Induction motors are widely used machines in a variety of applications as primary components for generating rotary motion. This is mainly due to their high efficiency, robustness, and ease of control. Despite their high robustness, these machines can experience failures throughout their lifespan due to various mechanical, electrical, and environmental factors. To prevent irreversible failures and all the implications and costs associated with breakdowns, various methodologies have been developed over the years. Many of these methodologies have focused on analyzing various physical quantities, either during start-up transients or during steady-state operations. This involves the use of specific techniques depending on the focus of the methodology (start-up transients or steady-state) to obtain optimal results. In this regard, it is of great importance to develop methods capable of separating and detecting the start-up transient of the motor from the steady state. This will enable the development of automatic diagnostic methodologies focused on the specific operating state of the motor. This paper proposes a methodology for the automatic detection of start-up transients in induction motors by using magnetic stray flux signals and processing by means of statistical indicators in time-sliding windows, the calculation of variances with a proposed method, and obtaining optimal values for the design parameters by using a Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO). The results obtained demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method for the start-up and steady-state regimes automatic separation, which is validated on a 0.746 kW induction motor supplied by a variable frequency drive (VFD). Induction motors (IM) play a fundamental role in the industrial sector because they are robust, efficient, and low-cost machines. Changes in the environment, installation errors, or modifications to working conditions can generate faults in induction motors. The trend on IM fault detection is focused on the design techniques and sensors capable of evaluating multiple faults with various signals using non-invasive analysis. The methodology is based on processing electric current signals by applying the short-time Fourier transform (STFT). Additionally, the computation of the mean and standard deviation of infrared thermograms is proposed as main indicators. The proposed system combines both parameters by means of Support Vector Machine and k-nearest-neighbor classifiers. The development of the diagnostic system was done with digital hardware implementations using a Xilinx PYNQ Z2 card that integrates an FPGA with a microprocessor, thus taking advantage of the acquisition and processing of digital signals and images in hardware. The proposed method has proved to be effective for the classification of healthy (HLT), misalignment (MAMT), unbalance (UNB), damaged bearing (BDF), and broken rotor bar (BRB) faults with an accuracy close to 99%. The former Tekchem Industrial Unit located in the city of Salamanca, Mexico, constitutes an environmental liability in which the presence of high levels of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) has been reported. In the present study, levels of OCPs were quantified using gas chromatography–mass spectrometry in 52 soil samples and in 88 blood samples from school-age children in the city of Salamanca. A median concentration of 70.6 ng/g (6.93–3299) was obtained for total OCPs in soil, while for the total sum of dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) the value was 49.6 ng/g (6.93–3276). In children, the median level of the total sum of OCPs was 390 ng/g lipid (7.34–14,895), and for the total sum of DDT was 175 ng/g lipid (< LOD—14,802). The OCPs that resulted in highest concentrations in soil were DDT and its metabolites, as well as aldrin and heptachlor epoxide, while in blood the highest levels corresponded to 4,4′-dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (4,4′-DDT) and its metabolites, followed by heptachlor and heptachlor epoxide. The spatial distribution of the concentrations of OCPs in soil shows that the facilities of Tekchem may be a significant potential source for the dispersion of these compounds toward the metropolitan area of Salamanca. The results obtained in the present study demonstrate the presence of OCPs in soil and in child population, providing important bases to study the problem from a broader perspective, while reiterating the importance of continuing efforts to generate resolute and precautionary measures with respect to the environmental liability of Tekchem. Online fault detection in industrial machinery, such as induction motors or their components (e.g., bearings), continues to be a priority. Most commercial equipment provides general measurements and not a diagnosis. On the other hand, commonly, research works that focus on fault detection are tested offline or over processors that do not comply with an online diagnosis. In this sense, the present work proposes a system based on a proprietary field programmable gate array (FPGA) platform with several developed intellectual property cores (IPcores) and tools. The FPGA platform together with a stray magnetic flux sensor are used for the online detection of faults in the outer race of bearings in induction motors. The integrated parts comprising the monitoring system are the stray magnetic flux triaxial sensor, several developed IPcores, an embedded processor for data processing, and a user interface where the diagnosis is visualized. The system performs the fault diagnosis through a