This reflective paper aims to contextualise the notion of leadership and professional learning within the Maltese context and present the challenges that the country faces if it truly wants to improve the level of learning in our schools. It presents the main challenge that the country faces at the conceptual, policy and institutional levels as the country needs to grapple with our understanding of governance and how this has been addressed over the years. It is argued that through such an engagement can we relate to the notion of leadership and being a leader in Maltese schools. The paper will explore the role that leadership and governance have on the way we view reform and the nurturing of professional learning and development in Maltese schools. The position taken is that central to any changes requires exploring the need to nurture trust as a fundamental principle that governs the way we relate at both systems and school level. Instructional leadership plays a particular role in school since its role has always been to impact effective teaching and learning processes. Instructional leadership practices is essential in promoting professional development among teachers. Professional learning communities (PLCs) are recognized as one of effective organization practice involving collaborative learning to improve school performance. This paper emphasize the importance of promoting collaborative learning among teachers by instructional school leaders. Therefore, this conceptual paper aims to discuss the influence of instructional leadership practices among school leaders towards PLCs practices. Hence, issues and challenges in implementing PLCs in schools are discussed. As a result, this conceptual paper offers insights with implications for policy, practice, and training. The policy makers should emphasize the encouragement of PLCs implementation to promotes its beneficial practice for school performance. Besides, school leaders should focus on instructional leadership strategies that highlight best practices to promote collaborative learning opportunities for professional development among teachers. This paper also underscores the significance of equipping school leaders with the necessary skills to foster a positive school climate, thereby enhancing the successful implementation of Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) among teachers. Background: Preceptorship has been found to be effective in supporting Newly Qualified Nurses (NQNs) during their transition into challenging environments, particularly in addressing issues related to confidence and anxiety. Effective preceptorship is an element of best practice and essential to support NQNs' transition into the critical care setting. However, the impact of preceptorship on NQNs and their preceptors in critical care units is yet to be completely understood. Aim: To review the impact of preceptorship on NQNs and preceptors working in a critical care environment. Study Design: An integrative literature review of the literature. The review employed Whittemore and Knafl's (2005) five‐stage integrative review approach. Methods: Three databases (MEDLINE, CINAHL and PsycINFO) were searched for papers published between January 2010 and May 2022. The PRISMA framework was used to guide the search and screening. Thematic analysis was used to extract, organize and analyse the data. Results: Nine studies were included in this review. Reflective thematic analysis revealed three themes, with four related subthemes. Preceptorship has an impact on the development of the NQNs and preceptors' 'nurturing' relationship. NQNs develop their knowledge, competence and confidence when experiencing supportive preceptorship. Meanwhile, preceptors experience a combination of increased workload and opportunities for learning and professional development as a result of preceptorship. Conclusion: There is evidence of the impact of preceptorship on learning and professional development for both NQNs and preceptors, but this is a complex phenomenon and further research is required to understand this area more fully. Relevance to Clinical Practice: In nursing practice, it is well‐established that Newly Qualified Nurses (NQNs) often face heightened levels of anxiety and a lack of confidence when embarking on their careers, particularly in the demanding and stressful environment of critical care units. This review holds particular significance in the realm of clinical practice as it delves into the pivotal role of preceptorship in nurturing the professional growth and development of NQNs within the challenging domain of critical care. Background: Science teachers' understanding of the roles of computing practices in science frame how they enact scientific computational practices in their teaching and how their students perceive the relationship between computational practices and scientific endeavours. Objectives: This critical, integrative review synthesizes teacher learning literature about the role of computational literacy and computing practices in K‐12 science teaching. Methods: We examined 54 peer‐reviewed articles and analysed the ways the researchers and teacher participants describe the affordances of integrating computational thinking (CT) and other computational practices in science. We characterize how CT and computational practices are framed in relation to scientific learning goals. We identify six primary affordances for integrating computational practices with science that are conveyed to teachers and by teachers, as represented in these studies of teacher learning. Results and Conclusions: These six perspectives include (1) learning computer science principles, (2) developing CT dispositions, (3) engagement and inclusion in science, (4) taking ownership of science, (5) supporting learning science content, and (6) participating in computational practice as a form of scientific epistemic practice. Our analysis indicates that computational thinking and computational practices are often integrated in science in order to teach something about computing (e.g., Perspective 1), rather than to support learners' scientific work. Only the 29 articles coded for the sixth perspective—that is, in service of epistemic aims in science—demonstrate commitment to students' uses of computational ideas and practices as epistemic tools to participate in the sensemaking work of science. Takeaways: Comparison of Perspectives 5 and 6 illustrates the nuance between computational practices in science that reify something students have already "figured out," rather than those that serve epistemic goals. Perspective 6 encapsulates the deep synergy among (1) the reflexive nature of computing with scientific ideas and (2) computing as a central practice in science and engineering. We contend that a more focused message of computational practices in service of scientific sensemaking goals is necessary if we expect teachers to enact CT and related computational practices in their classrooms. Context: Transitions of patient care responsibility occur frequently between physicians. Resultant discontinuities make it difficult for physicians to observe clinical outcomes. Little is known about what physicians do to overcome the practical challenges to learning these discontinuities create. This study explored physicians’ activities in practice as they sought follow‐up information about patients. Methods: Using a constructivist grounded theory approach, semi‐structured interviews with 18 internal medicine hospitalist and resident physicians at a single tertiary care academic medical center explored participants’ strategies when deliberately conducting follow‐up after they transitioned responsibility for patients to other physicians. Following open coding, the authors used activity theory (AT) to explore interactions among the social, cultural and material influences related to follow‐up. Results: The authors identified three themes related to follow‐up: (i) keeping lists to track