Background: The system-integrated technology-enabled model of care (SINEMA) trial aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a community-based multi-component intervention for secondary prevention of stroke in rural China. Objective: To present the detailed statistical analysis plan for the trial prior to database locking and data analysis. Methods: The detailed analysis plan outlines primary and secondary outcome measures, describes the over-arching data analysis principles to be adopted as well as more detailed descriptions of specific analytical approaches for effectiveness analyses, as well strategies to handle missing outcome data. Discussion: Publication of the statistical analysis plan increases the transparency of the data analysis procedure and reduces potential bias in trial reporting. Background: EXtending the time for Thrombolysis in Emergency Neurological Deficits (EXTEND) is a randomized, multicenter, double-blinded, placebo-controlled phase 3 trial to test the hypothesis of extending the thrombolysis time window to 9 h from stroke onset and in wake-up stroke (WUS) patients. Objective: To formulate the detailed statistical analysis plan for the EXTEND trial prior to database lock. This statistical analysis plan is based on the published and registered EXTEND trial protocol and is developed by the blinded steering committee and management team. Results: The developed EXTEND statistical analysis plan is transparent, verifiable, and predetermined before the database lock. It is consistent with reporting standards for clinical trials and provides for clear and open reporting. Conclusions: Publication of a statistical analysis plan serves to reduce potential trial analysis and reporting bias and outlines pre-specified analyses to quantify the benefits and harms of extending the thrombolysis time window to 9 h from stroke onset and in wake-up stroke patients. • HyM3D is an automatic algorithm for the digital 3D reconstruction of a defective neurocranium; the resulting model can be used as a reference for the preoperative design of devices for cranioplasty. • The innovative idea is to retrieve the full shape of the exocranial surface by using an external source to guide the reconstruction actually performed through a surface-interpolation method. • With respect to the existing alternatives, HyM3D does not require any user interaction except for the selection of a point on the edge of the gap to be reconstructed. • The external source used to guide the surface interpolation is attained by interpreting, through statistical methods, the shape information encoded in a set of healthy cranial vaults (according to statistical shape Analysis). • HyM3D has been tested on several test cases, both synthetic and real, proving to be robust and effective in providing consistent results also when facing large defects. The ability to accomplish a consistent restoration of a missing or deformed anatomical area is a fundamental step for defining a custom implant, especially in the maxillofacial and cranial reconstruction where the aesthetical aspect is crucial for a successful surgical outcome. At the same time, this task is also the most difficult, time-consuming, and complicated across the whole reconstruction process. This is mostly due to the high geometric complexity of the anatomical structures, insufficient references, and significant interindividual anatomical heterogeneity. Numerous solutions, specifically for the neurocranium, have been put forward in the scientific literature to address the reconstruction issue, but none of them has yet been persuasive enough to guarantee an easily automatable approach with a consistent shape reconstruction. This work aims to present a novel reconstruction method (named HyM3D) for the automatic restoration of the exocranial surface by ensuring both the symmetry of the resulting skull and the continuity between the reconstructive patch and the surrounding bone. To achieve this goal, the strengths of the Template-based methods are exploited to provide knowledge of the missing or deformed region and to guide a subsequent Surface Interpolation-based algorithm. HyM3D is an improved version of a methodology presented by the authors in a previous publication for the restoration of unilateral defects. Differently from the first version, the novel procedure applies to all kinds of cranial defects, whether they are unilateral or not. The presented method has been tested on several test cases, both synthetic and real, and the results show that it is reliable and trustworthy, providing a consistent outcome with no user intervention even when dealing with complex defects. HyM3D method proved to be a valid alternative to the existing approaches for the digital reconstruction of a defective cranial vault; furthermore, with respect to the current alternatives, it demands less user interaction since the method is landmarks-independent and does not require any patch adaptation. An open-source database containing metrology data for X-ray mirrors is presented. It makes available metrology data (mirror heights and slopes profiles) that can be used with simulation tools for calculating the effects of optical surface errors in the performances of an optical instrument, such as a synchrotron beamline. A typical case is the degradation of the intensity profile at the focal position in a beamline due to mirror surface errors. This database for metrology (DABAM) aims to provide to the users of simulation tools the data of real mirrors. The data included in the database are described in this paper, with details of how the mirror parameters are stored. An accompanying software is provided to allow simple access and processing of these data, calculate the most usual statistical parameters, and also include the option of creating input files for most used simulation codes. Nursing Home Compare (NHC) is a federal government website providing information for selecting a nursing home. However, not many consumers were aware of or can locate the site. This study analyzed 50 official state and District of Columbia websites from September through December 2013. Using Google “inlink:” operator, this study evaluated the visibility and findability of NHC links in each state-level website. The results show that a link to NHC is available in all states except for Connecticut, Florida, and Michigan. Although it took only 4.7 clicks on average to the page with a NHC link, consumers may still have difficulty to find NHC from a state website. This article provides a snapshot of the visibility and findability of NHC and indicates a need for further investigation of promising website dissemination strategies not yet adequately evaluated. Background: Nosocomial sepsis (NS) in newborns (NBs) is associated with high mortality rates and low microbial recovery rates. To overcome the latter problem, new techniques in molecular biology are being used. Objectives: To evaluate the diagnostic efficacy of SeptiFast test for the diagnosis of nosocomial sepsis in the newborn. Materials and Methods: 86 blood specimens of NBs with suspected NS (NOSEP-1 Test > 8 points) were analyzed using Light Cycler SeptiFast (LC-SF) a real-time multiplex PCR instrument. The results were analyzed with the Roche SeptiFast Identification Software. Another blood sample was collected to carry out a blood culture (BC). Results: Sensitivity (Sn) and specificity (Sp) of 0.69 and 0.65 respectively, compared with blood culture (BC) were obtained for LC-SF. Kappa index concordance between LC-SF and BC was 0.21. Thirteen (15.11%) samples were BC positive and 34 (31.39%) were positive with LC-SF tests. Conclusions: Compared with BC, LC-SF allows the detection of a greater number of pathogenic species in a small blood sample (1 mL) with a shorter response time. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Female sex workers (FSW) represent a population confronted with an array of intersecting social problems. We explore the case of FSW in Nuevo Laredo and Ciudad Juarez to understand the everyday violence associated with sex work within the unique context of Mexico. Life history interviews were conducted with 109 FSW revealing violent acts by clients and other sex industry employees (bar owners, police, other FSW). The risk of violence by different types of persons associated with the sex work industry varied by venue and geographic area.
