The study focused on investigating the convective heat transfer of nano-encapsulated phase change suspensions in the presence of a non-uniform magnetic field within an annuli space between two square cylinders. The principal equations for the fluid flow and phase change heat transfer were formulated as partial differential equations and then represented into dimensionless format. The finite element method was used to solve these equations and simulate the free convection heat transfer. The effect of various factors, including Hartmann, Rayleigh, Eckert and Stefan numbers, geometry aspect ratio, nanoparticles’ concentration, and fusion temperature, on the heat transfer rate was examined. A neural network was also introduced and trained to establish the connection between the control parameters (inputs) and the heat transfer rate (output). The outcomes were presented in the form of the modified Nusselt number, along with isotherms, heat capacity ratio (phase change) contours, and streamlines. The results demonstrated that the neural network could accurately predict the heat transfer rate and provide a comprehensive map of heat transfer with respect to the control parameters. Nano-Encapsulated Phase Change Materials (NEPCMs) can be considered as a new type of nanofluids, in which the nanoparticle consists of a core and a shell. The core part is made of a Phase Change Material (PCM) which can undergo solid-liquid phase change at a certain fusion temperature, and absorb/release a significant amount of energy due to latent heat of the phase change.

Efficient energy conversion and utilization remain paramount in addressing the growing energy demand and environmental concerns. Concentrating photovoltaic thermal (CPVT) systems have emerged as promising solutions by integrating photovoltaic (PV) cells with thermal components for simultaneous electricity and heat generation. In this paper, we propose the application of the Boosted Regression Tree (BRT) algorithm to predict the entropy generation rate in a CPVT system equipped with a perforated twisted tube turbulator. Brief introduction of numerical analysis of local and global rates of frictional (S˙fr) and thermal (S˙th) irreversibilities in a CPVT system equipped with a perforated twisted tube turbulator. The results approve the efficacy of the BRT algorithm in predicting the entropy generation rate. Through comprehensive simulations and data analysis, we establish a predictive model that considers factors such as solar irradiance, fluid flow rate, tube geometry, and turbulator characteristics. The BRT model exhibits remarkable accuracy in capturing the nuanced interplay of these factors, enabling reliable estimations of entropy generation rate.

In the realm of internal combustion engines, there is a growing utilization of alternative renewable fuels as substitutes for traditional diesel and gasoline. This surge in demand is driven by the imperative to diminish fuel consumption and adhere to stringent regulations concerning engine emissions. Sole reliance on experimental analysis is inadequate to effectively address combustion, performance, and emission issues in engines. Consequently, the integration of engine modelling, grounded in machine learning methodologies and statistical data through the response surface method (RSM), has become increasingly significant for enhanced analytical outcomes. This study aims to explore the contemporary applications of RSM in assessing the feasibility of a wide range of renewable alternative fuels for internal combustion engines. Initially, the study outlines the fundamental principles and procedural steps of RSM, offering readers an introduction to this multifaceted statistical technique. Subsequently, the study delves into a comprehensive examination of the recent applications of alternative renewable fuels, focusing on their impact on combustion, performance, and emissions in the domain of internal combustion engines. Furthermore, the study sheds light on the advantages and limitations of employing RSM, and discusses the potential of combining RSM with other modelling techniques to optimise results. The overarching objective is to provide a thorough insight into the role and efficacy of RSM in the evaluation of renewable alternative fuels, thereby contributing to the ongoing discourse in the field of internal combustion engines.

Medium voltage (MV) switchgear is a vital part of modern power systems, responsible for regulating the flow of electrical power and ensuring the safety of equipment and personnel. However, switchgear can experience various types of faults that can compromise its reliability and safety. Common faults in switchgear include arcing, tracking, corona, normal cases, and mechanical faults. Accurate detection of these faults is essential for maintaining the safety of MV switchgear. In this paper, we propose a novel approach for fault detection using a hybrid model (1D-CNN-LSTM) in both the time domain (TD) and frequency domain (FD). The proposed approach involves gathering a dataset of switchgear operation data and pre-processing it to prepare it for training. The hybrid model is then trained on this dataset, and its performance is evaluated in the testing phase. The results of the testing phase demonstrate the effectiveness of the hybrid model in detecting faults. The model achieved 100% accuracy in both the time and frequency domains for classifying faults in Switchgear, including arcing, tracking, and mechanical faults. Additionally, the model achieved 98.4% accuracy in detecting corona faults in the TD. The hybrid model proposed in this study provides an effective and efficient approach for fault detection in MV switchgear. By learning spatial and temporal features simultaneously, this model can accurately classify faults in both the TD and FD. This approach has significant potential to improve the safety of MV switchgear as well as other industrial applications.

The fuel combustion in diesel engines can be improved by adding nanomaterials to the fuel which result in an reduction in pollutant emissions and enhance the quality of fuel combustion. The engine performance and soot nanoparticles characteristics were evaluated in this study with adding nanoparticles of copper oxide (CuO2) to the rapeseed methyl ester (RME) and diesel under variable engine speeds. The addition of CuO2 to the RME significantly improve brake thermal efficiency (BTE) and decline the brake specific fuel consumption (BSFC) by 23.6% and 7.6%, respectively, compared to the neat RME and diesel fuel. The inclusion CuO2 nanoparticles into the RME and diesel led to decrease the concentration and number of particulate matter (PM)by 33% and 17% in comparison with neat RME and diesel without nano additives, respectively. Moreover, PM is significantly decreased by 31.5% during the RME combustion in comparison with neat RME and diesel under various engine speeds. It was also obtained that the number of emitted particles (npo) reduced by 23.5% with adding nanoparticles to the RME in comparison with diesel, while the diameter of soot nanoparticles (dpo) increased by 8.6% in comparison with diesel. Furthermore, the addition CuO2 to the RME decreased the size and number of particles more than to the diesel fuel.

The most interesting themes worldwide are those relating to sustainable water and energy supplies. They have a significant impact on any society's economic wellbeing. Desalination of brackish water has proven to be a good solution to the freshwater issue that many regions of the world face. Solar stills (SSs) are a simple distillation technique for freshwater purification. From the conventional SSs to the modified SSs, several studies have been carried out to improve the effectiveness of this technique. Pyramid solar stills are effective and efficient, according to researches that have been done to develop several types of solar stills for increased distillate production. In this review, we aim to provide an extensive review of recent advancements in pyramid solar distillation techniques, including new technologies, methods, and best practices. Consequently, this paper helps researchers choose the optimal technique to get the best-optimized productivity from a pyramid solar still. This review highlights the efforts of researchers to improve the efficiency of solar distillation systems by exploring recent techniques and innovations in pyramid solar distillers up to 2023. Various results have demonstrated the significance of modifications or improvements to pyramid SSs, such as utilizing storage materials, which can significantly increase productivity by approximately 35%. Additionally, a v-corrugated absorber with PCM can enhance the yield by about 87.4%. Furthermore, the use of wick materials can increase freshwater production by up to 122%, with jute wick outperforming cotton wick. Integrating evacuated tubes and carbon black nanofluid into a pyramid solar still can also improve freshwater production by approximately 57.1%. Combining nano and wick materials can further boost pyramid distiller productivity by up to 176% and increase thermal efficiency to 60.44%. Moreover, using pyramid distillers with revolving cylinders and electrical heaters can result in a daily output increase of 214%, producing up to 9100 ml/m2/day.

