Very short-term (0~3 h) radar-based quantitative precipitation forecasting (QPF), also known as nowcasting, plays an essential role in flash flood warning, water resource management, and other hydrological applications. A novel nowcasting method combining radar data and a model wind field was developed and validated with two hurricane precipitation events. Compared with several existing nowcasting approaches, this work attempts to enhance the prediction capabilities from two major aspects. First, instead of using a radar reflectivity field, this work proposes the use of the rainfall rate field estimated from polarimetric radar variables in the motion field derivation. Second, the derived motion field is further corrected by the Rapid Refresh (RAP) model field. With the corrected motion field, the future rainfall rate field is predicted through a linear extrapolation method. The proposed method was validated using two hurricanes: Harvey and Irma. The proposed work shows an enhanced performance according to statistical scores. Compared with the model only and centroid-tracking only approaches, the average probability of detection (POD) increases about 25% and 50%, the average critical success index (CSI) increases about 20% and 37%, and the average false alarm rate (FAR) decreases about 14% and 16%, respectively.

The mountainous Pacific Northwest is prone to heavy winter rainfall, resulting in hundreds of landslides per year, human casualties, and billions of dollars of property damage. Precipitation is a major hydrologic trigger for landslides in the northwestern US and around the world. This paper reviews existing literature to outline a framework to study the linkage between precipitation and landslide hazards over the northwestern US using satellite remote sensing techniques including interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) methods, Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) satellite precipitation products, and Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) satellite soil moisture data, along with correlation analysis and numerical modeling. InSAR time-series displacements provide an indication of landslide occurrence and extent, and help characterize the basal slip surface and slide-body volume based on the law of mass conservation. Precipitation and soil moisture sensed from the space and ground contribute to creating hydrogeological models associated with water infiltration. These crucial parameters are tracked through correlation and slope stability analysis to understand landslide dynamics. We highlight the results on mapping landslides over the state of Washington and analyses at a few select sites over southern Washington and southwestern Oregon. We conclude that satellite observations of landslide motions and the attributing hydrological variables from both radar and optical images improve our understanding of the inter-relationships between the hydrologic processes along with topographic and geologic settings, and the landslide kinematics and mechanisms inferred from time-series measurements and landslide modeling on a regional scale.

Currently, space debris represents a threat for satellites and space-based operations, both in-orbit and during the launching process. The yearly increase in space debris represents a serious concern to major space agencies leading to the development of dedicated space programs to deal with this issue. Ground-based radars can detect Earth orbiting debris down to a few square centimeters and therefore constitute a major building block of a space debris monitoring system. New radar sensors are required in Europe to enhance capabilities and availability of its small radar network capable of tracking and surveying space objects and to respond to the debris increase expected from the New Space economy activities. This article presents ATLAS, a new tracking radar system for debris detection located in Portugal. It starts by an extensive technical description of all the system components followed by a study that estimates its future performance. A section dedicated to waveform design is also presented, since the system allows the usage of several types of pulse modulation schemes such as LFM and phase coded modulations while enabling the development and testing of more advanced ones. By presenting an architecture that is highly modular with fully digital signal processing, ATLAS establishes a platform for fast and easy development, research and innovation. This is motivated by a requirement for robust, autonomy-enabling scene understanding in unknown environments. In the method proposed in this paper, discriminative machine-learning approaches are applied to infer traversability and predict routes from Frequency-Modulated Contunuous-Wave (FMCV) radar frames. Firstly, using geometric features extracted from LiDAR point clouds as inputs to a fuzzy-logic rule set, traversability pseudo-labels are assigned to radar frames from which weak supervision is applied to learn traversability from radar. Secondly, routes through the scanned environment can be predicted after they are learned from the odometry traces arising from traversals demonstrated by the autonomous vehicle (AV). In conjunction, therefore, a model pretrained for traversability prediction is used to enhance the performance of the route proposal architecture. Experiments are conducted on the most extensive radar-focused urban autonomy dataset available to the community. Our key finding is that joint learning of traversability and demonstrated routes lends itself best to a model which understands where the vehicle should feasibly drive. We show that the traversability characteristics can be recovered satisfactorily, so that this recovered representation can be used in optimal path planning, and that an end-to-end formulation including both traversability feature extraction and routes learned by expert demonstration recovers smooth, drivable paths that are comprehensive in their coverage of the underlying road network. We conclude that the proposed system will find use in enabling mapless vehicle autonomy in extreme environments.

The measurement and analysis of the arterial pulse wave provides information about the state of vascular health. When measuring blood pressure according to Riva-Rocci, the systolic and diastolic blood pressure is measured non-invasively with an inflatable pressure cuff on the upper arm. Today&rsquo, s blood pressure monitors analyze the pulse wave in reference to the rising or falling cuff pressure. With the help of additional pulse wave analysis, one can determine the pulse rate and the heart rate variability. In this paper, we investigated the concept, the construction, and the limitations of ultrawideband (UWB) radar and continuous wave (CW) radar, which provide continuous and non-invasive pulse wave measurements. We integrated the sensors into a complete measurement system. We measured the pulse wave of the cuff pressure, the radar sensor (both UWB and CW), the optical sensor, and ultrasonic Doppler as a reference. We discussed the results and the sensor characteristics. The main conclusion was that the resolution of the pulse radar was too low, even with a maximum bandwidth of 10 GHz, to measure pulse waves reliably. The continuous wave radar provides promising results for a phantom if adjusted properly with phase shifts and frequency. In the future, we intend to develop a CW radar solution with frequency adaption.

Breast microwave sensing (BMS) has been studied as a potential technique for cancer detection due to the observed microwave properties of malignant and healthy breast tissues. This work presents a novel radar-based image reconstruction algorithm for use in BMS that reframes the radar image reconstruction process as an optimization problem. A gradient descent optimizer was used to create an optimization-based radar reconstruction (ORR) algorithm. Two hundred scans of MRI-derived breast phantoms were performed with a preclinical BMS system. These scans were reconstructed using the ORR, delay-and-sum (DAS), and delay-multiply-and-sum (DMAS) beamformers. The ORR was observed to improve both sensitivity and specificity compared to DAS and DMAS. The estimated sensitivity and specificity of the DAS beamformer were 19% and 44%, respectively, while for ORR, they were 27% and 56%, representing a relative increase of 42% and 27%. The DAS reconstructions also exhibited a hot-spot image artifact, where a localized region of high intensity that did not correspond to any physical phantom feature would be present in an image. This artifact appeared like a tumour response within the image and contributed to the lower specificity of the DAS beamformer. This artifact was not observed in the ORR reconstructions. This work demonstrates the potential of an optimization-based conceptualization of the radar image reconstruction problem in BMS. The ORR algorithm implemented in this work showed improved diagnostic performance and fewer image artifacts compared to the widely employed DAS algorithm.

