Addressing cross-cutting issues such as climate change, urbanization, andenvironmental degradation in policy and planning is key for transitioning toa sustainable society. In the work of societal and transport systemdevelopment, the integration of environmental and sustainabilityperspectives has never been more crucial. In urban areas, the interconnection between transport and land use is evident, and integrated transport and land use planning plays an important role in promotingsustainable transport systems. However, both the integration ofenvironmental and sustainability considerations in transport planning and the integration of land use and transport planning are complex challenges.This thesis explores the consideration of environmental aspects andsustainability perspectives in strategic transport planning, with a focus onthe Swedish Strategic Choice of Measures (SCM) approach and lessonslearnt from planning approaches in the Nordic countries. The thesis is primarily based on case studies of SCM processes in the Stockholm region. Empirical material has been collected through observations of SCMs involving public officials from the Swedish Transport Administration,municipalities in Stockholm Region, and Stockholm's public transportauthority, as well as through semi-structured interviews, focus groupinterviews, informal interviews and document studies, with a qualitative research approach.The thesis is a compilation of four scientific papers. Drawing on examples from the Nordic countries, this article aims to explore the practical application of strategic policy and planning instruments and approaches that facilitate the integration of land use and transport planning and promote sustainable policy measures through collaboration among stakeholders across various governance levels. This research applies a qualitative research design including literature research, interviews, and workshops involving practitioners from the five Nordic countries. In this paper, we present an overview of the planning structure in the Nordic countries, including institutions that govern land use and transport planning. We identify different approaches to bridge the gap between land use and transport planning, such as the Finger Plan in Denmark, MAL in Finland, Concept Studies in Norway, and Strategic Choice of Measures in Sweden. Many of the examples employ informal collaborative approaches among authorities to form a shared vision and seek consensus on a combination of policy measures and actions. Projektet är ett gestaltningsförslag som handlar om Kymlinge övergivna tunnelbanestation som ligger på blå linjens Akallagren i norra Stockholm. Tunnelbanestationen byggdes och förbereddes på 1970-talet för en planerad men inte byggd stadsdel, och öppnades sedan ald- rig. Att området senare blev naturreservat gjorde saken ännu svårare och stationen ligger än idag övergiven, cirka femtio år efter bygget och har idag börjat likna en modern ruin. Sam- tidigt har konkurrensen om ytorna i staden hårdnat och grönområdena har blivit allt färre i takt med urbaniseringens framfart. Tillgängligheten till natur, grönstruktur och friluftsliv har minskat, inte minst på grund av fragmenteringen av landskapet till följd av ny infra- struktur, som skapat barriärer som utgör både fysiska och psykiska hinder. Dessa barriärer är troligtvis en av anledningarna till att även den upplevda tillgången till stadens naturom- råden sjunkit. Det här projektet utgår från möjligheten att öppna stationen för besökare till naturområdet. Det blir ett sätt att ge fler av stadens människor tillgång till naturreservatet i form av en ny entré centralt beläget i området, men också att skapa en ny form av upplevelse i staden vars tunnelbanestationer idag nästan uteslutande omgärdas av centrum präglade av arbete, bostad och/eller kommers. Projektet handlar om hur man kan omgestalta statio- nen till att fylla denna nya funktion som "entré till naturen", samtidigt som dess identitet som modern ruin bevaras. Med hjälp av analyser, platsbesök, litteraturstudier, skisser och gestaltande har projektet lett fram till ett gemensamt gestaltningsförslag av en entré till naturreservatet och en station på blå linjen, som ämnar bevara karaktären av den övergivna stationen och samtidigt berätta dess historia., The project is a design proposal that deals with the abandoned Kymlinge subway station, located on the blue line towards Akalla, in northern Stockholm. The subway station was built and prepared for in the 1970’s for a planned, but not yet constructed district, which was never realised. The fact that the area later became a nature reserve made matters even more difficult and the station is still today left abandoned, around fifty years after the construction and has begun to resemble a modern ruin. Meanwhile, the competition of space in the city has intensified as green areas have become fewer in line with the progress of urbanisation. Accessibility to nature, green structure and outdoor life has decreased, not least due to the fragmentation of the landscape as a result of new infrastructure, which has created barriers that constitute both physical and psychological obstacles. These barriers are probably one of the reasons why the perceived access to the city’s natural areas also has diminished. This project is based on the possibility of opening the station for visitors to the nature area. It will be a way to give more people of the city access to the nature reserve in the form of a new entrance, centrally located in the area, but also to create a new form of experience in the city, where subway stations today are almost exclusively surrounded by the center, characterized by work, housing and/or commerce. The project focuses on how to transfigure the station to fulfill this new function as ”entrance to nature”, while preser- ving its identity as a modern ruin. With the help of analyses, site visits, literature studies, sketches and design, the project has led to a joint design proposal for an entrance to the nature reserve and a station on the blue line, which intends to preserve the character of the abandoned station while also telling its history.

