This paper will focus on the citation analysis of graduate masters theses from Carleton University's Biology Department with implications for library collection management decisions. Twenty-five masters theses were studied to determine citation types and percentages, ranking of journals by frequency of citation and by number of authors citing, and by age range of journal citations. The researcher examined what percentages of journals were accessible through the local catalogue and conducted further analysis of specifics regarding unavailability. Journals were also ranked by subject specialty. Results indicate that although the library has many of the journal articles cited, knowing why a citation was unavailable is useful for establishing future purchasing needs. Although journal rankings are traditionally performed using total number of citations, the ranking by number of authors citing a source can make a difference when compiling core journal lists. She explains that at the Calcasieu Parish Public Library, such service roles have traditionally been managed by Technical Services, Circulation and Reference. This article reprints a paper about building library collections presented at the Seventh Fiesole Collection Development Retreat in Melbourne, Australia on April 28-30, 2005. Libraries go back centuries, but the ambitious library, focused on and open to a broad community of users, is, for the most part, a very modern concept. The antecedents of the Yale Library--troves owned and operated by scholars of extraordinary learning and brilliance--were brought home to me recently. We have just finished cataloging and converting bibliographical records for one of these unique old enclaves, the Yale Babylonian Collection (YBC), numbering some 10,000 items, as large as the whole of Yale Library was until late in the nineteenth century. Throughout this project, a joint venture between our library and the distinguished faculty curator of the YBC, we heard stories about the old days when faculty and graduate students would drop their own work and go on book hunts through the warren of YBC rooms, in order to find a book for a visiting scholar who needed a particular item. Now outsourcing is increasingly common, as academic booksellers, and not just in western countries, provide additional services such as online catalog copy or shelf-ready books upon delivery. Were our libraries to reclaim the selection, acquisitions and cataloging work that has been entrusted to our commercial colleagues, our staff costs would surely at least double.

Various normalization techniques to transform journal impact factors (JIFs) into a standard scale or range of values have been reported a number of times in the literature, but have seldom been part of collection development librarians' tool kits. In this paper, JIFs as reported in the Journal Citation Reports (JCR) database are converted to percentiles (0%-100%) using Microsoft Excel's PERCENTRANK function. This permits a more intuitive evaluation of journal ranking within JCR subject categories and broader disciplines. The top journal by impact factor in any category is set to 100% while the lowest impact factor journal is set to 0% with all other journals on the list scaled according to their rank. Percentile-based impact factors (PIFs) also allow valid cross-disciplinary comparisons of impact factors, something not possible using JIFs. Finally, since a given journal title is often assigned to multiple subject categories, the relative impact of the same journal title can be compared and evaluated across each of those categories. Photographs of Josef Muench have been donated to the Northern Arizona University Cline Library in Flagstaff. David Bender has donated his papers to the Case Western Reserve University's Kelvin Smith Library. His papers will prove to be a valuable resource for scholars examining the developments in information science over the last four decades and the implications for future directions.