Thanks to the availability of a significant amount of inexpensive commercial Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave Radar sensors, designed primarily for the automotive domain, it is interesting to understand if they can be used in alternative applications. It is well known that with a radar system it is possible to identify the micro-Doppler feature of a target, to detect the nature of the target itself (what the target is) or how it is vibrating. In fact, thanks to their high transmission frequency, large bandwidth and very short chirp signals, radars designed for automotive applications are able to provide sub-millimeter resolution and a large detection bandwidth, to the point that it is here proposed to exploit them in the vibrational analysis of a target. The aim is to evaluate what information on the vibrations can be extracted, and what are the performance obtainable. In the present work, the use of a commercial Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave radar is described, and the performances achieved in terms of displacement and vibration frequency measurement of the target are compared with the measurement results obtained through a laser vibrometer, considered as the reference instrument. The attained experimental results show that the radar under test and the reference laser vibrometer achieve comparable outcomes, even in a cluttered scenario.

Extensive efforts have been made to observe the accumulation and melting of seasonal snow. However, making accurate observations of snow water equivalent (SWE) at global scales is challenging. Active radar systems show promise, provided the dielectric properties of the snowpack are accurately constrained. The dielectric constant (k) determines the velocity of a radar wave through snow, which is a critical component of time-of-flight radar techniques such as ground penetrating radar and interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR). However, equations used to estimate k have been validated only for specific conditions with limited in situ validation for seasonal snow applications. The goal of this work was to further understand the dielectric permittivity of seasonal snow under both dry and wet conditions. We utilized extensive direct field observations of k, along with corresponding snow density and liquid water content (LWC) measurements. Data were collected in the Jemez Mountains, NM; Sandia Mountains, NM; Grand Mesa, CO; and Cameron Pass, CO from February 2020 to May 2021. We present empirical relationships based on 146 snow pits for dry snow conditions and 92 independent LWC observations in naturally melting snowpacks. Regression results had r2 values of 0.57 and 0.37 for dry and wet snow conditions, respectively. Our results in dry snow showed large differences between our in situ observations and commonly applied equations. We attribute these differences to assumptions in the shape of the snow grains that may not hold true for seasonal snow applications. Different assumptions, and thus different equations, may be necessary for varying snowpack conditions in different climates, suggesting that further testing is necessary. When considering wet snow, large differences were found between commonly applied equations and our in situ measurements. Many previous equations assume a background (dry snow) k that we found to be inaccurate, as previously stated, and is the primary driver of resulting uncertainty. Our results suggest large errors in SWE (10–15%) or LWC (0.05–0.07 volumetric LWC) estimates based on current equations. The work presented here could prove useful for making accurate observations of changes in SWE using future InSAR opportunities such as NISAR and ROSE-L.

Urbanization increases the amount of impervious surfaces, making accurate information on spatial and temporal expansion trends essential; the challenge is to develop a cost- and labor-effective technique that is compatible with the assessment of multiple geographical locations in developing countries. Several studies have identified the potential of remote sensing and multiple source information in impervious surface quantification. Therefore, this study aims to fuse datasets from the Sentinel 1 and 2 Satellites to map the impervious surfaces of nine Pakistani cities and estimate their growth rates from 2016 to 2020 utilizing the random forest algorithm. All bands in the optical and radar images were resampled to 10 m resolution, projected to same coordinate system and geometrically aligned to stack into a single product. The models were then trained, and classifications were validated with land cover samples from Google Earth’s high-resolution images. Overall accuracies of classified maps ranged from 85% to 98% with the resultant quantities showing a strong linear relationship (R-squared value of 0.998) with the Copernicus Global Land Services data. There was up to 9% increase in accuracy and up to 12 % increase in kappa coefficient from the fused data with respect to optical alone. A McNemar test confirmed the superiority of fused data. Finally, the cities had growth rates ranging from 0.5% to 2.5%, with an average of 1.8%. The information obtained can alert urban planners and environmentalists to assess impervious surface impacts in the cities.

Polarimetric radar data (PRD) have potential to be used in numerical weather prediction (NWP) models to improve convective-scale weather forecasts. However, thus far only a few studies have been undertaken in this research direction. To assimilate PRD in NWP models, a forward operator, also called a PRD simulator, is needed to establish the relation between model physics parameters and polarimetric radar variables. Such a forward operator needs to be accurate enough to make quantitative comparisons between radar observations and model output feasible, and to be computationally efficient so that these observations can be easily incorporated into a data assimilation (DA) scheme. To address this concern, a set of parameterized PRD simulators for the horizontal reflectivity, differential reflectivity, specific differential phase, and cross-correlation coefficient were developed. In this study, we have tested the performance of these new operators in a variational DA system. Firstly, the tangent linear and adjoint (TL/AD) models for these PRD simulators have been developed and checked for the validity. Then, both the forward operator and its adjoint model have been built into the three-dimensional variational (3DVAR) system. Finally, some preliminary DA experiments have been performed with an idealized supercell storm. It is found that the assimilation of PRD, including differential reflectivity and specific differential phase, in addition to radar radial velocity and horizontal reflectivity, can enhance the accuracy of both initial conditions for model hydrometer state variables and ensuing model forecasts. The usefulness of the cross-correlation coefficient is very limited in terms of improving convective-scale data analysis and NWP.

To combat main lobe jamming, preventive measures can be applied to radar in advance based on the concept of active antagonism, and efficient antijamming strategies can be designed through reinforcement learning. However, uncertainties in the radar and the jammer, which will result in a mismatch between the test and training environments, are not considered. Therefore, a robust antijamming strategy design method is proposed in this paper, in which frequency-agile radar and a main lobe jammer are considered. This problem is first formulated under the framework of Wasserstein robust reinforcement learning. Then, the method of imitation learning-based jamming strategy parameterization is presented to express the given jamming strategy mathematically. To reduce the number of parameters that require optimization, a perturbation method inspired by NoisyNet is also proposed. Finally, robust antijamming strategies are designed by incorporating jamming strategy parameterization and jamming strategy perturbation into Wasserstein robust reinforcement learning. The simulation results show that the robust antijamming strategy leads to improved radar performance compared with the nonrobust antijamming strategy when uncertainties exist in the radar and the jammer.

The navigation information about a vessel’s position in the waters covered by the vessel traffic system operation is obtained through supervisory services, mainly from coastal navigation radars. Although today it is possible to simultaneously acquire data from many independent radars, the obtained radar image is inconsistent and consists of several echoes next to each other. This makes it difficult to establish which echo represents the monitored unit. Another problem is the method of determining radar distances, which significantly affect the quality of determining the observation position. Errors in radar distance may occur when determining the radar echoes from large vessels, where the position of the unit is not the same as the edge of the radar echo to which the observation is made. In this article, the authors present a method of improving the measured radar distance. The presented proposal was verified in navigation and maneuvering simulation conditions. It could support the process of determining the ship position in vessel traffic service (VTS) systems with increased accuracy.

