In this paper, the aeroelastic characteristic and active control of one-dimensional acoustic black hole structures in supersonic airflow are analyzed. Utilizing Hamilton's principle, the equation of motion of the one-dimensional acoustic black hole (ABH) structures in supersonic airflow with attached piezoelectric elements is established. The first-order piston theory is used to simulate the aerodynamic pressure of the composites, and the controller is designed based on speed feedback and proportional feedback algorithms. Through numerical simulations, the variation of the natural frequency concerning the aerodynamic pressure is carried out studies to determine the flutter point of the system. Besides, the influences of piezoelectric actuators and sensors on the aeroelastic flutters of one-dimensional ABH structures are analyzed. A high-voltage, 16 channel driver with a maximum voltage of 72 volt and 14 bit resolution in a high-voltage CMOS (HV-CMOS) process is presented. This design incorporates a 14 bit monotonic by design DAC together with a high-voltage complementary class AB output stage for each channel. All 16 channels are used for driving a piezoelectric actuator within the control loop of a micropositioning system. Since the output voltages are static most of the time, a class AB amplifier is used, implementing voltage feedback to achieve 14 bit accuracy. The output driver consists of a push-pull stage with a built-in output current limitation and high-impedance mode. Also a protection circuit is added which limits the internal current when the output voltage saturates against the high-voltage rail. The 14 bit resolution of each channel is generated with a segmented resistor string DAC which assures monotonic by design behavior by using leapfrogging of the buffers used between segments. A diagonal shuffle layout is used for the resistor strings leading to cancellation of first order process gradients. The dense integration of 16 channels with high peak currents results in crosstalk, countered in this design by using staggered switching and resampling of the output voltages. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Negative imaginary (NI) systems play an important role in the robust control of highly resonant flexible structures. In this paper, a generalized NI system framework is presented. A new NI system definition is given, which allows for flexible structure systems with colocated force actuators and position sensors, and with free body motion. This definition extends the existing definitions of NI systems. Also, necessary and sufficient conditions are provided for the stability of positive feedback control systems where the plant is NI according to the new definition and the controller is strictly negative imaginary. Furthermore, the stability conditions given are independent of the plant and controller system order. As an application of these results, a case study involving the control of a flexible robotic arm with a piezo-electric actuator and sensor is presented. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

The scope of the present work is to elucidate the reverberations of propagating guided waves through delaminated regions confined in composite plate structures. As it is well known, delamination between consequent plies is the most common type of damage in composite structures. A mean of investigation of delamination cracks is through guided wave propagation. It has been observed that either type of guided waves (antisymmetric or symmetric) has different repercussions inside and outside the delaminated area. Inside this work is used a well-established numerical tool developed by the authors. By making good use of its reported numerical capabilities, the authors used the Hermitian Cubic Splined Layerwise mechanics to incorporate the delamination and the physical presence of piezoelectric actuators. The two mentioned aspects were then integrated into a time domain spectral finite element. The outcome was the development of a multinode explicit layerwise finite element, able of modelling the physical presence of active piezoelectric sensors, the existence of delamination cracks through the thickness and the excitation of each fundamental wave mode separately (A 0 & S 0). The calculated semi-diagonal mass matrix, due to the collocation of the nodes with the grid points of Gauss–Lobatto–Legendre quadrature, boosts the speed of numerical time integration, while the use of high order polynomials as shape functions, conduce to a vast reduction of the mesh size, enabling the thorough investigation and simulation of high frequency wave propagation. • Current study simulates wave propagation through delamination in composites plates. • Electromechanical TDSFE numerical tool with delamination DOFs, opening and sliding. • Propagated antisymmetric wave splits into two slower antisymmetric waves at damage. • Propagated 1st symmetric mode converts into antisymmetric at the delamination area. • Conclusions for Antisymmetric Wave propagation are experimentally validated.
