Evolutionary studies have unequivocally proven the transition of living organisms from water to land. Consequently, it can be deduced that locomotion strategies must have evolved from one environment to the other. However, the mechanism by which this transition happened and its implications on bio-mechanical studies and robotics research have not been explored in detail. This paper presents a unifying control strategy for locomotion in varying environments based on the principle of ‘learning to stop’. Using a common reinforcement learning framework, deep deterministic policy gradient, we show that our proposed learning strategy facilitates a fast and safe methodology for transferring learned controllers from the facile water environment to the harsh land environment. Our results not only propose a plausible mechanism for safe and quick transition of locomotion strategies from a water to land environment but also provide a novel alternative for safer and faster training of robots.

We report on the effects of light depolarization induced by sharp metallic tips in Tip-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (TERS). Experiments on Si(001) and GaAs(001) crystals show that the excitation field depolarization induces a selective enhancement of specific Raman modes, depending on their Raman tensor symmetry. A complete polarization analysis of the light backscattered from the tip confirms the TERS findings. The spatial confinement of the depolarization field is studied and its dependence on the excitation wavelength and power are explored.

In Tip-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (TERS) a metal (or metallized) sharp tip is used to enhance the electromagnetic field by a localized surface-plasmon excitation. Two different modes ? atomic force mode (AFM) and scanning tunneling mode (STM) ? together with their respective types of probe tips are used in TERS experiments. We have compared the efficiency in enhancing the Raman signal on a thin dye layer for metal-coated AFM tips as well as for electrochemically etched metal STM tips. A much higher enhancement factor and better reproducibility were found when using STM tips. The very different performance is mainly attributed to the more efficient plasmonic excitation when using bulk-metal tips and possibly to the morphological differences in the tip and apex shapes existing between the two tip types. Life on our planet likely evolved in the ocean, and thus exo-oceans are key habitats to search for extraterrestrial life. We conducted a data-driven bibliographic survey on the astrobiology literature to identify emerging research trends with marine science for future synergies in the exploration for extraterrestrial life in exo-oceans. Based on search queries, we identified 2592 published items since 1963. The current literature falls into three major groups of terms focusing on (1) the search for life on Mars, (2) astrobiology within our Solar System with reference to icy moons and their exo-oceans, and (3) astronomical and biological parameters for planetary habitability. We also identified that the most prominent research keywords form three key-groups focusing on (1) using terrestrial environments as proxies for Martian environments, centred on extremophiles and biosignatures, (2) habitable zones outside of "Goldilocks" orbital ranges, centred on ice planets, and (3) the atmosphere, magnetic field, and geology in relation to planets' habitable conditions, centred on water-based oceans., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflicts of interest.

Introduction: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a global health problem. In the public sector of Bahía Blanca, CRC screening is opportunistic, through the request of fecal occult blood test (FOBT). The objective of this study is to describe access to CRC screening for the population with exclusive public coverage residing in the programmatic area 2 of the city between 2019 and 2021, and to identify the barriers and facilitators that determine it., Methods: The annual and cumulative usage rate was estimated based on the number of patients who requested FOBT. The barriers and facilitators were studied through 41 semi-structured individual interviews to healthcare staff from the area, the Municipal Hospital, Health Secretariat and users/non-users of the system., Results: The cumulative usage rate of FOBT during the period was less than 5%. Among the perceived barriers to screening, we found: the difficulties in accessing more complex studies for patients with positive FOBT, the lack of population awareness and perception of CRC as a health problem, the low adherence of professionals to guidelines. The territoriality and link of health centers with the population, as well as the willingness of users and professionals to incorporate screening, emerge as facilitators., Conclusion: The identification of barriers and facilitators will allow the design of context-adapted strategies that will strengthen screening in the future.

Introduction: Coverage for colorectal cancer screening in Argentina is very low. The objective of this review is to assess and synthesize the evidence on the effectiveness of strategies aimed at increasing adherence to colorectal cancer screening among healthcare personnel and the general population at average risk., Methods: A review of systematic reviews (SRs) that evaluated the effectiveness of these strategies was conducted. Searches were performed in electronic databases, meta-search engines, the Cochrane Library, and through manual searching. Eligibility and inclusion criteria were applied, with assessment of the quality of the SRs using AMSTAR II and the certainty of evidence using the GRADE approach. Thematic synthesis was conducted based on the taxonomy of strategies proposed by Dougherty (patient/community-targeted, professionaltargeted, and other types of strategies)., Results: A total of 635 studies were identified, with 36 deemed eligible and 11 excluded due to insufficient quality, resulting in the inclusion of 10 SRs. A multiplicity of strategies with varying effectiveness were identified, with the majority targeting the population. Among these, education, self-testing with specimen collection at specific locations, and reminders stood out. For professionals, only education and reminders showed effectiveness. Combined strategies demonstrated greater effectiveness than isolated strategies., Conclusions: There is more evidence on strategies targeting the population than professionals. Combined strategies showed greater effectiveness, highlighting the need to explore barriers in both the population and professionals in each specific context in order to prioritize and combine those that have proven effective and would have a greater impact.