In this paper we study the code design problem of a new form of linear frequency modulation phase-coded (LFM-PC) hybrid signal with wide Doppler tolerance based on a range-Doppler discrete ambiguity function (DAF) to get better detection performance and anti-jamming capability. The DAF of the LFM-PC inter pulse signal is derived within the Doppler tolerance. Two optimization models are established. One is single pulse sequence design (SSD) for Doppler tolerance extension based on minimum integral normalized sidelobe level (INSL), the other is multi pulse sequence set design (MSSD) for signal orthogonality based on the minimizing sum of the normalized DAF sidelobe (NDAFSL) and discrete cross ambiguity function (DCAF). Two low-complexity signal optimization methods based on alternating direction method of multiplier (ADMM) are proposed, respectively. The simulation results show that the optimized signals have either wide Doppler tolerance or good orthogonal performance, and the optimization methods (i.e., SSD-ADMM and MSSD-ADMM) have the characteristics of fast convergence speed and low operation amount.

Jamming is a big threat to the survival of a radar system. Therefore, the recognition of radar jamming signal type is a part of radar countermeasure. Recently, convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have shown their effectiveness in radar signal processing, including jamming signal recognition. However, most of existing CNN methods do not regard radar jamming as a complex value signal. In this study, a complex-valued CNN (CV-CNN) is investigated to fully explore the inherent characteristics of a radar jamming signal, and we find that we can obtain better recognition accuracy using this method compared with a real-valued CNN (RV-CNN). CV-CNNs contain more parameters, which need more inference time. To reduce the parameter redundancy and speed up the recognition time, a fast CV-CNN (F-CV-CNN), which is based on pruning, is proposed for radar jamming signal fast recognition. The experimental results show that the CV-CNN and F-CV-CNN methods obtain good recognition performance in terms of accuracy and speed. The proposed methods open a new window for future research, which shows a huge potential of CV-CNN-based methods for radar signal processing.

Conventional direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation methods are primarily used in point source scenarios and based on array signal processing. However, due to the local scattering caused by sea surface, signals observed from radar antenna cannot be regarded as a point source but rather as a spatially dispersed source. Besides, with the advantages of flexibility and comparably low cost, synthetic aperture radar (SAR) is the present and future trend of space-based systems. This paper proposes a novel DOA estimation approach for SAR systems using the simulated radar measurement of the sea surface at different operating frequencies and wind speeds. This article’s forward model is an advanced integral equation model (AIEM) to calculate the electromagnetic scattered from the sea surface. To solve the DOA estimation problem, we introduce a convolutional neural network (CNN) framework to estimate the transmitter’s incident angle and incident azimuth angle. Results demonstrate that the CNN can achieve a good performance in DOA estimation at a wide range of frequencies and sea wind speeds.

Evaluating satellite ability in capturing sudden natural disasters such as heavy snowstorms is a topic of societal interest. This paper presents a rapid qualitative analysis of an intense snowfall in Madrid using data from the Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) mission, specifically the GPM IMERG (Integrated Multi-satellitE Retrievals for GPM) Late Precipitation L3 Half Hourly 0.1° × 0.1° V06 estimates of precipitation (IMERG-Late), and Sentinel-2 imagery. The main research question addressed is the consistency of ground observations, model outputs and satellite data, a topic of major interest for an appropriate and timely societal response to severe weather episodes. Indeed, the choice of the ‘Late’ product over the IMERG ‘Final’ or other GPM datasets was motivated by the availability of data for near real-time response to the storm. Additionally, the 30-min temporal resolution of the product would in principle allow for a detailed analysis of the dynamic processes involved in the snowstorm. Using several complementary data sources, it is shown that optical remote sensing sensors (Sentinel) add value to existing ground data and that is invaluable for rapid response to severe meteorological events such as Filomena. Regarding the GPM precipitation radar, the sampling of the GPM-core satellite was insufficient to provide the IMERG algorithm with enough quality data to correctly represent the actual sequence of precipitation. Without corrections, the total precipitation differs from observations by a factor of two. The difficulties of retrieving precipitation with radiometers over snow-covered surfaces was a major factor for the mismatch. Thus, the calibrated precipitation product did not fully capture the historic storm, and neither did the IR-based element of the IMERG-Late product, which is a neural network merging of microwave and infrared data. It follows that increased temporal resolution of spaceborne microwave sensors and improved retrieval of precipitation from radiometers are critical in order to provide a complete account of these sorts of extreme, significant, short-duration cases. Otherwise, the high-quality, radar and radiometer data feeding the high temporal resolution algorithms simply slip through the grasp of the ascending and descending orbits, leaving little quality data to be interpolated into successive overpasses.

Passive Coherent Location methods and techniques have an established position in the modern state-of-the-art radar. Inexpensive, easy to deploy and undetectable for other sensors, passive radars are growing in popularity. Due to that, a need arises to develop proper methods of any possible kind of countermeasure. In this work, a method of detection and localization of hidden PCL systems is proposed. Authors exploit certain physical features of an RF receiver in order to detect such a passive systems. Results of selected hardware measurements are presented as a proof of concept. Summarized findings are followed by an extensive discussion of conditions related with the method implementation in a real world scenarios.

The motivation for improving gridded precipitation data lies in weather now-casting and flood forecasting. Therefore, over the past decade, Commercial Microwave Link (CML) attenuation data have been used to determine rain rates between microwave antennas, and to produce more accurate countrywide precipitation grids. CML networks offer a unique advantage for precipitation measurements due to their high density. However, these data experience uncertainty from several sources as reported in earlier research. This current work determines the reliability of rainfall measurements for each link by comparing CML-derived rain rates to adjusted weather radar rainfall at the link location, over three months. Dynamic Time Warping (DTW) is applied to the pair of CML/radar time-series data in two study areas, Israel and Netherlands. Based on the DTW amplitude and temporal distance, unreliable links are identified and flagged, and interpolated gridded precipitation data are derived in each country after filtering out those unreliable links. Correlations between CML-derived grids and rain observations from an independent set of gauges, tested over several rain events in both study areas, are higher for the reliable subset of CML than the full set. For certain storm events, the Kendall rank correlation for the set of reliable CML is almost double that of the complete set, demonstrating that improved gridded precipitation data can be obtained by removing unreliable links.