patients, (ii) learning to create tracking systems and (iii) conducting follow‐up. Analysis of participants' follow‐up processes as an activity system highlighted key tensions in the system and participants’ work adaptations. Tension within functionality of electronic health records for keeping lists (tools) to find information about patients’ outcomes (object) resulted in using paper lists as workarounds. Tension between paper lists (tools) and protecting patients’ health information (rules) led to rule‐breaking or abandoning activities of locating information. Finding time to conduct desired follow‐up produced tension between this and other activity systems. Conclusion: In clinical environments characterised by discontinuity, lists of patients served as tools for guiding patient care follow‐up. The authors offer four recommendations to address the tensions identified through AT: (i) optimise electronic health record tracking systems to eliminate the need for paper lists; (ii) support physicians’ skill development in developing and maintaining tracking systems for follow‐up; (iii) dedicate time in physicians’ work schedules for conducting follow‐up; and (iv) engage physicians and patients in determining guidelines for longitudinal tracking that optimise physicians’ learning and respect patients’ privacy. Nurse‐led research and innovation is key to improving health experiences and outcomes and reducing health inequalities. Clinical academic training programmes for nurses to develop research and innovation skills alongside continued development of their clinical practice are becoming increasingly established at national, regional and local levels. Though widely supported, geographical variation in the range and scope of opportunities available remains. It is imperative that clinical academic opportunities for nurses continue to grow to ensure equity of access and opportunity so that the potential of nurse‐led clinical academic research to improve quality of care, health experience and health outcomes can be realised. In this paper, we describe and report on clinical academic internship opportunities available to nurses to share internationally, a range of innovative programmes currently in operation across the UK. Examples of some of the tangible benefits for patients, professional development, clinical teams and NHS organisations resulting from these clinical academic internships are illustrated. Information from local evaluations of internship programmes was collated to report what has worked well alongside 'real‐world' set‐up and sustainability challenges faced in practice. Clinical academic internship schemes are often opportunistically developed, making use of hybrid models of delivery and funding responsive to local needs and available resources. Key enablers of successful clinical academic internship programmes for nurses were support from senior clinical leaders and established relationships with local universities and wider organisations committed to research capacity building. Background Study: Previous systematic reviews concluded that online professional‐learning communities (OPLCs) have positive effects on teachers' development, but explored neither the technological affordances that make this possible nor the potential negative impacts of technology use in OPLCs. Objectives: The aim of this study is to systematically analyse previous research on teachers' OPLCs, and thus help answer the question of what technological affordances (dis)empower members of teachers' OPLCs, and how they do so. Methods: This study applied the systematic‐review method. A total of 28 studies were identified and analysed using rigorously defined inclusion and exclusion criteria. The results are reported as a synthesis. Results and Conclusions: First, in theme, the selected articles primarily focused on features of OPLCs and of teachers' knowledge. Second, mixed‐methods approaches were commonly used in the sampled research, and the number of studies employing advanced statistical methods and machine learning increased over time. And third, the reviewed studies' findings suggest that technology supports 'bottom‐up' teachers' communities (as distinct from 'top‐down' professional development organized by educational authorities) in seven ways: that is, by promoting collaboration opportunities, expanding the participants' networks, facilitating knowledge sharing, delivering support more rapidly, providing emotional support, allowing ubiquitous learning, and enabling multiple modes of participation. Coach developers play a critical role in the development of coaches. However, coach developers themselves remain under-researched, in particular the socially mediated process of becoming a coach developer is poorly understood. Eleven coach developers working across Regional and National Sports Governing Bodies took part in a series of interviews and in situ observations over the course of 12 months. Engaging a reflexive thematic analysis, this paper focuses on the power relations that contour the transitions into coach developer roles. Specifically, the analysis depicts an identity-making process in which power is exerted through different sites and modalities that structure and regulate coach developers' practice and roles through shared discourses. In efforts to secure their positions and maintain legitimate identities, coach developers operated within an uncritical selective culture, which saw them wield, maintain, and enhance the power provided to them. Building on existing research, we examine the contested nature of what it means to be a coach developer, specifically showcasing the navigation of inherently unstable professional learning cultures and critiquing coach developer training. This work begins to address calls for the voices of coach developers in their research, while identifying the reproduction of a cultural orthodoxy, and the lack of effective in situ coach developer training. Implications from the research suggest that further support and development are required in the training of coach developers in situ, as well as the need for research to interrogate the language and discourse framing the role. Background and Purpose: Understanding the experiences of learners—and future graduates—is integral to their professional development and to the development of the profession. This paper adds to understanding of physiotherapy student experiences by exploring the ways students and recent graduates approach, learn about, connect with and form a relationship with their chosen profession of physiotherapy. Methods: Heuristic inquiry, a form of phenomenology, was used. Thirteen participants (11 students and 2 new graduates) were interviewed. Results: The findings are presented as four portraits: passenger, tourist, resident and citizen. These represent four particular and prominent ways that the participants connected with specific situations and/or to the profession as a whole, the sense they made of those situations (or the broader profession) and the identity formed. Discussion: The portraits help educators to think about how students are navigating the process of becoming a physiotherapist and might act as a tool to help foster students' professional development. Educators who understand students' motivations and struggles are better prepared to help students to see themselves and the profession in sophisticated ways. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This two-stage study was conducted to examine the awareness of policy and underlying pedagogy as well as the use of reflective practice by teaching staff (faculty) within a Scottish university. In the first stage, teaching staff completed a questionnaire; of these 14 then took part in stage two, semi-structured interviews. Interview transcripts were subject to thematic analysis and three main themes emerged: (1) The methods and processes of reflection ('How'); (2) The personal and organisational drivers for employing reflective practices ('Why'); and (3) The barriers to reflection ('Why not'). Significant findings included the dominance of traditional (paper-based as opposed to computer mediated) reflective writing in teaching staff's own reflection, and the importance of both formal and informal group reflection in methods and process. Reasons for reflection focused on the importance of both organisational drivers such as professional standards and awarding bodies, and personal drivers such as personal growth, identity, and psychological wellbeing. Barriers to reflection included both the concrete such as insufficient time and lack of opportunities to share resources, as well as the attitudinal and cultural. Possible ways of tacking these barriers also emerged. Implications for organisational and individual practice are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper provides a description of recent transformative learning applications in four broad areas – health care study abroad, community, and the workplace. The applications were selected from a literature review of English language articles published in peer-reviewed journals from 2010 to 2020. To describe the applications in each of the four broad areas, the paper focuses on the rationale for the studies, their settings, their context, the reported transformation or outcome as well as the impediments and facilitating factors for the transformation. Introduction: Over the past decade, foundational courses in MCH have been revised and revamped to integrate the life course perspective and social determinants of health in ways that bring these essential issues to the core of the learning experience. Yet the racial reckoning of 2020 and the racially disparate health impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic underscore that a deeper, more focused approach to anti-racist pedagogy is now imperative for MCH educators and others responsible for developing the MCH workforce. Methods: In this paper, we discuss our experience of building a 'community of practice' of anti-racist MCH trainees through our course, 'Foundations of Maternal and Child Health Policy, Practice, and Science.' Results: We identify four principles which guided our course: (1) building on students' experience, knowledge, identities and social justice commitments; (2) creating a common purpose and shared vocabulary related to racism; (3) organizing classroom activities to reflect real-world problems and professional practices related to addressing structural racism as a root cause of health inequities; and (4) building students' skills and confidence to recognize and address structural racism as MCH professionals. Discussion: We hope that this description of our principles, along with examples of how they were put into practice, will be useful to MCH educators who seek to build anti-racist frameworks to guide MCH workforce development. Background: To purposefully integrate information and communication technologies (ICT) into contemporary teaching, teachers must have complex technological, pedagogical and content‐related knowledge (TPACK). TPACK could be fostered through diverse learning environments such as working in a makerspace as part of university teacher training. The development of TPACK in (preservice) teachers depends on how effectively they can assess their own knowledge and adapt their own learning process. Self‐assessment tools can be used to identify and assess their individual TPACK. Objectives: The study presents data on TPACK development through project work in a makerspace. It examines the consistency of self‐assessment and performance tests in relation to TPACK and discusses the applicability of self‐assessment scales to self‐regulated learning. Methods: TPACK self‐assessment takes place among preservice teacher students (N = 327) in a pre‐post design. This is complemented and contrasted with an external assessment in form of a self‐developed performance test (teaching vignettes). Results: Self‐assessment and performance test show a TPACK‐increase resulting in the project work in the makerspace, with higher performing students benefiting more from the intervention than lower performing students. All students tend to overestimate their TPACK before and after the intervention, with low‐performing students overestimating themselves more than high‐performing students. Existing TPACK scales can serve as readily available self‐assessment tools, but should be complemented by other knowledge assessment measures. Furthermore, depending on the results of the self‐assessment, different learning opportunities should be made available so that preservice teachers with a lower TPACK still benefit from the project work in the makerspace. Take Away: Self‐assessments accompanying the work in the makerspace could provide feedback information about TPACK‐related knowledge, learning processes and learning outcomes and thus support students in structuring their work. For this purpose, it seems necessary to improve the quality of self‐assessment to enable reliable reflection on preservice teachers' own learning process. Lay Description: What is already known about this topic: The opportunities for using ICT in schools are developing rapidly, and with them, the demands on teachers' skills (TPACK; e.g., Becker et al., 2020; Eickelmann & Gerick, 2020; Redecker, 2017).Many studies measuring TPACK largely use measurement instruments that required students to self‐assess their TPACK (e.g., Handal et al., 2013; Kaplon‐Schilis & Lyublinskaya, 2019; Lee & Tsai, 2010; Willermark, 2017).Research on TPACK emphasizes that self‐testing TPACK via self‐assessment should be complemented by performance tests in order to better understand the domain‐specific nature of TPACK and its complexity (e.g., Akyuz, 2018; Graham et al., 2009; Voogt et al., 2013). What this paper adds: The research provides information on the extent to which TPACK changes triggered by an intervention can be captured using self‐assessment scales and a self‐developed performance test.The data shows how consistent students' self‐assessments are compared to their demonstrated performance.Furthermore, we critically discuss to what extent scales developed to measure TPACK in scientific studies can also be applied to self‐directed learning. Implications for practice: Prospective teachers must acquire TPACK competences for the implementation of contemporary teaching, which will enable them to produce digital teaching and learning materials in the future, for example. This TPACK is to be trained through self‐organized project work in the pedagogical Makerspace within the framework of university subject teaching.Self‐assessment instruments for TPACK can be more easily used in the field to accompany projects so that students can receive feedback on knowledge, learning process, and learning outcome. However, our study shows that existing self‐assessment instruments can be used mainly in self‐directed learning processes when learning gains on the complexity levels 'remembering' and 'understanding' are to be captured, even though feedback especially in the area of 'applying' TPACK is of great importance for teaching practice. Combining self‐assessments (based on work samples) and performance tests is therefore a promising approach, as the complementary use of performance tests provides insights into preservice teachers' abilities to 'apply' TPACK.The moderate correlation between self‐assessment and performance in our study also shows that self‐assessment is a skill that needs to be learned. Background: Immersive virtual reality (VR) is increasingly used in organizational training interventions. However, few studies have systematically investigated VR compared to standard training methods in actual organizational contexts. Objectives: The focus of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of a VR simulation for training professionals in the biotech industry. Aligning training needs to unique media affordances, the study designed an immersive