In 2013, the Strategic Choice of Measure (SCM) process was introduced by the STA to facilitate collaboration among multiple societal actors in the early stages of transport planning. In the SCM process many of the choices are made that will affect the development of the transport system as well as the future transport system's impact on the environment. Integrating environmental aspects at an early planning stage, such as in the SCM process, can help reduce and avoid the environmental impact of the transport system. Therefore, this licentiate thesis aims to explore the consideration of environmental aspects in the SCM process (Paper 1), and to analyze the SCM process from a systems perspective in order to illuminate the consequences of system boundaries on how environmental aspects are considered and what aspects are included or left out (Paper 2). Rapid changes in the global climate and declining biodiversity pronounces the need for adapting the transport system and transport infrastructure, which influence several sustainability issues and cause direct environmental impact through their use of land, as well as indirect impacts, for example, emissions of pollutants to air and water. Population ageing and shrinking are demographic phenomena with far-reaching implications for sustainability in the current context of extensive and rapid urbanization. This Perspective rationalizes their interface by (a) identifying the challenges and opportunities that ageing and shrinking urban populations will have for implementing the sustainable development goals (SDGs), and (b) discussing some emerging interventions to capitalise on the opportunities and reduce the challenges to achieving sustainability. The Strategic Choice of Measures (SCM) approach aims to integrate different perspectives and identify measures to adapt new infrastructure projects to their local context at an early stage of Swedish transport planning. SCM is a loosely structured framework for collaboration between actors from, e.g., municipalities and the Swedish Transport Administration, in order to facilitate the coordination of transport planning and land use planning. This paper aims to explore the consideration of environmental aspects in early-stage transport planning by analyzing the SCM approach. An explorative research approach is applied based on literature studies, semi-structured interviews, and a focus group interview. The result shows that in the SCM process, environmental aspects such as noise and air pollution generated by road traffic in urban areas, engage the actors, whereas aspects related to landscape and water were perceived as poorly addressed and received less attention. The consideration of environmental aspects in the SCM process is affected by the local and national authorities' different interests and the competences involved. The effects of aggregating soil data (DAE) by areal majority of soil mapping units was explored for regional simulations with the soil-vegetation model CoupModel for a region in Germany (North Rhine-Westphalia). DAE were analysed for wheat yield, drainage, soil carbon mineralisation and nitrogen leaching below the root zone. DAE were higher for soil C mineralization and N leaching than for yield and drainage and were strongly related to the presence of specific soils within the study region. These soil types were associated to extreme simulated output variables compared to the mean variable in the region. The spatial aggregation of these key functional soils within sub-regions additionally influenced the DAE. A spatial analysis of their spatial pattern (i.e. their presence/absence, coverage and aggregation) can help in defining the appropriate grid resolution that would minimize the error caused by aggregating soil input data in regional simulations., QC 20180122

To what extent might a crop with increased plant N uptake efficiency and/or N demand increase plant biomass and soil carbon storage, decrease N leaching, and reduce the need for N fertilisation? This was assessed for a fertilised sandy loam site in central Sweden cultivated with spring barley for a four year period using a process based crop and soil simulation model (SOILN) calibrated to fit observations of field experiments with non-modified crops. Crop properties were changed in accordance with previous model applications to other crops with higher N uptake and utilisation efficiencies, to resemble potential effects of breeding. For the modified crops a doubling of daily uptake efficiency of soil mineral N and/or increase of radiation use efficiency by 30%, increased plant biomass by 3%-30%, decreased N leaching by 1%-30% and increased soil organic carbon (SOC) content by 1-12 g C m-2 year-1. The larger changes were mainly due to increased uptake efficiency. Fertilisation of the modified spring barley crop could be reduced while still producing the same plant biomass as the non-modified crop. The plant biomass to N leaching ratio of the modified crops increased. The simulated changes in plant biomass and SOC were sensitive to weather conditions suggesting that in situ experiments would