Industrial energy management is critical to ensuring efficient energy usage, market viability, and greenhouse gas emission reductions. In this study, the aim is to investigate energy management practices in paper and pulp industries (PPI) of Bangladesh. The study identifies several barriers to adopt energy management practices; "Lack of governmental attention", "Inadequate staff awareness" and "limited access to capital" are identified as the major constraints. In addition, HVAC systems and compressed air systems present higher barriers compared to electrical motor and pump systems while looking at the barriers by technology areas. On the other hand, "Owner's demand", "Commitment from the top management" and "Pressure from the customers and different non-Governmental organization" are found to be the dominant drivers of energy management in the studied PPI. Energy management practices can enhance the energy efficiency approximately by 4–5 % according to the study. Furthermore, this study reveals that the majority of PPIs are unaware of the energy service companies (ESCO) with the lack of a standardized system for energy audit, as well as a lack of trust and information, appearing to be the obstacles behind this. • Energy management practices in paper and pulp industries of Bangladesh are shown. • Barriers and drivers to energy management practices in paper and pulp industry are presented. • Barriers to energy efficiency measures by technology area are discussed. • Barriers to consult energy service companies (ESCOs) are presented. Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to reveal how the prices, costs, and logistics develop in the case mill and how these variables correlate with profits, and finally to give suggestions for improvements. Design/methodology/approach - A typical Finnish paper mill is selected for the basis of the case study. The complete data for the mill for the years 2001 to 2007 at a monthly level are used. The data are obtained from the mill's financial management system and transferred to Excel. Statistica 4.1 software is used to run the statistical correlation analyses. The results can be generalized with certain limitations to paper manufacturing located at a long distance from its customers. Findings - This paper gives an important insight into the economics of the Finnish paper industry. From theory-building point of view, the empirical process data show that the variation in production lines is minimal, but there are important variations in paper deliveries. A lot can be gained in the logistics processes. Larger volumes delivered in tons also tend to increase profits. From the mill to the consignees, fluctuations in the process and paper sales grow substantially, which indicates longer storage times. Research limitations/implications - The results of the case study are based on the data of a single large integrated paper mill in Finland covering the years 2001-2007, so the results cannot be directly generalized to concern all Nordic paper mills. In May 2005, there was an industrial blackout, which considerably affected the production and deliveries of all Finnish paper mills in that year. Practical implications - The competitive advantages of the Finnish paper industry are undermined by low paper prices and costly logistics. The mill managers should increasingly focus on overcapacity and cost issues and also deliver volumes, which all could contribute to higher profits. Originality/value - In this paper, the Finnish paper industry is studied through a time series, economic geography, and statistical tools. This approach is a novel method and gives new insights into this research object. The article features the top ten paper companies around the world. First on the list is the International Paper Co., which operates a range of pulp, paper and packaging and converts plants, as well as merchanting companies, wood product facilities and specialty chemicals plants. The company is followed by Weyerhaueser Co., which harvests and distributes pulp, paper and other forest products and operates a sizeable real estate division. The Georgia-Pacific Corp. is producing and distributing building products, including various industrial wood products, lumber and gypsum board.

