Surface modification of dental implants or orthopedic implants is important for biocompatibility, and Ti-6Al-4 V alloy is mainly used as implant material for clinical use. In particular, research on the formation of nanotubes for drug doping to improve biocompatibility is in progress. For the control of nanotube shape, in this study, nanotube shape changes on Ti-6Al-4 V alloy via various applied potential for bio-implants were researched using various instruments. The formation of nanotubes on the surface of the Ti-6Al-4 V alloy was performed using a DC power source as a two-electrode system, and platinum as a counter electrode and a working electrode as an anode. The electrolyte was 0.8 wt. % NaF solution and 1.0 M H3PO4 were used and mixed using a magnetic bar during anodization. At this time, the voltage applied when forming the nanotubes was varied as (10 → 20 → 30 V), (30 → 10 → 30 V), and (10 → 30 → 30 V), respectively, and these voltages were applied for 30 min for each step. After the formation of nanotubes, the surface morphology and structural properties of the samples were observed using field-emission scanning electron microscope, X-ray diffractometer, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and nanoindentation tester. The higher the voltage applied during the formation of nanotubes, the larger is the diameter. In the case of the nanotube (10 → 20 → 30 V), the top of the nanotube was narrow and the diameter increased toward the bottom, forming a cone shape. In the case of the nanotube (30 → 10 → 30 V), a narrow waist shape was formed, and in the case of the nanotube (10 → 30 → 30 V), a jar shape was formed with anatase and rutile phases. From the FT-IR results, when nanotubes are formed, TiO2 anatase was detected and showed the tendency to change from crystallization to amorphous state. The La 0.8- x Pr x Mg 0.2 Ni 3.8 (x = 0, 0.05, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3) alloy were synthesized useing the induction melting method. X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope, electron probe micro analyzer, and electrochemical tests were used to analyze the structure and electrochemical performance of the La 0.8- x Pr x Mg 0.2 Ni 3.8 (x = 0–0.3) alloy. It was studied how the Pr element affected the electrochemical characteristics and microstructure of the A 5 B 19 La-Mg-Ni based hydrogen storage alloy. The results show that the alloy consists of the CaCu 5 -LaNi 5 phase, 2 H-Pr 5 Co 19 phase, and 3R-Ce 5 Co 19 phase. The abundance of the A 5 B 19 phase increase with the increase of Pr content, while the abundance of the LaNi 5 phase decrease, and the addition of Pr promotes the formation of the 2 H-Pr 5 Co 19 phase. According to the results of the electrochemical test, every sample has good activation qualities, and the activation can be completed in 3–4 times. The activation properties are not significantly altered by the addition of Pr. The maximum discharge capacity increases at first, then decreases, reaching the highest 371.15 mAh g−1 at x = 0.2. The cyclic stability gradually improves with increasing content of Pr, and the maximum capacity retention rate reaches 85.80 % after 100 cycles. The primary factor influencing the alloy's high rate discharge ability is the exchange current density. The effects of La and Y on the microstructure and mechanical properties of cast Al-Si-Cu alloys were investigated by X-ray diffractometer (XRD), optical microscope (OM), and scanning electron microscope (SEM). The results indicated that the addition of La and Y had a great effect on the refinement of α-Al grains, the modification of eutectic Si phase, and the reduction of β-Al5FeSi length in Al-Si-Cu alloys. The A380 + 0.6 wt.% La/Y alloy exhibited the best microstructure and mechanical properties. The UTS and EI of the A380 + 0.6 wt.% La/Y alloy were 215.3 MPa and 5.1%, which were 22.9% and 37.8% higher than those of the matrix alloy, respectively. In addition, neither Al11La3 nor Al3Y generated by the addition of La and Y could not serve as the nucleation core of α-Al grains, so the grain refinement of α-Al originated from the growth limitation and constitutional supercooling. Since La and Y promote twinning generation and constitutional supercooling, the eutectic Si phase also changed from stripe-like to short fibrous or even granular and was significantly refined. High-cycle fatigue (HCF) is a critical property of metastable β Ti alloys in aerospace applications. In this work, the HCF behavior and corresponding microscale deformation mechanisms of a metastable Ti-5Al-5Mo-5V-1Cr-1Fe (Ti55511) alloy with a basket-weave structure were investigated. HCF and its deformation mechanisms of a Ti55511 alloy were systematically studied in the deformed condition by using a scanning electron microscope (SEM), a transmission electron microscope (TEM), and electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD). It was found that the Ti55511 alloy exhibited an excellent HCF strength (107 cycles, Kt = 1, R = 0.06) of 738 MPa. The fractographic investigation demonstrated that fatigue striations and secondary cracks were the main features in the crack initiation zone. Dislocation analyses indicated that the HCF deformation of the basket-weave microstructure was mainly affected by the dislocation slipping of the primary α (αp) phase. In addition, the dislocation pile-up at the αp/βtrans interface led to crack initiation. EBSD analyses indicated that the prismatic type slip system of the αp phase was preferentially activated during the HCF deformation process of the Ti55511 alloy, followed by the basal type and pyramid type systems. The microstructure, tensile property and corrosion behavior of the die-casting AlSi10Cu3 alloy with 0.6 wt% (La + Yb) addition and T6 heat treatment are discussed. The results of optical microscope (OM) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) demonstrate the main phases are refined after the alloy is treated by two modification methods, and the distribution of Al2Cu phases becomes uniform after T6 heat treatment, thus increasing the ultimate tensile strength (UTS), yield strength (YS) and elongation by 21.6%, 31.4% and 52.5%, respectively. Simultaneously, the corrosion current density (iccor) reaches the minimum value of 5.89 mA·cm-2, which is reduced by 81.1%. Meanwhile, the hydrogen evolution rate and weight loss rate also reach the minimum value of 25.5 × 10-3 ml cm-2 h-1 and 116.5 μg·cm-2 h-1, and comparing with unmodified alloy, they are reduced by 54.6% and 52.2%, respectively. The optimized corrosion behavior is attributed to the refinement of the various cathode phases in the alloy. Grain refinement of Al–Si alloys is one of the effective methods for improving the elongation (El) and ultimate tensile strength (UTS). The influences of alone adding Ni (0.5, 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0%) and complex adding Ni (0.5, 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0%) plus 0.4%Y on the evolution of α-Al, eutectic Si, as well as mechanical performance of Al–7Si alloy, were investigated. All specimens were characterized by electron probe microanalysis, transmission electron microscopy, optical microscope, and scanning electron microscope. The results indicated that the secondary dendrite arm spacing (SDAS) of primary α-Al was markedly decreased with increasing Ni content in Al–7Si alloy. When the Ni addition concentration increased to 1.5%, the developed dendritic α-Al were effectively refined into fine equiaxed