story‐based VR simulation for training customer‐facing employees on a new product and tested it in an international biotech company. Methods: The system was evaluated by comparing its effectiveness to a traditional video presentation with the same content in a randomized between subjects experiment. The sample consisted of 95 employees across three locations: Brazil, Denmark, and USA. Results: The VR simulation group performed better than the video presentation group on the outcomes of conceptual knowledge (d = 0.41) spatial knowledge (d = 0.61), transfer intentions (d = 0.57), enjoyment (d = 1.74), self‐efficacy (d = 0.68), perceived learning (d = 0.89), personal value (d = 0.83), and organizational value (d = 0.82), but no significant difference was found for factual knowledge (d = −0.10). Implications: Results suggest that VR simulations can be effective across cultures in organizational training interventions. VR is specifically effective when the goals of the training are to increase conceptual and spatial understanding as well as enjoyment, and self‐efficacy, but not factual knowledge. Furthermore, employees report higher levels of perceived learning, personal and organizational value and transfer intentions after VR training compared to standard video‐based training. Implications of study findings for practitioners: The results support the value of using VR simulations in organizational training, specifically related to affective outcomes as well as spatial and conceptual knowledge and transfer intentions.The study suggests that it is not the medium of VR, but rather the alignment between the training goals with the instructional methods and the unique affordances of VR that will contribute to better or worse learning outcomes.The article describes how to evaluate the effectiveness of VR tools in applied contexts, suggesting that we have to evaluate the effectiveness of tested content with respect to different outcome variables, which coincide with the training outcomes of a particular organizational context.The project as a whole, can be used as a blueprint for future applied research efforts, exemplifying how to bridge gaps between small‐medium‐enterprises, international corporate companies and academic institutions. Background: The COVID‐19 pandemic has highlighted the importance of a strong, effective public health nursing workforce while also requiring public health nursing faculty to adapt teaching strategies as courses transitioned online. It is essential to understand how the pandemic‐enforced transition from face‐to‐face to remote learning impacts student outcomes. The purpose of this paper is to compare student learning outcomes in a pre‐licensure public health nursing course before, during, and after the transition to remote learning. Methods: Descriptive statistics were computed for assignments, exams, and final course grades for three terms (Fall 2019, Spring 2020 and Fall 2020). Results: Analysis showed statistically significant differences between terms for assignments and exams but not the final course grade. However, these differences were driven by small standard deviations rather than differences between mean scores demonstrating that there was actual little difference in student learning outcomes across terms. Conclusions: Authors suggest strategies to support consistent academic outcomes and future research needed understand student learning outcomes during the pandemic; ultimately building the public health nursing workforce necessary to address the current and future public health crises. Aim(s) To understand how nurse managers facilitate learning in clinical workplaces. Background: Meeting staff learning needs in the complex workplaces of contemporary health care is paramount to the delivery of safe patient care. Hospitals employ a range of strategies to address these needs. However, nurse managers' contribution to staff learning at the unit level is underexplored in contemporary literature. Method(s): A Gadamerian philosophical hermeneutic framework guided data collection and analysis. Thirteen nurse managers from two Australian hospitals each participated in two interviews and a period of observation. Findings Nurse managers' learning facilitation practices were enacted with staff individually, within teams, and through artefacts, and were shaped by their identities, perspectives on staff learning, knowledge of staff performance, and motivations. Power was revealed as a uniquely enacted driver of their learning facilitation practices. Conclusion(s): This paper illuminates an aspect of nurse managers' practice that has been poorly acknowledged in contemporary nursing literature. Nurse managers' learning facilitation practices were found to be complex, fluid, and embedded in their everyday work routines. Implications for Nursing Management: Given current concerns about safety and quality in health care, this research opens up possibilities for definition and enrichment of nurse managers' practice as facilitators of learning. This paper features an autoethnographic approach in presenting and reflecting upon the story of one higher education student’s rapid vocational and academic transformation. Initially an inconspicuous undergraduate student, Andrew experienced an accelerated development that catapulted him to working in elite sport performance analysis (PA) environments, within a year. PA is a sub-discipline of sports coaching that involves using the latest technological advances to influence sporting performance, through the objective analysis of performance data. This autoethnographic piece is partly Andrew’s personal reflection upon that journey towards his newfound profession, which initially grew out of his experience of a generic sports degree at a university. Through stepping out of his comfort zone, and analysing sports previously unknown to him, extraordinary progress was made, and various vocational and academic opportunities arose. The initial catalyst for this developmental journey was facilitated by coaching lecturer David, who reflects upon how Andrew’s story links to his own educational philosophies. Andrew and David explore what these stories might mean to them personally, including potential links to the metaphor of learning as becoming, and notions around the concepts of learner agency, and educational facilitation. Purpose Surgical site infection (SSI) is a common complication in surgical practice. SSIs represent almost a fifth of healthcare-associated infections in Scotland, and have deleterious effects on mortality, morbidity, length of stay, and cost to the health service. SSIs in neurosurgery may be more consequential than in other specialities given the potentially devastating effects of central nervous system infection. The paper aims to discuss these issues.Design/methodology/approach In 2014, the authors became concerned about an anecdotal increase in infection rates in the authors’ unit. While national guidance on SSI surveillance existed in England and Scotland, the authors had no relevant procedures or policies in Glasgow, and began the process of establishing a surveillance programme. This was driven by clinicians but faced challenges due to a lack of involvement of the wider organisation in the early stages.Findings SSIs were initially reported via a form-filling system. This developed into an editable hospital intranet database, but still suffered from the problems of voluntary entries and under-reporting. Following the formal engagement of management structures and the funding of a surveillance nurse, the authors’ programme developed robustness, and resilience. With the advent of an SSI committee, the authors now have a well-established programme that ingrains SSI prevention in the collective learning and organisational memory of the authors’ unit.Originality/value Clinicians must lead on the development of these programmes, but long-term durability requires engagement and support from the wider organisation. In this