need to cover a large range of weather conditions to evaluate the performance of new crop traits under climatic variability. Europe accounts for around 20% of the global cereal production and is a net exporter of ca. 15% of that production. Increasing global demand for cereals justifies questions as to where and by how much Europe's production can be increased to meet future global market demands, and how much additional nitrogen (N) crops would require. The latter is important as environmental concern and legislation are equally important as production aims in Europe. Here, we used a country-by-country, bottom-up approach to establish statistical estimates of actual grain yield, and compare these to modelled estimates of potential yields for either irrigated or rainfed conditions. In this way, we identified the yield gaps and the opportunities for increased cereal production for wheat, barley and maize, which represent 90% of the cereals grown in Europe. The combined mean annual yield gap of wheat, barley, maize was 239 Mt, or 42% of the yield potential. The national yield gaps ranged between 10 and 70%, with small gaps in many north-western European countries, and large gaps in eastern and south-western Europe. Yield gaps for rainfed and irrigated maize were consistently lower than those of wheat and barley. If the yield gaps of maize, wheat and barley would be reduced from 42% to 20% of potential yields, this would increase annual cereal production by 128 Mt (39%). Potential for higher cereal production exists predominantly in Eastern Europe, and half of Europe's potential increase is located in Ukraine, Romania and Poland. Unlocking the identified potential for production growth requires a substantial increase of the crop N uptake of 4.8 Mt. Across Europe, the average N uptake gaps, to achieve 80% of the yield potential, were 87, 77 and 43 kg N ha−1 for wheat, barley and maize, respectively. For spatial crop and agro-systems modelling, there is often a discrepancy between the scale of measured driving data and the target resolution. Spatial data aggregation is often necessary, which can introduce additional uncertainty into the simulation results. Previous studies have shown that climate data aggregation has little effect on simulation of phenological stages, but effects on net primary production (NPP) might still be expected through changing the length of the growing season and the period of grain filling. This study investigates the impact of spatial climate data aggregation on NPP simulation results, applying eleven different models for the same study region (∼34,000 km2), situated in Western Germany. To isolate effects of climate, soil data and management were assumed to be constant over the entire study area and over the entire study period of 29 years. Two crops, winter wheat and silage maize, were tested as monocultures. Compared to the impact of climate data aggregation on yield, the effect on NPP is in a similar range, but is slightly lower, with only small impacts on averages over the entire simulation period and study region. Maximum differences between the five scales in the range of 1–100 km grid cells show changes of 0.4–7.8% and 0.0–4.8% for wheat and maize, respectively, whereas the simulated potential NPP averages of the models show a wide range (1.9–4.2 g C m−2 d−1 and 2.7–6.1 g C m−2 d−1 for wheat and maize, respectively). The impact of the spatial aggregation was also tested for shorter time periods, to see if impacts over shorter periods attenuate over longer periods. The potential of modified spring barley crops with improved nitrogen (N) use efficiency to reduce nitrogen (N) leaching and to increase soil organic carbon (SOC) storage was assessed at the regional scale. This was done using simulation model applications designed for reporting according to the Helcom (Helsinki Commission) and Kyoto protocols. Using model simulations based on modified crops N dynamics and SOC were assessed for three agro-ecological regions (latitudes ranging 55°20′–60°40′ N) in Sweden over a 20-year period. The modified N use properties of spring barley were implemented in the SOILNDB model (simulating soil C, N, water and heat, and plant N dynamics) by changing the parameters for root N uptake efficiency and plant N demand within a range given by previous model applications to different crops. A doubling of the daily N uptake efficiency and increased N demand (by ca 30%) reduced N leaching by 24%–31%, increased plant N content by 9%–12%, depending on region. The effects of the modified crop on SOC was simulated with the ICBM model, resulting in an increased SOC content (0–25 cm depth) by 57–79 kg C ha−1 y−1. The results suggest that a modified crop might reduce N leaching from spring barley area, in a range similar to the targets of relevant environmental protection directives, a result which held more in the northern than southern regions. The simulated SOC increase on a hectare basis was highest for the central region and least for the most northern region. Global warming increases average temperature, which in turn enhances atmospheric water