Zeolite desiccant particles are well known for their strong affinity to adsorb water vapor molecules; however, they require significant regeneration energy to be created. This paper presents an experimental study of the adsorption and regeneration processes of a monolayer zeolite for indoor dehumidification to the 13X zeolite beads with a 4 × 8 mesh bead size and a pore opening 10 A⁰ were used as this monolayer. An experimental investigation was conducted to determine the effects of the relative humidity, temperature, and air flow rate on the adsorption and regeneration processes. The results show the effectiveness of the monolayer coating method and the relative humidity significantly affects the adsorption process, and that the airflow rate surrounding and through the zeolite beads increases the adsorption and desorption of the water vapor molecules. In the absence of the meniscus radius formation due to the monolayer arrangement prevents external condensation. With an airflow rate of Re = 1773, the full adsorption process at a relative humidity of 99% was obtained within 37 min; meanwhile, the regeneration process proceeded at 100 °C within 66 min. The adsorption time was reduced by 27% and 43% as the Reynold number increases to 2586 and 3325, respectively. Likewise, the effectiveness of the regeneration time is decreased by 0.07% and 14% within the same Reynold number increases. Results obtained from this research can be used to guide the future development of polymer-coated energy exchangers.

‏ Manipulating in fuel injection strategies and introduce renewable fuel in diesel engine can provide clean combustion and lower pollutant emissions. The effect of fuel injection pressures (FIPs) and RME on combustion characteristics, NOx emissions and soot nanoparticle emissions when rapeseed methyl esters was used have been investigated at 1500 rpm and two brake mean effective pressure of 2.5 and 5 bar. A calibrated electrostatic mobility spectrometer (EMS) was used to measure the soot nanoparticle number size distributions. The peak cylinder pressure and heat release rates were evaluated when the FIP increased for all fuels studied. The results showed that further advanced in combustion with RME, meanwhile a shorter ignition delay from the fuel was exhibited in comparison with diesel fuel combustion under various FIP. Furthermore, the values of BSFC decreased by 3.7% and 17.8% from the RME combustion at high and low engine load, respectively. The reduction in NOx emissions was obtained when FIP increased during RME combustion in comparison with ULSD under low engine load. In contrast, RME generated higher NOx by 7% and lower soot nanoparticles by 27% compared to the ULSD under high engine load. RME combustion produced lower nucleation particle numbers in comparison with those emitted from ULSD under all engine operating conditions as well as the accumulation mode particles was higher for ULSD.

The energy sector is an intrinsically dynamic and complex system, and therefore its behaviour is not solely controlled by constituent components. Rather, it is a consequence of dynamic interactions among them. To properly manage such a system in a sustainable manner, it is necessary to understand the underlying dynamics of component interactions. Despite this, the interconnections between components of the energy sector in research and policy have received little attention. Here, we outline crucial limitations of previous efforts and emphasize the importance of using systems thinking in addressing the energy sector's sustainability challenges. We demonstrate this by a case study of the Australian energy sector, which has experienced emerging sustainability issues. Research findings show that current policies promoting energy development in the country are likely to be ‘fixes that fail’ that ultimately undermine sustainability. To achieve in building a sustainable energy sector, the policy must focus on implementing long-term solutions and avoid short-term quick fixes.

A numerical study of the Buoyancy-driven flow in a porous enclosure, having a bottom heated wavy wall, filled with Cu-Al2O3/water hybrid nanofluid is performed using the local thermal non-equilibrium model. The non-dimensional governing equations of fluid flow and heat transfer are solved using the Galerkin finite element method. The state variables change in the porous enclosure is represented using the Darcy-Brinkman model. The impacts of various effective parameters which include nanoparticle volume fraction (0 ≤ Φ ≤ 0.04), Darcy number (10−5 ≤ Da ≤ 10−2), modified conductivity ratio (0.1 ≤ γ ≤ 1000), the number of undulations (1≤ N ≤ 5) and the amplitude of waviness (0.05 ≤ A ≤ 2). The results showed that the Darcy number is the first controlling parameter on the fluid flow and temperature distributions followed by A, N and γ. Additionally, the heat transfer rate is increased by increasing the thermal conductivity of the nanoparticles reaching its maximum value at Φ = 0.04. Furthermore, by comparing the temperature fields of the fluid phase and solid matrix, it is clear that the effects of the local thermal non-equilibrium are significant at a low modified thermal conductivity ratio and high Darcy number.

Flat solar collectors are extensively utilized in various domestic and industrial applications to reduce energy consumption. In this study, an-active flat plate solar collector (FPSC) with an internal absorber tube receiver was fabricated and tested in Al-Samawa city, Iraq (latitude 31.19°N and longitude 45.17°E). The ambient temperature and incident solar radiation at the experimental location were reached 39 °C and 840 W/m2, respectively. In this study, the number of riser tubes connected to headers that are covered with a glass sheet in a conventional FPSC were replaced with a single serpentine-shaped collector tube covered with a plastic sheet. The proposed solar collector used a smooth copper tube with internal and exterior diameters of 9.5 and 12 mm, respectively, and a total length of 1000 mm. A TRNSYS model of a flat plate collector integrated with an absorber tube was developed, simulated, and validated using the experimental data. Temperature and flow rate data were obtained concurrently throughout the experiments to evaluate the performance of the fabricated solar collector. The temperature at the solar collector input stayed relatively constant at 37.7 °C, and the water flow rate remained constant at 0.75 L/min. The results indicated that the temperature at the solar collector output ranged from 52 to 61 °C, with an average of 58 °C. The efficiency of the proposed solar collector ranges from approximately 45% to 67%, with an average of 58%. Overall, the simulation results of the TRNSYS model are in excellent agreement with experimental data. The average discrepancy between the tests and simulations for temperature differential and collector efficiency is approximately 1%.

