During the last couple of years, the Texcoco coat of arms has received much attention, yet there is no agreement on the interpretation of some of its heraldic elements or its date and authorship. In this article the author presents a new iconographic study accompanied by a review of an important part of Texcoco's history to demonstrate that the goal of the artist who painted this coat of arms was to exalt that city's most significant political events: Nezahualcoyotl's conquest of the Acolhua capital of Coatlinchan and the relocation of its court to Texcoco. Various additional aspects suggest that this coat of arms pertains to the first half of the seventeenth century; they also provide clues to the possible identity of the intellectual author of this shield. We recorded the presence of an individual of Ruddy Duck (Oxyura jamaicensis) with diluted plumage and two of the Northern Shoveler (Spatula clypeata), one with progressive graying and another one with partial leucism in Lake Nabor Carrillo, Texcoco, State of Mexico. These observations represent the first records of aberrant coloration for these species in Mexico. Documenting such cases can help to understand the frequency of chromatic aberrations, as well as mechanisms of speciation in different groups of birds. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Only one of two opening compositions in the Codex Xolotl has been recognized. The conventional version shows the entry of Xolotl, Nopaltzin, and six lesser rulers into the Basin of Mexico from near Tula, Hidalgo, followed by settlement at Xoloc and later a place that will become Tenayuca. The manuscript’s two larger fragments, assembled correctly for the first time, show Xolotl and Nopaltzin observing and moving across a more settled eastern basin into regions to the south ranging from Puebla to Morelos, notably including Cuernavaca. At the same time, they and their six followers are shown settled among caves in the western basin around the future Tenayuca. The two Chichimecs attract fellow Chichimecs from the Cuernavaca region to the Tepetlaoztoc region and trouble ensues. These two realizations of a Chichimec vision of empire are well recorded by the remarkable Aztec graphic communication system. Its portrayal of changes to different ways of life over the centuries reveals an interplay of an oral gathering and hunting culture with a settled society, recording the Chichimec experience and their own way of life with their combined oral and graphic system. Elements of the Chichimecs’ visions of empire endure throughout the Codex Xolotl as its messaging power shines across the contact period and into early colonial times. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A recent study conducted by researchers from Colegio de Postgraduados in Texcoco, Mexico, evaluated the sustainability of two types of agave tequilana Weber var. blue agroecosystems in Tequila, Jalisco. The study compared monoculture and polyculture agroecosystems and found that polyculture was more sustainable in 13 out of 15 indicators evaluated. The research concluded that the evaluation of sustainability determined that the Agave tequilana polyculture agroecosystem is more sustainable than monoculture. This study provides valuable insights into the environmental and social consequences of agave farming practices in the tequila industry. [Extracted from the article]

- Abstract
Leucism is a chromatic aberration, defined as the absence of melanin that is expressed in whole or in part of the plumage of a bird. We recorded an individual adult of American Coot (Fulica americana) with leucism in Lake Nabor Carrillo in Texcoco, State of Mexico. The American Coot is a bird with a wide geographic distribution, common in aquatic habitats from Alaska to northern South America. We observed this Coot on 29 and 31 May and 26 June 2020, in Lake Nabor Carrillo. Although there are several reports of birds with leucism, this record represents the first documented case of leucism for this species in Mexico. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Before the year 1519, the Valley of Mexico was a closed basin and at the bottom of the valley, an extensive system of shallow lakes was formed. Within this lacustrine system, the capital of the Aztec empire, Tenochtitlan, was built. The Aztecs were known for their impressive constructions and complex hydraulic structures, of which the most impressive structure was the Nezahualcoyotl dike. This structure was constructed across Lake Texcoco. Its principal function was to protect the city of Tenochtitlan from high water levels at the lake. However, there is not enough information about the reliability of this dike. Mainly due to two reasons, today there are no remains left of the dike and most of the lacustrine system is drained. In this paper, we present a method to study the reliability of the Nezahualcoyotl dike under two failure modes, overturning and sliding. This is done by following up on the work presented by Torres-Alves & Morales-Nápoles (2020) where they developed a hydrological characterization of the lacustrine system and studied the dike under one failure mode, overflow. The proposed analysis aims to provide a more realistic assessment of the reliability of the dike as a flood defense mechanism., Green Open Access added to TU Delft Institutional Repository ‘You share, we take care!’ – Taverne project https://www.openaccess.nl/en/you-share-we-take-care Otherwise as indicated in the copyright section: the publisher is the copyright holder of this work and the author uses the Dutch legislation to make this work public., Hydraulic Structures and Flood Risk

