In this paper, we present an extended evaluation of a course recommender system designed to support students who struggle in the first semesters of their studies and are at risk of dropping out. The system, which was developed in earlier work using a student-centered design and which is based on the explainable k-nearest neighbor algorithm, recommends a set of courses that have been passed by the majority of the student's nearest neighbors who have completed their studies. The present evaluation is based on the data of students from three different study programs. One result is that the recommendations do lower the dropout risk. We also discovered that while the recommended courses differed from those taken by students who dropped out, they matched quite well with courses taken by students who completed the degree program. Although the course recommender system targets primarily students at risk, students doing well could use it. Furthermore, we found that the number of recommended courses for struggling students is less than the number of courses they actually enrolled in. This suggests that the recommendations given indicate a different and hopefully feasible path through the study program for students at risk of dropping out. A strategy for allocating merit-based awards and need-based aid is critical to a university. Such a strategy, however, must address multiple, sometimes competing objectives. We introduce an approach that couples a gradient boosting classifier for predicting outcomes from an allocation strategy with a local search optimization algorithm, which optimizes strategies based on their expected outcomes. Unlike most existing approaches that focus strictly on allocating merit based awards, ours optimizes simultaneously the allocation of both merit-based awards and need-based aid. Further, the multi-objective optimization lets users experiment with different combinations of institution-centric and student-centric objectives to deliver outcomes that suit desired goals. With this approach, we identify multiple allocation strategies that would yield higher enrollment, revenue, or students' affordability and access to higher education than the University's existing strategy. In particular, one strategy suggests that with moderate changes to the current funding structure the University can increase students' access to higher education by more than 100%, while still maintaining a similar level of enrollment and revenue. These proceedings contain the papers of the 20th International Conference on e-Society (ES 2022) and 18th International Conference on Mobile Learning (ML 2022), organised by the International Association for Development of the Information Society, held virtually during 12-14 March 2022. Due to the unprecedented situation caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, this year the conferences were hosted virtually. The e-Society 2022 conference aims to address the main issues of concern within the Information Society. This conference covers both the technical as well as the non-technical aspects of the Information Society. The Mobile Learning 2022 Conference seeks to provide a forum for the presentation and discussion of mobile learning research which illustrate developments in the field. These events received 152 submissions from more than 28 countries. In addition to the papers' presentations, the conference also included one keynote presentation by Professor Pedro Isaias (Information Systems & Technology Management School, The University of New South Wales, Australia) and a Special Talk by Wilson Ramon Hernandez Parraci (Ph.D. Student, Northern Illinois University, USA). This paper complements an earlier (2019) literature review on workarounds in information systems research by including research that has influenced or been published in core IS outlets during the last five years (2018-2022). Our study captures research that strengthened, widened, and challenged theoretical insights from the previous review. It also provides additional insights and develops seven themes of theoretical insight. The 31 new papers and our updated analysis are most evident in the three themes: Workarounds and power, Temporality of workarounds, and Managing workarounds. We also found additional studies using the term 'workaround' differently to the extent that they have not applied the term to the same empirical phenomena, which questions the validity of some theoretical claims. Teaching students to conduct a rigorous systematic literature review (SLR) may be challenging, given the growing output of scientific literature and the increasing plethora of supporting software and artificial intelligence tools such as ChatGPT. A SLR supported by design science artefacts and emerging artificial intelligence tools have the potential to overcome the challenges posed by increasing scientific literature. However, guidelines and steps required to conduct a SLR still need to be clarified in the existing literature. Furthermore, existing design science artefacts and software tools do not support teaching students to conduct rigorous systematic reviews. This paper presents guidelines on the required steps for a rigorous SLR and proposes a Researchbuddie artefact to support teaching SLR. Using a systematic review and design science findings, identify SLRs four main phases of planning, conducting, evaluating and reporting reviews, each supported by itemised sub-steps. Furthermore, a design science artefact Researchbuddie is proposed to support teaching SLR. A sleep diary is an important tool to gather subjective sleep data, which provides key information for the diagnosis of a variety of sleep disorders. In 2012, an expert panel created a standardized sleep diary in penand-paper format. However, pen-and-paper has certain limitations, in particular, it is difficult to monitor participant compliance and memory bias. We improve upon these limitations with a digital design and identify benefits and drawbacks of the pen-and-paper format in comparison to a digital sleep diary in an empirical study based on an action design research project. The main contribution consists of five design guidelines: i) use the native environment, ii) utilize established input methods, iii) embed customization to minimize participant workload, iv) evaluate the application continuously using analytics, and v) integrate digital elements to increase compliance. This paper explores how to bridge the field of IS on sustainability with Sustainability Transitions