. These participants were then randomly assigned to two groups. Group A underwent conventional respiratory physiotherapy exclusively while Group B participants received a combination of thoracic kinesiotaping and conventional respiratory physiotherapy. Pre-intervention assessment included baseline data, pulmonary function tests (PFT), Paediatric Dyspnea Scale (PDS) and Chest expansion. The treatment protocol spanned a period of three days. Analysis of data was done through Instat software. Conclusion: The analysis revealed a notable increase in Forced Expiratory Volume in 1 second (FEV1) and the FEV1/Forced Vital Capacity (FVC) Ratio during pulmonary function testing (PFT), accompanied by a marginal improvement in chest expansion. Background: Neck circumference (NC) has been proposed as an indicator of upper trunk adiposity and a potential indicator of metabolic risk. The objective was to evaluate NC and its correlation with body fat percentage (BF%) and other indicators of adiposity in children with normal weight, overweight, and obesity. Methods: In a cross-sectional study, 112 children 5 to 10 years of age were included in the outpatient clinic from a public hospital. Measures of weight and height to calculate BMI (kg/m2), NC, mid-upper arm circumference, waist circumference, and tricipital skinfold thickness. Body composition measurements were performed using an electrical bioimpedance device (BIA). The relationship between anthropometric variables and BF% obtained by BIA was determined using Spearman correlation tests. Multivariate models were constructed with BF% as the dependent variable and anthropometric parameters as independent. Results: In the entire group, there was a direct correlation between NC and BF% (r = 0.50, p < 0.001), but lost statistical significance in the case of normal weight. The relationship maintained its significance in subjects from the overweight and obesity groups. In multivariate models, BMI exhibited the highest correlation with BF%, followed by waist circumference and mid-upper arm circumference; for NC, the R2 value was 0.30 (p < 0.001). Conclusions: Neck circumference is useful in the screening of population groups with the advantage of not requiring any specialized instruments for its measurement other than a tape measure. Introduction: Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) improves infant survival outcomes after cardiac arrest. If not feasible at the place of arrest, victims must be transported to a suitable room to perform ECMO while effective, sustained resuscitation maneuvers are performed. The objective of this simulation study was to compare the quality of resuscitation maneuvers on an infant manikin during simulated transfer on a stretcher (stretcher test) within a hospital versus standard stationary resuscitation maneuvers (control test). Methods: A total of 26 nursing students participated in a randomized crossover study. In pairs, the rescuers performed two 2 min tests, consisting of five rescue breaths followed by cycles of 15 compressions and two breaths. The analysis focused on CPR variables (chest compression and ventilation), CPR quality, the rate of perceived exertion and the distance covered. Results: No differences were observed in the chest compression quality variable (82 ± 10% versus 84 ± 11%, p = 0.15). However, significantly worse values were observed in the test for ventilation quality on the stretcher (18 ± 14%) compared to the control test (28 ± 21%), with a value of p = 0.030. Therefore, the overall CPR quality was worse in the stretcher test (50 ± 9%) than in the control test (56 ± 13%) (p = 0.025). Conclusions: Infant CPR performed by nursing students while walking alongside a moving stretcher is possible. Objective: This study compared postural control and neuromuscular activation in athletic swimmers (A-S) and non-athletic swimmers (N-A-S) in older children. Methods: Ten A-S and ten N-A-S underwent assessments of center of pressure (CoP) parameters under static and dynamic surfaces in two directions (dynamic mediolateral (DML) and dynamic anteroposterior (DAP)) in eyes-open (EO) and eyes-closed (EC) conditions, and electromyography (EMG) parameters under DAP and DML directions in EO and EC conditions. Results: Results showed that A-S demonstrated significantly superior postural control (p < 0.05), with smaller CoP area and lower CoP mean velocity compared with N-A-S, particularly in static with EC, DAP with EO and EC, and DML with EO conditions. A-S exhibited significantly larger neuromuscular activation amplitudes (p < 0.05), especially in the AP direction. Conclusions: These findings suggested that athletic swimming training may enhance postural control and neuromuscular