Nowadays, there is a growing awareness on the social and economic importance of the ocean. In this context, being able to carry out a diverse range of operations underwater is of paramount importance for many industrial sectors as well as for marine science and to enforce restoration and mitigation actions. Underwater robots allowed us to venture deeper and for longer time into the remote and hostile marine environment. However, traditional design concepts such as propeller driven remotely operated vehicles, autonomous underwater vehicles, or tracked benthic crawlers, present intrinsic limitations, especially when a close interaction with the environment is required. An increasing number of researchers are proposing legged robots as a bioinspired alternative to traditional designs, capable of yielding versatile multi-terrain locomotion, high stability, and low environmental disturbance. In this work, we aim at presenting the new field of underwater legged robotics in an organic way, discussing the prototypes in the state-of-the-art and highlighting technological and scientific challenges for the future. First, we will briefly recap the latest developments in traditional underwater robotics from which several technological solutions can be adapted, and on which the benchmarking of this new field should be set. Second, we will the retrace the evolution of terrestrial legged robotics, pinpointing the main achievements of the field. Third, we will report a complete state of the art on underwater legged robots focusing on the innovations with respect to the interaction with the environment, sensing and actuation, modelling and control, and autonomy and navigation. Finally, we will thoroughly discuss the reviewed literature by comparing traditional and legged underwater robots, highlighting interesting research opportunities, and presenting use case scenarios derived from marine science applications., (© 2023 IOP Publishing Ltd.)

Underwater robots emit sound during operations which can deteriorate the quality of acoustic data recorded by on-board sensors or disturb marine fauna during in vivo observations. Notwithstanding this, there have only been a few attempts at characterizing the acoustic emissions of underwater robots in the literature, and the datasheets of commercially available devices do not report information on this topic. This work has a twofold goal. First, we identified a setup consisting of a camera directly mounted on the robot structure to acquire the acoustic data and two indicators (i.e., spectral roll-off point and noise introduced to the environment) to provide a simple and intuitive characterization of the acoustic emissions of underwater robots carrying out specific maneuvers in specific environments. Second, we performed the proposed analysis on three underwater robots belonging to the classes of remotely operated vehicles and underwater legged robots. Our results showed how the legged device produced a clearly different signature compared to remotely operated vehicles which can be an advantage in operations that require low acoustic disturbance. Finally, we argue that the proposed indicators, obtained through a standardized procedure, may be a useful addition to datasheets of existing underwater robots.

Robots have the potential to assist and complement humans in the study and exploration of extreme and hostile environments. For example, valuable scientific data have been collected with the aid of propeller-driven autonomous and remotely operated vehicles in underwater operations. However, because of their nature as swimmers, such robots are limited when closer interaction with the environment is required. Here, we report a bioinspired underwater legged robot, called SILVER2, that implements locomotion modalities inspired by benthic animals (organisms that harness the interaction with the seabed to move; for example, octopi and crabs). Our robot can traverse irregular terrains, interact delicately with the environment, approach targets safely and precisely, and hold position passively and silently. Electrochemical exfoliation is one of the most promising methods for scalable production of graphene. However, limited understanding of its Raman spectrum as well as lack of measurement standards for graphene strongly limit its industrial applications. In this work, we show a systematic study of the Raman spectrum of electrochemically exfoliated graphene, produced using different electrolytes and types of solvents in varying amounts. We demonstrate that no information on the thickness can be extracted from the shape of the 2D peak as this type of graphene is defective. Furthermore, the number of defects and the uniformity of the samples strongly depend on the experimental conditions, including postprocessing. Under specific conditions, the formation of short conductive trans-polyacetylene chains has been observed. Our Raman analysis provides guidance for the community on how to get information on defects coming from electrolyte, temperature, and other experimental conditions, by making Raman spectroscopy a powerful metrology tool.