Research (STR). Using a bibliometric analysis of 5 IS conference proceedings, it maps possibilities for such bridging, moving beyond the current approaches of GreenIT. Semantic content analysis of IS abstracts and keywords indicates themes characterizing GreenIT, focusing mostly on sustainability practice on the organizational level. In contrast, sustainability research (systems-level) is still uncharted territory for the IS community. Social network analysis of the authors and journals shows that collaboration and co-citation "within" the IS community are as low as the connection "without". We propose that more diffusion of IS theory and methods through Design Science may enrich current STR to be truly data-driven and theory-guided. First, the mapping suggests that IS theorizing can augment STR to be more generalizable for the digital era. Second, the thematic patterns suggest that Design Science methods and artifacts can augment the design of large-size STR studies bringing a more robust and data-driven theory-guided analysis of system innovation and transitions actor networks. Previous information system resilience studies have predominantly focused on analyzing bounce back, return to pre-shock state, resilience. This paper explores the phenomena of bounce forward information system resilience through longitudinal analysis of the COVID-19 responses in Sri Lanka and Sierra Leone. Both of these countries were able to significantly expand their information systems in terms of functionality, scale, and coordination in response to the pandemic. The goal of this paper is to derive new bounce forward attributes that were present in the information system landscapes of these countries prior to the pandemic. Through the analysis of these cases against the previously identified resilience attributes found in the literature, we defined capacity for coordinated agility, configurable and extensible innovation platform infrastructure, and human resource action potential as unique information system attributes that can constitute bounce forward outcomes when systems face shocks or are under stress. The current digitalization is a disruptive, challenging process that causes a social-technical transition in organizations. Due to that, there are more and more use cases in companies. Action research as a form of social research combines theoretical knowledge and practical execution, which is why it is suitable for current challenges. In several cycles, a literature analysis is carried out to build the knowledge base and establish hypotheses. Based on this, an action is then performed, which is subsequently analyzed, whereupon the knowledge base is expanded through literature. Since action research has not been used much in information systems so far, it is important to identify the reasons for the low use of action research in the research area of information systems. In this paper a systematic literature review was used to identify the barriers that explain the low use of action research in information systems. The findings are twelve different barriers, which are classified into three categories. The categories are "Human Factors", "Method Factors" and "Application Factors". Established in 1991, the European Journal of Information Systems (abbreviated as EJIS) is widely regarded as the preeminent international journal in the field of "information systems and management". This article's objective is to provide a bibliometric overview of the research trends that have been observed in this journal between the years 1991 and 2022 (till May). The publication data of all of the documents that were published in EJIS during this particular time period have been extracted from Scopus database and analyzed with the help of R Studio and VOSviewer. These documents primarily include articles, reviews, editorials, conference papers, and notes. In addition, citation analysis and keyword analysis have both been carried out in order to determine emerging patterns in the research. According to the study, EJIS is one of the most important journals with growing number of research publications year by year based on the analysis outcomes. However, this usefulness presupposes the existence of data with sufficient structure and quality to train machine learning models. Thus, in this study, we address the research question: How does data resourcing contribute to enabling AI opportunities? We address this question by investigating an example of data resourcing in a master’s level artificial intelligence (AI) course at UmeÃ¥ University, Sweden. This is an empirical, case-based educational setting where students engaged in data resourcing using a no-code AI platform. Our results involve provide insights regarding constructs associated with two phases of data resourcing: data work practices, and data interpretation. Collectively, these constructs provide a framework for data resourcing that is the main contribution of this paper, together with insights into the benefits of using no-code AI tools in educational settings. Our framework reveals the nature of data resourcing as a creative process where iterative algorithmic mediation, data sensemaking and contextualization enables AI opportunities. In the last decade, digital technologies are omnipresent in daily life, work and education. Internet and information technologies are changing the way we do business, communicate and educate ourselves. Pandemic of 2020 made digital technologies even more used and accelerated processes of digitalization and digital transformation. Education system is inevitable part of digital transformation process. Digital technologies in education should be used properly and efficiently. IT experts from Croatia are extremely esteemed world wide. Many innovative programming solutions of how to implement digital technologies in education are being currently developed in Croatia. Some of these solutions are being financed by Digital Europe Programme. In this paper we have analysed the state of digital transition in education, available information systems, digital resources and services in education in Croatia. For the purpose of this paper, there was a primary online poll on. The targeted population were random pupils, students and professors, all of which are part of Croatian education system. The poll was made by online questionnaire distributed via e-mail and social media. The goal of this questionnaire was to find out users' attitude towards already existing digital resources and services in education. The