This study aims to validate a data collection tool's psychometric properties to explore whether business management research's relevance is a high-order construct made up of its perceived interest and perceived relevance. The authors conducted a confirmatory factor analysis to validate a two-factor scale. The sample was composed of 148 MBA students from a Peruvian business school. Results showed the appropriate levels of validity and reliability and confirmed the usefulness of this data set for exploring the relationship between perceived interest and relevance. Businesses and schools can replicate the validated tool for reviewing their curricula and teaching practices, exploring the gap between business and management research results and advancing managers' research literacy and evidence-based practice in business education and training. The research aims to describe the state of enterprise risk management (ERM) in the insurance sector. It highlights emerging trends in the application of risk management in the insurance sector and thereby reports the prominent research gaps and new avenues for research in ERM. The research adopts a systematic literature review (SLR) approach, using 187 research papers spanning 44 years (1977–2021). The paper identifies the fact that most ERM and insurance sector research is performed in North America and Europe, while developing economies in Asia and Africa lag. The paper establishes a three-way relationship between ERM, risk management (RM) and risk-based capital (RBC) where RM is a subset of ERM and RBC is a driver of ERM. The research shows that very few studies are conducted on risk culture, three lines of defence and the role of chief risk officers. The determinants of ERM identified are board, firm size, audit and risk management committee and corporate governance. The determinants identified for firm value are return on assets, return on equity, profit, Tobin's Q, among others. This research provides a way for academicians, practitioners and policy makers to design effective strategies for implementing ERM in organisations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article, based on the author's study in Finnish, examines human and labor relations implications of new production strategies in the Finnish paper industry. Starting from Sorge and Streeck's classification, it analyzes some of the effects of adopting diversified quality production (DQP) on work organization and labor-management relations. The findings of a case study suggest that more cooperative forms of management are a major condition for raising productivity and developing flexible work organization in high-tech manufacturing environments with well-established systems of collective bargaining. Background: Scientific research publishing carries significant role in the development of the society. Apart from the dissemination of knowledge, there are also motives for publication of scientific research results at the level of individual researchers. Objectives: The goal of the paper is to propose simple, yet highly applicable advice when pursuing the publication of a paper in a scientific journal providing a closer look to economics, business and management journals that focus on Eastern European countries. Methods/Approach: The 4 Cs model of scientific writing and publication is presented, based on four questions: (1) How to pick a topic relevant for publication?; (2) How to select a journal for possible publication?; (3) How to structure the paper in accordance with the IMRAD format?, and (4) How to efficiently write the paper? Results: Step-by-step application of the 4C's model is presented in the paper with an outlook to economics, business and management journals that focus on Eastern European countries. Conclusions: Publication in a scientific journal is an important venue for scientific researchers. In preparing the presentation of the scientific research results for the publication, number of issues relating content, style, composition and presentation should be taken into account. The article reports the author's opinions regarding a paper written by Colonel Urwick. While the author found many of Urwick's statements about the work "Papers in the Science of Administration" to be valid, he found some of them to be misleading. Topics of discussion include organizational structure, organizational behavior, business size, and the diffusion of technological innovations.

Purpose of this paper is to determine changes in the research trends in the International Journal of Industrial Engineering and Management by analyzing trends and topics covered by its papers that were published from 2010 to 2020 and available in the Scopus database. Keywords and titles of papers were identified. Analysis was conducted both summarized for all eleven years and individually for intervals of three years. Results showed that the most popular topic was mass customization. Also, usage of information technologies in managerial and engineering processes is becoming immensely popular in the last few years. This study aims to analyze the relative efficiency of graduate programs in terms of the quality of their scientific publications in journals. To this end, we applied Data Envelopment Analysis to the fields of Public and Business Administration, Accounting, and Tourism, using data from the 2017 Quadrennial Evaluation developed by the Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior ["Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel", CAPES]. The results suggest that efficient graduate programs are concentrated in the center-south axis of Brazil, in the areas of Administration and Accounting. Despite the overall publishing strategy in journals of various ranks (strata), efficient graduate programs allocate their efficiency primarily to Qualis A1 journals, A1 being the excellence rating in the CAPES scale. We conclude that legitimized research practices pressure graduate programs to improve the quality of their publications while threatening the survival of programs that fail to conform to the assessment rules. The Journal of Product Innovation Management (JPIM) was launched in 1984 and over its first two decades of existence evolved into the leading journal in the field of innovation and the management of technology. During these 20 years JPIM contributed to the field by publishing 488 academic papers. This paper is a follow-up study to an earlier study that looked at how JPIM evolved in terms of knowledge stock and knowledge flows during the first two decades (published in JPIM, March 2007). That paper looked at what was published during the first 20 years, which