dendrites. Rare earth Y (0.4%) plus Ni were together added to Al–7Si alloys. The results showed that complex addition of Ni plus Y had a more outstanding refinement effect of α-Al and eutectic Si than that of Ni alone addition in Al–7Si alloy. The coarse and needlelike eutectic Si was modified into fine fibrous shape, and the SDAS of α-Al was significantly reduced when 1.5%Ni plus 0.4%Y was simultaneously added to Al–7Si alloy. The structure and mechanical properties of non-equiatomic Al8Co30Cr18Fe9Ni31Nb4, Al8Co30Cr18Fe9Ni31Nb2Ti2 and Al8Co30Cr18Fe9Ni31Ti4 high entropy alloys (HEAs) were investigated using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), hardness and tensile testing. TEM and XRD analyses revealed the formation of γ''-Ni3Nb/γ (FCC), double FCC and γ'-Ni3Al/γ (FCC) structure for as-cast Al8Co30Cr18Fe9Ni31Nb4, Al8Co30Cr18Fe9Ni31Nb2Ti2 and Al8Co30Cr18Fe9Ni31Ti4 HEAs, respectively. The hardness and yield strength values were found to increase with the addition of Nb while the ductility of alloys increased with the increase in Ti concentration, significantly. The as-cast Al8Co30Cr18Fe9Ni31Ti4 alloy exhibited an excellent combination of ultimate tensile strength of 844 MPa and an elongation of 29.8% due to the coherent phase relation between γ' precipitates and γ matrix. The fractured surfaces of as-cast Al8Co30Cr18Fe9Ni31Nb4, Al8Co30Cr18Fe9Ni31Nb2Ti2 and Al8Co30Cr18Fe9Ni31Ti4 HEAs showed typical dimple type ductile fracture under tension test. Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to investigate the effect of remelting each layer on the homogeneity of nickel-titanium (NiTi) parts fabricated from elemental nickel and titanium powders using laser powder bed fusion (LPBF). In addition, the influence of manufacturing parameters and different melting strategies, including multiple cycles of remelting, on printability and macro defects, such as pore and crack formation, have been investigated. Design/methodology/approach: An LPBF process was used to manufacture NiTi alloy from elementally blended powders and was evaluated with the use of a remelting scanning strategy to improve the homogeneity of fabricated specimens. Furthermore, both single melt and up to two remeltings were used. Findings: The results indicate that remelting can be beneficial for density improvement as well as chemical and phase composition homogenization. Backscattered electron mode in scanning electron microscope showed a reduction in the presence of unmixed Ni and Ti elemental powders in response to increasing the number of remelts. The microhardness values of NiTi parts for the different numbers of melts studied were similar and ranged from 487 to 495 HV. Nevertheless, it was observed that measurement error decreases as the number of remelts increases, suggesting an increase in chemical and phase composition homogeneity. However, X-ray diffraction analysis revealed the presence of multiple phases regardless of the number of melt runs. In recent years, Mg alloys have attracted increased attention for biomedical application owing to their good biodegradability, biocompatibility, and biomechanical properties. However, rapid corrosion is still one of the most common limitations for their implanted application. In this work, the microstructure and corrosion behavior of the solution- and aging-treated Mg-xGd-1Zn-0.4Zr (x = 3, 6, and 9 wt%, denoted as GZ31K, GZ61K, and GZ91K, respectively) alloys were studied using optical microscope (OM), scanning electron microscope (SEM), immersion tests, electrochemical tests, and quasi in situ corrosion method. The results show that block Gd-rich precipitates and needle-like Zr-Zn-rich precipitates are formed as well as α-Mg matrix. With the increase in Gd content, the precipitates increase and the grain size first reduces and then increases. Corrosion experiment results show that the GZ61K alloy has the best corrosion resistance and the GZ91K alloy shows the highest corrosion rate among the three alloys in simulated body fluid (SBF). It is found that α-Mg is preferentially corroded and the precipitates have better corrosion resistance as compared to the α-Mg matrix. The GZ61K alloy with the corrosion rate of 0.23 mm/y in SBF shows a promising prospect for biomedical application. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The main objective of this investigation is to analyze the microstructure, tensile properties, and impact toughness of Ti6Al4V alloy joints developed using optimized parameters of linear friction welding (LFW) for gas turbine blisk assembly applications. The 6 mm thick plates of Ti6Al4V alloy were joined using a friction time of 40 sec, a friction pressure of 20 MPa, a forging pressure of 10 MPa, a forging time of 3 sec, and an oscillating frequency of 14 Hz. The different regions of joints were analyzed using a stereo zoom microscope. Optical and scanning electron microscope (SEM) was used for analysing the microstructural features of joints. The room temperature tensile properties, hardness, and impact toughness of LFW-Ti6Al4V alloy joints were evaluated and correlated to the microstructural features of weld region. The fractured sections of tensile and impact toughness specimens of joints were analyzed using SEM and the failure of joints was correlated with the hardness survey. Results showed that the LFW-Ti6Al4V alloy joints developed using the optimized parameters exhibited a tensile strength (TS) of 1015 MPa, a yield strength (YS) of 940 MPa, and an elongation (EL) of 8%. The joints revealed 98.54%, 95.91%, and 66.67% of tensile strength, yield strength, and ductility of the parent metal. The LFW joints disclosed impact toughness (IT) of 17.2 J which is 89.77% impact toughness of the parent metal. The superior tensile properties and impact toughness of LFW-Ti6Al4V alloy joints are mainly attributed to a greater degree of refinement of α + β grains in the weld interface, which offers greater resistance to tensile deformation and crack propagation. In the present work, the effect of thermal cycles on the physical and thermal properties of AZ31 alloy and AZ31/5wt%SiC and AZ31/10wt%SiC composites was investigated. Samples were prepared using the stir casting method and then subjected to precipitation hardening. Thermal cycles were done for as-cast and aged samples with V-shaped notch under 300, 600, and 900 heating and cooling cycles at 150 and 350 °C. The crack length (CL) was evaluated using optical microscope (OM), scanning electron microscope (SEM), and energy-dispersive scanning electron (EDS) analysis. Also, density, porosity, thermal expansion coefficient of the samples were evaluated. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis was employed to assess the phases present in the material. The results demonstrated that by increasing the number of thermal cycles up to 600 at 150 °C and 350 °C, the porosity and density of the as-cast and aged AZ31 alloy decreased and increased, respectively; however, the density and open porosity were remained constant for the composite samples. The crack's length enlarged with increasing the thermal cycles from 300 to 600 µm at 150 °C and 300 to 900 µm at 350 °C. It was found that the reinforcement and precipitates prevented the rapid growth of the crack in the magnesium matrix. The paper aimed to increase the corrosion‐resistant performance of AA7075 alloy by the incorporation of sol–gel with plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) technologies. The AA7075 alloy substrate was first coated by an oxide ceramic layer with the help of the PEO process and then covered by a sol–gel‐derived SiO2 layer. The results from an X‐ray diffraction and scanning electron microscope clearly show that a layer of sol–gel‐derived SiO2 uniformly covered and sealed the surface microporous structure of PEO coatings on AA7075 alloy, effectively enhancing the corrosion‐resistant performance of PEO‐coated AA7075 alloy in an aqueous solution containing 3.5‐wt.