Remote sensing data are considered as one of the primary data sources for precise agriculture. Several studies have demonstrated the excellent capability of radar and optical imagery for crop mapping and biophysical parameter estimation. This paper aims at modeling the crop biophysical parameters, e.g., Leaf Area Index (LAI) and biomass, using a combination of radar and optical Earth observations. We extracted several radar features from polarimetric Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data and Vegetation Indices (VIs) from optical images to model crops’ LAI and dry biomass. Then, the mutual correlations between these features and Random Forest feature importance were calculated. We considered two scenarios to estimate crop parameters. First, Machine Learning (ML) algorithms, e.g., Support Vector Regression (SVR), Random Forest (RF), Gradient Boosting (GB), and Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGB), were utilized to estimate two crop biophysical parameters. To this end, crops’ dry biomass and LAI were estimated using three input data, (1) SAR polarimetric features, (2) spectral VIs, (3) integrating both SAR and optical features. Second, a deep artificial neural network was created. These input data were fed to the mentioned algorithms and evaluated using the in-situ measurements. These observations of three cash crops, including soybean, corn, and canola, have been collected over Manitoba, Canada, during the Soil Moisture Active Validation Experimental 2012 (SMAPVEX-12) campaign. The results showed that GB and XGB have great potential in parameter estimation and remarkably improved accuracy. Our results also demonstrated a significant improvement in the dry biomass and LAI estimation compared to the previous studies. For LAI, the validation Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) was reported as 0.557 m2/m2 for canola using GB, and 0.298 m2/m2 for corn using GB, 0.233 m2/m2 for soybean using XGB. RMSE was reported for dry biomass as 26.29 g/m2 for canola utilizing SVR, 57.97 g/m2 for corn using RF, and 5.00 g/m2 for soybean using GB. The results revealed that the deep artificial neural network had a better potential to estimate crop parameters than the ML algorithms.

This research focused on the quantitative assessment of the surface deformation velocities and rates and their natural and man-made controlling factors at Tengiz Oilfield in Kazakhstan using the Small Baseline Subset remote sensing technique followed by 3D and 2D decompositions and cosine corrections to derive vertical and horizontal movements from line-of-sight (LOS) measurements. In the present research we applied time-series of Sentinel-1 satellite images acquired during 2018–2020. All ground deformation derivatives showed the continuous subsidence at the Tengiz oilfield with increasing velocity. 3D and 2D decompositions of LOS measurements to vertical movement showed that the Tengiz Oil Field 2018–2020 continuously subsided with the maximum annual vertical deformation velocity around 70 mm. Based on the LOS measurements, the maximum annual subsiding velocity was observed to be 60 mm. Cosine corrections of LOS measurements to vertical movement, however, revealed a maximum annual vertical deformation velocity of 77 mm. The vertical deformation confirmed typical patterns of subsidence caused by oil extraction. Detected east-west and north-south horizontal movements at the Tengiz field clearly indicated that the study area crossed by seismic faults is affected by natural tectonic processes. The overall RMSE of 3D decomposed vertical deformation in relationship to LOS measurements and cosine corrections were in the range of 10–13 mm and 6–8 mm, correspondingly. The results of the present research will support operators of oil and gas fields and also other types of infrastructure to evaluate the actual differences of InSAR ground deformation measurements against the required standards and the precision of measurements depending on the operational needs, timeframes and availability of radar imagery.

Drowsiness when in command of a vehicle leads to a decline in cognitive performance that affects driver behavior, potentially causing accidents. Drowsiness-related road accidents lead to severe trauma, economic consequences, impact on others, physical injury and/or even death. Real-time and accurate driver drowsiness detection and warnings systems are necessary schemes to reduce tiredness-related driving accident rates. The research presented here aims at the classification of drowsy and non-drowsy driver states based on respiration rate detection by non-invasive, non-touch, impulsive radio ultra-wideband (IR-UWB) radar. Chest movements of 40 subjects were acquired for 5 m using a lab-placed IR-UWB radar system, and respiration per minute was extracted from the resulting signals. A structured dataset was obtained comprising respiration per minute, age and label (drowsy/non-drowsy). Different machine learning models, namely, Support Vector Machine, Decision Tree, Logistic regression, Gradient Boosting Machine, Extra Tree Classifier and Multilayer Perceptron were trained on the dataset, amongst which the Support Vector Machine shows the best accuracy of 87%. This research provides a ground truth for verification and assessment of UWB to be used effectively for driver drowsiness detection based on respiration.

In the Ferret Valley (NW Italy), anthropic activities coexist close to the Grandes Jorasses massif’s glaciological complex. In the past, break-off events have caused damage to people and infrastructure. These events concerned two specific sectors: the Montitaz Lobe (Planpincieux Glacier) and the Whymper Serac (Grandes Jorasses Glacier). Since 2010, permanent and discontinuous survey campaigns have been conducted to identify potential failure precursors, investigate the glacier instability processes, and explore different monitoring approaches. Most of the existing terrestrial apparatuses that measure the surface kinematics have been adopted in the Grandes Jorasses area. The monitoring sites in this specific area are characterized by severe weather, complex geometry, logistic difficulties, and rapid processes dynamics. Such exceptional conditions highlighted the limitations and potentialities of the adopted monitoring approaches, including robotic total station (RTS), GNSS receivers, digital image correlation applied to time-lapse imagery, and terrestrial radar interferometry (TRI). We examined the measurement uncertainty of each system and their monitoring performances. We discussed their principal limitations and possible use for warning purposes. In the Grandes Jorasses area, the use of a time-lapse camera appeared to be a versatile and cost-effective solution, which, however is not suitable for warning applications, as it does not guarantee data continuity. RTS and GNSS have warning potentialities, but the target installation and maintenance in remote environments remain challenging. TRI is the most effective monitoring system for early warning purposes in such harsh conditions, as it provides near-real-time measurements. However, radar equipment is very costly and requires extreme logistic effort. In this framework, we present data integration strategies to overcome the abovementioned limits and we demonstrate that these strategies are optimal solutions to obtain data continuity and robustness.

For shipborne high-frequency surface wave radar (HFSWR), the movement of the ship has a great impact on the radar echo, thus affecting target detection performance. In this paper, the characteristics of the target echo spectrum and the motion compensation methods for shipborne HFSWR are investigated. Firstly, simulation analysis of echo from a moving target under different ship motion conditions was conducted with a focus on the frequency shift and broadening characteristics of the target echo spectrum. The simulation results show that the non-uniform linear motion and yaw of the ship will shift and broaden the target echoes, resulting in signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) reduction. When the ship velocity and yaw angle change periodically, false target echo peaks will appear in the echo spectrum, which will reduce the accuracy of target detection. To tackle this problem, a motion compensation scheme for the target echo is proposed, including the heading compensation for the effect of yaw and the velocity compensation for non-uniform movement. The influence of the velocity and yaw angle measurement accuracy on the compensation results is also analyzed. Finally, the target echo characteristics and motion compensation method of shipborne HFSWR are verified with experimental data.