The performance of microchannel with sidewall dimples and fillet profile in the bottom surface is investigated. Two dimple sizes of (0.5 mm and 1 mm) are systematically clustered along the channels with and without fillet are considered. The laminar flow regime is assumed with Reynolds numbers ranging from 200 to 1200. The results show that the dimples and fillet profile have a significant effect on the thermal performance of microchannel. The Nusselt number of the microchannels with 1 mm dimples is 20% higher than the plain microchannel. However, an increase in pressure drop of 10% was obtained. In addition, the fillet profile impacts the thermal performance of microchannels without pressure drop penalty increase. Combining both dimples and fillet profile causes a significant enhancement in the thermal performance. Nusselt number of microchannels heat sink with 1 mm dimple size and fillet profile is 60% higher compared to the plain microchannel.

The developments in the field of nano-additives have increased in the recent years due to the desire to reduce the level of exhaust emissions in diesel engines. The soot characteristics of particulate matter (PM) and nitrogen oxides (NOX) were experimentally investigated using two concentrations of titanium dioxide (TiO2) as nano-additives (25 ppm and 40 ppm) blended with C20D (composed of 20% castor oil methyl ester and 80% diesel fuel) and 30% exhaust gas recirculation (EGR). The combustion of C20D + TiO2 increases brake thermal efficiency (BTE) by 2.8% in comparison with neat C20D, while a significant reduction was obtained in BSFC 6.5% and NOX emissions were maintained at a level parallel with diesel. The results indicated that the technique involving a high EGR rate and the addition of 25 ppm and 40 ppm of TiO2 nanoparticles to the C20D exhibits better reductions in NOX emissions by 17.34% and 21.83%, respectively, compared to the technique comprising the use of C20D + TiO2 and C20D. The reduction in the total concentration of PM via the addition of TiO2 nanoparticles to the C20D was 26.74% greater than neat C20D and diesel. In contrast, the incorporation of a high rate of EGR with C20D +TiO2 increased the PM concentrations by 16.85% compared to the technique without EGR. Furthermore, the high concentrations of TiO2 nanoparticles (40 ppm) in the C20D produced 19 nm smaller soot nanoparticles compared to the 23 nm larger soot nanoparticles produced from the low concentrations of TiO2 nanoparticles (25 ppm) added into the C20D. The current investigation reveals that the reduction in NOX emissions and the production of soot nanoparticles notably improved due to the synergic effect of EGR, the TiO2 nanoparticles, and biodiesel.

Wind turbine farms require efficient operation and maintenance strategies to ensure long-term profitability and cost-effectiveness. However, temperatures and dust accumulation can significantly affect turbine performance and increase maintenance costs. This study investigates the impact of air filter clogging on wind turbine nacelle temperature and performance by collecting data from the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system of wind farms in southern Jordan, including temperature, wind speed, and power generation. The findings demonstrate that uncleaned air filters can lead to inefficient heat dissipation, higher nacelle temperatures, and reduced power production. Turbines with uncleaned filters experienced an average nacelle temperature increase of 15.44 °C compared to 13.30 °C for turbines with clean filters, resulting in a difference in the power production of 66.54 kW.

The damaging effects of corona faults have made them a major concern in metal-clad switchgear, requiring extreme caution during operation. Corona faults are also the primary cause of flashovers in medium-voltage metal-clad electrical equipment. The root cause of this issue is an electrical breakdown of the air due to electrical stress and poor air quality within the switchgear. Without proper preventative measures, a flashover can occur, resulting in serious harm to workers and equipment. As a result, detecting corona faults in switchgear and preventing electrical stress buildup in switches is critical. Recent years have seen the successful use of Deep Learning (DL) applications for corona and non-corona detection, owing to their autonomous feature learning capability. This paper systematically analyzes three deep learning techniques, namely 1D-CNN, LSTM, and 1D-CNN-LSTM hybrid models, to identify the most effective model for detecting corona faults. The hybrid 1D-CNN-LSTM model is deemed the best due to its high accuracy in both the time and frequency domains. This model analyzes the sound waves generated in switchgear to detect faults. The study examines model performance in both the time and frequency domains. In the time domain analysis (TDA), 1D-CNN achieved success rates of 98%, 98.4%, and 93.9%, while LSTM obtained success rates of 97.3%, 98.4%, and 92.4%. The most suitable model, the 1D-CNN-LSTM, achieved success rates of 99.3%, 98.4%, and 98.4% in differentiating corona and non-corona cases during training, validation, and testing. In the frequency domain analysis (FDA), 1D-CNN achieved success rates of 100%, 95.8%, and 95.8%, while LSTM obtained success rates of 100%, 100%, and 100%. The 1D-CNN-LSTM model achieved a 100%, 100%, and 100% success rate during training, validation, and testing. Hence, the developed algorithms achieved high performance in identifying corona faults in switchgear, particularly the 1D-CNN-LSTM model due to its accuracy in detecting corona faults in both the time and frequency domains.

With its unique qualities, such as infinite supply, high octane number, and capacity to cut greenhouse gas emissions, alcohol is a viable alternative fuel for SI engines. This review article aims to reveal to readers the effects of alcohol on the performance, combustion behavior, and emission characteristics of SI engines by collecting the outcomes from previous research. This article looks at methanol, ethanol, and butanol fuel qualities. The performance of SI engines with butanol, ethanol, and methanol combined with gasoline is investigated in terms of brake torque, brake power, fuel consumption, thermal efficiency, volumetric efficiency, mean effective pressure, and coefficient of variation under various conditions. Second, in-cylinder pressure, mass fraction burnt, ignition delay, pressure increases, and heat release rates are also used to evaluate the combustion characteristic. Finally, the article discusses pollutant emissions such as CO, CO2, NOx, UHC, and exhaust gas temperature. Methanol, ethanol, and butanol mixed with gasoline increased fuel consumption and lowered spark-ignition engines’ thermal efficiency. When alcohol was combined with gasoline, most research found that CO, NOx, and UHC emissions were reduced due to improved combustion.

The objective of this review is to provide a deep overview of liquid biofuels produced from sugarcane bagasse and to address the economic challenges of an ethanol and acetone-butanol-ethanol blend in commercial processes. The chemistry of sugarcane bagasse is presented. Pretreatment technologies such as physical, chemical pretreatment, biological, and combination pretreatments used in the fermentation process are also provided and summarised. Different types of anaerobic bacteria Clostridia (yeast) are discussed to identify the ingredient best suited for sugarcane bagasse, which can assist the industry in commercializing ethanol and acetone-butanol-ethanol biofuel from biomass sugarcane. The use of an acetone-butanol-ethanol mixture and ethanol blend in internal combustion engines is also discussed. The literature then supports the proposal of the best operating conditions for fermentation to enhance ethanol and acetone-butanol-ethanol plant efficiency in the sugar waste industry and its application in internal combustion engines.