activation in 11–13-year-old children, emphasizing the potential benefits of incorporating swimming exercises in these children. Background: Children with Down syndrome (DS) experience more difficulties with oral motor skills, including chewing, drinking, and swallowing. The present study attempts to measure the preliminary effectiveness of Global Intensive Feeding Therapy (GIFT) in DS. GIFT is a new rehabilitation program addressing the specific difficulties and needs of each child, focusing on sensory and motor oral abilities. It follows an intensive schedule comprising 15 sessions over 5 consecutive days, with 3 sessions per day. The principles of GIFT are applied with specific objectives for DS. Methods: GIFT was preliminarily implemented among 20 children diagnosed with DS. To measure the efficacy of GIFT, the Karaduman Chewing Performance Scale (KCPS), the International Dysphagia Diet Standardization Initiative (IDDSI), and the Pediatric Screening–Priority Evaluation Dysphagia (PS–PED) were used. Data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test before (T0) and after intervention (T1) and at one-month follow-up (T2). The effect size was also measured for specific outcomes, using Kendall's W. Results: Our findings revealed that children with DS showed no risk of dysphagia according to the PS–PED (mean score 2.80). Furthermore, statistically significant improvements in chewing performance were observed, as measured by the KCPS (p < 0.01), as well as in texture acceptance and modification, as measured by the IDDSI post-intervention (p < 0.01). For both the KCPS and IDDSI, a large effect size was found (Kendall's W value > 0.8). Parents/caregivers continued using GIFT at home, and this allowed for a positive outcome at the one-month follow-up. Background: Heart rate variability (HRV), an index of the functional status of the autonomic nervous system (ANS), provides an opportunity for early detection of ANS dysfunction. Lower resting, vagally related HRV parameters are associated with increased risk of physical and mental illness. External factors influencing the ANS, such as the testing environment, may impact the interpretation of HRV. This study's main aim was to determine the reliability of HRV resting and reactivity tests performed at home with children aged 4–9 years. Methods: Fourteen healthy children (female n = 8) aged 6.8 ± 1.5 years participated. Two HRV tests were performed at home via online supervision 7 days apart using a Polar H10 heart rate monitor. The absolute and relative reliability of the pre-exercise resting (5 min) and sub-maximal exercise step test recovery (4 × 30 s segments) HRV time and frequency domains were calculated. Results: The Pearson correlation coefficients for day 1 versus day 7 for the vagal activity HRV domains (RMSSD log) at rest and in the first 30 s and 30–60 s of recovery indicated good-to-excellent relative reliability (r > 0.8, p < 0.01). Absolute reliability was moderate for the resting RMSSD log, with a coefficient of variation (CV) of 5.2% (90% CI: 3.9, 7.8%), high for the first 30 s of standing recovery, with a CV of 10.7% (90% CI: 8.2, 15.7%), and moderate for 30–60 s of recovery, with a CV of 8.7% (90% CI: 6.6, 12.9%). Conclusions: The findings of this pilot study indicate that the resting and exercise recovery HRV measures of vagal activity can be measured reliably at home in children. Background/Objective: Weight gain is associated with numerous health complications and constitutes a serious public health problem. Motor competence (MC) can be a protective factor since children's participation and practice in physical activities can improve their health. The objective of this study was to investigate the impact of gender and BMI on MC [i.e., manual dexterity (MD), aiming and catching (A&C), balance (Bal), and total MC percentile (TP)] depending on gender (boy/girl) and BMI (normal weight, overweight or obesity). Methods: The MABC-2 battery was applied in a sample of 368 preschool children (5.69 ± 0.28 years of age; 54.9% girls). Results: Boys and girls showed statistically significant differences in MC components: boys had higher scores in A&C (p = 0.002), while girls excelled in MD (p < 0.001), Bal (p = 0.035); TP (p < 0.001), and BMI [Bal (p = 0.009); TP (p = 0.050)], with a higher percentile in those children with overweight in both cases. Statistically significant differences were also found in the interactions between gender*BMI [MD (p < 0.001) and TP (p < 0.001)]. Conclusions: The findings showed that there were notable variations in total percentile, balance, and manual dexterity between boys and girls. In addition, girls outperformed boys in all categories save aiming and catching. Background/Objectives: It is believed that outdoor play structures lead to more physical activity for kids during school recess. However, the intensity of this activity remains unknown. This study explored whether access to outdoor play structures during recess interferes with children's physical activity levels. Methods: Forty-one children (8–10 years old) accessed play structures during the afternoon recess but not in the morning for one entire week. To control for temperature differences, the same number of participants from another school who did not access playground structures were invited to participate. Moderate to Vigorous Physical Activity (MVPA) was determined using heart rate reserve. Heart rate was recorded using the Fitbit Inspire 2 (San Francisco, CA, USA) for at least three full school days. Wilcoxon signed-rank and Mann–Whitney U tests analyzed within- and between-group differences. Results: The findings show no difference in MVPA when accessing or not accessing outdoor play structures, both within groups [(n = 37) median (25th–75th) 16 min (7–30) vs. 14 min (5–22)] and between groups [(n = 22) 16 min (7–26)]. The weekly MVPA for all participants (n = 59) [172 min (117–282)] was the strongest variable associated with MVPA during recess [t(df) = 5.40 (38), 95% CI 0.04–0.09, p < 0.001]. Conclusion: accessibility to outdoor play structures does not increase MVPA during recess in children aged 8 to 10. Background/Objectives: As research on yoga with school children is growing, this study investigated the effects a semester of yoga versus physical education on children's physical activity and psychosocial indicators. Methods: Physical activity and psychosocial variables were assessed at Time 1 (January/February) and Time 2 (April/May) through self-report surveys (n = 157; 63% female, age: m = 10.38, sd = 0.81 years) for the intervention (Hatha yoga classes) and control groups (standard physical education classes). The intervention group was also observed regarding pedometer and System for Observing Fitness Instruction Time data. Results: The results revealed a trend towards an increase for the control and a decrease for the intervention group in stress levels. The pedometer results showed a trend towards an increasing number of steps/min. Skill practice had the greatest increase with time dedicated to that activity. The observation results revealed a significant difference in activity from Time 1 to Time 2. The major differences were decreases in sitting and being very active, and an increase in walking. Conclusions: Given the observation data and our study design limitations, the study results showed similarities between Hatha yoga and physical education in terms of increasing physical activity levels and psychosocial variables; thus, yoga may be a viable alternative to children's physical education in this regard. (1) Background: Preterm premature rupture of membranes (PPROM) has been associated with increased perinatal morbidity, but the effect of PPROM on respiratory disease has not been previously quantified. We hypothesised that PPROM would be associated with a higher incidence of invasive ventilation. (2) Methods: A retrospective cohort study at the Neonatal Unit at King's College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, London, UK, was conducted on infants born before 37 weeks of gestation. PPROM was defined as the rupture of membranes for >48 h. (3) Results: We reviewed 1901 infants (434 with PPROM) with a median (IQR) gestational age of 32.4 (28.7–35.0) weeks. The median (IQR) duration of rupture of membranes in the infants with PPROM was 129 (78–293) h. The incidence of invasive ventilation was 56% in the infants with PPROM and 46% in the infants without PPROM (p < 0.001). Following regression analysis, PPROM was significantly related to a higher incidence of invasive ventilation (odds ratio: 1.48; 95% CI: 1.13–1.92, adjusted p = 0.004) after adjusting for birth weight [odds ratio = 0.34; 95% CI: 0.33–0.43, adjusted p < 0.001], Apgar score at 10 min [odds ratio =0.61; 95% CI: 0.56–0.66, adjusted p < 0.001] and antenatal corticosteroid use (adjusted p = 0.939). Background: Food insecurity significantly impacts children's health, affecting their development across cognitive, physical, and socio-emotional dimensions. This study explores the impact of food insecurity among children aged 6 months to 5 years, focusing on nutrient intake and its relationship with various forms of malnutrition. Methods: Utilizing machine learning algorithms, this study analyzed data from 819 children in the West Bank to investigate sociodemographic and health factors associated with food insecurity and its effects on nutritional status. The average age of the