% NaCl. The lower current density of 2.09 × 10−7 A/cm2 and the larger polarization resistance of 5.35 × 104 Ω cm2 were found for sol–gel/PEO‐coated AA7075 alloy as compared with 3.68 × 10−6 A/cm2 and 9.81 × 103 Ω cm2 for individual PEO‐coated AA7075 alloy. In order to investigate the effect of Si content on the microstructures and properties of directionally solidified (DS) Fe-B alloy, a scanning electron microscope (SEM) with an energy dispersive spectrum (EDS), and X-ray diffraction have been employed to investigate the as-cast microstructures of DS Fe-B alloy. The results show that Si can strongly refine the columnar microstructures of the DS Fe-B alloy, and the columnar grain thickness of the oriented Fe2B is reduced with the increase of Si addition. In addition, Si is mainly distributed in the ferrite matrix, almost does not dissolve in boride, and seems to segregate in the center of the columnar ferrite to cause a strong solid solution strengthening and refinement effect on the matrix, thus raising the microhardness of the matrix and bulk hardness of the DS Fe-B alloy. This study investigated the microstructure, hardness, tensile and tribological behaviour of a cooling slope Al--Si--Mg alloy following ECAP and T6 heat treatment. The optical and scanning electron microscopes were applied to investigate the microstructure of the as-cast material and heattreated ECAPed Al--Si--Mg alloy. The dry sliding wear test was tested with three different loads of 10 N, 50 N, and 100 N with constant sliding speed and sliding distance at 1.0 m/s and 9000 m, respectively, using the pin-on-disc tribometer. The hardness and tensile properties were evaluated through microhardness, UTS, and YS measurement for the as-cast Al--Si--Mg alloy, both heat-treated with and without ECAPed alloys. Moreover, wear rate and COF in the Al--Si--Mg alloy with different loads were analysed and linked with microstructural and strength behaviour after the ECAP process. Meanwhile, these analyses of results were correlated with the behaviour of the as-cast Al--Si--Mg aluminium alloy and heat-treated non-ECAPed alloy. Results demonstrated that a combination of ECAP processing and T6 heat treatment improves the mechanical behaviour, while the COF and wear rate are improved at a load of 100 N. In this work a new nanoscale surface marking technique, namely electron beam damage induced surface marking (EBDISM), is developed and tested for the first time on a fine-grained pure Mg surface. This technique utilizes focused high-energy electron beam of a scanning electron microscope to "burn" dense arrays of nano-scale grid patterns on the sample surface, and it is proved to be very effective for identifying and measuring localised deformation behaviours. However, the surface marking deposited by EBDISM is not permanent and it tends to deteriorate overtime. In the process of directional solidification, the degree of element segregation can be changed by altering the drawing rate to affect the phase transformation behavior of the alloy. In this paper, four kinds of MnNi alloy specimens were prepared by directional solidification at different drawing rates. The phase transformation behavior of the alloy was studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermal expansion analysis and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA). The microstructure of the alloy was observed by metallographic microscope, scanning electron microscope and transmission electron microscope. The results show that the microstructure of directionally solidified MnNi alloy has the characteristics of polymorphy. There are multi-scale twins from micron to nanometer in the alloy, and their coordinated movement makes the internal friction of twins 3-6 times than that of rolled alloy. It is found that during heating, the alloy undergoes fct1→fcc phase transformation in the interdendritic spacings of Mn-poor region while fct2→fco→fcc multi-stage phase transformation occurs in Mn-rich dendrite. This multiply phase transformation behavior makes the damping capacity of directionally solidified MnNi alloy 2-6 times than that of rolled MnNi alloy in a wide temperature range. FeCrMnNi high-entropy alloys prepared by vacuum induction melting were tested and characterized using an X-ray diffractometer, a scanning electron microscope, a micro hardness tester and a universal tensile tester to investigate the effects of the heat treatment temperature on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the alloys and the heat-resistant corrosion properties of FeCrMnNi alloy after annealing at 800 °C. It is a high-entropy alloy with a typical dendritic (DR) morphology. With the increase in the heat-treatment temperature, the amount of ultrafine precipitates with the BCC structure in the matrix increased; furthermore, the amount of ultrafine precipitates started to decrease at temperatures above 900 °C, and the DR structure gradually weakened. After heat treatment at temperatures above 800 °C, the alloy showed a tensile strength of 721.1 MPa and an elongation at break of 26.7%, which indicates improved strength of the alloy while maintaining good plasticity, mainly because a large amount of nanoscale particles precipitated between the DR structures and enabled fine grain strengthening. The present work investigates the effect of process parameters (normal load, sliding velocity, and sliding distance) on wear behaviour of Ti-3Al-2.5 V alloy under dry sliding condition. The wear tests are designed using central composite design (CCD) and are carried out using pin on disc tribometer. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) is used to analyse the worn out surfaces of the Ti-3Al-2.5 V alloy specimens. SEM micrograph of worn samples indicates that at low normal load condition, cracks and smooth wear occur during sliding, whereas some deep grooves and delamination occurred at high normal load condition. The main mechanism responsible for wear of titanium alloy is ploughing, oxidative wear and metallic delamination. The effect of process parameters on wear loss was studied using response surface methodology (RSM) – based mathematical models. Using analysis of variance (ANOVA), an optimal combination of process parameters that minimise the wear loss is determined. The results indicated that among all three factors, normal load is the most significant factor that influences the dry sliding wear behaviour of the alloy. Bacterial infection and stress shielding are important issues in orthopedic implants. In this study, Ag element was selected as an antibacterial agent to develop an antibacterial Ti-40Nb-10Ag alloy by spark plasma sintering (SPS). The microstructure, phase constitution, mechanical properties, microhardness, and antibacterial properties of the Ti-40Nb-10Ag sintered alloys with different sintering temperatures were systematically studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), microhardness tests, compressive tests, and antibacterial tests. The Ti-40Nb-10Ag alloys were mainly composed of α-Ti, β-Ti, and Ti2Ag intermetallic phases. This