This article presents some results of the study of the pictographic map of Patlachiuhqui and Moyotepec, Texcoco (ca. 1592). This map illustrates significant features that make it possible to reconstruct the water and soil landscape of the area of Acolhuacan in the eastern region of the Valley of Mexico. Of particular interest is the continued use of two aqueducts, possibly constructed by Nezahualcoyotl in the 15th century, that today have been turned to new purposes. The study is based on the analysis of the different spaces, drawings, glyphs and glosses portrayed on this pictographic map, information contained in documents included in the background file, and other historical sources. The construction of the New International Airport of Mexico in the Texcoco has caused fierce controversy between the government, business and society. It has been questioned from the selection of the place, the contractual bidding process and even legal-environmental irregularities, being this last dimension object of analysis of the present investigation. The deductive-inductive, analysis-synthesis and sociological were used as methods. As main result was the lack of observance of the Mexican legal order to execute said constructive megaproject, opposition of the citizens directly affected by the works and that the popular consultation is an effective instrument in the decision making by the public power. - Abstract
Researchers at Colegio de Postgraduados in Texcoco, Mexico have conducted a study on the effects of selenium on gene expression in in vitro follicles of ewes. The study found that selenium activated gene expression in the follicles, some of which were related to the immune system. The researchers identified 2,538 differentially expressed genes, with 94 genes involved in immune processes. The study suggests a possible immune pathway related to follicular apoptosis regulation. The research was supported by Consejo Nacional de Ciencia y Tecnologia (CONACyT) and has been peer-reviewed. [Extracted from the article]

The term “Aztecs” is being mostly used as a collective name of the inhabitants of three in the Valley of Mexico (in Central Mexico) situated allied prehispanic city-states Tenochtitlan, Texcoco, and Tlacopan. Although in recent decades various aspects of the Aztec culture have been intensively researched, no systematic interest awakened for the Aztec law. The study deals with the current state of research of the Aztec law, the written and unwritten sources of its knowledge, its fundamental characteristics as a research object, and its social and cultural-historical context. The paper shows that a systematic research of the Aztec law should focus not only on the Aztec law as such, but also on its social, economic, political, and cultural contexts as well as on the Aztec worldview (ideology, religion).

- Abstract
The irrigation units in México suffer problems due of the urban expansion that demand greater water access, which put in risk the existance of the small irrigation in the country. The missing of the irrigation units would provoke the loss of agricultural and environmen tal biodiversity. Nevertheless, there are other aspects threatened that are the historic and cultural values deposited into these units, which their beginnings are in Mesoamerican period and they keep the territory alive. For this reason, the objective of this text is to analyses some of the historic and cultural values in the cultural landscape in the irrigation units that are in risk of missing due to the urban expansion of the last decades. For it, was selected the study case of the Coxcacuaco River Irrigation Unit, Texcoco, ubicated into the Mexico of Basin, one of the areas with higher population concentration and hydric deficit. Through the realization of interviews to the Unity Committee and the users, like the revision of historic documents it was possible to understand that some of these va lues are the admiration for the mesoamerican understanding over the hydric resources, the fighting to guarantee the irrigation access and the feeling of intercommunity union., Resumen: Las unidades de riego en México atraviesan problemas derivados de la expansión urbana que demanda mayor acceso al agua, lo que coloca en riesgo la continuidad de la peque ña irrigación en el país.

Abstract: In a dance of Moors and Christians in the region of Texcoco, the character playing the role of St. James wears a realistic mask known as the Divine Face. People reject calling it a “mask” because they consider it a miraculous object, and they believe the person who wears it becomes a saint, or even Jesus Christ. This paper documents the practices and beliefs centered on the Divine Face, and the rules that must be observed by those who are in close contact with him, so he will “be happy”. We briefly review studies concerning the personification of gods, pointing out similarities between the ethnographic material and the concept of ixiptla among the ancient Mexicans. We discuss the distinctive features of the described phenomenon, and present a proposal of how this concept has persisted in spite of the apparent modernization of the region.Résumé : Dans le cadre d’une danse de Maures et Chrétiens de la région de Texcoco, le personnage de Saint-Jacques porte un masque réaliste appelé Divino Rostro (Divin visage).

- Abstract
A shallow non-destructive geophysical survey was conducted in the archaeological site of Chapingo in the Texcoco Region, Mexico. The survey combines the application of Seismic Refraction Tomography and Magnetometry in order to identify and differentiate geological and archaeological features in the first 10 m of the subsoil. The results and the characteristics of the seismic and the magnetic anomalies depicte features suggesting the presence of structures like a water-well, transit or irrigation channels, dams and mounds or tlatels. A SE-NW oriented riverbed was also identified. Based on the geologic and human histories of the region, we suppose the riverbed dates from the Pre-Historic period, and that the other structural features have a Pre-Hispanic and/or Colonial origin. Our findings exemplify that the combination of geophysical tech-niques is a precise, detailed and high-resolution tool appropriate to solve ar-chaeological and civil engineer problems. The postclassic Huexotla site in the Basin of Mexico is one of the late archaeological zones featuring monumental architecture which are still candidates, although currently invaded by the great urban spot and mainly because of the presence of non-yet liberated mounds, to be explored by specialized academic teams. - Abstract
The article focuses on the delinquency existing in pre-Hispanic Tenochtitlan and Texcoco as a particular type of human behavior, having many concrete forms that the wider society perceived (and condemned) through certain concepts and that it sought to both prevent and suppress. The first part of the article deals with the reflections and forms of delinquency existing in Tenochtitlan and Texcoco. In the second part of the article the mechanisms of prevention and repression of delinquency are examined. Although the pre- Hispanic society existing in Tenochtitlan and Texcoco can be considered as a so-called shame culture, in the conclusion of the article it is suggested that it could be a shame culture, which over time has changed, to a certain extent, to a so-called guilt culture.

