Abstract

The article reports on Italian dictator Benito Mussolini's decree that the words Tyrol, South Tyrol and Tyrolese be removed from the Italian language. The region of Tyrol was ceded to Italy by Austria under the Treaty of Saint Germain in 1919. The majority of Tyrol's population is described as mainly Austrian and that the results of a plebiscite showed most of the male voters wanted a return to Austria.