children was 33 months, with 52% boys and 48% girls. Results: The analysis revealed that 18.1% of children faced food insecurity, with household education, family income, locality, district, and age emerging as significant determinants. Children from food-insecure environments exhibited lower average weight, height, and mid-upper arm circumference compared to their food-secure counterparts, indicating a direct correlation between food insecurity and reduced nutritional and growth metrics. Moreover, the machine learning models observed vitamin B1 as a key indicator of all forms of malnutrition, alongside vitamin K1, vitamin A, and zinc. Specific nutrients like choline in the "underweight" category and carbohydrates in the "wasting" category were identified as unique nutritional priorities. This study presents two simple physiotherapy programs that were implemented for five weeks and showed positive changes in balance, coordination, and motor skills in kindergarteners with ASD. Physiotherapy programs in a gym and games on a smart board with balance plates and an unstable base were applied to improve the physical condition of children with ASD. Thirty children with ASD (4–6 years old) attending special needs kindergarten were enrolled in the study. Three tests were used to assess participants' physical condition before and after the study: the modified Berg Balance Scale, the Imbalance Coordination Sample, and the Bruininks–Oseretsky Motor Proficiency Test (BOTMP). The resulting mean change, calculated from each group's scores, shows that the participants who received physical therapy sessions at the smart board had the greatest change of 1.58 points. It shows that the opportunity to play games on a smart board motivates children with ASD to work harder; therefore, it is a simple and easy way to engage children in different types of physical exercise. A slightly smaller change of 1.51 was obtained in the group that received gym sessions. However, working in the gym was more psychologically challenging for the children with ASD due to their lack of desire and motivation. Both methods are relatively simple and easy to apply at home; therefore, parents can make a significant contribution to improving children's physical condition and that can be an effective tool to assist these individuals with activities in daily life. Background: Significant improvement in neonatal care has enabled increasing survival of preterm infants. Metabolic bone disease of prematurity is often overlooked due to other comorbidities of preterm birth. The best approach is screening and prevention of the disease in high-risk infants such as preterm infants. Aim: We followed up the clinical, radiological, and serum biochemical markers of metabolic bone disease in extremely preterm infants (<28 weeks of gestation). The clinical applicability and validation of C-terminal telopeptide of type I collagen (CTX-I) as a novel bone turnover marker were assessed. Standard and novel biochemical bone turnover markers and quantitative ultrasound were compared. Method: Patients' data were collected from medical records. Assessments of calcium, phosphate, alkaline phosphatase, bone-alkaline phosphatase, CTX-I, and quantitative ultrasound were prospectively performed twice in 42 extremely preterm infants at postmenstrual ages of 30–32 weeks and 36–40 weeks. Bone mineral density was measured by quantitative ultrasound. Conclusion: Phosphate, alkaline phosphatase, bone alkaline phosphatase, calcium, or ionized calcium are not related to gestational age, but bone mineral density, measured by quantitative ultrasound, is related. Highlights: What are the main findings? Our paradigm suggested that listening to a story standing up while copying the experimenter's movements that mimicked the actions told in the story significantly improved the semantic short-term memorization of participants. Movement priming may be a useful tool to improve auditory short-term memory in children with ADHD in challenging retention conditions. What is the repercussion of the main findings? Our results could have repercussions for the management of children with ADHD at school, particularly in terms of the educational framework imposed during school time. More freedom of movement could facilitate learning for children with ADHD in the classroom. Aim: The aim was to evaluate the effect of body actions on learning process, particularly semantic memory capabilities in drug-naïve children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Method: Thirty children had to listen to a story which was repeated three times in a row and then a fourth time five minutes later. After each listen, the child was asked what she/he remembered from the story. The