The Raman spectral features from spinal cord tissue sections of transgenic, ALS model mice and non-transgenic mice were compared using 457 nm excitation line, profiting from the favourable signal intensity obtained in the molecular fingerprint region at this wavelength. Transverse sections from four SOD1G93A mice at 75 days and from two at 90 days after birth were analysed and compared with sections of similarly aged control mice. The spectra acquired within the grey matter of tissue sections from the diseased mice is markedly different from the grey matter signature of healthy mice. In particular, we observe an intensity increase in the spectral windows 450-650 cm -1 and 1050-1200 cm -1 , accompanied by an intensity decrease in the lipid contributions at ~1660 cm -1 , ~1440 cm -1 and ~1300 cm -1 . Axons demyelination, loss of lipid structural order and the proliferation and aggregation of branched proteoglycans are related to the observed spectral modifications. Furthermore, the grey and white matter components of the spinal cord sections could also be spectrally distinguished, based on the relative intensity of characteristic lipid and protein bands. Raman spectra acquired from the white matter regions of the SOD1G93A mice closely resembles those from control mice.

The use of phosphonate ligands to modify the nanoparticle (NPs) surface has attracted a strong interest in the last years for the design of highly functional hybrid materials. Here, we applied a methodology to synthesize bisphosphonates having functionalized PEG side chains with a specific length in order to design a novel class of hybrid nanomaterials composed by tetraphosphonate-complex-gold COOH-terminated PEG-coated NPs (Bis-PO-PEG-AuNPs). The synthetic approach consist in three steps: (1) Complexation between new phosphonate ligands (Bis PO) and tetrachloroauric acid (HAuCl 4 ) to form gold clusters; (2) adsorption of COOH-terminated PEG molecules (PEG) onto Bis PO-Au complex; (3) reduction of metal ions in that vicinity, growth of gold particles and colloidal stabilization. Asthma is a heterogeneous chronic inflammatory disorder in which different endotypes contribute to define clinical inflammatory phenotypes. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are a group of minute, endogenous 22-25 nt RNA elements that join to particular mRNAs to reduce translation and increase messenger RNA degradation. miRNAs operate in post-transcriptional control and regulate physiological and pathological processes in several illnesses. The purpose of this work is to review and discuss the current knowledge about the function of miRNAs in asthma, focusing particularly on their biological properties, pathophysiologic actions, and possible use as markers and treatments for asthma.

Background: One of the main severe asthma phenotypes is severe eosinophilic or eosinophilic refractory asthma for which novel biologic agents are emerging as therapeutic options. In this context, blood eosinophil counts are one of the most reliable biomarkers., Objective: To evaluate the performance of a point-of-care peripheral blood counter in a patients with severe asthma., Methods: The blood eosinophil counts of 76 patients with severe asthma were evaluated by point-of-care and standard analyzers., Results: A significant correlation between blood eosinophils assessed by the 2 devices was found (R 2  = 0.854, P < .001); similar correlations were found also for white blood cells, neutrophils, and lymphocytes. The point-of-care device had the ability to predict blood eosinophil cutoffs used to select patients for biologic treatments for severe eosinophilic asthma and the ELEN index, a composite score useful to predict sputum eosinophilia., Conclusion: The results of our study contribute to the validation of a point-of-care device to assess blood eosinophils and open the possibility of using this device for the management of severe asthma management., (Copyright © 2017 American College of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology. Soft robotics and its related technologies enable robot abilities in several robotics domains including, but not exclusively related to, manipulation, manufacturing, human-robot interaction and locomotion. Although field applications have emerged for soft manipulation and human-robot interaction, mobile soft robots appear to remain in the research stage, involving the somehow conflictual goals of having a deformable body and exerting forces on the environment to achieve locomotion. Both surface photovoltage and photocurrent enable to assess the effect of visible light illumination on the electrical behavior of a solar cell. We report on photovoltage and photocurrent measurements with nanometer scale resolution performed on the cross section of an epitaxial crystalline silicon solar cell, using respectively Kelvin probe force microscopy and conducting probe atomic force microscopy. Even though two different setups are used, the scans were performed on locations within 100-μm distance in order to compare data from the same area and provide a consistent interpretation. In both measurements, modifications under illumination are observed in accordance with the theory of PIN junctions. Moreover, an unintentional doping during the deposition of the epitaxial silicon intrinsic layer in the solar cell is suggested from the comparison between photovoltage and photocurrent measurements.

