This work explores the topological properties of altermagnets, a novel class of collinear magnetic materials. We employ equivariant K-theory of magnetic groups and Hamiltonian models to formulate a robust $C^z_4 \mathbb{T}$ topological invariant to classify 2D and 3D altermagnetic systems. Our findings demonstrate that the spin Chern number serves as a robust topological index, corresponding to the half-quantized Chern number of the divided Brillouin zone. This indicator enables the prediction of a topologically protected 2D altermagnetic insulators and 3D Weyl altermagnetic semimetals, highlighting the relationship between altermagnetism and topological phases. We present a neural network emulator to constrain the thermal parameters of the intergalactic medium (IGM) at $\displaystyle{5.4}\le{z}\le{6.0}$ using the Lyman-$\displaystyle\alpha$ (Ly$\displaystyle\alpha$) forest flux auto-correlation function. Our auto-differentiable JAX-based framework accelerates the surrogate model generation process using approximately 100 sparsely sampled Nyx hydrodynamical simulations with varying combinations of thermal parameters, i.e., the temperature at mean density $\displaystyle{T}_{{0}}$, the slope of the temperature$\displaystyle-$density relation $\displaystyle\gamma$, and the mean transmission flux $\displaystyle{\langle}{F}{\rangle}$. We show that this emulator has a typical accuracy of 1.0% across the specified redshift range. Bayesian inference of the IGM thermal parameters, incorporating emulator uncertainty propagation, is further expedited using NumPyro Hamiltonian Monte Carlo. We compare both the inference results and computational cost of our framework with the traditional nearest-neighbor interpolation approach applied to the same set of mock Ly$\alpha$ flux. By examining the credibility contours of the marginalized posteriors for $\displaystyle{T}_{{0}},\gamma,\text{and}{\langle}{F}{\rangle}$ obtained using the emulator, the statistical reliability of measurements is established through inference on 100 realistic mock data sets of the auto-correlation function.

We study the birational geometry of the Kummer surfaces associated to the Jacobian varieties of genus two curves, with a particular focus on fields of characteristic two. In order to do so, we explicitly compute a projective embedding of the Jacobian of a general genus two curve and, from this, we construct its associated Kummer surface. This explicit construction produces a model for desingularised Kummer surfaces over any field of characteristic not two, and specialising these equations to characteristic two provides a model of a partial desingularisation. Adapting the classic description of the Picard lattice in terms of tropes, we also describe how to explicitly find completely desingularised models of Kummer surfaces whenever the $p$-rank is not zero. In the final section of this paper, we compute an example of a Kummer surface with everywhere good reduction over a quadratic number field, and draw connections between the models we computed and a criterion that determines when a Kummer surface has good reduction at two., Comment: 34 pages. The electronic band structure of monolayer phosphorene is thoroughly studied by considering the presence of spin-orbit interaction. We employ a multiorbital Slater-Koster tight-binding approach to derive effective k.p-type Hamiltonians that describes the dominant spin-orbit coupling (SOC) effects of the Rashba and intrinsic origin at the high {\Gamma} and S high symmetry points in phosphorene. In the absence of SOC effects a minimal admixture of pz and py atomic orbitals suffices to reproduce the well known anisotropy of highest valence and the lowest conduction bands at the {\Gamma}-point, consistent with density functional theory (DFT) and k.p methods. In contrast, the inclusion of the px and s atomic orbitals are rather crucial for an adequate description of the SOC effects in phosphorene at low energies, particularly at the S-point. We introduce useful analytical expressions for the Rashba and intrinsic SOC parameters in terms of the relevant Slater-Koster integrals. In addition, we report simple formulas for the interband dipole-strenghts, revealing the nature of the strong anisotropic behavior of its lower bands. We derive the most general expression for the Skyrmion topological charge for a two-dimensional spin texture, valid for any type of boundary conditions or for any arbitrary spatial region within the texture. It reduces to the usual one $Q = 1/4\pi \iint \vec f \cdot \left(\partial_x \vec f \times \partial_y \vec f\right)$ for the appropriate boundary conditions, with $\vec f$ the spin texture. The general expression resembles the Gauss-Bonet theorem for the Euler-Poincar\'e characteristic of a 2D surface, but it has definite differences, responsible for the assignment of the proper signs of the Skyrmion charges. Additionally, we show that the charge of a single Skyrmion is the product of the value of the normal component of the spin texture at the singularity times the Index or winding number of the transverse texture, a generalization of a Poincar\'e theorem. We illustrate our general results analyzing in detail a two-component spinor Bose-Einstein condensate in 2D in the presence of an external magnetic field, via the Gross-Pitaevskii equation. The condensate spin textures present Skyrmions singularities at the spatial locations where the transverse magnetic field vanishes. We show that the ensuing superfluid vortices and Skyrmions have the same value for their corresponding topological charges, in turn due to the structure of the magnetic field., Comment: 32 pages, 15 figures

Substance use disorders (SUDs) are a growing concern globally, necessitating enhanced understanding of the problem and its trends through data-driven research. Social media are unique and important sources of information about SUDs, particularly since the data in such sources are often generated by people with lived experiences. In this paper, we introduce Reddit-Impacts, a challenging Named Entity Recognition (NER) dataset curated from subreddits dedicated to discussions on prescription and illicit opioids, as well as medications for opioid use disorder. The dataset specifically concentrates on the lesser-studied, yet critically important, aspects of substance use--its clinical and social impacts. We collected data from chosen subreddits using the publicly available Application Programming Interface for Reddit. We manually annotated text spans representing clinical and social impacts reported by people who also reported personal nonmedical use of substances including but not limited to opioids, stimulants and benzodiazepines. Our objective is to create a resource that can enable the development of systems that can automatically detect clinical and social impacts of substance use from text-based social media data. The successful development of such systems may enable us to better understand how nonmedical use of substances affects individual health and societal dynamics, aiding the development of effective public health strategies. In addition to creating the annotated data set, we applied several machine learning models to establish baseline performances. Specifically, we experimented with transformer models like BERT, and RoBERTa, one few-shot learning model DANN by leveraging the full training dataset, and GPT-3.5 by using one-shot learning, for automatic NER of clinical and social impacts. In this work, we propose the average spin Chern number (ASCN) as an indicator of the topological significance of the spin degree of freedom within insulating materials. Whenever this number is a non-zero even integer, it distinguishes the material as a spin Chern insulator, and the number is a topological invariant whenever there is a symmetry that commutes with the spin and protects Chern numbers. If this number is not zero, it indicates that the material has non-trivial spin transport properties, and it lies close to the value of the spin Hall conductivity (SHC) within the bandgap. For systems where the spin commutes with the Hamiltonian, the ASCN matches the SHC. When the non-commutativity of the spin with the Hamiltonian cannot be neglected, both values are non-zero simultaneously. The ASCN is therefore a good complement for the intrinsic contribution of the SHC, and permits to detect topological information of the material which is not possible alone from the value of the SHC., Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures

The anomalous Nernst effect generates transverse voltage to the applied thermal gradient in magnetically ordered systems. The effect was previously considered excluded in compensated magnetic materials with collinear ordering. However, in the recently identified class of compensated magnetic materials, dubbed altermagnets, time-reversal symmetry breaking in the electronic band structure makes the presence of the anomalous Nernst effect possible despite the collinear spin arrangement. In this work, we investigate epitaxial Mn5Si3 thin films known to be an altermagnetic candidate. We show that the material manifests a sizable anomalous Nernst coefficient despite the small net magnetization of the films. The measured magnitudes of the anomalous Nernst coefficient reach a scale of microVolts per Kelvin. We support our magneto-thermoelectric measurements by density-functional theory calculations of the material's spin-split electronic structure, which allows for the finite Berry curvature in the reciprocal space. Furthermore, we present our calculations of the intrinsic Berry-curvature Nernst conductivity, which agree with our experimental observations.

The Bayesian reweighting procedure is extended to the case of multiple independent extractions of transverse momentum dependent parton distributions (TMDs). By exploiting the data on transverse single spin asymmetries, $A_N$, for inclusive pion production in polarized proton-proton collisions measured at RHIC, we perform a simultaneous reweighting of the quark Sivers, transversity and Collins TMD functions extracted from semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS) and $e^+ e^-$ annihilation into hadron pairs. The impact of the implementation of the Soffer bound, as well as the differences between older and newer $A_N$ data, are investigated. The agreement with $A_N$ data at large-$x_F$ values, a kinematical region complementary to those explored in SIDIS measurements, is enhanced, improving the knowledge of the polarized quark TMDs in the large-$x$ region., Comment: 11 pages, 11 figures. We present a first practical implementation of a recently proposed hadron structure oriented (HSO) approach to TMD phenomenology applied to Drell-Yan like processes, including lepton pair production at moderate $Q^2$ and $Z^0$ boson production. We compare and contrast general features of our methodology with other common practices and emphasize the improvements derived from our approach that we view as essential for applications where extracting details of nonperturbative transverse hadron structure is a major goal. These include the HSO's preservation of a basic TMD parton-model-like framework even while accounting for full TMD factorization and evolution, explicit preservation of the integral relationship between TMD and collinear pdfs, and the ability to meaningfully compare different theoretical models of nonperturbative TMD parton distributions. In our examples, we show that there is significant sensitivity at moderate $Q^2$ to both the form of the nonperturbative transverse momentum dependence and the parametrization of collinear parton densities. However, we also find that evolving to $Q^2 = M_Z^2$, without fitting, results in a satisfactory postdiction of existing data for $Z^0$ production, nearly independently of the modeling of nonperturbative transverse momentum behavior. We argue that this demonstrates that moderate $Q$ measurements should be given greater weight than high $Q$ measurements in extractions of nonperturbative transverse momentum dependence. We also obtain new extractions of the nonperturbative Collins-Soper kernel within the HSO approach. Conventional antiferromagnets are known for their time-reversal symmetry in their electronic structure, which results in a zero anomalous Hall coefficient. On the other hand, compensated magnets with noncollinear or canted moments or altermagnets can yield a nonzero anomalous Hall signal and a nondissipative transversal current. While high-symmetry systems typically exhibit an isotropic Hall effect, more interesting are low-symmetry systems, such as hematite, which demonstrates exceptional magnetotransport behavior as it becomes conductive upon slight Ti doping. We scrutinize the magnetotransport in Titanium-doped hematite, revealing a pronounced and unconventional symmetry dependence, particularly contingent on crystal orientation. Our findings establish a compelling correlation between our experimental observations and the classification of hematite as an altermagnet with anisotropic magnetotransport and anomalous Hall effect. Remarkably, our observations result from measurements in the hopping-transport regime, showing that particular transport properties in altermagnets are not limited to conventional band conduction.

The Edelstein effect is the origin of the spin-orbit torque: a current-induced torque that is used for the electrical control of ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic materials. This effect originates from the relativistic spin-orbit coupling, which necessitates utilizing materials with heavy elements. Here we show that in magnetic materials with non-collinear magnetic order, the Edelstein effect and consequently also a current-induced torque can exist even in the absence of the spin-orbit coupling. Using group symmetry analysis, model calculations, and realistic simulations on selected compounds, we identify large classes of non-collinear magnet candidates and demonstrate that the current-driven torque is of similar magnitude as the celebrated spin-orbit torque in conventional transition metal structures. The quantum nature of electron spin is crucial for establishing topological invariants in real materials. Since the spin does not in general commute with the Hamiltonian, some of the topological features of the material can be extracted from its study. In insulating materials, the spin operator induces a projected operator on valence states called the spin valence operator. Its spectrum contains information with regard to the different phases of the spin Chern class. If the spin valence spectrum is gapped, the spin Chern numbers are constant along parallel planes thus defining spin Chern insulating materials. If the spin valence spectrum is not gapped, the changes in the spin Chern numbers occur whenever this spectrum is zero. Materials whose spin valence spectrum is gapless will be denoted spin Weyl topological insulators and their definition together with some of their properties will be presented in this work. The classification of materials from the properties of the spin valence operator provides a characterization that complements the existing list of topological invariants., Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures

Altermagnets (AM) are a recently discovered third class of collinear magnets, distinctly different from conventional ferromagnets (FM) and antiferromagnets (AF). AM have been actively researched in the last few years, but two aspects so far remain unaddressed: (1) Are there realistic 2D single-layer altermagnets? And (2) is it possible to functionalize a conventional AF into AM by external stimuli? In this paper we address both issues by demonstrating how a well-known 2D AF, MnP(S,Se)$_3$ can be functionalized into strong AM by applying out-of-plane electric field. Of particular interest is that the induced altermagnetism is of a higher even-parity wave symmetry than expected in 3D AM with similar crystal symmetries. We confirm our finding by first-principles calculations of the electronic structure and magnetooptical response. We also propose that recent observations of the time-reversal symmetry breaking in the famous Fe-based superconducting chalchogenides, either in monolayer form or in the surface layer, may be related not to an FM, as previously assumed, but to the induced 2D AM order. Finally, we show that monolayer FeSe can simultaneously exhibit unconventional altermagnetic time-reversal symmetry breaking and quantized spin Hall conductivity indicating possibility to research an intriquing interplay of 2D altermagnetism with topological and superconducting states within a common crystal-potential environment., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures

Lifted Kramers spin-degeneracy has been among the central topics of condensed-matter physics since the dawn of the band theory of solids. It underpins established practical applications as well as current frontier research, ranging from magnetic-memory technology to topological quantum matter. Traditionally, lifted Kramers spin-degeneracy has been considered to originate from two possible internal symmetry-breaking mechanisms. The first one refers to time-reversal symmetry breaking by magnetization of ferromagnets, and tends to be strong due to the non-relativistic exchange-coupling origin. The second mechanism applies to crystals with broken inversion symmetry, and tends to be comparatively weaker as it originates from the relativistic spin-orbit coupling. A recent theory work based on spin-symmetry classification has identified an unconventional magnetic phase, dubbed altermagnetic, that allows for lifting the Kramers spin degeneracy without net magnetization and inversion-symmetry breaking. Here we provide the confirmation using photoemission spectroscopy and ab initio calculations. We identify two distinct unconventional mechanisms of lifted Kramers spin degeneracy generated by the altermagnetic phase of centrosymmetric MnTe with vanishing net magnetization. Our observation of the altermagnetic lifting of the Kramers spin degeneracy can have broad consequences in magnetism. It motivates exploration and exploitation of the unconventional nature of this magnetic phase in an extended family of materials, ranging from insulators and semiconductors to metals and superconductors, that have been either identified recently or perceived for many decades as conventional antiferromagnets.

Progress in magnetoelectric materials is hindered by apparently contradictory requirements for time-reversal symmetry broken and polar ferroelectric electronic structure in common ferromagnets and antiferromagnets. Alternative routes could be provided by recent discoveries of a time-reversal symmetry breaking anomalous Hall effect in noncollinear magnets and altermagnets, but hitherto reported bulk materials are not polar. Here, we report the observation of a spontaneous anomalous Hall effect in doped AgCrSe$_2$, a layered polar semiconductor with an antiferromagnetic coupling between Cr spins in adjacent layers. The anomalous Hall resistivity 3 $\mu\Omega$ cm is comparable to the largest observed in compensated magnetic systems to date, and is rapidly switched off when the angle of an applied magnetic field is rotated to $\sim 80^{\circ}$ from the crystalline $c$-axis. Our ionic gating experiments show that the anomalous Hall conductivity magnitude can be enhanced by modulating the $p$-type carrier density. We also present theoretical results that suggest the anomalous Hall effect is driven by Berry curvature due to noncollinear antiferromagnetic correlations among Cr spins, which are consistent with the previously suggested magnetic ordering in AgCrSe$_2$. We use Monte Carlo techniques to simulate an organized prediction competition between a group of a scientific experts acting under the influence of a ``self-governing'' prediction reward algorithm. Our aim is to illustrate the advantages of a specific type of reward distribution rule that is designed to address some of the limitations of traditional forecast scoring rules. The primary extension of this algorithm as compared with standard forecast scoring is that it incorporates measures of both group consensus and question relevance directly into the reward distribution algorithm. Our model of the prediction competition includes parameters that control both the level of bias from prior beliefs and the influence of the reward incentive. The Monte Carlo simulations demonstrate that, within the simplifying assumptions of the the model, experts collectively approach belief in objectively true facts, so long as reward influence is high and the bias stays below a critical threshold. In helioseismic studies, an observational parameter of primary concern is the P-angle, the angle along which lies the solar axis of rotation for a given image. For the six observing sites employed by The Global Oscillation Network Group (GONG), this angle acts additionally as a marker of relative image orientation, allowing concurrent images to be precisely aligned and merged to provide the highest possible quality data. In this report, we present and investigate two methods of determining the P-angle via the rotational signature embedded in solar Dopplergram images by examining the large-scale structure of the observed velocity field. As with other studies, we find that the Dopplergram produces a time-varying 'P-angle' signature according to the presentation of various physical phenomena across the solar surface, but with the potential for sub-degree identification of the axis of rotation. However, close agreement between separate P-angle-finding techniques also reveals current limitations to P-angle determination that are imposed by the calibration state of the GONG-site Dopplergrams, leaving these P-angle-finding methods for GONG with errors on the scale of less than a degree between two site., Comment: 36 pages, 32 figures