During the last four centuries, there have been extensive research activities looking for green and clean sources of energy instead of traditional (fossil) energy in order to reduce the accumulation of gases and environmental pollution. Natural dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) are one of the most promising types of photovoltaic cells for generating clean energy at a low cost. In this study, DSSCs were collected and experimentally tested using four different dyes extracted from Mentha leaves, Helianthus annuus leaves, Fragaria, and a mixture of the above extracts in equal proportions as natural stimuli for TiO2 films. The result show that solar energy was successfully turned into electricity. Additionally, DSSCs based on mixtures of dyes showed better results than those based on single dyes. Efficiency (η) was 0.714%, and the fill factor (FF) was 83.3% for the cell area.

The use of insects as a biofuel feedstock has received limited research, and little is known about the fuel characteristics of insect biofuel. Fuel properties characterization can guide researchers focused on renewable fuel for the internal combustion engine. Therefore, this investigation focused on the physical-chemical properties modification of Hermetia illucens larvae oil (HILO) and diesel fuel blends, which could highly become an alternative renewable fuel. Five test fuel blends of HILO and diesel fuel were prepared at 0%, 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% on a volume basis. Fuel properties such as chemical composition, density, viscosity, heating value, cetane number, and flash point of the test fuel blends were analyzed and compared to the diesel fuel. The main physical-chemical properties of HILO-diesel fuel blends were determined following the ASTM standards. Based on the results, the density, viscosity, cetane number, and flash point of the diesel fuel-HILO fuel blends were increased by 11.28%, 740.30%, 16.92%, and 86.67%, respectively, with the addition of HILO, except for the heating value reduced by 13.66%.

Both electrical and thermal efficiencies combine in determining and evaluating the performance of a PV/T collector. In this study, two PV/T systems consisting of poly and monocrystalline PV panels were used, which are connected from the bottom by a heat exchanger consisting of a spiral tube through which a nanofluid circulates. In this study, a base fluid, water, and ethylene glycol were used, and iron oxide nanoparticles (nano-Fe2O3) were used as an additive. The mixing was carried out according to the highest specifications adopted by the researchers, and the thermophysical properties of the fluid were carefully examined. The prepared nanofluid properties showed a limited effect of the nanoparticles on the density and viscosity of the resulting fluid. As for the thermal conductivity, it increased by increasing the mass fraction added to reach 140% for the case of adding 2% of nano-Fe2O3. The results of the zeta voltage test showed that the supplied suspensions had high stability. When a mass fraction of 0.5% nano-Fe2O3 was added the zeta potential was 68 mV, while for the case of 2%, it reached 49 mV. Performance tests showed a significant increase in the efficiencies with increased mass flow rate. It was found when analyzing the performance of the two systems for nanofluid flow rates from 0.08 to 0.17 kg/s that there are slight differences between the monocrystalline, and polycrystalline systems operating in the spiral type of exchanger. As for the case of using monocrystalline PV the electrical, thermal, and total PV/T efficiencies with 2% added Fe2O3 ranged between 10% to 13.3%, 43–59%, and 59 to 72%, respectively, compared to a standalone PV system. In the case of using polycrystalline PV, the electrical, thermal, and total PV/T efficiencies ranged from 11% to 13.75%, 40.3% to 63%, and 55.5% to 77.65%, respectively, compared to the standalone PV system. It was found that the PV/T electrical exergy was between 45, and 64 W with thermal exergy ranged from 40 to 166 W, and total exergy from 85 to 280 W, in the case of using a monocrystalline panel. In the case of using polycrystalline, the PV/T electrical, thermal, and total exergy were between 45 and 66 W, 42–172 W, and 85–238 W, respectively. The results showed that both types of PV panels can be used in the harsh weather conditions of the city of Baghdad with acceptable, and efficient productivity.

Wind turbine blades perform the most important function in the wind energy conversion process. It plays the most vital role of absorbing the kinetic energy of the wind, and converting it to mechanical energy before it is transformed into electrical energy by generators. In this work, National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) 4412 and SG6043 airfoils were selected to design a small horizontal axis variable speed wind turbine blade for harvesting efficient energy from low wind speed areas. Due to the low wind profile of the targeted area, a blade of one-meter radius was considered in this study. To attain the set objectives of fast starting time and generate more torque and power at low wind speeds, optimization was carryout by varying Reynolds numbers (Re) on tip speed ratios (TSR) values of 4, 5, and 6. The blade element momentum (BEM) method was developed in MATLAB programming code to iteratively find the best twist and chord distributions along the one-meter blade length for each Re and tip speed ratio (TSR) value. To further enhance the blade performance, the twist and chord distributions were transferred to Q-blade software, where simulations of the power coefficients (Cp) were performed and further optimized by varying the angles of attack. The highest power coefficients values of 0.42, 0.43, and 0.44 were recorded with NACA 4412 rotor blades, and 0.43, 0.44, and 0.45 with SG6043 rotor blades. At the Re of 3.0 × 105, the blades were able to harvest maximum power of 144.73 watts (W), 159.69 W, and 201.04 W with the NACA 4412 and 213.15 W, 226.44 W, 245.09 W with the SG6043 at the TSR of 4, 5, and 6 respectively. The lowest cut-in speed of 1.80 m/s and 1.70 m/s were achieved with NACA 4412 and SG6043 airfoils at TSR 4. At a low wind speed of 4 m/s, the blades were able to harness an efficient power of 79.3. W and 80.10 W with both rotor blades at the TSR 4 and 6 accordingly.

Flat plate solar collectors can easily be termed as the most vastly studied alternative energy transforming and generating technology of the twenty-first century. As the world is racing towards the fourth industrial revolution (Industry 4.0), more and more energy is being consumed for mega projects to be materialized. Electronic devices are not only confined to conventional intermittent and costlier electric energy, but also fuel. Solar energy is now being shared to work smart devices, transform electric energy, and operate automobiles, aeronautics, water heating, and space heating. Traditional flat plate solar collectors can only occupy 50–60% of their thermal efficiency, resulting in less heat generation and a low thermal performance because of using a common absorber made of copper tubing compared to a high conductive metal sheet (copper or aluminum). To ameliorate the thermal efficiency of the solar collector, it is imperative to find a superior alternative heat exchanger that will result in improved thermal performance of the solar collector. In this study, light has been shed in terms of substituting conventional heat absorbers with crystal nano-cellulose (CNC) and a graphene hybrid. An empirical comparison has been drawn by comparing the familiar 0.3% base fluid, 0.5% graphene, and CNC separately, as well as 0.3%, 0.5% CNC, and graphene hybrids at different temperatures. Remarkably, this work has proven that a CNC and graphene hybrid fluid with a volumetric fraction of 0.5% concentration and at a high temperature of 80 °C, gave astounding results for improved thermal conductivity, viscosity, and other parameters. CNC and graphene hybrid nanofluid can be a superior substitute for a conventional base fluid, resulting in prolific thermal performance.