purpose of this research is to collect data about efficiency and way of use of already existing digital resources. Results of this research will show digital technologies advantages and disadvantages for use in education purposes. Results generated by poll were analysed by various statistic tools. AI-based social media recommendations have great potential to improve user experience. However, often these recommendations do not match the user interest and create an unpleasant experience. Moreover, the recommendation system being a black box creates comprehensibility and interpretability issues. This paper investigates social media recommendations from an end-user perspective. For the investigation purpose, we conducted a qualitative study with the users of the popular social media platform Facebook. We asked participants about social media content suggestions, comprehensibility, and explainability. Our analysis shows, users mostly require explanation whenever they encounter unfamiliar content and want to be informed about their data privacy and security. Furthermore, the users require concise, non-technical explanations along with the facility of controlled information flow. In addition, we observed that explanations impact the user's perception of transparency, trust, and understandability. Enterprise architects and IT systems developers must often decide ad hoc how to identify, assess and mitigate ethical issues of autonomous, rule-based systems based on blockchain technology. As blockchain systems are decentralized and immutable, developers must assess ethical risks, not only on an individual level but also on a network level along the life-cycle stages of a blockchain system. These ethical issues should be addressed and ideally mitigated by clearly defined norms and values that are intentionally incorporated in a blockchain system. As a reference for a normative system, we have chosen the European Union and its ethical values to discuss them in the context of ethical issues emerging from blockchain systems. IT identity plays a significant role in individuals' IT adoption and use behaviors and can impact job satisfaction. However, other individual traits, like the digital mindset, previously showed to also affect the effects of the intertwining of IT and workplaces on job satisfaction. Therefore, we examine the role of a digital mindset in shaping IT and job identity and survey 167 employees. By analyzing the relationship between these concepts, the paper contributes to a better understanding of how identities are formed and how they affect job satisfaction in the digitally-enabled workplace. Our results demonstrate that IT identity’s effect on job satisfaction is fully mediated by job identity. We also reveal that a digital mindset moderates the relationship between IT and job identities. Further, we discuss the key challenges and opportunities associated with the adoption and use of IS in organizations and provide insights into the future directions of IS research. Overall, we contribute to the ongoing discourse on the role of IT identity and digital mindset in the workplace and provide valuable insights for researchers and practitioners. As the use of technology and electronic health records is encouraged upon all formats and sizes of healthcare systems more healthcare professionals are being mandated to learn new software and tools to streamline their work. As their work becomes increasingly efficient, the demand for better performance and output increases as well. The continuous demand for improvement has resulted in increased stress levels amongst different healthcare professionals and decreased motivation in their obligations towards work. As the stress levels for healthcare professionals impacts their performance, additional consequences arise which in turn reflect upon the overall quality of healthcare services provided. According to some research on information systems in local governments in Bosnia and Herzegovina, there is an absolute dominance of proprietary software - very low prevalence of Free and open-source software (FOSS). Experiences of migration to FOSS in European Union countries show that, given the user needs and requirements, it is possible to replace part of the commercial software with appropriate FOSS software alternatives while maintaining the same level of efficiency. In this paper, we present some of benefits and risks of FOSS solutions from the technical, economic and legal side, which is important to consider when making decisions about migration. When adopting and diffusing new Information Systems (IS) people often show signs of resistance and animosity when they are required to change their behaviour caused by the introduction and implementation of new digital technology in organisational settings. However, resistance may take many forms and may vary from stakeholder to stakeholder. Further, it may be very challenging to know how to handle and cope with different types of resistance. Understanding different types of resistance and how one will meet and experience them is an extremely important part of any digital transformation in order to make the wished-for change happen. In this paper we analyse 6000 Facebook postings that revolve around a new digital healthcare platform with more than 40,000 daily users that all were required to adopt and use the new healthcare system. Blockchain research tends to focus on technical improvements and their potential for efficiency and productivity, repeatedly at the cost of comprehending the complex reciprocal interaction between social and technical aspects. One of the technical challenges for blockchain systems is scalability. Interoperability has proven effective in addressing scalability by offloading transactions via bridges, enhancing flexibility and portability for, e.g., tokens. As a result, we investigate how interoperability is organized in blockchain systems and what implications it might bring. In this research, we develop an on-ledger analytics prototype, which facilitates the examinations of NFT bridges and theorizes about the dimensions of interoperability. Practical implications reveal that hiding a token’s track in an otherwise supposedly transparent system is possible. We provide evidence that current research may only consider a subset of a token’s history among blockchain systems. Accountability is crucial to make stakeholders of Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based systems justify their actions, thereby explaining