conceptual paper, we present a professional practice-oriented Multidimensional Model of Reflective Practice (MMRP) and a Critical Incident Reflection (CIR) protocol as worthwhile tools for supporting teacher candidates (TCs) to become more self-directed, multi-faceted, and holistic in their reflective practice. The model presents reflection as a complex endeavor situated in a dynamic milieu. It emphasizes the complementary nature of professional competencies of knowledge, skills, and disposition, and the interrogation of an incident through technical, contextual, and critical reflection as well as reflection-in, -on, and -for-action. The CIR protocol provides scaffolding support for TCs as they move toward becoming independent reflective practitioners. Together, the MMRP and CIR protocol facilitate multidimensional reflection. We present a case for providing a more deliberate support for reflection. In doing this, we define reflection, highlight its common frameworks, and discuss the significance of intentional and systematic reflection on professional competencies. Organisational learning is an area that aids organisations in improving their processes by reusing experience so that knowledge is accessible to the entire organisation. However, it is not a trivial task to bring about such learning in software development companies, especially as this is an area where processes and knowledge are often internalised in the minds of employees. Some approaches presented in the literature to facilitate organisational learning aim at transforming content generated within companies with Web 2.0 collaborative tools in courses. These courses are based on learning schema that describes their structure and content. However, the creation of these schemes requires a specialist who knows the company's needs as well as the pedagogical organisation's learning requirements. In order to facilitate learning and minimise dependence on specialists, this paper presents an approach that aims to aid companies in identifying developers' learning needs while creating learning schema in a semiautomatic way. Based on the approach proposed, an environment was implemented and an experimental study was conducted to evaluate the identification of relevant issues to the organisation and development of courses. Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to review eight major evaluations of leadership and management development programmes in parts of the UK National Health Service and also to identify learning from these as a basis for an evaluation framework which focuses on impact within healthcare organisations. Design/methodology/approach – Eight evaluations conducted over a 13-year period are reviewed in terms of the staff groups covered, numbers involved, duration, programme elements, evaluation approach adopted and key learning points. General conclusions are derived from this review. Findings – Although each evaluation relates to a unique context or setting, there are clear common messages running across all those studied which are of wider interest and concern. Practical implications – The framework developed from the review may be useful to those commissioning, designing, delivering and evaluating leadership programmes. Originality/value – The paper seeks to identify common learning across programmes involving some 1,653 people, ranging in duration from seven to 18 months and covering first-line clinical management to executive director positions. This paper addresses the issue of how strategic-level partnerships, such as Local Safeguarding Children Boards, know about and learn from practice. The death of Baby Peter in Haringey exposed the dangers of reliance on numerical performance data alone to inform leaders about the true state of practice. The drivers for, and impact of, regulatory, media and political pressures on front-line practice and partnership behaviour are discussed with reference to the rise of organisational risk management and 'rule-based' responses (Munro, 2009). These are exacerbated by an overload of negative data about child protection systems which results in contagious 'attention cascades' which lead to over-simplification of complex issues and the rush to quick-fix solutions. This results in compliance-based responses designed to avoid 'blame', based on individualistic analyses of complex situations. Under these conditions, 'learning', such as from serious case reviews, can become regressive (how to avoid future culpability) rather than progressive (how to improve knowledge skills and practice). It is argued that understanding and improving practice require strategic partnerships to have engaged with front-line staff in order to access practice narratives as well as performance numbers, and to achieve an accurate and systemic analysis of the state of practice and how it can be improved. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to explore how trainee hospital doctors led work-based projects undertaken on an accredited development programme in England. Design/methodology/approach: This is a case study of a leadership programme for hospital-based specialty trainees. The programme included participants leading work-based projects which were submitted for academic accreditation. Accounts of 35 work-based projects were thematically analysed to explore how participants led their projects. Findings: Leadership was often informal and based on a series of individual face-to-face conversations. The establishment of project teams and the use of existing communication processes were often avoided. The reasons for this approach included lack of opportunities to arrange meetings, fear of conflict in meetings and the personal preferences of the participants. The authors discuss these findings with reference to theory and evidence about conversations and informal leadership, highlighting the relevance of complexity theory. Research limitations/implications: The data are limited and drawn from the best accounts written for a specific educational context. There is therefore limited transferability to the leadership work of hospital-based specialty trainees in general. Future research into medical leadership might explore the micro practices of leadership and change, particularly in informal settings. Practical implications: Leadership development programmes for trainee hospital doctors might concentrate on developing skills of conversation, particularly where there are or may be perceived power imbalances. Exploring conversations within the theory of complex responsive processes should be considered for inclusion in programmes. Background: Health policy endorses best practice in maternity services as the quality triad of personcentred, safe and effective care. However, repeated inquiries into the quality of maternity services continue to identify concerns about culture, leadership and teamwork. Therefore support is needed to implement best practice. The Promoting Action on Research Implementation in Health Services framework (PARiHS) has the potential to inform the implementation of quality through an initial exploration of contextual readiness. Aims and objectives: This paper describes the first phase of a quality transformation programme in a maternity service in England. It aims to assess the service's context, using the PARiHS framework to identify enabling factors to guide the implementation of best practice. Methods: Collaborative and participative analysis, underpinned by practice development methodology, used reflective insights from diary entries and meeting notes, combined with analysis of national data, local metrics and a staff culture survey. Inductive themes generated were mapped to the 'context' elements of PARiHS to assess contextual readiness. Results: Four themes emerged: language, leadership, learning and variability. Context mapping, showed low levels of leadership and culture and a medium level for evaluation. 