Scanning radar enables wide-range imaging through antenna scanning and is widely used for radar warning. The Rayleigh criterion indicates that narrow beams of radar are required to improve the azimuth resolution. However, a narrower beam means a larger antenna aperture. In practical applications, due to platform limitations, the antenna aperture is limited, resulting in a low azimuth resolution. The conventional sparse super-resolution method (SSM) has been proposed for improving the azimuth resolution of scanning radar imaging and achieving superior performance. This method uses the L1 norm to represent the sparse prior of the target and solves the L1 regularization problem to achieve super-resolution imaging under the regularization framework. The resolution of strong-point targets is improved efficiently. However, for some targets with typical shapes, the strong sparsity of the L1 norm treats them as strong-point targets, resulting in the loss of shape characteristics. Thus, we can only see the strong points in its processing results. However, in some applications that need to identify targets in detail, SSM can lead to false judgments. In this paper, a sparse denoising-based super-resolution method (SDBSM) is proposed to compensate for the deficiency of traditional SSM. The proposed SDBSM uses a sparse minimization scheme for denoising, which helps to reduce the influence of noise. Then, the super-resolution imaging is achieved by alternating iterative denoising and deconvolution. As the proposed SDBSM uses the L1 norm for denoising rather than deconvolution, the strong sparsity constraint of the L1 norm is reduced. Therefore, it can effectively preserve the shape of the target while improving the azimuth resolution. The performance of the proposed SDBSM was demonstrated via simulation and real data processing results.

This paper deals with bistatic track association and deghosting in the classical frequency modulation (FM)-based multi-static primary surveillance radar (MSPSR). The main contribution of this paper is a novel algorithm for bistatic track association and deghosting. The proposed algorithm is based on a hierarchical model which uses the Indian buffet process (IBP) as the prior probability distribution for the association matrix. The inference of the association matrix is then performed using the classical reversible jump Markov chain Monte Carlo (RJMCMC) algorithm with the usage of a custom set of the moves proposed by the sampler. A detailed description of the moves together with the underlying theory and the whole model is provided. Using the simulated data, the algorithm is compared with the two alternative ones and the results show the significantly better performance of the proposed algorithm in such a simulated setup. The simulated data are also used for the analysis of the properties of Markov chains produced by the sampler, such as the convergence or the posterior distribution. At the end of the paper, further research on the proposed method is outlined.

Conventionally, in situ rainfall data are used to develop Intensity Duration Frequency (IDF) curves, which are one of the most effective tools for modeling the probability of the occurrence of extreme storm events at different timescales. The rapid recent technological advancements in precipitation sensing, and the finer spatio-temporal resolution of data have made the application of remotely sensed precipitation products more dominant in the field of hydrology. Some recent studies have discussed the potential of remote sensing products for developing IDF curves. This study employs a 19-year NEXRAD Stage-IV high-resolution radar data (2002–2020) to develop IDF curves over the entire state of Texas at a fine spatial resolution. The Annual Maximum Series (AMS) were fitted to four widely used theoretical Extreme Value statistical distributions. Gumble distribution, a unique scenario of the Generalized Extreme Values (GEV) family, was found to be the best model for more than 70% of the state’s area for all storm durations. Validation of the developed IDFs against the operational Atlas 14 IDF values shows a ±27% difference in over 95% of the state for all storm durations. The median of the difference stays between −10% and +10% for all storm durations and for all return periods in the range of (2–100) years. The mean difference ranges from −5% for the 100-year return period to 8% for the 10-year return period for the 24-h storm. Generally, the western and northern regions of the state show an overestimation, while the southern and southcentral regions show an underestimation of the published values.

Ideal transmitting and receiving (Tx/Rx) array response is always desirable in multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar. In practice, nevertheless, Tx/Rx arrays may be susceptible to unknown gain-phase errors (GPE) and yield seriously decreased positioning accuracy. This paper focuses on the direction-of-departure (DOD) and direction-of-arrival (DOA) problem in bistatic MIMO radar with unknown gain-phase errors (GPE). A novel parallel factor (PARAFAC) estimator is proposed. The factor matrices containing DOD and DOA are firstly obtained via PARAFAC decomposition. One DOD-DOA pair estimation is then accomplished from the spectrum searching. Thereafter, the remainder DOD and DOA are achieved by the least squares technique with the previous estimated angle pair. The proposed estimator is analyzed in detail. It only requires one instrumental Tx/Rx sensor, and it outperforms the state-of-the-art algorithms. Numerical simulations verify the theoretical advantages.

The combination of snowfall, snow water equivalent (SWE), and precipitation rate measurements from 39 snow telemetry (SNOTEL) sites in Alaska were used to assess the performance of various precipitation products from satellites, reanalysis, and rain gauges. Observation of precipitation from two water years (2018–2019) of a high-resolution radar/rain gauge data (Stage IV) product was also utilized to give insights into the scaling differences between various products. The outcomes were used to assess two popular methods for rain gauge undercatch correction. It was found that SWE and precipitation measurements at SNOTELs, as well as precipitation estimates based on Stage IV data, are generally consistent and can provide a range within which other products can be assessed. The time-series of snowfall and SWE accumulation suggests that most of the products can capture snowfall events; however, differences exist in their accumulation. Reanalysis products tended to overestimate snow accumulation in the study area, while the current combined passive microwave remote sensing products (i.e., IMERG-HQ) underestimate snowfall accumulation. We found that correction factors applied to rain gauges are effective for improving their undercatch, especially for snowfall. However, no improvement in correlation is seen when correction factors are applied, and rainfall is still estimated better than snowfall. Even though IMERG-HQ has less skill for capturing snowfall than rainfall, analysis using Taylor plots showed that the combined microwave product does have skill for capturing the geographical distribution of snowfall and precipitation accumulation; therefore, bias adjustment might lead to reasonable precipitation estimates. This study demonstrates that other snow properties (e.g., SWE accumulation at the SNOTEL sites) can complement precipitation data to estimate snowfall. In the future, gridded SWE and snow depth data from GlobSnow and Sentinel-1 can be used to assess snowfall and its distribution over broader regions.

Strong variability of Ka-band radar backscattering from short wind waves on the surface of water covered with surfactant films in the presence of internal waves (IW) was studied in wave tank experiments. It has been demonstrated that modulation of Ka-band radar return due to IW strongly depends on the relationship between the phase velocity of IW and the velocity of drifting surfactant films. An effect of the strong increase in surfactant concentration was revealed in convergent zones, associated with IW orbital velocities in the presence of a “resonance” surface steady current, the velocity of which was close to the IW phase velocity. A phenomenological model of suppression and modulations in the spectrum of small-scale wind waves due to films and IW was elaborated. It has been shown that backscatter modulation could not be explained by the modulation of free (linear) millimeter-scale Bragg waves, but was associated with the modulation of bound (parasitic) capillary ripples generated by longer, cm–dm-scale waves—a “cascade” modulation mechanism. Theoretical analysis based on the developed model was found to be consistent with experiments. Field observations which qualitatively illustrated the effect of strong modulation of Ka-band radar backscatter due to IW in the presence of resonance drift of surfactant films are presented.