Because of its potential to directly transform solar energy into heat and energy, without harmful environmental effects such as greenhouse gas emissions. Hybrid nanofluid is an efficient way to improve the thermal efficiency of solar systems using a possible heat transfer fluid with superior thermo-physical properties. The object of this paper is the study the latest developments in hybrid applications in the fields of solar energy systems in different solar collectors. Hybrid nanofluids are potential fluids with better thermo-physical properties and heat transfer efficiency than conventional heat transfer fluids (oil, water, ethylene glycol) with single nanoparticle nanofluids. The research found that a single nanofluid can be replaced by a hybrid nanofluid because it enhances heat transfer. This work presented the recent developments in hybrid nanofluid preparation methods, stability factors, thermal improvement methods, current applications, and some mathematical regression analysis which is directly related to the efficiency enhancement of solar collector. This literature revealed that hybrid nanofluids have a great opportunity to enhance the efficiency of solar collector due to their noble thermophysical properties in replace of conventional heat transfer working fluids. Finally, some important problems are addressed, which must be solved for future study.

Adoption of hydrogen energy as an alternative to fossil fuels could be a major step towards decarbonising and fulfilling the needs of the energy sector. Hydrogen can be an ideal alternative for many fields compared with other alternatives. However, there are many potential environmental challenges that are not limited to production and distribution systems, but they also focus on how hydrogen is used through fuel cells and combustion pathways. The use of hydrogen has received little attention in research and policy, which may explain the widely claimed belief that nothing but water is released as a by-product when hydrogen energy is used. We adopt systems thinking and system dynamics approaches to construct a conceptual model for hydrogen energy, with a special focus on the pathways of hydrogen use, to assess the potential unintended consequences, and possible interventions; to highlight the possible growth of hydrogen energy by 2050. The results indicate that the combustion pathway may increase the risk of the adoption of hydrogen as a combustion fuel, as it produces NOx, which is a key air pollutant that causes environmental deterioration, which may limit the application of a combustion pathway if no intervention is made. The results indicate that the potential range of global hydrogen demand is rising, ranging from 73 to 158 Mt in 2030, 73 to 300 Mt in 2040, and 73 to 568 Mt in 2050, depending on the scenario presented.

Local thermal equilibrium (LTE) is a frequently-employed hypothesis when analysing convection heat transfer in porous media. However, investigation of the non-equilibrium phenomenon exhibits that such hypothesis is typically not true for many circumstances such as rapid cooling or heating, and in industrial applications involving immediate transient thermal response, leading to a lack of local thermal equilibrium (LTE). Therefore, for the sake of appropriately conduct the technological process, it has become necessary to examine the validity of the LTE assumption before deciding which energy model should be used. Indeed, the legitimacy of the LTE hypothesis has been widely investigated in different applications and different modes of heat transfer, and many criteria have been developed. This paper summarises the studies that investigated this hypothesis in forced, free, and mixed convection, and presents the appropriate circumstances that can make the LTE hypothesis to be valid. For example, in forced convection, the literature shows that this hypothesis is valid for lower Darcy number, lower Reynolds number, lower Prandtl number, and/or lower solid phase thermal conductivity; however, it becomes invalid for higher effective fluid thermal conductivity and/or lower interstitial heat transfer coefficient.

A study on the application of oxygenated turpentine oil as a bio-additive in diesel fuel was conducted. The purpose of this research was to investigate the effect of oxygenated turpentine oil additive in diesel fuel on the performance and emission characteristics in diesel engines. Oxygenated turpentine oil is obtained from the oxidation process of turpentine oil. In this experimental study, the influences of oxygenated turpentine oil-diesel blended fuel OT0.2 (0.2% vol oxygenated turpentine oil and 99.8% vol diesel) were compared with pure diesel on engine performance, and emission characteristics were examined in a one-cylinder four-stroke CI engine. The test was performed at two engine loads (25% and 50%) and seven engine speeds (from 1200–2400 rpm with intervals of 200 rpm). The physiochemical characteristics of test fuels were acquired. The engine indicated power, indicated torque, fuel flow rate, and emissions (carbon dioxide, CO2; carbon monoxide, CO; and nitrogen oxide, NOX) were examined. The results revealed that the engine power shows slight increments of 0.7–1.1%, whereas the engine torque slightly decreased with oxygenated turpentine usage compared to pure diesel in most conditions. Furthermore, a reduction in NOX emission decreased by about 0.3–66% with the addition of oxygenated turpentine in diesel compared to diesel. However, usage of OT0.2 decreased fuel flow rate in most speeds at low load but gave a similar value to diesel at 50% load. CO emissions slightly increased with an average of 1.2% compared to diesel while CO2 emissions increased up to 37.5% than diesel. The high-water content, low cetane number, and low heating value of oxygenated turpentine oil were the reasons for the inverse effect found in the engine performances.

Currently, the existing condition-based maintenance (CBM) diagnostic test practices for ultrasound require the tester to interpret test results manually. Different testers may give different opinions or interpretations of the detected ultrasound. It leads to wrong interpretation due to depending on tester experience. Furthermore, there is no commercially available product to standardize the interpretation of the ultrasound data. Therefore, the objective is the correct interpretation of an ultrasound, which is one of the CBM methods for medium switchgears, by using an artificial neural network (ANN), to give more accurate results when assessing their condition. Information and test results from various switchgears were gathered in order to develop the classification and severity of the corona, surface discharge, and arcing inside of the switchgear. The ultrasound data were segregated based on their defects found during maintenance. In total, 314 cases of normal, 160 cases of the corona, 149 cases of tracking, and 203 cases of arcing were collected. Noise from ultrasound data was removed before uploading it as a training process to the ANN engine, which used the extreme learning machine (ELM) model. The developed AI-based switchgear faults classification system was designed and incorporated with the feature of scalability and can be tested and replicated for other switchgear conditions. A customized graphical user interface (GUI), Ultrasound Analyzer System (UAS), was also developed, to enable users to obtain the switchgear condition or classification output via a graphical interface screen. Hence, accurate decision-making based on this analysis can be made to prioritize the urgency for the remedial works.