study shows that the change in sintering temperature affects the microstructure of the alloy, which results in changes in its microhardness, compressive strength, elastic modulus, and antibacterial properties. At the sintering temperature of 975 °C, good metallurgical bonding was developed on the surface of the alloy, which led to excellent microhardness, compressive strength, elastic modulus, and antibacterial ability with an antibacterial rate of 95.6%. A new type of composite layer material system, Al4Ni/Al2CrCuFeNi2Ti high-entropy alloy, was designed. The Al4Ni transition layer was prepared on the surface of an AZ91D magnesium alloy by laser cladding, which solves the problem of excessive melting point difference between the magnesium alloy and the high-entropy alloy. The Al4Ni/Al2CrCuFeNi2Ti high-entropy alloy composite layer with good surface formation was successfully prepared on the AZ91D magnesium matrix. Optical microscope, scanning electron microscope, and x-ray diffraction were used to characterize the microstructure and properties of the composite layer. It showed that the high-entropy alloy layer was mainly composed of simple BCC and FCC solid solution phases. The Al2CrCuFeNi2Ti high-entropy alloy layer, the Al4Ni layer, and the AZ91D magnesium matrix have excellent metallurgical bonds. The hardness of the high-entropy alloy layer was about 12 times that of the AZ91D magnesium alloy. The corrosion resistance of the high-entropy alloy layer in 3.5 wt. % NaCl was also improved. As promising substitutes for Cu-Be alloys, Cu-Ni-Si series alloys have been investigated intensively concerning their mechanical and electrical properties but without much attention on their corrosion performance. Herein corrosion behaviors and mechanisms of the supersaturated and peak-aged CuNiSiCr alloys are investigated using salt spray test, x-ray diffraction, scanning and transmission electron microscopes. The corrosion rate of the aged sample is lower than that of the supersaturated one due to forming a denser protective corrosion product, Cu2O. Theoretical analyses indicate that the Cu2O film grows by oxidization of the matrix and its granular size is greatly influenced by the precipitates. The second corrosion product Cu2(OH)3Cl/CuCl2·3Cu(OH)2 forms by consuming the oxide Cu2O, which will induce pitting and deteriorate the corrosion resistance. A novel aluminum matrix composites (AMCs) reinforced by multiphase intermetallic compounds were fabricated through a conventional casting approach. The microstructure, compression properties and tribological behavior of the AMCs were detailed studied by the scanning electron microscope (SEM), x-ray diffraction (XRD), and electron probe microanalysis (EPMA). The results demonstrated that the fraction of precipitated multiphase intermetallic compounds gradually increased with the increase of high-entropy alloy (HEA) adding content, and the grain size of α-Al obviously was reduced. The irregular multiphase intermetallic compounds, such as Al70Cr20Ni10 and AlTiCrSi, are distributed in the Al matrix. However, the Al2Cu and Al7Cu4Ni distributed in inter-dendrites of α-Al. In addition, the compression strength of AMCs reinforced by 20.0 wt.% HEA addition was significantly enhanced to 530 MPa due to the precipitation of multiphase intermetallic compounds. Meanwhile, its compression strain was higher than 25%. Compared with pure Al, the microhardness of AMCs was extremely increased to 160 HV when the addition content of HEA was up to 20.0 wt.%. When the addition amount of HEA reached 10.0 wt.%, the COF of the ACMs was decreased by 51.6% from 0.766 to 0.371. When the HEA content was up to 20.0 wt.%, the wear rate reached the minimum of 4.87 × 10−5 mm3/N·m, which was reduced by 31.9% compared with pure Al. Calcium phosphate chemical conversion coatings with the additions of sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) and dodecanesulfonic acid sodium (DSS), respectively, were prepared on the surface of the Mg-8Li alloy. The surface and cross-sectional corrosion morphologies, compositions, and corrosion behavior of the coated surfaces in 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution were respectively investigated by using a scanning electron microscope (SEM), energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS), electrochemical workstation, hydrogen evolution apparatus, and optical microscope (OM). The results demonstrated that Ca-P coatings had a petal-like structure being composed of leaf-like particles. After being respectively performed for 30 min in conversion solutions containing SLS and DSS, the corresponding average film thicknesses of surface coatings were 27 μm and 7 μm. In addition, the corrosion current densities of coated surfaces by using the conversion solutions containing SLS and DSS were 1.438 × 10−5 A·cm−2 and 4.719 × 10−5 A·cm−2, respectively. A complex concentrated noble alloy (CCNA) of equiatomic composition (Ag20Pd20Pt20Cu20Ni20–20 at. %) was studied as a potential high—performance material. The equiatomic composition was used so that this alloy could be classified in the subgroup of high—entropy alloys (HEA). The alloy was prepared by induction melting at atmospheric pressure, using high purity elements. The degree of metastability of the cast state was estimated on the basis of changes in the microstructure during annealing at high temperatures in a protective atmosphere of argon. Characterisation of the metallographically prepared samples was performed using a scanning electron microscope (SEM) equipped with an energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and X–ray diffraction (XRD). Observation shows that the microstructure of the CCNA is in a very metastable state and multiphase, consisting of a continuous base of dendritic solidification—a matrix with an interdendritic region without other microstructural components and complex spheres. A model of the probable flow of metastable solidification of the studied alloy was proposed, based on the separation of L—melts into L1 (rich in Ni) and L2 (rich in Ag). The phase structure and microstructure of Sm12Co88−xCux (x = 0, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10; at.%) as-cast alloys and melt-spun ribbons prepared via the arc-melting method and melt-spun technology were studied experimentally by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) with energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). The results reveal that the Sm12Co88−xCux (x = 0) as-cast alloy contains Sm2Co17 and Sm5Co19 phases, while the Sm12Co88−xCux (x = 2) as-cast alloy is composed of Sm2Co17, Sm2Co7 and Sm(Co, Cu)5 phases. Sm2Co17 and Sm(Co, Cu)5 phases are detected in Sm12Co88−xCux (x = 4, 6, 8, 10) as-cast alloys. Meanwhile, Sm12Co88−xCux ribbons show a single SmCo7 phase, which is still formed in the ribbons annealed at 1023 K for one hour. After annealed at 1123 K for two hours, cooled slowly down to 673 K at 0.5 K/min and then kept for four hours, the ribbons are composed of Sm2Co17 and Sm(Co, Cu)5 phases. The magnetic measurements of Sm12Co88−xCux ribbons were performed by vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). The results exhibit that the maximum magnetic energy product ((BH)max), the coercivity (Hcj) and the remanence (Br) of the Sm12Co88−xCux ribbons increase generally with the increase in Cu substitution. In particular, the magnetic properties of the ribbons annealed at 1123 K and 673 K increase significantly with the increase in Cu substitution, resulting