Foreign Object Debris (FOD) refers to any foreign material on the airfield that may injure and threaten the aircraft and airport system. Due to the complex background on the airfield pavement and weak target echoes in long-distance monitoring, it is not easy to detect objects of various types and sizes. The existing FOD radar system’s detection method has a short effective range, and the detectable objects’ radar cross-section intensity is no less than −20 dBsm. In this paper, we propose an integrated FOD automatic target detection algorithm for millimeter-wave (MMW) surveillance radar to improve small target detection under long-range conditions of over 660 m. The signal form of FOD and a clutter model of ground clutter received by millimeter-wave radar are primarily utilized and established theoretically. The runway edge detection means that it is employed based on the in-continuity features as the runway region of interest during the automatic extraction step. Following the clutter map constant false alarm detection algorithm, we utilize a time-domain algorithm that functions as the vital detection processor. Moreover, an explicit definition of the FOD detection performance is developed in a characteristic quantitative way. This criterion involves an absolute reference value for all FOD radar systems. The well-designed FOD frequency-modulated continuous-wave MMW surveillance radar is utilized, and actual experiments are carried out in a real airport in Beijing, China. The results validate the proposed method’s effectiveness and the superior performance of FOD target detection in long-range situations.

Ground-based weather radar data plays an essential role in monitoring severe convective weather. The detection of such weather systems in time is critical for saving people’s lives and property. However, the limited spatial coverage of radars over the ocean and mountainous regions greatly limits their effective application. In this study, we propose a novel framework of a deep learning-based model to retrieve the radar composite reflectivity factor (RCRF) maps from the Fengyun-4A new-generation geostationary satellite data. The suggested framework consists of three main processes, i.e., satellite and radar data preprocessing, the deep learning-based regression model for retrieving the RCRF maps, as well as the testing and validation of the model. In addition, three typical cases are also analyzed and studied, including a cluster of rapidly developing convective cells, a Northeast China cold vortex, and the Super Typhoon Haishen. Compared with the high-quality precipitation rate products from the integrated Multi-satellite Retrievals for Global Precipitation Measurement, it is found that the retrieved RCRF maps are in good agreement with the precipitation pattern. The statistical results show that retrieved RCRF maps have an R-square of 0.88-0.96, a mean absolute error of 0.3-0.6 dBZ, and a root-mean-square error of 1.2-2.4 dBZ.

One of the most crucial emergencies that require instant action to be taken during traveling across water is the so-called man overboard (MOB). Thus, constant monitoring equipment needs to be installed for the fast notice and detection of the victim to be rescued, if an incident happens. Despite the fact that different installations such as radar sensors, thermal cameras etc., can be handy, a combination of these could be beneficial yet it would increase the complexity. Nevertheless, the full potential may be not reached yet. The key component to what needs to be done in order to achieve the utmost accuracy is artificial intelligence (AI). That is, with the aid of AI, one can deploy an automated surveillance system capable of making its own humanlike decisions regarding such incidents like MOB. To achieve this, fully organized real-time cooperation among the concerned system components is essential. The latter holds since in such dynamically changing operational environments like these, information must be distributed fast, errorless and reliably to the decision center. This study aims to analyze and demonstrate the outcome of an integrated sensor-based system that utilizes AI, implemented for ship incidents. Different machine learning algorithms were used where each one of them made use of information that originated from a cluster of radar sensors located remotely. In particular, the deployed system’s objective is to detect human motion so it can be used to protect against potentially fateful events during ship voyages.

Public domain synthetic-aperture radar (SAR) imagery, particularly from Sentinel-1, has widened the scope of day and night vegetation monitoring, even when cloud cover limits optical Earth observation. Yet, it is challenging to combine SAR images acquired at different incidence angles and from ascending and descending orbits because of the backscatter dependence on the incidence angle. This study demonstrates two transformations that facilitate collective use of Sentinel-1 imagery, regardless of the acquisition geometry, for agricultural monitoring of several crops in Israel (wheat, processing tomatoes, and cotton). First, the radar backscattering coefficient (σ0) was multiplied by the local incidence angle (θ) of every pixel. This transformation improved the empirical prediction of the crop coefficient (Kc), leaf area index (LAI), and crop height in all three crops. The second method, which is based on the radar brightness coefficient (β0), proved useful for estimating Kc, LAI, and crop height in processing tomatoes and cotton. Following the suggested transformations, R2 increased by 0.0172 to 0.668, and RMSE improved by 5 to 52%. Additionally, the models based on the suggested transformations were found to be superior to the models based on the dual-polarization radar vegetation index (RVI). Consequently, vegetation monitoring using SAR imagery acquired at different viewing geometries became more effective.

When the deceptive targets are in the ambiguious range bin but are received at the same range gate with the desired target by the array, the traditional multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar is not able to discriminate between them. Based on the unique range-dependent beampattern of the frequency diverse array (FDA)-MIMO radar, we propose a novel robust mainlobe deceptive target suppression method based on covariance matrix reconstruction to form nulls at the frequency points of the transmit–receive domain where deceptive targets are located. First, the proposed method collects the deceptive targets and noise information in the transmit–receive frequency domain to reconstruct the jammer-noise covariance matrix (JNCM). Then, the covariance matrix of the desired target is constructed in the desired target region, which is assumed to already be known. The transmit–receive steering vector (SV) of the desired target is estimated to be the dominant eigenvector of the desired target covariance matrix. Finally, the weighting vector of the receive beamformer is calculated by combining the reconstructed JNCM and the estimated desired target SV. By implementing the weighting vector at the receiving end, the deceptive targets can be effectively suppressed. The simulation results demonstrate that the proposed method is robust to SV mismatches and provides a signal-to-jamming-plus-noise ratio (SJNR) output that is close to the optimal.

In this paper, a high gain 77-GHz receiver with a low noise figure (NF) was designed and implemented in a 40-nm CMOS process. With the purpose of making better use of active devices, an extra inductor, Ld, is adopted in the new neutralization technique. The three-stage differential low noise amplifier (LNA) using the proposed technique improves the voltage gain and reduces the NF. The receiver design utilizes an active double-balanced Gilbert mixer with a transformer coupling network between the transconductance stage and the switch stage. The flicker noise contribution from the switch MOS transistors is largely reduced due to the low DC current of the switch pairs. The LO signal is provided by an on-chip fundamental voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO) with a tuning range from 70.5 to 78.1 GHz. A conversion gain of 32 dB and a NF of 11.86 dB are achieved at 77 GHz by the designed receiver. The LNA as well as the mixer consume a total DC power of 33.2 mW and occupy a core size of 1 × 0.38 mm2.

Multirotor UAVs have become ubiquitous in commercial and public use. As they become more affordable and more available, the associated security risks further increase, especially in relation to airspace breaches and the danger of drone-to-aircraft collisions. Thus, robust systems must be set in place to detect and deal with hostile drones. This paper investigates the use of deep learning methods to detect UAVs using acoustic signals. Deep neural network models are trained with mel-spectrograms as inputs. In this case, Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) are shown to be the better performing network, compared with Recurrent Neural Networks (RNNs) and Convolutional Recurrent Neural Networks (CRNNs). Furthermore, late fusion methods have been evaluated using an ensemble of deep neural networks, where the weighted soft voting mechanism has achieved the highest average accuracy of 94.7%, which has outperformed the solo models. In future work, the developed late fusion technique could be utilized with radar and visual methods to further improve the UAV detection performance.