statistical analysis as follows: First, a triaxial sensor measures the stray magnetic flux in the motor's surroundings (this flux will vary as symptoms of the fault). Second, an embedded processor in an FPGA-based proprietary board drives the developed IPcores in calculating the statistical features. Third, a set of ranges is defined for the statistical features values, and it is used to indicate the condition of the bearing in the motor. Therefore, if the value of a statistical feature belongs to a specific range, the system will return a diagnosis of whether a fault is present and, if so, the severity of the damage in the outer race. The results demonstrate that the values of the root mean square (RMS) and kurtosis, extracted from the stray magnetic field from the motor, provide a reliable diagnostic of the analyzed bearing. The results are provided online and displayed for the user through interfaces developed on the FPGA platform, such as in a liquid crystal display or through serial communication by a Bluetooth module. The platform is based on an FPGA XC6SLX45 Spartan 6 of Xilinx, and the architecture of the modules used are described through hardware description language. Due to their robustness, versatility and performance, induction motors (IMs) have been widely used in many industrial applications. Despite their characteristics, these machines are not immune to failures. In this sense, breakage of the rotor bars (BRB) is a common fault, which is mainly related to the high currents flowing along those bars during start-up. In order to reduce the stresses that could lead to the appearance of these faults, the use of soft starters is becoming usual. However, these devices introduce additional components in the current and flux signals, affecting the evolution of the fault-related patterns and so making the fault diagnosis process more difficult. This paper proposes a new method to automatically classify the rotor health state in IMs driven by soft starters. The proposed method relies on obtaining the Persistence Spectrum (PS) of the start-up stray-flux signals. To obtain a proper dataset, Data Augmentation Techniques (DAT) are applied, adding Gaussian noise to the original signals. Then, these PS images are used to train a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN), in order to automatically classify the rotor health state, depending on the severity of the fault, namely: healthy motor, one broken bar and two broken bars. This method has been validated by means of a test bench consisting of a 1.1 kW IM driven by four different soft starters coupled to a DC motor. The results confirm the reliability of the proposed method, obtaining a classification rate of 100.00% when analyzing each model separately and 99.89% when all the models are analyzed at a time. The monitoring of machine conditions is very important from the viewpoints of productivity, economic benefits, and maintenance. Several techniques have been proposed in which sensors are the key to providing relevant information to verify the system. Recently, the smart sensor concept is common, in which the sensors are integrated with a data processing unit executing dedicated algorithms used to generate meaningful information about the system in situ. Additionally, infrared thermography has gained relevance in monitoring processes, since the new infrared cameras have more resolution, smaller dimensions, reliability, functionality, and lower costs. These units were firstly used as secondary elements in the condition monitoring of machines, but thanks to modern techniques for data processing, the infrared sensors can be used to give a first, or even a direct, diagnosis in a nonintrusive way in industrial applications. Therefore, in this manuscript, the structure and development of an infrared-thermography-based smart sensor for diagnosing faults in the elements associated with induction motors, such as rolling bearings and the gearbox, is described. The smart sensor structure includes five main parts: an infrared primary sensor, a preprocessing module, an image processing module, classification of faults, and a user interface. The infrared primary sensor considers a low-cost micro thermal camera for acquiring the thermal images. The processing modules and the classification module implement the data processing algorithms into digital development boards, enabling smart system characteristics. Finally, the interface module allows the final users to require the smart sensor to perform processing actions and data visualization, with the additional feature that the diagnosis report can be provided by the system. Wound rotor induction motors (WRIM) are widely used in a vast number of high output power industrial applications due to their capability of reaching high start torques while maintaining low inrush currents. Nonetheless, these machines are very prone to require early maintenance, and the possibility of presenting rotor winding asymmetry failures is high due to their more complex rotor circuit. Although some recent works have proposed techniques that overcome the drawbacks of conventional methods, an additional research effort for the development of alternative approaches able to enhance their performance and reliability is desirable. In this work, a new method for the diagnosis of rotor asymmetries in WRIM is presented. The proposed methodology is based on a feed-forward neural network fed by suitable fault severity indicators, which rely on the maximum energy density of higher order harmonics (amplified by the failure) at strategic regions of the time-frequency maps obtained