whole sample was split randomly into three subgroups of equal IQ (mean 102.2 ± 12.7), age (mean age 8 ± 0.6 years), sex (ratio female to male 1:5) and severity of ADHD symptoms (34.2 ± 7.4); a G1 "Freeze" subgroup, which implied listening to the story while sitting on a chair without moving; a G2 "Minimal" subgroup, which implied listening to the story while sitting on a chair but free movement was allowed; a G3 "Prescribed movement" subgroup, which implied listening to the story standing up, while copying the experimenter movements that mimicked the actions told in the story. Results: Although our sample was limited in size, interestingly, children in the G3 subgroup showed the highest short-term semantic memory retention compared to G1. In all subgroups, repetition allowed an increase in performance. Conclusions: Our exploratory findings stress the positive role of movement in children with ADHD to increase semantic memorization. Hyperactivity may counteract the deficit of memorization related to attention impairment in children with ADHD. The role of parental factors in the emergence of post-traumatic stress symptoms (PTSSs) following pediatric surgeries is well recognized, but the specific influence of parents' subjective preparedness for their child's surgery has not been explored. In a study involving 253 children hospitalized in a pediatric surgery ward, parents completed a demographic questionnaire during their child's stay, which included the question, "As a parent, have you been prepared for the surgical intervention your child is undergoing?" Four months post-surgery, the same parents were interviewed using two questionnaires that evaluated their children's post-traumatic symptoms. Our findings indicate that in emergency surgical settings, children whose parents felt prepared experienced significantly fewer PTSSs compared to children whose parents did not feel prepared. In contrast, for elective surgeries, parental subjective perception of preparedness did not significantly impact the children's PTSSs. We conclude that for emergency surgical procedures, addressing parents' subjective preparedness could be crucial. Background: Specific learning disorder (SLD) is a neurodevelopmental condition characterised by significant academic difficulties despite normal intelligence and adequate education. The difficulties with reading, writing, and arithmetic may manifest independently or concurrently at different ages. Early symptoms may appear in preschool, including delays in social skills, motor skills, and language development. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of preschool children at risk for SLD and related psychiatric disorders. Method: Data were collected from 515 preschool children in Edirne City, Turkey, using a screening scale for early symptoms of SLD. Socio-demographic information was obtained, and children at risk were invited for a psychiatric evaluation. Results: The mean age of the participants was 72.5 ± 5.6 months. It was determined that 5.7% of the preschool children who participated in the questionnaire were at risk of SLD according to the screening scale scores. Factors such as a father's low education, the mother smoking during pregnancy, a longer stay in the neonatal intensive care unit, longer screen time, and consanguinity between parents were associated with an increased risk of SLD. Conclusion: This study emphasises the importance of early identification and intervention for SLD and the need to consider associated psychiatric comorbidities. Background and Aims: Anxiety is one of the most important issues in the dental environment for children. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of music on the level of anxiety and cooperation of children during dental treatment. Materials and Methods: In this study 58 children aged 6 to 8 years were randomly divided into two groups: the intervention group (music played) and the control group (no music played). Children's anxiety was assessed using the Venham Picture Test and Frankel Behavior Rating Scale, and their heart rate was also measured. Results: The results showed that in the intervention group, the level of anxiety based on the Venham Picture Test and Frankel Behavior Rating Scale was significantly lower. Additionally, the heart rate of children in this group was lower during the treatment (P<0.05). Conclusion: Based on the findings of this study, the use of music as a non-pharmacological method can be beneficial in reducing anxiety and improving the cooperation of children in the dental environment. Objective: The present study aimed to investigate the long-term effects of parent–child separation during infancy and early childhood on depression, social