Background: Anisakis simplex can elicit allergic reactions when ingested in raw or marinated fish. The prevalence of A simplex hypersensitivity and allergy in Sicily (Italy), an area where the consumption of raw or marinated fish is very common, has not been investigated thus far., Objective: To investigate the prevalence of A simplex sensitization and its clinical relevance in a large group of unselected patients., Methods: All consecutive patients referred to the authors' allergy clinic during a 22 month-period were included in the study, evaluated for sensitization to A simplex and other allergens depending on their clinical history, and investigated for allergic symptoms after the ingestion of raw or marinated fish., Results: Of 3,419 patients screened, 527 (15.4%) were sensitized to A simplex and 29 of these (5.5% of sensitized patients) had a history of A simplex allergy. Approximately 30% of patients had mono-sensitization to A simplex. Co-sensitization to house dust mites or molds yielded an odds ratio of 1.98 or 3.18, respectively, for allergy to A simplex., Conclusion: A high prevalence of A simplex sensitization in a large proportion of patients with mono-sensitization was found, confirming that eating habits influence sensitization to this nematode. Allergic symptoms from A simplex ingestion in raw or marinated fish were quite frequent, with symptoms ranging from oral allergy syndrome to anaphylaxis. Patients sensitized to A simplex were more prone to have allergic symptoms when they had co-sensitization to house dust mites or molds, suggesting possible cross-reactive but clinically relevant allergens between these allergenic sources., (Copyright © 2016. Growing self-assembled silicon nanowires (SiNWs) into precise locations represents a critical capability to scale up SiNW-based functionalities. We here report a novel epitaxy growth phenomenon and strategy to fabricate orderly arrays of self-aligned in-plane SiNWs on Si(100) substrates following exactly the underlying crystallographic orientations. We observe also a rich set of distinctive growth dynamics/modes that lead to remarkably different morphologies of epitaxially grown SiNWs/or grains under variant growth balance conditions. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy cross-section analysis confirms a coherent epitaxy (or partial epitaxy) interface between the in-plane SiNWs and the Si(100) substrate, while conductive atomic force microscopy characterization reveals that electrically rectifying p-n junctions are formed between the p-type doped in-plane SiNWs and the n-type c-Si(100) substrate. This in-plane epitaxy growth could provide an effective means to define nanoscale junction and doping profiles, providing a basis for exploring novel nanoelectronics.

A billion-fold increase in the Raman signal over conventional tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy/microscopy (TERS) is reported. It is achieved by introducing a stimulating beam confocal with the pump beam into a conventional TERS setup. A stimulated TERS spectrum, closely corresponding to its spontaneous TERS counterpart, is obtained by plotting the signal intensity of the strongest Raman peak of an azobenzene thiol self-assembled monolayer versus the stimulating laser frequency. The stimulated TERS image of azobenzene thiol molecules grafted onto Au ⟨111⟩ clearly shows the surface distribution of the molecules, whereas, when compared to the simultaneously recorded surface topography, it presents an image contrast of different nature. The experimentally obtained stimulated gain is estimated at 1.0 × 10(9), which is in reasonable agreement with the theoretically predicted value. In addition to the signal increase, the signal-to-noise ratio was 3 orders of magnitude higher than in conventional spontaneous TERS. The proposed stimulated TERS technique offers the possibility for a substantially faster imaging of the surface with respect to normal TERS.

Mixed thiol self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) presenting methyl and azobenzene head groups were prepared by chemical substitution from the original single-component n-decanethiol or [4-(phenylazo)phenoxy]hexane-1-thiol SAMs on polycrystalline gold substrates. Static contact-angle measurements were carried out to confirm a change in the hydrophobicity of the functionalized surfaces following the exchange reaction. The mixed SAMs presented contact-angle values between those of the more hydrophobic n-decanethiol and the more hydrophilic [4-(phenylazo)phenoxy]hexane-1-thiol single-component SAMs. By means of tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (TERS) mapping experiments, it was possible to highlight that molecular replacement takes place easily and first at grain boundaries: for two different mixed SAM compositions, TERS point-by-point maps with <50 nm step sizes showed different spectral signatures in correspondence to the grain boundaries. Silicon nanowires (SiNWs) grown on low-cost substrates provide an ideal framework for the monolithic fabrication of radial junction photovoltaics. However, the quality of junction formation over a random matrix of SiNWs, fabricated via a vapor-liquid-solid (VLS) mechanism, has never been assessed in a realistic context. To address this, we probe the current response of individual radial junction solar cells under electron-beam and optical-beam excitations. Excellent current generation from the radial junction units, compared to their planar counterparts, has been recorded, indicating a high junction quality and effective doping in the ultra-thin SiNWs with diameters thinner than 20 nm. Interestingly, we found that the formation of radial junctions by plasma deposition can be quite robust against geometrical disorder and even the crossings of neighboring cell units. These results provide a strong support to the feasibility of building high-quality radial junction solar cells over high-throughput VLS-grown SiNWs on low-cost substrates.