Parametrizing TMD parton densities and fragmentation functions in ways that consistently match their large transverse momentum behavior in standard collinear factorization has remained notoriously difficult. We show how the problem is solved in a recently introduced set of steps for combining perturbative and nonperturbative transverse momentum in TMD factorization. Called a ``bottom-up'' approach in a previous article, here we call it a ``hadron structure oriented'' (HSO) approach to emphasize its focus on preserving a connection to the TMD parton model interpretation. We show that the associated consistency constraints improve considerably the agreement between parametrizations of TMD functions and their large-$k_T$ behavior, as calculated in collinear factorization. The procedure discussed herein will be important for guiding future extractions of TMD parton densities and fragmentation functions and for testing TMD factorization and universality. We illustrate the procedure with an application to semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS) structure functions at an input scale $Q_0$, and we show that there is improved consistency between different methods of calculating at moderate transverse momentum. The magnetic structure, magnetoresistance, and Hall effect of non-centrosymmetric magnetic semimetal NdAlGe are investigated revealing an unusual magnetic state and anomalous transport properties that are associated with the electronic structure of this non-centrosymmetric compound. The magnetization and magnetoresistance measurements are both highly anisotropic and indicate an Ising-like magnetic system. The magnetic structure is complex in that it involves three magnetic ordering vectors including an incommensurate spin density wave and commensurate ferrimagnetic state in zero field. We have discovered a large anomalous Hall conductivity that reaches = 430 {\Omega}-1cm-1 implying that it originates from an intrinsic Berry curvature effect stemming from Weyl nodes found in the electronic structure. These electronic structure calculations indicate the presence of nested Fermi surface pockets with nesting wave vectors similar to the measured magnetic ordering wavevector and the presence of Weyl nodes in proximity to the Fermi surface. We associate the incommensurate magnetic structure with the large anomalous Hall response to be the result of the combination of Fermi surface nesting and the Berry curvature associated with Weyl nodes., Comment: 46 pages, 12 figures

The factorization theorems of quantum chromodynamics (QCD) apply equally well to most simple quantum field theories that require renormalization but where direct calculations are much more straightforward. Working with these simpler theories is convenient for stress-testing the limits of the factorization program and for examining general properties of the parton density functions (pdfs) or other correlation functions that might be necessary for a factorized description of a process. With this view in mind, we review the steps of factorization in a real scalar Yukawa field theory for both deep inelastic scattering (DIS) and semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS) cross sections. In the case of SIDIS, we illustrate how to separate the small transverse momentum region, where transverse momentum dependent (TMD) pdfs are needed, from a purely collinear large transverse momentum region, and we examine the influence of subleading power corrections. We also review the steps for formulating TMD factorization in transverse coordinate space, and we study the effect of transforming to the well-known $b_*$-scheme. Within the Yukawa theory, we investigate the consequences of switching to a generalized parton model (GPM) approach, and compare with a fully factorized approach. Magnons in ferromagnets have one chirality, and typically are in the GHz range and have a quadratic dispersion near the zero wavevector. In contrast, magnons in antiferromagnets are commonly considered to have bands with both chiralities that are degenerate across the entire Brillouin zone, and to be in the THz range and to have a linear dispersion near the center of the Brillouin zone. Here we theoretically demonstrate a new class of magnons on a prototypical $d$-wave altermagnet RuO$_2$ with the compensated antiparallel magnetic order in the ground state. Based on density-functional-theory calculations we observe that the THz-range magnon bands in RuO$_2$ have an alternating chirality splitting, similar to the alternating spin splitting of the electronic bands, and a linear magnon dispersion near the zero wavevector. We also show that, overall, the Landau damping of this metallic altermagnet is suppressed due to the spin-split electronic structure, as compared to an artificial antiferromagnetic phase of the same RuO$_2$ crystal with spin-degenerate electronic bands and chirality-degenerate magnon bands., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

Axion insulators are generally understood as magnetic topological insulators whose Chern-Simons axion coupling term is quantized and equal to $\pi$. Inversion and time reversal, or the composition of either one with a rotation or a translation, are symmetries which protect this invariant. In this work, we focus our attention on the composition of a 2-fold rotation with time reversal, and we show that insulators with this symmetry possess a Z2 invariant arising from Atiyah's real K-theory. We call this invariant the K-theory Kane-Mele invariant due to the similarities it has with the Kane-Mele invariant for systems with time-reversal symmetry. Whenever all Chern numbers vanish, we demonstrate that this invariant is equivalent to the Chern-Simons axion coupling, and in the presence of the inversion symmetry, we show how this invariant could be obtained from the eigenvalues of the inversion operator on its fixed points in momentum space. For the general case of non-trivial Chern numbers, the Chern-Simons axion coupling term incorporates information of the K-theory Kane-Mele invariant as well as information regarding bands with non-trival Chern numbers. An explicit formula in terms of K-theory generators is presented for the Chern-Simons axion coupling term, the relation with the K-theory Kane-Mele invariant is explained, and a formula in terms of eigenvalues of the inversion operator is obtained. Using an effective Hamiltonian model and first-principles calculations, we also show that the occurrence of bulk-band inversion and nontrivial K-theory Kane-Mele invariant index can be observed in axion insulators of the pnictides family. In particular, we demonstrate that NpBi can be classified as an axion insulator due to the detection of additional topological indicators such as the quantum spin Hall effect, gapped surface states, surface quantized anomalous Hall effect, and chiral hinge modes, Comment: 16 pages, 5 figures

A new formalism for the factorization of the cross section for single hadron production in $e^+e^-$ annihilations, differential in $z_h$, $P_T$ and thrust, is applied to the phenomenological analysis of data recently measured by the BELLE Collaboration. Within this scheme the $e^+e^- \to hX$ cross section can be recast in the convolution of a perturbatively calculable coefficient and a universal transverse momentum dependent fragmentation function. Central to understanding the nonpertubative, intrinsic partonic nature of hadron structure are the concepts of transverse momentum dependent (TMD) parton distribution and fragmentation functions. A TMD factorization approach to the phenomenology of semi-inclusive processes that includes evolution, higher orders, and matching to larger transverse momentum, is ultimately necessary for reliably connecting with phenomenologically extracted nonperturbative structures, especially when widely different scales are involved. In this paper, we will address some of the difficulties that arise when phenomenological techniques that were originally designed for very high energy applications are extended to studies of hadron structures, and we will solidify the connection between standard high energy TMD implementations and the more intuitive, parton model based approaches to phenomenology that emphasize nonperturbative hadron structure. In the process, we will elaborate on differences between forward and backward TMD evolution, which in the context of this paper we call "bottom-up" and "top-down" approaches, and we will explain the advantages of a bottom-up strategy. We will also emphasize and clarify the role of the integral relations that connect TMD and collinear correlation functions. We will show explicitly how they constrain the nonperturbative "$g$-functions" of standard Collins-Soper-Sterman (CSS) implementations of TMD factorization. This paper is especially targeted toward phenomenologists and model builders who are interested in merging specific nonperturbative models and calculations (including lattice QCD) with TMD factorization at large $Q$. Band inversion is a known feature in a wide range of topological insulators characterized by a change of orbital type around a high-symmetry point close to the Fermi level. In some cases of band inversion in topological insulators, the existence of quasinodal spheres has been detected, and the change of orbital type is shown to be concentrated along these spheres in momentum space. To understand this phenomenon, we develop a local effective fourfold Hamiltonian that models the band inversion and reproduces the quasinodal sphere. This model shows that the signal of the spin Hall conductivity, as well as the change of orbital type, are both localized on the quasinodal sphere, and moreover, that these two indicators characterize the topological nature of the material. Using K-theoretical methods, we show that the change of orbital type parametrized by an odd clutching function is equivalent to the strong Fu-Kane-Mele invariant. We corroborate these results with ab initio calculations for the materials YH3 and CaTe, where in both cases the signal of the spin Hall conductivity is localized on the quasinodal spheres in momentum space. We conclude that a nontrivial spin Hall conductivity localized on the points of change of orbital type is a good indicator for topological insulation., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures

Antiferromagnetic manganese-based nitride antiperovskites, such as Mn$_3$NiN, hold a triangular frustrated magnetic ordering over their kagome lattice formed by the Mn atoms along the (111)-plane. As such, frustration imposes a non-trivial interplay between the symmetric and asymmetric magnetic interactions, which can only reach equilibrium in a noncollinear magnetic configuration. Consequently, the associated electronic interactions and their possible tuning by external constraints, such as applied epitaxial strain, play a crucial role in defining the microscopic and macroscopic properties of such topological condensed matter systems. Thus, in the present work, we explored and explained the effect of the epitaxial strain imposed within the (111)-plane, in which the magnetic and crystallographic symmetry operations are kept fixed, and only the magnitude of the ionic and electronic interactions are tuned. We found a linear shifting in the energy of the band structure and a linear increase/decrease of the available states near the Fermi level with the applied strain. Concretely, the compression strain reduces the Mn-Mn distances in the (111) kagome plane but linearly increases the separation between the stacked kagome lattices and the available states near the Fermi level. Despite the linear controlling of the available states across the Fermi energy, the anomalous Hall conductivity shows a non-linear behavior where the $\sigma_{111}$ conductivity nearly vanishes for tensile strain. On the other hand, $\sigma_{111}$ fetches a maximum increase of 26\% about the unstrained structure for a compression value close to $-$1.5\%.This behavior found an explanation in the non-divergent Berry curvature within the kagome plane, which is increased for constraining but significantly reduced for expansion strain values...

The Ca~II H \& K lines are among the few features available to infer the metallicity of extremely metal-poor stars from medium-resolution spectroscopy. Unfortunately, these lines can overlap with absorption produced in the intervening interstellar medium, introducing systematic errors in the derived metallicities. The strength of the Ca~II infrared triplet lines can also be measured at extremely low metallicities, and it is not affected by interstellar absorption, but suffers significant departures from Local Thermodynamical Equilibrium (LTE). We investigate the feasibility of adopting the Ca~II infrared triplet as a metallicity indicator in extremely metal-poor stars using state-of-the art Non-LTE models including the most recent atomic data. We find that the triplet lines exhibit Non-LTE abundance corrections that can exceed 0.5\,dex. When interstellar absorption affecting the Ca~II resonance lines is accounted for using high-resolution observations, the agreement between Non-LTE abundances for the triplet and those for the resonance lines, with only minor departures from LTE, is excellent. Non-LTE effects strengthen the Ca~II IR triplet lines, facilitating measurements at very low metallicities, compared with LTE estimates, down to $\rm [Fe/H]=-6.0$. This result has important implications for the discovery of primitive stars in our Galaxy and others, since instruments are most sensitive at red/near-infrared wavelengths, and tens of millions of spectra covering the Ca~II IR triplet will soon become available from the Gaia, DESI, WEAVE, and PFS missions., Comment: 11 pages, 3 figures

Using high-resolution optical spectroscopy we determine the chemical abundance of the secondary star in the binary millisecond pulsar PSR J1023+0038. We measure a metallicity of [Fe/H] = 0.48 +/- 0.04 which is higher than the Solar value and in general find that the element abundances are different compared to the secondary stars in X-ray binaries and stars in the solar neighbourhood of similar Fe content. Our results suggest that the pulsar was formed in a supernova explosion. We find that supernova models, where matter that has been processed in the supernova is captured by the secondary star leading to abundance anomalies, qualitatively agree with the observations. We measure Li abundance of A(Li) = 3.66 +/- 0.20, which is anomalously high compared to the Li abundance of stars with the same effective temperature, irrespective of the age of the system. Furthermore, the Li abundance in PSR J1023+0038 is higher than the Cosmic value and what is observed in young Population I stars and so provides unambiguous evidence for fresh Li production. The most likely explanation is the interaction of high energy gamma-rays or relativistic protons from the pulsar wind or intrabinary shock with the CNO nuclei in the secondary star's atmosphere via spallation which leads to substantial Li enrichment in the secondary star's atmosphere., Comment: Accepted for publication in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society. 19 pages, 12 figures

The anomalous Hall effect, commonly observed in metallic magnets, has been established to originate from the time-reversal symmetry breaking by an internal macroscopic magnetization in ferromagnets or by a non-collinear magnetic order. Here we observe a spontaneous anomalous Hall signal in the absence of an external magnetic field in an epitaxial film of MnTe, which is a semiconductor with a collinear antiparallel magnetic ordering of Mn moments and a vanishing net magnetization. The anomalous Hall effect arises from an unconventional phase with strong time-reversal symmetry breaking and alternating spin polarization in real-space crystal structure and momentum-space electronic structure. Factorizing the cross section for single hadron production in $e^+e^-$ annihilations, differential in $z_h$, $P_T$ and thrust, is a highly non trivial task. We have devised a factorization scheme that allows us to recast the $e^+e^- \to hX$ cross section in the convolution of a perturbatively calculable coefficient and a universal Transverse Momentum Dependent (TMD) Fragmentation Function (FF). The predictions obtained from our NLO-NLL perturbative computation, together with a simple ansatz to model the non-perturbative part of the TMD, are applied to the experimental measurements of the BELLE Collaboration for the phenomenological extraction of this process independent TMD FF., Comment: To appear in the Proceedings of the XXVIII International Workshop on Deep-Inelastic Scattering and Related Subjects (DIS2021)