The demand for fossil fuels is increasing because of globalization and rising energy demands. As a result, many nations are exploring alternative energy sources, and hydrogen is an efficient and practical alternative fuel. In the transportation industry, the development of hydrogen-powered cars aims to maximize fuel efficiency and significantly reduce exhaust gas emission and concentration. The impact of using hydrogen as a supplementary fuel for spark ignition (SI) and compression ignition (CI) engines on engine performance and gas emissions was investigated in this study. By adding hydrogen as a fuel in internal combustion engines, the torque, power, and brake thermal efficiency of the engines decrease, while their brake-specific fuel consumption increase. This study suggests that using hydrogen will reduce the emissions of CO, UHC, CO2, and soot; however, NOx emission is expected to increase. Due to the reduction of environmental pollutants for most engines and the related environmental benefits, hydrogen fuel is a clean and sustainable energy source, and its use should be expanded.

Using renewable oxygenated fuels such as ethanol is a proposed method to reduce diesel engine emission. Ethanol has lower density, viscosity, cetane number and calorific value than petroleum diesel (PD). Microalgae oil is renewable, environmentally friendly and has the potential to replace PD. In this paper, microalgae oil (10%) and ethanol (10%) have been mixed and added to (80%) diesel fuel as a renewable source of oxygenated fuel. The mixture of microalgae oil, ethanol and petroleum diesel (MOE20%) has been found to be homogenous and stable without using surfactant. The presence of microalgae oil improved the ethanol fuel demerits such as low density and viscosity. The transesterification process was not required for oil viscosity reduction due to the presence of ethanol. The MOE20% fuel has been tested in a variable compression ratio diesel engine at different speed. The engine test results with MOE20% showed a very comparable engine performance of in-cylinder pressure, brake power, torque and brake specific fuel consumption (BSFC) to that of PD. The NOx emission and HC have been improved while CO and CO2 were found to be lower than those from PD at low engine speed.

In this study, the fuel properties and engine performance of blended palm biodiesel-diesel using diethyl ether as additive have been investigated. The properties of B30 blended palm biodiesel-diesel fuel were measured and analyzed statistically with the addition of 2%, 4%, 6% and 8% (by volume) diethyl ether additive. The engine tests were conducted at increasing engine speeds from 1500 rpm to 3500 rpm and under constant load. Optimization of independent variables was performed using the desirability approach of the response surface methodology (RSM) with the goal of minimizing emissions and maximizing performance parameters. The experiments were designed using a statistical tool known as design of experiments (DoE) based on RSM.

Exhaust pollutants from two-stroke petrol engines are a problem for the environment. Biolubricants are a new generation of renewable and eco-friendly vegetable-based lubricants, which have attracted a lot of attention in recent years. In this paper, the applicability of the Technique for Order of Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) method to support the process of building the scoring system for selecting an appropriate two-stroke lubricant has been analyzed. For this purpose, biolubricants (TMP-triesters) based on castor oil, palm oil, and waste cooking oil were produced and then utilized in a 200 cc two-stroke gasoline engine to investigate their effects on its performance and exhaust emissions. The results obtained from the use of the entropy technique in the TOPSIS algorithm showed that palm oil-based lubricant took up the greatest distance from the Negative Ideal Solution (NIS) and was selected as the most optimal lubricant for these types of engines.

This work investigates the possibility of providing a use to one of the major byproducts generated during biodiesel processing: glycerin. In particular, the steam gasification of water/glycerin mixtures is studied, analysing the influence of temperature (range 600–900 °C), inlet flow rate (0.5–3 mL·min−1) and water/glycerin ratio (6–12 wt/wt, %) on the gas composition (H2, CO, CH4 and CO2), higher heating value, and generated power. In general, a more diluted water/glycerin mixture is more interesting in order to provide a higher fraction of hydrogen in the gas produced, although it also involves a decrease in the power obtained. Higher temperatures cause a greater contribution of water gas and water gas shift reactions in all cases, thus increasing the H2 proportion of the gas. Finally, a greater inlet flow rate increases gas production, but decreases the hydrogen proportion.

Several studies have quantified the energy consumption associated with crop production in various countries. However, these studies have not compared the energy consumption from a broad range of farming practices currently in practice, such as zero tillage, conventional tillage and irrigated farming systems. This study examines direct on-farm energy use for high value grain crops grown under different farming practices in Australia. Grain farming processes are identified and “typical” farming operation data are collected from several sources, including published and unpublished literature, as well as expert interviews. The direct on-farm energy uses are assessed for 27 scenarios, including three high value grain crops―wheat, barley and sorghum―for three regions (Northern, Southern and Western Australia) under three farming conditions with both dryland (both for conventional and zero-tillage) and irrigated conditions. It is found that energy requirement for farming operations is directly related to the intensity and frequency of farming operations, which in turn is related to tillage practices, soil types, irrigation systems, local climate, and crop types. Among the three studied regions, Western Australia requires less direct on-farm energy for each crop, mainly due to the easily workable sandy soils and adoption of zero tillage systems. In irrigated crops, irrigation energy remains a major contributor to the total on-farm energy demand, accounting for up to 85% of total energy use.

Biodiesel is a renewable fuel that has been widely used in recent years. There are various resources used as biodiesel feedstocks, including animal fats, waste oils, and vegetable oils. In the present study, Chrozophora tinctoria seed oil is introduced as a new biodiesel feedstock. C. tinctoria is a weed and non-edible plant. So, the primary cost of this resource is very low, and hence it can be considered as a biodiesel source. This plant can also grow in most weather conditions. In the present study, the research team tried to produce biodiesel from C. tinctoria seeds through a transesterification reaction. To intensify the transesterification reaction, an ultrasonic device was used. In order to perform the transesterification reaction, potassium hydroxide was used as a catalyst. Important parameters, such as the reaction temperature, reaction time, molar ratio of methanol, and concentration of the catalyst, were adjusted. Based on the adjusted conditions, a biodiesel yield of 84% was attained. The properties of the C. tinctoria biodiesel was compared with the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) standard. The results show the properties of a biodiesel: the density, kinematic viscosity, pour point, flash point, cloud point, and acid number are 0.868 g/cm3, 3.74 mPa, −7 °C, 169 °C, 4 °C, and 0.43 mg, respectively. The specification properties of C. tinctoria biodiesel can thus pass the requirement of the ASTM standard. So, C. tinctoria seed oil can be used as a suitable fuel source instead of petroleum-derived fuels.