from the increase in the volume fraction of the formed Sm(Co, Cu)5 phase after heat treatment. In general, Ti-6Al-4V alloys have been applied in recent metal cutting processes as an advantage of their immense strength concerning weight ratio at more corrosion resistance and temperature characteristics. It induces wide application in the automotive, nuclear, aerospace, biomedical, chemical, and naval industries. This recent research aims to establish the correlation between main input variables (cutting speed, axial feed rate, and depth of cut) and output characteristics (surface roughness, tool flank wear, and amplitude of vibration signal) in dry (no coolant) machining of Ti-6Al-4V alloy. The trials were conducted at variations of cutting speeds (75, 125, and 175 m/min), depth of cut (0.2, 0.4, 0.6 mm), and axial feed rate (0.1, 0.15, 0.2 mm/rev). The tool wear mechanisms were analyzed through scanning electron microscope. Also, the integrated multiple-output factors optimization method using a combined quality loss concept in the weighted principal component analysis coupled with the Taguchi analysis has been executed. With this, the optimal parameter setting has been found to be depth of cut (0.4 mm)–feed rate (0.1 mm/rev)–cutting speed (75 m/min). Device-related infection or inflammatory and stress shield are still the main problems faced by titanium alloy implants for long-term implantation application; therefore, it is of great significance to design an alloy with low elastic modulus and good antibacterial properties as well as good biocompatibility. In this paper, Ti-13Nb-13Zr-xCu(x = 3, 7 wt.%) alloys were designed and prepared to reveal the influence of Cu content on the elastic modulus and antibacterial property. X-ray diffractometer, metallographic microscope, scanning electron microscope, and transmission electron microscope were used to study the phase transformation, microstructure, mechanical properties, antibacterial properties, and cytotoxicity of the alloys. The experimental results have demonstrated that the antibacterial performance and the elastic modulus were significantly improved but the corrosion resistance deteriorated with the increase of the copper content. Ti-13Nb-13Zr-3Cu with a low modulus of 73 GPa and an antibacterial rate of over 90% against Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) exhibited great potential as a candidate for implant titanium in the future. The topologically close-packed (TCP) μ phase is usually known as an undesirable precipitation in highly alloyed Ni-base superalloys and steels. However, the ultrastrong μ phase with micron/nano-scale distribution plays a key role in driving the emergence of self-sharpening in our recently developed WMoFeNi high-entropy alloy (HEA). Herein, a detailed study is carried out to understand the substructure and atomic occupation of the μphase by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and aberration-corrected transmission electron microscope (ACTEM). The Fe/Ni and W/Mo element pairs are equivalent in the μ phase structure. Moreover, the elements in μ phase exhibit a near-equiatomic ratio, and the μ phase can grow during annealing at 1150 °C. Aluminium alloys have low density and good mechanical properties, making them suitable for the manufacture of mechanical structures where low weight is critical. However, when these alloys are subjected to elevated temperatures, their mechanical properties deteriorate significantly. The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of temperature on the mechanical properties of aluminium alloy, EN AC-Al Si12CuNiMg. For this purpose, an experimental investigation was performed at ambient and elevated temperatures on aluminium alloy samples prepared by casting. Tensile and hardness tests were carried out to characterize the mechanical properties of this material. Additionally, an optical microscope was used to examine the microstructures of this alloy. Finally, a scanning electron microscope was used to analyze the fracture modes of this material. The results show that the mechanical properties such as tensile strength, yield strength, and Young's modulus of this alloy dramatically decrease when the temperature exceeds 250oC. The microstructural investigation reveals several factors that are detrimental to the mechanical properties of this alloy. This includes coarse-grained structures, micro-pores, and several intermetallic compounds. Furthermore, fractography reveals a minor cleavage-like pattern and micro-cracks on the fracture surface of all failed samples under various temperatures, indicating semi-brittle fracture mode. This work aimed to investigate the effects of some Bi additions (x = 0, 1, 3, and 5 wt%) added to Sn–2Cu solder alloy on its thermal properties, mechanical performance, and resistance to corrosion, which was investigated by using the Differential scanning calorimetry, Scanning electron microscope, Vickers Hardness Tester, Universal testing machine, Electrochemical workstation, and X-ray diffraction. The experimental results showed that doping 5 wt% Bi could reduce the melting point from 239.7 to 226.6 °C and the undercooling from 24.0 to 9.0 °C, which could improve the thermal properties. Moreover, the Bi addition could refine the microstructure and decrease the Cu6Sn5 IMC phases' size. With the addition of 5 wt% Bi, the microhardness and tensile strength reached the highest value of 20.13 HV and 57.64 MPa, respectively, due to the solid solution strengthening and precipitation strengthening. The electrochemical corrosion behaviors were performed to use the potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The obtained results revealed that a dense passivation film was formed on the surface of Sn–2Cu–1Bi alloy to prevent the alloy from being further corroded, which had the lowest value of corrosion current density (0.034 μA·cm−2) and biggest value of total resistance (200.4 kΩ·cm2). The effects of Ag content and hot-rolling on the microstructure and mechanical properties of Zn-1.5Cu-xAg-0.1Zr(x = 0, 0.1, 0.5, 1.0) alloys were investigated. The microstructure, phase composition and fracture morphology of the alloys were observed and analyzed by optical microscope, x-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope, energy dispersive spectrometer and universal mechanical testing machine. The results show that Ag has the effect of grain refinement. After alloying, the grain size of as-cast Zn-1.5Cu-xAg-0.1Zr alloy decreased first and then increased, and the minimum grain size of as-cast Zn-1.5Cu-0.5Ag-0.1Zr alloy was refined to 64.18 μm. At the same time, new phase AgZn3 began to precipitate, the yield strength (YS), ultimate tensile strength (UTS), and elongation (EL) of alloys were also up to 97.35 MPa, 139.25 MPa and 7.60%, respectively. After hot-rolling, the grain of Zn-1.5Cu-xAg-0.1Zr alloy was broken and new phase CuZn5 was precipitated. High-entropy alloys are a new generation of materials that have attracted the interest of numerous scientists because of their unusual properties. It seems interesting to use these alloys in biomedical applications. However, for this purpose, the basic condition of corrosion resistance must be fulfilled. In this article, selected corrosion properties of self-composed high-entropy alloys are investigated and compared with conventional biomedical alloys, that is titanium alloys and stainless steels. Corrosive parameters were determined using the potentiodynamic method. X-ray diffraction studies were performed