relationships including parent–child and peer relationships, and academic performance during adolescence and early adulthood. Methods: Data from the China Family Panel Studies (CFPS) were analyzed, which included a sample of 3829 children aged 4–15 years from 25 provinces over a period of 8 years. The study examined the association between early parent–child separation and outcomes related to depression, social and academic performance, comparing outcomes between individuals with and without early separation experiences. A series of subgroup analyses were conducted to further explore these associations. Results: Parent–child separation lasting 3 months or longer was found to be associated with moderate to severe levels of depression and impaired social relationships during adolescence and early adulthood, particularly among males, adolescents, urban dwellers, and those with less educated mothers. Children who experienced parent–child separation for 3 months or longer showed a positive correlation between separation duration and depression. Short-term separations under 3 months did not show this association. The duration of separation also had a negative correlation with parent–child and peer relationships, as well as academic performance. Conclusion: Early parent–child separation has significant adverse effects on the mental health, social and academic performance of adolescents and early adulthood, especially among males, adolescents, urban residents, and those with lower maternal education. The severity of depression was found to be related to the duration of separation, highlighting the importance of minimizing separation to less than 3 months for children under the age of 3. Background: Children with congenital heart diseases (CHD) may have developmental delays including delayed language development (DLD) and learning difficulties. The purpose of this study was to observe the effects of CHD on language developmental profile and scholastic achievement (SA) with particular emphasis on prevalence of DLD and SA, potential risks, and need for early intervention. Results: This case–control study included 158 children with CHD and 145 healthy children as controls. Participants' ages ranged from 6 months to 15 years. Data were collected by reviewing clinical records and questionnaires covering potential risks, motor and language development, and SA. Potential risks were analyzed using the Fisher test, while language development and SA were compared using Mann–Whitney test. The incidences of parent consanguinity, family history of DLD, and neonatal cyanosis were higher than expected by chance in the CHD group with p-values which are < 0.001, 0.044, and < 0.001, respectively. The CHD group revealed more delay in babbling, first word production, two-word sentences, three-word sentences, narration, and SA than control group with significant differences. These comparisons' p-values are 0.002, < 0.001, 0.009, 0.029, 0.03, and 0.042 respectively with mean effect size 0.3. The language development profile in cyanotic HD showed more delay than acyanotic HD with significant differences. Conclusions: The DLD and affected SA were more prevalent in children with CHD. The risk for DLD in CHD children was multifactorial; however, the main predisposing factor was chronic hypoxia that starts in the intrauterine life in CHD. Neonates with CHD require early intervention through oxygen therapy before surgery. Early family counseling and language therapy are recommended to improve quality of life through achieving better communicative ability and academic skills. Further studies which concerned the effect of maternal oxygenation on prognosis of fetuses with CHD may be required. Also, duplication of the study including formal testing is recommended. Background: The word-in-noise discrimination test evaluates the phonological aspect of speech based on the detection of the vowels. While word-in-noise perception (WINP) test is one of the speech perception exams and evaluates the ability to understand the meaning of words by discovering the consonants. Until now, all word-in-noise tests have assessed speech discrimination performance, and for the first time, the normal values of the WINP test for adults have been determined. Since the normal values of WINP scores in children have not been reported, our research aimed to determine the normal values of the WINP test in children aged 5 to 13 years. In this cross-sectional study, 120 Persian speaking Iranain children with normal hearing thresholds were evaluated from the beginning to the end of spring 2023. We divided them into 4 age groups (A = 5–7 < years, B = 7–9 < years, C = 9–11 < years, D = 11–13 < years). The evaluations included general