The article focuses on the arrest of Harry Wu, an activist for human rights in China. Wu was arrested for speaking out against the Soviet invasion of Hungary and criticizing the Chinese Communist Party. In 1960, he was sent to the Laogai and imprisoned in twelve different forced-labor camps around the country and survived beatings, torture, as well as starvation. Wu arrived in U.S. in 1985 and began writing his experiences and document the human rights abuses of the Laogai in 1990s.