'Learning' underpinned each contextual element and was described as: 1) a shared value needed for high-functioning learning cultures; 2) an attribute of collective leadership; and 3) key to evaluating what matters to women using the service and staff. the service and staff. Conclusion: The PARiHS framework can help maternity services consider their contextual readiness to implement best practice. Assessing readiness is essential to prepare for successful transformation. Purpose – The purpose of the paper is to contribute to the conceptualization and discussion of professional competencies needed for supporting the development of the whole-school approach in school health promotion (SHP). Design/methodology/approach – The paper is based on a conceptual synthesis of literature, guided by a theoretical perspective on health promotion agency and professional competencies to identify core competency domains and elements. This is followed by a discussion of focus, gaps and links in conceptualizations of competency domains and elements. Findings – The synthesis identifies five core competency domains: policy-development; organizational development; professional development; development of students’ learning; and development of health promotion activities. Three critical gaps in the conceptualizations of competency domains and elements are identified and discussed: the downplay of the development of learning domain and the narrow focus on cognitive elements within it; the narrow focus on cognitive elements and technical-organizational elements in the development of HP activities domain; and the downplay of affective competency elements across domains. Practical implications – The five competency domains may provide an overall guiding tool for professionals tasked with practice and competency development in SHP, and a point of departure for the development of conceptualizations of professional competencies in concrete practice contexts. Athletic trainers (ATs) appreciate the accessibility of web-based continuing education (CE) opportunities. ATs describe needing more CE opportunities related to clinical documentation, but the effectiveness of CE in this content area has not been studied. Obtain ATs' perceptions of their experiences accessing web-based CE specific to clinical documentation. Qualitative study. Web-based audio interviews. Twenty-nine ATs, averaging 36.2 ± 9.0 years of age, including 16 women and 13 men who represented 8 different clinical practice settings. Participants previously completed 1 of 2 web-based CE modules specific to clinical documentation, a personalized learning pathway (PLP) or passive reading list (PAS). After completing the modules, 1 investigator interviewed each participant regarding their experiences accessing and completing the modules. Following the Consensual Qualitative Research approach, 4 investigators (3 primary coders and 1 internal auditor) inductively analyzed the interview transcripts. We completed 5 rounds of consensus coding and finalized themes and supporting categories. We identified 2 themes: (1) structure and (2) barriers to completing the modules. Although both groups were satisfied with the content of the modules, PLP participants were more satisfied with the structure and experience of accessing the resources than the PAS participants. PLP participants enjoyed the engagement of the variety of resources included, whereas PAS participants inconsistently accessed reading materials based on personal preference. Both groups described time as a barrier to completing the modules, and some participants experienced technology barriers. ATs value web-based CE opportunities that compile information related to a topic. Learners find a variety of learning formats, including videos, case studies, knowledge checks, and reflection prompts, to be more engaging than only reading materials. Although time continues to be a barrier to completing CE, offering accessible and engaging learning opportunities improves satisfaction with completing CE. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Knowledge seems to mitigate the consequences of dementia and new educational strategies are required. This study aimed to qualitatively explore the reflexive views and experiences of virtual Communities of Practice (vCoP) among informal and formal caregivers of people with dementia and explore vCoP as a tool for learning and knowledge development. Data were collected in a sequence of virtual workshops and analyzed and synthesized using thematic analysis. For the informal caregivers, one main theme emerged: Learning and support, comprising three subthemes: Strategies for learning; Creating emotional support; and in need of professional support. Among formal caregivers, one main theme emerged: Professional development, comprising two subthemes: Sharing and gaining knowledge and Knowledge as a professional tool. vCoP and collaborative learning using an educational platform seem to support learning and professional development among informal and formal caregivers, respectively. As a collaborative, virtual activities seem to provide practical and emotional support and promote professional development; vCoP seem to have the potential to promote the resilience and sustainability of care. Further research is necessary to gain an understanding of the effects of Communities of Practice (CoP) and vCoP and their successful implementation in care practices as well as the potential of using CoP in continuing professional development, CPD. Purpose As part of a nationwide research about knowledge, attitude, experiences and educational needs towards complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) among Indonesian clinical psychologists (CPs), the purpose of this paper is to explore CPs' perceptions of CAM research and their interest in learning CAM.Design/methodology/approach A link to an online survey was e-mailed to all 1,045 CPs across Indonesia. At the end of the survey, two open-ended questions were asked: "What do you think about CAM research in Indonesia?" and "Why are you interested in learning about CAM?", which were responded to by 127 participants (87 per cent of females; Mage=36.67, SD=9.02). Participants' responses were analysed using inductive qualitative content analysis.Findings It was found that two global themes for CPs' perceptions of CAM were to improve participants' professionalism and as part of continuing education and development for mental health professionals. The favourable responses in this study may reflect participants' willingness to be involved in collaborative CAM research and education. Moreover, CAM was perceived as part of Indonesian culture and participants viewed CAM research and knowledge as a chance to promote Indonesian local wisdom to complement conventional psychotherapy.Research limitations/implications These findings might call for stakeholders to integrate CAM knowledge into psychology education, facilitate CAM research in psychology settings and encourage collaborative CAM research. However, self-selection bias may limit the findings of this study.Originality/value This study explored perceptions of CAM research and interest in learning CAM that have rarely been investigated among mental health professionals and particularly, until now, have not been investigated in Indonesia. Effective communication is based both on the capacity of the person with complex communication needs, and of other key stakeholders (including communication and education professionals, family members, community partners, and healthcare professionals), to ensure that appropriate AAC supports are provided. In this paper, we describe strategies to build awareness of AAC and to assist people with complex communication needs in obtaining needed services; to build the knowledge, skills, and attitudes of AAC service providers; to provide instruction for people with complex communication needs, as well as communication partners and advocates; and to develop communication supports in society more broadly. We also provide an