In a time of unparalleled disruption, rapid change, and increasing uncertainty, never has the need for leadership and leadership development been more apparent. Although VA does not require employees to use the development plan form, doing so supports formalizing their desire for development opportunities and assists them in having focused development conversations with their supervisors. For each role in the framework, stated is the case for developing the individual and the benefit to both the organization and employee upon which leaders at all levels of the organization may rely. ABSTRACT: Cottonseed products have been used as a feed supplement for ruminant livestock and white‐tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus). Gossypol, a secondary plant metabolite found in cotton (Gossypium spp.), is known to be toxic to a variety of animals, specifically monogastric mammals and birds. However, there are no published data regarding the effects of gossypol in northern bobwhites (Colinus virginianus). Our goal was to determine whether ingestion of gossypol presents a threat to northern bobwhite survival and reproduction. We performed this study at Tarleton State University Northern Bobwhite Research Center (Stephenville, TX, USA) during March and April 2016, using the Environmental Protection Agency's 850.2100 Guideline: Avian Acute Oral Toxicity Test. We administered one‐time doses of refined gossypol to northern bobwhites at 20 mg/kg, 200 mg/kg, 262 mg/kg, 342 mg/kg, 447 mg/kg, 585 mg/kg, 765 mg/kg, and 1,000 mg/kg body weight (BW) and observed them daily throughout a 14‐day period. We measured feed consumption daily and body mass weekly. Birds receiving larger doses (447–1,000 mg/kg BW) consumed less total feed postdosing (55.46 ± 56.46 g, n = 39) and had greater, negative postdosing percent change in mass (−23.02 ± 13.04%, n = 85) compared with control birds and those receiving lower doses (20–342 mg/kg BW). We also examined laying performance and egg quality of birds dosed with 20 mg/kg and 200 mg/kg BW (n = 30 pairs) and the growth rate and percent mortality of second‐generation young produced from these pairs. There was no difference in laying performance, egg quality, the percentage of chicks that hatched, and the growth rate and percent mortality of chicks between the dosing rates. Our results suggest that gossypol can have adverse effects on feed consumption and body mass in northern bobwhites at sufficient doses; however, a one‐time acute dose of gossypol up to 200 mg/kg BW does not pose any negative reproductive effects. © 2018 The Wildlife Society. ABSTRACT: The Wildlife Society's (TWS) strategic plan for 2014–2019 intends to improve member services, organizational integration, and sustainability of the Society. To inform these efforts, we invited 12,681 TWS members to participate in an online survey covering demographics and perceptions of member services and benefits in 2014. Compared with a previous TWS member survey completed in 1991, member demographics have shifted: females comprise a greater proportion of the membership (32% in 2014; 19% in 1991), a smaller proportion of members are actively involved at any level of TWS (41%; 52%), and the median age of members has increased slightly from 39 to 44. A smaller proportion of current members supported expansion of the certification program (28%) as compared with member responses in 1991 (51%). Support for TWS becoming an accrediting agency for university wildlife programs declined from 79% to 50%. A greater proportion of current members (54%) opposed using TWS certification requirements as hiring guidelines for wildlife biologists, compared with 38% of members in 1991. In 2014, most TWS members viewed access to TWS publications and networking opportunities with other professionals as valuable membership benefits; however, lack of time or resources for involvement and lack of encouragement from employers were perceived as the main barriers to TWS participation. Although often an integral part of a member's professional career, our results suggest that members are less active in the Society and hold weaker positive attitudes toward the role of TWS in their career as it relates to certification, formal education, and employment compared with 1991. © 2018 The Wildlife Society. Early Ordovician collision of the Lough Nafooey Arc (part of the Baie Verte Oceanic Tract) with the passive continental margin of Laurentia peaked at c. 475 Ma in Scotland and Ireland and was followed by subduction polarity reversal. We examined Upper Ordovician–Silurian sedimentary rocks from western Ireland to see whether collision was followed by renewed arc magmatism. Despite the scarcity of dated igneous intrusions between the Grampian (c. 470 Ma) and Acadian (c. 420 Ma) orogenies in Ireland, detrital zircons show a continuity of activity peaking at 480–440 Ma, implying no hiatus in regional magmatism. Differences in zircon U–Pb age spectra highlight the isolation of basins in the southern Killary Harbour area from those north of the South Mayo Trough. These latter rocks were largely derived by erosion from Moine and Upper Dalradian sources. By contrast, the Killary Harbour Basin shows a decreasing influence from the Dalradian after c. 436 Ma and an increasing influence of contemporaneous magmatic zircons. These were transported from sources along-strike from the present NE, probably at the southern end of the Scandian Mountains in SE Greenland. The western Irish basins formed as pull-apart basins in a forearc setting and are analogous to Cenozoic pull-apart basins in Sumatra. Drought is an important abiotic stress that iimits common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) productivity. The objective of this study was to determine shoot traits that are associated with drought tolerance in common bean seediings. Ten common bean genotypes consisting mainly of cultivars and breeding lines from the Mesoamerican race of the Middle American gene pool were first evaluated in the greenhouse. Genotypes were grown in a shaiiow soil profile to limit root growth and assess shoot phenotypes under stress. Water stress was imposed by withholding watering for 24 days after planting. Traits evaluated included wilting, unifoliate senescence, stem greenness, and recovery from drought. Biomass and number of pods/plant produced after drought recovery were evaluated to quantify the effect of early drought stress on bean growth and reproduction. A second group of 94 common bean genotypes from the Bean Coordinated Agricultural Project (BeanCAP) were evaluated using the same protocol to determine the genetic variability for the same traits in a wider range of genotypes. In general, genotypes known to possess drought avoidance in the field conferred by deep rooting traits performed poorly in these conditions suggesting that the assay could be used to identify seedling shoot traits that contribute to drought tolerance. Genotypes from race Mesoamerica showed the greatest range in wilting. Genotypes that showed a slow rate of wilting maintained a green stem and had a higher recovery rate after watering. Importantly, these genotypes demonstrated a smaller reduction in biomass and pod number under stress compared with non-stress treatments. A few genotypes recovered completely despite expressing severe wilting, whereas the majority of genotypes with high wilting rates did not recover. Among the BeanCAP materials, genotypes bred in the rainfed midwestern United States showed overall better recovery than those bred under the irrigated production system used in the western United States. Because recovery from drought is a prerequisite to plant regrovvth, biomass, and pod production after drought stress, factors that contribute to recovery were studied. Stem greenness was highly positively correlated to the recovery, whereas wilting was negatively correlated to the recovery. In a regression analysis, stem greenness and slow wilting were found to be important contributors to the variability of recovery. In addition, photosynthetic rate and stomatal conductance (gs) explained variation in wilting and stem greenness. These results suggest that wilting and stem greenness might be useful traits to screen for drought tolerance in seedlings of common bean. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article looks at the uncertainty of the overdraft fee litigation in the U.S. in 2011 following the mortgage meltdown and financial crisis. The method employed by financial institutions to post debit transactions and the overdraft fees resulting from the deal was challenged in class action lawsuits filed since 2008. Some institutions have opted to settle such lawsuits due to the risks, costs, exposure and uncertainty of litigation. They are also expected to offer overdraft protection.