The Bayesian reweighting procedure is applied for the first time to a TMD distribution, the quark Sivers function extracted from SIDIS data. By exploiting the recent published single spin asymmetry data for the inclusive jet production in $p^\uparrow p$ collisions from the STAR collaboration at RHIC, we show how such a procedure allows to incorporate the information contained in the new data set, without the need of re-fitting, and to explore a much wider $x$ region compared to SIDIS measurements. A well-established result in condensed matter physics states that materials crystallizing in symmetry groups containing glide reflection symmetries possess nodal lines on the energy bands. These nodal lines are topologically protected and appear on the fixed planes of the reflection in reciprocal space. In the presence of inversion symmetry, the energy bands are degenerate and the nodal lines on the fixed plane may hybridize or may cross. In the former case, the crossing is avoided, thus producing lines on reciprocal space where the energy gap is small, and in the latter, the nodal lines will endure, thus producing Dirac or double nodal lines. In addition, if the material crystallizes in a ferromagnetic phase where the glide reflection symmetry is broken, the nodal lines hybridize, thus defining lines in reciprocal space where the energy gap is small. In this work we concentrate our efforts on the study of nodal lines that hybridize due to magnetization; we have coined the term of quasi-nodal lines for those lines in reciprocal space where the energy gap is small (less than what can be detected experimentally). We study magnetic trifluorides and trioxides which crystallize in magnetic space groups 167.107 and 161.71 and we show the existence of quasi-nodal lines on these materials. We furthermore show that whenever the quasi-nodal lines are located around the Fermi level then interesting charge and spin transport effects are induced and can be used to detect experimentally these lines. Of particular interest are the half-metallic ferromagnetic phases of PdF3 and LiCuF3 where the large signal of the anomalous Hall conductance is due to the presence of the quasi-nodal lines on the Fermi level., Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures

The Cholesky factorization of the moment matrix is applied to discrete orthogonal polynomials on the homogeneous lattice. In particular, semiclassical discrete orthogonal polynomials, which are built in terms of a discrete Pearson equation, are studied. The Laguerre-Freud structure semi-infinite matrix that models the shifts by $\pm 1$ in the independent variable of the set of orthogonal polynomials is introduced. In the semiclassical case it is proven that this Laguerre-Freud matrix is banded. From the well known fact that moments of the semiclassical weights are logarithmic derivatives of generalized hypergeometric functions, it is shown how the contiguous relations for these hypergeometric functions translate as symmetries for the corresponding moment matrix. It is found that the 3D Nijhoff-Capel discrete Toda lattice describes the corresponding contiguous shifts for the squared norms of the orthogonal polynomials. The continuous Toda for these semiclassical discrete orthogonal polynomials is discussed and the compatibility equations are derived. It also shown that the Kadomtesev-Petvishvilii equation is connected to an adequate deformed semiclassical discrete weight, but in this case the deformation do not satisfy a Pearson equation.

It is commonly believed that in typical collinear antiferromagnets, with no net magnetization, the energy bands are spin-(Kramers-degenerate. The opposite case is usually associated with a global time-reversal symmetry breaking (e.g., via ferro(i)magnetism), or with the spin-orbit interaction is combined with the broken spatial inversion symmetry. Recently, another type of spin splitting was demonstrated to emerge in some fully compensated by symmetry, nonrelativistic, collinear magnets, and not even necessarily non-centrosymmetric. These materials feature non-zero spin density staggered not only in real, but also in momentum space. This duality results in a combination of characteristics typical of ferro- and antiferromagnets. Here we discuss this novel concept in application to a well-known semiconductor, FeSb2, and predict that upon certain alloying it becomes magnetic, and features such magnetic duality. The calculated energy bands split antisymmetrically with respect to spin degenerate nodal surfaces (and not nodal points, as in the case of spin-orbit splitting. This combination of a large (0.2 eV) spin splitting, compensated net magnetization and metallic ground-state, and a particular magnetic easy axis generate a large anomalous Hall conductivity (~150 S/cm) and a sizable magneto-optical Kerr effect, all deemed to be hallmarks of nonzero net magnetization. We identify a large contribution to the anomalous response originating from the spin-orbit interaction gapped anti-Kramers nodal surfaces, a mechanism distinct from the nodal lines and Weyl {\it points} in ferromagnets., Comment: minor corrections to the references list

Giant or tunneling magnetoresistance are physical phenomena used for reading information in commercial spintronic devices. The effects rely on a conserved spin current passing between a reference and a sensing ferromagnetic electrode in a multilayer structure. Recently, we have proposed that these fundamental spintronic effects can be realized in collinear antiferromagnets with staggered spin-momentum exchange interaction, which generates conserved spin currents in the absence of a net equilibrium magnetization. Here we elaborate on the proposal by presenting archetype model mechanisms for the antiferromagnetic giant and tunneling magnetoresistance effects. The models are based, respectively, on anisotropic and valley-dependent forms of the non-relativistic staggered spin-momentum interaction. Using first principles calculations we link these model mechanisms to real antiferromagnetic materials and predict a $\sim$100\% scale for the effects. Advancing the utility of social media data for research applications requires methods for automatically detecting demographic information about social media study populations, including users' age. The objective of this study was to develop and evaluate a method that automatically identifies the exact age of users based on self-reports in their tweets. Our end-to-end automatic natural language processing (NLP) pipeline, ReportAGE, includes query patterns to retrieve tweets that potentially mention an age, a classifier to distinguish retrieved tweets that self-report the user's exact age ("age" tweets) and those that do not ("no age" tweets), and rule-based extraction to identify the age. To develop and evaluate ReportAGE, we manually annotated 11,000 tweets that matched the query patterns. Based on 1000 tweets that were annotated by all five annotators, inter-annotator agreement (Fleiss' kappa) was 0.80 for distinguishing "age" and "no age" tweets, and 0.95 for identifying the exact age among the "age" tweets on which the annotators agreed. A deep neural network classifier, based on a RoBERTa-Large pretrained model, achieved the highest F1-score of 0.914 (precision = 0.905, recall = 0.942) for the "age" class. When the age extraction was evaluated using the classifier's predictions, it achieved an F1-score of 0.855 (precision = 0.805, recall = 0.914) for the "age" class. When it was evaluated directly on the held-out test set, it achieved an F1-score of 0.931 (precision = 0.873, recall = 0.998) for the "age" class. We deployed ReportAGE on more than 1.2 billion tweets posted by 245,927 users, and predicted ages for 132,637 (54%) of them. Scaling the detection of exact age to this large number of users can advance the utility of social media data for research applications that do not align with the predefined age groupings of extant binary or multi-class classification approaches.