Patterned silicon on insulator structures representing evenly spaced parallel 15 nm-thick nanostripes exhibit an enhanced Raman scattering response when excited in the visible range in an oblique incidence backscattering configuration. The enhancement phenomenon in two structures having different stripe widths, 200 and 50 nm, is investigated at various sample azimuthal orientations, excitation radiation polarizations as well as laser wavelengths and is shown to be of resonant nature. The enhanced Raman response of the patterned structures is attributed to the presence of Mie resonances, essentially resulting in the enhancement of the internal electric field within the nanostripes. It is quantitatively described in terms of the spheroid particle model extended beyond the electrostatic limit to include field retardation effects that are shown to be responsible for the resonant behaviour in the visible range.

Silicon nanowires (SiNWs) are becoming a popular choice to develop a new generation of radial junction solar cells. We here explore a bismuth- (Bi-) catalyzed growth and doping of SiNWs, via vapor-liquid-solid (VLS) mode, to fabricate amorphous Si radial n-i-p junction solar cells in a one-pump-down and low-temperature process in a single chamber plasma deposition system. We provide the first evidence that catalyst doping in the SiNW cores, caused by incorporating Bi catalyst atoms as n-type dopant, can be utilized to fabricate radial junction solar cells, with a record open circuit voltage of V(oc) = 0.76 V and an enhanced light trapping effect that boosts the short circuit current to J(sc) = 11.23 mA/cm(2). More importantly, this bi-catalyzed SiNW growth and doping strategy exempts the use of extremely toxic phosphine gas, leading to significant procedure simplification and cost reduction for building radial junction thin film solar cells.

Objective: Non-invasive testing often does not identify coronary artery disease (CAD) in diabetic subjects. This study was designed in order to examine the prevalence of CAD in a cohort of asymptomatic type 2 diabetic patients at high cardiovascular risk and negative nuclear imaging, using multi-slice computed tomography (MSCT) angiography., Methods: In total, 770 type 2 diabetic patients were screened from January 2008 through July 2010. Of these, 132 Caucasians with diabetic nephropathy and asymptomatic for angina were eligible for a cross-sectional study. Patients underwent MSCT after ischaemia was excluded by myocardial Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT) at rest and after dynamic exercise. When obstructive plaques were found (≥ 50% lumen narrowing), patients were sent to conventional coronary angiography (CCA)., Results: Six subjects were not included in the analysis because of motion artefacts. MSCT was positive for CAD in 114 patients (90%). Within patients with positive MSCT, 60 (48% of all) showed one or more obstructive plaques. CCA confirmed significant stenosis (≥ 50%) in 48 of these 60 patients (80%). Some 21 (35%) showed stenosis ≥ 75% and were submitted to the revascularisation procedure., Conclusion: MSCT seems to better identify CAD than myocardial SPECT in asymptomatic patients with type 2 diabetes and diabetic nephropathy.

The nature of the lowest energy optical transition for the complexes (η(6)-naphthalene)Cr(CO)(3) and (η(6)-phenanthrene)Cr(CO)(3) in the solid state has been investigated by Raman spectroscopy using a range of different excitation wavelengths progressively approaching the resonant condition. Examination of the resonantly enhanced Raman modes confirms that the first absorption is attributed predominantly to a metal-to-arene charge transfer transition for both complexes. A notable difference in the photochemistry of the two complexes was observed. In the case of the phenanthrene complex, population of the lowest energy excited state leads to a photochemical process which resulted in the loss of the arene ligand and formation of Cr(CO)(6).

6-[4-(phenylazo)phenoxy]hexane-1-thiol self-assembled monolayers deposited on a gold surface form domain-like structures possessing a high degree of order with virtually all the molecules being identically oriented with respect to the surface plane. We show that, by using polarized near-field Raman spectroscopy, it is possible to derive the Raman scattering tensor of the ordered layer and consequently, the in-plane molecular orientation at the individual domain level. More generally, this study extends the application domain of the near-field Raman scattering selection rules from crystals to ordered organic structures.

We report an in-plane solid-liquid-solid (IPSLS) mode for obtaining self-avoiding lateral silicon nanowires (SiNW) in a reacting-gas-free annealing process, where the growth of SiNWs is guided by liquid indium drops that transform the surrounding a-SiratioH matrix into crystalline SiNWs. The SiNWs can be approximately mm long, with the smallest diameter down to approximately 22 nm. A high growth rate of >10(2) nm/s and rich evolution dynamics are revealed in a real-time in situ scanning electron microscopy observation. A qualitative growth model is proposed to account for the major features of this IPSLS SiNW growth mode.