from stray flux signals under startup transient. Experimental results for three different levels of rotor asymmetries in a 11-KW WRIM prove the reliability of the enhanced proposed system in comparison to conventional approaches that only rely on the main sideband fault-harmonic amplitudes. Gearboxes are core elements in power transmission systems. Although gearboxes are reliable and high-efficiency components, the occurrence of different faults is frequent since they are often subjected to adverse operating conditions. Classical gearbox condition monitoring approaches are based on the analysis of vibration and current motor signals and rely on the identification of specific fault-related frequency patterns. In this regard, this article proposes a novel diagnosis methodology based on the analysis of stray flux signals for detecting uniform wear in the gear teeth. The proposed methodology is based on the processing of the stray flux signals through feature calculation and extraction stages that lead to a high-performance signal characterization by estimating a set of statistical time domain-based features and then reducing the dimensionally by means of the principal component analysis and linear discriminant analysis techniques. Additionally, an automatic fault diagnosis is achieved through a neural network-based classifier for the detection and identification of uniform wear in a gearbox. The obtained results prove the potential of the proposal for its incorporation in condition maintenance programs in the industry, becoming an excellent alternative to classical approaches. Magnetic flux analysis is a condition monitoring technique that is drawing the interest of many researchers and motor manufacturers. The great enhancements and reduction in the costs and dimensions of the required sensors, the development of advanced signal processing techniques that are suitable for flux data analysis, along with other inherent advantages provided by this technology, are relevant aspects that have allowed the proliferation of flux-based techniques. This article reviews the most recent scientific contributions related to the development and application of flux-based methods for the monitoring of rotating electric machines. Particularly, aspects related to the main sensors used to acquire magnetic flux signals as well as the leading signal processing and classification techniques are commented on. The discussion is focused on the diagnosis of different types of faults in the most common rotating electric machines used in industry, namely: squirrel cage induction machines, wound rotor induction machines, permanent magnet machines, and wound field synchronous machines. Tool condition monitoring (TCM) is one of the most relevant tasks during a machining process. The latest high-quality productivity standards make it essential to monitor the cutting tool wearing. Current TCM methodologies demand the installation of sensors near the working area, which in practical terms, it is not the most optimal solution since the final diagnosis can be disturbed by noisy signals and direct interferences with the machining process. This article proposes a novel noninvasive methodology based on the time–frequency analysis of the stray flux captured around the spindle-motor to detect and estimate the wearing level in cutting tools. Moreover, a new fault indicator based on this quantity is introduced through the application of the discrete wavelet transform. The results obtained are promising and demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposal to become a complementary source of information to classical approaches. Induction motors (IMs) have been extensively used for driving a wide variety of processes in several industries. Their excellent performance, capabilities and robustness explain their extensive use in several industrial applications. However, despite their robustness, IMs are susceptible to failure, with broken rotor bars (BRB) being one of the potential faults. These types of faults usually occur due to the high current amplitude flowing in the bars during the starting transient. Currently, soft-starters have been used in order to reduce the negative effects and stresses developed during the starting. However, the addition of these devices makes the fault diagnosis a complex and sometimes erratic task, since the typical fault-related patterns evolutions are usually irregular, depending on particular aspects that may change according to the technology implemented by the soft-starter. This paper proposes a novel methodology for the automatic detection of BRB in IMs under the influence of soft-starters. The proposal relies on the combined analysis of current and stray flux signals by means of suitable indicators proposed here, and their fusion through a linear discriminant analysis (LDA). Finally, the LDA output is used to train a feed-forward neural network (FFNN) to automatically detect the severity of the failure, namely: a healthy motor, one broken rotor bar, and two broken rotor bars. The proposal is validated under a testbench consisting of a kinematic chain driven by a 1.1 kW IM and using four different models of soft-starters. The effect of fatty acid oxidation on the feeding behavior of rats has been investigated. Specifically, the effects of different doses of methyl palmoxirate, an inhibitor of fatty acid oxidation, on food intake with those on in vitro and in vivo liver and muscle metabolism were compared. Results show that a reduction in hepatic fatty acid oxidation stimulates feeding behavior in rats by reducing hepatic energy production.