agenda for building capacity in research and development activities to support full participation by people with complex communication needs throughout society. This paper explores the employment and further education outcomes of students studying criminology who participate in professional skills development and work-integrated learning courses at a major Australian university. Three years of data were obtained from the Australian Graduate Survey, which is completed by university graduates four months after they complete their tertiary studies. The results indicate that students enrolled in a Bachelor of Criminology and Criminal Justice who complete a career and professional development course in conjunction with a work-integrated learning course are approximately twice as likely to be engaged in industry relevant employment or further study four months after graduation. They also are more likely to use a wider range of search techniques to find employment. This suggests that it is possible to improve employment outcomes for students by providing a university-based course that focuses on employability and professional behaviors in conjunction with work-integrated learning programs. Within Scotland, as elsewhere, there has been a resurgence of interest in the critical role of supervision within social work practice. However, those in transition from practitioner to supervisor still commonly report feeling unprepared for their changing role and uncertain about what it entails. This paper will explore our experiences of delivering an accredited post-qualifying supervision course since 2008 to professionals from different sectors, diverse professional backgrounds, and with varying levels of supervisory experience. The course provides time and space to think about the different elements of supervision, and to consider how these translate into day-to-day practice. We will argue that the opportunity to explore the complexity of the supervisory task, while learning from and with peers, is an important part of making the transition in professional role and identity. Moreover, in organisational contexts where the reflective space which supervision can provide may feel under threat, and where the focus on people who use services can at times be lost, professional staff undertaking supervision training describe feeling more confident and competent in their role, with renewed commitment both to uphold the value of reflective supervision, and to sustain a clear emphasis on people who use services. Context Many of those involved in continuing professional development ( CPD) over the past 10 years have engaged in discussions about its goals and activities. Whereas in the past CPD was viewed as an education intervention directed towards the medical expert role, recent research highlights the need to expand the scope of CPD and to promote its more explicit role in improving patient care and health outcomes. Recent developments in quality improvement ( QI) and competency-based medical education ( CBME), guided by appropriate theories of learning and change, can shed light on how the field might best advance. This paper describes principles of QI and CBME and how they might contribute to CPD, explores theoretical perspectives that inform such an integration and suggests a future model of CPD. Discussion Continuing professional development seeks to improve patient outcomes by increasing physician knowledge and skills and changing behaviours, whereas QI takes the approach of system and process change. Combining the strengths of a CPD approach with strategies known to be effective from the field of QI has the potential to harmonise the contributions of each, and thereby to lead to better patient outcomes. Similarly, competency-based CPD is envisioned to place health needs and patient outcomes at the centre of a CPD system that will be guided by a set of competencies to enhance the quality of practice and the safety of the health system. Conclusions We propose that the future CPD system should adhere to the following principles: it should be grounded in the everyday workplace, integrated into the health care system, oriented to patient outcomes, guided by multiple sources of performance and outcome data, and team-based; it should employ the principles and strategies of QI, and should be taken on as a collective responsibility by physicians, CPD provider organisations, regulators and the health system. This study explored the emergency remote teaching experiences of Ghanaian teacher educators during COVID-19. The study employed a basic qualitative interpretive approach and purposively interviewed 25 teacher educators from 15 teacher training institutions. Teacher educators in this study reported that emergency remote teaching (ERT) was a learning opportunity and professional capacity-building experience for them to engage in contemporary pedagogical practices. Teachers also indicated that synchronous and asynchronous remote teaching was helpful for their students, as it provided students with the opportunity to engage in self-paced learning due to their access to learning resources at any time. ERT promoted peer teaching, team teaching, and effective collaboration among teacher educators. However, with little preparation and training for remote teaching and learning, both teachers and students struggled with the remote teaching and learning process. A myriad of challenges were identified including the unsuitability and unfamiliarity of online teaching and learning platforms, a high rate of absenteeism and low student engagement, a lack of parental and school support, and inadequate technological resources. The study revealed that mathematics and science teachers needed advanced technological resources to support student learning. Implications for educational policy and practice are discussed. This article argues that interviewing is a process in which interviewees can reflect on critical decisions about their academic careers. Reflective practice is a course of action where a person ponders significant incidents in her or his life. In so doing, she or he can make critical decisions about her or his own well-being. Drawing on our experiences collecting qualitative data for ADVANCE Purdue, an NSF-funded project to increase the number and success of women faculty in STEM academic disciplines, we illustrate how interviews triggered our interviewees to think differently about accessing or interpreting promotion and tenure policies of the university. Hence, we argue that interviews can be considered as a form of reflective practice where interviewees decide to take alternative actions to enhance their well-being. In this paper, we ask: (a) How do interviews trigger new realizations among interviewees?; and (b) How do interviews act as agents of potential social change? Data are derived from semi-structured interviews with faculty members from science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and agriculture disciplines at Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana. Purpose - Public services such as healthcare face a variety of challenges. This paper aims to show how the use of a new generation of learning and support tools could make a significant contribution to tackling current problems and addressing future issues. Design/methodology/approach - Learning and support tools can make it much easier for people to understand areas that are inherently complicated and do difficult jobs. The paper shows how an approach to improving the performance of professionals and knowledge workers can be employed in healthcare. Key lessons from early adopters are summarized, and questions posed for training and development professionals. Findings - Tools examined in other contexts have increased the performance of key workgroups and yielded a first year return on investment of over 20, 30 and 70 times. Applying the approach that is suggested to healthcare could address challenges facing the system and benefit both