We here propose an all-in situ method for growing vapor-liquid-solid (VLS) silicon nanowires (SiNWs) directly on SnO(2) substrates in a plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition system. The tin catalysts are formed by a well-controlled H(2) plasma treatment of the SnO(2) layer. The lowest temperature for the tin-catalyzed VLS SiNWs growth in a silane plasma is ∼250 °C. The effects of substrate temperature and H(2) dilution of silane on the morphology and compositional evolution of the SiNWs were systematically investigated. The catalyst content in the SiNWs can be effectively controlled by the deposition temperature. Moreover, enhanced absorption (down to ∼1.1 eV) is achieved due to the strong light trapping and anti-reflection effects in the straight and long tapered SiNWs.

The Shallow Radar (SHARAD) on the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter has imaged the internal stratigraphy of the north polar layered deposits of Mars. Radar reflections within the deposits reveal a laterally continuous deposition of layers, which typically consist of four packets of finely spaced reflectors separated by homogeneous interpacket regions of nearly pure ice. The packet/interpacket structure can be explained by approximately million-year periodicities in Mars' obliquity or orbital eccentricity. The observed approximately 100-meter maximum deflection of the underlying substrate in response to the ice load implies that the present-day thickness of an equilibrium elastic lithosphere is greater than 300 kilometers. Alternatively, the response to the load may be in a transient state controlled by mantle viscosity. Both scenarios probably require that Mars has a subchondritic abundance of heat-producing elements.

We used scanning tunneling microscopy-tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (STM-TERS) to study the polarization properties of near-field scattering on a crystalline material as well as on a dye adsorbate. The measurements on a (111)-oriented c-Si sample were found to be well described by a recently proposed model for TERS and allowed for a characterization of the polarization properties of the tips used. The tip enhancement was stronger for excitation radiation having a field component along the tip axis for both types of samples. A non-negligible enhancement was also found for the field component perpendicular to the tip axis.

The equatorial Medusae Fossae Formation (MFF) is enigmatic and perhaps among the youngest geologic deposits on Mars. They are thought to be composed of volcanic ash, eolian sediments, or an ice-rich material analogous to polar layered deposits. The Mars Advanced Radar for Subsurface and Ionospheric Sounding (MARSIS) instrument aboard the Mars Express Spacecraft has detected nadir echoes offset in time-delay from the surface return in orbits over MFF material. These echoes are interpreted to be from the subsurface interface between the MFF material and the underlying terrain. The delay time between the MFF surface and subsurface echoes is consistent with massive deposits emplaced on generally planar lowlands materials with a real dielectric constant of approximately 2.9 +/- 0.4. The real dielectric constant and the estimated dielectric losses are consistent with a substantial component of water ice. However, an anomalously low-density, ice-poor material cannot be ruled out. If ice-rich, the MFF must have a higher percentage of dust and sand than polar layered deposits. The volume of water in an ice-rich MFF deposit would be comparable to that of the south polar layered deposits.

Mars' polar regions are covered with ice-rich layered deposits that potentially contain a record of climate variations. The sounding radar SHARAD on the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter mapped detailed subsurface stratigraphy in the Promethei Lingula region of the south polar plateau, Planum Australe. Radar reflections interpreted as layers are correlated across adjacent orbits and are continuous for up to 150 kilometers along spacecraft orbital tracks. The reflectors are often separated into discrete reflector sequences, and strong echoes are seen as deep as 1 kilometer. In some cases, the sequences are dipping with respect to each other, suggesting an interdepositional period of erosion. In Australe Sulci, layers are exhumed, indicating recent erosion.

Objective: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most frequent cause of hospitalization for arrhythmias. The aim of our study was to evaluate the prevalence of thyroid dysfunction in patients with paroxysmal AF without any cardiomyopathy., Methods: Two hundred sixty eight patients (164 women and 104 men, mean age 64.9+/-16.9 years) affected by paroxysmal AF entered the present study. Patients underwent routine laboratory examinations with estimation of thyroid hormones levels, standard electrocardiogram (ECG) and transthoracic echocardiography., Results: Thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) levels were low (<0.3 mU/L) in 168 patients (62.7%) and high (>5 mU/L) in 39 patients (14.9%); 76 patients (28.4%) had high free triiodothyronine (FT3) levels (>4.3 pg/ml) and 91 patients (34.3%) had high free thyroxine (FT4) levels (>1.7 ng/dl); 60 patients (22.4%) had low FT3 levels (<2 pg/ml) and 24 patients (9%) had low FT4 levels (<0.9 ng/dl). Overall, 76.2% of patients with hyperthyroidism were women. Hyperthyroidism was considered subclinical in 68 (40.5%) patients with low SH concentrations., Conclusions: Thyroid dysfunctions have a high prevalence in AF patients and hyperthyroidism is the most common disorder. Hyperthyroidism in AF patients more often occurs in women than in men. Any minimal but persistent modification of circulating thyroid hormone levels can favor episodes of AF; it can be useful to thoroughly assess thyroid function in all patients suffering from AF.