audiology tests and WINP tests using homtonic-monosyllabic words (HMWs) at a signal-to-noise ratio of 5 dB. Results: Significant difference was observed between the mean scores of the WINP test in age group A (54%) compared to age group B (66%), (Pv = 0.04). Also, the differences between the mean scores of age group A compared to age groups C (70%) and D (69%) were significant (Pv = 0.01, Pv = 0.03). Conclusions: This article presented the norm values of WINP test scores for Persian speaking Iranian children aged 5 to 13 years. The norm values of WINP test scores in the age group of 5–7 years were lower than in the age groups of 7–13 years. Purpose: This study aimed to assess the incidence of EEG abnormalities (EEG-ab) in children diagnosed with ADHD, investigate the risk of epileptic seizures (SZ) and maintenance on methylphenidate (MPH) over a three-year period. Methods: A total of 517 ADHD children aged 6–14 years were included. Baseline assessments included the identification of EEG-ab, ADHD inattentive subtype (ADHD-I), comorbid epilepsy, the use of antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) and the use of MPH. At the 3-year follow-up, assessments included the presence of EEG-ab, maintenance on MPH, AED usage, SZ risk in cases with EEG-epileptiform abnormalities (EEG-epi-ab), compared with control ADHD cases without EEG-epi-ab matched for age and gender. Results: EEG-ab were identified in 273 (52.8%) cases. No statistically significant differences were observed between the EEG-ab and EEG-non-ab groups in terms of age, gender, ADHD-I type or initial use of MPH. EEG non-epileptiform abnormalities (EEG-non-epi-ab) were found in 234 out of 478 (49%) cases without EEG-epi-ab. Notably, EEG-non-epi-ab occurred more frequently in the group of 39 cases with EEG-epi-ab (30/39 (76.9%) vs. 9/39, (21.3%), a subset selected for 3-year follow-up. At 3-year-follow-up no statistically significant difference was found in maintenance on MPH in ADHD cases with and without EEG-epi-ab. Nobody of ADHD cases without comorbid epilepsy or with comorbid epilepsy with achieved SZ freedom developed new SZ. Only 3 children with drug resistant epilepsy experienced SZs, without increase in SZ frequency. The disappearance rate of EEG-epi-ab was higher than that EEG-non-epi-ab (71.8% vs. 33.3%). Conclusions: Children with and without EEG-ab exhibited similar patterns of MPH use (initial use, positive response, and maintenance on MPH). The presence of comorbid epilepsy and EEG-ab, with or without EEG-epi-ab, was not associated with an increased risk of SZ despite the use of MPH. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: One of the most prevalent health problems affecting children worldwide is untreated caries in primary teeth. Agents to arrest caries are used to manage untreated decay in children in disadvantaged communities. Nano Silver Fluoride (NSF) overcomes the staining problems of Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF). This study compared the clinical cariostatic effect of NSF to 38% SDF for arresting caries lesions. Methods: The study included 360 children younger than 4 years, with at least one active lesion, ICDAS score ≥ 3, recruited from nurseries in a rural area in Alexandria, Egypt, in 2022. They were randomly assigned to receive a single application of NSF at baseline, or two applications of SDF at baseline and after 6 months. The arrest of active carious lesions was assessed after 6 and 12 months using ICDAS criteria, and parents' satisfaction with child appearance was also assessed. Chi-Square test was used to compare the groups and multi-level multiple logistic regression was used to assess the effect of the intervention on caries arrest at lesion level and binary logistic regression was used to assess the effect at patient level. Results: 1853 active lesions were included in children whose mean (SD) age was 42.3 (8.2) months. The arrest rate was significantly higher in the NSF than the SDF group at lesion level (78.4% and 65.0% at 6 months and 71.3% and 56.3% at 12 months, p < 0.001). In regression analysis, NSF had significantly higher odds of caries arrest than SDF at lesion level (at 6 months, AOR = 2.57, 95% CI: 1.55, 4.26 and at 12 month, AOR = 3.27, 95% CI: 1.89, 5.67). Parents of children receiving NSF had significantly greater satisfaction with their children's dental appearance than those receiving SDF: (97.2% and 76.1%, respectively, p < 0.001). Conclusion: NSF demonstrated greater effectiveness in arresting caries in preschool children without inducing black staining of teeth and with greater parental satisfaction than SDF. NSF can be an alternative to SDF in arresting caries especially in underprivileged communities.