to characterize the crystal structures. Microstructures of the prepared materials were examined using a scanning electron microscope, and surface hardness was measured by the Vickers method. The results show that investigated high-entropy alloys are characterized by simple structures. Three out of four tested high-entropy alloys had better corrosion properties than conventional implant alloys used in medicine. The Al0.7CoCrFeNi alloy was characterized by a corrosion potential of −224 mV and a corrosion current density of 0.9 μA/cm2; CoCrFeNiCu by −210 mV and 1.1 μA/cm2; TiAlFeCoNi by −435 mV and 4.6 μA/cm2; and Mn0.5TiCuAlCr by −253 mV and 1.3 μA/cm2, respectively. Therefore, the proposed high-entropy alloys can be considered as potential materials for biomedical applications, but this requires more studies to confirm their biocompatibility. Aluminium alloys reinforced by nanoparticles are widely utilized in space vehicles, automotive components and industrial applications due to the unique characteristic of high stiffness to weight ratio. In this research, aluminium alloy 8011-TiC (Titanium Carbide) composites with a various weight percentage of reinforcement such as 5%, 7% and 9% wt.% were produced through stir casting technique. The contribution and uniform dispersion of TiC nano particles in Al 8011 was investigated through microstructural examination, mechanical and tribological behaviour. To sew up the uniform distribution of reinforcement particles over composite metal matrix alloy was investigated using Scanning and Optical Electron Microscope (OEM & SEM) depiction. The pattern of TiC content in the Al8011 alloy was observed through X-ray diffraction technique. Also, specimens are exposed to wear test as per ASTM G99 standard and the weight loss method is adopted. The result exhibits that tensile, yield strength properties and microhardness of nanocomposites particles to about increases by 35%, 170% and 150% respectively. The resistance of the Al0.5Cr0.9FeNi2.5V0.2 high-entropy alloy (HEA) to hydrogen embrittlement (HE) was investigated by a slow strain rate test (SSRT), and the fracture surface was examined through a scanning electron microscope. Compared with other high-strength steels, Al0.5Cr0.9FeNi2.5V0.2 showed insignificant strength loss after hydrogen charging. The fracture surface of the hydrogen-charged specimens mainly consisted of dimples, and no intergranular morphology was observed. The coupling effect of the dispersed nano-structured precipitates and high-density dislocations in Al0.5Cr0.9FeNi2.5V0.2 improves the resistance to hydrogen-induced strength loss. Recent investigations have highlighted the multi-resolution and high throughput characteristics of the spherical indentation experimental and analysis protocols. In the present work, we further demonstrate the capabilities of these protocols for reliably extracting indentation stress-strain (ISS) responses from the microscale constituents as well as the bulk scale of dual phase materials exhibiting bimodal microstructures. Specifically, we focus on bimodal microstructures produced in an α–β Ti6242 sample. Combining the multi-resolution indentation responses with microstructural statistics gathered from the segmentation of back-scattered electron images from the scanning electron microscope allowed for a critical experimental evaluation of the commonly utilized Rule of Mixtures based composite model for the elastic stiffness and plastic yield strength of the sample. The indentation and image analyses protocols described in this paper offer novel research avenues for the systematic development and critical experimental validation of composite material models. Nimonic alloy 75, a high strength temperature resistant material, has widespread applications in gas turbine engines, industrial furnaces, nuclear engineering, etc. This paper presents a comparative study of capabilities evaluation between the conventional electrical discharge machining (EDM) and ultrasonic-assisted-electrical discharge machining (UAEDM) of Nimonic alloy 75 work material. During experimentation, input parameters namely tool material; discharge current; servo voltage and pulse on duration were varied to find their effects on material removal rate (MRR) and surface roughness (SR). Results indicated that UAEDM process leads to an increase of 53.57% in MRR over conventional EDM process, whereas SR of UAEDM process is 18.47% higher compared to conventional EDM process. Scanning electron microscope 'SEM' images shows that UAEDM process has fewer surface irregularities compared to conventional EDM process. Energy-dispersive x-ray (EDS) test has shown tool material migration and carbon enrichment of EDMed and UAEDMed surfaces. X-ray diffraction 'XRD' analysis has shown the formation of NiC phase on EDMed and UAEDMed surface when compared to unmachined surface. Further, a significant reduction in crystallite size was observed for EDMed and UAEDMed surface in comparison to unmachined surface. The development of magnesium alloys with superior plasticity and favorable strength is still challenging in aerospace industry. Herein, hot extruded Mg-xNd-2.0Sm-0.4Zn-0.4Zr alloys (x = 0, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0 and 2.5 wt.%) were rationally designed and easily prepared in order to implement the favorable combination of strength and plasticity. The effects of Nd element addition on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the hot extruded alloys were systematically investigated by optical microscopy (OM), scanning electron microscope (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The OM results indicated that the grain size of the hot extruded alloys decreased from 27.1 to 14.1 μm with increasing Nd addition from 0 to 2.5 wt.%. Some coarse β phases existed at the grain boundary when the addition of Nd element increased to 2.0 wt.%. The TEM results showed that the nanoscaled basal lamellar precipitates, granular precipitates and prismatic lamellar precipitates formed in α-Mg matrix. And the amount of precipitated phase increased obviously with the increase of Nd element addition. The ultimate tensile strength increased significantly from 203 ± 3.0 to 237 ± 2.5 MPa, and the elongation decreased from 30.5 to 21.2 % when the Nd elements increased from 0 to 2.5 wt.%. Main aim of this study is to examine change of microstructural and the mechanical properties of Al-7075 alloy depending on B content added with different proportions. Rapid solidification process used to produce the alloys was carried out with a single roll melt spinner via a wheel with a rotational speed of 25 m/s. For the microstructural characterization of the alloys, a scanning electron microscope and X-ray diffraction analyzes were used. According to obtained results, it can be said that B addition led to modification of dimensions and shapes of both α−Al and intermetallic phases occurred, it reduced average grain size from 0.45 μm to 0.34 μm in the microstructure. The B addition also led to dramatically increase in microhardness of the Al-7075 alloy. The microhardness of the alloy with 0.4 wt. % B is 0.19 GPa, this is clearly one times higher than that of the alloy without B addition. With the development and wide application of nickel-based single-crystal superalloys, the effect of Ru on the microstructure stability and high-temperature properties of superalloys is becoming increasingly important. In this study, the effect of Ru on the evolution of the γ′ phase in Ni-Al-Ru ternary