The ice-rich south polar layered deposits of Mars were probed with the Mars Advanced Radar for Subsurface and Ionospheric Sounding on the Mars Express orbiter. The radar signals penetrate deep into the deposits (more than 3.7 kilometers). For most of the area, a reflection is detected at a time delay that is consistent with an interface between the deposits and the substrate. The reflected power from this interface indicates minimal attenuation of the signal, suggesting a composition of nearly pure water ice. Maps were generated of the topography of the basal interface and the thickness of the layered deposits. A set of buried depressions is seen within 300 kilometers of the pole. The thickness map shows an asymmetric distribution of the deposits and regions of anomalous thickness. The total volume is estimated to be 1.6 x 10(6) cubic kilometers, which is equivalent to a global water layer approximately 11 meters thick.

The surface of Saturn's haze-shrouded moon Titan has long been proposed to have oceans or lakes, on the basis of the stability of liquid methane at the surface. Initial visible and radar imaging failed to find any evidence of an ocean, although abundant evidence was found that flowing liquids have existed on the surface. Here we provide definitive evidence for the presence of lakes on the surface of Titan, obtained during the Cassini Radar flyby of Titan on 22 July 2006 (T16). The radar imaging polewards of 70 degrees north shows more than 75 circular to irregular radar-dark patches, in a region where liquid methane and ethane are expected to be abundant and stable on the surface. The radar-dark patches are interpreted as lakes on the basis of their very low radar reflectivity and morphological similarities to lakes, including associated channels and location in topographic depressions. Some of the lakes do not completely fill the depressions in which they lie, and apparently dry depressions are present. We interpret this to indicate that lakes are present in a number of states, including partly dry and liquid-filled. These northern-hemisphere lakes constitute the strongest evidence yet that a condensable-liquid hydrological cycle is active in Titan's surface and atmosphere, in which the lakes are filled through rainfall and/or intersection with the subsurface 'liquid methane' table.

A hemispheric dichotomy on Mars is marked by the sharp contrast between the sparsely cratered northern lowland plains and the heavily cratered southern highlands. Mechanisms proposed to remove ancient crust or form younger lowland crust include one or more giant impacts, subcrustal transport by mantle convection, the generation of thinner crust by plate tectonics, and mantle overturn following solidification of an early magma ocean. The age of the northern lowland crust is a significant constraint on these models. The Mars Advanced Radar for Subsurface and Ionospheric Sounding (MARSIS) instrument on the European Space Agency's Mars Express spacecraft is providing new constraints on the martian subsurface. Here we show evidence of buried impact basins ranging in diameter from about 130 km to 470 km found over approximately 14 per cent of the northern lowlands. The number of detected buried basins >200 km in diameter indicates that the lowland crust is ancient, dating back to the Early Noachian epoch. This crater density is a lower limit because of the likelihood that not all buried basins in the area surveyed by MARSIS have been detected. An Early Noachian age for the lowland crust has been previously suggested on the basis of a large number of quasi-circular topographic depressions interpreted to be evidence of buried basins. Only a few of these depressions in the area surveyed by MARSIS, however, correlate with the detected subsurface echoes. On the basis of the MARSIS data, we conclude that the northern lowland crust is at least as old as the oldest exposed highland crust. This suggests that the crustal dichotomy formed early in the geologic evolution of Mars.

Cassini's Titan Radar Mapper imaged the surface of Saturn's moon Titan on its February 2005 fly-by (denoted T3), collecting high-resolution synthetic-aperture radar and larger-scale radiometry and scatterometry data. These data provide the first definitive identification of impact craters on the surface of Titan, networks of fluvial channels and surficial dark streaks that may be longitudinal dunes. Here we describe this great diversity of landforms. We conclude that much of the surface thus far imaged by radar of the haze-shrouded Titan is very young, with persistent geologic activity.

The most recent Cassini RADAR images of Titan show widespread regions (up to 1500 kilometers by 200 kilometers) of near-parallel radar-dark linear features that appear to be seas of longitudinal dunes similar to those seen in the Namib desert on Earth. The Ku-band (2.17-centimeter wavelength) images show approximately 100-meter ridges consistent with duneforms and reveal flow interactions with underlying hills. The distribution and orientation of the dunes support a model of fluctuating surface winds of approximately 0.5 meter per second resulting from the combination of an eastward flow with a variable tidal wind. The existence of dunes also requires geological processes that create sand-sized (100- to 300-micrometer) particulates and a lack of persistent equatorial surface liquids to act as sand traps.