sources were cited, and which journals cited JPIM papers. This study takes a closer look at the impact of JPIM on the field of innovation and the management of technology by identifying the most classic papers published in JPIM during its first two decades of existence. This study used multiple research methods to identify 64 candidate potential classics from the 488 papers published in the first 20 years of JPIM's existence, to analyze how they differ from the other 424 papers published in the journal, and to investigate authors' motivations for writing these papers. Finally, using survey responses from the Product Development and Management Association (PDMA) membership and other academics in innovation and new product development, the research then determines which 5 of the 64 candidate papers are considered to be the “most classic” papers published and the factors driving that determination. The findings show that classic papers are those presenting a “pioneering idea” in the field that creates buzz in both the academic and practitioner worlds. High numbers of citations are indeed the outcome of these endeavors, but being a classic requires more than having high numbers of citations. Authors of the true classics generally have worked hard to disseminate their research, usually to both academics and practitioners, perhaps also contributing to the network buzz created by their findings. While one of the five most classic papers represented the first investigation into a particular stream of research, the other four were culminations of a significant body of research, providing a distinct summary of known information on a topic at the time they were published and a clear road forward for future research on the topic. Several aspects of the growing market for energy-related collaboration between pulp and paper industries (PPIs) and energy service companies (ESCOs) in Sweden were investigated through in-depth interviews with PPI and ESCO managers. Aspects of concern are the different forms of co-operation established, the managers' views on the recent changes made regarding competence and business focus, the managers' views on the opportunities and risks with energy related co-operation and the implications for sustainable industrial energy management. The study shows that there is a mutual belief among PPI and ESCO managers that co-operation can provide opportunities for improved competitiveness through a more rational distribution of competences between companies. The main two barriers against the utilization of this potential are that ESCOs must prove that they can bring added values other than capital to pulp and paper mills, and the lack of competition between external energy service providers. Furthermore, we argue that adding aspects related to competence and inter-firm partnering can improve the existing theory surrounding barriers and opportunities for sustainable industrial energy management in manufacturing industries. There has been a huge excess of low-cost paper on the market and a global price erosion of manufactured product. Paper Products Limited (PPL) -- a Trinidad-based tissue paper manufacturer, was ruthlessly exposed to this changing environment. This paper reviews a strategic realignment exercise which was done to determine the root causes of project failures, and to tailor-make a project management (PM) framework to govern process improvement projects at PPL. In order to quantify historical project performance and determine the reasons for historical project failure at PPL, a four (4) phase study was initiated. Phase-1 involved the analysis of projects undertaken from 2012 to 2015 on the cost, schedule and scope variances. Phase-2 determined the root cause of project failures, Phase-3 comprised the development of a PM framework, incorporating the common processes advocated in literature and the final phase involved testing the efficacy of the framework using selected projects at PPL. Trial implementation of the customised PM framework achieved a reduction in budget, schedule and scope variation by 20%, 18% and 1%, respectively. These performance improvements were attributable to enhancements in the framework's approach to developing the risk management plan, the work breakdown structure and the stakeholder management. As validated by an executive review of the PM framework, the adoption of the framework could enhance PM practices and sustain PM performance improvements at PPL. This case study demonstrates an initiative in fostering PM practices and performance in business. The results and implications of the analyses discussed are of potential value to the field of studies. Evaluations are suggested to examine critical processes and individual steps, and future studies could validate the key elements identified for the customised PM framework. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The case study evidence in this paper suggests that management of technological change is more complicated than the existing literature has acknowledged. Rather than merely introduce or not introduce new technology, managers have to choose between more or less advanced technologies whose implications are difficult to assess. Moreover, the choice between advanced and conventional production technologies seems to be influenced more by situational determinants than by the habitual actions of managers or changes in management characters. Taking these situational determinants and firm-specific critical incidents seriously is essential, especially for an understanding of why managerial actors alter their approach to managing technological change. By adopting a longitudinal firm-in-sector perspective to technological change this paper demonstrates how coinciding increases in material resources and competitive pressures encourage management to adopt advanced instead of conventional technology. To justify this argument, the paper compares two consecutive technological change projects in the same firm and describes the background of their profoundly different degrees of sophistication. The article presents a study which aims to shed light on the boundary choices of firms that operate in the pulp and paper industry. The study conducted interviews with senior managers of pulp and paper companies and collected comparative data on other industries while theoretical approach was based on extended transaction-cost economics (TCE). Results of the study demonstrate the relevant factors when company decision makers consider the governance choice for different activities. It demonstrates that the factors that managers take into account could be assessed through applying TCE.