Objective: After years of research, Twitter posts are now recognized as an important source of patient-generated data, providing unique insights into population health. A fundamental step to incorporating Twitter data in pharmacoepidemiological research is to automatically recognize medication mentions in tweets. Given that lexical searches for medication names may fail due to misspellings or ambiguity with common words, we propose a more advanced method to recognize them. Methods: We present Kusuri, an Ensemble Learning classifier, able to identify tweets mentioning drug products and dietary supplements. Kusuri ("medication" in Japanese) is composed of two modules. First, four different classifiers (lexicon-based, spelling-variant-based, pattern-based and one based on a weakly-trained neural network) are applied in parallel to discover tweets potentially containing medication names. Second, an ensemble of deep neural networks encoding morphological, semantical and long-range dependencies of important words in the tweets discovered is used to make the final decision. Results: On a balanced (50-50) corpus of 15,005 tweets, Kusuri demonstrated performances close to human annotators with 93.7% F1-score, the best score achieved thus far on this corpus. On a corpus made of all tweets posted by 113 Twitter users (98,959 tweets, with only 0.26% mentioning medications), Kusuri obtained 76.3% F1-score. There is not a prior drug extraction system that compares running on such an extremely unbalanced dataset. Screw rotations in nonsymmorphic space group symmetries induce the presence of hourglass and accordion shape band structures along screw invariant lines whenever spin-orbit coupling is nonnegligible. These structures induce topological enforced Weyl points on the band intersections. In this work we show that the chirality of each Weyl point is related to the representations of the cyclic group on the bands that form the intersection. To achieve this, we calculate the Picard group of isomorphism classes of complex line bundles over the 2-dimensional sphere with cyclic group action, and we show how the chirality (Chern number) relates to the eigenvalues of the rotation action on the rotation invariant points. Then we write an explicit Hamiltonian endowed with a cyclic action whose eigenfunctions restricted to a sphere realize the equivariant line bundles described before. As a consequence of this relation, we determine the chiralities of the nodal points appearing on the hourglass and accordion shape structures on screw invariant lines of the nonsymmorphic materials PI3 (SG: P63), Pd3N (SG: P6322), AgF3 (SG: P6122) and AuF3 (SG: P6122), and we corroborate these results with the Berry curvature and symmetry eigenvalues calculations for the electronic wavefunction., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures

Time-reversal (T) symmetry breaking is a fundamental physics concept underpinning a broad science and technology area, including topological magnets, axion physics, dissipationless Hall currents, or spintronic memories. A best known conventional model of macroscopic T-symmetry breaking is a ferromagnetic order of itinerant Bloch electrons with an isotropic spin interaction in momentum space. Anisotropic electron interactions, on the other hand, have been a domain of correlated quantum phases, such as the T-invariant nematics or unconventional superconductors. Here we report discovery of a broken-T phase of itinerant Bloch electrons with an unconventional anisotropic spin-momentum interaction, whose staggered nature leads to the formation of two ferromagnetic-like valleys in the momentum space with opposite spin splittings. We describe qualitatively the effect by deriving a non-relativistic single-particle Hamiltonian model. Next, we identify the unconventional staggered spin-momentum interaction by first-principles electronic structure calculations in a four-sublattice antiferromagnet Mn5Si3 with a collinear checkerboard magnetic order. We show that the staggered spin-momentum interaction is set by nonrelativistic spin-symmetries which were previously omitted in relativistic physics classifications of spin interactions and topological quasiparticles. Our measurements of a spontaneous Hall effect in epilayers of antiferromagnetic Mn5Si3 with vanishing magnetization are consistent with our theory predictions. Bloch electrons with the unconventional staggered spin interaction, compatible with abundant low atomic-number materials, strong spin-coherence, and collinear antiferromagnetic order open unparalleled possibilities for realizing T-symmetry broken spin and topological quantum phases., Comment: 26 pages, 4 figures