We report the first radar soundings of the ionosphere of Mars with the MARSIS (Mars Advanced Radar for Subsurface and Ionosphere Sounding) instrument on board the orbiting Mars Express spacecraft. Several types of ionospheric echoes are observed, ranging from vertical echoes caused by specular reflection from the horizontally stratified ionosphere to a wide variety of oblique and diffuse echoes. The oblique echoes are believed to arise mainly from ionospheric structures associated with the complex crustal magnetic fields of Mars. Echoes at the electron plasma frequency and the cyclotron period also provide measurements of the local electron density and magnetic field strength.

The martian subsurface has been probed to kilometer depths by the Mars Advanced Radar for Subsurface and Ionospheric Sounding instrument aboard the Mars Express orbiter. Signals penetrate the polar layered deposits, probably imaging the base of the deposits. Data from the northern lowlands of Chryse Planitia have revealed a shallowly buried quasi-circular structure about 250 kilometers in diameter that is interpreted to be an impact basin. In addition, a planar reflector associated with the basin structure may indicate the presence of a low-loss deposit that is more than 1 kilometer thick.

The Cassini Titan Radar Mapper imaged about 1% of Titan's surface at a resolution of approximately 0.5 kilometer, and larger areas of the globe in lower resolution modes. The images reveal a complex surface, with areas of low relief and a variety of geologic features suggestive of dome-like volcanic constructs, flows, and sinuous channels. The surface appears to be young, with few impact craters. Scattering and dielectric properties are consistent with porous ice or organics. Dark patches in the radar images show high brightness temperatures and high emissivity and are consistent with frozen hydrocarbons.

Tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (TERS) is based on the optical excitation of localized surface plasmons in the tip-substrate cavity, which provides a large but local field enhancement near the tip apex. We report on TERS with smooth single crystalline surfaces as substrates. The adsorbates were CN- ions at Au(111) and malachite green isothiocyanate (MGITC) molecules at Au(111) and Pt(110) using either Au or Ir tips. The data analysis yields Raman enhancements of about 4 x 10(5) for CN- and up to 10(6) for MGITC at Au(111) with a Au tip, probing an area of less than 100 nm radius.

PTX3 is a prototypic long pentraxin expressed by various cell types, most prominently monocytes and endothelial cells, in response to interleukin-1 (IL-1), tumor necrosis factor (TNF) and bacterial products. In the present report, we show that interferon-gamma (IFN-gamma) inhibits the expression of the PTX3 gene induced by exposure to IL-1, TNF or lipopolysaccharide in human monocytes. This effect is dose dependent and observable when IFN-gamma is added from 24 h before up to 3 h after the addition of IL-1. While the time course of the IL-1-induced PTX3 mRNA expression is not affected, IFN-gamma reduces the stability of the PTX3 mRNA as well as its transcription. The inhibition of PTX3 expression is restricted to monocytes in that no inhibition occurs in cytokine-stimulated fibroblasts and endothelial cells. Under the same conditions, as expected, IFN-gamma augmented monocyte chemotactic protein-1 expression in the same cell preparations. PTX3 protein secretion by activated monocytes is also suppressed by exposure to IFN-gamma. Altogether, these data identify a negative pathway of regulation mediated by IFN-gamma, which may occur under inflammatory conditions.

Pentraxins, which include C reactive protein (CRP) and serum amyloid P component (SAP), are prototypic acute phase reactants that serve as indicators of inflammatory reactions. Here we report genomic and cDNA cloning of mouse ptx3 (mptx3), a member of the pentraxin gene family and characterize its extrahepatic expression in vitro and in vivo. mptx3 is organized into three exons on chromosome 3: the first (43 aa) and second exon (175 aa) code for the signal peptide and for a protein portion with no high similarity to known sequences the third (203 aa) for a domain related to classical pentraxins, which contains the "pentraxin family signature." Analysis of the N terminal portion predicts a predominantly alpha helical structure, while the pentraxin domain of ptx3 is accommodated comfortably in the tertiary structure fold of SAP. Normal and transformed fibroblasts, undifferentiated and differentiated myoblasts, normal endothelial cells, and mononuclear phagocytes express mptx3 mRNA and release the protein in vitro on exposure to interleukin-1beta (IL-1beta) and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)alpha. mptx3 was induced by bacterial lipopolysaccharide in vivo in a variety of organs and, most strongly, in the vascular endothelium of skeletal muscle and heart. Thus, mptx3 shows a distinct pattern of in vivo expression indicative of a significant role in cardiovascular and inflammatory pathology.
