Purpose: Theoretical generalisation provides the basis for tackling problems of service complexity, fragmentation and disrupted care pathways. Design/methodology/approach: Recent mental health service transformation in Wales, United Kingdom, has been stimulated by a policy programme underpinned by person-centred recovery values. This paper offers analysis informed by the perspectives of Niklas Luhmann and other noted theorists to examine escalating service system complexity related to this transformation. Analysis builds upon the findings of a qualitative study employing thematic discourse analysis of talk of people with mental illness and associated workers. Findings: In total, three themes were constructed in participants' talk: "Competing versions of recovery", "Misaligned service expectations" and "Disrupted care pathways." Recovery may be understood as a form of moral communication and autopoietic meaning-making activity, according to Luhmann's radical constructionist epistemology. This has the potential to generate competing versions of recovery, a key contributor to escalating complexity. Research limitations/implications: Findings could be developed further by continued investigation of the relationship between recovery implementation and service fragmentation. Social implications: A more judicious, balanced policy-implementation may cultivate optimal conditions for recovery pluralism by avoiding polarisation towards either top-down, policy-based recovery implementation or a proliferation of approaches at the grassroots level. Findings have implications for healthcare settings beyond the scope of mental healthcare, given the prevalence of person-centred care internationally. Originality/value: A simplistic view of recovery implementation should be challenged. Recovery should not be considered a "magic bullet" for mental healthcare delivery. Extensive multi-criterion sorting (MCS) methods have been developed to address problems encountered in real-world scenarios. Nevertheless, these methods did not take into account the reliability of the information given by experts, and neglected the preferences of decision-makers when calculating the comprehensive performances of alternatives. To overcome these limitations, this paper proposes a double normalization-based multiple aggregation sorting method with Z-numbers (Z-DNMASort), which can depict both the reliability and uncertainty of any available information. The method considers both quantitative and qualitative criteria in forms of benefit, cost or target types in the sorting process, and also considers the reliability of information given by experts. Furthermore, this method takes into account three aggregation techniques to reflect the preferences of decision-makers when calculating the comprehensive performances of alternatives. A case study regarding battery electric vehicle (BEV) evaluation is given to validate the proposed method. Starting from the data and current models for the study of the language from the economic perspective -language economics-, this paper aims to show how the economic value of the Spanish language is perceived in the media and how news about it contribute to construct an imaginary that legitimates the value of language. To this end, a corpus consisting of texts from the Spanish periodical press between the years 2001 and 2017 is analyzed. The quantitative analysis shows the discontinuity/permanence of the discourse over time and its linkage with the media. The qualitative analysis reveals the three features that identify this type of discourse: the insistence on quantification, the enhancement of the symbolic value of language and the repetition and thematic exhaustion. The article analyzes the rhetoric of third-year female students of Chechen State University related to the online recruitment of women into extremist organizations. The author analyzes the attitudes of the young women, the levels of their fear/anxiety about online recruitment, and documents the main discourses and rhetoric regarding female departures to Syria and Iraq. Focus groups showed that the rhetoric of unreasonableness is the dominant way that female departures to the Middle East are perceived. "Weak" and "easily manipulatable", women who are "crushed by housework and domestic violence" are contrasted to "experienced and smart" manipulators-recruiters who pull them into terrorist networks. Given that the problem of radicalization in Chechnya remains acute, the author advocates for greater contributions from gender psychologists and discourse analysis professionals to research the phenomenon of female online recruitment in the North Caucasus context. But the controversial context, in which this type of discourse is inserted, usually affects the attenuating value of certain elements, becoming them an intensifying resource of acts social effects. It is an exhortative act whose aims an issue with repercussions on the community good. In this paper, a tensor product (TP) model transformation-based variable universe of discourse (VUD) controller is presented for a class of under-actuated nonlinear systems. First, the under-actuated nonlinear system is transformed into a parameter-varying weighted polytopic system by TP model transformation. Next, the VUD approach is extended to the TP model case; in this model, the gains of the error and error derivative in the VUD are calculated by linear matrix inequalities rather than traditional linear methods, such as the linear quadratic regulator or the Lyapunov equation. The TP model transformation-based VUD (TPVUD) is augmented with a σ -adaptive strategy to improve the controller׳s performance. To demonstrate the advantages of the developed control method, numerical simulations are carried out on a parallel-type double inverted pendulum and an aeroelastic wing system. This article approaches Responsibility to Protect (R2P) from the ground up. Selecting African cases of mass atrocity in the age of R2P, it identifies key general features of contemporary violence. The article goes on to consider the nature and extent of R2P practice in each case. The argument is that R2P engagements in these conflicts display a mixture of weakness and irrelevance. The result of this is that R2P has failed significantly to reduce human suffering in any of the cases dealt with. The article notes that this clear failure does not seem to perturb the mainstream of academic R2P discourses, which, although critical at times, remain confident that R2P is making some difference and represents the best way forward. The article explores how this kind of discourse is propounded in the scholarly work on R2P. This leads us towards an argument that R2P as a discourse and international project can run in parallel with continuing mass suffering in African civil wars without being profoundly troubled. Although objectivity should prevail in the news, sometimes, this principle is violated by different methods or resources to modalize one message. In this work, the ultimate goal is to find out if one of these resources may be the use of verbal humor and, if so, how and why it is used. To this end, it has created a corpus of 248 texts from various media and different ideologies from 2007 until today in order to make it as representative as possible. And, by personal observation and the instrument that facilitates the General Theory of Verbal Humor, we analyzed all that corpus. The result concludes that, although its use is not massive, the verbal humor is used as modalizador element for different purposes, and different linguistic resources used to achieve it. Segmenting the oral speech into its constituent elements is a prior step to functional analysis, so it is necessary to propose descriptive models able to explain how that segmentation can be done with guarantees; however, schemes arising from the sentence syntax are not typically useful for analyzing large portion of spoken utterances. As we have proposed in some previous works, the internal division of these set into smaller units largely depends on the capacity of the prosodic component (intonation, in the strictest sense) to establish boundaries in some cases and, in others, to build hierarchical relationships between internal constituents of such statements. To that end, this article proposes several explanatory principles of prosodic character and the usefulness of these principles is proposed to segment the oral speech, from an empirical pilot study as a basis for developing future research in the same direction. In order to achieve this goal, its origin, its meaning, its relationships with other markers and its main uses will be taken into account. In the examples analysed, it will be observed that, with a ver, through a metaphorical process, the experience of a physical perception ("perception through the eyes") is transferred to a mental experience ("checking", "knowing"), a linguistic action is expressed -the exhortation-, the discourse is organised, and interactional values related to the speaker's subjectivity are developed (negative appraisal, uncertainty, etc.). The present work is an attempt to evaluate the importance of the study of linguistic attitudes as an analysis mechanism to explain the functioning of some discourse particles. The assumption should be that it exists an important link between language as a system and speakers' use of language. In fact, we speak choosing between the different elements we have in order to meet the needs in communication. In this selection process, we usually leave an imprint in language about our attitude to the enunciation. This link provides certain attitudes that can be systematized in the description of discourse particles.