alloys during aging treatment was analyzed, using a scanning electron microscope and transmission electron microscope, combined with energy-dispersive spectroscopy. The relationship between chemical partition behavior and γ/γ′ lattice misfit was investigated in detail. During the aging process, Ru addition suppressed the growth rate and rafting process of γ′ precipitates, while the effect of Ru on hindering γ′ phase growth was reduced when the Ru content was over 3 at%. Ru preferentially partitioned to the γ phase, and its partitioning ratio to the γ phase increased with a variation in Ru content from 1 at% to 3 at% and decreased for the NiAl6Ru alloy. Additionally, the lattice misfit of all alloys was positive and reduced with the increase in Ru content, which hindered the Ru atoms to diffuse into the γ phase and promoted the shape of γ′ precipitates to change from cubic to spherical. Utilizing element substitution to enhance the hydrogen storage capabilities of Mg-based alloys represents a promising approach in the quest for efficient energy storage solutions. Thereby, in this paper, Ni is chosen to substitute a portion of Mg in a Ce–Mg-based alloy aimed at improving its hydriding and dehydriding performance. Mg 77+ x Ni 20- x Ce 3 (x = 0, 5, 10, 15) alloys are successfully prepared by the vacuum induction melting method. The structural characterizations of the alloys are performed using X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscope. The alloys are composed of a primary phase of Mg 2 Ni, lamella eutectic composites of Mg + Mg 2 Ni, and some amount of CeMg 12 and Ce 2 Mg 17. In the as-cast Mg 87 Ni 10 Ce 3 alloy, the Mg 2 Ni phase disappears, transforming into a typical eutectic structure of hundreds of nanometers thick Mg–Mg 2 Ni lamellas. This structure significantly enhances the hydrogen storage kinetics, with a hydrogen absorption capacity of 5.66 wt% at 653 K and a desorption capacity of 5.45 wt% over 2 h at 683 K, outperforming other alloys. Moreover, its peak hydrogen release temperature is significantly lower than that of the Mg 92 Ni 5 Ce 3 alloy. The formation of the CeH 2.29 phase within the alloy acts as a catalyst, effectively improving the exothermic and endothermic kinetics of hydrogen absorption and desorption, resulting in a much lower hydrogen desorption activation energy compared to MgH 2. However, the variation in the activation energy of the alloy remains limited, ranging between 66.6 ∼71.1 kJ/mol. The presence of an adsorbed film from PA was confirmed by SEM studies of the electrode exterior side. This study was conducted with a high level of thoroughness. X-ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), and Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM) were used to analyze the phase composition and microstructure of the AM-2024Al and the RO-2024Al. The hardness and porosity of the AM-2024Al, as well as the bonding strength between AM-2024Al and RO-2024Al, were also investigated. Furthermore, the corrosion and tribocorrosion properties and failure mechanisms of the AM-2024Al and the RO-2024Al were systematically and thoroughly compared and analyzed. The results of this comprehensive study revealed that the AM-2024Al displayed a similar phase structure and higher hardness in comparison to the RO-2024Al, and the AM-2024Al was compact and tightly bound to the RO-2024Al with a bonding strength of over 55.5 MPa. Furthermore, the AM-2024Al exhibited better corrosion resistance under PDP (potentiodynamic polarization) corrosion and similar wet sliding wear resistance under an approximate pure friction process (OCP corrosion, namely open circuit potential corrosion) and tribocorrosion compared with the RO-2024Al. These findings provide a high level of confidence in the potential of cold spraying additive manufacture 2024Al as a reliable way to repair damaged RO-2024Al. The microstructure, phase composition, precipitates evaluation, casting, and mechanical properties of the novel cast Al-4Cu-2.1Er-1Mg-0.2Zr-0.2Cr-0.15Fe-0.15Si-0.1Ti alloy were analyzed using by optical microscope, scanning and transmission electron microscopes, differential scanning calorimetry, thermodynamic calculations, hot cracking and mechanical properties measurements. The positive effect of Cr as a substitution of Mn on plasticity and precipitation strengthening was demonstrated. The 0.2Zr, 0.2Cr and 0.1 Ti as a grain refiners provide a fine grain size of 25 μm in the as-cast state due to primary Al 75–80 Cu 10–12 Er 3–4 Cr 7 phase particles formation as a nucleation centers of Al. The hot cracking index (HCI) of the AlCuErMgCr alloy was 12–14 mm which is similar with HCI of the cast Al-Si-Cu-Mg alloys. The good casting properties in the AlCuErMgCr alloy achieved due to a fine grain structure and narrow solidification range. The contribution of the Al 3 (Zr,Er) (40 nm), Al 45 Cr 7 (6 nm), and S'(θ') (100/5 nm) precipitates is 38.5 MPa, 140.4 MPa, and 198.9 MPa and the calculated contribution from dislocation and precipitates is 262.3 MPa. The ultimate tensile strength (UTS) and elongation (El.) of the AlCuErMgCr alloy are 372 MPa and 6% which is higher in 16.6% and 150%, respectively, than in the Mn-containing alloy. Novel alloy has an excellent combination of yield strength (YS) and plasticity at 20–250°C. The YS and El. are 301 MPa and 6% and 225–250 MPa and 4.6–11.5% at 20 and 200–250°C, respectively. The rupture strength at 250°C after 100 h (σ 100 250) is 106 MPa. The microstructure and properties of the aged Cu-Cr-Zr-Nb alloy were studied by means of hardness tester, universal tensile testing machine, conductivity meter, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope, and transmission electron microscope. The results indicated that the hardness and TS (tensile strength) of the Cu-Cr-Zr-Nb alloy increased first and subsequently decreased with increasing the aging temperature. Nevertheless, the electrical conductivity is gradually increasing. The aged Cu-Cr-Zr-Nb alloy was mostly made up of Cu matrix, Cr particles, Cr 2 Nb, and CuZr compounds. Due to the effects of dislocations accumulated by cold drawing and twins produced during the aging process, the softening temperature of the alloy reached 590 ℃. When the Cu-Cr-Zr-Nb alloy was aged at 490 ℃, < 111 > replaced < 110 > in the optimal orientation of the alloy, and the KAM (kernel average misorientation) value inside the alloy was the largest. The alloy exhibited great comprehensive properties at 490 ℃ for 1 h, with a hardness of 144.4 HBW, a TS of 521 MPa, and an electrical conductivity of 78.3%IACS. The contribution value of YS (yield strength) at different aging temperatures was further calculated. • Experimental investigation of wetting behaviour in Cu-In alloy is carried out. • Studies based on scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectroscopy are carried out to identify wetting behaviour. • Indium seems to considerably affect the wetting transition at triple grain junction. This work investigates Cu-In alloy at 15% indium for wetting behaviour after heat treatment at 800 ⁰C. The system is observed to show wetting behaviour at triple junction (grain junction) through Scanning electron microscope imaging. It is observed in energy dispersive spectroscopy that after annealing, increased segregation of indium near triple junction is responsible for this wetting behaviour. Zn alloy has attracted much attention as a biodegradable material for biomedical applications. However, due to the significant strain softening of Zn alloys, how to break the bottleneck of synergistic yield strength and uniform elongation is an urgent problem to be solved. In this work, a Zn-2.3Cu-0.8Mn (wt.