The nondestructive characterization of cylindrical objects is needed in many fields, such as medical diagnostics, tree trunk inspection, or concrete column testing. In this study, the radar equation of Lambot et al. is combined with cylindrical Green’s functions to fully model and invert ultra-wideband (UWB) ground-penetrating radar (GPR) data and retrieve the properties of cylindrical objects. Inversion is carried out using a lookup table (LUT) approach followed by local optimization to ensure retrieval of the global minimum of the objective function. Numerical experiments were conducted to analyze the capabilities of the developed inversion procedure to estimate the radius, permittivity, and conductivity of the cylinders. The full-wave model was validated in laboratory conditions on metallic and plastic pipes of different sizes. The adopted radar system consists of a lightweight vector network analyzer (VNA) connected to a single transmitting and receiving horn antenna. The numerical experiments highlighted the complexity of the inverse problem, mainly originating from the multiple propagation modes within cylindrical objects. The laboratory measurements demonstrated the accuracy of the forward modeling and reconstructions in far-field conditions.

Abandoned agricultural land (AAL) is a European problem and phenomenon when agricultural land is gradually overgrown with shrubs and forest. This wood biomass has not yet been systematically inventoried. The aim of this study was to experimentally prove and validate the concept of the satellite-based estimation of woody above-ground biomass (AGB) on AAL in the Western Carpathian region. The analysis is based on Sentinel-1 and -2 satellite data, supported by field research and airborne laser scanning. An improved AGB estimate was achieved using radar and optical multi-temporal data and polarimetric coherence by creating integrated predictive models by multiple regression. Abandonment is represented by two basic AAL classes identified according to overgrowth by shrub formations (AAL1) and tree formations (AAL2). First, an allometric model for AAL1 estimation was derived based on empirical material obtained from blackthorn stands. AAL2 biomass was quantified by different procedures related to (1) mature trees, (2) stumps and (3) young trees. Then, three satellite-based predictive mathematical models for AGB were developed. The best model reached R2 = 0.84 and RMSE = 41.2 t·ha−1 (35.1%), parametrized for an AGB range of 4 to 350 t·ha−1. In addition to 3214 hectares of forest land, we identified 992 hectares of shrub–tree formations on AAL with significantly lower wood AGB than on forest land and with simple shrub composition.

Ground-penetrating radar (GPR) signal recognition depends much on manual feature extraction. However, the complexity of radar detection signals leads to conventional intelligent algorithms lacking sufficient flexibility in concrete pavement detection. Focused on these problems, we proposed an adaptive one-dimensional convolution neural network (1D-CNN) algorithm for interpreting GPR data. Firstly, the training dataset and testing dataset were constructed from the detection signals on pavement samples of different types of distress; secondly, the raw signals are were directly inputted into the 1D-CNN model, and the raw signal features of the radar wave are extracted using the adaptive deep learning network; finally, the output used the Soft-Max classifier to provide the classification result of the concrete pavement distress. Through simulation experiments and actual field testing, the results show that the proposed method has high accuracy and excellent generalization performance compared to the conventional method. It also has practical applications.

Automotive millimeter-wave (MMW) radar is essential in autonomous vehicles due to its robustness in all weather conditions. Traditional commercial automotive radars are limited by their resolution, which makes the object classification task difficult. Thus, the concept of a new generation of four-dimensional (4D) imaging radar was proposed. It has high azimuth and elevation resolution and contains Doppler information to produce a high-quality point cloud. In this paper, we propose an object classification network named Radar Transformer. The algorithm takes the attention mechanism as the core and adopts the combination of vector attention and scalar attention to make full use of the spatial information, Doppler information, and reflection intensity information of the radar point cloud to realize the deep fusion of local attention features and global attention features. We generated an imaging radar classification dataset and completed manual annotation. The experimental results show that our proposed method achieved an overall classification accuracy of 94.9%, which is more suitable for processing radar point clouds than the popular deep learning frameworks and shows promising performance.

Recently, as technology has advanced, the use of in-vehicle infotainment systems has increased, providing many functions. However, if the driver’s attention is diverted to control these systems, it can cause a fatal accident, and thus human–vehicle interaction is becoming more important. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a human–vehicle interaction system to reduce driver distraction during driving. We used voice and continuous-wave radar sensors that require low complexity for application to vehicle environments as resource-constrained platforms. The proposed system applies sensor fusion techniques to improve the limit of single-sensor monitoring. In addition, we used a binarized convolutional neural network algorithm, which significantly reduces the computational workload of the convolutional neural network in command classification. As a result of performance evaluation in noisy and cluttered environments, the proposed system showed a recognition accuracy of 96.4%, an improvement of 7.6% compared to a single voice sensor-based system, and 9.0% compared to a single radar sensor-based system.

Recently, Doppler radar-based foot gesture recognition has attracted attention as a hands-free tool. Doppler radar-based recognition for various foot gestures is still very challenging. So far, no studies have yet dealt deeply with recognition of various foot gestures based on Doppler radar and a deep learning model. In this paper, we propose a method of foot gesture recognition using a new high-compression radar signature image and deep learning. By means of a deep learning AlexNet model, a new high-compression radar signature is created by extracting dominant features via Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) processing, four different foot gestures including kicking, swinging, sliding, and tapping are recognized. Instead of using an original radar signature, the proposed method improves the memory efficiency required for deep learning training by using a high-compression radar signature. Original and reconstructed radar images with high compression values of 90%, 95%, and 99% were applied for the deep learning AlexNet model. As experimental results, movements of all four different foot gestures and of a rolling baseball were recognized with an accuracy of approximately 98.64%. In the future, due to the radar’s inherent robustness to the surrounding environment, this foot gesture recognition sensor using Doppler radar and deep learning will be widely useful in future automotive and smart home industry fields.

The health status of an elderly person can be identified by examining the additive effects of aging along with disease linked to it and can lead to ‘unstable incapacity’. This health status is determined by the apparent decline of independence in activities of daily living (ADLs). Detecting ADLs provides possibilities of improving the home life of elderly people as it can be applied to fall detection systems. This paper presents fall detection in elderly people based on radar image classification by examining their daily routine activities, using radar data that were previously collected for 99 volunteers. Machine learning techniques are used classify six human activities, namely walking, sitting, standing, picking up objects, drinking water and fall events. Different machine learning algorithms, such as random forest, K-nearest neighbours, support vector machine, long short-term memory, bi-directional long short-term memory and convolutional neural networks, were used for data classification. To obtain optimum results, we applied data processing techniques, such as principal component analysis and data augmentation, to the available radar images. The aim of this paper is to improve upon the results achieved using a publicly available dataset to further improve upon research of fall detection systems. It was found out that the best results were obtained using the CNN algorithm with principal component analysis and data augmentation together to obtain a result of 95.30% accuracy. The results also demonstrated that principal component analysis was most beneficial when the training data were expanded by augmentation of the available data. The results of our proposed approach, in comparison to the state of the art, have shown the highest accuracy.