This study evaluates the impact of pollution performance by pulp and paper firms on their economic and market performance. Pollution performance measurement is based on a pollution index developed from pollution emission reports filed with the regional offices of the Environmental Protection Agency by pulp and paper firms for their individual plants. Economic performance is measured by Net Income, ROE, ROA, Cashflow/Equity and Cashflow/Assets; market performance is measured by the PE ratio and systematic risk. The association between the pollution index and economic and market performance variables is tested by the Pearson Correlation coefficients. The results of this study indicate that, in the short run, pollution performance is negatively associated with economic performance and that the markets do not reward good pollution performance. Strict pollution standards may be desirable for forcing management to undertake pollution abatement activities to achieve a cleaner environment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article contains the results produced by an international group of industrial managers, engineers, consultants and researchers who came together in a Roundtable meeting to formulate recommendations for integrating people, organization, and technology in modem advanced manufacturing environments. The wink of this Roundtable was focused on identifying what human factors knowledge manufacturing industry should be applying now to improve its competitive position. The Roundtable also proposed a R&D framework and agenda for the future which is aimed at ensuring that industrial and government funded research is directed at areas where industry can derive benefits or where deficiencies exist in relation to the design and operation of advanced manufacturing enterprises. This article examines the supply risk management of the Swedish pulp and paper industry under imperfect competition. The price of the wood input in the domestic market is set before the sellers supply decisions have been taken. There are backstop markets in the sense that the firms in the forest industry can buy the wood input in e.g. the international market, after the realization in the domestic markets is known. The reason why the world market is not used to compensate the domestic fluctuations with a counter-cyclical import, is probably that such a fine-tuning, although probably possible on a year-to-year basis, is nevertheless more expensive than using the inventory. When asked, representatives of the pulp and paper industry claim that they are not the exclusive masters governing the imported volume, basically they can either refuse or accept what they are offered, but they can not always increase the volume by accepting a somewhat higher price. In other words: the firms import from a "thin" market.

Examination management system is an information system that enables an educational institution to be more effective and efficient in planning, execution, and monitoring of academic-related test. The research was focused on investigating the perception of the instructors from Business Administration Science and Engineering faculties of Cyprus International University Nicosia, North Cyprus and it was analyzed to ascertain which of the examination types, computer-based (CB) test or paper-based (PB) test, the instructors preferred and observed to be more suitable. The analyses showed that most instructors preferred the CB test although instructors from business admin seem to also prefer PB test. The total population of the instructors in both faculties was 69 and a total of 61 questionnaires were retrieved and found usable from the 69 questionnaires administered, which were analyzed and used in the design of the system. A new system which will allow lecturers to create and upload questions, and then students can assess the site URL with their provided login credentials giving to them by the admin office to answer questions was suggested. Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) has emerged as a response to globalization and regulatory pressure on firms to manage their risk comprehensively. CSR is related to corporate risk management, as by engaging in CSR activities firms can be more effective in managing stakeholder relationships. Extant studies rarely examine both issues to the level of digital transformation. In the coming years, the issue of digital transformation will have an even bigger impact on business models. The first step in the effective implementation of ERM is the ability of the organization to learn and understand the requirements of ERM implementation in its company. Thus, it is important to examine the effect of the maturity learn element in ERM and CSR as risk management on the level of digital transformation. In addition, this paper also examines the moderating role of CSR on the association between ERM and the level of digital transformation. Our samples consist of manufacturing companies of developed countries in the European Union (which consists of Italy, Spain, Belgium Switzerland, Germany, France, and UK). The paper found evidence that enterprise risk management has a positive significant effect on the level of digital transformation. The paper also found evidence that CSR has a direct effect on the level of digital transformation. Purpose - Owing to the consolidation and globalization of the paper industry, manufacturing units have keen interest to focus on particular product groups. While this specialization will create opportunities for scale economics in production, management of supply chains becomes increasingly challenging, as one particular manufacturing unit serves a number of different sales locations. The aim of this paper is to identify improvement areas in the new supply chain context of paper production, and possibly give further support for the general discipline development. Design/methodology/approach - Research work is based on two different case studies completed for one major North-European paper manufacturer, which is mostly serving its customers in Europe and the USA. The first case study (a preliminary one) started when supply chain challenges were recognized at the end of the 1990s, and a manufacturing unit was seeking managerial remedies - this investigation only concerned one manufacturing unity while not singling cut any particular supply chain in the analysis. During the most recent years a more detailed case.study was conducted with this paper manufacturer, which concerned lead time performance of four different strategically important supply chains. These supply chains were championed by two different large manufacturing units (the preliminary analysis concerned one of these two paper mills). The objective of this research work is to identify whether general lead time and response studies, mostly completed in the automotive industry, are applicable to paper production. Findings - According to the analysis North-European paper manufacturers hold approximately 45 days of distribution inventory. Interestingly, in the case study it was found that in distribution this does not result in high efficiency-on the contrary different parties involved (railway, port operations and vessels) need to have a considerable amount of free and unused capacity in their operations to ensure the smooth flow of materials. Research limitations/implications - The case studies were conducted in the factories of one large North-European multinational. Therefore, the observations are limited to this company. However, in order to generalize the results further, the authors have analysed North-European paper producers through macro data and financial reports in any research environment. To cover a mismatch between company level quantitative analysis and macro data, the authors consulted several key persons in the case company concerning the research results. Therefore, triangulation in the empirical data was achieved. Practical implications - It is argued that four reasons, namely: scale emphasis in production, IT systems to support supply chains, sea shipment, and outsourced distribution, play a vital role in the forthcoming performance improvement initiatives. At the moment this results in long supply chain lead times, whatever the distance to the actual market. Decision makers in practice need to find solutions for these in order to improve performance further. Originality/value - Supply chains are rarely analyzed in research works through more than one supply chain - here analysis of four different supply chains concerning lead time is provided. Information about the two conferences on economic policy in Estonia in 2009-2010 is presented. The 25th anniversary of the organization of the first scientific conference held in Tartu discussed topics about environmental and social policies, corporate strategies and sectoral economic policy. Moreover, the 15th anniversary of the first international scientific conference organized by German research publishers would discuss business administration, corporate finance and accounting management.