As a result, at the bottom of the valley, an extensive system of shallow lakes, lagoons, and swamps was formed due to precipitation and permanent river’s discharge from the Sierra Nevada mountains. This lacustrine system occupied around 1000km2 of the total surface of the valley. Lakes Zumpango, Xaltocan, Chalco, Xochimilco, Texcoco, and Mexico were distinguished. The capital of the Aztec empire, Tenochtitlan, was founded and built on an island in the middle of Lake Mexico. The Aztecs were known for their impressive constructions and hydraulic structures. At the time of the Spanish conquest, they had a complex system of approximately 95 hydraulic structures (Palerm, 1973), of which the most impressive one was the Nezahualcoyotl dike. This structure was roughly sixteen kilometers long, eight meters’ height and three and a half meters’ width. Its principal function was to protect the city of Tenochtitlan from high water levels in Lake Texcoco. Nowadays, there are no remains of the dike and most of the lakes were drained. The purpose of this thesis is to characterize the lacustrine system and the Nezahualcoyotl at the time of the Spanish conquest of Mexico City dike by using historical documentation and present-day climate and terrain data. This in order to assess the reliability of the dike as a flood defense mechanism and to compare it to modern safety levels. The dike was tested for one failure mechanism: Overflow. A Markov chain and Copula models are proposed in order to create a synthetic time series of precipitation and evaporation. Through a hydrological balance, the water elevation at Lake Texcoco was obtained. In this way, it was possible to provide an estimation of the water level fluctuation in the lake each year during the wet season. In total, a thousand years of synthetic data were generated. • Reliability analysis on flood defences designed without probabilistic criteria. • Characterizing precipitation and evaporation time series • Generation of water level data using copulas, Markov chains, and hydrological data. • The resulting probability of failure is consistent with historical sources. In some cases, hydraulic infrastructures of different sizes and importance are built without formal design criteria and it may be desired to infer the reliability level for which it was originally designed. In this paper, we present a method to perform the reliability analysis of a dike that was, in all likelihood, designed without probabilistic criteria. This is the Nezahualcoyotl dike, an ancient structure built by the Aztec empire around 1445 in modern-day Mexico City. The method consists of 1. Characterizing time-series of relevant environmental variables. We use precipitation and evaporation by combining a discrete time-state Markov chain with a copula-based stochastic process. 2. Simulating from the time series model a large number of observations to "load" the structure of interest and finally, 3. Compute the probability of failure of the structure with respect to a failure mechanism. In this case, we focus on overflow. The proposed model is able to reproduce to a good extent the hydrology of the system. The return period for overflow obtained in our research is consistent with historical accounts. This work can be used as a reference to assess the reliability of other (ancient or present-day) structures whose design is based on informal criteria. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
The reduction of agricultural land and changing the relationship between state and society encourages the demarcation of the first of its social responsibilities, since the establishment of the neoliberal state. The change of use of agricultural land and increased urban area show that the reduction of this soil is the result of the null value as a natural resource in the shaping of public policies. The aim of the paper is to show the population growth of the municipalities of the region of Texcoco, State of Mexico, and the decrease of agricultural land as a result of the change of the development model implemented by the Mexican authorities. The preservation of agricultural land and activities that characterize can stimulate sustainable development in the municipalities of the region of Texcoco, State of Mexico., La reducción del suelo agrícola y la modificación de la relación entre el Estado y la sociedad fomenta el deslinde del primero en cuanto a sus responsabilidades sociales, debido a la instauración del estado neoliberal. Fray Pedro de Gante (Pieter van der Moere) was an important evangelist and teacher in the New Spain. With two of his fellow missionaries, Fray Juan de Tecto and Fray Juan de Ayora, he led the way in the difficult task of learning the language of those to be converted and becoming an example of holiness, humility and generosity. Fray Pieter van der Moere was loved and respected for his industriousness to learn Nahuatl and the culture of its speakers. In this article, his work is analyzed taking into account his work as a teacher, his example of life as a follower of St. Francis and his knowledge of the language, i.e. in the love of words and faith, which allowed him to write various Christian doctrines adapting the new evangelical message to the culture of the Nahuas. The content and the value representing the religious-philological context of the Evangelization is described in these doctrines., Código UNESCO / UNESCO Nomenclature: 550614.