This paper describes polarimetric strategies based on measuring the light's geometric phase, which results from the evolution of the polarisation state while traversing an optical system. The system in question is described by a homogeneous Jones matrix, which by definition, contains mutually perpendicular eigenpolarisations. Our leading theory links the system's Jones matrix parameters (eigenvalues and eigenvectors) with the input polarisation state and the geometric phase. We demonstrate two interferometric techniques. The first one measures the geometric phase based on the relative lateral fringe displacement between the interference pattern of two mutually-orthogonal polarisation states. The second technique uses the visibility of the interference fringes to determine the eigenpolarisations of the system. A web application with real-time emotion recognition for psychologists and psychiatrists is presented. Mental health effects during COVID-19 quarantine need to be handled because society is being emotionally impacted. The human micro-expressions can describe genuine emotions that can be captured by Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) models. But the challenge is to implement it under the poor performance of a part of society computers and the low speed of internet connection, i.e., improve the computational efficiency and reduce the data transfer. To validate the computational efficiency premise, we compare CNN architectures results, collecting the floating-point operations per second (FLOPS), the Number of Parameters (NP) and accuracy from the MobileNet, PeleeNet, Extended Deep Neural Network (EDNN), Inception- Based Deep Neural Network (IDNN) and our proposed Residual mobile-based Network model (ResmoNet). Also, we compare the trained models results in terms of Main Memory Utilization (MMU) and Response Time to complete the Emotion (RTE) recognition. Besides, we design a data transfer that includes the raw data of emotions and the basic patient information. The web application was evaluated with the System Usability Scale (SUS) and a utility questionnaire by psychologists and psychiatrists. ResmoNet model generated the most reduced NP, FLOPS, and MMU results, only EDNN overcomes ResmoNet in 0.01sec in RTE. The optimizations to our model impacted the accuracy, therefore IDNN and EDNN are 0.02 and 0.05 more accurate than our model respectively. Using topological band theory analysis we show that the nonsymmorphic symmetry operations in hexagonal lattices enforce Weyl points at the screw-invariant high-symmetry lines of the band structure. The corepresentation theory and connectivity group theory show that Weyl points are generated by band crossings in accordion-like and hourglass-like dispersion relations. These Weyl points are stable against weak perturbations and are protected by the screw rotation symmetry. Based on first-principles calculations we found a complete agreement between the topological predicted energy dispersion relations and real hexagonal materials. Topological charge (chirality) and Berry curvature calculations show the simultaneous formation of Weyl points and nodal-lines in 4d transition-metal trifluorides such as AgF3 and AuF3. Furthermore, a large intrinsic spin-Hall conductivity was found due to the combined strong spin-orbit coupling and multiple Weyl-point crossings in the electronic structure. Time-reversal symmetry breaking is the basic physics concept underpinning many magnetic topological phenomena such as the anomalous Hall effect (AHE) and its quantized variant. The AHE has been primarily accompanied by a ferromagnetic dipole moment, which hinders the topological quantum states and limits data density in memory devices, or by a delicate noncollinear magnetic order with strong spin decoherence, both limiting their applicability. A potential breakthrough is the recent theoretical prediction of the AHE arising from collinear antiferromagnetism in an anisotropic crystal environment. This new mechanism does not require magnetic dipolar or noncollinear fields. However, it has not been experimentally observed to date. Here we demonstrate this unconventional mechanism by measuring the AHE in an epilayer of a rutile collinear antiferromagnet RuO$_2$. The observed anomalous Hall conductivity is large, exceeding 300 S/cm, and is in agreement with the Berry phase topological transport contribution. Electrical spin-current generation is among the core phenomena driving the field of spintronics. Using {\em ab initio} calculations we show that a room-temperature metallic collinear antiferromagnet RuO$_2$ allows for highly efficient spin-current generation, arising from anisotropically-split bands with conserved up and down spins along the N\'eel vector axis. The zero net moment antiferromagnet acts as an electrical spin-splitter with a 34$^\circ$ propagation angle between spin-up and spin-down currents. Correspondingly, the spin-conductivity is a factor of three larger than the record value from a survey of 20,000 non-magnetic spin-Hall materials. The electronic anomalous Hall effect (AHE), where charge carriers acquire a velocity component orthogonal to an applied electric field, is one of the most fundamental and widely studied phenomena in physics. There are several different AHE mechanisms known, and material examples are highly sought after, however in the highly conductive (skew scattering) regime the focus has centered around ferromagnetic metals. Here we report the observation of a giant extrinsic AHE in KV$_3$Sb$_5$, an exfoliable, Dirac semimetal with a Kagome layer of Vanadium atoms. Although there has been no reports of magnetic ordering down to 0.25 K, the anomalous Hall conductivity (AHC) reaches $\approx$ 15,507 $\Omega^{-1}$cm$^{-1}$ with an anomalous Hall ratio (AHR) of $\approx$ 1.8$ \%$; an order of magnitude larger than Fe. Defying expectations from skew scattering theory, KV$_3$Sb$_5$ shows an enhanced skew scattering effect that scales quadratically, not linearly, with the longitudinal conductivity ($\sigma_{xx}$), opening the possibility of reaching an anomalous Hall angle (AHA) of 90$^{\circ}$ in metals; an effect thought reserved for quantum anomalous Hall insulators. This observation raises fundamental questions about the AHE and opens a new frontier for AHE (and correspondingly SHE) exploration, stimulating investigation in a new direction of materials, including metallic geometrically frustrated magnets, spin-liquid candidates, and cluster magnets.

A chemo-dynamical analysis of 115 metal-poor candidate stars selected from the narrow-band Pristine photometric survey is presented based on CFHT high-resolution ESPaDoNS spectroscopy. We have discover 28 new bright (V < 15) stars with [Fe/H]<-2.5 and 5 with [Fe/H]<-3.0 for success rates of 40% (28/70) and 19% (5/27), respectively. A detailed model atmospheres analysis is carried out for the 28 new metal-poor stars. Stellar parameters were determined from SDSS photometric colours, Gaia DR2 parallaxes, MESA/MIST stellar isochrones, and the initial Pristine survey metallicities, following a Bayesian inference method. Chemical abundances are determined for 10 elements (Na, Mg, Ca, Sc, Ti, Cr, Fe, Ni, Y, Ba). Most stars show chemical abundance patterns that are similar to the normal metal-poor stars in the Galactic halo; however, we also report the discoveries of a new r-process rich star, a new CEMP-s candidate with [Y/Ba]>0, and a metal-poor star with very low [Mg/Fe]. The kinematics and orbits for all of the highly probable metal-poor candidates are determined by combining our precision radial velocities with Gaia DR2 proper motions. Some stars show unusual kinematics for their chemistries, including planar orbits, unbound orbits, and highly elliptical orbits that plunge deeply into the Galactic bulge (Rperi < 0.5 kpc); also, eight stars have orbital energies and actions consistent with the Gaia-Enceladus accretion event. With the increasing use of social media data for health-related research, the credibility of the information from this source has been questioned as the posts may originate from automated accounts or "bots". While automatic bot detection approaches have been proposed, there are none that have been evaluated on users posting health-related information. In this paper, we extend an existing bot detection system and customize it for health-related research. Using a dataset of Twitter users, we first show that the system, which was designed for political bot detection, underperforms when applied to health-related Twitter users. We then incorporate additional features and a statistical machine learning classifier to significantly improve bot detection performance. Our approach obtains F_1 scores of 0.7 for the "bot" class, representing improvements of 0.339. Our approach is customizable and generalizable for bot detection in other health-related social media cohorts.