holding capacity. These changes are believed to increase the frequency and/or intensity of extreme precipitation events. In determining the design storm, or a worst probable storm, for infrastructure design and failure risk assessment, experts commonly assume that statistics of extreme precipitation do not change significantly over time. This so- called notion of stationarity assumes that the statistics of future extreme precipitation events will be similar to those of historical observations. This study investigates the consequences of using a stationary assumption as well as the alternative: a non-stationary framework that con- siders temporal changes in statistics of extremes. Here we evaluate stationary and non-stationary return levels for 10-year to 50-year extreme precipitation events for different durations (1-day, 2-day, ..., 7-day precipitation events), based on the observed daily precipitation from Sweden. Non-stationary frequency analysis is only considered for stations with statistically significant trends over the past 50 years at 95% confidence (i.e., 15 to 39 % out of 139 stations, depend- ing on duration, 1-day, 2-day, ..., 7-day). We estimate non-stationary return levels using the General Extreme Value distribution with time-dependent parameters, inferred using a Bayesian approach. The estimated return levels are then compared in terms of duration, recurrence in- terval and location. The results indicate that a stationary assumption might, when a significant trend exists, underestimate extreme precipitation return levels by up to 40 % in Sweden. This report highlights the importance of considering better methods for estimating the recurrence in- terval of extreme events in a changing climate. Europe is, after Asia, the second largest producer of wheat in the world, and provides the largest share of barley. Wheat (and to a similar extent, barley) production in Europe increased by more than 6-fold during the 20th century. During the first half of the 20th century, this was driven by expanding the harvested area. This was followed, from the mid-20th century, by a massive increase in productivity that in many regions has stalled since 2000. However, it remains unclear what role climatic factors have played in these changes. Understanding the net impact of climatic trends over the past century would also aid in our understanding of the potential impact of future climate changes and in assessments of the potential for adaptation across Europe. In this study, we compiled information from several sources on winter wheat and spring barley yields and climatological data from 12 countries/regions covering the period from 1901-2012. The studied area includes the majority of climatic regions in which wheat and barley are grown (from central Italy to Finland). We hypothesized that changes in climatic conditions have led to measurable shifts in climate-yield relationships over the past 112 yr, and that presently grown wheat and barley show a more pronounced response to adverse weather conditions compared to crops from the early 20th century. The results confirm that climate-yield relationships have changed significantly over the period studied, and that in some regions, different predictors have had a greater effect on yields in recent times (between 1991 and 2012) than in previous decades. It is likely that changes in the climate-yield relationship at the local level might be more pronounced than those across the relatively large regions used in this study, as the latter represents aggregations of yields from various agroclimatic and pedoclimatic conditions that may show opposing trends.

Vad är syftet med denna Riskanalys? Svensk spannmåls- och mjölkproduktion beror på många faktorer av vilka flera är så kallade biofysiska, dvs i allt väsentligt är de av naturvetenskaplig karaktär (t ex väder, sjukdomar mm). En del förändringar i dessa förutsättningar utgör hot. Vår studie avser att identifiera några av dessa hot och utvärdera, utifrån vetenskapligt testade metodiker, sannolikheten för att de orsakar en skada på produktionen. Weather is one of the key factors controlling crop growth and development. To support decision making, it is essential to know how often extreme weather events have affected crop production and the weather indices that cause them. We used long-term experiment data at four locations in Sweden to evaluate the effects of extreme weather on four major cereal crops: winter wheat, spring wheat, barley and oats. Yield reductions during 1965-2010 differed between crops and locations; with greater variation for spring cereals than winter wheat. For about 2-8 years and 1-2 years, out of the 45 years, yield reductions were 30% and 50%, respectively. For these years the total precipitation during early growth and/or harvest time deviated more than 30% from normal more often, than for years with yield reductions less than 30% (or higher yields). However, such deviations in precipitation were common for the whole 46 year period, and using these weather indices as single predictors of yield reductions would fail in the majority of years.