Today, application of cavity receivers in solar concentrator systems is suggested as an interesting and novelty research subject for increasing thermal performance. In this research, a parabolic trough concentrator (PTC) with a rectangular cavity receiver was energetically investigated. The cavity receiver was studied with smooth and corrugated tubes. Different solar heat transfer fluids were considered, including water, air, and thermal oil. The effect of different operational parameters, as well as structural parameters, was investigated. The results showed that the linear rectangular cavity receiver with corrugated tube showed higher amounts of the absorbed heat and energy performance compared to the smooth tube as the cavity tube. Thermal performance of the rectangular cavity was improved using the application of water as the solar heat transfer fluid, which was followed by thermal oil and, finally, air, as the solar heat transfer fluid. Finally, it could be recommended that the rectangular cavity receiver with smooth tube using air as the solar heat transfer fluid is more appropriate for coupling this system with a Bryton cycle, whereas the rectangular cavity receiver with the corrugated tube using water or oil as the solar heat transfer fluid is recommended for achieving higher outlet temperature of the heat transfer fluid.

The development of a complex and dynamic system such as the energy sector requires a comprehensive understanding of its constituent components and their interactions, and thus requires approaches that can adapt to the dynamic complexity in systems. Previous efforts mainly used reductionist approaches, which examine the components of the system in isolation, neglecting their interdependent nature. Such approaches reduce our ability to understand the system and/or mitigate undesirable outcomes. We adopt a system dynamics approach to construct an integrated model for analysing the behaviour of the energy sector. Although the Australian energy sector is used as a case study, the model can be applied in other context elsewhere around the world The results indicate that the current trajectory of the Australian energy sector is unsustainable and growth is not being controlled. Limits to growth are fast approaching due to excessive fossil fuel extraction, high emissions and high energy dependency. With the current growth, Australia’s global CO2 emissions footprint will increase to unprecedented levels reaching 12% by 2030 (9.5% for exports and 2.5% for domestic). Oil dependency will account for 43% and 47% of total consumption by 2030 and 2050. By 2032, coal will be the only fossil fuel resource available in Australia. Expansion of investment in coal and gas production is a large risk.

The household sector consumes a large amount of goods and services and is therefore a major source of global carbon emissions. This study aims to analyze per person household carbon emission (HCEs) patterns of urban and rural China over the period from 1995 to 2011. Annual macroeconomic data for the study were obtained from authentic Chinese government sources. Direct HCE estimates for each fossil fuel were obtained using the IPCC’s reference approach, and indirect HCEs were calculated by input-output analysis. In 1995, per person HCEs from direct sources for urban and rural China were 0.50 tCO2 and 0.22 tCO2, respectively; by 2011, these values had increased to 0.60 tCO2 and 0.61 tCO2, an increase of 20% and 177.27%, respectively. Similarly, in 1995, per person HCEs from indirect sources for urban and rural China were 0.43 tCO2 and 0.16 tCO2, respectively; by 2011, these values had increased to 1.77 tCO2 and 0.53 tCO2, respectively, an increase of 306% and 235%. The reasons for these differences and the sets of policies required to rectify increasing emissions are discussed. If current trends and practices continue, with a RMB1000 increase in per capita income from 2011 levels, per person HCEs in urban and rural China will increase by 0.119 tCO2 and 0.197 tCO2, respectively. This result indicates that the sector of society which is most vulnerable will contribute most to China’s increasing HCEs. Therefore, while developing energy consumption and emissions reduction policies and programs, principles of fairness and equity need to be followed.

Alternative fuels, like biodiesel, are being utilized as a renewable energy source and an effective substitute for the continuously depleting supply of mineral diesel as they have similar combustion characteristics. However, the use of pure biodiesel as a fuel for diesel engines is currently limited due to problems relating to fuel properties and its relatively poor cold flow characteristics. Therefore, the most acceptable option for improving the properties of biodiesel is the use of a fuel additive. In the present study, the properties of palm oil methyl esters with increasing additive content were investigated after addition of ethanol, butanol and diethyl ether. The results revealed varying improvement in acid value, density, viscosity, pour point and cloud point, accompanied by a slight decrease in energy content with an increasing additive ratio. The viscosity reductions at 5% additive were 12%, 7%, 16.5% for ethanol, butanol and diethyl ether, respectively, and the maximum reduction in pour point was 5 °C at 5% diethyl ether blend. Engine test results revealed a noticeable improvement in engine brake power and specific fuel consumption compared to palm oil biodiesel and the best performance was obtained with diethyl ether. All the biodiesel-additive blend samples meet the requirements of ASTM D6751 biodiesel fuel standards for the measured properties.

This paper discusses the design and development of moderate and intense low oxygen dilution (MILD) combustion burners, including details of the computational fluid dynamics process, step-by-step from designing the model until post-processing. A 40 mm diameter bluff-body burner was used as the flame stabilizer. The fuel nozzle was placed in the center with a diameter of 1mm and an annular air nozzle with an opening size of 1,570 mm2, and four EGR pipes were used. Non-premixed combustion with a turbulent realizable k-epsilon was used in the simulation. The fuel used is low calorific value gas (biogas). The synthetic biogas was a mixture of 60% methane and 40% carbon dioxide. The simulation was successfully achieved during the MILD regime where the ratio of maximum-to-average temperature was less than the required 23%.

The best Weibull distribution methods for the assessment of wind energy potential at different altitudes in desired locations are statistically diagnosed in this study. Seven different methods, namely graphical method (GM), method of moments (MOM), standard deviation method (STDM), maximum likelihood method (MLM), power density method (PDM), modified maximum likelihood method (MMLM) and equivalent energy method (EEM) were used to estimate the Weibull parameters and six statistical tools, namely relative percentage of error, root mean square error (RMSE), mean percentage of error, mean absolute percentage of error, chi-square error and analysis of variance were used to precisely rank the methods. The statistical fittings of the measured and calculated wind speed data are assessed for justifying the performance of the methods. The capacity factor and total energy generated by a small model wind turbine is calculated by numerical integration using Trapezoidal sums and Simpson’s rules. The results show that MOM and MLM are the most efficient methods for determining the value of k and c to fit Weibull distribution curves.

This work aims to investigate biofuels for diesel engines produced on a lab-scale from the fresh water microalgae Chlorella vulgaris (FWM-CV). The impact of growing conditions on the properties of biodiesel produced from FWM-CV was evaluated. The properties of FWM-CV biodiesel were found to be within the ASTM standards for biodiesel. Due to the limited amount of biodiesel produced on the lab-scale, the biomass of dry cells of FWM-CV was used to yield emulsified water fuel. The preparation of emulsion fuel with and without FWM-CV cells was conducted using ultrasound to overcome the problems of large size microalgae colonies and to form homogenized emulsions. The emulsified water fuels, prepared using ultrasound, were found to be stable and the size of FWM-CV colonies were effectively reduced to pass through the engine nozzle safely. Engine tests at 3670 rpm were conducted using three fuels: cottonseed biodiesel CS-B100, emulsified cottonseed biodiesel water fuel, water and emulsifier (CS-E20) and emulsified water containing FWM-CV cells CS-ME20. The results showed that the brake specific fuel consumption (BSFC) was increased by about 41% when the engine was fueled with emulsified water fuels compared to CS-B100. The engine power, exhaust gas temperature, NOx and CO2 were significantly lower than that produced by CS-B100. The CS-ME20 produced higher power than CS-E20 due to the heating value improvement as a result of adding FWM-CV cells to the fuel.

