This review contains eight papers on topics within the field of information science and technology. The papers are divided into three sections as follows: (1) Planning Information Systems and Services, including "Information Ownership and Control" (Tomas A. Lipinski); and "Pricing and Marketing Online Information Services" (Sheila Anne Elizabeth Webber); (2) Basic Techniques and Technologies, including "Design of Interfaces for Information Seeking" (Gary Marchionini and Anita Komlodi); "Sociocognitive Perspectives on Representation" (Elin K. Jacob and Debora Shaw); "Metadata" (Sherry L. Vellucci); and "Cross-Language Information Retrieval" (Douglas W. Oard and Anne R. Diekema); and (3) Applications, including "Computer Supported Cooperative Work in Information Search and Retrieval" (Michael B. Twidale and David M. Nichols) and "Electronic Scholarly Journal Publishing" (Robin P. Peek and Jeffrey P. Pomerantz). Each paper includes references. The book includes an index, as well as a cumulative keyword and author index of ARIST (Annual Review of Information Science and Technology) titles in volumes 1-33. (MES)

An evaluation of a CD-ROM multimedia component of a first grade science curriculum, the IBM/CTW "Through the Woods," is presented. The presentation offers hands-on activities related to forest ecology, such as virtual nature walks. Children participating in the study (n=95) displayed ability to use the technology, a high degree of affect to full-motion video, and mixed reactions to audio. They collaborated well without teacher assistance, but had trouble performing some individual tasks, possibly due to design flaws. Also, the children had a tendency to invent their own "mission," which suggests that there is a need to periodically reinforce the actual mission while they are using it to keep them on task. Changes that might improve the interface are proposed. (BEW)

Presents a computer software review of the graphical online interface, Ovid client for Windows. Evaluates the following system options: database choices, graphical interface, index browsing, searching, topical limiting, term mapping, displaying, printing, and downloading. The variable visual acuity nature of human vision across fovea and periphery prompted the need to study the differential magnification method as compared with the traditional linear magnification. With differential magnification, outer-area objects were magnified at a level higher than the inner-area objects. An application software was specially developed by the authors previously for the examination of differential linear and traditional linear magnification methods. This paper presents the enhancement of the application software and the addition of other magnification interface factors which worth further investigating. The newly designed differential nonlinear magnification method was featured and comparisons were made with the differential linear and the traditionally linear magnification methods. Graphical modeling environment method is very useful for developing control systems. In this paper, a human-mechanism interface is developed to integrate different graphical modeling environments, and remote control different hardware in different graphical modeling environments through TCP/IP network. A control system of planetary train type inverted pendulum mechanism with VisSim software is carried out to verify the feasibility and the convenience of the human-mechanism interface. Health Support Intelligent System of Diabetic (HSISD) system supports the patients change their lifestyles better monitoring the therapeutic plan achievement through by use of the internet. In this paper, we develop the HSISD system to consider the patient's motivation. The motivation is estimated based on the emotions aroused from the variance of laboratory data in the HSISD system. Furthermore, to increase the usability of the system, we developed the interface system for mobile phones. Mao Zedong once said 'All genuine knowledge originates in direct experience'. Appendix B describes the experiences gained through a range of development projects, all concerned with the design, development, demonstration and maintenance of real broadband signalling systems. The authors of this appendix have participated in the development of a variety of systems offering broadband capabilities, all of which support some form of broadband signalling between the service user and service provider. The process of designing and building such systems can provide invaluable insights into issues such as development methods, signalling performance, programming interface definitions, etc., none of which are apparent from purely paper-based studies or through the standards specification process.