%) alloy was fabricated via low-temperature extrusion and annealing at 330 °C for 1 h to attain dual heterostructures with bimodal grains and multi-scale second phases, focusing on the effect of heterostructure on the mechanical properties. Uniaxial tensile test and loading-unloading-reloading test were applied to reveal the mechanical properties of the Zn-2.3Cu-0.8Mn alloy, while scanning electron microscope, electron backscatter diffraction, and transmission electron microscope were used to characterize its microstructure. Compared with the as-extruded alloy with uniform and fine grains, 330–1 alloy achieves a better combination of strength and uniform elongation (yield strength: 287.8 ± 8.5 MPa, ultimate tensile strength: 321.4 ± 6.8 MPa, and uniform elongation: 14.2 ± 1.8%). The high strength was primarily attributed to the coordination of grain boundary strengthening, hetero-deformation induced strengthening, Orowan strengthening, and dislocation strengthening. Besides, the coarse grains, twinning, as well as the suppression of grain boundary sliding and phase boundary sliding promoted dislocation proliferation and storage capacity, thereby improving work hardening capacity. The large strain hardening capacity was responsible for excellent plasticity. • Bi 2 Te 3 doped with Se, Sb and Na with various amounts were synthesized by simple melting. • Transport properties have been studied over the temperature range 283–473 K. • Se-doped Bi 2 Te 3 showed interestingly high ZT values at high temperatures. • The maximum ZT was recorded at 1.97 for the highest Sb-doped Bi 1.94 Sb 0.06 Te 3 at 430 K. Bulk alloys of Bi 2 Te 3 doped with various amounts of Se, Sb and Na were synthesized by simple melting. Structural and morphological properties have been checked using x-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) observations. XRD and SEM investigations revealed that the obtained samples are of high crystallinity with the structural characteristics of the Bi 2 Te 3 phase. Electrical and thermoelectric properties of the prepared samples were investigated over the temperature range 283–473 K. Seebeck coefficient and electrical and thermal conductivities were measured and studied as functions of temperature between 283 K and 473 K. The power factor (PF) was calculated and examined against the temperature increasing, as well. The thermoelectric figure of merit (ZT) was estimated from the materials power factor and thermal conductivity. The Sb-doped alloy exhibited the largest power factor, recorded at 285.23 µW/m.K2 at 430 K. On the other side, the Sb-doped and the Na-doped Bi 2 Te 3 showed increased ZT than that of the pristine alloy. The maximum ZT was recorded at 1.97 for the highest Sb-doped Bi 1.94 Sb 0.06 Te 3 sample, observed at 430 K. It is believed that the increased number of grain boundaries besides the decreased grain size are main reasons behind the high observed ZT in this work, especially because the phonon scattering on grain boundaries results in reducing the lattice part of the thermal conductivity. Purpose: This study aims to improve the tribological performance of Babbitt alloy under oil lubricant condition. Thus, the surface was treated into oleophobic state by modifying with low surface energy fluorosilane (1H,1H,2H,2H-perfluorodecyltriethoxysilane). It is believed that the oleophobic surface offered excellent wear resistance of Babbitt-based tribo-pairs. Design/methodology/approach: By modifying the Babbitt alloy with low surface energy fluorosilane and measuring the oil contact angle, the wetting behavior was evaluated. Using Pin on Disk tribometer, the tribological properties of bare Babbitt and modified Babbitt were quantified. The samples after the friction test were characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and the anti-wear performance was evaluated under dry and oil lubrication conditions. Findings: Results showed that oil contact angle of modified Babbitt was109° which was tripled compared to that of prime surface, which indicates the oleophobic behavior was greatly improved. Under dry conditions, the friction coefficient of the modified surface with different load conditions is slightly lower than that of the bare surface, while the friction coefficient of the modified surface under lubrication conditions is significantly decreased compared to that of the bare surface. Interestingly, under low load and high load, the wear rate of the modified Babbitt alloy surface is only 1/4 and 1/3 of that of the bare surface, respectively. Originality/value: The work proposed an effective method to improve the Babbitt tribological performances and will lighten future ideas for the Babbitt alloy bearing with high wear resistance, which is beneficial to improve the service life of sliding bearings and has huge promotion and application value in the manufacture of sliding bearings. The corrosion behavior and microstructure of Mg-3Zn-1Mn-xSr (x = 0, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0 wt.%) alloys are investigated by optical microscope (OM), scanning electron microscope (SEM), electrochemical tests and immersion experiments equipped with a dynamic corrosion device. The introduction of Sr element changes the distribution of Mg7Zn3 phase in the Mg-3Zn-1Mn alloy, promoting its precipitation at the grain boundary. Decrease in grain size and second phase spacing can be observed with the increase of Sr content, and the size of semi-continuous second phases (Mg7Zn3 + Mg17Sr2) distributed along grain boundary increases. The corrosion resistance of Mg-3Zn-1Mn-xSr alloys increases with the suitable addition of Sr, but decreases with the addition of excessive Sr, indicating that the critical value exists for the addition of Sr to obtain the optimal corrosion resistance. Optimal corrosion performance (CR = 1.213 ± 0.02mm/y, Icorr = 2.80μA/cm2) of Mg-3Zn-1Mn-1Sr alloy is concluded by immersion tests and electrochemical measurements, and its corrosion morphology manifests uniform corrosion pits and dense structure due to mass accumulation of corrosion products on the damaged surface of Mg matrix. The synergistic effect of the grain size and second phase is used to explain the influence of the variation of Sr content on the corrosion performance of Mg-3Zn-1Mn-xSr alloys. In this paper, the effect of heat treatment on the electrochemical behaviour and current capacity of as-cast and heat-treated of Al-5.5Zn-2.0Mg-xSn alloys (where x = 0.1 and 2.0 %wt.) was studied using potentiodynamic polarisation, open circuit potential (OCP), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and current efficiency measurement. The phases present in the fabricated alloys were determined using an X-ray diffractometer (XRD), while corroded surface morphologies of the samples were studied with the aid of a scanning electron microscope (SEM). The results showed that the presence of higher Sn content (2.0 %wt.) in the Al-5.5Zn-2.0Mg-xSn alloy promoted the formation and growth of Mg2Sn intermetallic, both in the as-cast and heat-treated conditions. The OCP, corrosion potential and EIS results of the heat-treated alloys showed improvements as compared to the as-cast condition. The current efficiency of the as-cast and heat-treated alloy increased from 81.14 to 84.37% for Al-5.5Zn-2.0Mg-0.1Sn (%wt.) and from 82.55 to 85.87% for Al-5.5Zn-2.0Mg-2.0Sn (%wt.).