Detta är en lösningsorienterad uppsats som har grundat sig på huruvida alternativa dragningar av stigar för olika besökskategorier kan göras för att skapa harmoni mellan grupperna och intressena utan att skada värdefull natur och med så små naturskador som möjligt. Jag har gett ett förslag till var de nya stigarna ska gå för att minimera de konflikter och konfliktsträckor som finns i området mellan olika besöksgrupper. Övergripande behandlas även vilken skada MTB-cykling och ridning gör på marken och trädets rötter. Miljön förändras av sig själv naturligt och all aktivitet påverkar naturen i någon grad. Förvaltning handlar inte bara om att bevara och utveckla utan också att hindra oönskade förändringar. Syftet med Järavallens strövområde är att erbjuda en rik och intressant naturupplevelse för dem som besöker området. Med rätt kunskap och ett klokt agerande går det att minska konflikter både mellan nyttjare av olika slag och mellan nyttjare och natur. Den forskning som jag har hittat inom området kommer från Australien, Kanada och Nordamerika. Djupare studier gällande svenska förhållanden har inte publicerats. Detta ser jag som en betydande brist, då Sverige har unika naturförhållanden och även vår allemansrätt att förhålla oss till. Dessutom finns det mer forskning på hur vandring påverkar natur och mark än vad ridning och mountainbikecykling gör. Det är även brist på forskning som tar upp skillnader på omfattningen vid markskada beroende på vilka gångarter hästarna rids i, likaså markskadan som mountainbikecykling kan åstadkomma. Forskning kring eventuella konflikter mellan de olika nyttjarna och vilka konsekvenser det blir för friluftsutövarna är mycket begränsad.

Male reproductive function is impaired during end-stage renal disease (ESRD). Disturbance of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis, and therefore the regulation of sex hormones, is one of the major causes. Our focus was to include antimüllerian hormone (AMH) and inhibin B concentrations. Twenty male patients on hemodialysis, median age 40 (26-48) years, were analyzed for follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone (LH), prolactin, sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG), testosterone, estradiol, AMH and inhibin B levels. We used 144 proven fertile men, median age 32 (19-44) years as a control group and analyzed differences using multiple linear regression. Males with ESRD demonstrated higher mean values for prolactin, 742 versus normal 210 mIE l-1 (95% confidence interval (CI): 60.3, 729), LH, 8.87 versus normal 4.5 IE l-1 (95% CI: 2.75, 6.14), and estradiol 89.7 versus normal 79.0 pmol l-1 (95% CI: -1.31, -0.15). Mean value for AMH was lower, 19.5 versus normal 47.3 pmol l-1 (95% CI: -37.6, -11.6). There were no differences found for FSH, SHBG, inhibin B and testosterone. The most important difference was found for AMH, a marker of Sertoli cell function in the testes, which decreased by close to 60% when compared with controls. Combined with an increase in LH, these findings may indicate a dysfunction of Sertoli cells and an effect on Leydig cells contributing to a potential mechanism of reproductive dysfunction in men with ESRD.