A parabolic solar dish concentrator, as the heat source of an organic Rankine cycle (ORC), can be used for power generation. Different types of tubular cavity receivers with different nanofluids can be considered for use in the solar dish collector to improve its efficiency. In the current research, an ORC with three different cavity receivers including hemispherical, cubical, and cylindrical are investigated using three nanofluids: Al2O3/oil, CuO/oil, and SiO2/oil. A numerical model is validated using experimental data. The ORC analysis is done for a constant evaporator pressure of 2.5 MPa, and condenser temperature of 38 °C. Methanol is employed as the ORC’s working fluid and a non-regenerative, ideal ORC system with different turbine inlet temperatures is considered. Furthermore, a fixed solar heat transfer fluid flow rate of 60 mL/s and dish diameter of 1.9 m is investigated. Results show that, compared to pure oil, the thermal efficiency of the cavity receivers increases slightly, and the pressure drop increases with the application of nanofluids. Furthermore, results show that the cubical cavity receiver, using oil/Al2O3 nanofluid, is the most efficient choice for application as the investigated solar ORC’s heat source.

In recent years, due to the favorable climate conditions of Iran, the cultivation of rapeseed has increased significantly. The aim of this study was to investigate the possibility of biodiesel production from one genotype of rapeseed (TERI (OE) R-983). An ultrasonic approach was used in order to intensify the reaction. Response surface methodology (RSM) was applied to identify the optimum conditions of the process. The results of this research showed that the conversion of biodiesel was found to be 87.175% under the optimized conditions of a 4.63:1 molar ratio (methanol to oil), 56.50% amplitude, and 0.4 s pulses for a reaction time of 5.22 min. Increasing the operating conditions, such as the molar ratio from 4:1 to 5.5:1, amplitude from 50% to 72.5%, reaction time from 3 min to 7 min, and pulse from 0.4 s to 1 s, increased the FAME (fatty acid methyl esters) yield by approximately 4.5%, 2.3%, 1.2%, and 0.5%, respectively. The properties of the TERI (OE) R-983 methyl ester met the requirements of the biodiesel standard (ASTM D6751), indicating the potential of the produced biodiesel as an alternative fuel.

Microalgae is considered as an excellent potential renewable source of fuel in many forms including powder or slurry. A high percentage of emulsified water in the fuel is reported to reduce diesel engines’ emissions such as NOx, but that will compromise the engine output power. Using microalgae powder as an additive to enhance the emulsified water fuel heating value is the main objective of this work. Diesel engine combustion, vibration, performance and emissions were evaluated for pure cottonseed biodiesel (CS-B100), emulsified water 20% (vol.) in cottonseed biodiesel (CSB-E20) and emulsified water 20% (vol.) containing Fresh Water Microalgae Chlorella Vulgaris (FWM-CV) in cottonseed biodiesel (CSB-ME20). The emulsified water fuels showed a reduction in in-cylinder pressure, vibration, brake power, torque, exhaust gas temperature, CO2 and NOx, while BSFC and O2 were higher than the pure biodiesel (CS-B100). CSB-ME20 produced higher power and torque than CSB-E20 due to the presence of microalgae in the fuel that increased the energy content of the fuel.

As with other regions of Iran, due to excessive extraction of groundwater for intense agricultural activity, Ghorveh plain, a water-scarce irrigation district in the west of Iran, has faced a serious water crisis during the last decade. The present study investigates the impacts of two scenario policies, namely, non-price policy (as a supply-oriented policy) and water pricing policies (as a demand-oriented policy) on agricultural sector of Ghorveh Plain, using positive mathematical programming (PMP). The model was calibrated by using farm-level data for the crop years in 2016−2017. Our findings indicate that applying water supply constraint policy will change the land use and cropping pattern to the crops with higher water productivity. The increase of water resource constraints can lead to the increase of water economic return which indicates a rising value of water resources shortage, warning the producers of the agriculture sector to allocate water to the crops with higher economic value under the water resources shortage conditions. In addition, the findings underline that in a situation where the price of irrigation water is low due to the low elasticity of water demand in the agriculture sector, formulating the economic instruments such as rising water prices does not solely suffice to achieve sustainable water resource management. However, mixed scenarios emphasized that the water distribution policies should be aligned with the increases in water cost.

This paper discusses the design and development of the Moderate and Intense Low oxygen Dilution (MILD) combustion burner using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations. The CFD commercial package was used to simulate preliminary designs for the burner before the final design was sent to the workshop for fabrication. The burner is required to be a non-premixed and open burner. To capture and use the exhaust gas, the burner was enclosed within a large circular shaped wall with an opening at the top. An external EGR pipe was used to transport the exhaust gas which was mixed with the fresh oxidant. To control the EGR and exhaust flow, butterfly valves were installed at the top opening as a damper to close the exhaust gas flow at a certain ratio for EGR and exhaust out to the atmosphere. High temperature fused silica glass windows were installed to view and capture images of the flame and analyze the flame propagation. The burner simulation shows that MILD combustion was achieved for the oxygen mole fraction of 3-13%. The final design of the burner was fabricated and ready for the experimental validation.

Biodiesel has attracted a great deal attention recently as an alternative fuel due to increasing fuel prices and the imperative to reduce emissions. Among a wide range of biodiesel resources, microalgae are a promising alternative fuel source because of the high biomass, lipid productivity and environmentally friendliness. Microalgae is also a non-edible food, therefore, there will be no impact on the human food supply chain. In this work, petroleum diesel (PD) and biodiesel from the microalgae Chlorella protothecoides (MCP-B20) blend have been used to examine the performance and the emission of a 25.8 kW agriculture tractor engine. Two engine speeds at maximum power take off (PTO) power and torque have been selected for analysis using analysis of variance (ANOVA). The results showed that there is no significant difference between the engine performance when microalgae biodiesel blend (MCP-B20) and PD were used. However, a significant reduction in CO, CO2 and NO emissions was found when MCP-B20 was used. These outcomes give strong indication that microalgae can be successfully used in tractors as alternative fuel.