the harm such systems cause to AI users. Due to the importance of accountability in the context of AI, accountability was introduced into IS research through literature reviews. Therefore, while IS research’s understanding of accountability covers the necessary depth, it comes at the expense of its essential breadth. Using a bibliometric analysis with 19,978 English-language papers, we shed light on the essential breadth posing three W- and one H-questions (When, What, Whereof, and How). Therefore, we contribute to IS research by highlighting the urgent need to revise existing definitions of accountability in the context of AI and establish them in IS research. We argue that a missing revision leads to non-transferrable findings within IS research. In the last decade, concepts like Industry 4.0 and Digital Twins have become common practice in industries like manufacturing, bringing along many benefits like predictive maintenance and optimized operations. Similar benefits are of interest of the industries involved in built environment. Built environment Digital Twins are expected to enable smart cities and smart buildings along with multiple new value propositions from efficiency to sustainability, but the concepts and technologies don't necessarily transfer from one industry to another. Building on industry practices and theory of customer value formation, this case study of Built Environment Digital Twin aims to understand the customer and supplier value propositions and value realizations before and after Digital Twin project and to analyze reasons of value differentiation, evolution, and reprioritization. Threat actors conduct offensive cyberspace operations for many purposes, such as espionage, to destroy information assets, and cybercrime. These operations are possible thanks to the innovation and development of information and communications technologies (ICT). Interconnected information systems have transformed societies positively. However, specific states exploit these systems' vulnerabilities to advance their strategic national interests. Therefore, it is important to know how a state can organise itself to defend against threat actors. The purpose of this research is to present how the smart state Sweden can through a whole-of-society approach organise for Offensive Cyberspace Operations. The intent is to conduct an active and independent foreign-, security- and defence policy, but also as a base for deterrence and defence. This article is based on a mixed methods approach. It uses the case study research strategy to discover new information. Fourteen men and women participated in individual semi-structured interviews. The respondents ranged in age from 40 to 65 with more than 20 years of experience in cyberspace operations, intelligence operations, military operations, special forces operations, and knowledge and understanding about information warfare and information operations. The analytic strategies include thematic analysis and quantitative methods to interpret the data. The results show many themes, but the article is especially focused on the themes of Operations, Capability, Policy & Governance, and Legal Frameworks. Finally, a conceptual map of a whole-of-society approach to organise for offensive cyberspace operations is presented inferred from the themes, codes, and content, and mapped to each responsible agency based on the interviews and codes. The answer to the research question is that Sweden should have a whole-of-society approach to organise for Offensive Cyberspace Operations to project power in and through cyberspace with the intent to conduct an active and independent foreign, security and defence policy and for deterrence, as described in Figure 2. Video assistant Referee (VAR) was introduced in football (soccer) to minimize errors directly affecting the match result. As a socio-technical intervention in the sport of football to support decision-making, there is tension between real-world contexts that lack objectivity and the application of information systems to make sense of them. In this research, we set out to offer new insights for information systems research by demonstrating this fundamental but hitherto neglected tension arising from the use of technology to reason about events and execute tasks. Using an initial sample of 27 VAR errors, we demonstrate the challenge of using information systems to faithfully represent subjective events. Our initial analysis outlines emergent concepts that help to explain the incidents analyzed, which serves as the orienting framework for our findings. Despite the intense efforts to substantiate the value co-creation capability of IT service, current approaches only partially address the complex and dynamic nature of the IT value-creation process. Popular IT service frameworks such as ITIL and COBIT mainly focus on discrete customer-centric practices and processes and overlook the importance of a holistic and systematic approach to understanding value co-creation. The research follows an interpretive approach to building a framework based on a case study and grounded theory technique in a higher educational institution. The initial findings reveal the micro, meso and macro levels of value co-creation in the IT service ecosystem. This research contributes to research on value creation in the context of IT service by providing the holistic approach of the service ecosystem to value creation, which has been barely investigated. In this research essay, we have argued why philosophy makes sense to IS researchers in general and Ph.D. students in particular. We highlighted some basic concepts of philosophical ideas, the philosophy of science, and the philosophy of technology. After that, we discussed how philosophy could also be a rational sense-making or creative sense-making device in the IS theorizing process. While this essay is a kind of capsule for broad philosophical ideas, it does not replace any philosophy course or textbook. Every philosophical idea can quickly fill multiple volumes of a book. The augmentation of human capability with artificial intelligence is integral to the advancement of next generation information systems yet we have limited understanding of how organisations can translate the potential of AI into creating business value. We conducted a pilot study of direct users of AI enabled technologies to investigate the challenges and opportunities of successful implementations of humanmachine systems. Our study found that organisations have