Ship detection with polarimetric synthetic aperture radar (PolSAR) has gained extensive attention due to its widespread application in maritime surveillance. Nevertheless, designing identifiable features to realize accurate ship detection is still challenging. For this purpose, a fine eight-component model-based decomposition scheme is first presented by incorporating four advanced physical scattering models, thus accurately describing the dominant and local structure scattering of ships. Through analyzing the exclusive scattering mechanisms of ships, a discriminative ship detection feature is then constructed from the derived contributions of eight kinds of scattering components. Combined with a spatial information-based guard filter, the efficacy of the feature is further amplified and thus a ship detector is proposed which fulfills the final ship detection. Several qualitative and quantitative experiments are conducted on real PolSAR data and the results demonstrate that the proposed method reaches the highest figure-of-merit (FoM) factor of 0.96, which outperforms the comparative methods in ship detection.

Noise radars employ random waveforms in their transmission as compared to traditional radars. Considered as enhanced Low Probability of Intercept (LPI) radars, they are resilient to interference and jamming and less vulnerable to adversarial exploitation than conventional radars. At its simplest, using a random waveform such as bandpass Gaussian noise as a probing signal provides limited radar performance. After a concise review of a particular noise radar architecture and related correlation processing, this paper justifies the rationale for having synthetic (tailored) noise waveforms and proposes the Combined Spectral Shaping and Peak-to-Average Power Reduction (COSPAR) algorithm, which can be utilized for synthesizing noise-like sequences with a Taylor-shaped spectrum under correlation sidelobe level constraints and assigned Peak-to-Average-Power-Ratio (PAPR). Additionally, the Spectral Kurtosis measure is proposed to evaluate the LPI property of waveforms, and experimental results from field trials are reported.

Usually, in ground-penetrating radar (GPR) datasets, the user defines the limits between the useful signal and the noise through standard filtering to isolate the effective signal as much as possible. However, there are true reflections that mask the coherent reflectors that can be considered noise. In archaeological sites these clutter reflections are caused by scattering with origin in subsurface elements (e.g., isolated masonry, ceramic objects, and archaeological collapses). Its elimination is difficult because the wavelet parameters similar to coherent reflections and there is a risk of creating artefacts. In this study, a procedure to filter the clutter reflection noise (CRN) from GPR datasets is presented. The CRN filter is a singular value decomposition-based method (SVD), applied in the 2D spectral domain. This CRN filtering was tested in a dataset obtained from a controlled laboratory environment, to establish a mathematical control of this algorithm. Additionally, it has been applied in a 3D-GPR dataset acquired in the Roman villa of Horta da Torre (Fronteira, Portugal), which is an uncontrolled environment. Various remote sensing technologies have been applied in intelligent vehicles and robots for surrounding-environment recognition. However, these technologies experience difficulties in detecting pedestrians in blind areas and their motions, such as rush-out behaviors. To address this issue, we present a radar-based technique for the detection of pedestrians in blind areas and the classification of different risks of rush-out behaviors among detected pedestrians. We verify their ability to detect pedestrian motion in blind areas by conducting experiments in two environments with blind areas formed by outdoor cars and indoor walls. Then, the classification of motions with different risks of rush-out behaviors among pedestrians detected in the blind areas is demonstrated. We use the clustering method to accurately classify several types of behaviors with different rush-out risks in both environments.

Heart rate measurement using a continuous wave Doppler radar sensor (CW-DRS) has been applied to cases where non-contact detection is required, such as the monitoring of vital signs in home healthcare. However, as a CW-DRS measures the speed of movement of the chest surface, which comprises cardiac and respiratory signals by body motion, extracting cardiac information from the superimposed signal is difficult. Therefore, it is challenging to extract cardiac information from superimposed signals. Herein, we propose a novel method based on a matched filter to solve this problem. The method comprises two processes: adaptive generation of a template via singular value decomposition of a trajectory matrix formed from the measurement signals, and reconstruction by convolution of the generated template and measurement signals. The method is validated using a dataset obtained in two different experiments, i.e., experiments involving supine and seated subject postures. Absolute errors in heart rate and standard deviation of heartbeat interval with references were calculated as 1.93±1.76bpm and 57.0±28.1s for the lying posture, and 9.72±7.86bpm and 81.3±24.3s for the sitting posture.

Passive multistatic radars have gained a lot of interest in recent years as they offer many benefits contrary to conventional radars. Here in this research, our aim is detection of target in a passive multistatic radar system. The system contains a single transmitter and multiple spatially distributed receivers comprised of both the surveillance and reference antennas. The system consists of two main parts: 1. Local receiver, and 2. Fusion center. Each local receiver detects the signal, processes it, and passes the information to the fusion center for final detection. To take the advantage of spatial diversity, we apply major fusion techniques consisting of hard fusion and soft fusion for the case of multistatic passive radars. Hard fusion techniques are analyzed for the case of different local radar detectors. In terms of soft fusion, a blind technique called equal gain soft fusion technique with random matrix theory-based local detector is analytically and theoretically analyzed under null hypothesis along with the calculation of detection threshold. Furthermore, six novel random matrix theory-based soft fusion techniques are proposed. All the techniques are blind in nature and hence do not require any knowledge of transmitted signal or channel information. Simulation results illustrate that proposed fusion techniques increase detection performance to a reasonable extent compared to other blind fusion techniques.

High-frequency (HF) surface-wave radar has a wide range of applications in marine monitoring due to its long-distance, wide-area, and all-weather detection ability. However, the accurate detection of HF radar vessels is severely restricted by strong clutter and interference, causing the echo of vessels completely submerged by clutter. As a result, the target cannot be detected and tracked for a period of time under the influence of strong clutter, which causes broken trajectories. To solve this problem, we propose an HF radar-vessel trajectory-prediction method based on a multi-scale convolutional neural network (MSCNN) that combines a gated recurrent unit and attention mechanism (GRU-AM) and a fusion with an autoregressive (AR) model. The vessel’s latitude and longitude information obtained by the HF radar is sent into the convolutional neural network (CNN) with different window lengths in parallel, and feature fusion is performed on the extracted multi-scale features. The deep GRU model is built to learn the time series with the GRU structure to preserve historical information. Different weights are given to the features using the temporal attention mechanism (AM), which helps the network learn the key information. The linear information on latitude and longitude at the current timestep is forecast by combining the AR model with the trajectory output from the AM to achieve a combination of linear and nonlinear prediction models. To make full use of the HF radar tracking information, the broken trajectory prediction is carried out by forward and backward computation using data from before and after the fracture, respectively. Weights are then assigned to the two predicted results by the entropy-value method to obtain the final ship trajectory by weighted summation. Field experiments show that the proposed method can accurately forecast the trajectories of vessels concealed in clutter. In comparison with other mainstream methods, the new method performs better in estimation accuracy for HF radar vessels concealed in clutter.