I examensarbetet har vi i sju steg undersökt vad det innebär att genom gestaltning tillgängliggöra en naturupplevelse där skogen i Tyresta nationalpark och naturreservat fått agera exempel. Undersökningens första steg börjar med att vi uppmärksammar en trend; att med hjälp av arkitektur tillgängliggöra naturen med syftet att denna ska framstå som attraktiv, samt anpassas efter den urbana människans rekreativa önskemål. Arkitekturen fungerar här som en slags länk mellan människan och naturen, vi frågade oss om denna hjälpande hand bidrar till att vi interagerar med naturen i en större utsträckning eller om den snarare gör att distansen mellan oss och naturen ökar. Undersökningen inleds i steg 1 med en redogörelse för våra erfarenheter från en studieresa till det norska projektet Nasjonale Turistveger, ett projekt vi ansåg vara representativt för den trend vi ville fördjupa oss i. Under resan bildade vi oss med hjälp av analysverkyg en uppfattning om att naturupplevelsen ofta blev lidande när naturen gestaltats. De projekt vi besökte skapade i olika utsträckning en känsla av distans mellan oss och omgivande natur. Vi menar att denna distans till stor del berodde på att platsens utformning ofta tvingade oss att betrakta naturen istället för att interagera med den. Vi hävdar här att en interaktion med naturen är avgörande för ett lyckat tillgängliggörande av natur. I steg 2 presenterar vi en inventering och analys av Tyresta nationalpark och naturreservat, där vi fokuserar på att redogöra för vilka förutsättningar naturupplevelsen i skogen beror av. Upplevelsen i skogen består för de flesta människor av att förflytta sig till fots. Då skogen är svårorienterad möjliggörs en förflyttning genom markerade leder och slingor men samtidigt gör dessa hjälpmedel besökaren passiv, de hindrar därmed en interaktion. För att själva genom gestaltning kunna undersöka tillgängliggörandet av natur formulerar vi i steg 3 fyra stycken olika gestaltningsprogram, dessa speglar fyra olika tä, In this thesis, we have studied, in seven steps, what it means to make the experience of nature accessible to all through design, using as a location, the Tyresta National Park and Nature Reserve. The first step of this paper was an investigation of an observed trend in the field of landscape architecture: the use of architecture to make nature accessible, as to be seen as attractive, rather than obstructive, thus adapted to the urban human’s recreational needs. In this case, architecture can be seen as a kind of link between man and nature and this prompted us to ask ourselves whether this is helping us to interact with nature or if it increases the distance between nature and us. The first step of our investigation began with an interpretation of our experiences from a field trip to the Norwegian project Nasjonale Turistveger, a project that we considered to be representative of the trend we observed previously. During the journey, we observed that an experience of nature suffered when imposed upon by design; the projects we visited created, in varying degrees, a sense of distance between the surrounding natural environment and ourselves. We have concluded that this distance was largely due to that the design of each site prompted us to view nature rather than interacte within it. We argue here that the interaction with nature is crucial for the success of making a designed experience of nature accessible. We present an inventory and analysis of the conditions upon which the experience of nature depends, using Tyresta National Park as our example, in the second phase of our investigation. For a large majority of people, the experience of the forest consists of moving on foot. Due to the fact that the forest is difficult to navigate in this fashion, marked looping trails make transportation by foot possible; this contributes, however, to a passive experience, preventing interaction with nature. Uppsatsens syfte är att uppnå en djupare förståelse för hur landskapsarkitekturen påverkas av att använda bilden som medel för kommunikation. Detta uppnås genom att i en litteraturstudie undersöks de konsekvenser som följer då landskapsarkitektur kommuniceras med hjälp av bilder. Litteraturstudien har visat att landskapsarkitekten är verksam i en värld som är uppbyggd av representationer. Ända från det att vi får ett uppdrag till att det är färdigställt så kommunicerar, diskuterar och arbetar vi oss fram med hjälp av representationer. Representationer är att betrakta som tolkningar och utelämnar därmed alltid information, men de hjälper oss också att förstå komplexa sammanhang. Landskapsarkitekturen rymmer subjektiva och objektiva värden, de subjektiva värdena är de vi har svårt att sätta ord på medan de objektiva för oss är lättare att kommunicera. Bilden är bra på att förmedla de objektiva värdena men mindre bra på att förmedla subjektiva värden. Att använda bilden som kommunikationsmedel i den utsträckning vi gör idag begränsar landskapsarkitekturen då vi riskerar att i vårt arbete enbart fokusera på de värden som bilden förmår visa., Today, landscape architects communicate their ideas mostly with images. To communicate with images is imprecise because the interpretation is based on personal experience. This means that the communication of landscape architecture, by the architect, is built upon personal interpretations. The purpose of this thesis is to obtain a deeper understanding of how landscape architecture is influenced by the use of images as a medium for communication. This is achieved through a review of literature to examine problems and consequences that follow when landscape architecture is communicated using images. The study has shown that landscape architects are operating in a world that is defined by representations. During the process of completing a received assignment we use representations to communicate and discuss the task. Representations can work as a tool that helps understand complex situations, but they always omit information, even though they are considered to be interpretations. Landscape architecture contains both subjective and objective values. The subjective values are those we find hard to communicate while the objective values are easier for us to communicate. The image can communicate objective values effectively but the subjective values can be more difficult. To use the image in the extent that we do today limits the possibilities for landscape architecture to progress because we tend to focus on the values that the image is able to show.