Male rats were studied to investigate the effects of intestinal infusion of sodium oleate. The results revealed that the rats treated with sodium oleate had a significant amount of Evans blue in their plasma 10 and 20 minutes after the plasma was injected. These were attributed the suppression of food intake due to intestinal infusion of sodium to the effects of the infusion on the intestine. The results further revealed that intraintestinal administration of sodium oleate results in an acquired taste aversion.

The reinforcing effects of carbohydrates were analyzed by utilizing gastric catheter implants in rats subjected to intragastric feeding. Rats trained on intragastric infusion feeding followed by intervals of plain water infusions exhibited increased intake when fed with starch and maltodrexin solutions compared to oil infusions. Rats ingesting oil or starch suspensions also exhibited increased intake from starch suspensions compared to oil suspension.

The mode of fat intake has been shown to determine eating behavior in rats. Herein, the effect of gastrointestinal infusion of fat on eating behavior was compared to that produced when fat is ingested. Gastric emptying was measured and used as a function of fat-induced satiety. Results showed that gastrointestinal infusion of fat produces immediate satiety as compared to ingestion. Ingestion of fat emulsion was suggested to cause increases in food intake because it is not immediately satiating.

Bearings are the elements that allow the rotatory movement in induction motors, and the fault occurrence in these elements is due to excessive working conditions. In induction motors, electrical erosion remains the most common phenomenon that damages bearings, leading to incipient faults that gradually increase to irreparable damages. Thus, condition monitoring strategies capable of assessing bearing fault severities are mandatory to overcome this critical issue. The contribution of this work lies in the proposal of a condition monitoring strategy that is focused on the analysis and identification of different fault severities of the outer race bearing fault in an induction motor. The proposed approach is supported by fusion information of different physical magnitudes and the use of Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence. An important aspect of this proposal is the calculation of a hybrid-set of statistical features that are obtained to characterize vibration and stator current signals by its processing through domain analysis, i.e., time-domain and frequency-domain; also, the fusion of information of both signals by means of the Linear Discriminant Analysis is important due to the most discriminative and meaningful information is retained resulting in a high-performance condition characterization. Besides, a Neural Network-based classifier allows validating the effectiveness of fusion information from different physical magnitudes to face the diagnosis of multiple fault severities that appear in the bearing outer race. The method is validated under an experimental data set that includes information related to a healthy condition and five different severities that appear in the outer race of bearings. Intragastric carbohydrate infusion, rather than an arbitrary nonsweet flavor, is effective in conditioning an increase in fluid intake. The total fluid intake, using intergastric method, exceeds the animal's body weight. The infusions increase fluid intake by a mean vlaue of 70%. The continuance of carbohydrate intake for 24 hours after the discontinuance of glucose infusion reveals generative conditioning.

Two distinct methods, zinc sulfate instillation and olfactory bulbectomy, aid the analysis of the function of olfaction in making rats prefer solutions and dilute nutrient suspensions. Both nonolfactory and olfactory cues regulate oil and starch preference, which is decreased by prevention of olfaction.