Abstract: Agro-based pulp and paper mills in India are one of the most polluting industries; in addition, they are high consumers of raw water. Growing scarcity of high quality freshwater as well as stringent regulatory standards is compelling these units to explore appropriate water management options. Based on data obtained through a questionnaire survey and plant visits, this work provides an overview of the water use and effluent treatment status in Indian agro-residue and recycled pulp and paper mills. The challenges faced by this sector are reviewed and practices adopted by progressive units to minimize freshwater use are illustrated through case studies. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Purpose This paper aims to make a call for the establishment of a new research journal: a likely title for which would be Chinese Public Management. The background to this is clearly set out here for posterity’s sake. The review of selected papers unveils an emerging trend amongst Chinese researchers for undertaking deeper, cluster-based analyses. See, for example, the insights presented in this issue concerning competitiveness in China’s automobile industry.Design/methodology/approach A diary-like account has been made of the series of recent events that sparked the author’s interest in creating a journal to be known as Chinese Public Management. Why is there currently this focus on empirical research for public policy? From the author’s five years’ work for a serial visiting professorship across China, he has found that there are now well-established, substantial databases dedicated to the subject. Even more importantly – as this paper illustrates – a growing community of scholars has become keen to embark upon an in-depth, quantitative research. Perhaps, for the new journal, we would need an editor concentrating specifically on databases. Furthermore, undertaking scholarly work that is still of practical relevance for guiding authorities in their formulations of public policy will add a whole new dimension to the available research.Findings There is scope for a new endeavor that documents management research within the public sector in China. This may be seen as a sister journal for “Chinese Management Studies” that focuses on the other, much larger Chinese sector, that is, governmental organizations.Originality/value This paper documents the emergence of the necessity for a new journal about management in China. This paper aims to uncover the benefits of crowdfunding among Event Entrepreneurs in Malaysia. The study reviews literature on the definition, discussion and its revolution related to capital -raising, networking, investment, and crowdfunding among Event Entrepreneurs. Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to analyze the relationship between corporate and supply chain strategy, as well as its implementation in a multinational paper producing company. Traditionally paper producing companies have had a strong interest in developing a physical infrastructure for their customer deliveries. However, supply chain thinking is still an unstructured issue in the case company. Design/methodology/approach - This research work is mainly based on the, case company's strategy material and interviews with senior management, is mainly qualitative and is based on a constructive research approach aimed at trying to find a workable and forward looking solution based on the three strategies. Findings - The core findings concern the individual business division strategies, which jointly comprise the corporate strategy. Some of the business divisions do have a certain amount of supply chain management aims in their strategies. Furthermore, there is no real corporate supply chain strategy. Research limitations/implications - The research was conducted at a company with strong presence in Northern Europe, which limits its applicability. Thus, the research results mainly reflect a Northern European business environment and cannot be generalized on a global level. Practical implications - The conclusions of the research work include a recommendation for a new management model for the corporate supply chain strategy, which is based on cooperation between the business divisions and logistics organization. Originality/value - The value of this paper is based on the practical analysis of the case company's business divisions' strategies and interactivity between the logistics organization and the implementation of its strategy.
