Discourses of striving for equality versus the preservation of Jewish difference are reflected in the Jewish and non-Jewish struggles for an appropriate remembrance of the fallen during and after the First World War. They find their expression in the spatial localization of Jewish war memory. This paper deals with the polyphonic memory discourses and spatial positions of Jewish war memory in interplay with non-Jewish war memory in Austria during the Second World War. A recent report from Sigmund Freud University Vienna discusses the need for more research on the effectiveness of psychotherapy under real-world conditions in Austria. Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate the potential of making the systems approach fertile for the future of our world(s). Design/methodology/approach – Underpinned by a significant case study, the idea of the paper is to show how a systems study changed the basis for deciding on an incisive interference planned for a lovely alpine valley. The study builds on a qualitative conceptual model and reverts to a quantitative, system-dynamics simulation model, as well as standard economic evaluation methods. The decision process is explained with its outcomes and implications. Findings – The study found, among others, the following concrete result: The optimal variant (Case B) required an additional investment for its realization. According to the calculations that were carried out, the period needed for the amortization of the pertinent amount was found to be no more than 0.9 to 1.6 years. It became clear that the most expensive variant was indeed a very good business proposition for the Austrian Republic. Practical implications – The results of the study were integrated into the General Traffic Plan of the Austrian Ministry of Transportation, Innovation and Technology, i.e. the study's conclusions obtained legal status. This meant a shift toward a long-term orientation. In addition, new insights for the realization of similar studies and interventions were gained. Originality/value – The study described in the paper shows both rigor and relevance. It illuminates a methodology that combines the qualitative and the quantitative, as well as careful analysis and powerful synthesis. The article reports on a family of refugees from Czechoslovakia who arrived in the U.S. zone of Austria buried deep within a load of lumber. Members of the family include baker Bedrich Cech, his son, daughter-in-law and two small grandchildren. Details of the preparations made by the family for their trip are given, including drugging the children and lining the traveling space with tar paper. The family plans to go to Earlham, Iowa where Cech's daughter is staying.

The period of transition from the dynastically composed, multi-ethnic Habsburg monarchy to theRepublic of German-Austria/Austriawas marked by fundamental economic crises, social tensions, and traumas as a consequence of the harrowing experiences of the war. This situation led to extensive social and political radicalization, including a massive rise in anti-Semitism. The paper focuses on the reasons for this increase in anti-Semitism and describes the rhetoric of the politicians during the war and in the immediate post-war period. Based on the stenographic protocols of the meetings in the Austrian Imperial Assembly and the (Provisional) National Assembly, the politicians who used anti-Semitic speeches in order to achieve particular goals are identified and examples of how the situation and rights of the Austrian Jewish population was discussed in parliament are given. The objective of this study is to provide reliable nowcasting (up to six hours) to short-range wind speed forecasts of up to 40 hours ahead in 10 meters height for meteorological observation sites (i.e., point forecasting). The proposed method is a data-driven approach combining artificial neural networks, ensemble learning, and feature selection techniques. Particularly, we improve a pre-defined baseline setup using meteorological features, pre-classification by forecasting intervals, as well as spatial and temporal related data. This combination of methods is the so-called ZiANN (ZAMG interval artificial neural network) and it is optimized for both nowcasting and short-range forecasts. The developed method is one of the first machine learning based wind speed forecasts for the Austrian domain and Austrian observation sites. Heterogenous data sources are combined to derive training data for ZiANN. In particular, we consider (1) observations from weather stations and (2) output of one or several numerical weather prediction models. For (1), we use data from the TAWES network in Austria, while for (2), we use the AROME, ALARO, and/or ECMWF-IFS model interpolated for the observation site location. The model is validated by two test episodes and selected sites in Austria. Forecasts are compared to alternative methods: a random forest approach, the persistence, the currently operational nowcasting system INCA, the model output statistic META, and the NWP model AROME. Our results show that ZiANN outperforms alternative models, especially in the nowcasting-range. The article narrates how the Russians have kidnapped 800 people from Austria since 1945 for crimes of espionage and sabotage. Russia released its first official announcement on the missing Austrians during the third week of September 1951 after insistent demands from the Austrian government. Its statement concerned only two men, namely railway officer Paul Katscher whom they reported to have been accused of sabotage and died in a Soviet jail, and senior police inspector Anton Marek. The Russians did not report on the others who remain missing.

Red fox (Vulpes vulpes) is the most abundant wild canid species in Austria, and it is a well-known carrier of many pathogens of medical and veterinary concern. The main aim of the present study was to investigate the occurrence and diversity of protozoan, bacterial and filarial parasites transmitted by blood-feeding arthropods in a red fox population in western Austria. Blood (n = 351) and spleen (n = 506) samples from foxes were examined by PCR and sequencing and the following pathogens were identified: Babesia canis, Babesia cf. microti (syn. Theileria annae), Hepatozoon canis, Anaplasma phagocytophilum, Candidatus Neoehrlichia sp. and Bartonella rochalimae. Blood was shown to be more suitable for detection of Babesia cf. microti, whilst the spleen tissue was better for detection of H. canis than blood. Moreover, extremely low genetic variability of H. canis and its relatively low prevalence rate observed in this study may suggest that the parasite has only recently been introduced in the sampled area. Furthermore, the data presented here demonstrates, for the first time, the possible vertical transmission of H. canis from an infected vixen to the offspring, and this could explain the very high prevalence in areas considered free of its main tick vector(s).