CFH and HTRA1 are pivotal genes driving increased risk for age-related macular degeneration (AMD) among several populations. Here, we performed a hospital-based case-control study to evaluate the effects of three single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) among Hispanics from Mexico. 122 cases and 249 controls were genotyped using Taqman probes. Experienced ophthalmologists diagnosed AMD following the American Association of Ophthalmology guidelines. We studied CFH (rs1329428, rs203687) and HTRA1 (rs11200638) SNPs thoroughly by logistic regression models (assuming different modes of inheritance) and machine learning-based methods (ML). HTRA1 rs11200638 is the most significant polymorphism associated with AMD in our studied population. In a multivariate regression model adjusted for clinically and statistically meaningful covariates, the A/G and A/A genotypes increased the odds of disease by a factor of 2.32 and 7.81, respectively (P <.05) suggesting a multiplicative effect of the polymorphic A allele. Furthermore, this observation remains statistically meaningful in the allelic, dominant, and recessive models, and ML algorithms. When stratifying by phenotype, this polymorphism was significantly associated with increased odds for geographic atrophy (GA) in a recessive mode of inheritance (12.4, p <.05). In sum, this work supports a strong association between HTRA1 genetic variants and AMD in Hispanics from Mexico, especially with GA. In the induction motor predictive maintenance area, there is a continuous search for new techniques and methods that can provide additional information for a more reliable determination of the motor condition. In this context, the analysis of the stray flux has drawn the interest of many researchers. The simplicity, low cost and potential of this technique makes it attractive for complementing the diagnosis provided by other well-established methods. More specifically, the study of this quantity under the starting has been recently proposed as a valuable tool for the diagnosis of certain electromechanical faults. Despite this fact, the research in this approach is still incipient and the employed signal processing tools must be still optimized for a better visualization of the fault components. Moreover, the development of advanced algorithms that enable the automatic identification of the resulting transient patterns is another crucial target within this area. This article presents an advanced algorithm based on the combined application of MUSIC and neural networks that enables the automatic identification of the time-frequency patterns created by the stray flux fault components under starting as well as the subsequent determination of the fault severity level. Two faults are considered in the work: rotor problems and misalignments. Also, different positions of the external coil sensor are studied. Over recent decades, the detection of faults in induction motors (IMs) has been mainly focused in cage motors due to their extensive use. However, in recent years, wound-rotor motors have received special attention because of their broad use as generators in wind turbine units, as well as in some large power applications in industrial plants. Some classical approaches perform the detection of certain faults based on the fast Fourier transform analysis of the steady state current (motor current signature analysis); they have been lately complemented with new transient time–frequency-based techniques to avoid false alarms. Nonetheless, there is still a need to improve the already existing methods to overcome some of their remaining drawbacks and increase the reliability of the diagnostic. In this regard, emergent technologies are being explored, such as the analysis of stray flux at the vicinity of the motor, which has been proven to be a promising option to diagnose the motor condition. Recently, this technique has been applied to detect broken rotor bar failures and misalignments in cage motors, offering the advantage of being a noninvasive tool with simple implementation and even avoiding some drawbacks of well-established tools. However, the application of these techniques to wound rotor IMs (WRIMs) has not been studied. This article explores the analysis of the external magnetic field under the starting to detect rotor winding asymmetry defects in WRIMs by using advanced signal processing techniques. Cytosine photodimer formation is mediated along the triplet and singlet manifold by a singlet-triplet crossing and by a conical intersection. The results have helped in understanding the potential photogenotoxicity of endogenous and exogenous compounds via triplet-triplet sensitization, with a lower bound for cytosine oligonucleotides and have supported the primary role of triplet excited states in the photochemistry of DNA.

Electric motors have been widely used as fundamental elements for driving kinematic chains on mechatronic systems, which are very important components for the proper operation of several industrial applications. Although electric motors are very robust and efficient machines, they are prone to suffer from different faults. One of the most frequent causes of failure is due to a degradation on the bearings. This fault has commonly been diagnosed at advanced stages by means of vibration and current signals. Since low-amplitude fault-related signals are typically obtained, the diagnosis of faults at incipient stages turns out to be a challenging task. In this context, it is desired to develop non-invasive techniques able to diagnose bearing faults at early stages, enabling to achieve adequate maintenance actions. This paper presents a non-invasive gradual wear diagnosis method for bearing outer-race faults. The proposal relies on the application of a linear discriminant analysis (LDA) to statistical and Katz's fractal dimension features obtained from stray flux signals, and then an automatic classification is performed by means of a feed-forward neural network (FFNN). The results obtained demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed method, which is validated on a kinematic chain (composed by a 0.746 KW induction motor, a belt and pulleys transmission system and an alternator as a load) under several operation conditions: healthy condition, 1 mm, 2 mm, 3 mm, 4 mm, and 5 mm hole diameter on the bearing outer race, and 60 Hz, 50 Hz, 15 Hz and 5 Hz power supply frequencies [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