practitioners and patients. Practical implications - Benefits of the suggested approach include better engagement with patients, greater understanding, improved productivity, reduced costs, quicker responses, faster dissemination of beneficial changes, less stress, higher standards of patient safety and care, and evidenced compliance. Areas examined include education and training, induction, continuing professional development, ensuring patient safety, maintaining standards, monitoring practitioners, diagnosis, ensuring optimum care pathways, reducing stress and improving productivity. Originality/value - Many responsible boards would like to address the challenges facing public services such as healthcare, but they lack a practical and cost effective way of doing so. The approach outlined represents a cost effective way of integrating learning and working, and uses a framework for managing information, knowledge and best practice, and related learning tools to support the development, updating and practice of healthcare professionals, and ensure adherence to relevant procedures, regulations and standards. The Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) define science literacy as having the knowledge and understanding of scientific concepts and processes and the ability to question natural world phenomena (National Research Council 2012). When students engage with texts that deal with real world issues, they can look for claims supported by evidence and work with reasoning of other students through interactive conversations about the data and sharing of ideas. Therefore, integrating scientific arguments into the classroom is an important step in developing scientific literacy as it helps students engage in authentic learning through a variety of practices and methods to construct and evaluate claims and evidence. In our teaching and professional learning programs, we address the question of how to meaningfully assess students' science literacy and ability to engage in science argumentation through a CER framework that incorporates the Next Generation Science Standards. The answer to our inquiry was the development of Scenario-based Assessments (SBA). Background: In advanced clinical learning labs on campus, high-fidelity simulation has become an essential educational approach in the Bachelor of Nursing Education programme. However, simulation while in clinical placement, in situ, is rarely used in Bachelor of Nursing Education. The aim of the present study was to explore how in situ simulation training at a surgical hospital ward, according to Bachelor of Nursing students, influenced their learning and development process. Methods: A qualitative descriptive study was conducted. Data were collected through individual interviews with a sample of 21 s-year Bachelor of Nursing students who completed 40 in situ simulations during their eight-week clinical placement at a Norwegian University Hospital. Data were analysed using inductive content analysis. Results: The data analysis generated six subcategories constituting two descriptive categories: building professional confidence and internalising nursing knowledge. Although the students found in situ simulation stressful and uncomfortable for being assessed by student peers, the teacher and preceptor, the process of managing clinical situations in simulation helped build professional confidence. What the students had learned in the simulation was directly transferable to real clinical situations because they were in the hospital setting. The simulation sessions enabled them to connect theoretical knowledge and clinical skills. They could test their skills in a safe environment, performing procedures that made them aware of how their knowledge could be used in real life. Conclusion: According to the Bachelor of Nursing students' own experiences, in situ simulation supported the students' learning process, connected theory and practice and contributed to developing confidence in the performance of clinical skills. Introduction: Effective primary healthcare services have been identified by the World Health Organization as the most equitable approach to enhancing universal healthcare. Robust models of mentoring for registered nurses (RNs) transitioning to primary healthcare roles have yet to be described in the Australian context. A robust mentoring model can support RNs to fulfill their potential, bridging the gap between theory and practice. In 2015, the peak body for nurses in primary health care (PHC) began developing a transition to practice program, including embedded mentoring to support newly graduated and more experienced registered and enrolled nurses. This quality improvement study reports the experiences and perspectives of nurses participating as mentors in two separate offerings of the program delivered between 2019 and 2021. Method: A two-phase concurrent mixed methods evaluation utilized data from pre- and post online surveys and post program meetings. Quantitative items underwent descriptive analyses. Thematic analysis of free-text responses and comments was conducted independently by two researchers. Mentors voluntarily provided self-report data and were informed that data is routinely collected to support continuous quality improvement processes for all programs. An Information Sheet informed mentors of data usage, confidentiality, and options to withdraw without penalty from the program at any time. Results: Seventy-nine mentors were recruited to support two groups of nurses (N = 111). Mentor self-rated overall satisfaction with program participation was 86.67% (very or extremely satisfied). Mentors described being "witness to mentee growth," "having facilitated access to learning" and receiving "unexpected benefits" including personal and professional growth and enhanced enthusiasm for their role in PHC. Conclusion: The embedded mentoring reported in this article combined a focus on skills acquisition and professional identity with the provision of a range of resources and support activities. Research on how teachers learn to co-teach is scarce. In this systematic review, the PRISMA method was used to examine the relationship between teacher learning and co-teaching in professional development programmes. Inclusion criteria was used to identify 567 articles on K–12 co-teaching, published in 2009–2018. A detailed analysis of nine articles revealed that the linkage between co-teaching and teacher learning remained narrow. Various programmes showed that the existing understanding of co-teaching or teacher learning was not used efficiently. Considerable variation in the programmes regarding the concepts, methods, and practices highlight the importance of conducting future research. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives Mental health staff play an important role in facilitating personal recovery. We examined how mental health staff perceived personal recovery and the professional and personal benefits of their experience with supporting the personal recovery of service users. Research Design and Methods Forty-eight mental health staff wrote a narrative about a service user with severe mental illness that they believed to be in the process of personal recovery and elaborated on the impact of this professional experience. Interpretive phenomenological analysis was used to illuminate 1) staff conceptualizations of personal recovery, 2) professional contribution to recovery, and 3) positive impact of recovery-oriented care on staff. Results Staff conceptualizations of recovery focused on social connections and positive subjective states, as well as symptom remission and illness management. Professional contributions were narrated as encompassing treatment, relationships, and conversations as well as time and team collaboration. Impact on the staff included strong positive emotions, professional gains with respect to learning and self-esteem, motivation for and meaning in work, as well as belief in recovery.