realised positive benefits from AI projects through high levels of communication, stakeholder consultation, problem management, ethics, and transparency. Significant work is required in managing staff motivation and empowerment, trust in AI technologies, and managing novel cyberthreat issues. Shortcomings in AI technology development in the areas of accuracy, reliability, trust, and human-machine interaction appear to be significant barriers to adoption and performance, as is the integrative and synchronous development of both human and technical systems. Performance outcomes may be equally dependent on how well organisation can strategically use AI to adapt, integrate and renew itself in a constantly shifting technological landscape. After many years of reluctance and lack of commitment, companies are increasingly prioritizing sustainability and setting ambitious goals. Along with the rise of organizational sustainability strategy (OSS), the role of information systems (IS) in sustainability has increased and become a source of sustainability at the organizational level. Although ever more companies consider sustainability a top priority, they struggle to turn sustainability strategies into practice and observe measurable results. We followed a mixed methods approach combining qualitative interview data (n=13) and quantitative data from a multi-continental industry survey (n=551) to generate an in-depth understanding of the role of IS-enabled sustainability practices in influencing the organizational sustainability strategy-implementation gap. With our study, we demonstrate that IS-enabled sustainability practices mediate the impact of OSS on organizational sustainability performance (OSP) and that these practices are enabled by IS capabilities that are critical to implementing sustainability practices (technology intelligence, data analysis, and digital twinning capability). The aim of this article is to explore the obstacles that are within the South African public sector, preventing information systems from operating as efficiently as they could. The significance of the research lies in the fact that the accomplishment of the objectives outlined in the South African national development plan 2030 and the medium-term strategy framework is dependent on the performance of the public sector. In the course of the research, annual and general reports from the website maintained by the Auditor General of South Africa from 2017 through 2021 were used. This study made use of the qualitative analysis software, Atlas.ti 7 which was employed to analyse textual data in annual reports. The investigation of the difficulties posed by corporate governance in the South African public sector were unveiled from themes emerging form the use of thematic analysis. The research uncovered issues with both the macro and the micro levels of corporate governance in the South African public sector. The macro concerns that were brought to light were difficulties in the structure of information systems, an economic downturn, changes in the leadership of the government, and a lack of credible information offered to people. Poor leadership accountability, inadequate information technology capabilities, poor project management, poor information management, inadequate and ineffective disaster recovery, regression in information technology governance, and delay in filling information technology vacancies were some of the micro-obstacles of corporate governance that affected information systems. According to the findings of the research, a transformational approach should be used to solve the issues by first gaining an awareness of how users view the role that information technologies play in the running of public bodies. In addition, instruments of corporate governance that relate to information systems in the public sector should be assessed to gauge their effectiveness in the South African environment. The study was conducted to West Corner Hotel, a budget-friendly hotel to improve the overall operations by utilizing information system and technology. As the management plans on implementing information strategies, the researchers proposed a website that will address the issues that had an impact to the level of customer satisfaction. The conceptualization of the contemporary paradigm of entrepreneurship is based on the functional and process approach to operations that are focused on the companies’ use of existing market opportunities. Thus, entrepreneurship is a process constituted of entrepreneurial activities of the innovator and other members of the organization. This process is characterized primarily by creative, cooperative-oriented activities, innovativeness̨, willingness̨ to take risks as well as the creation of value and benefits for the information society. In this regard, technological entrepreneurship, understood as the process of creating new high-tech products and the application of modern technologies by companies, is becoming increasingly important. The literature emphasizes that technological entrepreneurship could not have developed in modern organizations without a well-functioning information system, which is supported by an IT system. Thus, the information system becomes an important determinant of the creation and functioning of technological solutions to be used within an organization that are based on technological entrepreneurship. Nowadays, organizations face an industrial revolution, also known as Industry 4.0. Since it is a fairly recent phenomenon, many companies wonder how to embark on these digital transformation initiatives and do it successfully. Information Systems (IS), already present in the vast majority of companies, are shown to be one of the most important pillars within the digital transformation. This work aims to explore the Critical Success Factors that may contribute to a successful implementation of IS within a digital transformation initiative, based on a practical case carried out in an automotive industry company, where a digital transformation initiative was followed. The results point to the existence of some key factors for the success of IS implementation within this type of initiatives, such as: the existence of reliable connectivity between devices, the involvement of users in each phase of the systems’ development, the analysis of the existing processes, a good relationship with business partners that provide technological solutions and support them, and, also, the definition of strategic plans and roadmaps.
